Modesty for a superior man does not mean that when attacked he does not mean that when attacked, he does not defend himself. Only a weak man and a coward hesitate to take strong action and justify his action on his nature and gentleness. He draws himself in self-piety. A superior man, when he finds that a weakness in people or in a system cannot be rectified by persuasion, he does not hesitate to take firm and drastic action immediately. The symbol here that he orders the army to discipline his own country. He does not even spare himself. If the weakness has affected him, he immediately disciplines himself or his own group. It is symbolically described as disciplinary one’s own city. This is auspicious and will bring good fortune in the end.
Modesty should not be confused with weakness or indecisiveness. It is true power should not be misused nor should it suppress the merit of other person. When there is need for decisive action, the superior person does not hesitate. He does not do so by display of naked power nor does he suppress the other persons talent or initiative. He proceeds objectively but implements his decision firmly and forcefully. This is auspicious and good fortune continues.
Being modest does not mean shirking of responsibility. In real life, we often see, particularly in large government and bureaucratic organization. There are people who do not take any responsibilities. They cite rules and procedures to justify their inaction and inability. This is not modesty. Everything has its own measure. Here modesty is being carried too far and is being used to justify one’s action. True modesty is one, where one carries on one’s own responsibility, in a proper manner. This is auspicious
Once you have performed a difficult task. You earn recognition, name and fame. With recognition comes opposition, criticism and jealousy from smaller and inferior people. Such people always want to pull down a successful person. A superior man knows this and so he continues his mission in a quiet and modest way. He does not boast or brag about his achievements. That is what is meant by his merit does not show. That is how, a superior man continues in his path of success and achievements.
When you are modest and express your modesty to others, then other people are willing to help you. When you undertake a difficult task about which you have no previous experience, you need help from other people and he completes his task successfully. He is continuously learning new things through his perseverance.
Crossing the great ocean symbolizes difficult and dangerous undertaking. One can undertake and accomplish such a difficult task, like crossing the ocean if one does not carry any extra baggage. The extra baggage is our past glory, pride about our past achievements and past prejudices. All these past baggage constitute immodesty. A superior person travels light, as he does not carry any past baggage and that constitutes his modesty. H has his singular focus on the task and is not handicapped by his past. Such a modest person can then routinely cross the great ocean.
