  •  Why do we suffer?

God or His Name is the sole strength in living against all odds and uncertainties. If one is not at cross purposes with Him, one finds His manifestation in every happening. But, one has to bear with patience the onrush of the forces one has let loose. Yoke yourself unto Him and He will bear the brunt.

Take refuge in none but Him. Dependence on Him makes one fearless. Human beings will enjoy three-fourths of life and one-fourth they will suffer. But, we lose our patience and do not accept even that one-fourth of sorrows given by Him.
Do not be obsessed with any wish. Shake off sadness. Unhappiness is part of the ego. Beyond it, no such thing exists. That you have forgotten Truth (that God is within) is the root cause of your misery. A painful blow becomes bearable to a great extent by His remembrance. As He inflicts blows on you, so also He gives you the capacity for bearing the suffering. As one tolerates unbearable situations with patience, a time comes when He resolves all problems. Whenever you have tumults in mind, try to remember this very often. You can do this. The key is with Him. Truth wins. He is your shield. Destiny still comes but He eases the suffering.

When you have the shelter of Satyanarayan (God within), He will test you in various ways. Your duty is not to get agitated when these sorts of events hurt you. There is a saying of Baba, "You look to Me, I look to you. Even then, if they do not leave Me and still seek Me, I then become their humble servant."

The smiles and frowns of life are His tokens of love. Bear them with loving patience, you have to forsake nothing. Neither indulge, nor restrain.

If you have devotion, you need fear nothing. Devotion is never devoid of strength. So many varied problems and hindrances must come, otherwise people will not understand and realize how and why He is the best of all friends and companions. He is the Dearest One, who keeps us protected in all calamities and adversities, which are unpredictable. People falter in life and suffer by discarding Him. But, they can't do anything without Him. Have faith in Him, unflinching faith. Love Him. Hazards take care of themselves. Remembering and depending on Him make one fearless in life, whatever may happen.

He gives us jolts so that we can be ready to taste real happiness with Him, to make us free of maya, or mind and attachments. We do not know His Will, so we grieve over all He does, but He always does everything for the best. Do not worry. Never try to understand. Only accept as a gift whatever He gives, take it as His blessing. When one feels, "I am helpless, my strength fails" He comes to hold the rudder. Being always in the midst of people with their selfishness, jealousy and hatred, the mind is afflicted with pain. These afflictions are shaken off like dust through devotion and remembrance of God's Name within.

He, the Almighty, by His wish and touch takes away the worldly attractions gradually to bring one to a blissful, peaceful state. A person cannot realize this state on his or her own due to the intensity of illusory worldly desire. You do everything, see everything, listen to everything, but do not get so deeply involved as to invite sufferings through them. Of course, He will ensure this, you don't have to make any effort for it. Just keep Him in your remembrance.

  • Grace

The Supreme is omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent. He has various kinds of power, but His greatest adamantine power is His grace. The moment the Supreme uses His grace for an individual, He offers His very Life-Breath to the seeker, for the Supreme and His grace cannot be separated. Whenever we think of the Supreme, if we feel that it is through His grace that we are approaching Him, then we can be most successful in receiving Him.

The divine grace is constantly descending upon us. Those who are sincerely aspiring are conscious of this divine grace, but those who are not aspiring are keeping their heart's door permanently closed. If we feel the Supreme's grace, then we shall see that His infinite qualities, peace, Light and bliss, are already in the process of entering us, ceaselessly flowing in and through us and becoming part and parcel of our inner and outer life. We have only to follow the flow of grace to carry us into the Source which is the Supreme.

  • What Life Has Taught Me

    Swami Sivananda

I hold that real religion is the religion of the heart. The heart must be purified first. Truth, love and purity are the basis of real religion. Control over the baser nature, conquest of mind, cultivation of virtues, service of humanity, goodwill, fellowship and amity constitute the fundamentals of true religion. And I try to teach them mostly by example, which I consider to be weightier, than all precepts.

I consider goodness of being and doing constitutes the rock bottom of one's life. By goodness I mean the capacity to feel with others, and live and feel as others do, and to act so that no one is hurt by the act. Goodness is the face of godliness.

I have learnt that it is foremost duty of the man to learn to give - give in charity, give in plenty, give with love, give without any expectation. Charity is incomplete without charity of disposition, charity of feeling, charity of understanding.

To behold the Atman in every being or form, to feel Brahman everywhere at all times and all conditions of life . . . is my creed. To live in Brahman, to melt in Brahman and to dissolve in Brahman is my creed. By dwelling in such union with Brahman, to utilise the hands, mind, senses and the body for the service of humanity, for singing the Names of the Lord, for elevating the devotees, for giving instructions to sincere aspirants and disseminating knowledge throughout the world is my creed, if you call it one. To be cosmic friend and cosmic benefactor, a friend of the poor, the forlorn, the helpless and the fallen is my creed. It is my sacred creed to serve sick persons, to nurse them with care, sympathy and love, to cheer the depressed, to infuse power and joy in all, to feel oneness with each and everyone, and to treat all with equal vision is my highest creed.

I take immense delight in service. Service has elevated me. Service has purified me. This body is meant for service. I live to serve everyone and make the whole world happy.

SaiBaba bless me to have such feelings atleast a little bit.

  • Patience provides the nourishment!

Baba's simplicity is well known and in fact baffling to those who associated Gurus with grandiose pomp, and showmanship. He did not consider himself to be above everything. Such was his humility. The fact that He did not allow anyone to worship him until a few years before his death stands testimony to this. The spotless of Gurus, Sadguru Sainath is the jewel reflecting the divine wisdom. It is a practice of those who seek Guru to request for a special instruction or "upadesh". Baba gave none. When Radhabai Deshmukh insisted that she would fast herself to death, the fakir simply stressed the virtues of faith and asked her to mind patience.

Faith and patience will ferry one across the sea of mundane existence, said Baba. How does patience work? Is the patience just a waiting period that will culminate into the period of material riches? If so, it will be just a passive stage the end of which will take one to the beginning. What are the spiritual lessons one can derive from patience? Patience provides the nourishment to the seed of faith. It is during this active phase that faith in one's Sadguru will begin to blossom and bloom. Taking one close to His magnificence, patience provides the excellent of opportunities to receive, ruminate, and absorb everything that the Sadguru has to offer. Patience is the incubation phase that leads one to the realization of the everlasting. The most patient of His children were not richer by the material they possessed but by the higher level of transformation they were blessed with. Bhagath and Abdul remained materially poor their entire lives. While Baba gave lots of money to other devotees, He always kept these two poor. Baba always practiced repentance, abstinence, renunciation, and poverty. He guided these two in the same lines and having Him with them, they never felt that they were ever poor!

  • Spiritual Value of Food

Light and Love the night has a thousand eyes,
And the day but One; yet the light of the bright world dies
With the dying sun. The mind has a thousand eyes,
    And the heart but one;
Yet the fight of a whole life dies
    When love is done.

The old saint looked kindly at the old businessman but declined to attend the dinner proposed by him. All persuasions yielded no result. Finally the businessman slowly moved out of the ashram. After a distance, a disciple of the saint came from behind and said that he should not feel disappointed and that he would come and attend the dinner on behalf of the saint and bless him. The businessman agreed and next day the dinner was held.

On that night after dinner the disciple could not meditate at all and could hear a low moaning of a girl. This went on for three days. Ultimately, the disciple approached his Guru and complained. The Guru asked him to mention all that he had done in the last few days. The disciple made a clean breast of the only unusual event of the dinner he had in the businessman's house.

The all-knowing Guru told him that the businessman was merciless money-lender. A poor agriculturist could not repay the debt and the interest on it. He threatened the helpless man and finally married his teen-aged daughter in lieu of his debt as he had no male issue till then. This girl was most unhappy at the turn of events and wept silently in her lone moments. In that frame of mind, she prepared the dinner which the disciple ate. The Guru explained that while cooking, the personality of the cook would enter the food through subtle vibrations. These unseen vibrations will later enter into the personality of the eater and influence his mind. That is the reason why his meditations were disturbed.

The Guru explained that what goes into the mouth would greatly influence what comes out of it and shape our lives. The food prepared in a spiritual frame of mind, thinking only of God or Sadguru, will always give peace of mind, with powers to divinely discriminate between good and evil. Food especially taken in hotels prepared and served with ungodly tendencies, unruly behavior and foul in mouth do great harm to the spiritual make-up of a person.

Once in October 1916, Bhikubhai came to Shirdi with barfi, watermelon and a garland to offer to Sai Baba. She was a childhood friend of Mother Radhakrishna Ayi and as she crossed Godavari River in Kopergaon she saw the cremation site of Radhakrishna Ayi, Overcome with emotion, she collapsed at the site and wept bitterly. She felt Sai Baba was ungrateful to Radhakrishna Ayi after all services to Baba. She vehemently accused Baba. In such a frame of mind, she came to Shirdi and offered barfi and watermelon to Sai Baba. The all-knowing Baba refused to accept them. When she wanted to garland Baba, mysteriously the garland snapped itself into three parts.

Bhikubai had to return disappointed, Kaka Sahib asked Baba as to why he refused the gifts of Bhikubai. Baba explained to him that he cannot accept the eatables nor wear the garland brought with such a troubled heart and mental uneasiness.

Sai Baba exhorted his devotees to think of Him before they partook their food which would then become sanctified from any spiritual impurities. Every action of Baba had a meaning behind it. If we go deeper into the matter we will thus begin to understand why he acted so even while looking harsh externally.

  • 1-21.   But for the merit of some good deeds of our past births, how could we have been so compellingly drawn to Your holy feet, which have proved to be our sole refuge?
1-37.   As for you, O my listeners! I make my obeisance to you respectfully, as I pray for your undivided attention.  Unless you are attentive, how can I be happy?
1-38.   The greater the connoisseur a listener is, waiting eagerly for more and more, the grater is the enthusiasm and verve of the speaker, as he goes on narrating.
1-42.   My own heart tells me that before You, I am but a piece of straw.  And yet, I beseech You to be gracious and accept me with all my faults.
1-43.   And now, let us remember our Sadguru and worship His feet with love and devotion.  With body, speech and mind, let us surrender to Him, who is the mainspring of all wisdom and inspiration.
1-49.   O Sadguru, You defy all comparison; for, to whichever object you are likened, You already pervade it, by virtue of natural attributes.  Whatever object the eye falls upon, is but a form assumed by Yourself.
1-51.   My obeisance to You, O Greatest among the Gurus, who are in auspiciousness, the Soul Beautiful!
1-53.   Hail to you, O Sadguru, O treasure-house of kindness and mercy! Glory be to You, who are Brahma-Vishnu-Mahesh, and Dattatreya, who wanders at will on the banks of Godavari! I bow to You in obeisance!
1-55.   Bow your  head before Him in reverence; with your hands, press his feet gently; let your eyes gaze into His face intently, and, the nose inhale the fragrance of the water that washes His feet.
1-56.   Let the ears listen to the praises of Sai constantly, and keeping ties of worldly life will then fall off, automatically.
1-57.   With devotion, offer at the Sadguru’s feet your body, mind, worldly wealth, —everything, and dedicate your entire life in the service of the guru.
1-59.   Great is the power of all these, For they urge the devotee onwards, even without his knowing it, pushing him to the very threshold of Moksha.  This has been tried and tested by those of single-minded devotion.
1-62.   The Sacred name of the Sadguru is our Veda-Shastra; ‘Sai Samarth’ is our ‘mantra’ or the sacred chant.  It is also our only ‘yantra’ and ‘tantra’.
1-74.   O Gururaya! O Bliss Incarnate! You are my ultimate destination.  You alone, are my repose, for only You can relive the pain and suffering of this affected one.
1-78.   Ever since Sai, very kindly, conferred His grace on me I have been thinking only of Him day and night.  That itself will destroy the fear of worldly life.
1-79.   No more for me the chanting of other mantras, not yet, any other penance! I see only the pure, manifest form of Shri Sai, all the time.
1-80.   Gazing into Sai’s face, hunger, thirst—everything is forgotten.  What worldly pleasure can stand comparison to it?  The trials and tribulations of worldly life are forgotten altogether.
1-81.   Looking into Baba’s eyes, one forgets one’s self.  And, as the love wells up from within, the mind is immersed into inexpressible joy.
1-82.   To me service at Sai’s feet is everything; —karma and dharma, Shastras and Puranas, yoga and ritual sacrifice, and, the performance of prescribed religious ceremonies, pilgrimages, penance, —everything!
1-88.   To express one’s devotion by performing pooja, is the way prescribed by Vyasa, the son of the sage Parashar, and is another form of devotion, called ‘Archan-Bhakti’.
1-93.   After the ritual is over, the consciousness of the Supreme Spirit should be regained in your heart.

2-34.   Sai’s Life’ is a grate ocean—boundless, infinite, a mine of precious gems; which I, a tiny Titwi (Lapwing) bird is endeavoring to empty.  How can this ever come about?
2-35.   Sai’s Life is thus unfathomable, which it is just impossible to recount fully and satisfactorily.  One should therefore, be content to narrate as much of it as one can, and to the best of one’s ability.
2-43.   Even a few words of these stories, falling on the ear casually, are enough to make the misfortunes of a creature, recede, at once.  If then, the entire story is heard, with reverence and faith, a simple, trusting devotee will surely and easily cross the ocean of worldly life.
2-46.   Those who have not had the actual darshan of Baba, to pacify their eyes, may at least gain some merit by listening to the stories of his greatness.
2-56.   The words that came out of Sai’s mouth are as sweet as nectar.  How can I describe their beauty and charm? Listening to them, the heart will be filled with supreme bliss.
2-79.   “When ego and conceit are totally resolved, leaving, not even a trace behind, it is then that I will dwell in him, writing the book with my own hand.
2-80.   “When listening, reflection or writing is begun with this thought firmly governing it, then that work will be accomplished by myself, while he (Dabholkar) will only be made my instrument.
2-84.   “When heard with virtuousness and a good feeling, these stories will generate devotion in the listeners’ minds; self-experience and bliss will then follow most naturally and a state of perpetual joy will thus be attained.
    197.   Sai alone is our prosperity; Sai is our total consciousness of Bliss.  He alone is our lasting detachment from worldly affections.  And even our ultimate Refuge is none but Shri Sai!

3-3.   “If my ‘leelas’ are recorded, then any sins committed through ignorance will be dissipated.  And when these are listened to, with faith and devotion, the cares and troubles of worldly life will be forgotten.
3-4   “Waves of love and devotion will surge on the ocean of listening, diving again and again, into which, will bring gems of wisdom into your hands.”
3-11.   “Moreover, one thing I tell you, Shama (Madhavrao Deshpande), I grant all the wishes of him who chants my name with love and faith, which, in turn, enhances his devotion to me.
3-13.   “All the devotees who are attached to me, heart and soul, will naturally be delighted, listening to these stories.
3-14.    “Whoever sings my praises in a kirtan, to him I shall give total, perfect happiness, peace and contentment, always.  This is my promise.
3-15.    “He who gives himself up to me with single-minded devotion, and sings my praises with full faith, remembers me and contemplates on me, the deliverance of him is my promise.
3-17.   “Even if my stories are merely listened to, all the diseases will be cured.  And I shall pull out my devotee from the jaws of death.
3-18.   “Listen to the stories with reverence; reflect upon them deeply.  After reflection, contemplate on them.  This will bring great satisfaction.
3-20.    “Repetition of the name “Sai, Sai” will burn down sins, resulting from the evil desires of kaliyug.  A mere prostration before me is enough to destroy the past sins of speech and hearing.”
3-25.   In the days to come, some will build ashrams; some, temples; others will construct a ghat on the river-bank, too! But let us follow the beaten track and read Sai’s life-story.
3-53.   Restraint and control over the mind and the senses in Kritayuga, ritual sacrifices in the Tretayuga, ritualistic worship and pooja in the Dwarparyuga and chanting the ‘naam’, narrating the stories and singing the praises of God in Kaliyuga, these are the easy ways for attaining Salvation.
3-58.   Such is this Sai’s story, pure and sacred! May the loving, noble listeners listen to it.  And even their five great sins7 will be burned down and destroyed.
3-60.   And so, may these stories be remembered till we die.  May their study be always carried on; so that they bring peace and contentment to the beings burnt in the conflagration of worldly life and its sorrows.
3-61.   Reading the stories, listening to them with faith and devotion, contemplation will come of itself, readily, of Sai, whose form will then appear before the eyes and will be fixed in the heart.
3-62.   May the worship of Sadguru be accomplished in this way, and a detachment from the worldly life come about.  May a fondness grow within, for the remembrance of the guru and the mind be purified.
3-81.   “Moreover, do not repulse or reject anyone contemptuously—be it then, a dog, a pig, or a common fly.  For, without some special bond from the previous birth, no one comes to us.
3-95.   “To such a one then, as me, when all the workings of the mind, all affections are turned, that is the true service and true worship to me.  T experience the bliss of consciousness (i.e.Me), is to be in that pure state which is knowledge.

Recitation of Shri Sai Satcharita and Sai Naam Jaap

Relevance of Sai Bhakti in today’s world

Today science has taken precedence over all modes and methods of living and thinking. People believe and talk of scientific analysis into everything that comes their way. Truths which had been dear to man all through the ages and had stood the test of time are now required to be dissected in terms of scientific findings. Thus science has brought about a terrific change in the life of modern man – the way he eats, the way he dresses, the way he reads and writes and above all the way he thinks. Nobody has the time to stand and stare. The upbringing of our children has undergone a complete change – they having become computer savvy. Computer has also made a deep impact into the sphere of treasured knowledge and every morning as we get up; we find things and situations fast changing around us.

So also, there seems to be creeping in a change in the field of spirituality. Man seems to be left with no time to go in quest of God. God has perhaps to come to him. In this changing scenario, it is just possible that a time might soon come when he might seek God in a capsule. Press a button, and get what you want is what the man of today looks for. Baba came into this world fully aware of the coming times and the needs of the modern man.

Today a child before going to appear in an examination merely goes to a Sai Mandir and he experiences Baba’s Grace and turns to Him. So also hundreds and thousands of people all over the Globe are taking to Baba, after having experienced His Grace in some way or the other. Just imagine how simple and kind hearted our Baba is! He is accessible to one and all unmindful of his place of birth, his religion, his way of life, the origin of his country and even his dedication to Him. In this context the words of Baba quoted by Arthur Osborne are very relevant. He said, ‘‘I give to my devotees what they want in the hope that they would learn to want what I want to give to them.’’ It is implicit: what Baba wants to give to them is to take them Godwards. Baba has a way to reach the head and heart of the present day man. Whatever one may claim that Baba is the Avatar of Ram, Krishna, Siva, Dattatrey or any other God – Baba is Baba – an identity unique in Himself. He is Love and Compassion Incarnate. In fact, Baba seems to have come down on this earth in accordance with the dictum propounded by Lord Krishna in the Bhagwad Geeta to meet the requirements of the modern man”:

Let us now illustrate our point in brief from the life and living of Baba.

Baba appeared in Shirdi without a name and without an identity. As he alighted from the bullock cart near the Khandoba temple, Mahalsapati - the priest of the temple, accosted him with the words, ‘Come Sai, Come’, which name remained his identity all through his life and is so even today and shall remain so till eternity. No high sounding pre-fixes or suffixes were ever added to it. Those who tried to delve into his identity received no response. In fact, nobody can even today say with certainty: where Baba was born, who his parents were, what religion he belonged to and what were His antecedents. From the time he appeared till the time he lived on earth, Baba led the life of a Fakir and as Kabir had said: ‘One should never inquire into the caste or creed of a Fakir’. Baba never discarded the robes of his Fakiri even when large sums of money flowed to him as “Dakshina”. We, claiming to be his devotees, must take a cue from this fact and attempt not to portend him as a Shahanshah. Baba had Himself said, ‘Fakiri Sachahi Padshahi, Garibon Ka Allah Bhai.’ Baba chose to make a dilapidated mosque his dwelling place, slept on a Hessian (tat) with a brick underneath his head, wore a torn Kafani with a Patka on his head, and begged his food from a few houses which he poured on a mud pot in the Dwarkamai. This food was shared by him along with his devotees and beasts alike. He kept up this practice till the end of his life, even when his name and fame had spread far and wide. To him, the rich and the poor, the high and the low, the Hindus and the Muslims were all one and the same. He propounded the religion of universality which was the need of the hour. Baba always attributed whatever he did to God, never proclaiming his Godhood. To the Hindus, he would say ‘Allah Bhala Karega’ and to the Muslims ‘Ram Bhala Karega’. If a devotee came to him ignoring his Kuldevta or Guru, he sent him back for his Darshan. He believed and practiced the dictum of equality of man. Even when the British Commissioner’s barren wife came to see him to seek his blesses for a child, he showed no undue importance to her and went away on his routine visit to Lendi Bagh. When the lady left annoyed taking Baba to be a mad Fakir, Baba merely said that “if she was destined to have a child, she would have waited for him.” Sitting in the Dwarkamai, he knew the past, present and future of every being. He explained the deepest truth of divinity in an easily comprehensive language to his devotees most of whom were villagers as he was well aware of their capacity to understand the same. He never used high sounding Sanskrit or Arabic words and phrases. To him, all religions propounded one and the same truth.

Let us now examine how Baba is relevant in today’s world

Today’s man short of time seeks quick panacea for all his ailments. He has no time to begin his spiritual quest sitting cross-legged for long hours. Sai Bhakti provides a platform whereon a seeker initially attracted towards Baba and then slowly but surely taken onto the path of spirituality – the ultimate destination being the same. Baba showed an extremely easy and simple path of Bhakti. He did not prescribe any aasans, regulation of breathing or rituals to his Bhaktas nor did he blow any Mantra into their ears. He merely said that giving up all cleverness, just remember ‘Sai Sai’. By doing so, all their shackles would be broken and they would attain liberation. Rituals such as sitting between five fires, sacrifices, chanting of God’s name, fasting, practice of eight-fold yoga and the like were not possible for everyone. He said, ‘‘Merely listening to my stories and teachings would awaken faith in you and you will easily get self realization and supreme bliss”. “Keeping your mind steady, continue to do your duty fearlessly. Have faith in my words. I shall draw you out even from the jaws of death”. “Only by delving into my Leelas, you will obtain precious jewels of knowledge.” Baba said: “Meditate on my formless nature, which is pure Sat-Chit-Anand. If you cannot do this, meditate on my form - head to toe, as you see me here night and day.” ‘‘If you spread your palm with devotion before me, I shall immediately be with you at any time of the day and night.’’ Baba took full responsibility for providing the necessities of life to his devotees. He said, ‘‘there shall be no dearth of food and clothing in the houses of my devotees. It is my special characteristic that I always look to and provide for the welfare of those devotees, who worship Me whole-heartedly with their minds ever fixed on Me. Therefore, worry not much for food and clothing. If you want to beg for anything, beg for the Lord Himself. Giving up worldly honours, try to get Lord’s grace and blessings and be the recipient of honours in His court. Do not be deluded by worldly honours. The form of the deity should be firmly fixed in the mind. Let all your senses and mind be ever devoted to the worship of the deity. Do not be attracted by any other thing. Engage the mind in remembering him always, so that it does not wander stray towards body, wealth and home. It will then become steady, calm and fearless. Acquiring such a state will signify that the mind is well occupied and has noble inclinations. If the mind remains vagrant, it cannot achieve one – pointedness.’’ Let us think within ourselves and see how far we are following the path enunciated by Baba. Baba expected only two things from his devotees – ‘Shraddha’ and ‘Saburi’, which meant surrender unto him completely and then wait with patience for the results. How simple? Baba expected his devotees to shed away all wickedness and ego. He said to one of his devotees, ‘‘I am the slave of your slaves (Dasanudas) and your debtor. It is a favour done to me that I have had the darshan of your feet. I consider myself blessed.’’ What great a humility flowing from the lips of the Master of the universe. We have to assess our actions in the background of Baba’s utterances.

Like all sages and saints, Baba laid great stress on desirelessness. Experience has shown that if one takes to Baba heart and soul, the state of his desirelessness will automatically follow.  Baba had himself said, “Believe me, if anybody sings my Leelas, I will bestow on him infinite joy and everlasting contentment. It is my special characteristic to free any person from the shackles of life and death who completely surrenders to me and who worships me with faith”. He laid great stress on charity (Dan), particularly Ann Dan. He stated, ‘‘Give with faith and magnanimity; give with modesty, sympathy and respectfully.’’ Each word uttered by Baba is very significant and we should take a note of it. To cultivate the habit of charity in His devotees, he asked for Dakshina from them. ‘‘Remember, one should indulge in charity (alms giving, building temples and the like), according to one’s income only and never over spend by borrowing money from others.’’ He always advocated that one should share his food with all present. He said, “God dwells in every being. Satisfying the dog’s hunger is the same as mine. The dog too has a soul. The creatures may look different but the hunger of all is the same. Know for certain that he who feeds the hungry really feeds me. Once, Mrs. Tarkhad was staying in Shirdi. At noon, when meals were ready and dishes were being served, a hungry dog turned up and began to bark. Mrs. Tarkhad got up at once and threw a piece of bread towards the dog which the dog ate with great relish. In the afternoon, when she went to the Masjid and sat at some distance from Baba, Sai Baba told her, “Mother! You have fed me sumptuously up to my throat. My afflicted pranas (life-forces) have been satisfied. Ever act like this and this will stand you in good stead. Sitting in this Masjid, I shall never, never speak the untruth. Continue to take pity on Me like this. First give bread to the hungry and then eat yourself. Remember this well!” Mrs. Tarkhad could not at first understand the meaning of what Baba said. She, therefore, asked, “Baba! How could I feed You? I am myself dependent on others and take my food from them on payment.” Baba then replied, “After eating that lovely bread, I am heartily contented and I am still belching. The dog, which you saw before your meal and to which you gave the piece of bread, is one with Me; so also other creatures (cats, pigs, flies, cows etc.) are My own form. I am roaming about in their forms. He, who sees Me in all these creatures, is My beloved. So abandoning the sense of duality and distinction continue to serve Me, as you did today.” From the description as given above, it would be seen that Baba preached ‘Dharma’ in practice, its intricacy being compressible easily and which could be followed without much do in the everyday life of the present day man.

The behavioral pattern a devotee has to follow in life, Baba demonstrated by example and explained in very simple words which no amount of study of literature could ever do. The following few extracts from the Sai Satcharitra will illustrate this point:

‘‘If any one does any evil to you do not retaliate. If you wish to do anything, do only good acts to others.’’

‘‘He who carps and cavils at others, pierces me in the heart and injures me, but he who suffers and endures, pleases me most.’’

Regarding acquisition of knowledge through books, Baba said, ‘‘Howsoever learned a man may be or howsoever deep his study of Vedas and Vedanta may be, he cannot reach the destination, without the help of an able Guru.’’ ‘‘If you look for Brahma in books, you shall only find Bhram.’’

Baba gave unparalleled assurances to his devotees, a few of which are stated hereunder:

    •   “No harm shall ever befall him, who steps on the soil of Shirdi.”
    •   “He who ascends the steps of my Samadhi, all his sorrows and sufferings shall come to an end.”
    •   “My Samadhi shall ever be active and protect my devotees, even though I may not be there in flesh and blood.”
    •   “You look to me, I look to you.”
    •   “I am ever grateful to him who places his faith in me heart and soul.”
    •   Even when I leave this body, my bones shall worry for my devotee.

The truth of these assurances is experienced by Baba’s devotees even today. Who else has given such assurances in such plain and comprehensible words?

Once when Nana Chandorker was pressing Baba’s legs in Dwarkamai, two Muslim women came for Baba’s Darshan. Nana wanted to leave the Dwarkamai but Baba made him to remain seated. First one woman who was old, removing her veil, prostrated before Baba and then the second one who was young and pretty similarly prostrated before him. Nana was stung by the beauty of this young woman and a secret desire rose in his heart to see her face for a second time. Knowing that Baba was Sarvgyani and would be aware of his feelings, he felt ashamed. Baba gave him a pat and after the women had left, told him: “ Nana ! Why should you feel sorry that way? Before allowing the senses, mind and intellect to enjoy their objects, remember me first. The senses can never remain without having an urge to enjoy the objects, but offer those objects to me first. Then the attachment to them will vanish:’’ what a practical and sensible advice to follow which is very relevant in the world of today.

Baba cared for all his devotees at all times. When Nana Chandorker was feeling extremely thirsty while climbing a hillock for the Darshan of Devi, Baba sitting in the Dwarkamai, felt concerned for him and exclaimed, ‘‘Can’t I provide a glass of water to Nana who is extremely thirsty.’’ And lo! A Bhil appears on the hillock from somewhere and tells Nana that water was available underneath the stone on which he was sitting. Nana had a glass full of water to satisfy his thirst.

Another incident of reflecting Baba’s concern for each and every of His devotee which has touched me most is being narrated hereunder:

On the Ramnavmi day of 1914/15, while Baba was sitting in the Dwarkamai and huge crowds of devotees were flocking for his Darshan at about 9:00 a.m. Shama requested Him to have His breakfast, Baba said, “My stomach is full, I need no breakfast.” Soon thereafter an old lady was heard requesting people to allow her to have Baba’s darshan as she was old and infirm. These words fell in Baba’s ears and he asked Shama to go and escort that old lady and bring her to him. The old lady, teering the crowds, was brought before him. Baba exclaimed, “Ma! I am sitting hungry since morning waiting for you. Let me have what you have brought for me to eat.” The old woman replied, “Baba I had brought two chapatis and one onion to offer to you but on the way I felt very hungry and ate away one chapati and half onion, only one chapati and half onion is left”. Taking the chapati and the piece of onion from the old woman’s hand Baba ate away the same with relish. He told the woman: “Ma! How gratified I feel after eating the food brought so affectionately by you.”

Such like experiences the devotees of today are also having in abundances all around the Globe.

    Conclusion

The most outstanding feature of Sai Bhakti is that Baba provides instantaneous relief to a person who remembers him earnestly. This phenomenon is the tale of many a Sai devotee all over the world, who have taken to Him. What more relevance could there be for the devotees from the Messiah of Compassion, in the world of today afflicted with problems all around.

In the end I shall submit that Bhakti is not a subject to be talked about.  Baba is the Tattva to be realized and imbibed in our lives and living. Wearing saffron clothes on the body, with a patka tied on the head and coloured beaded Malas adorning the neck, shall not make us realize Baba. We are merely deceiving our own selves. Let us imbibe Baba in our heart, speech and actions   When we shall have done so, words shall stop flowing from our lips and our whole being would become ‘

  • Control of thoughts

Our Thoughts are precious. They are our very own property and can't be taken from us. - P.K Shaw.

Thoughts play havoc with our mind when the mind is unrestrained. When we do not control our thoughts, it keeps feasting on everything that the senses come up and dwell upon it.

Training our mind is not easy. Vedanta says that we can master the mind and, through repeated practice, we can make the mind our servant rather than being its victim. The mind can be made pure by constantly focusing on the values and actions that are prescribed in the sacred scriptures.

This involves integrating the all the senses and actions in an acceptable manner in order to achieve the spiritual goal. One needs to discard any thought that is undesirable and only feed those thoughts that are good to the mind. In chapter 6 of Satcharita Hemadpant refers to Baba's advise to his devotees and BABA says "fix the mind in remembering Me always, so that it will not wander elsewhere, towards body, wealth and home. Then it will be calm, peaceful and care-free.

This is the sign of the mind, being well engaged in good company. If the mind is vagrant, it cannot be called well-merged."

Meditation helps in control of mind. Meditation is loving recollection of God, mental discrimination, and is an essential balance to selfless action. Initially one finds all thoughts crowding the mind at once and difficult for a man to concentrate on God either in nirgun or sagun akaar.

But constant discipline and sticking to the path of godliness and focusing on the positive aspects of life one realizes the path towards happiness. It does not mean that spirituality and control of mind is restricted to those who have severed all the relationship in the world and lead celibate life.

That is a wrong concept. In fact, any person leading a normal family life can control his mind and attain happiness. When mind is not allowed to covet other man's property, wife, children, and indulge in sensual thoughts and intoxicating drinks and discriminate between what is appropriate behavior then such mind is happy and in control.

As we are the masters of our thought we do not crave for things that don't belong to us, and harm our thought process by neglecting our family when all the members of the family are happy so also we are happy calm and composed and the divinity within shines forth without too much of exertion. Katha upanishad reiterates this fact "The Self cannot be gained by the study of Vedas, nor by intellect, nor by much learning. He, whom the Self chooses, by him It is gained. To him the Self reveals Its nature".

Let us make a regular practice to keep time for meditation in order to create a habit; it's also helpful to have a regular place for meditation that is quiet, clean, and tranquil. And most important let us invoke the blessings of our guru to start this stage of purification of mind.

  • The way to peace

"The wise find peace on hearing the truth, like a deep, clear, undisturbed lake."

Already wise in their inmost consciousness, the wise need only hear the truth of dharma to instantly recognize it and to come to the end of their search for realities of life-and beyond. The mind of a truly dharmic person is deep, clear, and undisturbed by any phenomena arising either from within or without. We usually think about peace of mind, but there is also peace of will. That is, once a person has fixed his intention on the attainment of higher consciousness, and resolved to do all that is necessary to attain that precious thing, then nothing can shake him from that steadiness of will (sankalpa). Inwardly he will have peace, even if he is somewhat affected by fluctuations in his emotional or intellectual levels. Those who keep their mind's eye steadfastly on the goal, like an archer aiming at the target, will know peace that is unshakable.

  • The Meaning of Faith

Faith has been interpreted by so many. "Faith that moves mountains" faith of the heart, faith in oneself. My love and faith in our beloved Sai Baba goes back many years and over time trials, tribulations faith, trust, and love for Him has grown stronger.

Recently I had an episode whereby a friend of mine was in urgent need of a favor. She is also like me a strong devotee of our Incredible Saibaba and she was really stressed out about the same. I prayed with her and we both asked Sai to grant this wish, as it was a question of her child's future. Both of us with fervent faith called upon Sai for help.

Days, hours minutes passed and there seem to be not a murmur. Still I clung on to His holy feet without doubt or question.

Days, hours, minutes kept passing and with every sunset, my friend seemed to wilt like a flower losing hope of her wish ever becoming a reality. I also stepped up my prayers praying night and day for Sai to help her in her hour of need and as the days passed she started to feel helpless and hopeless she thought Sai had forsaken her, left her, was not heeding her, she became despondent but I kept reminding her of her faith and love for Him and she thanked me for doing so but I could feel her helplessness. I called out to Him for we are His children and He could not do this to a true Saibaba devotee and just as I felt all was lost lo and behold from nowhere came that call the one we awaited the one she so longed for and her wish became a reality.

I sobbed uncontrollably and so did she and we clung to each other knowing our Baba had come through. Yes it took time, patience, sadness, helplessness, hopelessness but I am proud to say that I held on refusing to let go, refusing to accept anything other than His love.

True faith, I have been tested time and time again and I have to admit I do get upset and feel lost but He is there, He is there and as He says "One Step taken towards Me I will take Ten towards you". I am glad I held on. I am happy that Baba came through for us.

Remember all you Sai Baba devotees, we are truly blessed and lucky, keep your faith and it will surely make you move that mountain.

  • Truly live

Think of the best possible thing that you could accomplish today, and then ask yourself this.

    What would be even better?

Instead of lowering your expectations to be more in line with reality, raise those expectations and then improve your reality so it matches them.
That's a much better choice and yes, you can most certainly do it.

Realize that the best is yet to come. Then get busy and make it happen.

What has happened before may be interesting and useful to know about. Yet all of that is in the past, and right now the world is filled with brand new possibilities.

The quality of your life right now depends on how you live it right now. What will you choose to do with such a magnificent opportunity?

This is the moment when you can mold life into whatever you would like it to be. Take a deep breath, stand up, walk forward and truly live all the wonder that is here.

  • One good article I came across.........

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held
up a sign which said: 'I am blind, please help.' There were only a few coins in the hat.

A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words.
He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.

Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, 'Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?'

The man said, 'I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a
    different way.'

What he had written was: 'Today is a beautiful day and I cannot see it.'

Do you think the first sign and the second sign were saying the same thing?
Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first sign
simply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people they were so lucky that they were not blind. Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective?

Moral of the Story: Be thankful for what you have.
    Be creative.
    Be innovative.
    Think differently and positively.

    I'm sad.

Sad like butterflies pinned to cardboard boxes.

Sad like books with torn pages, ocean shores empty of bathers.

I am sad like unfinished stories

Sayee bhakth kare jo kucch bhee….accha ho parinaam…
Jo bhee unke dar pe aaya…banthe bigade kaam…

If silence is the language of the spiritual bliss, how does one communicate it? If it is thought to happen at
His will and His alone, how does one receive it? One may wonder if it is egotistic to go around telling
people about God’s miracles in their lives and the message shared through them. If that were being
egotistic, equally egotistic would be choosing not to do the task of sharing and spreading His love within
one’s means. However, one has to be careful about the double-edged sword known as the sense of
individual identity or the self. The self that makes one rise above the obstructions and render service may
also come back and impart the doer with the sense of doership.
Service, in any form, is a way of spreading God’s message and sharing His love with fellowmen. Such
service needs to be done, diligently, meticulously, with whole heart and spirit, and most importantly
humility. Such service, whether for a social purpose or to promote spiritual awakening, will be successful.
Shri Dabholkar wrote Sai Satcharithamritha only after duly humbled by Sainath. The humility of Dasganu
Maharaj reflected in his costumes. The most humble Booty was abundantly blessed for his construction
was consecrated due to Baba’s samadhi mandir.
If one word describes the nature of a Sai devotee, it has to be “Humility”. God of Gods, Shri Sai Baba
called Himself, simply a servant of God. Portrayed as the humblest of the humble and the most merciful,
Baba has several times stressed the importance of humility. Humility is the most required attribute of a
Sai servant and only those who believe this and practice are honored at Baba’s court. The services of
such, whether towards a spiritual cause or other, will accomplish its objectives.

A Person, who has controlled his mind, can achieve any success in his life. How far you are trying to control your mind?
The mind that judges not others ever remains tension-free.

  • For All My Friends
    ;D ;D ;D

A friend is someone we turn to
when our spirits need a lift.
A friend is someone we treasure
for our friendship is a gift.
A friend is someone who fills our lives
    with beauty, joy, and grace.
And makes the whole world we live in
    a better and happier place.

    AND
    Friendship is a priceless gift,
that cannot be bought or sold.
But it's value is far greater
than a mountain made of gold.

For gold is cold and lifeless,
it can neither see nor hear.
And in a time of trouble,
    it is powerless to cheer.

It has no ears to listen,
    no heart to understand.
    It cannot bring you comfort,
or reach out a helping hand.

So when you ask God for a gift,
    be thankful if he sends...
    Not diamonds, pearls or riches,
but the love of real true friends.

Thank you my friends for being so nice always. JaiSaiRam  ;D
