The bhakti path

The bhakti path winds in a delicate way.
On this path there is no asking and no not asking.
The ego simply disappears the moment you touch
him.
The joy of looking for him is so immense that you
just dive in,
and coast around like a fish in the water.
If anyone needs a head, the lover leaps up to offer
his.

I say:
"Deserve before you desire"
Answer is in chapter 21
"Three of the party were full of avarice, but the chief lady or mistress was of a very different nature. She had a regard and love for Baba. Once it so happened, that when the noon-day Arati was going on, Baba was much pleased with her faith and devotion, and was pleased to give her darshan of her Ishtam (Beloved Deity). To her Baba appeared as Sitanath (Rama) while to all the others the usual Sainath. On seeing her beloved Deity, she was very much moved. Tears began to flow from her eyes and she clapped her hands in joy. The people began to wonder at her joyful mood; but were not able to guess its cause. Late in the afternoon she disclosed everything to her husband. She told him how she saw Shri Rama in Sai Baba. He thought that she was very simple and devout, and her seeing Rama might be a hallucination of her mind. He poohpoohed her, saying that it was not possible, that she alone should see Rama while they all saw Sai Baba. She did not resent this remark, as she was fortunate enough to get Ramadarshan now and then, when her mind was calm and composed and free from avarice."

-Like a loving mother forcing bitter but wholesome medicines down the throats of her children for the sake of their health, Sai Baba imparted spiritual instructions to His devotees. His method was not veiled or secret, but quite open. The devotees who followed His instructions got their object. Sad-gurus like Sai Baba open our (eyes of the) intellect and show us the divine beauties of the Self, and fulfill our tender longings of devotion. When this is done, our desire for sense-objects vanishes, twin fruits of Viveka (discrimination) and Vairagya (dispassion or non-attachment) come to our hands; and knowledge sprouts up even in the sleep. All this we get, when we come in contact with Saints (Sad-guru), serve them and secure their love. The Lord, who fulfills the desires of His devotees, comes to our aid, removes our troubles and sufferings, and makes us happy. This progress or development is entirely due to the help of the Sadguru, who is regarded as the Lord Himself. Therefore, we should always be after the Sad-guru, hear His stories, fall at His Feet and serve Him. Now we come to our main story.

"Baba asked her in low and fascinating tone to chant 'Rajarama, Rajarama' then and always, and said - "If you do this, your life's object will be gained, your mind will attain peace and you will be immensely benefited." To persons unfamiliar with spiritual matters, this might appear as affair, but really it was not so. It was a case of, what in technically called, 'Shakti-pat', i.e. transference of power from the Guru to the disciple. How forcible and effective were Baba's words! In an instant, they pierced her heart and found lodgement there.
This case illustrates the nature of the relations that should subsist between the Guru and the disciple. Both should love and serve each other as One. There is no distinction nor any difference between them. Both are One, and one cannot live without the other. The disciple placing his head on the Guru's feet is a gross or outward vision; really and internally they are both one and the same. Those who see any difference between them are yet unripe and not perfect."

Quote
It was the firm conviction of Baba that Knowledge or Self-realization is not possible, unless there is the prior act of grinding of all our impulses, desires, sins; and of the three gunas, viz. Sattva, Raja and Tama; and the Ahamkara, which is so subtle and therefore so difficult to be got rid of.

Code: [Select]
In the beginning, of chapter 32 , Sri sai satcharitra  , Hemadpant describes the samsara (visible world) by the allegory of Ashvattha (Banyan) tree which has, in the phraseology of the Geeta, roots above and branches below. Its branches are spread downwards and upwards and are nourished by the gunas (qualities), and its sprouts are the objects of the senses. Its roots, leading to actions, are extended downwards to this world of men. Its form cannot be known in this world, nor its end, its beginning nor its support. Cutting this Ashvattha tree of strong roots with the sharp weapon of non-attachment, one should seek the path beyond, treading which there is no return.
For traversing this path, the help of a good guide (Guru) is absolutely necessary. However learned a man may be, or however deep his study of Vedas and Vedangas (sacred literature) may be, he cannot go to his destination safely. If the guide be there to help him and show him the right way, he would avoid the pitfalls and the wild beasts on the journey, and everything will be smooth-sailing.

Even if the Vedas, Shrutis, Shastras and like scriptures are studied, there is no acquisition of knowledge without the Guru’s grace. It is just a physical and mental exhaustion. This tree of mundane existence, of an immense expanse, which was not visible earlier but which is experienced later, is full of miseries on account of birth and death. It is illusory and perishable. This mundane existence is called a tree because like a tree it can be cut to pieces and hence is perishable. This existence which is not perceptible initially, because at one point of time it remained steady, is, therefore, compared to a tree. This is that tree of mundane existence which is seen but the nature of which is not known. It has its roots above with endless expanse of branches. Very little of this tree comes within the purview of a human being. From moment to moment, it spreads as more branches sprout. Sometimes from a distance they look beautiful, but one finds them prickly all over, if embraced. Like the trunk of a plantain tree, this is devoid of essence (or pith). Like a mirage or like the city of Gandharvas, this tree appears very attractive with the surrounding area round the roots clinging on account of the water, in the form of desires. This tree, although non-existent in character, originates from actions and desires rooted in nescience; and has its own character undergoing a change every moment.
This tree is of the nature of calamity; has its origin in ignorance. Surrounding this tree is a store of water in the form of desires and lust. This tree is one that has its expanse in the belongings or possessions viz. money, food, son and wife. This tree has as its support the idea of oneness with the body. In fact, this idea is always at the root of this tree. The trunk of this tree, in reality, is the endless beings with gender differences. The many offshoots in the form of branches are formed by actions and sublime impressions. On account of these, this tree continues to grow. This tree is one which is full of leaves in the form of Shrutis etc. It throbs with sprouts in the form of primary sensations. It assumes glory in the form of flowers which are actions, including rituals and charity.  It is full of the juices of the pairs of opposites. There is no end to the fruits of this tree. On it, indeed depend all beings as well as the worlds like “Bhur and Bhuva” for their existence, as they cannot remain separate from the tree. This is like the ancient Ashwatha tree which has always a dejected face. At times it is dancing, at times singing and at other times playing instruments. Sometimes it is full of sport, laughter and at times, it weeps. The appearance of this tree is really within Brahman. This can be cut by the sword of detachment. This is that tree which has for its support pure roots. Understand this to be of the nature of effulgence. That Brahman is Truth and is the support for everything. This world is of an illusory nature like a dream. Surely neither has this tree a beginning nor an end. How can it exist only in the middle? It is for this purpose that those who are detached, toil. The holy are ever attached to it. This is the goal of those who seek liberation and is the coveted end for all aspirants. Try to stay at the place which you like. Do aspire to take refuge at the feet of Saints. Listen with attention to all that they say and take care to do away with doubts from their very roots. Controlling the mind utterly, root out the intellect. Try to become totally detached and continue to gaze at the feet of the Guru. Eradicate completely all fake beliefs, which otherwise will create impediments on the way. Trample under your feet all conceit. Then only will you be able to reach the other shore.

Ramanuja's Commentary
In the previous chapter the Supreme Lord Krishna expounded upon: 1) The jiva or embodied beings relationship with matter in both its subtle and physical forms due to attraction to sense objects and subsequent attachment and the karma or reactions to one's own actions thereof along with the karma from the types of food one has eaten determines the physical body one receives in the next life. 2) The manner in detail how the association with the three gunas or modes of material nature keeps a jiva enslaved in material existence is given in verses 6 to 25. 3) The method by which a jiva is able to overcome and transcend the three gunas and assume one's actual spiritual position of atma tattva or soul realisation by bhakti yoga or exclusive loving devotion unto the Supreme Lord.
Now in this chapter the most worshippable and resplendent Lord Krishna reveals His absolute dominion and sovereign glory over all creation and everything that is in it. Creation is constituted by kshara or transient souls in bondage and aksara or eternally liberated souls. Both kshara and akshara constitute His spiritual form which constitutes the cosmic manifestation but He is inconceivably distinctly different from both. The Supreme Lord being the Supreme creator and controller of all, the source of all glorious attributes and wonderful qualities is a fountain of righteousness and the antithesis of all that is evil and demoniac. For the elucidation of this eternal truth the Supreme Lord cites the Asvattha or banyan tree as a metaphor to symbolise the material manifestation as a place of bondage and enslavement for the atmas or immortal souls trapped as a jiva in samsara or the perpetual cycle of birth and death. How kshara souls may escape from samsara and become the akshara souls is His glorious plan of evolution and it is enacted by the sword of knowledge which destroys the tree of materialism by the weapon of non-attachment.
The state of samsara is symbolised by the asvattha or banyan tree which in real ilfe has its roots growing upwards and its branches growing downwards. The indestructible nature of samsara is symbolised in the second division of the Katha Upanisad III.I beginning urdhva mulo avak shakha which means: With roots upwards and branches downwards this primeval tree is everlasting. With roots upwards refers to our Brahma with four faces, the secondary creator who is situated above the seven worlds of Bhur, Bhuvah, Svah, Mahah, etc.. The branches downwards refer to all the denziens of creation in the form of humans, animals, birds, fish, plants, insects, etc. The indestructible nature of this tree is due to its being avyayan or everlasting like a river with no end and because as a tree it is impossible to uproot until one is weaned from sense gratification and material desires by the mercy of the Supreme Lords devotee and atma tattva is achieved by His His grace. The word chandamsi refers to the injunctions and prohibitions of the Vedic scriptures which are symbolised by the leaves which flourish or dwindle in proportion to the karma or reactions to the actions one accrues by adhering to or ignoring such provisions. Leaves are very instrumental in preserving the longevity of trees. Whoever is knowledgeable of this tree as just explained comprehends the Vedic scriptures as the knowledge of non-attachment is the ways and means of uprooting this tree and allows one to achieve atma tattva.

My take on this shloka

Acquire this transcendental knowledge from a Self-realized master by humble reverence, by sincere inquiry, and by service. The empowered ones, who have realized the Truth, will teach you. (4.34)
35
After knowing the transcendental science, O Arjuna, you shall not again become deluded like this. With this knowledge you shall see the entire creation within your own higher Self, and thus within Me. (See also 6.29, 6.30, 11.07, 11.13) (4.35)
Even if one is the most sinful of all sinners, one shall yet cross over the ocean of sin by the raft of Self-knowledge alone.

Sridhara Swami's Commentary
The means to acquire atma tattva or soul realisation is being stated here: How is this knowledge to be acquired? Lord Krishna reveals it is by inquiry. Inquire from a self-realised being by falling submissively at his feet just like a stick before him. Questions should be asked like. What is the goal of human existence and how is it possible to attain it? One should render humble and sincere service to this self-realised being because this person has realised the ultimate truth, fully steeped in the knowledge of the Vedic scriptures, of the Brahman or the spiritual substratum pervading all existence and the intuitive potency which manifests along with it. Such a person will magnanimously instruct one in attaining the ultimate truth.

Kumara Vaisnava Sampradaya:

Nimbaditya
Kesava Kasmiri's Commentary
As to the answer to the question by what means is this spiritual knowledge available Lord Krishna is revealing how to attain this knowledge which is altogether different from actions that bestow material rewards. He instructs everyone to fall at the feet of a self-realised beings rendering service to them with faith and devotion and inquire from them with a pure heart about the purpose of life, the true nature of a living being and how to revive one's relationship with the Supreme Being? By these questions and by being pleased by one's sincere service such a self-realised being will guide and instruct one on matters related to the ultimate truth because they have direct experience and wisdom of this and thus will remove all doubts about: Who am I? Why was I born? What is my purpose in life? The self-realised being will dispel all these questions by proper reasoning and evidences from the Vedic scriptures and practical experience and reveal the nature of the individual consciousness and its relationship with the ultimate consciousness which is the goal of all existence. All actions culminate in knowledge when instructed by a self-realised being but never when instructed by those who are not self-realised. By this verse the ancient scriptural adage of : Let one humbly seek a spiritual master who is well learned in the Vedic scriptures and established in the knowledge of the Brahman or the spiritual substratum pervading all existence. The plural sense of the words jnaninah meaning those expert in the Vedic scriptures and darsinah meaning those who realised the ultimate truth denotes that all self realised being will possess this spiritual knowledge. It also infers that if one approaches a person for enquiry and discovers that this person is not self-realised and cannot give this spiritual knowledge then one may approach a spiritual master who is self-realised to attain this knowledge.

My take on this shlok

Speaking in today's context,

The
devotee says: "I want to please the Guru." The disciple says "I want
to become the reflection of the Guru.".

In 1917, Baba once called Abdul Baba, Nana Chandorkar, Mhalsapathi, Das Ganu and others and started asking each of them: “Do you know who you are?” Each of them replied: “I am your sishya (disciple).” Baba said: “Nonsense! Don’t use that term any longer. I have no disciples in this world. I have countless devotees. You do not recognise the distinction between a disciple and a devotee. Anyone can be a devotee. But that is not the case with the disciple. A disciple is one who carries out implicitly the commands of the guru (the preceptor). The mark of the sishya is total devotion to the preceptor. Only the man who says, ‘I have none in the world other than the preceptor,’ is a disciple. How far have you respected My injunctions? How are you entitled to claim that you are My disciples? Only the one who follows Me like My shadow can claim to be My disciple. The devotee is one who prays to the Lord wherever he may be. Hence, there is a big difference between a disciple and a devotee. The disciple and the preceptor are like two bodies with one spirit. The disciple should have no sense of separateness from the preceptor. He should feel, ‘I and you are one.’ There are no such disciples to be found in the world. There are millions of devotees, but no disciples.”

So we can't generalise anything in bhakti marg, such as way of progress in bhakti, or to get darshan of bhagwan, to attain ज्ञान , विवेक etc.So i think we should stop stereotyping bhagwan untill we know any little about him...
Well! Coming back to the pt.

Talking about the exceptions today

Those who are into BHAGWAT DHARM Are the exceptions..

(Chapter 32 in hindi sai satcharitra
Chapter 15 in geeta)
Gyaneshwar maharaj dwara is shlok par tika :

With roots above and branches below, the Asvattha tree, they say, is indestructible, it’s leaves are
the Vedic hymns; he, who knows it, is the knower of the Vedas.
O Arjuna, that which obstructs the way leading to the abode of the Supreme Self is not this
panorama of the world, but this great tree of mundane existence. But it is not like other trees,
which has roots below and branches above. It is because of this, that no one can fathom it.
Even if its base is burnt or cut with an axe, it does not get destroyed; instead it shoots up
rapidly. If the other trees are cut at the base, they become uprooted along with their branches.
It is not so with this tree, which is not an ordinary tree (46-50). Curiously this is an extraor-
dinary tree which has its growth downwards. No one knows the height of the sun, but its
rays spread downwards. In the same way this tree of mundane existence, grows downwards
in a curious manner. Whatever things exist in this world, are pervaded by this tree. Just as
the entire sky is pervaded by water at the time of deluge, or the night is flooded with darkness
at sunset, so this entire universe is pervaded by this tree. This tree has neither any fruit, which
can be tasted, nor any flower, which can be smelled; what exists is the lone tree (51-55). Its
roots grow up at the top, and so it cannot be uprooted. For this reason it is evergreen. Though
it is said to have roots at the top, it has also numerous roots downwards. This tree has shot
up rapidly all around like the holy Indian fig tree, and its shoots have also put forth branches.
So, O Arjuna, it is not that this tree has branches only downwards, but its numerous branches
have spread upwards also (56-60). It looks as though the sky has put forth foliage or the wind
has taken the form of this tree or the three states of creation, sustenance and dissolution have
become incarnate in the form of this tree. In this way this top-rooted tree has grown thick
in the form of the universe. Now you may ask, who is at the top of this tree, what is its origin,
what are its characteristics, why this tree spreads downwards, what are its branches, what
are the branches of its downward roots and how do they grow, why it is called Asvattha and
what purport has been found in all this, by the knowers of Self (61-65). All these queries
I shall explain in such a way, that you will realise them fully. Oh lucky Arjuna, you alone
are fit to enquire into all this, so gather all your sense organs in the ears and hear. Hearing
these words of the Yadava hero brimful with affection, Arjuna became all attention. As if all
the ten quarters wanted to embrace the sky, the longing to hear the Lord’s words grew in
him to such an extent, that he felt the Lord’s discourse to be too short. Just as the sage Agastya
had sipped the ocean, Arjuna wanted to sip the words of the Lord in a single draught
(66-70). The Lord became very happy to see this limitless longing of Arjuna to hear him and
waved his satisfaction over him.
Then the Lord said to Arjuna: O winner of wealth, this tree has become top-rooted because
of Brahman, which is at the top. Really speaking, there is no such thing as the middle, top
or bottom in the case of Brahman, which is non-dual and one. It is the inarticulate sound,
which precedes all sounds, the fragrance that is the origin of all scents, and the bliss expe-
rienced without sexual intercourse. It is here and beyond, in front and behind, it sees ev-
erything but is itself invisible (71-75). When it comes into contact with the limiting conditions,
it becomes the universe with name and form. It is knowledge without a knower and the object
of knowledge and it has pervaded the universe in a subtle form. It is neither the effect nor
the cause; it is neither dual nor single, it exists in full consciousness of itself. This pure Brahman
is the top root of this tree and the shoots, which come forth from this root, are as follows.
This universe is well known as Maya, which has no existence like the progeny of a barren
woman (76-80). One cannot say that it is, or that it is not. Though not susceptible to reason,
it is said to be without beginning. It is the chest full of diverse powers. It is the support of
the world, as the sky is the support of the clouds and it is the folded cloth in the form of
universe. It is the seed of the world tree, the source of mundane existence, and it contains
within it in a massive form, the dim light of false knowledge. This Maya takes shelter in the
Supreme Brahman and becomes manifest through its power. She is like a sleepy person who
feels dull or like the dim light of a lamp covered with soot (81-85) or like a young woman
who, dreaming that she is asleep beside her husband, wakes him up with an embrace (in
a dream) and rouses his passion. So, O winner of wealth, this Maya that is the creature of
Brahman, makes it forget its pristine nature, and this is the origin of the world-tree. This
forgetfulness of its essential nature, on the part of Brahman is the original top-root of this
tree and is well known in Vedanta by the term, seed-form (Bija-bhava). The sound slumber
in the form of deep ignorance, is called the seedling form (Bij-ankura-bhava) and from this
arise the states of waking and sleep, which are known as the fruit-form (Phalabhava) of deep
slumber. These are the terms used in the discourses on Vedanta. But this apart, ignorance
is the root-cause of this world-tree (86-90).
This spotless Self at the top gives out roots up and down. And they grow strong in the cavity
at the base of the tree in the form of Maya. Then in the middle of those roots four kinds
of sprouts shoot downwards. In this way, the root of the world-tree gains its strength from
the Supreme Self and bears tufts of sprouts downwards. This conscious Self first produces a tender leaf, known as the Great Principle (mahat). Then is produced downward what is
known as egoism, with three leaves in the form of the three qualities, sattva, rajas and tamas
(91-95). This egoism produces a second sprout in the form of intellect, which fosters the notion
of distinctions. Then this gives moisture to the twig, in the form of mind and makes it fresh.
When the root becomes strong, it gives rise to four tender shoots of the mind, full of the
juice of ignorance. Then from them straight twigs, in the form of five gross elements sky,
wind, fire, water and earth, issue with great rapidity.
From the twigs in the form of gross elements, arise fresh and tender variegated foliage in
the form of the sense organs, such as ears and their objects. When the sprout in the form
of sound grows, the organs of hearing grow in strength, giving rise to the sprouts of desire
(96-100). Then the creeper in the form of the body, produces foliage in the form of skin, from
which springs the sprout of touch, giving rise to novel kinds of passions in profusion. Then
is produced the foliage of form, with sprouts in the form of eyes to view with, giving rise
to infatuation. This is followed by foliage in the form of taste, giving rise to numerous desires
for the tongue. Similarly, there comes a sprout of smell, intensifying the desires of the organ
of smell and giving rise to fondness. In this way, the eightfold Prakriti consisting of mahat,
egoism, intellect, mind and the five gross elements makes this world-tree to shoot up rapidly
(101-105). But just as when the mother-of-pearl appears as silver, the silver takes on the same
form as the mother-of-pearl, or the expanse of the waves is proportionate to the wide surface
of the sea, so the Brahman itself becomes the tree in the form of mundane existence arising
from ignorance. Just as a person, though single, becomes his retinue in the dream, so this
entire universe is the growth and expanse of the Supreme Self. In this way, this curious tree
grows and produces shoots in the form of mahat and other principles.
I shall now tell you, why people call this tree Ashvattha (106-110). Ashva means the morrow,
this tree does not remain the same even until the morrow. Just as the hues of the cloud change
every moment or the lightning does not last in its entirety even for a short while, or the water
on a quivering lotus leaf or the mind of man in distress does not remain steady, so is the
condition of this world-tree which perishes every moment. In popular parlance, the people
call this the holy fig tree, but Shri Hari does not use this word in this sense (111-115). However,
I had understood the true meaning, when this tree was called the Ashvattha. Now we need
not be concerned with the popular sense of this word and so I proceed with this narration.
In short, this tree is called Ashvattha, as it is transient. But this tree is also known as inde-
structible i.e. everlasting, its implied meaning is this. The sea evaporates to form the clouds
and is replenished by the rivers, flooded by the showers of rain and so remains full, so long
as the above process continues (116-120). In the same way, the modifications in the tree take
place so rapidly, that people hardly perceive them. It is for this reason the people call it
indestructible. Just as a munificent person gathers merit by giving his money to charity, so
this world tree, undergoing decay every moment, still remains everlasting. Just as when the
chariot moves very fast, its wheels seem to have no movement, so no sooner a branch of
the world tree in the form of creatures withers up, in course of time, than it is replaced by
numerous fresh sprouts. But no one knows when the branch drops down and when the
numerous branches shoot up; in the same way, as one does not know which clouds in the
month of July come in the sky and which disappear (121-125). The branches of the world-tree fall off at the time of world-dissolution but they grow in abundance, like a thick forest
at the time of creation. The barks of the tree get peeled off by the stormy winds at the time
of world- dissolution, but they appear in tufts at the beginning of an epoch. Then one epoch
(Manvantara) follows another, the solar and lunar dynasties expand in the same way as the
sugarcane grows through its joints. At the end of the kali-yuga, all the barks which the world-
tree had grown in the four yugas drop down, but it grows one and half times at the com-
mencement of the krita-yuga. Just as the current year ends and ushers in a new year, and
one does not know when a day passes away, giving place to a new one (126-130), or one
does not perceive the joints of breezes when they flow continuously, so one does not know
how many branches grow on this tree and fall off. No sooner than a young shoot in the form
of a body falls off, than hundreds of such shoots grow on this tree. As a result, the world
tree appears to be everlasting. As the water of the river current flows away very fast, it is
followed by another, so that the river appears to have a continuous flow, so this universe,
though impermanent, appears to be permanent. Numerous ripples appear and disappear in
the sea in a twinkling of the eye, and so they appear to be permanent. The crow with only
one common eye-ball, moves it from one eye to the other so fast, that it gives an erroneous
impression that it has two eyes (131-135). When the top rotates very fast, its rapid motion
gives the false impression that it is stationary and stuck to the ground. Why go far, if the
firebrand is moved very fast round and round in darkness, it appears circular in shape. In
the same way, the decomposition and growth of this world-tree takes place so fast, simul-
taneously, that the ordinary people do not perceive it and call it everlasting. But he, who realises,
that this world-tree is momentary, that it grows and withers continuously in a moment and
is false being rooted in ignorance (136-140), such a man, O Arjuna, is all knowing, the knower
of Vedanta doctrine and is the object of my adoration. He alone, attains the fruit of Yoga and
enlivens knowledge. Enough of this description. In this way, who can describe a person who
knows that this world-tree is transitory?
