- 1 CRORE THEFT @ SAI BABA TEMPLE IN DEHRADUN -
27th Aug`2012

On 21st Aug`2012, a gang of thieves looted the Sai Baba Temple on Rajpur Road`Dehradun
and fled with jewellery worth 1 crore which included Baba's:
1 Silver Canopy,
2 Silver lions placed next to Baba's throne,
1 Gold necklace around Baba's neck and
Cash from Donation Boxes.

The temple pujaris were shocked when they entered the temple in the morning and saw that Baba
had been unseated from his throne. The back door was unlocked and the window glass had been removed
to open the lock from inside. The Police started their investigations with forensic samples taken from the temple.

The CCTV cameras were switched off every evening when the Temple closes after the aarti, a routine that has shocked everyone.
An old guard was the only form of security for the temple, which has cash and jewelry worth crores.

An unidentified man was caught inside the premises of the temple on the 12th Aug`2012.
After initial investigation the temple authorities let him go and did not inform the police of the incident.
In all probability he was an accomplice in the crime & had come to see the security arrangements in the temple at night.

An unfinished and unplastered staircase was found leading to the drains behind the temple.
It is believed that the thieves used the staircase on their way in and out.
No one knows who got the staircase constructed.

But finally the Police arrested two members of an interstate gang from New Delhi and recovered most of the stolen goods from them.
A total of 4 bags containing around 50 kgs of Silver articles & 1 Gold chain stolen from the Sai temple were recovered from them.
They were trying to dispose off their loot, when the police who were keeping a close eye on their movement caught them.
They were brought to Dehradun & the 2 Silver lions were recovered from an open plot behind the temple where they had been buried.
As the thieves did not have a big bag to carry the lions, they had been buried so they could be recovered later.

After the recovery police were showered with awards and gifts.
The Sai temple trust also declared an award of Rs.1 lakh for the cops who cracked the case within a week.

- THIEF SEEKS BABA'S BLESSINGS @ SHIRDI BEFORE & AFTER THEFT -
04th Feb`2013

People visiting Shirdi to pay obeisance to Sai Baba for fulfilling their wishes is common
but a Thief’s faith in Sai has left the Ahmedabad`Gujarat police surprised.
The 21-year-old thief would seek the Almighty’s blessings @ Shirdi before embarking on a stealing spree.

After executing the task successfully, he would again visit Shirdi to thank Him and sell off the stolen booty.
But he ran out of his luck when he was caught lifting a laptop bag in Shahibaug area.

Initially, he tried to rescue himself by showing his inability to comprehend the cops’ language.
But when the police did not let him go, he promptly started speaking Hindi.

His questioning brought out certain strange practices of the group.
They would first visit Shirdi to pay their obeisance.
Thereafter, they would come to Ahmedabad and randomly visit areas to lift bag. Laptop bags were their first choice.
As the gang was aware that hotel stay would require ID proofs, they used to leave the city the same day.

The gang would immediately take Shirdi-bound bus after thefts, leaving no trace behind to trail them.
Posing as tourists, the group would sell stolen laptops for Rs 10,000- Rs 12,000 in Shirdi.
If people questioned them, they would win their trust by citing some financial emergency.

  • BEWARE OF PICKPOCKETS @ PILGRIMAGES.

    1) Carry bare Minimum Cash / Valuables with you.
    2) Keep Copies of Passport / Visa & other Important Documents with you.
    3) Make use of Safe Deposit Lockers, if available @ the Hotel.
    4) Keep an eye on your belonging's when surrounded by Crowds.

On 13th Sep`2013, a man was relieved of Rs 1.30 lakh near Shirdi's Sai Baba temple.
The incident took place when an Aurangabad-based devotee,
parked his car outside the Sai Baba Temple premises
and went inside the Shrine for Baba's darshan leaving his bag, containing the cash, mobile phone
and a Revolver with some Live rounds, inside his car with his driver.

Now, the modus-operandi followed by, for thefts of belongings inside a car while someone is still inside it,
is that the thieves come and make the driver unlock his door by any making any excuses.
Either they tell him that he has dropped some money outside or a Tyre of his car is punctured
or some problem at the back of his car & as soon as, the Driver unlocks his door,
the rest of the car doors get automatically unlocked due to the electronic central locking in cars nowadays.
And, then others involved, swiftly from the other side whisk away the belongings kept in the car and run away.

So, in this case too, according to the driver, some persons approached him,
and told him that he had dropped a Rs.10 note on the road.
As soon as the driver stepped out to look for it, they picked up the bag from the car and fled from the scene.
Later, the bag was found abandoned with the revolver and rounds inside, but without the cash and mobile.

On 14th March`2013, a South African woman and her daughter who had come to Shirdi for Baba's darshan,
were robbed off cash (Indian as well as South African currency) worth Rs 1.25 lakh.
On Thursday, after attending Baba's Shej Arati, they came out of the Temple's Gate No.2,
and were doing some shopping when a group of children surrounded them.
Later, they found that all their cash/passports/credit cards etc were missing from her purse.

They lodged a complaint at the Shirdi Police Station
who managed to catch a group involved in such pickpockets & recover all her Cash/Passports etc.

In this group of 8, 4 were majors while the rest 4 were just minors.
Their modus-operandi was that they come in a small group and surround a devotee.
The one in the front distracts the devotee by engaging him/her in some product display,
while the rest from behind sneak away the belongings from the devotees purse/pocket etc.

  • ROBBERY OF BABA'S SILVER PADUKAS @ SAI TEMPLE`MUMBAI
    - CAUGHT ON CCTV -

On 06th Oct`2013 there was a robbery @ Shirdi Saibaba Mandir,
    C/o.Sri Sai Bala Mitra Mandal,
    Sai Nagar,
    Telli Galli,
    Andheri East,
    Mumbai,
    Maharashtra, India.

A couple walked in the Temple with their 4 year old son and stole Sai Baba's Silver Padukas (Footwear)
which was placed on the donation box right infront of Baba's Idol.
Unaware that their entire robbery was being captured by the CCTV Cameras installed @ the Temple,
the man looked here & there to see if anyone was looking at them. When he saw no one around,
first he took some prasad kept next to Baba's Padukas and gave it to his son.

Then the female casually picked up Baba's Silver Padukas to check how heavy they were.
Then she looked behind to see if she was being watched & on seeing no one around,
she quickly placed her handkerchief on the Padukas, picked it up and hid it in her purse
and then they all left the temple. An FIR was registered @ the Andheri Police Station.

The Sai Temple authorities then posted the couple's photos, taken from the CCTV Cameras, all over Mumbai,
right from Churchgate to Virar, asking people to help identify them. Soon enough, they were identified & caught.
However the Silver Padukas were not recovered from them as they had already sold it to someone.
