  • The Bhagavad Gita declares "Sarvatah Paani Paadam Tat Sarvathokshi Shiromukham, Sarvatah Shruthimalloke Sarvamavruthya Thishthati" (God is omnipresent with His hands, feet, eyes, heads, mouths and ears pervading everywhere, He permeates the entire universe). Nothing escapes His attention. Therefore, we should always keep our minds filled with good thoughts as God is constantly pronouncing the blessing of fulfilment saying 'Tathaasthu' (so be it!). When you are subject to misery you blame God, but do not realise that your distress is the consequence of your own thoughts. This is why you should always have good thoughts and seek good company.

  • Several fuels like petroleum, coal, etc. are extracted from deep within the earth. Wherefrom did they arise in the first place? Over a long period of time, they have accumulated deep inside. Now they are making their appearance outside. In the same way, evil tendencies like desire, anger, hatred, etc., are accumulated in you, hidden in you. Sometime or the other, they are bound to come out. So, take care that they do not even make their entry into you. You should discriminate and ensure that only good qualities enter you. This is the true human value. The very attempt to control or restrain your anger is a sign of weakness. In fact, you have to cultivate your nature in such a manner that the very feeling of anger does not enter you.

  • You have to develop human values. Without this, you are human merely in form. Man is filled with qualities such as anger, desire, greed, jealousy, etc. These are animal qualities. Anger is the nature of a dog. Wavering mind is the quality of a monkey. You are neither a dog nor a monkey. When you are in a fit of anger, remind yourself that you are not a dog and your anger will diminish. Many animal qualities are rampant in human beings today. What we need to cultivate are the human qualities of compassion, truth, forbearance, empathy, etc.

  • The rope is mistaken to be a snake and the perceiver flees in fear. This tells us that the eye is but a window through which the soul sees the external world. The soul is the motive force of all the senses. Of what use is the eye, when you do not possess 'Samadrishti'. 'Sama' means Brahman, the Absolute Reality; 'Samadrishti' means seeing only Brahman, the One, in all things at all times. This Ekathwam (Oneness) is the fundamental truth. All other experiences are false. Dwell on that in your meditation. Fix it in your inner consciousness. That is the path of Liberation.

  • JAI SAI ,
    BABA SAYS.
A Collection from Sri Sai Satcharita

Why fear when I am here?

    I am formless and everywhere

I am in everything and beyond. I fill all space.

All that you see taken together is Myself.

I do not shake or move.

If one devotes their entire time to me and rests in me, need fear nothing for body and soul.

If one sees me and me alone and listens to my Leelas and is devoted to me alone, they will reach God.

My business is to give blessings.

I get angry with none. Will a mother get angry with her children? Will the ocean send back the waters to the several rivers?

I will take you to the end.

    Surrender completely to God.

If you make me the sole object of your thoughts and aims, you will gain the supreme goal.

Trust in the Guru fully. That is the only sadhana.

I am the slave of my devotee.

Stay by me and keep quiet. I will do the rest.

What is our duty? To behave properly. That is enough.

My eye is ever on those who love me.

Whatever you do, wherever you may be, always bear this in mind: I am always aware of everything you do.

I will not allow my devotees to come to harm.

If a devotee is about to fall, I stretch out my hands to support him or her.

I think of my people day and night. I say their names over and over.

My treasury is open but no one brings carts to take from it. I say, “Dig!” but no one bothers.

My people do not come to me of their own accord; it is I who seek and bring them to me.

All that is seen is my form: ant, fly, prince, and pauper

However distant my people may be, I draw them to me just as we pull a bird to us with a string tied to its foot.

    I love devotion.

This body is just my house. My guru has long ago taken me away from it.

Those who think that Baba is only in Shirdi have totally failed to know me.

Without my grace, not even a leaf can move.

I look on all with an equal eye.

I cannot do anything without God’s permission.

God has agents everywhere and their powers are vast.

I have to take care of my children day and night and give an account to God of every paisa.
The wise are cheerful and content with their lot in life.

If you are wealthy, be humble. Plants bend when they bear fruit.

Spend money in charity; be generous and munificent but not extravagant.

Get on with your worldly activities cheerfully, but do not forget God.

Do not kick against the pricks of life.

Whatever creature comes to you, human or otherwise, treat it with consideration.

Do not be obsessed by the importance of wealth.

See the divine in the human being.

Do not bark at people and don’t be aggressive, but put up with others’ complaints.

There is a wall of separation between oneself and others and between you and me. Destroy this wall!

Give food to the hungry, water to the thirsty, and clothes to the naked. Then God will be pleased.

Saburi (patience) ferries you across to the distant goal.

The four sadhanas and the six Sastras are not necessary. Just has complete trust in your guru: it is enough.

Meditate on me either with form or without form, that is pure bliss.

God is not so far away. He is not in the heavens above, nor in hell below. He is always near you.

If anyone gets angry with another, they wound me to the quick.

If you cannot endure abuse from another, just say a simple word or two, or else leave.

What do we lose by another’s good fortune? Let us celebrate with them, or strive to emulate them.

That should be our desire and determination.

I stay by the side of whoever repeats my name.

If formless meditation is difficult, then think of my form just as you see it here. With such meditation, the difference between subject and object is lost and the mind dissolves in unity.

If anyone offends you do not return tit for tat.

I am the slave of those who hunger and thirst after me and treat everything else as unimportant.

Whoever makes me the sole object of their love, merges in me like a river in the ocean.

Look to me and I will look to you.

What God gives is never exhausted, what man gives never lasts.

Be contented and cheerful with what comes.

My devotees see everything as their Guru.

Poverty is the highest of riches and a thousand times superior to a king’s wealth.

Put full faith in God’s providence.

Whoever withdraws their heart from wife, child, and parents and loves me, is my real lover.

Distinguish right from wrong and be honest, upright and virtuous.

Do not be obsessed by egotism, imagining that you are the cause of action: everything is due to God.

If we see all actions as God’s doing, we will be unattached and free from karmic bondage.

Other people’s acts will affect just them. It is only your own deeds that will affect you.

Do not be idle: work, utter God’s name and read the scriptures.

If you avoid rivalry and dispute, God will protect you.

People abuse their own friends and family, but it is only after performing many meritorious acts that one gets a human birth. Why then come to Shirdi and slander people?

Speak the truth and truth alone.

No one wants to take from me what I give abundantly.

Do not fight with anyone, nor retaliate, nor slander anyone.

Harsh words cannot pierce your body. If anybody speaks ill of you, just continue on unperturbed.

Choose friends who will stick to you till the end, through thick and thin.

Meditate on what you read and think of God.

I give my devotees whatever they ask, until they ask for what I want to give.

You should not stay for even one second at a place where people are speaking disrespectfully of a saint.

If you do not want to part with what you have, do not lie and claim that you have nothing, but decline politely saying that circumstances or your own desires prevent you.

    Let us be humble.

Satsang that is associating with the good is good. Dussaya, or associating with evil-minded people, is evil and must be avoided.

What you sow, you reap. What you give, you get.

Recognize the existence of the Moral Law as governing results. Then unswervingly follow this Law.

All gods are one. There is no difference between a Hindu and a Muslim. Mosque and temple are the same.

Fulfill any promises you have made.

Death and life are the manifestations of God’s activity. You cannot separate the two. God permeates all.

Mukti is impossible for those addicted to lust.

Gain and loss, birth and death are in the hands of God.

When you see with your inner eye. Then you realize that you are God and not different from Him.

    Avoid unnecessary disputationò

The giver gives, but really he is sowing the seed for later: the gift of a rich harvest.

Wealth is really a means to work out dharma. If one uses it merely for personal enjoyment, it is vainly spent.

To God be the praise. I am only the slave of God.

God will show His love. He is kind to all.

Whenever you undertake to do something, do it thoroughly or not at all.

One’s sin will not cease till one falls at the feet of Sadhusò

Be ashamed of your hatred. Give up hatred and be quiet.

The Moral Law is inexorable, so follow it, observe it, and you will reach your goal: God is the perfection of the Moral Law.

    I am your servants’ servant.

Always think of God and you will see what He does.

Have faith and patience. Then I will be always with you wherever you are.

  • Men are born with a helpless lamenting cry; they should depart from the world with a smile of joy. That is the purpose of the years of life in between. But those years are wasted now. God, who is the anchor that saves man from the tempests of grief and despair, is neglected and ignored. Man is tossed about from one want to another, one grief to another, until he is blinded by despair and exhausted by foiled pursuits. Most illnesses are due to this despair and this exhaustion.

  • The human being is referred to as 'Nara'. 'Ra' means that which is perishable. 'Na' means not. 'Nara' refers therefore to that which is imperishable in man, the Atma (Spirit). Consequently, sorrow should be alien to him. He should shed no tear. Deem yourself as Divine. Live with this firm conviction. The divinity in every being should be revered. You have to recognise unity in diversity. Do not give room to any bad thoughts. The body is a temple of the Divine and no evil thoughts should be harboured within it.

  • Man is the repository of divine energy. Durga (Goddess of energy), Lakshmi (Goddess of wealth) and Saraswati (Goddess of wisdom) are present in him. Human life is highly sacred. Man has all the capacity to experience divine bliss. Man considers himself to be a weakling because he has forgotten the principle of the Self. His evil qualities, wicked deeds and misconduct have brought him down to this sorry state. This is the effect of evil company. As is the company, so are the thoughts. Hence, it is said, "Tell me your company, I shall tell you what you are." Your friendship influences your nature. Evil propensities are impediments in the spiritual path. Hence, man should distance himself from all evil actions and undertake good deeds. Only then will he have the right to call himself a human being.

  • Lord Krishna has said in the Bhagavad Gita, "Mamaivamso Jeevaloke Jeevabhuta Sanathanah" (all beings are an eternal part of My Self). God is present in the heart of one and all. It is because of Bhrama (delusion) that man is unable to realise his divine nature. In the first instance, man should make efforts to overcome this delusion and realise that God is always with him, in him, around him, above him and below him. There cannot be any defects or imperfections in such a divine principle. Whatever defects you think you see are purely the result of your imagination.

  • The illustrious Sri Shirdi Sai Baba was the first of the three-faceted Kalki-Avataars of the Kali Yuga. The Avatars are born to reverse the destructive effect of the Kali Yuga and lead it into the light and peaceful Sathya Yuga. The primary purpose of the birth of the powerful tripple incarnations are to protect the earth and avoid a total destruction of the world from man's illeffect on nature. All three Poorna Avataars originate from one source moving from body-to-body and are born as 1. Shirdi Sai Baba, 2. Sathya Sai Baba and the future, 3. Prema Sai Baba.

It took sages and rishis hundreds of years of continuous prayers and penance to attract and pull the powers of the Kalki Avataar to take birth in this age. The birth of the Kalki has been predicted for thousands of years in ancient scriptures. Humanity owes unlimited gratitude to the saints of the past whoms penance and prayers have given the world this opportunity.

  • Shirdi Sai Baba was born in Pathri village in Maharasthra State in 1835 or 1838, to a poor Hindu couple. The mother was a very pious woman who received a boon from a real-life vision of the Goddess Parvati and her consort Shiva. She was blessed to give birth to a divine child. His divine birth generated such effulgence and surge of dispassionate into his parents, they lost all interest in material life. The father intended to leave the family for his spiritual quest but his wife prepared to follow. In an extreme [and rather foolish] decision and probably much due to fate, the newborn was abandoned and left by the roadside. A childless Muslim Fakir and his wife found the child and took him home as their own. The fakir passed away in due time and the fakir's wife who had great affection for the child brought him up. Avataars are revolutionaries and always aware of their mission; the four year old child created an upstir in the community by praising Allah in the local Hindu temples and sing Hindi bhajans in mosques. One of Shirdi Sai Baba's main tasks was to unite the animosity that was common between the Hindu and Muslim community during his time. He would switch roles between being a Hindu and a Muslim on many occasions in his life, always causing discussions as to his real origin. Afraid of the consequences and not wanting to be dragged into disputes, after four years the child was handed over to a local philosopher in 1839 - Gopal Rao Deshmukh (Venkusa) - and was brought up under his care for 12 years. Venkusa was no ordinary person but a great saint.

  • Shirdi Baba stayed with Venkusa until the age of 16 and thereafter left to wander. He ended up in Shirdi village, where he began to live under a particular neem tree. According to some data Shirdi had claimed that his former guru (from a past birth) was burried under the tree. Baba had also told devotees much later in life that he had lived as the poet saint Kabir (15th century).
Shirdi Baba, who was officially nameless until the age of 20-21, suddenly disappeared from Shirdi for three years. He was brought back to Shirdi by Chandhubhai Patel in 1858 when Patel was searching for a missing horse belonging to him. Baba helped Patel to locate the horse through his supernatural abilities and Patel begged the Baba to accompany him to Shirdi. It is mainly from Patel's encounter with Shirdi Baba in 1858 onwards that the recorded reports contained in the Shri Sai Satcharitra begins while little is known of Shirdi Baba's life prior to that. In modern days there is often an impression given that the lives of saints like Shirdi Baba was always well received by the people. This is not fully true. Sri Shirdi Sai Baba was a temperamental personality and like so many saints throughout history he was viewed as rather 'mad' by his surrounding until he was more known. He lived as a very poor mendicant, often walking rounds begging for food and for oil to his singular small oil-lamp. He was often the source of pranks by those around him who were unable to see his true nature. Shirdi Sai Baba became accepted as a great saint on a broad scale after his mahasamadhi and particularly, after the Shri Sai Satcharita was compiled and the people began to hear stories of his greatness. His actual divine qualities were recognized by fairly few people during his own lifetime.

  • The Shri Sai Satcharita was compiled many years after Shirdi Sai Baba's passing (Mahasamadhi). According to Sathya Sai Baba some of the stories are slightly altered because by that time they were written down from memory. Many of the individuals who had contributed their stories to the Sai Satcharitra had forgotten finer details of dates and observations as they kept no diary.

It is interesting to note that Shirdi Baba's early teacher, Venkusa, was a much beloved spiritual teacher to Sathya Sai Baba's grandfather - Kondamaraju. Venkusa was a wandering story-teller of old lores and a saint in his own right. He would make sudden and unexpected visits to Puttaparthi (then known as Gopalapalli) and adjoining villages and do house visits in these areas. Kondamaraju was very fond of Venkusa and very devoted to spiritual values. During one of Venkusa's visits he blessed the then young Kondamaraju. Venkusa foretold that 'God' would play in Kondamaraju's lap in the future. As prophesied, Sathya Sai Baba was born as the son of Kondamaraju's younger sister's daughter, Easwaramma, in 1926 - eight years after the passing of Shirdi Sai Baba. The deserted tomb of the great Venkusa who became the great messanger for the birth of Sathya Sai, lay hidden in Hussainpura and is known as The Temple of Venkavadhuta.

By the blessing of Venkavadhuta, Sri Sathya Sai Baba was born.

  • You should realise the truth that the principle of Atma that is present in all beings is one and the same. As man is unable to understand his true nature, he is facing all kinds of problems in life. He is deluded by thinking that he is the body. When one realises that the same Atma that dwells in him also dwells in other living beings, one will experience and enjoy Divine proximity always. One who realises the Atmic principle leads his life with the firm conviction that Daiva Sannidhi (divine proximity) is his Pennidhi (greatest wealth).
