The highest form of learning is "Aatma Jnana" (i.e.) realization of the concepts of 'Aham Brahmasmi' and 'Tat Vam Asi' (thou art that). Sadly, people these days focus more on materialistic pleasures and rarely enquire of the Ultimate Truth of our spiritual foundation.
Bhagwan Ramana Maharishi said conquest of Ego is the first step in that direction. Because it is human ego that separates us from understanding the divinity in all of us. Even Saibaba once said ... "break down the wall that separates you and me..." By "wall" he meant Ego. The moment we realize that we are just instruments of Sai's Will and thereby understand that nothing is truly by our design, that's the moment we begin to get closer and closer to Him.
