Some of the Idols found in the Hooghly. (Gopal Senapati)

HOWRAH: Several metal and stone Idols of Hindu gods and goddesses were fished out from the Hooghly in Howrah's Sankrail on Friday morning. Locals fled with the idols before the cops, who were stationed in the police station next door, could arrive.

Later in the day, police recovered 10 Idols seven of Metal and three of Stone from a local club. But most of the stone-studded ornaments that eyewitnesses had seen on the idols when they were fished out of the river, are missing.

A middle-aged woman, who went for a bath at the ghat adjoining the Sankrail police station around 9 am, accidentally discovered the bag under the water close to the ghat's steps. When she alerted others, they pulled the bag out of the water and discovered that it contained idols.
Some then grabbed an idol or two and fled.

As news of the recovery spread, cops at the Sankrail police station located next door sauntered over to the spot to check what had happened. They later managed to recover 10 idols.

"The bag contained many Idols but police have, so far, recovered only 10 of them. Even those who returned the idols retained the ornaments," alleged Sudhir Karmakar, who returned an Idol.

Two Nadugopal idols (brass), a Radha-Krishna idol (brass), two Kali idols (brass), two Shivlings (black metal),
an image of Shirdi Sai Baba (white stone) and a Trident (brass) were found.
"The largest one a Radha-Krishna idol is just under 2 feet in height. It had stone studded ornaments," said a police officer.

Police have sent the idols to Archaeological Survey of India for evaluation and informed CID. They suspect the idols could have been those stolen from a temple in Panchla some days ago. The Archaeological Survey of India has been asked to estimate the value of the Idols.

Police said the idols had probably been dumped near the river by thieves and had been swept away during high tide.
