  • Name Game of Abodes- Promised Land to Vishranti

New Delhi : For all those who know about the history of Israel and Jews would be aware of the fact the very thought and ethos behind ‘Promised Land’. In a big house in Rajouri Garden in West Delhi, right on the top of name plate of the owner of the house, ‘Promised Land’ is written. In a society where people love to give some name of their abode from ‘Jalsa’ to ‘Vishranti’ and from ‘Sai Kripa’ to ‘Ek Onkar’, Promise Land is definitely a huge shift. The Promised Land is a term used to describe the land promised by God, according to the Hebrew Bible, to the Israelites. The promise is firstly made to Abraham and then renewed to his son Isaac, and to Isaac's son Jacob, Abraham's grandson. The Promised Land was given to their descendants and was described in terms of the territory from the River Egypt to the Euphrates River.

While doing a random survey on the  latest trend in terms of names people give to their homes, we found Promised Land and some other important trends. Before moving further, let’s understand the meaning of Promised Land and what is significance for Jews. Prof Pratap Sehgal, an eminent Hindi poet, said that it is possible that the Rajouri Garden resident would have moved from one place to another for his home. And finally when he had his own house after long and painful haul, he would have put Promised Land in his name plate. In any case, he would know about the meaning of ‘Promised Land.’  Then there is a house of noted theatre person Roshan Seth in one of the posh areas of South Delhi with ‘At Last’ is written on the  vantage point of the house. Once he even said that that as he has to make lot of efforts to build the house, he thought ‘At last” would be most appropriate.

While working on our very interesting project, we found that Sai Baba is creating a niche for himself outside the gates of both small and big homes. We found 16 ‘Sai Kripa’ in areas like Rajouri Garden, Nirman Vihar and Lajpat Nagar. It is a big number considering the fact that there was no God or Goddess who got so many numbers. Sehgal is of the view that as during the last couple of years, the number of Sai Baba followers has swelled in a big way, it is also reflected in the name plates.

While it is said that Delhi is a city of Hanumanji as lakhs of people throng various Hanuman temples on Tuesday, we did not find even one house where the owner has mentioned ‘Hanuman Kripa’ or ‘Mahaveer Kripa’ with or close to name plate of his house. It looks that like Hanumanji, his followers too do not believe in flaunting something. ‘Jai Mata ki’ was their in nine homes. The devotees of Shiv put either ‘Shiv Kripa’ or ‘Bhole Shanker’ in six homes. Sehgal was of the view that unlike Sikhs and Muslims, the loyalty of Hindus towards particular God or Goddess shifts from time to time. Sikhs more often than not put ‘Ek Onkar’ outside their homes. We found ‘Ek Onkar’ in ten homes in Lajpat Nagar and Rajouri Garden. Both places have good number of Sikh residents.

But what surprised the most that there was not even a single  home where the owner mentioned the name of places like Lahore, Peshawar, Karachi or Rawalpindi to reflect from where he hails. Considering the fact that Lajpat Nagar and Rajouri Garden has big concentration of people who came from Pakistan in the wake of partition, this new trend is very important. Earlier in refugee areas, people  mention place from they originally hail. Though New Rajinder Nagar was not part of our survey, we recently found a name plate in an old house with ‘Shiv Shanker Tiwari, Rais of Rawalpindi’ was written. On this issue, expert on realty matters Dr.Devendra Gupta of Century 21 India, says that it is also possible because those who came from various cities of Pakistan are dwindling very fast. Now their second and third generation has also grown old. They have no love or emotional bonding with the places of their elders. Hence, they do not write the names of cities of their elders.  And we found ‘Om’ in five houses. It goes without saying that they would be following the teachings  of Arya Samaj.
