  • TO BE A GOOD LEADER

It’s a Chinese parable called “sound of the forest”.  A Chinese king, Ts’ao, wanted his son prince Tai to learn the basics of good leadership.  He therefore sent him to great master Pan Ku to learn leadership skills. Pan Ku asked the prince to go alone to the Ming-Li Forest, come back after one year, and describe to him the sound of the forest.

After one year, the prince returned to the master and said, “I could hear the cuckoos sing, the leaves rustle, the humming birds hum and the wind whisper and holler.” On hearing this, Pan Ku asked the prince to go back to the forest and find out what else he could hear.

The prince went back to the forest and tried to hear something more. For days, he heard no sound.  Then one morning while he was sitting silently under the trees, he felt he heard some faint sounds, which head never hear before.  The more keenly he listened, the clearer the sound became.

On returning he told the master that he had heard the unheard, “the sound of the flowers opening, the sound of the sound rays warming the earth, and sound of the grass drinking morning dew”.  He found the secret of the forest and said:

“To hear the unheard is necessary to be good leader”
