Why Good Things Happen to Bad People

  • Once there were two friends, one was a Gurmukh and the other a Manmukh. Their friendship was deep but Gurmukh believed in God while Manmukh did not. Gurmukh would wake up early in the morning, take a bath and recite the holy hymns while Manmukh would still be in bed sound asleep.

Once they were going on a journey through the forest. As they were passing through the forest Manmukh found a bag of coal. He was very happy because he could sell it and make some money. As they further walked while talking about how lucky Manmukh was to find the bag of coal, Gurmukh screamed with pain. It appeared that a splinter went in Gurmukh’s leg. While Gurmukh was in pain, Manmukh started laughing. Gurmukh was surprise and asked him that why was he laughing. Manmukh said, “You have been worshipping God everyday and what you got is a splinter in your leg. I have never worshipped God and I still got a bag full of coal from which I can make money.”

An old wise man happened to be passing them when he heard Manmukh’s comments. The old man had a big ironic smile on his face. Manmukh was astonished when he saw the old man smile. Manmukh asked the old man to what was he smiling? The old man replied, “You are naïve. You do not worship God. You were destined to find a bag of diamonds today if you have been worshipping God. And Gurmukh, you were destigned to die at the moment you got the splinter in your leg. Because you have been worshipping God, the pain of death simply turned into a splinter.”

  • Om Sai Ram !

    Great food for thought !

I have experienced it and probably others have also. Many devotees who have been praying to Sai Baba for a long long time, face such difficulties, while others who hardly believe in God or Sai Baba seem to have no problems at all. Many devotees also tend to feel that Baba is not protecting/ helping them in their bad times and tend to lose hope.

How many of us can think like the above story and feel contented ???

  • Why good people are suffering?
Some people say that even good people are unnecessarily harmed. They criticize God. You cannot decide any person as a good person. Did you observe him every minute from his birth? You also think yourself as a good person. Are you aware of your sins done in your childhood? You might have harmed an innocent insect in your childhood. Do you remember that? Even mental feelings are sins, which may not be expressed in words and actions. The feelings of the mind are the source of words and actions. Therefore the feeling may not hurt others today. But tomorrow it will hurt others which will come out in words and actions. In fact, intention is given more importance in the crime according to law. The judge gives more importance to the intention in giving the punishment. You are walking on the road and the ant is killed by your foot, without any intention. There is no punishment for such sins. But when you kill the same ant with intention, you are punished by God. Therefore mind is the source of action.

If somebody harmed really a good person, then also leave it to God. You should not revenge. Why? The reason is that you cannot judge the exact nature and line of the case. You do not remember your own sins. Some times you do the sin thinking that it is good. You cannot be the standard in judging your own sins. Only the Lord can decide. Therefore, if somebody harmed really a good person, in the view of the Lord also, then the Lord himself will punish him.

You cannot take the law and order in to your hand. You have to refer the case to the court. Let the Judge decide, and punish the criminal. Therefore the Lord said, “Revenge is Mine”. If the revenge is justified, the Lord will certainly punish. The Lord will not revenge if you pray Him to do so. The Lord, will not excuse even if you recommend the unjust case.

Neither you have the power to punish nor to excuse anybody. The reason for this is that you are not omniscient. If a sinner realizes the sin and repents, the punishment is reduced. After repentance if you do not repeat the sins, the punishment is cancelled. If the sinner does not repent, he will repeat the sin again and again. Such sinner can be controlled only by punishment. If this is not true the police department has no use. There are some sinners who can be controlled only by third degree treatment. If such punishment and revenge are not required, and if everybody can be transformed by preaching, then what is the necessity of the existence of’ Hell and Liquid Fire’.

If such possibility of transformation by love and knowledge is there, then why the Lord mentioned the word ‘revenge’ at all? Therefore this means that there are some sinners who cannot be transformed by love and knowledge. Some clever people criticize Lord Rama and Lord Krishna, who have resorted to punish the sinners. Such clever people should answer about the word ‘revenge’ uttered by the Lord and also should explain the mention of the liquid fire in the scriptures. If all the human beings can be transformed through love and knowledge such words should not have been mentioned in their scriptures.

  • Dear Dattaswami ji

There are contradictions in your own theory ..

    You say

    Quote
If somebody harmed really a good person, then also leave it to God. You should not revenge. Why? The reason is that you cannot judge the exact nature and line of the case

    And

    Quote
Neither you have the power to punish nor to excuse anybody.
    And

    Quote
If a sinner realizes the sin and repents, the punishment is reduced.

How can you use the word sinner, when you cannot say whether a person is good or not. Secondly, if you cant punish and excuse, then what to do ?

What you are saying is that God is the ultimated Judge. I definitely agree to that. But that does not mean, I just see everything.

Till the time we are doing things, for our own sake - i.e. we are not waiting for food to come to us. We are trying to get our own food. We are waiting for us to get jobs, we are trying to get jobs, we are sending in applications. We are trying to "do".

Till such a time, we must accept to the "best of our knowledge". Two people are fighting, we should go and stop it. We are not in a position to see everything as Baba's leela and leave it at that. Even Krishna asked Arjuna to do his "duty".

We have to do our duty. We might not know our duty completely, but to the extent we know we should strive for it. We act "based on what we know", whether complete or partial. In the same sense, although we might not be able to define a good person and a bad person, but that does not mean not to take a stand and to stop the wrongful (again in our own opinion) acts.

    Quote
If all the human beings can be transformed through love and knowledge such words should not have been mentioned in their scriptures.

Each person is Divine. Change can come only through love not through anything else.

Please dont get offended Dattaswamiji, these are my opinions. If you have time, please clarify them.

  • asterias;

You must realize that the whole world is the kingdom of God as stated by Jesus. Any injustice will be punished by Him and you need not worry about it. Your view of the punishment is revenge but His view of punishment is to transform the soul. If somebody has stolen your money, don’t pray to God to punish that person. Everything is recorded by Him unlike the courts which register the case only when a complaint is given.

The enquiry by God takes place immediately. Sometimes you find no punishment from God and you are scolding God. The silence of God means that the enquiry was completed and the judgment was “no punishment”.  In the previous birth, you might have stolen money from that person and today you paid along with the compound interest. In this case there cannot be punishment and the enquiry was over. Since you do not know this, you mistake God for His silence.

Suppose such background is not there, then you will get your money with interest in some other way which is compensated by God. That person will lose the money along with the interest. You will see it with your eyes. But suppose you cursed that person with revenge, you will receive the punishment in addition to the above. Kauravas stole a share of wealth of Pandavas and finally they lost their whole kingdom. Pandavas gained the total kingdom which is double the share. But Draupadi was cursing Kauravas aspiring always for the revenge.

She was also punished for this as she lost all her children. Therefore, we should not scold even our enemy even by words or mind. God takes care of the entire case. If the injustice wins, it is a black mark for His administration only. He is well aware of it and will take the necessary action. He is more serious in your case than yourself.  Unlike the court, He does not require registration of case or witness or advocate. When Hiranyakashipu tortured Prahlada, Prahalada kept silent and did not curse him in any way.

The Lord took very serious action in that case. Thus you have to keep God at every step as the basis in the worldly life also (Pravrutti). Jesus told that unless you excuse others, you cannot be excused by God. Your enemy will be punished if he does not excuse others. Such behaviour which indicates the full faith on God at every step of the life is divine Dharma in Pravrutti or Nivrtutti.

Do not link your service to any fruit from God.  Link the fruits to your own actions. Some times the actions fail and unexpected negative results appear.  People think that a good deed has given a bad result and bad deed has given good result.  Based on this, people doubt the existence of the divine system of cycle of deeds.  Every action has its corresponding result after some time.  The time gap may be even after this life.  Some actions give results at once.  If you put finger in the fire, it will burn immediately.  But generally the actions are enquired by the divine system under the supervision of the God and the result of the action may be after the some time in this life or may be even after this life.  The time gap is a decision of the judge and not yourself.  You might have done some good deed and its result may be received after ten days on a particular day at 10.30 am.

You might have done a bad deed on that day at 10.29 am and its results will be received at a particular time after some days.  Now the observers think that the good result at 10.30am is the effect of the bad deed done at the 10.29 am. The observers criticize the divine system of God.  This cycle of deeds is a very complicated multidimensional network system with so many parameters of time and place correlated with each other  (Gahanaa Karmano Gathih….Gita).  The superimpositions and coincidence of some actions and some other fruits mislead you to understand the intricate system.  Except God no body can analyze this system of network.  The deep analysis of all the parameters is impossible for a human brain.  Therefore, never criticize the administration of God and unnecessarily earn the sin.

Yes, one needs to be careful with cause and effect system. In a universe with everything/everybody interconnected, one doesnt know what has led a to particular result. Its better to leave the decision making to a Sadguru like Sai Baba who is there to look after us.

"Once strings are entrusted to a Sadguru, there is no cause for worry" - Baba's sayings.

God's Management of  deeds of a soul

God acts as Father as well as the teacher (Guru) in the case of any soul.  Since God created the soul, He is the Father.  But at the same time He is the teacher who trains every soul to come up in the spiritual path.  Generally in the world the father is different since teacher is separate.  But here in the case of any soul the real Father and the real teacher is only one and that is God.  Therefore, God is always kind as Father and is strict and harsh as teacher.  But the harshness of the teacher is apparent only and in reality the harshness is kindness only.  Hence, basically God is always kind.  God appears harsh as the teacher and appears kind as Father.

Since, the teacher is basically kind even in his harsh attitude also, God is always kind in reality or in the basic sense.  The souls have done continuous sins and continuous good deeds and if the results are to be given based on the same sequence and span of time, there will be continuous punishments for long time and continuous happiness for another span of long time.  Then it will be summer for one year and winter for one year. But the kindest God has re-arranged our results in such manner so that our human life is made with alternative good and bad results so that there will be summer for two months and winter for two months so that the two years are made with alternative couple of months of summer and winter. Neither summer nor winter bores with continuity and both summer and winter with the span of one year each gets exhausted.

The punishments are used to remove the ignorance and happiness is given as an interval between punishments.  The punishments are also selected in such a way so that their intensity is suitable to the frequency of requirement for the transformation in the life again and again.  This means that a particular soul requires a particular punishment of a specified intensity suitable to the degree of ignorance of the soul and based on the same, the duration of the punishment also varies from one soul to the other.  According to the requirement, a suitable portion from the result of the sin is cut like a piece from a large cake.  The size of the piece depends on the requirement of the nature of the soul.  The sizes of the pieces of the salt (bad result) and sweet (Good result) cakes depend upon the duration of treatment and interval required by the nature of the soul.

The salt cake is a medicine for the ignorance and the sweet cake is the food during the treatment for the patient-soul. The left over cakes are used for the external hell and heaven in the upper world.  Whatever may be the place (hell or heaven or earth), the punishments are given for the treatment of ignorance only. In the earth the punishments are used as medicines but in the hell the punishments are used as the final surgery for removing the ignorance.  In any case only the kindness of God is always reflected.  Thus, God can be seen as Father or Teacher or Doctor giving medicines or surgeon doing operation and in all angles only the kindness is reflected always.  He is always working constantly to uplift every soul. God works as Teacher, Doctor and Surgeon and at the same time the God with an attitude of the Father also observes the possible limit up to which the soul can withstand the treatment.

Once the limit is reached, God will regain the attitude of Father withdrawing Himself from the attitude of Teacher or Doctor or Surgeon and as a Father He starts giving the food of happiness for some time.  Remember that He is using the bad and good results of the deeds of the soul only in every action to uplift the soul.

The deeds are done by the soul in a free atmosphere and God has no trace of interference and the same time all this treatment and food arranged alternatively makes the life cycle quite interesting to the soul without boring since continuity of anything is absent.  Otherwise the soul would have got bored and the Samskara (strong feeling) of boring should have followed the soul and the soul must have developed repulsion to this world as soon as it is born in this world.

    Om Sai Ram !

Love for God is called devotion (Bhakti). Love for worldly things is called love (Prema). The basic meaning is same for both love and devotion. There are three strongest worldly chains.

    1) Love between husband and wife.

    2) Love for children.

    3) Love for money.

These three bonds are called ‘Eshanas’. God competes with these three bonds in His tests. One cannot reach even the outer gate of Lord  if one fails in these three tests.

You should practically serve present human incarnation, who is alive infront of you.

In the Chemistry laboratory the practical procedure is given to you and the salt is given.  According to the procedure you have to analyze the substance and find out the name of the salt by yourself.  Veda says that the infinite true special knowledge, which cannot be preached by any one and which generates love and bliss in our hearts is the main characteristic of the Lord.  He possesses super powers but does not use for exhibition due to egoism.  By these confirmatory tests you can find out the fullest form of the Lord (Paripurna Avatara) who is Lord Datta himself.  Of course all the preachers are the human incarnations of the disciples of Lord Datta.  Some are the partial incarnations of Lord Datta like Kalavatara, Amsavatara etc.,

    Om Sai Ram !

    Human incarnation is God Himself

The Paripurna Avatara is that human incarnation of the Lord who radiates the true Divine Knowledge completely. Such a human incarnation can be treated as being identical with the Lord. Let us further analyze the concept of a human incarnation of God and how people understand and approach Him. Let us take an example. Electricity by itself is beyond our reach. It has no form and cannot be seen. However, it can be felt (as an electric shock) only through the medium of a live wire. Without a wire, electricity cannot be felt by us. Thus from the point of view of our perception, electricity is identical with a live wire. The Lord, who is beyond the reach of the devotee, offers the medium of the human body of an incarnation to reach Him. It is indeed the wish of God that the devotee considers the human incarnation of God as God Himself. The devotee who accepts and worships God in the human body of the incarnation indeed worships God Himself.
But alas, not all devotees can do this. Devotees who have completely conquered their ego and jealousy towards other human beings, alone can accept the human incarnation of the Lord as the Lord Himself.

Shri Datta Swami is a Complete Incarnation of the Lord (Paripurna Avatara)

Now when it is stated that Shri Datta Swami is a Complete Incarnation of the Lord (Paripurna Avatara), it does not mean that other incarnations of the past are incomplete or in any way inferior. It only means that Sri Datta Swami preaches the complete true knowledge, whereas other incarnations have not given the true knowledge completely. The same Lord was present in all incarnations and He possessed the complete true knowledge in all the incarnations. However earlier incarnations preached it only partially. This is a reflection not on the incarnations, but on the devotees to whom they preached. The world has progressed a lot in the past thousands of years. The entire population is far more educated and aware today than before. Science and logical reasoning have spread to all levels of society. In ancient times, science was in an undeveloped state. It was bound by the chains of blind beliefs and false logic. Logic (tarka shastra) of the time was based on what was known then. Often times it was outright wrong. E.g. in the analysis of the constituents of creation, space (akasha) was said to have the quality of sound. Modern science has showed us that sound cannot travel in empty space. It needs a medium. Therefore sound cannot be a quality of space. Advancement in modern science has refined human knowledge and logic. It has made it possible for the public to accept and assimilate the complete truth. I give this elaborate explanation because it is very easy to misunderstand.
