Meaning of Sharanagati

  • Dear Devotees,

I am spending a lot of time these days pondering the real world implementation of the concept of Sarvasya Sharanagati (complete surrender). Sai prescribes surrender of the pancha prana, the 5 life attributes, to Him (or another Guru) as the first step towards understanding God. Now, how do we truthfully implement that in our day-to-day life? If we surrender all to Sai, how do we justify the decisions we take with our so-called Free Will?

If our mind itself is offered to Sai, then how can we claim it to do our daily thinking processes? And other worldly dharmas? What about our body? Do we cease to take care of our body since it now belongs to Sai? Should our interpretation be symbolic or literal?

Ramana Maharishi says that one way to look at it is to ask "Who am I?" and conquer the ego that defines mortal thinking.

Any light you can throw on this will be so much appreciated. I did some thinking just now to I feel that Sarvasya Sharanagati may mean sincerely acknowledging that nothing is ours, we are not the owner of anything in this world and that Sai Himself is the Supreme Doer and Owner of all. Then whatever we do with our mind or body is considered to be done at the behest of Sai. Does this rationale make sense?

dearest Ramu Annayya, your rational makes total sense to me. Total surrender does not mean to shed all responsibility and behave like a little baby. Rather is it an ongoing process of consciousness and a vow that is renewed every day, every moment. The first step is an action or an act of will and from then on it is listening.

The action or act of will is to say to SAI: BABA, all I am, body, mind, heart and soul, all I know of myself and all I don't know - it is yours, totally yours, do with it whatever you wish.
The point about is is: We have to mean it! [;)]

From then on it is listening. We can be fully confident that BABA will always let us know what HE wants us to do and can follow all the nudges HE gives, even against all odds if need be.
It may seem on the outer as though we were "doing" and "having" all kinds of things - yet, we are not, BABA is the Owner, the Doer, the Wirepuller, and we are only following. Allah Malik [:)][;)][:)]

And if and when we do so we will discover that total surrender is total freedom!

To give body, mind, heart and soul to BABA, does not mean that we rid ourselves of them that very moment. I didn't shed my physical body nor did I lose my mind the moment I gave everything into BABA's hands. [;)] But latest at that very moment I realised that all I am and may have is a gift from BABA. So if BABA gives us a gift, our natural reaction will be to take good care of that gift: we will take good care of our bodies - meaning we will try to keep the body healthy and clean and treasure and protect its natural beauty; reason is also a gift, so we will try to implement it to the best of all concerned (following BABA's advice which will always be there in various ways) in all the various decisions big and small we have to take every day. The act of surrender itself opens our hearts to the flow of love, so we will let that love flow towards all of creation including ourselves.

In giving what BABA gave us, back to HIM we permit HIM to use us as HIS instruments. And we will of course strive to become an ever better instrument for HIM. And this again will have an effect on our souls - it is my sincere wish, my feeling and my theory that by becoming an ever better instrument for BABA that divine spark in us may be able to touch that same divine spark in others unaware and awaken in them the desire to -- surrender.[:)]

Thanks for starting such a great topic!

May you always feel surrounded by the sweet sound of BABA's flute of blessings. [;)][:)]

    Om Sai Ram
