  • YESTERDAY, TODAY, TOMORROW

There are two days in every week about which we should not worry.
Two days which should be kept free from fear and apprehension.

One of these days is yesterday with its mistakes and cares,
Its faults and blunders, Its aches and pains.
Yesterday has passed forever beyond our control.
All the money in the world cannot bring back yesterday.
We cannot undo a single act we performed.
We cannot erase a single word we said. Yesterday is gone.

The other day we should not worry about is tomorrow.
With its possible adversities, Its burdens,
Its large promise and poor performance.
Tomorrow is also beyond our immediate control.
Tomorrow's Sun will rise, either in splendor or behind a mask of clouds,
                but it will rise.
Until it does, we have no stake in tomorrow, for it is yet unborn.
This just leaves only one day . . . Today.
Any person can fight the battles of just one day.
It is only when you and I add the burdens of those two awful eternity's -
yesterday and tomorrow that we break down.
It is not the experience of today that drives people mad.
It is the remorse or bitterness for something which happened yesterday
and the dread of what tomorrow may bring.

Let us therefore live but one day at a time.

  • Kids Definition of God

"One of God's main jobs is making people. He makes them to replace the ones that die so there will be enough people to take care of things here on earth. He doesn't make grown-ups, just babies. I think because they are smaller and easier to make, That way, He doesn't have to take up His valuable time teaching them to talk and walk. He can just leave that to mothers and fathers.

God's second most important job is listening to prayers. An awful lot of this goes on, since some people, like preachers and things, pray at times besides bedtime. God doesn't have time to listen to the radio or TV on account of this. Since He hears everything, not only prayers, there must be a terrible lot of noise in His ears, unless He has thought of a way to turn it off.

God sees everything and hears everything and is everywhere, which keeps Him pretty busy. So you shouldn't go wasting His time by going over your parent's head asking for something they said you couldn't have.

Atheists are people who don't believe in God. I don't think there are any in Chula Vista. At least there aren't any who come to our church.

Jesus is God's Son. He used to do all the hard work like walking on water and performing miracles and trying to teach the people who didn't want to learn about God. They finally got tired of Him preaching to them and they crucified Him. But He was good and kind like His Father and He told His Father that they didn't know what they were doing and to forgive them and God said OK.

His Dad (God) appreciated everything that He had done and all His hard work on earth so He told Him He didn't have to go out on the road anymore. He could stay in heaven. So He did. And now He helps His Dad out by listening to prayers and seeing things which are important for God to take care of and which ones He can take care of Himself without having to bother God. Like the secretary, only more important, of course. You can pray anytime you want and they are sure to hear you because they got it worked out so one of them is on duty all the time.

You should always go to Church on Sunday because it makes God happy, and if there's anybody you want to make happy, it's God. Don't skip church to do something you think will be more fun like going to the beach. This is wrong! And, besides, the sun doesn't come out at the beach until noon anyway.

If you don't believe in God, besides being an atheist, you will be very lonely, because your parent can't go everywhere with You, like to camp, but God can. It is good to know He's around you when you're scared in the dark or when you can't swim very good and you get thrown into real deep water by big kids. But you shouldn't just always think of what God can do for you. I figure God put me here and He can take me back anytime He pleases.

And that's why I believe in God."

  • Fear and faith are both beliefs - both require a belief in something that is unseen in the moment. In fear, a person believes that something undesirable is going happen, and in faith, a person believes that something desirable is going to happen. In both cases, the universe gives you exactly what you choose to believe. What do you choose - fear or faith?

I choose Faith which i have on my beloved Baba Sai.....

    "The Window"

  • The Window"

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man  was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour a day to drain the fluids from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back.

The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and   families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military  service, where they had been on vacation. And every afternoon when the  man in the bed next to the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.

The man in the other bed would live for those one-hour periods where  his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and  color of the outside world. The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake, the man had said. Ducks and swans played on the water while  children sailed their model boats. Lovers walked arm in arm amid flowers of every color of the rainbow. Grand old trees graced the landscape, and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite  detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene.

One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing by.  Although the other man could not hear the band, he could see it in his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive  words. Unexpectedly, an alien thought entered his head: Why should hehave all the pleasure of seeing everything while I never get to see  anything? It didn't seem fair. As the thought fermented, the man felt  ashamed at first. But as the days passed and he missed seeing more sights, his envy eroded into resentment and soon turned him sour. He   began to brood and found himself unable to sleep. He should be by that  window - and that thought now controlled his life.

Late one night, as he lay staring at the ceiling, the man by the window  began to cough. He was choking on the fluid in his lungs. The other man   watched in the dimly lit room as the struggling man by the window groped for the button to call for help. Listening from across the room, he never moved, never pushed his own button which would have brought the nurse running. In less than five minutes, the coughing and choking  stopped, along with the sound of breathing. Now, there was only silence--deathly silence.

The following morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths. When she found the lifeless body of the man by the window, she was saddened and called the hospital attendant to take it away--no  words, no fuss. As soon as it seemed appropriate, the man asked if he  could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.

Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his   first look. Finally, he would have the joy of seeing it all himself. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed. It faced a blank wall.

    Moral of the story:

The pursuit of happiness is a matter of choice...it is a positive attitude we consciously choose to express. It is not a gift that gets delivered to our doorstep each morning, nor does it come through the window. And I am certain that our circumstances are just a small part of what makes us joyful. If we wait for them to get just right, we will never find lasting joy.

The pursuit of happiness is an inward journey. Our minds are like   programs, awaiting the code that will determine behaviors; like bank vaults awaiting our deposits. If we regularly deposit positive, encouraging, and uplifting thoughts, if we continue to bite our lips  just before we begin to grumble and complain, if we shoot down that seemingly harmless negative thought as it germinates, we will find that there is much to rejoice about

The Many Faces of God ..

  • The Many Faces of God

When your child asks what does God look like, how would you answer?

One glorious late afternoon Michael and his mother sat cuddled together on the porch swing as they welcomed the serenity of dusk. The air was crisp and the sky was ablaze with the extraordinary hues of nature's palate. This was a special time they shared together. On this particular night Michael was filled with wonder and curiosity as he turned to his mother and asked, "Mommy, what does God look like?" His mother looked at him and said, "The faces of God are many my love."

The night I met your father; The day we married and our souls became one; And the morning I held you as a newborn in my arms and gazed upon your angelic face; I knew what God looked liked.

The moment I watched a double rainbow emerge from the violent storm clouds; The daybreak when the morning sky was filled with magnificent shades of magenta, lavender, and sapphire; And the twilight when I witnessed the brilliant sunset illuminate the mountains; I knew what God looked like.

The evening you became very ill and I stayed up comforting you throughout the night; The moments I prayed for your healing; And the dawn when you awoke smiling and healthy; I knew what God looked like.

The day your beautiful sister was entrusted into our family; The moment I watched as you tenderly held her for the first time; And the instant you told her you were her big brother; I knew what God looked like.

The days when our whole family hugged and no one wanted to let go; The twilight when our loved ones joined the Lord in heaven; And finally, the nights when we, as a family, gave thanks for all the blessings in our lives; I knew what God looked like.

Michael interrupted and said rather impatiently, but Mommy you still have not told me what God looks like. His mother smiled and said, "My darling, As our days and nights unfold the precious moments we experience are woven together to form the fabric of our lives, each thread bearing the face of God. In every gift, in every challenge, in every blessing, in every obstacle, in all that is beautiful and all that is changing you can see God's face revealed. By being aware of God's divine presence in our lives, we will always know what God looks like."

Michael and his mother continued to cuddle on the porch swing as they watched day turn to night. As the sun disappeared over the horizon, the stars emerged one by one, glistening like diamonds against the deep blue background of the night sky. The heavenly constellations appeared and shooting stars began to race across the vastness of the universe. The air was filled with peace, love, and wonder as Michael turned to his mother and said, "Mommy, now I know what God looks like."

  • The law of Karma.

    by Inspirations by Sudhir Krishnan

The law of Karma is a fundamental spiritual law in eastern spiritual teachings.  Most people would have heard of the term Karma. Karma basically stands for action, and also the fruits of action. In other words, it stands for both cause and effect. The basic idea of karma is that of personal responsibility for one’s actions - that we are creators of our life. Whatever is currently manifesting in our life has been created by us, with or without awareness, by our past actions. Thus the law of karma basically says that man is the product of his past. Righteous actions bring  favorable results, and unrighteous actions bring unfavorable results. Karma can be done with our mind - manifesting as emotions, with our intellect manifesting as thoughts and through our body manifesting as actions/words.

Karma is often misunderstood to only mean the  law of destiny. When something unfavorable happens, people say with “It’s only karma”, meaning we are powerless to do anything about it.  Some others condemn the law as being overly pessimistic, as it seems to say that many things are predestined thanks to our past, of which we have no control over. It is true that man’s present is the consequence of the past, and in this sense, the present has been destined by past actions. However karma goes beyond destiny. Although there is a price to pay for past actions, man also has been blessed with the capacity to choose his actions. The past actions creates in him a tendency by which he will act. However by being aware of those tendencies, he can consciously choose how to act in the present, and thereby begin to change his karma. Thus the future is a continuation of the past, unless modified by the present, with self-effort.

Although we enjoy freedom to choose our actions, our present actions are mixed with the tendencies that are created by our past. Greater the tendencies, harder it is to change our actions. This is why people find self-improvement difficult. Knowing what to do and being able to do it are two different things, as change involves fighting our tendencies that we ourselves created by our past actions. Thus looking back at the past, man is the product of it. Looking into the future, man is the creator of it. Looking into the present moment, he is both a product as well as a creator. In unawareness, he becomes more of a victim, and in awareness, he becomes more of a creator.

One may wonder how all our actions are kept track of and bear the fruits of pleasure and pain. Is there some God that keeps track of all this? It can seem very mystical at first. In reality, it is very much scientifically explained. Each time a person does an action with a sense of doer-ship (ego), impressions are created in his mind. Every  impression is a karma. Stronger the impression, more likely it is to manifest.  All habits are nothing but karmas. Whether it is a good or habit, the person keeps doing it without having to put too much effort. All addictions are nothing but very strong mental impressions, and thus part of the person’s karma. A person who has an addiction has a pattern of behavior that he is very likely to repeat, that is not easy to change.

Karma is classified into the following three types:

    1) Sanchita karma:

This is the total of our karmas. The set of arrows that an archer carries on his quiver is an example of sanchita karma. This is the sum total of karmic possibilities that are currently unmanifest. Since this is unmanifest, we have the option to burn these karmas by right action. All spiritual practices such as meditation, being in devotion/prayer, doing self-less service burns sanchita karma. In the above example of the archer, it is making sure the archer drops the arrows on the ground so he no longer has the possibility of firing them.

    2) Prarabdha Karma:

Karma that is currently bearing fruit is called prarabdha karma. In the example of the archer, the arrow that the archer has already shot is his prarabdha karma. The archer has already done the action, and he has to face the consequences of them, good or bad. Practically speaking, the life that we are experiencing in the present moment is our prarabdha. This includes the type of body we have, the environment around us, the type of people we are with etc. Prarabdha karma is thus that portion of our karma that may be called destiny.

A common question people ask is “Why do bad things happen to good people”? Prarabdha karma is the answer. A person may be good today, but he is paying a karmic debt for his past actions. Another question that lead to doubt/reject the law is "How come some people who perform bad deeds seem to have a good time:?" Again the answer is prarabdha karma. The person who is doing the bad deeds is currently experiencing the fruits of past deeds, which was good. Eventually he will have to pay the price for the actions done today as well. The effect of karma spans multiple life-times, and thus the law seems to be not working only because we are limiting our observation to a very short time period.

    3) Agami Karma:

This is future karma - actions that we are likely to do in future.  In the example of the archer, this is the arrow which the archer is about to shoot. Mental impressions that are very strong form agami karma. If a person drinks alcohol regularly, this is his agami karma. It is very likely that he would drink today, given that he has acquired that strong tendency by regularly drinking.

    The three practical takeaways are:

Prarabdha karma, in other words destiny, makes man a victim of his past. There is nothing a person can do about consequences from his past - he has to endure them. If he endures them without reacting to them, then he does not accumulate further karma.

At the same time, the law of karma encourages that man can change his future by present actions. With self-effort, man can burn off his sanchita and agami karma, while still enduring his pradabdha karma. With consistent effort, man become more of a master of his own destiny, and less a victim of the past.

Finally,  lest man not be discouraged by the lack of results from his effort in the short term, the law of karma explains that the lack of results could be due to an opposing force - his own prarabdha karma, which determines the level of effort required to bring about positive change in his life.

  • A Small Plant

There was a big tree in the outskirts of a dense forest. It was so huge that it provided shelter to the animals, birds and the villagers from the hot sun. Many villagers used to sit below the tree to relax and have discussions on various issues. The place near the tree was always busy with activity.

There grew a small plant at the base of the tree. Being a newly grown plant, it was delicate and tender and used to sway easily with a touch of breeze. The small plant and the tree were neighbors.

One day the plant and the tree had a small chat with each other.

The tree said, “Little one, why don’t you fix your feet deep inside the ground and lift your head bold in the air. Do it as I have done. Being the strongest it has protected me from all the dangers.”

The little plant replied, “I don’t need to do that. I am much safer under your shadow.”

The surprise tree replied saying, “Safer! You think you are safer than me? You know how old I am. I am deep rooted and have a thick trunk. Who can pluck me out and uproot me out of this place? No one can cut me with a single blow. Look at you, you will be dead even if a small kid plucks you”

The tree looked away in pride.

One day, a powerful cyclone struck the forest. All the trees were uprooted. Most of the forest was completely destroyed. The giant tree was destroyed from its roots.

After the storm had calmed down, the villagers started investigating the damage. Many of the strong and old trees had been struck down. The whole forest became littered with the leaves and trunks of the trees.

However, the villagers found out that the small plant was still alive. During the cyclone the plant had bent down, but after it had calmed down, the plant stood straight again. The strong tree under which it had taken protection had died by the striking cyclone but the tiny and delicate tree managed to survive the impact of the storm.

  • The Snake With a Gold Coin

There was a farmer called Shankar in Dani village. He was a poor farmer who used to toil the whole day in his farm. One day, he was working in the farm on a sunny day. Tired and exhausted by the heat he lay down under a tree’s shadow to take a small nap. When he was just about to doze off, he saw a snake with a huge hood coming towards his hands. His farm was not yielding high results since a few months. He said to himself, “This snake is my guardian. I haven’t worshipped it any time in my life. That is the reason I am facing loss in my yield.” Being a spiritual man, he bowed down in front of the snake.

He got milk in a bowl and said loudly, “Oh my Guardian. I was not aware you lived here. That is the reason I never worshipped you.” The next day when he was back in his office, the farmer saw one gold coin in his bowl. He repeated the practice of giving milk everyday. In return he would get the coin in the morning.

The farmer had to visit a village one day, so he asked his son to serve milk to the snake. The son did as he was asked to. As always, he found the gold coin in the bowl the next day. Being a selfish man, he thought, “The area seems to be having a lot of gold coins here. Instead of waiting for a gold coin every morning, I would kill the snake and get all of them.”

So the next day, when he was serving the snake milk, he hit the snake with a stick. However, the snake escaped his blow and in a fit of rage, bit the farmer’s son, who fell dead on the spot.

When the farmer came back from the village he heard about his son’s death. He cried and mourned.

After a few days, he went back to the farm and calling him loudly, he served him milk. He cried out loud but the snake did not give any response. After sometime, the snake came out of its snake hole. He said to the farmer, “Your son is dead and you still are greedy to get the gold coin. From now on we are not friends. Your son tried to kill me so I bit him. How can you I forget the pain he caused me? How can you forget about your son’s death?” The snake gave the farmer a expensive pearl and went away.

He said, “I will no more give you any coin.”

The farmer took the pearl and left cursing the sins of his son.

  • BUTTERFLY

A man found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could, and it could go no further.

So the man decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon.

The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings.

The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time.

Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It never was able to fly.

What the man, in his kindness and haste, did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were God's way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives. If God allowed us to go through our lives without any obstacles, it would cripple us.

We would not be as strong as what we could have been. We could never fly!

    I asked for Strength.........
And God gave me Difficulties to make me strong.

    I asked for Wisdom.........
And God gave me Problems to solve.

    I asked for Prosperity.........
And God gave me Brain and Brawn to work.

    I asked for Courage.........
And God gave me Danger to overcome.

    I asked for Love.........
And God gave me Troubled people to help.

    I asked for Favors.........
    And God gave me Opportunities.

    I received nothing I wanted ........
    I received everything I needed!

    Trust in God. Always !

  • Mahukanth and the Jackal

Mahurkanth elephant lived in a forest. His nature was arrogant and cruel. He used to treat himself as the King of the forest. The other animals were afraid of him. He was a very naughty animal. Mahurkanth used to rip of the branches unnecessarily and destroy the eggs and the nest of the poor birds by crushing them under his huge feet.

The elephant was so scary and wild that lions and tigers too were afraid to go near him. The chaos created by the elephant was increasing tremendously. One day the animals decided to kill the elephant. The meeting was held but most of the animals were afraid to kill the animal because of his huge size.

The jackals were very angry because the elephant had devastated their caves. In a fit of rage they called separate meeting to decide the strategy to get rid of the elephant. Thinking of the huge size of the animal, the senior most Jackal said,” We need to use our intelligence to kill the elephant and not our might and power”. Everyone agreed to the decision of the Jackal.

The old jackal went to the Elephant and bowed in front of him to show him some respect and said, ” My King, Can I have the honor to talk to you for a moment?” The Elephant looked at him in surprise and raising his voice said,” How did you come here? Who are you?”

The Jackal humbly said. “I am just a poor animal. You are grand and we respect you greatly. You have a kind heart and all qualities that the King of the jungle must possess. We all animals have decided to crown you as our King.”

The Elephant became happy hearing his praise. The Jackal further said,” All animals are eager to witness the crowning ceremony of the King. They have decided to conduct the crowning ceremony in the forest where all the animals will gather to witness the occasion. And according to our astrologers the ceremony should be done today and hence we request you to come along with us.”

Pleased by the praises of the Jackal, the Elephant got up to go along with the Jackal. The jackal and the elephant went deep inside the forest. On the way to the forest, they came across a swampy region nearby a lake. The jackal being lighter than the elephant could cross the region easily.

But when the Elephant got into the swamp, he got trapped in it. He started struggling but couldn’t come out of the trap. When he was unable to free himself from the region, he shouted at the Jackal for help. He said,” I need your help friend to get out of this dirt. Call you are other friends to rescue me please.”

The Jackal said,” I will not save you. You are arrogant and rude. You have killed and destroyed a lot of animals and their houses. You were never sorry for such harsh behaviors of yours. You deserve to die this way.” The jackal left away, leaving the elephant struggling for his life. After sometime, the elephant unable to come out got sunk into the mud.
