ON THE EVE OF GURUPURNIMA...........

  • What is the difference between a Guru, Sadguru and Mahaguru?

Gurus are not just spiritual gurus. Some teach music or dance forms; they have their particular gharanas and schools. Some gurus teach yoga and meditation. Then there are sadgurus or maha-gurus who may have left the human form but disciples continue feeling their presence even after. Mahagurus exist in higher planes of consciousness. The Buddha, Krishna, Jesus, Kabir, Guru Nanak, Sai Baba and other enlightened mystics exist in such realms of consciousness.

The word 'guru' means heavy with heaven, with joy, ecstasy, svaha; heavy like a rain cloud ready to shower on any body who is thirsty, ready to share. Guru means heavy, heavy with heaven...A guru is one who makes you free. A guru is one who delivers to you freedom; he liberates you.

Kabir sang thus: "It is the mercy of my true guru that has made me to know the unknown;/ I have learned from him how to walk without feet,/ to see without eyes, to hear without ears, to drink without mouth, to fly without wings;/ I have brought my love and my meditation into the land where there is no sun and moon, nor day and night".

"Guru means one who has gravitation, around whom you suddenly feel as if you are being pulled. He is a tremendous magnet, with only one difference: he has charisma. You are pulled towards him. A man of charisma may become a great leader, a great politician. Adolf Hitler had charisma. Then what is the difference between a charismatic leader and a guru? The difference is tremendous: When you are pulled towards a guru you are pulled inwards, not outwards".

When you are pulled towards Kabir, Nanak and Buddha, Sai Baba you feel that you are being pulled towards them and at the same time you are being pulled inwards. So the closer you come to your guru, the closer you come to your self. The more you become attracted towards the guru, the more you become independent. The more you become surrendered to the guru, the more you feel that you have freedom you never had before.

If you are pulled towards someone and that pull creates slavery, he is not a guru. That man may have charisma, but you will be going away from your self. It will be an infatuation. Avoid such people. Remember, if your surrendering gives you freedom, then the man is a guru, a master. By surrendering to the guru you gain more will power, you become powerful, not powerless.

The guru functions as a mediator; via the guru, you arrive at your own self. Because you cannot go directly, he helps you. A true guru will never impose himself or his lifestyle on you. He will never give you rigid discipline. He will not enforce anything on you, regiment you. He will not try to create a soldier of you. He will help you to be yourself, whatsoever that is. He will help to give you more and more understanding about yourself. You will become more and more centred, rooted, near him.

More and more you will feel he has given you back to yourself — that which was lost or forgotten, he has made you aware of it.

    ON THE OCCASSION OF GURUPOORNIMA

Oneness of Guru-Shishya As Divine Lovers..............

We are all born with an innate desire to find the supreme divine being. From this longing sprang the concept of a guru who can help us seek answers to all our problems. The Indian spiritual journey is inward and self-centred. The guru concept spread far and wide, demolishing the castles of ego.

Gurus and shishyas who followed their vision evolved a guru-shishya parampara. Faith, trust, devotion, dedication and unconditional surrender were the pillars of mutual understanding. With the passage of time we found ourselves suddenly confronted with greed and a new social conditioning replacing the age-old systems. The gurushishya relationship underwent a dynamic change. A guru was now considered a friend, philosopher and guide. Somewhere down the line, the original concept of the guru-shishya being Divine lovers was lost.

It was the guru’s grace that moved mountains; it was her wisdom and unbound love that filled the world. Somewhere, the shishya was lost. His agony to know the universal truth disappeared in the corridors of “seva”.

The shishya now stood at the crossroads of technology and belief, value and gain, individual and mass identity. The one-to-one passionate relationship got lost. Gurus became available online, on tapes and DVDs, in books — everywhere. All this left a vacuum, as gyan was available long-distance with little room for divine interaction.

The soul yearns the touch of a divine lover as personified by the guru. No relationship can be as pure and transcendental as the one between guru and shishya.

The soul-call created in some the awareness that there is a guru within. Delving into itself, the soul can draw from its own depths the seeds of truth and discover the guru within, an eternal reservoir of love.

Only the grace of the guru within can help you acquire the wisdom that there is nothing to renounce except the illusion of “I, me, myself ”. When you give up something and accept a set of beliefs which are not true to your nature, you fall prey to the wandering mind and get disconnected from your original self. You experience the agony of separation. It is like a mango tree wanting to grow almonds.

A guru helps you realise your true nature as she helps you fulfil your destiny, whatever that may be. Only a guru can do so for she has realised her true nature and lives in complete consciousness. All illusions are removed as two divine lovers experience nothing but Oneness.

There are two types of shishyas: One who is never satisfied with the external world but is satisfied with the internal one. The other is content with the external but is dissatisfied within, having a sense of deep divine discontent.

This shishya lives from moment-to-moment, from mind to heart and moves still deeper and in a flash realises that the lover is freed from the object of love and the worshipper is liberated from worship and the shishya is liberated from the guru, for he has now become the guru.

  • What is the significance of Gurupurnima?

Gurupurnima is called the day of the Master. Actually, it is the day of the devotee. As a student you probably went to primary, middle and senior school. You collected information; you learned about the mind, about computers, mathematics, how two plus one is three. A student collects information. Information, however, is not knowledge; it is not wisdom.

Then there is the disciple who follows the example of the Master. But a disciple is with the Master to imbibe wisdom to help improve his life, for the sake of attaining enlightenment. He has a purpose, a cause, so he is not just collecting information. He goes a little deeper. He is trying to bring about transformation in his life. He wants to make sense of his life. That is a disciple. A disciple is still centred on himself, so he grows gradually and one day might get enlightened.

Then, there is the devotee. A devotee is not there for wisdom only. He is simply rejoicing in love. He has fallen deeply in love with the Master, with Infinity, with God. He doesn’t care as to whether he gets enlightened or not. He doesn’t care as to whether he acquires a lot of wisdom or not because every moment he is immersed in divine love: That is enough for him. A devotee is difficult to find. Students, there are in abundance, disciples are a few, but devotees are rare.

Everything is God, who is present in everything, so it is great to become a devotee. Do you see this? Everything, whether you want it or not, is already God, but when love and devotion has flowered in you totally, you become a devotee. Attraction is everywhere, love is somewhere, but devotion is rare. Devotion is beautiful. A student comes to the Master with tears in his eyes. There is so much pain and when he leaves, he is carrying the same tears, but the quality of the tears is different, they are of gratitude, of love. Entire creation is longing for only one thing, the transformation from salty tears to sweet tears.

The Buddha’s disciple Sariputra, got enlightened. The Buddha told him, “Now go ahead, go into the world and preach, teach and do the same work I do. Carry on my work”. Now Sariputra left, but he was crying and people asked him, "Why are you crying when you are enlightened?” He said, "Who cares about enlightenment, it could have waited, I would have waited. I didn’t even bother about it or ask for it because the joy of being at the feet of the Buddha was so great. Being a devotee was so great, now I am missing it. I would have preferred that to enlightenment".

When Krishna was leaving his body, he spoke to his friend Uddhava with tears in his eyes. "These Gopis are so beautiful and I cannot bear the amount of devotion they have for me. Go and tell my devotees that only they can free me of their gratitude and of their love". He rejoices, "Go tell them that where my devotees sing, I am right there".

Love is something that even the Divine rejoices in. Infinity longs for you as much as you long for it. It is waiting to receive you. God is as anxious as you are to be close. So when a devotee flowers on this planet, God is happy. That is why Gurupurnima is the day of the devotee.

  • Sai Ram,

    Sai Ram Ramesh Ji,
I thought of not repeating the same what other says about your post, but there is no other way to me ... I have to.
Your posts are wonderful and opens the eye. that too the story about budha "enlightment" and the above post have touched my (our) heart.

Here, now in our gurupoornima day I am going to keep one request to you.

I think you are a good meditator. Please tell us how to start meditation in a formal way, because I have started many time and couldnt concentrate on that and left in the half.
So, Ramesh Ji please instruct us step by step how to meditate.
I am sure, I will definitely implement what you say.

Thank You Ramesh Ji and each and every soul here.
Once again I wish you all a very happy Gurupoornima Day.
