Dear Devotees,

I have queries about श्राद्ध ...I have heard people saying that one should avoid  going outstation during this period , also purchasing new things is not said to be good. Can any member throw some light on this.

what is the significance of श्राद्ध?
What are the things prohibited during these days.

I have many questions ...but not able to put it here as I have no knowledge abt श्राद्ध .

Senior members plz enlighten me on this.

As regards your query regarding Shraddh, I would enlight what I know about Shradh.

Shradh is a period when we remember our beloved ones who are no more in this world. This is just to pay homage to our beloved ones and to show our shradhha towards them as what we are now are because of them and their karma. There is no bar on buying anything new during this period this is only a andhvishwas because shradh is related to persons who are not living. Rather Shradh is Shradhha and Shradha we also show towards god and we remember our beloved ones as god. There is no prohibitation on any thing or act whether to undertake journey or so. One thing only one could try to perform to give food to any needy in the name of our beloved ones who are not living. This could give u peace of mind and you could also take shradh as normal days and perform your works as usual

Shraddh par koi bhi naya kaam start nahi karte...yeh 15 days tak chalte hai...even kuch bhi jaise marrige or kuch bhi new nahi...shopping & all.....clothes, jwellery , property.....etc etc etc....
Aisa hai aur ghar k bade yeh sab baaton ko mante hai.....aur 15 days main kuch fark nahi padata.......

but aaj ka din ASHTAMI...MAHALAKSHMI Ashtami ....aaj ka he aisa din hota hai jo Shradh main bhi SHUBH maana jaata hai...aaj k din maa fast karte hai apne bachcho k liye....(basically boys)
(same as Karva Chauth) nirjal fast hota hai....bas stars (taaro) ko dekh kar jal peete hai phir khana khaa sakte hai.....

I am not sure about other families, but in my whole family we are not supposed to buy a new thing.

Shubh Karya vaise bhi Star aur Planets dekhar kiye jaate hai aur uske special days panchang mai hote hai. buying new things is probably related to our shradha towards our beloved ones who are not alive, as to anything we buy, we should buy for them only during shradh and donate to any pandit or needy persons.

Dear dayalvasnani ji, Annu di & Ravi Bhaiya,

Thanks for enlighting me abt the topic. Actually, I did have the confusion abt purchasing things etc coz my papa says k esa kuch b nahin hai. what if some one purchase a new thing during this period? wud that be considered as "Ashubh"?
Do we have any instructions in vedas or any other spiritual scriptures of do's & don'ts during Shraaddh?

I would also like to know abt " सर्व पितृ अमावस्या " What is the significance of this day & what are we supposed to do on this day.

Kindly throw some light on the above questions.

Dear Kshama,

There is no mentioned about prohibition in vedas or dharamshastras on buying new things during shradh paksh. Sarva Pitrakarya Amavasya is the last day of shradh paksh when shradh of those whose tithi (dates) of death are not known or who dies in accidents or unnatural death.
