  • we should accept both pain and pleasure as episodes in some wonderful drama being played by God, and learn to enjoy these episodes as spectators, and not as heroes or victims...........

  • "Yudhishthira said, 'Tell me, O grandsire, by what frame of soul should one kill one's grief when one loses one's wealth, or when one's wife, or son, or sire, dies.'

"Bhishma said, 'When one's wealth is lost, or one's wife or son or sire is dead, one certainly says to oneself 'Alas, this is a great sorrow!' But then one should, by the aid of reflection, seek to kill that sorrow. In this connection is cited the old story of the speech that a regenerate friend of his, coming to Senajit's court, made to that king. Beholding the monarch agitated with grief and burning with sorrow on account of the death of his son, the

    p. 2

[paragraph continues] Brahmana addressed that ruler of very cheerless heart and said these words, 'Why art thou stupefied? Thou art without any intelligence. Thyself an object of grief, why dost thou grieve (for others)? A few days hence others will grieve for thee, and in their turn they will be grieved for by others. Thyself, myself, and others who wait upon thee, O king, shall all go to that place whence all of us have come.'

"Senajit said, 'What is that intelligence, what is that penance, O learned Brahmana, what is that concentration of mind, O thou that hast wealth of asceticism, what is that knowledge, and what is that learning, by acquiring which thou dost not yield to sorrow?'

"The Brahmana said, 'Behold, all creatures,--the superior, the middling, and the inferior,--in consequence of their respective acts, are entangled in grief. I do not regard even my own self to be mine. On the other hand, I regard the whole world to be mine. I again think that all this (which I see) is as much mine as it belongs to others. Grief cannot approach me in consequence of this thought. Having acquired such an understanding, I do not yield either to joy or to grief. As two pieces of wood floating on the ocean come together at one time and are again separated, even such is the union of (living) creatures in this world. Sons, grandsons, kinsmen, relatives are all of this kind. One should never feel affection for them, for separation with them is certain. Thy son came from an invisible region. He has departed and become invisible. He did not know thee. Thou didst not know him. Who art thou and for whom dost thou grieve? Grieve arises from the disease constituted by desire. Happiness again results from the disease of desire being cured. From joy also springs sorrow, and hence sorrow arises repeatedly. Sorrow comes after joy, and joy after sorrow. The joys and sorrows of human beings are revolving on a wheel. After happiness sorrow has come to thee. Thou shalt again have happiness. No one suffers sorrow for ever, and no one enjoys happiness for ever. The body is the refuge of both sorrow and happiness. 1 Whatever acts an embodied creature does with the aid of his body, the consequence thereof he has to suffer in that body. Life springs with the springing of the body into existence. The two exist together, and the two perish together. 2 Men of uncleansed souls, wedded to worldly things by various bonds, meet with destruction like embankments of sand in water. Woes of diverse kinds, born of ignorance, act like pressers of oil-seeds, for assailing all creatures in consequence of their attachments. These press them like oil-seeds in the oil-making machine represented by the round of rebirths (to which they are subject). Man, for the sake of his wife (and others), commits numerous evil acts, but suffers singly diverse kinds of misery both in this and the next world. All men, attached to children and wives and kinsmen and relatives, sink in the miry sea of grief like wild elephants, when destitute of strength, sinking in a miry slough. Indeed. O lord, upon loss of wealth or

    p. 3

son or kinsmen or relatives, man suffers great distress, which resembles as regards its power of burning, a forest conflagration. All this, viz., joy and grief, existence and non-existence, is dependent upon destiny. One having friends as one destitute of friends, one having foes as one destitute of foes, one having wisdom as one destitute of wisdom, each and every one amongst these, obtains happiness through destiny. Friends are not the cause of one's happiness. Foes are not the cause of one's misery. Wisdom is not competent to bring an accession of wealth; nor is wealth competent to bring an accession of happiness. Intelligence is not the cause of wealth, nor is stupidity the cause of penury. He only that is possessed of wisdom, and none else, understands the order of the world. Amongst the intelligent, the heroic, the foolish, the cowardly, the idiotic, the learned, the weak, or the strong, happiness comes to him for whom it is ordained. Among the calf, the cowherd that owns her, and the thief, the cow indeed belongs to him who drinks her milk. 1 They whose understanding is absolutely dormant, and they who have attained to that state of the mind which lies beyond the sphere of the intellect, succeed in enjoying happiness. Only they that are between the two classes, suffer misery. 2 They that are possessed of wisdom delight in the two extremes but not in the states that are intermediate. The sages have said that the attainment of any of these two extremes constitutes happiness. Misery consists in the states that are intermediate between the two. 3 They who have succeeded in attaining to real felicity (which samadhi can bring), and who have become free from the pleasures and pains of this world, and who are destitute of envy, are never agitated by either the accession of wealth or its loss. They who have not succeeded in acquiring that intelligence which leads to real felicity, but who have transcended folly and ignorance (by the help of a knowledge of the scriptures), give way to excessive joy and excessive misery. Men destitute of all notions of right or wrong, insensate with pride and with success over others, yield to transports of delight like the gods in heaven. 4 Happiness must end in misery. Idleness is misery; while cleverness (in action) is the cause of happiness. Affluence and prosperity dwell in one possessed of cleverness, but not in one that is idle. Be it happiness or be it misery, be it agreeable or be it disagreeable, what comes to one should be enjoyed or

    p. 4

endured with an unconquered heart. Every day a thousand occasions for sorrow, and hundred occasions for fear assail the man of ignorance and folly but not the man that is possessed of wisdom. Sorrow can never touch the man that is possessed of intelligence, that has acquired wisdom, that is mindful of listening to the instructions of his betters, that is destitute of envy, and that is self-restrained. Relying upon such an understanding, and protecting his heart (from the influences of desire and the passions), the man of wisdom should conduct himself here. Indeed, sorrow is unable to touch him who is conversant with that Supreme Self from which everything springs and unto which everything disappears. 1 The very root of that for which grief, or heartburning, or sorrow is felt or for which one is impelled to exertion, should, even if it be a part of one's body, be cast off. That object, whatever it may be in respect of which the idea of meum is cherished, becomes a source of grief and heart-burning. Whatever objects, amongst things that are desired, are cast off become sources of happiness. The man that pursues objects of desire meets with destruction in course of the pursuit. Neither the happiness that is derived from a gratification of the senses nor that great felicity which one may enjoy in heaven, approaches to even a sixteenth part of the felicity which arises from the destruction of all desires. The acts of a former life, right or wrong, visit, in their consequences, the wise and the foolish, the brave and the timid. It is even thus that joy and sorrow, the agreeable and the disagreeable, continually revolve (as on a wheel) among living creatures. Relying upon such an understanding, the man of intelligence and wisdom lives at ease. A person should disregard all his desires, and never allow his wrath to get the better of him. This wrath springs in the heart and grows there into vigour and luxuriance. This wrath that dwells in the bodies of men and is born in their minds, is spoken of by the wise as Death. When a person succeeds in withdrawing all his desires like a tortoise withdrawing all its limbs, then his soul, which is self-luminous, succeeds in looking into itself. 2 That object, whatever it may be, in respect of which the idea of meum is cherished, becomes a source of grief and heart-burning. 3 When a person himself feels no fear, and is feared by no one, when he cherishes no desire and no aversion, he is then said to attain to the state of Brahma. Casting off both truth and falsehood, grief and joy, fear and courage, the agreeable and the disagreeable, thou mayst become of tranquil soul. When a person abstains from doing wrong to any creature, in thought, word, or deed, he is then said to attain to a state of Brahma. True happiness is his who can cast off that thirst which is incapable of being cast off by the misguided, which does not decay with decrepitude, and which is regarded as a fatal disease. In this connection, O king, are heard

    p. 5

the verses sung by Pingala about the manner in which she had acquired eternal merit even at a time that had been very unfavourable. A fallen woman of the name of Pingala, having repaired to the place of assignation, was denied the company of her lover through an accident. At that time of great misery, she succeeded in acquiring tranquillity of soul.'

"Pingala said, 'Alas, I have for many long years lived, all the while overcome by frenzy, by the side of that Dear Self in whom there is nothing but tranquillity. Death has been at my door. Before this, I did not, however approach that Essence of Purity. I shall cover this house of one column and nine doors (by means of true Knowledge). 1 What woman is there that regards that Supreme Soul as her dear lord, even when He comes near? 2 I am now awake. I have been roused from the sleep of ignorance. I am no longer influenced by desire. Human lovers, who are really the embodied forms of hell, shall no longer deceive me by approaching me lustfully. Evil produces good through the destiny or the acts of a former life. Roused (from the sleep of ignorance), I have cast off all desire for worldly objects. I have acquired a complete mastery over my senses. One freed from desire and hope sleeps in felicity. Freedom from every hope and desire is felicity. Having driven off desire and hope, Pingala sleeps in felicity.'

"Bhishma continued, 'Convinced with these and other words uttered by the learned Brahmana, king Senajit (casting off his grief), experienced delight and became very happy.'"

  • "Baba will provide" is all that is required?

    Can you help, Sir?

Is it necessary to go searching everyone for help when keeping faith that "Baba will provide" is all that is required? Belittling unsolicited help or suspecting situations favorable during the hour of need is perhaps limiting Baba' omniscience because Baba manifests himself in several ways and in several situations to help the distressed. At the same time, raising unnecessary outcry over every hurdle big and small is not a hallmark of a faithful Sai devotee. Let us examine the following incident in the life of eminent Sai devotee Kakasaheb Dixit, as narrated by Pujya Sri B.V. Narasimhaswami ji.

As for Dixit's own financial position, there was, for a long time, a period of depression, but there was no positive distress. Contentment was ingrained in Dixit', and he was always saying to himself, "Tevile Anante, Tase Rahave", which is the same as "Alla Rakhega Vysa Rahena", "Maula Rakhega Vysa Rahena". This means, 'We must be content with the lot assigned to us by God.' So, he was generally contented and retained his mental peace in the midst of lack of funds and income. However, special occasions arose and his faith in Baba was tested and confirmed.

Some time after Baba passed away, Kaka had to meet a heavy obligation of Rs. 30,000 to be paid to a Marwadi. The day for payment was drawing near, and Kaka could not see how to get funds for meeting this large demand. One night, as he was sleeping, he had a dream, and in his dream, his creditor was pressing him for payment. In the dream, he assured the creditor, "Oh, don't you fear. I have my friend Sir Chunnilal, Sir Chimanlal etc., all of them knights, and they will provide the money". Suddenly, he woke up and remembering the dream, he bitterly repented his stupid folly in relying upon 'Sir' this and 'Sir' that who are just persons who will fail to help at the crucial moment.

He felt that the only person on whom he could rely for getting help was Baba, and cursed his folly in relying upon such useless human help. He resolved not to think of these 'Sirs' at all, and to rely confidently and boldly upon Sai Baba alone to furnish him with funds and that too in time. He sat up in his office room on a chair and was waiting and waiting until the actual date of payment came. Until the last moment, no money was forthcoming. However, at the last moment, a young man, the son of a rich friend of his, came asking for his advice. He said that after his father's death, he was managing his property, and had to find an investment for his money. He said, just then he had brought with him Rs. 30,000/- and wanted to know from Dixit what would be best investment. Kaka, after explaining the pros and cons of other investments, finally told him that he was in urgent need of Rs. 30,000/- and he would be glad to have it on any reasonable terms, but that it was his duty to explain to the lender that his practice had gone down, that his income was very low, though his properties in the shape of bungalows were there, and that it was his duty to point out the danger and disadvantage of lending to such person. The young man, however, made up his mind to lend the money to him on account of his being his father's friend, and thus the creditor of Dixit was paid in time.

  • Alandi Swamy:
By merely blessing 'Allah achcha karega' Baba cured the ear pain of this Swamy and saved him from sure surgery.
    *Mahajani:
Once Kaka Mahajani, who was suffering from severe purging, came quietly to serve Baba as usual. At that time the portico work of masjid was in progress. Suddenly for no reason Baba became angry and started hurling abuses. All got frightened and ran away and Mahajani joined them. Baba caught hold of Mahajani. Some one in the melee had left a bag of groundnuts and had run away. Baba ate the groundnuts, gave some to Mahajani, while continuing the abuses. Then He drank some water and asked Mahajani also to drink water and told him that his purging had stopped and he could Start the repair works. Can water and groundnuts be ever a medicine to control loose motion?
*The incurable stomach pain of Dhantho Pant of Hartha was cured by the udhi and blessings of Baba.
*Once when Shama was ailing from piles, Baba cured him by advising him to take senna seeds. (Next time when Shama had piles, he took senna himself and the problem only got aggravatedl).
*By just uttering 'God will cure your', Baba cured the stomach ailment of the elder brother of Mahajani.
*Once when Nana Chandodkar was suffering from severe stomach pain, Baba cured him by directing him to take burfi (a sweet dish) mixed in ghee.
Thus, in reality it was Baba's words and udhi that
were curing the patients and not tablets or other medicines

  • Will Hari Provide?

A child does not ask for the nourishment, mother who feeds and clothes the child brings upon its care. As the child grows, its demands increase. However, the child is still not equipped to procure its needs. Although the child knows what it wants, it is the prerogative of the caretaker to provide the demanding child with its wants. The child as it enters the adulthood loses the luxury of being cared for by others. The adult gets what he or she works for. The process of spiritual advancement is analogous to the above. Baba pulls His child to Himself and provides the infant with the necessities without being asked for. The later stages involve the growing child command for its wants. Baba gives. Smilingly. This stage is the audacious lag of the journey, every prayer answered, every benefit awarded. Soon this stage should end. The realization dawns once the power of temporary bliss wanes away and the longing for something bigger begins to take a shape. How is the intangible realized? The inexplicable mastered?

Will Hari provide? Hemadpanth wrote beautifully, "If there be my Hari (Lord), He will feed me on my cot". This proverb is only true in respect of food and clothing, but if anyone trusting in this sits quiet and do nothing in spiritual matters, he will be ruined. One has to exert himself to his utmost for attaining self realization. The more he endeavors, the better for him.

Mercy of Sadguru sees one safely through the stages of infant and the growing. Constant contemplation on the nature of the self, in whatever name it is called, is the endeavor for the adult. Yes, the adult has to work for it and gets what he or she works for!

  • Tatya's Pheta

One would wonder what was going on in Tatya's mind as the angry fakir tore apart his headgear and threw it in the fire. Did it occur to him that he was going to be rewarded with a new headgear by his beloved Deva? Probably not! Why does the Master of Cryptic message resort to this sort of blessing that only seems like cursing? No one knows! Hemadpanth illustrates several incidents of Baba's strange behavior that were mistaken for His indifference in the beginning only to spell relief later.

Sometimes the reason was to teach a lesson. Sometimes it was to make a point. Most of the times, it is not known. When He dissuaded Damu Anna from grain dealing(Comodities) business, Baba saved him the agony of losing money in an unprofitable venture. When the Haji was kicked out, it was only to make him more closer. When He burnt Tayta's pheta, it was only to give him a better one! Burning is symbolic of the end. The end of perhaps a forgettable past!, the closure to an unappealing present? May be just a reminder as to who is in charge! Nevertheless, it is the new beginning. Anger of the mad fakir can only be a miracle that is unseen. A short move in His bigger plan. Towards bigger and better. Let us on this Thursday think about those miracles that we do not see for those are the real spiritual treasures hard to seek.

  • I will settle him.

    Sai baba

Narke travelled far for his job but there was no stability in one place. Here the post is related to Narke's job stability....

Narke's relatives were asking what will happen of him seeing that he had such unsettled course of life .Narke would go long distant so his mother also wished and prayed to Baba for him to settle near home or Shirdi .Baba answered and told them "I will settle him at thingya”

Same time Narke got many job offers and each time he would go to Baba ,relying on his foresight and all seeing wisdom to guide he would go .Baba's choice was very strange at times. When once Narke went to ask baba about the choice between Calcutta and Burma Baba chose Burma ( distance more than Calcutta). He always would say "Go to Burma and thingya or go to such and such a place and thingya" adding thingya every time he made the selection.

Once In 1916 he had to choose between an offer from Banares of a professorship and a prospecting job at Burma. Baba told him "Go to Burma and thingya".Narke always laughed within himself at the addition of thingya as he was a Mining Engineer and thingya held no prospects for him.

It was in 1917 that the announcement was made that a Professor of Geology for the College of Engineering at thingya was wanted. He asked Baba if he should apply for the post. He said "yes' and went to thingya to see all people concerned. It was a tough work, as the applicants for the post were many and were supported by various influential persons.

After Narke left Shirdi. Baba inquired of the men there" Where is Narke gone?" They told him " He has gone to thingya, to try for the appointment" "Allah will bless" was Baba's remark.

He then asked whether Narke had any children and was informed that several were born but none survived (they died after a very short life). "Allah will bless" was again his remark..He secured the appointment in 1918 and was made permanent in 1919 in Pune; and children born since then were not short lived. Four sons he had secured by Baba's grace. In this way Babas foresightedness came true and Narke's life gained stability.

  • It was mentioned in last post that Kakasaheb Dixit had made Shirdi more or less his home. After the death of his loving daughter Vatsali in 1911, Kakasaheb Dixit isolated himself from worldly attachments. He decided to live on whatever he could earn with grace of Almighty. He brought all his wealth to Shirdi and placed it at Lotus Feet of Baba. Sai Baba knew that Kakasaheb will need money in future so He said, "O Keep the money with you only. It will be useful in your old age".

Kakasaheb said, "Your blessings are with me. I do not need this money." Kakasaheb emptied the bag of money before Baba even though He refused.

Baba did not keep even a single penny with Him and donated all the money generously among other devotees present in Dwarkamai.

Famous judge of Mumbai Shri Garade was also present in Dwarkamai at this occasion. He was surprised at this deed of Kakasaheb.

Kakasaheb did not mind Baba's not accepting his gift and distributing it among the devotees. He wore the same smile on his face which was always present. Kakasaheb said to Baba while pressing His legs, "Baba this world is full of pits and falls, please have mercy on me and give me permission to sacrifice this Sansar."

Baba answered, "Kaka! You have only one Sansar. I have many but still I don’t think to leave any of them. Then why do you want to leave your one and only one Sansar? So stick to whatever you have and that will do you good in future".

It was in the year 1918, when Baba took Mahasamadhi. At the time Kakasaheb's age was about 54 years. He abdicated all his wealth at Holy Feet of Baba. He generously used left over money for charity. He was always engrossed in Sai Naam Jaap. Days passed by like this and Kakasaheb was pressed under debt of Rs. 30,000. Only millionaires took such considerable debts at that time. Kakasaheb was tensed about repayment of the debt. His condition grew from bad to worse as the date of repayment was nearing. Kakasaheb had not taken even a single penny from anyone as his life and now he had to hear abuses from creditors for money. He could not bear the burden of worry and debt. He was feeling morose, dejected and helpless. He started losing hope for help from all directions.

Kakasaheb had to repay a big amount of debt and only six days were left. He was pennyless and expected that those six days should never end. He thought for some or the other way all the day and night. On one such night, he was thinking and went to sleep unknowingly. He had following strange dream :

The same creditor came to recover his money from Kakasaheb Dixit. Kakasaheb Dixit answered, "Right now six days are remaining to repay the debt. You need not worry; I will repay full debt in time. I am not an ordinary man. I am popular among many famous personalities like Chimanlal Setalwad and have maintained good relations with all of them. So there is no reason to worry. Now you go and come after six days".

Thus the dream ended. Kakasaheb woke up. Placing his hand on head in dismay, Kakasaheb realized his mistake what he did in dream. He thought, "I have surrendered myself to Baba in all respects. Baba's treasury is ever full like Kuber's treasury or even more than that, then how can I ask help and support from an ordinary person like Chimanlal Setalvaad?" He started shedding tears in front of Baba's picture. He begged for forgiveness to Baba mentally saying and praying, "Baba there is no one else in my heart and mind other than You. You only are my Maai-Baap (parents). My words are not untrue and without meaning. Baba, You are Antaryami (knower of inner thoughts). You can judge Yourself Baba that I am not speaking untruth. Baba, You cannot leave me any day, I fold my hands before You, please forgive me as I showed my dependency on that Chimanlal Setalwad in dream. Please forgive me Baba..."

Days passed by and the day of repayment of loan was nearing. Only one day was left and Kakasaheb sat in his office thinking and trying to find some solution and way to come out of this problem. A young lad turned up. His complexion was fair and he had bright eyes. His name was Chandravadan Nanavati. He gave introduction to Kakasaheb that he was son of Shri Nanavati and Kakasaheb loved him very much when he was a kid. Also he asked the reason for Kakasaheb's worry and morose condition. He added, "Uncle, I have come here for special work and I wish to invest some amount of money lying idle with me through you. I am very well aware of your relations with my father. Now a days money cannot be given for investment to any unfamiliar person. I am here because I trust you fully."

Kakasaheb said, "O, son, these days I am very worried. You make arrangement for investment elsewhere. I have many debts to repay and I don’t have enough money, so if your money is used by me in wrong way, how will I show you my face?"

Chandravadan said, "Uncle why do you say so? There is no difference between you and my father in my opinion. If my money proves useful to you in your tough times, I will be more than happy. You can use my money as per your wish." Thus saying he kept Rs. 30,000 on the table and went away.

Thus Kakasaheb repaid his debt well in time and was saved from any misery with the grace of Baba. Baba as a loving father arranged everything in time. So those who surrender themselves completely to Baba, all their problems and calamities are taken care of by Baba.

  • Dear Sai devotee readers,

As informed earlier, the Tarkhad family started worshiping Sai Baba on daily basis and on Thursday evening they used to perform the Arati collectively at their residence. Virendra's grandmother was completely at peace of mind and she was very happy that her headache had disappeared forever.

She was now getting attracted more towards spiritualism. She started reading spiritual books regularly. Once she expressed her desire to Jyotindra of going on a pilgrimage to Holy Pandharpur and to take Darshan of Lord Vithoba. She went on to inform him that, the holy books suggest that before one parts with this world, one should visit Pandharpur.Jyotindra advised her to check with Baba and seek his clearance.

Accordingly, during their next visit to Shirdi, she asked Baba to permit her to go to Pandharpur. Baba told her" Oh Mother for us Shirdi is our everything and there is no need” She was rather disappointed . She told Baba that Pilgrims visit Pandharpur, as they firmly believe that Lord Vithoba is stationed there and once you have his Darshan then your path to attain Moksha (salvation) is clear. She expressed to him that she has developed very strong urge to visit and perform his pooja at least once in her lifetime. Baba knowing her desire to be genuine then declared "Oh Mother do not worry you will visit Pandharpur and fulfill your desire."

On returning home they informed Babasaheb Tarkhad about that and after proper planning Jyotindra and his mother proceeded to Pandharpur. Readers will appreciate a point that as Mecca is to Muslims, Bethlehem to Catholics so is Pandharpur to Maharashtrians.

On reaching there Jyotindra made all the necessary arrangements.

After taking bath and breakfast when the morning rush hours were over they walked up to the Vithoba Mandir along with pooja material. On entering the sanctum sanctorum they seeked the permission to perform pooja from the priest of the Mandir. Grandmother proceeded in her own way and almost completed the pooja. Now was the time to adorn the Vithoba Murti with the garland and there was a dilemma. Grandma would want to garland with her own hands but the priest would not allow doing so, as no one is permitted to climb the platform where the Murti is situated.

Grandma told Jyotindra that her pooja would remain incomplete if she were unable to garland the Murti with her own hands. Jyotindra advised her to pray to Baba and seek his help as he had granted her permission to visit Pandharpur. She closed her eyes and raised both the hands holding the garland, and requested Lord Vithoba to accept her pooja.

Then came a miracle. Lo and Behold! The Murti of Lord Vithoba slided down the platform. Jyotindra instantly shook his mother bodily. He told her to open her eyes and see for herself that the Lord had responded to her prayers and now she can adorn him with her garland. She instantly placed the garland on Vithoba's neck and the Lord was back to its original place. Both mother and son prostrated in front of Lord Vithoba.

On seeing this, the priest was completely astonished and flabbergasted. He jumped down from the platform and held the feet of grandmother and Jyotindra and declared that they are the Vithoba and Rakhumai and he would not allow them to go away. He pleaded pardon for his arrogant behavior. Jyotindra consoled him and told him not to have any wrong ideas about their identity. He told him that they are devotees of Shirdi Sai Baba and on getting consent from him they are visiting Pandharpur.

He further told him to have strong faith in Lord Vithoba who is Jagrut (wakeful) over there and is no more a stone God. He advised him to perform his pooja from the bottom of his heart and seek his blessings in return. He then requested the priest to give them prasad so that they could leave the Mandir. They purchased Brass Idols of Vithoba -Rakhumai and placed it in their Sandalwood Mandir to offer daily worship.

This experience was like receiving heavenly pleasure for both of them. Though they use to offer prayers to God very sincerely they never ever imagined that Lord Vithoba will greet them in that fashion. After this visit when they visited Shirdi next, Baba asked Grandmother (mother) could you meet Vithoba?" Grandmother replied "Baba this is all your making. I am now read to part with this world as I consider my life is complete now." She profusely thanked him.

  • I get angry with none. Will a mother get angry with her children? Will the ocean send back the waters to the several rivers?

I will take you to the end.

    Surrender completely to God.

If you make me the sole object of your thoughts and aims, you will gain the supreme goal.

Trust in the Guru fully. That is the only sadhana.

I am the slave of my devotee.

Stay by me and keep quiet. I will do the rest.

What is our duty? To behave properly. That is enough.

My eye is ever on those who love me.

Whatever you do, wherever you may be, always bear this in mind: I am always aware of everything you do.

I will not allow my devotees to come to harm.

If a devotee is about to fall, I stretch out my hands to support him or her.

    Chapter XVI

    Greatness of Shri Guru

Namdharak- when all the disciples went away on the pilgrimage who served Shri Guru?

Siddha- I was in a swoon of delusion. But your question has given rise to the Sun of knowledge. Shri Guru's life is like Kamdhenu. Shri Guru lived secretly at Arogya Bhavani near Vajnath. I was with him this time. A Brahmin came to Shri Guru, praised him and said humbly, `I am doing penance, but my mind has not become still. I am greatly appeased to see you, kindly tell me means to attain knowledge and liberate me.

The Brahmin further said, ` Gurudeo, I had a Guru, He used harsh words and asked me to do undesirable service. He did not teach me logic, grammar, bhashya etc. He said that my mind is not still, so I left him in anger.'

Shri Guru-You are a fool, harming yourself and treacherous to Guru. You speak ill of Guru, how can you have knowledge? Why did you come to me leaving Guru, who is a Kamdhenu. By pleasing the Guru by service and giving respect to him one can know Vedas, Shastras and eight Siddhis (a boon to do particular miracles).

The Brahmin placed his head on the feet of Shriguru and asked, `gurudeo, kindly tell me who is a Guru and how to serve him?'

Shri Guru- Mother and father are Gurus. Brahma, Vishnu, Maheswhar are Gurus. One serve his Guru with devotion. I narrate to you a tale in this connection.

Dhoumyarishi lived at Dhwarawati. He had three disciples; Aruni, Baid and Upmanyu. In former times, the Guru tested his disciples before giving knowledge to them. Dhoumys said to Aruni, `go to my field and fill it with canal water.' Aruni went to the field. The canal water was flowing with great force. Paddy was sown in the field which was on higher land than the level of the water. He placed stones to divert the water to the field. He then laid his body across the canal and thus half the flow of water entered the field. Even by sunset, as Aruni did not return, Dhoumya went to his field and called him loudly. He feared a serpent might have bitten or a tiger might have attacked him. Hearing the Guru's voice, Aruni came out of the canal and bowed to the Guru, and stood near him Dhoumya embraced with pleasure and blessed him saying `you will know all Vidyas. Go home get married and live happily'.

Dhoumya then said to Baid, `Go to the field, keep watch on the crop and when it is reaped, bring it home. Baid accordingly went to the field, and kept the watch day and night. When the crop was reaped, a cart with one buffalo was given to him. Baid placed the corn in the cart, yoked the buffalo on one side of the yoke and he himself pulled the cart on the other side. He could not draw the cart with the buffalo, still he drew it with much strain. The buffalo got stuck in the mud and could not go forward. So he alone drew the heavy cart. Subsequently his neck was strangled and he had to face great strain. In the meantime, Dhoumya came there and released him from the yoke. He embraced Baid an said, `you know Vedas and Shastras well.'

The third disciple Upmanyu was fat and dull Dhoumya asked him to take the cattle for grazing the forest. Upmanyu took the cattle to graze. At times, being hungry he would return early from the forest. The Guru told him not to come from the forest till sunset.

The cattle would graze on the bank of a river Upmanyu would bathe, take alms from the Brahmins living nearby. Thus he satisfied his hunger. One day the Guru asked him, `How are you living?'

He said that he took alms and dined. Guru said, `How to you dine without us? Give the alms in the Ashram and again go to the forest.'

Upmanyu acted as directed by the Guru. He would give the alms in the Ashram. But as he did not get full meals at the Ashram he again took alms from some Brahmin houses and satisfied his hunger. When the Guru knew this. He angrily said, `Give both the alms in the Ashram.'

As directed, he gave both the alms in the Ashram. He was anxious now how to satisfy his hunger. He saw calves drinking milk of cows and much milk fell on the ground and was wasted. He held that milk in his hands and drank it.

After some days the Guru asked him how he was fat, He said that he drank the milk that fell while the calves drank the milk from the cows. The guru said, `you should not drink milk tasted by calves as this milk makes you dill.'

While remaining in the forest, he saw milk like paste coming out of the "rui" plant. He held the milk in leaves and while he was drinking it, some drops thereof entered his eyes. Subsequently he lost his eyesight and became blind. Now he thought the Guru would be angry with him. He began to collect the cattle; but as he could not see, he fell in a well.

When Dhoumys knew that Upmanyu did not return by the evening, he went to the forest and called him loudly. Upmanyu responded from the well and informed him about his whereabouts.

Dhoumya came near the well and said to him with sympathy `Recite Ashwinikumar mantra'. After doing that, he got back his eyesight. He came out of the well, bowed to his Guru and stood by him. Dhoumya placed his palm on his head and instantly he had all the knowledge. Dhoumya said to him, "Go home, get married and live happily. You will be well known. One of your disciples, Uttank will bring Kundal (ear ornament) and win the Shesh. He will advise King Janme jaya to perform sacrifice of the serpents and kill all the serpents in the sacrifice"

As stated, Uttank caused Janmejaya to perform the sacrifice in which even Indra had to come down along with Takshak (the king of serpents). This is all due to the greatness of Guru. He will liberate you. You should try to please him.

The Brahmin said, `gurudeo, you have given me the right advice. As I have offended my Guru, how can I please him now? It is very difficult to appease the wounded heart. I would, therefore, leave this worthless body of mine,' saying this, he bowed to Shri Guru. Shri Guru realized his repentance and knowing his desires, Shri Guru said, `All your sins are wiped off now. Remember your Guru.'

The Brahmin folded his hands and prayed, `You are the Guru of all the world and incarnation of three great Gods. How can there be darkness after the rise of the Sun? You please protect me.'

Hearing this Shri Guru was kind to place his right palm on his head and instantly he had knowledge of Vedas, Shastras, Mantras etc. By the touch of the philosopher's stone, iron is changed into gold, similarly the Brahmin became learned. Shri Guru again asked him to go to his Guru.

The Brahmin went to his Guru. Shri Guru then went to Bhuvaneshwari near Bhilavadi and stayed under an Audumber tree on the bank of the Krishna secretly.

    Chapter XVII

A Dull Brahmin boy Becomes Learned

Shri Guru observed Chaturmas living under the Audumber tree near bhuvaneshwari secretly. Still his name and fame spread in all the quarters.

Namdharak-Why Shri Guru lived secretly? Why did he observe anushthan and asked for alms?

Siddha-Shri Shankar and Shri Guru Dattatraya like to beg alms. Shri Guru roamed through holy places for protecting his devotees. People came to him and harassed him for trifles and hence he lived secretly. But though the Kasturi is hidden, its fragrance cannot be hidden, similarly brightness of Shri Guru could not be hidden.

There lived at Kavir a learned Brahmin who knew the Vedas. He had a dull foolish son. His parents died in his childhood. When he was seven, his thread ceremony was celebrated, but he could not do Sandhya and recite `Gayatri' mantra. Local Brahmins abused him saying, `your father knew Vedas and shastras; but you have spoiled his name. Your life is worthless. Chintamani is best among the beads, so is the knowledge for a person. A man is honored for his knowledge. A King is respected by his people; but even a king respects learned persons, as knowledge is wealth.'

The boy requested them to suggest means for his improvement. The Brahmins said, `you will have knowledge in the next birth. You should beg for your maintenance in this life.'

The boy being dejected, went to a forest. He was thinking of giving up his life. In the evening he reached Bhilavadi. He took darshan of Bhuvaneshwari and sat at the door of the temple. Next morning he cut his tongue and placed it at the feet of the goddess and said, `If you do not be kind with me. I shall even offer my head at your feet.'

That night he had a dream in which Devi appeared before him and said, "Oh Brahmachari, why are you getting angry with me? There is an Avatarik Purusha sitting under an Audumber tree on the bank of the Krishna. Go to him. He will fulfill your desires."

He woke up and at once ran and crossed the river. He rolled at the Guru's feet and started praising Him. Guru was pleased with him, blessed him and put his hand on his head aas Varad Hastha. At once the boy got knowledge and enlightenment. He also got his tongue back.

If a crow has a dip in the Manasa-Sarovar it will become a Hamsa (swan). So also he who touches Guru's feet will acquire all knowledge. Guru is Almighty. His glory needs to be sung.

    Chapter XVIII

    A Poor Brahmin Gets Wealth

Varuna Sangam is known as Kashi in the south. Shri Guru came here from bhilavadi and stayed near Panch Ganga sangam for 12 years. Shiva, Bhadra, Bhogavati, Kumbhi and Saraswati are the five rivers. This is a famous holy place like Kashi and Prayag. There is a temple of amareshwar and an Audumbar tree as a Kalpataru. Sixtyfour yoginis lived here. There are 8 holy places in the neighborhood. They are Shukla Tirth. Papavinshi, Kanyatirth, Siddha Varad, Prayag Tirth, Shakti Tirthm Amar Tirth and Koti tirth.

Shri Guru lived under the Audumbar tree here. He would go to Amarpur for alms. In Amarpur lived a Brahmin knowing Vedas. He had a devoted wife. He had a sem creeper at his door. When he could not get sufficient corn he would live on the boiled seems. He adored Shri Guru with devotion. He invited Shri Guru for alms one day. After taking the alms Shri Guru blessed him saying that his poverty was wiped off. While leaving the premises, Shri Guru cut the root of the sem creeper. Seeing this the Brahmins's wife bitterly saying `our means of livelihood are lost.' The Brahmin tried to console her saying, there must be some good intention of shri Guru in cutting the root of the sem. It is our good fortune that Shri Guru in cutting came to us for alms. Do not blame Shri Guru who blessed us. He will protect us.

The Brahmin took away the leaves of the creeper from the courtyard and while digging to take off the root of the creeper, he found a vessel full of coins. He told this to his wife ho was much pleased and now repented for blaming Shri Guru. Both then went to shri Guru and worshipped him with devotion and reported what had occurred.

Shri Guru said, `Do not tell this to any body, else the wealth will be destroyed, you shall live happily with your sons and grandsons.'

  • Dr. Pillay

One Dr. Pillay was an intimate Bhakta of Baba. He was much liked by Baba, Who always called him Bhau (brother). Baba talked with him off and on and consulted him in all matters and wanted him always at His side. This Pillay suffered once very badly from guinea-worms. He said to Kakasaheb Dixit, "The pain is most excruciating and unbearable. I prefer death to it. This pain, I know, is for repaying past Karma, but go to Baba and tell Him to stop the pain and transfer the working of my past Karma to ten future births of mine." Mr. Dixit went to Baba and told Him his request. Then Baba, being moved by his request, said to Dixit,"Tell him to be fearless. Why should he suffer for ten births? In ten days he can work out the sufferings and consequences of his past Karma. While I am here to give him temporal and spiritual welfare, why should he pray for death? Bring him here on somebody's back and let us work and finish his sufferings once for all".

The doctor was brought in that condition and was seated on Baba's right side, where Fakir Baba always sat. Baba gave him His bolster and said,"Lie calmly here and be at ease. The true remedy is, that the result of past actions has to be suffered and got over. Our Karma is the cause of our happiness and sorrow; therefore put up with whatever comes to you. Allah (God) is the sole Dispenser and Protector, always think of Him. He will take care of you. Surrender to His feet with body, mind, wealth and speech, i.e. completely and then see what He does." Dr. Pillay said in return that Nanasaheb had put a bandage over the leg, but he found no relief. "Nana is a fool" replied Baba. "Take off that bandage or else you will die. Now a crow will come and peck you, and then you will recover."

While this conversation was going on, one Abdul, who always cleaned the Masjid and trimmed the lamps, turned up. While he was attending to his work of training, his foot accidentally fell upon the stretched leg of Dr. Pillay. The leg was already swollen and when Abdul's foot fell upon it and pressed it, all the seven guinea-worms were squeezed out at once. The pain was unbearable and Dr. Pillay bawled out loudly. After some time, he calmed down and began to sing and cry alternately. Then Pillay enquired when the crow was coming and peeking. Baba said, "Did you not see the crow? He won't come again. Abdul was the crow. Now go and rest yourself in the Wada and you will be soon allright."

By application of the Udi and by taking it in the stomach with water, and without taking any other treatment or medicine, the disease was completely cured in ten days as predicted by Baba.
