Two to three months prior to Ganesh Chaturthi, life-like clay models of Lord Ganesha are made for sale by specially skilled artisans. They are beautifully decorated & depict Lord Ganesh in various poses. The size of these statues may vary from 3/4th of an inch to over 25 feet.

Ganesh Chaturthi starts with the installation of these Ganesh statues in colorfully decorated homes and specially erected temporary structures mantapas (pandals) in every locality. The pandals are erected by the people or a specific society or locality or group by collecting monetary contributions. The mantapas are decorated specially for the festival, either by using decorative items like flower garlands, lights, etc or are theme based decorations, which depict religious themes or current events. The statues are worshiped with families and friends.



The priest, usually clad in red silk dhoti and shawl, then invokes life into the statue amidst the chanting of mantras. This ritual is the Pranapratishhtha. After this the ritual called as Shhodashopachara (16 ways of paying tribute) follows. Coconut, jaggery, 21 modakas, 21 durva (trefoil) blades of grass and red flowers are offered. The statue is anointed with red unguent, typically made of Kumkum & Sandalwood paste . Throughout the ceremony, Vedic hymns from the Rig Veda, the Ganapati Atharva Shirsha Upanishad, and the Ganesha stotra from the Narada Purana are chanted.

For 10 days, from Bhadrapad Shudh Chaturthi to the Ananta Chaturdashi, Ganesha is worshipped. On the 11th day, the statue is taken through the streets in a procession accompanied with dancing, singing, and fanfare to be immersed in a river or the sea symbolizing a ritual see-off of the Lord in his journey towards his abode in Kailash while taking away with him the misfortunes of his devotees. All join in this final procession shouting "Ganapathi Bappa Morya, Purchya Varshi Laukar ya" (O father Ganesha, come again early next year). After the final offering of coconuts, flowers and camphor is made, people carry the statue to the river to immerse it.

 
Street festivities in Hyderabad during the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi.The main sweet dish during the festival is the modak (modagam or modakam in South India). A modak is a dumpling made from rice flour/wheat flour with a stuffing of fresh or dry-grated coconut, jaggery, dry fruits and some other condiments. It is either steam-cooked or fried. Another popular sweet dish is the karanji (karjikaiin Kannada) which is similar to the modak in composition and taste but has a semicircular shape.

Public celebrations of the festival are hugely popular, with local communities (mandalas) vying with each other to put up the biggest statue & the best pandal. The festival is also the time for cultural activities like songs, dramas and orchestra and community activities like free medical checkup, blood donation camps, charity for the poor, etc.

Today, the Ganesh Festival is not only a popular festival - it has become a very critical and important economic activity for Maharashtra. Many artists, industries, and businesses survive on this mega-event. Ganesh Festival also provides a stage for budding artists to present their art to the public. The same holds true for Hyderabad too.

For the year 2007 in the Western Calendar, Ganesha Chaturthi commenced on Saturday, 15 September and its allied festival for Ganesha's mother, Gauri (a form of Parvathi) called Gauri Puja comes on September 13 (the day before) .

गणेश के विभिन्न रूप

जय गणेश लम्बोदर: वक्रतुण्ड विध्नेश।गजानन विकट महोदर, शुभकर सुमुख गणेश॥'देवों मेंप्रथम पूज्य गणेश के विभिन्न अवतार और अनेक रूप हैं जिसका संक्षिप्त विवरणगणेश पुराण में और विशद वर्णन मुदगल पुराण में मिलता है। इन पौराणिक कथाओं के अनुसार गणेशजी के अनेक रूप हैं जिनकी विभिन्न भूमिकाएं हैं। गणेश के चार अवतारों की कथा उल्लेखनीय हैं:- आदिकाल में दशभुजी आदिगणेशका अवतार ब्रह्मा की सृष्टि की श्रीवृध्दि के लिए हुआ था। जब ब्रह्मा सृष्टि की रचना कर रहे थे, तो मधु-कैंटभ जैसे दानव उनके सृष्टि को नष्ट करने लगे जिन्हें भगवती कैटभी एवं भगवान मधुसूदन ने मारा। उसके बाद जब ब्रह्मा की सृष्टि को गणासुर, रूद्र केतु और उसके पुत्र नारान्तक नष्ट करने लगे तो देवों के रक्षार्थ आदिति ने आदिशक्ति की आराधना की। आदिशक्ति महादुर्गा ने सुरभि के गोबर से दशभुजी गणेश को बना दिया और उन्हें देवों के रक्षार्थ अपना वाहक सिंह प्रदान कर अपने अस्त्र-शस्त्रों से लैस कर दिया। दशभुजी गणेश ने सिंह पर सवार हो महादुर्गा के अस्त्र-शस्त्रों से लैस हो गणासुर और रूद्रकेतुआदि को मार डाला। तब धूम्रकेतु के बेटे नारान्तक और देवान्तक नेउनके साथ घोर युध्द किया जिन्हें महोत्कट गणपति ने मारगिराया। उसके बाद धूम्राक्ष की पत्नी जृम्भा एवं पुत्र अन्धकासुर ने गणेश के साथ माया युध्द किया पर पार नहीं पा सके। अन्त में दैत्येश गणासुर आया जिसे मार कर वे आदिदेव गणेश एवं गणपति कहलाये। उस महोत्कट आदिगणेश का पूजन कर काशीराज ने अष्टसिध्दियां प्राप्त कीं और इन्द्र देवराज हुए। शिव विवाह के शुभ अवसर पर इसी गोबर के बने गणेश शुभकर की पूजा हुई थी।पुन: सतयुग में मिथिला के राजा चक्रपाणि के दुरदम्य पुत्र सिन्धु के वध लिए षट्भुजी गणेश काअवतार हुआ। दैत्यराज सिन्धु सूर्य की आराधना कर शक्तिशाली हो गया था और विष्णु को भी हराकर उनसे लक्ष्मी छीन ली। देवोंकी स्तुति पर महाकाली ने षटभुजी गणेश को प्रकट किया जो मोर पर सवार हो सिन्धु को मारने चले। छ:भुजी गणेश ने सिन्धु के सेनापति वृकासुर को पहले मारा, तब सिन्धु का वध कर विष्णु को पुन: श्रीपति बनाया और विष्णु नेशुभंकर गणेश का पूजन किया। जब शिव ने दक्ष प्रजापति के यज्ञ को विध्वंस करा दिया था तो गणेश चरित्र के रचयिता मुदगल ऋषिके निर्देशानुसार षटभुजी गणेशकी पूजा कर दक्ष प्रजापति ने यज्ञ आरंभ किया तो वह सफल हो गया। अत: गणेश जी शुभंकर कहलाये।त्रेता युग में ब्रह्मा जी की जम्हाई से उत्पन्न दैत्य सिन्दूर का वध करने के लिए शिवपुत्र चतुभुर्जी गणेश का अवतार हुआ। इनका जन्म शिव की अनुपस्थिति में हुआ था। शनि की कुदृष्टिवश इन्होंने शिव का द्वार रोका जिससे पिता ने ही उनका शिरोच्छेदन कर डाला और फिर गौरी के आग्रह पर संजीवनी विद्या से हाथी का सिर जोड़ दिया, जिससे ये गजानन कहलाये। कामदेव द्वारा शापित क्रौंच नाम गन्धर्व मूषक योनि में अवतरित हो इनकी सवारी बना। मूषक वाहन से गणेश मां-बाप की परिक्रमा कर प्रथम पूज्य हुए और रिध्दि-सिध्दि से ब्याह कर सिध्दिदाता हो गये। इन्होंने महादैत्य सिन्दूर का वध कर देवों की रक्षा की।इन्होंने आठ रूप धारण कर अन्त:करण के दैत्यों जैसे मायासुर, कामासुर, लोभासुर आदि का विनाश किया जिससे ये शुभकर, विघ्नेश, विकट,धूम्रकेतु आदि कहलाये। इन्होंने वक्रतुण्ड रूप लेकर इन्द्र के प्रमाद से उत्पन्न मत्सर को, महोदर रूप लेकर तारक के पुत्र महासुर को, लम्बोदर रूप लेकर क्रोधासुर को, विकट रूप लेकर वृन्दा से उत्पन््रन विष्णु पुत्र कामासुर को, विघ्नराज रूप लेकर शम्बवर के पुत्र ममतासुर को, धूम्रकेतु रूप लेकर सूर्य की छींक से उत्पन्न अहंतासुर को मारा। परशुराम द्वारा दांत तोड़ दिये जाने पर एकदन्त रूप कहलाये गौरी सुत गजानन के आठ रूप हैं जो विघ्न नाशक और शुभंकर हैं। द्वापर में कलिमल के विनाश एवं वेद प्रचार हेतु द्विभुजी गणेश का धूम्रकेतु अवतार हुआ। पाराशर मुनि की व्याहता वत्सला ने गजानन की पूजा कर गणपति को पुत्र रूप में प्राप्त किया जो धूम्रकेतु, शूपकर्ण, सुमुख आदि नामों से जाने गये। पाराशर की प्रेयसी योजनगन्धासे व्यासजी हुए जो वेद की ऋचा बोलते गये और धूम्रकेतु गणेश जी उसे लिखते गए। यही गणेश अन्तरिक्ष युध्द के समय आकाश में धूम्र रूप में छायेंगे और कलियुग का अन्त कर सतयुग का आरंभ करेंगे। शुभकर गणेश के वन्दनीय नाम हैं कपिल सुमुख एकदन्त विकट, सूर्यकर्ण धूम्र गणेशगजमुख गणपति भाल चन्द्र, विनायक एवं विघ्नेश।
