  • Willeam Shakespeare was a famous English Dramatist and poet.  During his life time he wrote thirty  seven plays,  All of them were considered as Classics in English literature.

Shakespeare was born in April 1564 A.D. in a small English town named Statford-on-Avon.  His father, John Shakespeare was a respectable businessman.  He was also the elderman and treatsurer of the corporation for sometime.  John Shakespeare sent his son William to th Grammar School of the place and he studied there till the age of fourteen.  Later he strted helping his father in his business.

In his nineteenth year Shakespeare was involved in a love affair with Anne Hathaway who was his senior by eight years.  They were married in 1582 and had three children.  No specific details were available about their married life.

About 1587 his financial conditions made Shakespeare to leave his native town.  He went to London in search of better pastures.

At that time the drama was becoming popular in London and Shakespeare was drawn towards it out of sheer necessity.  It was said that at first he was tending visitor’s horses outside the theatres.  Then he became an actor and also got himself appointed in altering and adopting existing plays before he took up the work of original play writing.  The company which enlisted him as an actor was the Earl of Leicester’s company.  Shakespeare was not a great actor.  However, throughout his theatrical career he stayed with this company, acted with it at its Rose and Globe theatres and identified himself with it, till he retired to Stratford in the end.

In a theatre career spanning more than twenty four years, Shakespeare wrote thirty seven plays and some sonnets which were considered amaging by literary critics of all times.  His historical plays Herry VI, Richard II, tragedies Hamlet, Othello, King Lear and Macbeth, Comedies, Merchant of Venice, Midsummers Night dream, Comedy of Errors and romances Romeo and Juliett, Winter’s Tale and the Tempest are still popular and admied by the modern dramatists.

During the high of his caree Shakespeare became famous and the rich and the greatest noblemen of his time like the Earls of Essex and Southampton and Lord Pembroke were among his friends.  Queen Elezabeth and after her King James, greatly appreciated and loved his dramas.  He was a man of immense literary talent and imagination.  In spite of his fame and riches, he always remained a practical man and settled down in his native place in his old age.

Shakespeare died peacefully on April 23, 1616, and was buried in the local churchyard where a bust still exists on his tomb.
