Here is the true story of Wilma Rudolph:
Wilma was born prematurely and her survival was doubtful. When she was 4 years old, she contracted double pneumonia and scarlet fever, which left her with a paralyzed left leg. Doctors told her parents that Wilma would never walk normally again. She would need metal leg braces to walk for the rest of her life.
But her mother refused to accept this verdict. She taught Wilma to believe that she could achieve anything she set out to. At the age of 9, Wilma removed the metal leg brace she had been dependent on and began to walk without it. By 13 she had developed rhythmic walk, which doctors said was a miracle. But Wilma was not satisfied. She had decided to become a runner.
She entered a race and came in last. For the next few years every race she entered, she came in last. Everyone told her to quit, but she kept running.
One day she actually won a race. And then another. From then on she won every race she entered. Eventually this little girl, who was told at the tender age of 4 that she would never walk without metal braces, went on to win three Olympic gold medals.
History has demonstrated time and again that the most notable winners usually encountered heart breaking obstacles before they triumphed.
They won because they refused to become discouraged by their defeats.
