Title: रंगों का त्यौहार होली आयी ।
Post by: JR on February 27, 2007, 01:10:11 AM

Title: Re: Holi In Braj
Post by: JR on February 28, 2007, 08:11:51 AM
Braj bhoomi encompasses the region of Mathura, Vrindavan, Gokul, Phalen, Nandgaon and Barsana, all of those having played an important role in Hindu mythology, where Lord Krishna spent his childhood. Amorous songs, devotional and religious fervor and sprinkled colors present a delightful scene. There are slight differences in the ways these places celebrate Holi. The most notable spots that attract the tourists for their unique ways of celebrating Holi are Phalen, Nandagao and Barsana. In Phalen, a huge bonfire is lit on the full moon night to commemorate the victory of good over evil and the Prahlad-Holika episode is re-enacted. However, the most interesting fact is that the local priests walk through the lighted fire and come out unscathed!

At Barsana, the 'latthmaar holi' is famous. The men of Nandgao known as 'gops' raid Barsana and try to mark their victory over the temple of Radhika by furling flag over it while the women of Barsana try to fend them off with long bamboo sticks. The men are well padded because they cannot retaliate to the women and can only try to keep them off by sprinkling colored water on them. In case they get trapped, they are dressed as a lady in a sari and cosmetics are applied and they are made to dance like a lady. It is said that even Lord Krishna was made to dance like this by the 'gops' of Barsana. Next day, the same scene is repeated in Nandgao as men of Barsana raid the village to win over temple of Shriji and women of Nandgao beat them with sticks to keep them off. Holi songs known as 'Hori' are sung by the men and women and are mostly based on the dialogues exchanged between Krishna and Radhika.

Sai Ram Jyoti ji. You won't believe this but this  morning only I was watching a recording on Vrindavan and Braj and was asking my  husband if we will have ever any opportunity to visit these places..may be in our next trip to India but not sure how to go abt it. But I wanted some pointers from someone who has lived there. Its amazing your post today only mentioned these places. I will discuss with you in personal emails. Also there is a barsana dham ashram in Austin, Texas, we had the fortune of visting that place unplanned few years back, it was heavenly there- esp heard abt Holi celebrations  - I learnt abt barsana in india.  Jai Sai Ram.

Barsane ki Lathamar Holi

Holi is celebrated on the full moon day in the month of Phalguna (Feb-March). Holi in Braja is celebrated for several days, at different places around Braja, before the actual day of Holi. People throw colored powdered dye and colored water on each other. This is joyfully celebrated in Braja, especially at Varsana, Nandagram and Dauji. In Varsana the festival includes colorful processions with music, song, dance. In Varsana Gopas (men) from Nandagram come to Varsana and play Holi with the local gopis (women) of Varsana. The women hit the men hard with 7ft long bamboo staffs. The men have shields which they protect themselves with. During this time local songs are sung. The day after the Holi festival at Varsana, Holi is celebrated in Nandagram. The gopas (men) from Varsana come to Nandagram to play Holi with the gopis (women) there. Women play Holi with bamboo staffs.

THE HOLIKA STORY

The story centres around an arrogant king Hiranyakashyapu who resents his son Prahlada for worshipping Lord Vishnu. He attempts to kill his son but fails each time. Finally, the king's sister Holika who is said to be immune to burning, sits with the boy in a huge fire. However, the prince Prahlada emerges unscathed, while his aunt burns to death. Holi commemorates this event from mythology, and huge bonfires are burnt on the eve of Holi as its symbolic representation.

KRISHNA

The history of the origin of Holi goes back to Hindu mythology when Lord Krishna killed the demon "Madhu" in ancient Braj or modern Mathura in U.P. Therefore, Lord Krishna who was from Nandagaon and Radha who was from the small town of Barsana are worshiped on this auspicious day.  Holi is spread over 16 days in Vrindavan as well as Mathura - the two cities with which Lord Krishna shared a deep affiliation. Apart from the usual fun with coloured powder and water, Holi is marked by vibrant processions which are accompanied by folk songs, dances and a general sense of abandoned vitality. It is celebrated with special joy and zest at Mathura, Vrindavan, Nandgaon, and Barsna.

Regional Names of Holi

Popularity of Holi can be gauged from the number of names Holi has in different states. Also of great interest is the story behind each of these names.

As one moves across from one state to another, one can surely discover the myriad shades of human emotions behind the story that goes with each of these names of holi. Rango se Pyaar

Kyo mo pe rang ki maari pichkaari
Dekho Kunwarji doongi mein gaari
Bhag sakoon mein kaise mo san bhaga nahin jaat
Thadi ab dekhoon aur ko sanmuch mein aat
Bahut dinan mein haath lage ho kaise jane doon
Aaj phagwa to san ka tha peeth pakad kar loon

Jab phagun rang jhamkte hon
Tab dekh baharein holi ki.
Jab daf ke shor khadke hon
Tab dekh baharein holi ki
Pariyon ke rang damkte hon
Tab dekh baharein holi ki.

Basant khelein ishq ki aa pyara
Tumhin mein chand mein hoon jyon sitara
Jeevan ke houzkhana mein rang madan bhar
So rom rom charkiya laye dhara
Nabi sade basant khelia kutub shah
Rangeela ho riha tirlok saara

Le abeer aur argaza bhar kar rumal
Chidkte hein aur udate hein gulal
Jyon jhadi har soo hai pichkaari ki dhaar
Doudti hein narian bijki ki saar

Gulzar khile hon pariyon ke
Aur majlis ki tyari ho
Kapdon par rang ke cheeton se
Khushrang ajab gulkari ho

Holi
Holi aati yaad dilati
Pichli kitni Holi

Vo bachpen vali Holi
Vo gubbaro ki Holi

Vo sakhiyo wali Holi
Vo gujiyo wali Holi

Vo thumko wali holi
Holi aati yaad….

Har Holi albeli hoti
Holi aati hume batati
jane kitne raj dikhati
Holi aati rang lagati

Holi aati gale lagati
Aakar sab ko nahelaati

Tun mun ka vo mail hatati
Holi aati yaad dilati
Pichli kitni Holi

Holi aati yaad dilati
Rango se tann mann sahlati
Bheege bheege geet sunati
Pichkaari se rang barsaati

Holi aati yaad dilati
Bhabhi, saali se rang dalwaati..

Holi aati yaad dilati
Pichli kitni Holi

Rangon ki Holi
Doston, is parv mein phailey hai rang saarey
Pichkari sang khelo Holi, ya ley aao gubarey
Choti Choti baatein hai, choti choti khushiya
Tum bhi jara haslo aaj, jab hasti yeh duniya
Na bura socho kisika, na rakho kisi se irshya
Karo kuch aisa, ki lage rang lai hai shiksha

Rango Ke Tyohar Me Sabhi Rango Ki Ho Bharmar,
Dher Saari Khushiyo Se Bhara Ho Aapka Sansar,
Yahi Dua hai Bhagwan Se Hamari Har bar,

Holi Mubarak!

Makki ki Roti, Nimbu ka Aachar,
Suraj Ki Kirne, Khushiyo ki Bahar,
Chand Ki Chandi, Apno ka Pyar,
Mubarak Ho Aapko, HOLI ka Tyohar

Rango mein ghuli ladki kya laal gulabi hai,
Jo dekhta hai kehta hai kya maal gulabi hai,
Pichle baras tune jo bhigoya tha holi mein,
Ab tak nishani ka woh rumaal gulabi hai

Aapne dil ka haal batana chod diya, humne bhi gehrai mein jaana chod diya. HOLI se pehle hi aapne nahana chod diya?

Pichkari ki dhar, gular ki bauchar, apno ka pyar, yahi he yaaro holi ka tyohaar.....
