In Sai philosophy, inanimate things like dust, ashes(udi), coins,
photographs, books are treated with respect on the acceptance that
they have the same divinity in them and, therefore, contain
intrinsic value.
Sai believed that human beings having been bestowed with the unique
faculty of rationality should conduct themselves as sterwards or
vanguards of the other components of the eco-system, such as
animals, plants and the earth.
They are helpless, dumb creation of God and need love, care and
concern.
Therefore, Sai used to advice his devotees to feed the animals
whenever they got the oppurtunity and himself used to share his food
with them.
As is illustrated in Sai Satcharitra, once Sai happened to come
across two goats.
He caressed and fondled them and bought them for a high price which
surprised his devotees.
He also asked his devotees to purchase 4 kgs, of lentil(dal) at his
own cost and feed the goats.
After that was done, Sai returned the goats to the owner.
Another incident also reveals a great eco-spritual truth propounded
by Sai.
One day Sai asked Laxmibai, to get some food as he was very hungry.
Laxmibai went and immediately returned with some bread and
vegetables and placed them before Sai.
Sai took it up and gave it to a dog.
Laxmibai felt bad at that action of Sai and when she expressed her
feelings Sai explained " The appeasment of the dog's hunger is the
same as Mine.
The dog has got a soul; the creatures may be different but the
hunger of all is the same though some speak and others are dumb.
Know for certain, that he who feeds the hungry, really serve me with
food." The above stories reveal the inter-relatedness of all beings
and events of this cosmic family. Sai had no house, no land.
He belonged to nature, to the earth.
As the modern ecologists say earth does not belong to man but man
belongs to earth. " Human beings rent an apartment called nature.
God is, quite literally, the landlord. He expects compliance and
basic principles of etiquett in the use of his creation." Sai used
to warn his devotees of the dangerous disposition of man
called 'greed' or 'avarice'. Even in the Bhagavad Gita it is stated
as one of the ways to Hell. In Ishavasya Upanishad the injuction is
given as ' ma gridhah kasyasvid dhanam' - (do not covet other's
wealth). Greed is something that seperated humanity from itself, the
world and God.
