Dear Lana,
Direction is not important unless there is specific spiritual purpose behind mediation or Naam Japa. Sai consider moment and stillness of thoughts, Purity of mind and desires, and not position of this mortal body to get devotion level of any devotee. Love and Faith is important. But if you wish to get advance on spiritual practices, Can consider the following points:
1. If you are practicing in a room, alone. Don’t face the wall. Sit/stand in middle of room.
2. If in open area, in day Face Sun.(East, Best if in the early morning, facing East)
3. Same if at night, face Moon.
4. If a crowded place (Temple, not in main hall or room), face the wall (But your back should not be towards Idol of Lord). There wall won’t produce any negative energy or create disturbance in vibration of mind while chanting name of Lord in inner mind.

I would please like to know that when one sits for japa/namasmarana or meditation, should one face east or north? I have read that one should face east or north when meditating or doing japa. I want to know, should we face north, or east? Which direction is better and why?
