  • Ramzan or Ed-ul-Fitr is celebrated on the 1st of 'Shawaal', tenth lunar month of the Islamic calendar immediately after the month of Ramadan. Ramzan means the 'festival of breaking the fast'.

The tradition is that everyone bathe early morning, wears new or clean clothes, applies perfume, and eats dates or some other sweet before walking to the mosque for Eid prayers. Men wear white clothes because white symbolises purity and austerity.

Community prayer, generally held in an open space is the most important part in Ramzan Eid celebrations. Every Muslim is commanded by Koran to offer Eid prayer with his breathern in full faith. As the congregation becomes too unwieldy to be accommodated in a mosque spacious grounds are selected for Community Prayers.

It is required that every Muslim gives alms to the poor and dresses in clean clothes before attending the public prayer. The Fitr or alms must be a minimum of two kilos and a half of wheat or any other grain, dates or grapes. Thus every member of a Muslim household is under religious obligation to give this Fitr or alms before proceeding to the ground where Eid Prayer or Community Ibadat is arranged. They believe that those who do not give alms on this day will not go to heaven after death.

After the distribution of alms the congregation proceeds to the house of the Kazi who is a Muslim religious official or some other learned and pious man who is detailed to lead the Ibadat and then the Kazi is conducted to the place of worship.

After the Ibadat or prayer is over, a sermon is delivered for an hour or so. The preacher then offers extempore supplementary prayers which are known as `Munajat' to the Almighty Allah for the welfare of the Muslim

faith, remission of sins for all Muslims, for the safety of pilgrims and travellers, for the recovery of the sick, for timely rain, preservation from misfortune and freedom from indebtedness. He then comes down from the pulpit, kneels on a prayer carpet to do "NAMAZ" supplication on behalf of the people. The congregation at the end of each prayer , rises up and ejaculates "Faith"- Din.

After the ritual prayers, the assembled people conduct the Kazi back to his house and the people who had accompanied him to house take leave of him.

People spend the rest of the day in feasting, visiting friends and relatives and going to the fairs which are held in open spaces for the sale of toys and trinkets. Children also enjoy themselves to their hearts content in these fairs.

Ramzan Eid is an occasion for a general expression of goodwill and friendship. Even those who are dead are not excluded from the benefit of this Eid. So it is a prevalent custom in certain parts of India for the living wife of a Muslim to offer new clothes and finery to a former dead wife in a small ceremony which is known by the name -"SAUKAN MAURA" - which literally means first wife's crown.

Greeting cards printed with "Eid Mubarak" which is also the greetings for this Eid festival are sent to friends and relatives also when friends meet they greet each other saying "Id Mubarak".

The special sweet which is a "must" and is prepared in every Muslim house is Sheerkurma.

  • Om Sai Ram~~~

    What is Ramzan?

Ramzan is the ninth month in the Muslim calendar. According to legend, the Holy Koran was revealed in this month. Ramzan is thus regarded as highly auspicious and this month is marked by fasting and prayers. Muslims keep a fast every day during Ramzan. The rituals associated with Id and Ramzan have remained unchanged for centuries.

Often, after the afternoon prayer at the mosque, religious lectures are held here. Prayer services are also held here each night during the month of Ramzan. A small portion of the Koran is read during each service, so that the entire book is complete by the end of the month.

Ramzan is similar to Lent, in the sense that it is a period of abstinence and self restraint. It also entails fasting from dawn to dusk, and every Muslim, except those who are unwell, too old, or unable to fast due to other health or circumstantial reasons such as travel, pregnancy or nursing, keeps the fast. So does that mean no eating for a month? No. It does however mean no food, drink or tobacco from dawn to dusk during this period. Children who have not yet attained puberty are not expected to fast, but many parents like to make older children around the age of eight fast for a few hours a day during this period, just so they get accustomed to the rituals of self-restraint and build up their will power, so it is easier for them to fast later on.

What is the reason for fasting during this time?

The Prophet Mohammed left Mecca and undertook the journey to Medina in 622 AD, to join the other Muslims who had migrated to Medina to escape persecution in Mecca. During this period, he fasted for three days. Many years later, He was to receive a revelation from God, which stated that all followers of the Islam faith fasted for a certain number of days. "Ramadan is the month of Ramadan should spend it fasting..." (Chapter 2, Verse 183 and 185). Fasting also purports to reduce the barriers between the rich and the poor, by creating an understanding of the sufferings the poor undergo.

What is the connection between Id and Ramzan?

Id Ul Fitr is a festival that marks the end of the Ramzan period, and usually falls on a new moon night, in the month of April or May. On this day, Muslims gather in large groups at mosques, and offer their prayers or namaz. Id is one of the most important festivals in the Muslim religion. On this day, Muslims from around the world dress up in new clothes to celebrate Id with great enthusiasm. Id celebrates the breaking of the Ramzan fast, which is why the word Fitr, which means 'to break'. People greet each other with the words "Id Mubarak", and embrace three times. Women prepare delicious sweetmeats at home, and vermicelli kheer (sweetened milk) is a popular dish. Muslims also pay tribute to their ancestors during this time.

    Jai Sai Ram~~~

    " Loka Samasta Sukino Bhavantu
    Aum ShantiH ShantiH ShantiH"~~~

May all the worlds be happy. May all the beings be happy.
May none suffer from grief or sorrow. May peace be to all~~~
