What is the May Week Labour Arts Festival?

The Edmonton May Week Labour Arts Festival brings together the labour movement, workers and artists to celebrate the achievements of people’s struggles for social and economic justice through visual arts, music, film, poetry and theatre. Through the many artistic disciplines of the festival, May Week provides people with the information, education and inspiration to make positive change in our local and global communities.

The May Week festival is built around May Day (May 1st), which is recognized as the International Workers’ Holiday, chosen over 100 years ago to commemorate the struggles and gains of workers and the Labour Movement. May 1st is also a significant date in the fight for the eight-hour workday, and is tied to the infamous Haymarket Tragedy. May Day is important not only for its historical significance, but also as a time to organize and speak out around issues that are impacting working-class people today.

The Edmonton May Week Labour Arts Festival is a grassroots organization committed to a worker-centered, anti-racist, feminist, queer positive, ability-inclusive and youth empowered vision of social and economic justice.

An excerpt from SSC :

One day at noon, Baba came near Radha-Krishna-Mai's house and said - "Bring Me a ladder." Some men brought it and set it against a house as directed by Baba. He climbed up on the roof of Vaman Gondkar's house, passed the roof of Radha-Krishna-Mai's house and then got down from the other corner. What object Baba had, none could know. Radha-Krishna-Mai was, at that time, shivering with Malaria. It may be to drive off that fever, that He may have gone there. Immediately after getting down, Baba paid Rupees two to the persons who brought the ladder. Somebody asked Baba, why he paid so much for this. He replied that nobody should take the labour of others, in vain. The worker should be paid, his dues promptly and liberally.

If the above incident is understood well by the Landlords and the workers, the feelings of discrimination and the associated problems would never arise among them.

जय सांई राम।।।

कोई धर्म नहीं जिसने श्रम का गुण नहीं गाया
 
आज श्रमिक दिवस है। इस बार इस दिन को जरा अलग ढंग से देखें। जैसे शादी के बारे में कई कानून हैं, बच्चों के बारे में कई कानून हैं, लेकिन आप हमेशा उन्हें नियम-कानून की नजर से नहीं देखते। बल्कि ज्यादातर प्यार, खुशी, रिश्ते और धर्म की नजर से देखते हैं। कानून की नजर से कभी-कभी ही देखते हैं, आमतौर पर तब जब रिश्ता तनावपूर्ण होने लगता है।

मई दिवस को भी हम हमेशा ट्रेड यूनियन के ही ढंग से देखते हैं, इसे किसी और तरह से देखना ही भूल गए हैं। इससे वह जीवन का, हमारे समाज का एक ही पक्ष बन कर रह गया। लेकिन कभी आप श्रम और श्रमिक को धर्म की दृष्टि से देखिए, दुनिया का कोई धर्म नहीं है, जिसने श्रम और श्रमिक की महिमा नहीं गाई हो। कई जगह तो श्रम को धर्म और पूजा तथा श्रमिक को भगवान का दर्जा दिया गया है।

बहुत पहले दक्षिण में एक भक्त कवि हुए थे। उन्होंने अपनी एक कविता में लिखा है, जिस देश में किसान हाथ बांधे खड़े हों वहां साधु-संतों को भी स्वर्ग नहीं मिलता। यानी जहां लोग मेहनत नहीं करते, वहां कोई भी सुखी नहीं हो सकता।

उत्तर भारत में जब सुबह सो कर उठते हैं, आँखें खोलते ही सबसे पहले अपनी दोनों हथेलियों को जोड़कर देखते हैं और पहली वंदना करते हैं:

कराग्रे वसति लक्ष्मी करमध्ये सरस्वती
करमूले तु गोविंद: प्रभाते करदर्शनम्

यानी मेरे हाथों के अग्रभाग में लक्ष्मी, मध्य भाग में सरस्वती और कलाइयों में विष्णु का निवास है। अपने हाथों के दर्शन और उसी में देवताओं के निवास का क्या अर्थ है? जो अपनी सुबह की शुरुआत अपने ही हाथों को देखते हुए और श्लोक के अनुसार विचार करता हुआ करे तो दिन भर उसका ध्यान अपने कर्म पर ही रहेगा। यहीं से मेहनत करने का संदेश मिलता है।

सिख गुरु नानक देव जी एक बार घूमते-घूमते किसी गांव में पहुंचे थे। गांव के अमीर व्यक्ति को जब पता चला तो उसने उनके लिए भोज का आयोजन किया। वहीं एक गरीब किसान भी अपने घर से बाजरे की रोटियां लेकर पहुंचा। नानक अमीर सेठ का पकवान छोड़ बड़े चाव से बाजरे की सूखी रोटियां खाने लगे। अमीर ने पूछा, आपने इतने पकवान छोड़कर ये सूखी रोटियां क्यों स्वीकार कीं? नानक ने पकवान और रोटी साथ-साथ रखे। पहले अमीर के पकवानों को दोनों हाथों से निचोड़ा तो उनमें से खून टपका। फिर सूखी रोटी को निचोड़ा तो उसमें से दूध टपकने लगा। तब उन्होंने गाँव वालों को समझाया, ये रोटियां इस किसान के श्रम से तैयार हुई हैं, जबकि इन पकवानों में गरीबों का खून है। यह श्रम और श्रम करने वाले का महत्व समझाने के लिए ही था।

बौद्ध धर्म की एक शाखा चीन, जापान, कोरिया और वियतनाम में 'जेन' के नाम से मशहूर है। जेन दर्शन के मुताबिक आप भिक्षु बनकर ही धर्म का पालन नहीं करते, बल्कि गृहस्थ जीवन जीते हुए, खेती-बाड़ी करते हुए, मरीजों का इलाज करते हुए या समाज के हित में होने वाले ऐसे सभी काम करते हुए धर्म की ही सेवा कर रहे होते हैं। एक जेन फकीर ने तो यहाँ तक कहा कि बिना काम के एक दिन रहना यानी खाने के बिना एक दिन रहना। मतलब साफ है कि अगर आप किसी दिन काम को हाथ नहीं लगाते तो उस दिन आपको खाने का हक भी नहीं है।

हिंदू धर्म में कर्म के महत्व को रेखांकित करने के लिए ही मनुष्य जीवन के लिए 4 पुरुषार्थ जरूरी बताए गए हैं -धर्म, अर्थ, काम और मोक्ष। जीवन तभी सार्थक होगा जब इन चारों के लिए व्यक्ति प्रयास करे। धर्म के काम करें लेकिन अर्थ का उपार्जन भी जरूर करें। गीता में कर्म का महत्व बताते हुए कहा गया है कि व्यक्ति का अधिकार अपने कर्म पर है, इसलिए उसे सदा सच्चे मन से अपना कर्म करना चाहिए। बाद में फल क्या होगा इसके बारे में नहीं सोचना चाहिए। हालांकि बाद में कुछ लोगों ने इसे समाज में वर्ण व्यवस्था बनाए रखने के लिए दी गई शिक्षा बताया। पर अगर व्यक्ति ईमानदारी से अपना कर्म करता है तो उसकी उन्नति जरूर होती है। 

अपना सांई प्यारा सांई सबसे न्यारा अपना सांई।
