  • Sri Sadguru Sainath Math : Swargate, Pune
[Originally published in Shri Sai Leela, (Marathi) for the month of August 1975 ]

Dining His stay at Shirdi, Shri Sai Baba gave inspiration to His various devotees to construct different structures. The stately Samadhi Mandir, which is a favourite place of worship of all Sai devotees was got erected by Shri Sai Baba from Bapusaheb Buti. Similarly He inspired His other staunch devotees Kakasaheb Dixit and Hari Vinayak Sathe to build Wadas in order to provide accommodation to the devotees visiting Shirdi. Those who are conversant with Shri Sai Satcharita need not be told these things. They know them fully well; but the following incident is specially noteworthy because it illustrates how Shri Sai Baba is still looking minutely at the likes and dislikes of His devotees staying at long distances.

In the Swargate area of Pune city, at a distance of about five minutes walk on the North side of the S. T. Depot, there is a spacious and stately Sai Temple. The story of the inspiration for erection of this temple is quite interesting, and it should be known by all Sai devotees as it throws light on the greatness of Shri Sai Baba.

Shri Narayan Dattatray alias Bhausaheb Lombar, who is the owner of the   Sainath   Math at   Swargate, is known not only in Pune. but he is also known to Shri Sai devotees at   other   places outside Pune     Shri   Bhausaheb   was   born at   Kolhapur in 1907. In his family, the worship of Shri Dattatraya   and the   Bhawani devi of  Tuljapur, is being done for a long time.    This practice is so old that it cannot he said when exactly it started. This devotion to God left a deep impression on the mind of Shri Bhausaheb and he   became  a  devotee of the God in his early age.   He  visited Shirdi for  the  first time in 1920 at a very tender age of only thirteen years.    He is continuing that practice even now.  He was a dealer in gold   and silver; but because of the order of Shri Sai Baba, he left that prosperous business and is now entirely doing the worship of Shri Sai Baba.    As  days rolled on, the devotion of Shri Bhausaheb towards Shri Baba went on increasing and he started feeling the acute need of a Sai temple in the Pune city.  Shri Bhausaheb then  wanted to  find out a suitable place for  erection  of  the Mandir.    In 1952, he therefore started   an "Anushthan" in the Aranyeshwar temple in Pune.   On the tenth day, he got a dream in which Shri Sai Baba told him, "Why are you sitting here ?   Now you may go home.   On your way  you will find that your steps are sinking in the earth.    So you should think that it is the proper place for erection of my temple".

According to the above order of Shri Sai Baba, Shri Bhausaheb started for home. On his way, his steps got stuck up at the present site of the temple.  In view of the dream, Shri Bhausaheb at once thought that this was the site hinted at by Shri Sai Baba in his dream.

He therefore rested under a nearby tree for a  moment, when the plan of the temple immediately came   before his eyes as a vision.    When the plan of the temple was thus ready, Shri  Bhausaheb started making further preparations of the temple. The first thing was the purchase of a suitable plot. A plot measuring  18,000 sq. feet was immediately purchased  by Shri Bhausaheb at the site indicated by Shri Sai Baba.  In those days there is nothing else but jungle at the site and the place was infested  with reptiles;  but due to   his staunch devotion to Shri Sai Baba,   Shri   Bhausaheb   put up a tent at the site even under those adverse conditions and hung a photograph of Shri Sai Baba inside the tent.   No sooner this was done, than a sweet fragrance filled the place and five serpents appeared on the scene all of a sudden.    Shri Bhausaheb knew that it was Shri Baba's Leela and hence there was nothing to be afraid of.  He was therefore calm and quiet   and by the grace of Shri Sai Baba, the snakes also subsequently disappeared  without harming anybody.

Three or four days later, Shri Bhausaheb had a further dream in which he was directed to deposit the thing at the place where he would get it and it was really a wonder that when the  foundation of the temple was being dug, the labourers came across a wooden box about seven feet in length.    When the box was opened, another surprise awaited Shri Bhausaheb.    It contained the bones of a human being and the   skeleton   had a saffron   coloured loin   cloth at the proper   place.    Seeing  these strange contents of the   box, Shri Bhausaheb did not know what to do.  He thought of throwing the bones in a sacred river as per the usual custom, as the bones were of a human being.  He therefore put them in a gunny bag and kept them in a corner; but this created another trouble.   One cobra  came and sat on the gunny bag and would not allow anybody to touch it. The existence of that cobra ultimately reminded Bhausaheb of the order of Shri Sai Baba and when he expressed his desire aloud to preserve the bones at the site as per  Shri Baba's orders,  the cobra  silently disappeared and did  not come back thereafter.

After surmounting all these difficulties, the construction work of the temple started in 1951 and immediately in the year 1955, the Padukas of Shri Baba were installed in the mandir at the sacred hands of Saint Dasganu Maharaj. One Parsee devotee of Shri Sai Baba, Shri Sukhiya, who is the owner of the Apollo Theatre at Pune offered to donate the statue of Shri Sai Baba for the temple. An order to cast the statue was therefore placed immediately with S. K. Dongarsane and sons from Kolhapur. A statue of Shri Sai Baba, in a sitting posture and four and a half feet high cast out of an alloy of nine metals, as finally ready and it was installed in the temple in 1956.

The plan of this temple is almost similar to that of the Samadhi mandir at Shirdi. There is a cellar measuring about 10' x 10' just below the statue of Shri Sai Baba. The bones referred to before, which were found while digging the foundation of the mandir, have been preserved carefully here. By its side is the bed of Shri Sai Baba. Shri Bhausaheb sits for "Anushthan" at this place and only he and his son have got access to that cellar. Outside the mandir in an enclosed place, the Dhuni is located and it is kept burning permanently since 1952.

The daily worship of the mandir is attended to by Bhausaheb himself with the help of his son, Shri Shyamrao.   In the year 1949, Shyam   was a boy of four.    At that time once it so so happend that he lost his eyesight all of a sudden.    The pupils in his eyes disappeared  and two balls of flesh appeared in their place.  Blood and puss used to ooze out from his eyes and consequently he was unable to see anything.    All eminent doctors tried their medicines; but no treatment was found to be effective. Shri Bhausaheb therefore   then   thought of trying  some spiritual remedy and one  day when offering his prayer to Shri Sai Baba, he said, "Baba, you are all powerful and merciful.  You know the condition of my son Shyam.    In this  condition his whole life will be miserable.    If you favour him by recovering his eye-sight, I promise to dedicate him to your service for the rest of his life."

Shri Bhausaheb Lombar and his wife

Shri Bhausaheb is a devotee of Shri Sai Baba for a long time and he was therefore sure that Shri Sai Baba will listen to his sincere prayers. The merciful Sai Baba did really listen to the prayers of Shri Bhausaheb and what a wonder! Within a period of two to three years, Shyam recovered completely and got back his eye sight.

The present age of Shyam is thirty years and he is always busy in the worship of Shri Baba. Shashikant, the eldest son of Shri Bhausaheb looks after his business of Riksha and his daughter, Mrs. Sheela Lanjekar, is well -versed in singing. She has given her programme at Shirdi before Shri Sai Baba and was applauded by all, who heard the programme.

In the rear of the Sai mandir, there is, a small room where Shri Bhausaheb takes rest. On every Thursday, Shri Bhausaheb distributes Prasadand Udi to the devotees and gives them advice on various   matters.   In this room there is an imposing Oil-painting of Shri Sai Baba painted by Shri B. D, Tade, a painter of the Prabhat film company.  This painting is over six feet in length and more than four feet in   breadth.

In this painting Shri Sai Baba- is seen begging alms in the Shirdi village.  The painting is life-like and the eyes  thereof  are specially fascinating.  In 1968 there took place a miracle about this frame also.  At that time Shri Bhausaheb was reading   "Navnath Charitra"  week after week.  Once when he was in meditation, he heard  some clapping outside the window.  He thought that it was done just to attract his attention. He just opened his eyes and found that the lips of Shri Sai Baba in the picture opened and some prasad like "Til gul" dropped from it. The lips have remained open since that time and could be seen by anybody even today.

If you are really interested in seeing what Shri Sai Baba gets done from a devotee, who is sincere in his prayers, you should pay a visit to the Sai Baba temple of Shri Bhausaheb Lombar near the Swargate

  • Venkusa – Guru of Shirdi Saibaba
There was a village named Jambavavi, now in the State of Maharashtra, under the rule of a Nizam in those days. In this village, there was a pious Brahmin named Keshava Rao and his wife. Both were devotees of Venkateswara Lord at Tirupathi. As they had no children, they always used to pray to the Lord to bless them with a child. One night, the Lord appeared to Keshava Rao in a dream and told him that one Ramanand Yogi of Kashi would be born as their son shortly. After this Keshava Rao’s wife became pregnant. He used to read the holy scriptures to his wife and explain them in detail. This was an exercise undertaken by him to impart jnana to the child who was in the womb of his wife. His wife gave birth to a male child on an auspicious day. The parents named him Gopal Rao, and imparted several types of education. When the boy reached marriageable age, they performed his marriage with a suitable girl.

Gopal Rao was a person of tact, strength, patience and knowledge. Above all this, he was a person with a helping nature and service. Pleased with his strength and courage, the Peshwas gave a paragana named Jintur as jagir to Gopal Rao to rule over this place. Gopal Rao loved the inhabitants of this place as his own children and ruled over them. He shifted his place of residence to the centrally located village Selu and developed it a lot. He inherited from his father, abundant devotion to Lord Venkateswara. Now and then, the Lord would appear in his dreams. He established an ashram in his fort and gave opportunity to several people to lead saintly lives.

One Evening, when he was taking a stroll in the fort, he found a young lady undressing for taking bath and Gopal Rao’s mind had evil thoughts for a moment on seeing her naked form.Immediately regretting his perverted thoughts, he pierced both his eyes with a needle and lost his sight. Because of this, he could not discharge his duties as jagirdar properly. On the advise of his friends, he performed special puja to Lord Venkateswara and regained his lost eyesight with the blessings of the Lord. From that day, he came to be known as Venkudas ( Lord Venkateswara’s Slave).

Roshan Sha’s wife wanted to hand over the four-year-old boy to the care of Venkusa. But Venkusa was on a pilgrimage. He did not practise discrimination on account of religion, caste or creed. All were equal to him. He used to visit not only temples but also the dargahs and gurudwaras while on pilgrimage.

Once, when he visited the Sawaghahi Dargah in Ahmedabad, he heard the following words coming from there : "Salaam alekum Maharaj! You are born with a purpose. A hundred miles from Selu Village, there is a another village by name Manwat. There Allah, who is born for setting this world right, is being brought up in a fakir’s house. After you go back to Selu from your pilgrimage, the boy will be brought to you. You must accept this boy as your pupil and teach him . This is God’s work . The boy will grown up in your care and will become ‘Guru’ for the entire world."

Venkusa returned to Selu after the pilgrimage . Roshan Sha’s wife brought the boy and handed him over to Venkusa. Thus the boy ( Baba ) came under the care of Venkusa in his fifth year. Roshan Sha named the boy Majida and there are proofs that the boy grew under Venkusa with the name Majida. Venkusa taught the boy all kinds of shastras. The boy who was born with natural Godliness learnt all of them in his early age. Venkusa took the boy along with him to other villages. In the year 1842, during summer, they both came to Shirdi village and they stayed there for 7 days. They took their food in the house of Bayija Bai and slept in the small temples of the village. This means Baba came to Shirdi first in the year 1842. Perhaps because of the food provided to him by Baija Bai, Baba used to call her Sister. Similarly, Baba in his young age came into contact with Nanavali.

Nanavali was younger than Baba. He used to do service at the Samadhi of a great person by name Nanavali, near Aurangabad. Hence, he got the name of Nanavali and was known only by this name. During the tours of Venkusa along with Baba, they met Nanavali for the first time in 1849. Nanavali used to address Baba as Uncle. Having been brought up by Roshan Sha who was a Sufi saint, and later by Venkusa who was a devotee of Lord Venkateswara, Baba understood the important aspects of Islam and Hinduism and also the blind customs in both. Though Venkusa was a Hindu, he used to take Baba to the Samadhis of great persons of both the religions and explain their teachings and theories in detail.
Years rolled by. The boy who was born with a purpose, the incarnation of Lord Shiva, learnt everything related with physical, philosophical and other fields. He also learnt about "Pancha Bhutas" and the importance of the eight directions. He was able to feel the divine power which created this universe, and notice the unstable condition of life, soul, mind and arrogance. He also learnt the connection between these and the sensory organs and how to control desires and command the divine power in the body. A divine light in his eyes, sensibility in talk, calmness in his actions and mature thinking were found in him.

For Venkusa, his joy knew no bounds, for the boy whom he brought up acquired so many divine powers. He used to stare at the boy motionless, and tears would roll down from his eyes. Night and day he would keep the boy with him. He used to bathe him, dress him, feed him and put him to sleep. If sometimes he could not attend on the boy personally, he would suffer mentally. Whether it was natural love for the boy or whether it was the effect of the incarnation of Lord Shiva in the form of this boy, we do not know. Whatever it was, Venkusa’s life was blessed he acted as Baba’s guru , protector, friend, mother and father. Though we do not know what Venkusa looked like, let us imagine and prostrate at his feet for having brought up our Sai, for having moulded him and presented him to crores of devotees throughout the world, let us prostrate at his feet for the second time. Sai is not merely a Guru. He is Samardha Sadguru. For having acted as Guru for such a Samardha Sadguru, let us prostrate at the feet of Venkusa for the third time.

Since Venkusa was teaching the boy the secrets in shastras, the other ashramites posed unnecessary and irrelevant questions which diverted the attention of Guru Venkusa. As he was not able to pay proper attention under such disturbed conditions, he took the boy into the forest and taught him in the different fields of education. The ashramites discovered the place where Venkusa was and sent a few disciples to bring him back to Selu. Suspecting that they were jealous of the boy and hated him, probably might harm him, without loss of time he inducted into the boy some of his powers on Suddha Dashami Day of the month of Asweeyuja. The boy who was just completing 16 years of age appeared fully mature, with divine powers.

Venkusa told the boy that he had done his duty as per God’s decision and the day was not far off when they would be separated. He also told him that having achieved his goal, he would go into Samadhi. As per the Shastras, a disciple should not witness his guru attaining Samadhi, but if he went back to Selu or the neighbouring villages, the people there might harm him. If they continued to be together then also the people who were jealous of them would be haunting them. Therefore, it was necessary that they be separated . On a full-moon day, Venkusa inducted into the boy all his remaining powers. It was decided that Venkusa would return to Selu and the boy would proceed along the shores of Godavari river. The plan was found out by some spies from Selu and the news was carried over to Selu. From Selu, Venkusa’s successors secretly came to the forest and watched their movements.

The people of Selu, thinking that Venkusa had left his family, ashram and properties for the sake of this boy, planned to kidnap the boy so that Venkusa would return to Selu. Sensing such a move, Venkusa protected the boy by staying with him every moment. Since the village people found that it was very difficult to kidnap the boy, they decided to kill him. That night was Chaturdasi, a day prior to full moon. The conspirators were discussing the methods of killing the boy. They had not brought knives or sticks with them. There were no big stones nearby . While this was the situation, Venkusa and the boy prepared to go to sleep.

The boy had peaceful sleep, whereas Venkusa could not sleep as he was preoccupied with thoughts of the boy. One of the conspirators, with a view not to delay their plan further, took a brick which was lying nearby and wanting to kill the boy at one stroke, proceeded towards him. Venkusa who was half asleep, suddenly opened his eyes and found the brick coming towards the boy’s head. He at once put his own head in the path of the brick which hit his forehead and caused bleeding. With blazing eyes, Venkusa cursed him, who fell dead the next moment. Hearing the commotion the boy woke up from his sleep and observed everything. The other two conspirators who were at a distance ran away, lest they also die by the curse of Venkusa. The boy tore off a piece of cloth from his dress and cleaned the injury suffered by Venkusa. They were staring at each other with different thoughts in their minds. While Venkusa was thinking that even at the risk of losing his life, he would hand over the boy as Guru to posterity, the boy was thinking how to repay the debt to his Guru for having protected him. Thus the hearts of Guru and disciple became one, ideas became one, with love and affection in harmony. Such should be the binding force between Guru and disciple.

The sun began to rise in the east with the red rays spreading over the sky. Venkusa and the boy both took their bath in the river. Venkusa milked a nearby cow and puring the milk into the hands of the boy, imparted all the remaining powers he had and commanded the boy to bring to life one of the conspirators who lay dead due to the curse given by Venkusa. The boy washed the toe of the right foot of the Guru and sprinkled this water on the dead person who came alive, saying he regreted his attempt to kill the boy and sought his pardon.

Venkusa wanted to give the boy all the valuable ornaments he was wearing but the boy declined to have them. Instead he requested Venkusa to give him the brick which had hit him on his forehead while saving him (boy) from the murderous attack. Overwhelmed by his request and with tears rolling down from his eyes, Venkusa gave him the brick with his blessings. He wished that the brick alway’s be the boy’s companion and life partner. The boy also requested Guru Venkusa to give him the piece of cloth drenched with blood while cleaning his injury. Moved emotionally by such a request Venkusa tied the cloth piece around the forehead of the boy and declared that it would protect the boy at all times. He told him to proceed along the banks of river Godavari and the place where he found complete peace would be abode. He also advised him to keep away from women and wealth . Afterwards Venkusa proceeded to Selu along with the revived person.
After walking for three days along the banks of River Godavari, the boy reached a place called Kopargaon in the year 1854, Margashira month on the third day after full moon. After taking rest for a day, he again proceeded and reached the village of Shirdi by evening. Not willing to approach anyone for shelter, he began to live under the shade of a big neem tree.

World’s Largest Statue of Shirdi Saibaba (54 Feet)

World’s Largest Statue of Shirdi Saibaba is present in Machilipatnam, Andhra Pradesh. It is about 54 Feet in height and looks very elegant.

  • Nagasai Temple of Coimbatore

In the year 1939, Sri. H.H.B.V. Narasimha Swamji along with Sri A.V. K. Chari and Sri.H.Varadaraja Ayyah and his brother Sri. C.V. Rajan started the Sai movement in Coimbatore and the first institution of Sri Sai Baba in Tamilnadu (erstwhile madras province) was established in Coimbatore. The Institution was named as Sri Sai Baba Mission was put up for darshan of the Devotees. Swamiji entrusted the centre to the care of Sri. A.V.K.Chari in the year 1942. The late Sri.C.Varadaraja Ayyah donated about one acre of land at Mettupalayam Road and a Thatched Shed was erected at the donated land to house the Sri Sai Baba Mission which was later named as Sri Sai Baba Madam in those days and the place was opened for worship to one and all at all times irrespective of class, creed, caste or religion. The Sai Baba Madam was the meeting ground of Sai Devotees in and around the Coimbatore City. Sai Bajans are held regularly on Thursdays.

    Advent of Naga Sai

In 1943 on the evening of the 7th of January, Guru-vara (Thursday) sacred for worship of Baba, a miracle happened! A shining and lustrous Cobra small in size but possessing an unusually big hood with divine marks of Tripundra, Shanka and Chakra appeared before Baba’s picture when the Bhajan was going on in full swing to the accompaniment of drum, cymbals etc., with all the lights on. The Naga stood there in a pose of worship fullness entranced in Baba Music! Waving of lights, aratis etc had no effect on the nerves of the Cobra. People around who had swelled into a crowd of a few hundred stood there in awe and wonder at the wondrous sight of the Naga with spread head. There was no fear for the snake; the proverb that even a battalion of soldiers of valour shiver at the sight of a cobra was falsified. Young and old, women and children in thousands began to pour into the spacious land of the Bhajan Madam to witness the Naga that lingered in the same spot for full 48 hours Baba bhaktas began to shower baskets of flowers in worshipful reference for the Naga. The Cobra was virtually submerged in a mould of flowers but even then, he was immobile. Aartis were performed for the Naga. On the second day of Naga’s advent, photographer came to take a picture of the Naga in its majesty but the latter was immersed under heaps of flowers. No one had the courage to go near the spot where the cobra was lodged and clear the flowers. The only course open to them was to pray. Ho! the Naga jumped out of the flowers heaps and posed for the photograph as if in answer to the prayers of the multitude. One and all were sure for the first time that it was all the work of Sai Baba. The devotees then prayed with fervour and faith to the Naga to clear out and enable them to resort to their routine worship of Baba in the Madam. Then the immobile Naga showed signs of movements went around Sri Sai Baba’s picture and slowly marched out into the open, disappeared into the bush where later an ant-hill (snake’s natural habitat) appeared. The place where the Naga disappeared in held as a ‘Holy Ground’ by devotees and from that day onwards Shirdi Sai Baba in Coimbatore is worshipped as “Sri Naga Sai”.

  • Hejje Pradakshine made easy in this Saibaba Temple at Mysore Road, Bangalore

There is a Beautiful Shirdi Saibaba Temple at Hunsemaradahalli, Off Mysore Road, Bangalore known by the name "Shri Shirdi Sai Anandamayi Temple".

The speciality of this temple is that the temple and the Dwarakamai is constructed just like the Original Shirdi Temple.

More speciality about the temple is that There are Hundred and Eight (108) Stone Blocks erected starting from the left side of the temple in a clockwise manner and the Stone Blocks ends exactly at the right hand side of the temple from where you can enter the temple. This has been done to enable the sai devotees to perform "Hejje Namaskara" wherein a devotee is given the opportunity to Chant Saibaba's name hundred and eight times (108) or utter Sai Astothara before entering the temple. Really an innovative thought indeed by Capt.Mahesh.

The address of the temple is as below:

    Sri Shirdi Sai Anandamayi Temple
    Hunasemaradapalya, Off Mysore Road
Next to Amrith Distillary, 2 KM Off Mysore Road Bangalore.
    Contact Person: Capt. V.V.Mahesh

  • Oldest Shirdi Saibaba Temple of Bangalore

The Shirdi Saibaba Mandir situated at Sriramapuram, Bangalore is the oldest Saibaba Temple of Bangalore. It was started way back in 1943. In this mandir there was an old lady who had seen Shirdi Saibaba. I was fortunate enough to touch her feet and take blessings from her on Guru Poornima Day about 10 years back. Unfortunately the blessed lady is no more. Her grand childrens are running the temple. The addess of the temple is as below:

aap ko bhakt kahana hume uchit nahi lagta kyonki jo bhakt ke shreni me ate  hai use
ahankar, gussa aur moh maya in sabse dur rahna padta ha aur shayad abhi humme ye
sab kuch shesh raha gaya hai isliye hum hamesh (hum pati patni) apne aapko baba ka sewak

kher baba ne humse ek mandir ka nirman karaya wo bhi esi jagah jahan aas pas ke log ke liye baba
ke dharshan karne bahut door jana padta tha.

wahan par baba apne bhakto ke liye khud hi bhetna chahte the bus hume adesh diya
