Shri Sai Satcharitra

Chapter IX

Bharit (eggplant raita)  

Ingredients  

1 big eggplant, 1 small onion,
3-4 green chilies,
1 1/2 cup yogurt,
coriander leaves,
salt,
and sugar(optional).

For tempering:
2 tsp oil,
1 tsp mustard seeds,
1/2 tsp asafoetida,
 
 
Method
1. Rub some oil to the surface of the eggplant and roast eggplant over direct flame flipping the sides a couple of times for even roasting.

2. After half an hour, or when the skin of eggplant loosens up from the inner flesh, insert a knife and check if the inner portion of eggplant has turned soft. Remove eggplant from the fire.

3. Peel off the skin and take only the inner flesh of the eggplant. Scoop out black seeds, if any. Mash it with a spatula or grind coarsely in a chopper / grinder.

4. Chop chilies and beat the yogurt. Make vertical thin pieces of onion. Combine beaten yogurt, chopped onion, chopped chilies, salt, sugar and the mashed eggplant.

5. Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds. When they start spluttering, add asafoetida. This is a tempering for the bharit.

4. Pour this tempering over the prepared mixture. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve fresh.

Dear  subhasrini ji,
 Thanks a lot for the recipe........yesterday I read ur post and in evening got eggplants from market let us see when Sai wants me to cook it for him.......and hope he likes my preparation......and yes if he likes it then all credit will surely go to u......and if not then I will bear the brunt!!!!!

Sairam Subhasriniji,

Thank you for the recipe. Whenever I read these chapters I was thinking how it will prepare, what will be the taste etc etc. I am from the southern part of India, so I never cook and offer these things to Baba. Anyway this Thursday Baba will get my Bharit. Credit goes to you.

Dear Ayi
I wish I can cook it and Baba comes in some form to accept it. Ayi baba also likes walpapdi, i read so in Sai Satcharitra. I tried to try that during my visits to shirdi but in vain. Probably i have been behaving glutonus.

thanks a lot !
I had an intense desire to prepare bharti for baba last thursday...it was evening, and i had totally forgotten about it ,just we were preparing for dinner when i was reminded..Baba and his Leelas are great!
i immediately checked this recipe and prepared it!i felt so good and serene inside of me while serving it to baba...
i know he relished it and so did we.
