Title: ~*~GR8 FAILURES~*~

To succeed in business or life we must continually take remedial actions. Putting yourself on the line day after day can be extremely draining, especially when things do not work out as  desired. Hence, each time a disappointing event happens, I like to get reminded of these famous failures:

1.Bill Gates founder and chairman of Microsoft, has literally changed the work culture of the world in the 21st century, by simplifying the way computer is being used. He was the world's richest man for more than one decade. However, in the 1970's before starting out, he was a Harvard University dropout. The most ironic part is that, he started a software company (that was soon to become Microsoft) by purchasing the software technology from "someone" for only $US50 back then.

3.Isaac Newton was the greatest English mathematician of his generation. His work on optics and gravitation made him one of the greatest scientists the world has even known. Many thought that Isaac was born a genius, but he wasn't! When he was young, he did very poorly in grade school, so poor that his teachers became clueless in improving his grades.

4.Ludwig van Beethoven, a German composer of classical music, is widely regarded as one of history's supreme composers. His reputation has inspired ? and in many cases intimidated ? composers, musicians and audiences who were to come after him. Before the start of his career, Beethoven's music teacher once said of him "as a composer, he is hopeless". And during his career, he lost his hearing yet he managed to produce great music ? a deaf man composing music, ironic isn't!

5.Thomas Edison who developed many devices that greatly influenced life in the 20th century. Edison is considered one of the most prolific inventors in history, holding 1,093 U.S patents to his name. When he was a boy his teacher told him he was too stupid to learn anything. When he set out on his own, he tried more than 9,000 experiments before he created the first successful light bulb.

6.The Woolworth Company was a retail company that was one of the original five-and-ten- cent stores. The first Woolworth's store was founded in 1878 by Frank Winfield Woolworth and soon grew to become one of the largest retail chains in the world in the 20th century. Before starting his own business, Woolworth got a job in a dry goods store when he was 21. But his employer would not let him serve any customer because he concluded that Frank "didn't have enough common sense to serve the customers".

7 .By acclamation, Michael Jordon is the greatest basketball player of all time. A phenomenal athlete with a unique combination of grace, speed, power, artistry, improvisational ability and an unquenchable competitive desire. Jordan single-handedly redefined the NBA superstar. Before joining NBA, Jordan was just an ordinary person, so ordinary that was he was removed from the high school basketball team because of his "lack of skill".

 13.Henry Ford's first two automobile companies failed. That did not stop him from incorporating Ford Motor Company and being the first to apply assembly line manufacturing to the production of affordable automobiles in the world. He not only revolutionized industrial production in the United States and Europe, but also had such influence over the 20th century economy and society. His combination of mass production, high wages and low prices to consumers has initiated a management school known as "Fordism". He became one of the three most famous and richest men in the world during his time.

जय सांई राम़।।।

जब सोचना है तो सकारात्मक ही सोचें। जीत की बात सोचने से भले ही आप न जीत सकें; परन्तु उतने समय के लिए हार की दुर्बलता से तो दूर रहेंगे।

A winner is NOT one who NEVER FAILS…But the one who NEVER QUITS !

In 1962, four nervous young musicians played their first record audition for the executives of the Decca recording Company. The executives were not impressed. While turning down this group of musicians, one executive said, "We don't like their sound. Groups of guitars are on the way out."

The group was called The Beatles.

In 1944, Emmeline Snively, director of the Blue Book Modelling Agency told modelling hopeful Norma Jean Baker, "You'd better learn secretarial work or else get married."

She went on and became Marilyn Monroe..

In 1954, Jimmy Denny, manager of the Grand Ole Opry, Fired a singer after one performance. He told him, "You ain't goin'nowhere....son. You ought to go back to drivin' a truck."

He went on to become Elvis Presley...

When Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in 1876, it did not ring off the hook with calls from potential backers. After making a demonstration call, President Rutherford Hayes said, "That's an amazing invention, but who would ever want to see one of them?"

When Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, he tried over 2000 experiments before he got it to work. A young reporter asked him how it felt to fail so many times.

He said, "I never failed once. I invented the light bulb. It just happened to be a 2000-step process."

In the 1940s, another young inventor named Chester Carlson took his idea to 20 corporations, including some of the biggest in the country. They all turned him down. In 1947, after 7 long years of rejections, he finally gota tiny company in Rochester, NY, the Haloid company, to purchase the rights to his invention -- an electrostatic paper-copying process.

Haloid became Xerox Corporation...

A little girl - the 20th of 22 children, was born prematurely and her survival was doubtful. When she was 4 years old, she contracted double pneumonia and scarlet fever, which left her with a paralysed left leg. At age 9, she removed the metal leg brace she had been dependent on and began to walk without it. By 13 she had developed a rhythmic walk, which doctors said was a miracle.
That same year she decided to become a runner. She entered a race and came in last. For the next few years every race she entered, she came in last.

Everyone told her to quit, but she kept on running. One day she actually won a race. And then another. From then on she won every race she entered.

Eventually this little girl - Wilma Rudolph, went on to win three Olympic gold medals...

A school teacher scolded a boy for not paying attention to his mathematics and for not being able to solve simple problems. She told him that you would not become anybody in life.

The boy was Albert Einstein...

Failure doesn't mean you are a failure~~~

~~ Failure doesn't mean you are a failure...
~~~it does mean you haven't succeeded yet.
~~ Failure doesn't mean you have accomplished nothing...
~~~it does mean you have learned something.

~~ Failure doesn't mean you have been a fool...
~~~it does mean you had a lot of faith.
~~ Failure doesn't mean you have been disgraced...
~~~it does mean you were willing to try.

~~ Failure doesn't mean you don't have it...
~~~it does mean you have to do something in a different way.
~~ Failure doesn't mean you are inferior...
~~~it does mean you are not perfect.

~~ Failure doesn't mean you've wasted your life...
~~~it does mean you've got a reason to start afresh.
~~ Failure doesn't mean you should give up...
~~~it does mean you should try harder.

~~ Failure doesn't mean you'll never make it...
~~~it does mean it will take a little longer.
Title: Re: ~*~GR8 FAILURES~*~ 'A Leader Should Know How to Manage Failure'~~
Post by: tana on July 16, 2008, 12:56:44 AM
Om Sai Ram~~~
Former President of India APJ Abdul Kalam : 'A Leader Should Know How to
Manage Failure'~~~
India Knowledge@Wharton: Could you give an example, from your own
experience, of how leaders should manage failure?
Kalam:  Let me tell you about my experience. In 1973 I became the project
director of India's satellite launch vehicle program, commonly called the
SLV-3. Our goal was to put India's "Rohini" satellite into orbit by 1980. I
was given funds and human resources -- but was told clearly that by 1980 we
had to launch the satellite into space. Thousands of people worked together
in scientific and technical teams towards that goal.
By 1979 -- I think the month was August -- we thought we were ready. As the
project director, I went to the control center for the launch. At four
minutes before the satellite launch, the computer began to go through the
checklist of items that needed to be checked. One minute later, the
computer program put the launch on hold; the display showed that some
control components were not in order. My experts -- I had four or five of
them with me -- told me not to worry; they had done their calculations and
there was enough reserve fuel. So I bypassed the computer, switched to
manual mode, and launched the rocket. In the first stage, everything worked
fine. In the second stage, a problem developed. Instead of the satellite
going into orbit, the whole rocket system plunged into the Bay of Bengal.
It was a big failure.
That day, the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization, Prof.
Satish Dhawan, had called a press conference. The launch was at 7:00 am,
and the press conference -- where journalists from around the world were
present -- was at 7:45 am at ISRO's satellite launch range in Sriharikota
[in Andhra Pradesh in southern India]. Prof. Dhawan, the leader of the
organization, conducted the press conference himself. He took responsibility for the failure -- he said that the team had worked very hard, but that it needed more technological support. He assured the media that in another year, the team would definitely succeed. Now, I was the project director, and it was my failure, but instead, he took responsibility for the failure as chairman of the organization.
The next year, in July 1980, we tried again to launch the satellite -- and
this time we succeeded. The whole nation was jubilant. Again, there was a
press conference. Prof. Dhawan called me aside and told me, "You conduct
the press conference today."
I learned a very important lesson that day. When failure occurred, the
leader of the organization owned that failure. When success came, he gave
it to his team. The best management lesson I have learned did not come to
me from reading a book; it came from that experience
चिंतन परिश्रम
आज का विचार हम जाने अन्जाने मे ही अपने बच्चो का बुरा कर बेठते हे, ओर जब आखं खुलती हे तो बहुत देर हो चुकी होती हे, आज का विचार कुछ ऎसा ही हे..जो मां बाप बच्चो के लिये मेहनत कर के, सही गलत काम कर के बचत करते हे, कि हमारा बेटा बडा हो कर किसी मुश्किल मे ना पडे, भुख से ना तडफ़े, धन के लिये ना भटके आदि आदि... ओर अपने प्यारे बेटे के लिये मकान, ज्यदाद,बेकं बेलेंस, प्लाट ले ले कर रखते हे, ताकि उस का आने वाला जीवन सुखी रहे... लेकिन होता इस से उलटा हे, क्योकि जिसे सब कुछ बना बनाया मिलेगा वो....
चिंतन...
एक आदमी एक दिन मुर्गियो के दबडे के पास बेठा कुछ अण्डो को देख रहा था,तभी उन अण्डॊ मे हरकत हुई, उस ने देखा एक अण्डा थोडा टुट गया हे तभी उस अण्डे मे से एक चोंच सी निकली, ओर जो भी चुजा अन्दर था बहुत कोशिश कर रहा था बाहर आने की लेकिन अण्डा टुट ही नही रहा था, तभी उस आदमी ने एक लकडी के टुकडे से बह अण्डा तोड दिया ओर चुजा झट से बाहर आ गया ओर चीं चीं कर के खुली हवा मे खेलने लगा, लगता था बहुत खुश हे, उस आदमी ने भी एक निशान उस पर लगा दिया स्याही से, ताकि कल उसे पहचान पाये तभी दुसरे अण्डो मे भी हरकत हुई,
अब इस भलेमानष ने उन अण्डो को बिलकुल भी नही छुया, ओर बाकी चुजो का तमाशा देखता रहा, काफ़ी मशकत के बाद सभी चुजे भी अपने अपने अण्डे तोड कर बाहर आ गये, ओर नयी दुनिया मे इधर उधर खुशी मे भागने लगे,अब उस आदमी को काफ़ी समय हो गया सो वह चला गया, शाम को फ़िर देखा सभी चुजे अब ओर भी मस्ती से खेल रहे थे,
तीसरे दिन वह आदमी फ़िर से उन चुजो को देखने गया, तो क्या देखता हे सभी चुजे खुब बडे ओ गये हे ओर खुब मस्ती मे भाग दोड मचा रहे हे, बस एक चुजा कुछ सुस्त सा एक कोने मे बेठा हे, ओर वह आदमी अपना निशान देख कर झट पहचान गया कि यह तो बही चुजा हे, जिस की उस ने मदद की थी, यानि जो बिना मेहनत के दुसरो के सहारे ही अण्डे से बाहिर आ गया था, ओर जॊ मेहनत करके आये सभी चुस्त थे, थोडी ही देर बाद बह चुजा मर गया, तो उस आदमी को अपने पर बहुत गुस्सा आया की उस ने क्यो उस की मदद कर के उसे इतना कमजोर बनाया,यानि जो मेहनत खुद करते हे वह ही हर हालात से लडना जानते हे, ओर जिन्हे मां बाप की कमाई बिरासत मे मिले जिन्होने मेहनत ही नही की वह बुरे समय मे किस हालात से लडे गे,
