Sri Maha Shivaratri means "The Night of Shiva". The ceremonies take place chiefly at night. This is a festival observed in honor of Lord Shiva. Shiva was married to Parvati on this day. This is the night when Shiva is said to have performed the Tandava or the dance of primordial creation, preservation and destruction.

People repeat the Panchakshara Mantra as it is said he who utters the Names of Shiva during Shivaratri, with perfect devotion and concentration, is freed from all sins. He reaches the abode of Shiva and lives there happily. He is liberated from the wheel of births and deaths. Many pilgrims flock to the places where there are Shiva temples.

Once Lord Vishnu and Lord Bramha argued over each other’s prowess. However, Lord Shiva challenged both of them. He appeared as a flaming Linga and challenged the duo to measure the gigantic Linga (phallic symbol of Lord Shiva). Lord Bramha, who took the form of a swan, and Lord Vishnu who became a boar and went to Netherland, were both unable to measure the Shivlinga. Then Lord Shiva came out of the Linga and declared himself the most powerful. Maha Shivratri therefore means the grand night of Shiva. The devotees of Shiva fast during this day and pray to the lord throughout the night. This legend goes to prove the supremacy of Mahadev over other Hindu Gods.

King Daksha, opposed Sati's marriage with Shiva. At a yagnya (holy sacrifice) the king ignored Shiva’s presence and thereby insulted the latter publicly. Sati was so angered by this that she jumped into the sacrificial fire and ended her life. Lord Shiva unleashed his fury at the death of his wife by performing the violent dance, Taandav. He wiped out Daksha’s kingdom, undertook rigorous penance and retired to the Himalayas. The Gods, who feared that the severity of Shiva’s penance might bring an end to the world, revived Sati in the new avatar of Parvati. Shiva-Parvati married and this reunion is celebrated on Maha Shivratri.

Kavitha ji ...thank you so much for the site amd wish all the sai family members A very Happy Maha shivrathri ......it was a blessing in diguise to see the 12 jyothirlingas .....actually we are followers of Maha vishnu and do not worship shiva and parvathi but i have somehow a  a faith that  has made me follow  lord shiva and was feeling like celebrating this great day and what a start you have given it  .....

today it was a great blessing getting to see the 12 jyotirlingas and recieve the mantra ...hope Sai deva is always with us and bless us to serve him better

Sorry if my questions sounds stupid, on my calendar Maha Shivratri is on February 16th.  So does that mean that the celebrations will be tonight or they were last night (after 12am).

And the Jaagaran is tonight only that is till tomorrow morning.
In all Shiva Temples The poojas will continue throughout the night TODAY

महाशिवरात्रि पर्व तपस्या एवं व्रत प्रधान उत्सव है। यह उत्सव व्यक्त से हटकर अव्यक्त में लीन होने का दिन है। भोग से हटकर योग और विकारों से हटकर निर्विकार में गोता लगाकर अपने को डुबाने का उत्सव है। महाभारत में भीष्म पितामह ने युधिष्ठिर को शिव महिमा का वर्णन किया है। शिवरात्रि पर शिव लिंग का पूजन करके शुभ संकल्प विकसित करें अथवा शिव स्वभाव को जाग्रत करें।

ऐंद्रिक सुविधाएं शारीरिक सुख प्रदान करती हैं, लेकिन अपने को 'स्व' के सुख में पहुंचाए बिना सभी सुख क्षणिक एवं निराधार हैं। अनुकूलता का सुख तुच्छ है, जबकि आत्मा का सुख परम शिव स्वरूप है। सौंदर्य से प्रेम करने पर एक दिन प्रीति ढल जाएगी, जिससे दोनों का अहित होगा। इसलिए स्वयं पर कृपा करते हुए परमात्मा से प्रेम ही श्रेयस्कर है। प़थ्वी, जल, तेज, वायु और आकाश का अर्घ्य आत्मशिव की प्रसन्नता के लिए करें तो सच्चिदानंद का शिव का साक्षात्कार करने में सफलता मिल सकती है। जो मानव तटस्थ भाव से व्यवहार करता है, वह शिव की ही पूजा करता है। वर्ष भर में चार महारात्रि मानी गई हैं। मोहरात्रि (जन्माष्टमी), कालरात्रि (नरक चतुर्दशी), दारुण रात्रि (होली) और अहोरात्रि (महाशिवरात्रि)। इनमें किया गया ध्यान, भजन, जप, तप अनंत गुना फलदायी होता है। अहोरात्रि (महाशिवरात्रि) जीवन को धन्य बनाने वाली रात्रि है।

जो सबका शिव करे, वही 'शिव'
 
शिवरात्रि का पर्व फाल्गुन कृष्ण चतुर्दशी को मनाया जाता है। ऐसा माना गया है कि सृष्टि के आरंभ में इसी दिन मध्य रात्रि में भोले शंकर का ब्रह्माजी से रुद्र के रूप में अवतार हुआ था।

पुराणों में कथा आती है कि जब समुद्र मंथन किया गया, तब अनेक प्रकार की वस्तुओं के बाद विष निकला। देवतागण उसे देखकर भयभीत हो गए। वे सोच में पड़ गए कि यदि यह विष संसार में फैल गया, तो समस्त प्राणी जगत नष्ट हो जाएगा। तब देवगण शिवजी के पास गए और प्रार्थना की कि वे उनकी सहायता करें और इस सर्वनाश से बचा लें। देवताओं की व्याकुल प्रार्थना से शिवजी द्रवित हो गए और हलाहल पी गए। विष के तीक्ष्ण प्रभाव से उनका कंठ नीला पड़ गया और तभी से वे नीलकंठ कहलाए।

शिवजी ने योग साधना के माध्यम से खुद को परिष्कृत किया। उन्हें सद्गुणों का भंडार कहा जाता है। यह भी कहा जाता है कि शक्ति उनके इशारे पर नाचती है। वे अपने तीसरे नेत्र से बड़ी से बड़ी शक्ति को भी भस्म करने की सार्मथ्य रखते हैं। ध्यान-समाधि में बाधा डालने का दुस्साहस करने वाले कामदेव को उन्होंने इसी नेत्र से भस्म किया था। वे इस नेत्र के जरिए संसार की गतिविधियों को देख लेते हैं। इस कथा का एक आशय यह है कि हमें अपनी शक्तियां बढ़ाकर व्यक्तिगत जीवन व समाज में अनैतिकता को दूर करने का प्रयत्न करना चाहिए।

महान आत्माएं अपने व अन्य प्राणियों में कोई अंतर नहीं मानतीं। वे दूसरों को अपने बराबर ही समझती हैं। उनके मन में छोटे-बड़े का कोई भेद नहीं होता। गीता में श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा है कि पंडित और ज्ञानी वह है, जो विद्या-विनय से युक्त ब्राह्माण, हाथी, गाय आदि को एक समान मानता है। आज लोग धन-वैभव, पद-प्रतिष्ठा आदि के मद में अपने से छोटों को दुत्कारते हैं। उनके साथ दुर्व्यवहार करते हैं। वे कभी यह नहीं सोचते कि इसी तरह का व्यवहार अगर उनके साथ किया जाए, तो उन्हें कैसा लगेगा। महादेव ने तो भूत-प्रेतों को भी अपना साथी बनाया, अर्थात क्षुद्र जनों को अपने गले से लगाया। उनके उत्थान के लिए सत्प्रयास किए।

शिव का जीवन-चरित्र हमें यह संदेश देता है कि अगर अपनी और दूसरों की सुख-शांति चाहते हो, तो अपरिग्रह, सादा जीवन तथा परमात्मा की समीपता को अपनाया जाए। ईश्वर के सामीप्य और परमार्थ में ही सच्चा सुख है। वस्तुत: जो सबका शुभ व कल्याण करता है, वही शिव है। उसी की संसार में पूजा होती है।

Thanks for your post reply earlier. As I was driving down suddenly it struck me. I was looking for a physical guru all these days to teach me the queries I had earlier. But suddenly it began clear. AS your said, just thinking Sai Sai will show me the way. that is what the Satcharitra says and yet I was wondering.  My humble pranams to you all.
