    Shiv Aarti

OM JAI SHIVA OMKAARAA, PRABHU JAI SHIVA OMKAARAA
    BRAHMAA VISHNU SADAASHIVAA, ARDDHAANGII DHAARAA
    OM HARA HARA MAHAADEVAA...

Glory to you, O Shiva! Glory to you, O Omkaara! May Brahma, Vishnu and the assembly of other gods, including the great Lord Shiva, relieve me of my afflictions!

    EKAANANA CHATURAANANA PANCHANANA RAAJE
    HANSAANANA, GARURAASANA VRISHVAAHANA SAAJE
    OM HARA HARA MAHAADEVA...

Being the Absolute, True being, Consciousness and Bliss, you play the roles of all the 3 gods- Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva) As Vishnu you have but one face, as Brahma four and as Shiva five. They gladden the sight of all who behold them. As Brahma you prefer the back of the swan for your seat; as Vishnu you like to ensconce yourself on the back of Garuda (A large mythological eagle-like bird believed to be the vehicle of Lord Vishnu) and as Shiva to make the sacred bull your conveyance; all these stand ready. O Great Lord, pray rid me of my afflictions!

DO BHUJA, CHAARU CHATURBHUJA DASHABHUJA ATI SOHE
TIINON RUUPA NIRAKHATE TRIBHUVANA JANA MOHE
    OM HARA HARA MAHAADEVA...

As Brahma, you possess two arms, as Vishnu four and as Shiva (Dashabaahu) ten, all of which look matchlessly lovely. No sooner do the inhabitants of the three spheres behold you than they are all enchanted. O great Lord Omkaara, pray rid me of my afflictions.

    AKSAMAALA VANAMAALA MUNDAMAALA DHAARII
    CHANDANA MRIGAMADA SOHAI BHAALE SHASHIDHAARII
    OM HARA HARA MAHAADEVA...

You are, O great Lord Omkaara, wearing a garland of Rudraaksha, another of forest flowers the third of skulls; your forehead, glistening in the moonlight which it holds, is smeared with sandal paste and musk, Pray rid...

    SHVETAAMBARA PIITAAMBARA BAAGHAMBARA ANGE
    BRAHMAADIKA SANAKAADIKA PRETAADIKA SANGE
    OM HARA HARA MAHAADEVA...

O great Lord Omkaara, your body is attired in white and yellow silken clothes and in tiger skin, while in your company are troops of goblins, gods like Brahma and divine seers like Sanaka. Pray rid...

KARA MADHYE KAMANDALU AU TRISHUULA DHAARII
    SUKHAKAARII DUKHAHAARII JAGAPAALANAKAARII
    OM HARA HARA MAHAADEVA...

O great Lord Omkaara, you hold a kamandalu (the mendicants water-jar) in one of your hands and in another a trident; you bring joy to all, destroy all distress and sustain the whole world. May you rid me of all my afflictions!

    BRAHMAA VISHNU SADAASHIVA JAANATA AVIVEKAA
PRANAVAAKSARA MEIN SHOBHITA YE TINONH EKAA
    OM HARA HARA MAHAADEVA...

The ignorant (unwise and stupid) know Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva as three individual gods, but they are all indistinguishably fused into a single mystic syllable ‘OM’. Pray rid me of my afflictions)

TRIGUNA SVAAMI KII JO KOII NARA GAVE
KAHATA SHIVAANANDA SVAAMII MANA VAAMCHITA PHALA PAAVE
    OM HARA HARA MAHAADEVA...

Says Swami Shivananda: “ He who recites this Arti to the Lord of the three gunas-sattva, rajas and tamas- attains fulfillment of his heart’s desire. O great lord Omkaara, may you rid me of my afflictions..

    Ram Aarti

SHRI RAAMACHANDRA KRIPAALU BHAJU MANA HARANA
    BHAVABHAYA DAARUNAN
    NAVAKANJA-LOCHANA, KANJA-MUKHA, KARA-KANJA,
    PADA-KAMJAARUNAN

O mind, remember Rama, the Lord of compassion who will eradicate even the most terrible dread of life; his eyes are like newly-blown lotuses set in his lotus-face; lotus-like are his hands and like ruddy lotuses his feet.

    KANDARPA AGANITA AMITA CHABI,
    NAVANIILA-NIIRADA SUNDARAN
PATA PATA MAANAHU TADITA RUCHI SUCHI NAUMI JANAKA
    SUTAAVARAN

With utmost humility I do obeisance to Sita’s consort, Ramachandra, whose boundless beauty excels that of myriad of cupids (taken together). He is as winsome as the rain-laden blue clouds. The yellow attire on his body, beautiful spotless and sanctified, looks as charming as the flashes of lightening.

    BHAJU DIINABANDHU DINESHA DANAVA-DAITYA-VANSHA-NIKANDANA
    RAGHUNANADANA AANANDAKANDA KOSHALACHANDA DASHRATHA
    NANDANAN

Meditate on Rama, the delight of the house of Raghu, root of all bliss, soothing as the moon to the Koshalas, Dashrath’s son, compassionate to the destitute, the scion of the solar race and the extirpator of the demons and diabolic daityas (giants).

SIRA MUKUTA KUNDALA TILAKA CHAARU UDAARU ANGA
    VIBHUUSANAN
    AAJAANUBHUJA SHARA-CHAAPA-DHARA,
    SANGRAAMA-JITA-KHARA-DUSHANAM

He has a (resplendent) crown on his head, a pair of pendants in hi ears, a lovely caste-mark on his forehead and ornaments on his lustrous body. The arms that reach the knees are holding the bow and arrows of the conqueror of Khara and Duushana (two of his demonic adversaries)

    ITI VADATI TULASIIDAASA SHANKARA-SHESHA-MUNI-MANI-RANJANA
    MAMA HRIDAYA-KANJ-NIVASA KURU,
    KAAMAADI KHALA-DALA-GANJANA

Concluding (his festal song, the Arti), Tulsidas entreats Rama, the delight of Shiva, Serpent-King and anchorites and slayer of the troops of Lust and the like, to make his lotus-heart His abode.

    APPENDIX

MANU JAAHI RAACHEU MILIHI SO BARU SAHAJA SUNDARA SAANVARO
KARUNAANIDHAANU SUJAANA SIILU SANEHA JAANATA RAAVARO
YEHI BHAANTI GAURII ASIISA MUNI SIYA SAHITA HIYAN HARASHII
    ALIIN
TULASII BHAVAANIHI PUUJI PUNI PUNI PUNI MUDITA MANA MANDIRA
    CHALIIN

The dark-complexioned and naturally handsome prince, on whom you have set your heart, shall be your husband. The gracious and omniscient Lord knows your loving disposition and your love. Sita and all her companions were overjoyed to hear this blessing from Gauri’s lips. Worshipping Bhavaani again and again, Sita says Tulsidas, returned to the palace, rejoicing in her heart.

JAANI GAURII ANUKUULA SIYAHIYA HARASHU NA JAAII KAHI
MANJULA MANGALA MUULA BAAMA ANGA PHARKANA LAGE

Finding Gauri favourably disposed towards her, Sita was more glad of heart than words can tell. Her left side began to throb, a sure omen of good fortune.

    JAI AMBE GAURII MAIYAA
    JAI SHYAAMAA GAURII
    NISHADINA TUMAKO DHYAAVATA

    MAANGA SINDUURA VIRAAJATA
    TIKO MRIGA MADAKO
    UJJVALASE DAUU NAINAA
    CHANDRAVANA NIIKO

O Ambe! On your forehead is a resplendent mark of vermilion along with a mark of musk (signifying good luck). Your twin eyes are bright and your face beautiful as the moon.

    KANAKA SAMAANA KALEVARA,
    RAKTAAMBARA RAAJE

    KAANANA KUNADALA SHOBHITA,
    NAASAAGRE MOTII
    KOTIKA CHANDRA DIVAAKARA,

    SHUMBHA NISHUMBHA BIDAARE,
    MAHISHAASURA GHAATII
    DHUUMRA VILOCHANA NAINAA,
    NISHADINA MADAMAATII

O slayer of the demon Mahisha, you tore apart the bodies of Shumbha, Nishumbha and Dhuumravilochana. (In the battle waged against them) your eyes reflected a frenzy of fury everyday and night.

    BRAHMAANII RUDRAANII,
    TUMA KAMALAA RAANII
    AAGAMA-NIGAMA BAKHAANII,
    TUMA SHIVA PATARAANII

You are the beloved consort of Brahma, Rudra and Vishnu. The Vedas and the Shastras describe you as the queen consort of Shiva,

    CHAUSATHA YOGINII GAAVATA,
    NRITYA KARATA BHAIRON
    BAAJATA TAALA MRIDANGA,
    AURA BAAJATA DAMARUU

Sixty-four Yoginis chorus your praise and glorify you, while Bhairava (Shiva) dances in tune to the accompaniment of the sound of tambour (mridanga) and drum (damaru).

    TUMA HO JAGA KII MAATAA,
    TUMA HII HO BHARTAA
    BHAKTANA KII DUKHA HARTAA,
    SUKHA SAMPATI KARTAA

You are mother of the universe, its sustainer, reliever of your devotees’ affliction and bestower of happiness and prosperity.

    BHUJAA CHAARA ATI SHOBHITA,
    VARA MUDRAA DHAARII
    MANAVAANCHITA PHALA PAAVATA,
    SEVATA NARA NAARII

The four arms you have adorned your person, while the hand raised in benediction reveals your benign aspect. Those among men and women who wait on you and worship you have all their cherished wishes ever fulfilled.

    KANCHANA THAALA VIRAAJATA,
    AGARU KAPUURA BAATII
    BHAALAKETU MEIN RAAJATA,
    KOTIRATANA JYOTII

In a golden platter are beautifully laid aloe and camphor, both of which have lighted (to be waved before you); in he radiance of your forehead is reflected the splendour of a myriad gems.
