  • True devotion lies in performing actions that will sanctify time. I am not asking you to serve the whole world in a big way.

It is enough if you keep God in your heart and serve as per your capacity. The path of service is superior to spiritual practices like prayer, meditation and yoga.

Only through service can you please God. The human body is meant for serving others, not for indulging in selfish deeds. When selfishness becomes part and parcel of your life, you become involved in sinful activities.

Eschew selfishness; take to selfless service.           - BABA

  • Worship is just a means of educating the emotions. Human impulses and emotions have to be guided and controlled.

Just as the raging waters of a river have to be curbed by bunds, halted by dams, tamed by canals, and led quietly to the ocean which can swallow all floods without a trace, so too the age-long instincts of people have to be trained and transmuted by contact with higher ideals and powers.

When the fruit is ripe, it will fall off the branch of its own accord. Similarly, when equanimity saturates your heart, you lose contact with the world and slip into the lap of the Lord. - BABA

  • ssign to your mind the task of serving the Lord and it will grow tame. You hand over only ornaments that need repair or reshaping to the goldsmith. So too, give the Lord your mind that certainly needs repair, if not complete reconstruction. The blemish that affects the mind is illusion. It is like a fierce dog that will not allow any one to approach the master. Illusion is the Lord's pet and so, it will not harm you if He orders it not to. Hence, the way to avoid the dog is by calling out to the master loudly, so that he comes to welcome you himself, that is to say by praying to the Lord to shower His grace upon you.

  • Do not be deluded by the belief that life has been given to you for eating, drinking and enjoying other physical pleasures.

This rare blessing of birth as a human is not meant to be squandered this way.

What is the difference between human beings and animals?

It is qualities like kindness, compassion, forbearance and sympathy which differentiate human beings from animals.

But man tends to forget these inherent qualities out being absorbed in pandering to his selfish, mundane desires.

Those wearing the spectacles of selfishness can only see selfishness all around them. A defective vision produces an apparent defect in creation.

There is nothing wrong with Srishti (creation). All faults are due to the defective Dhrishti (vision). - BABA

  • You should cultivate an attitude of inseparable attachment to the Lord, who is your very self. If He is a flower, you should feel that you are the bee that sucks nectar from it; if He be a tree, feel that you are creeper that clings to it; if He be a cliff, then feel that you are a cascade running over it; if He be the sky, be a tiny star that twinkles in it; above all, be conscious of the truth that you and He are bound by Supreme Love. If you feel this intensely, the journey will be quick and the goal can be won easily.

  • The best way to get rid of weakness is to strike at its very roots - the mistaken notion that you are the body, with a name and form, the five senses, intelligence and the mind. In fact, these are like baggage. Don't you say, "my nose, my mind, my hand, my reason", just as you say, "my book, my umbrella?" Who is the 'I' that calls all these 'mine'? That is the real 'you'. It was there when you were born, and also when you were sleeping, forgetful of everything, even your body. That 'I' cannot be harmed; it does not change, it knows neither birth nor death. Learn the discipline that makes you aware of this Truth and you will be ever free and bold. That is real vidya, the Atmavidya (Knowledge of the Self), which the sages have gathered for you after intense penance and contemplation.

  • The ideal of a high standard of life, instead of a high standard of living, has played havoc within society. A high level of living insists on morality, humility, detachment, compassion; so the competitive greed for luxury and conspicuous consumption receives no encouragement and will be destroyed.

Now, people are slaves of their desires, and find themselves unable to conquer their thirst for pleasure and luxury. They have become too weak to keep their nature under control, and do not know how to arouse the divine Consciousness that is latent within them.

Spiritual discipline is the only way to effect this basic transformation. It involves the elimination of the mind which is the obstacle on the path. The grace of God, if invoked and won, can endow you with the necessary power.  - BABA.

  • The tongue is the armour of the heart; it guards one's life. Loud and irresponsible speech, full of anger and hate, affects the health of man. It breeds anger and hate in others. Silence is said to be golden. The silent man has no enemies, though he may not have many friends either. He has the opportunity to dive within himself and examine his own faults and failings. He has no more inclination to seek them in others. If your foot slips, you suffer a fracture; if your tongue slips, you fracture some one's faith or joy. That fracture can never be set right; that wound will fester for ever. Therefore, use the tongue with great care. The softer your speech, the lesser you talk, the sweeter you talk, the better the world will be.

  • During our lives we accept the help rendered to us by many thousands. We have to pay back this debt by helping as many people as we can. With genuine keenness or readiness to serve others, you can be happy in any group or community.

Derive bliss through seva (service) that is not done with any desire to get something in return. When you get a chance to help someone, rejoice at your good fortune.
The very eagerness to serve others will endow you with the power and skill necessary for the required service. - BABA

  • Any task undertaken with self-confidence is assured of success. Self-confidence is, therefore, absolutely necessary for everyone. Moreover, if you expect others to respect and love you, you should respect and love them equally.

Without respecting and loving others, you cannot expect any reciprocal feeling from them. In the same way, if you love God, God loves you.

Life consists of reaction, resound and reflection. You get back exactly what you do to others. The true indices of a good person are these: keep your word, adhere to truth, show gratitude where it is due, and stay firm in your self-confidence.

If you adhere to these tenets, you will overcome with ease any obstacles that may come your way. Hold on to your self-confidence and self-respect, and be ready for self-sacrifice. - BABA

  • People are so busy in worldly affairs that they do not want to think for themselves since this is the era of canned food, and everyone wants quick results.

We are today witnessing the commercialization of the ancient science of yoga. Even drugs are being used in order to obtain mystical experiences; this could be termed as 'instant meditation', like instant coffee.

What Rishis of the past achieved through lifelong penance and self-discipline can now be deemed to be redundant, and mankind considers that anyone can instantly transcend into the higher realms of the spirit just by pushing a button or consuming a drug.-BABA

  • Man's actions are related to desires and aversions. They are the cause of his joys and sorrows. All the world's ills arise from the evil thoughts and deeds of men. It is only when man is transformed that society can transform and the world be reformed. Man does not use his sense organs in the right way. He has eyes, but does not see what is good. He has ears, but does not listen to what is good. There is only one way to correct him. He has to be shown the spiritual path and guided to cultivate the virtues of Truth, Love and self-sacrifice. He must be weaned away from selfish pursuits and from arrogance and pride. His mind, which is the real culprit, has to be cleansed of all evil. One can acquire real peace and joy only when one turns one's thoughts towards God and away from the world.

  • What is compassion?

Seeing a person in distress and verbally expressing sympathy is not compassion.

Compassion must express itself in action to relieve the suffering. Nor should you adopt an attitude of aloofness or indifference under the plea that each one is suffering for his own folly. Though the suffering may indeed be due to one's mistakes - mistakes to which everyone is prone - we should seek to remedy such suffering, just as we try and find a way to relieve our own suffering.

Some people try to show off their sympathy by setting up charitable institutions and the like. True compassion should emanate from the heart, and should not find _expression in outward manifestations that only reveal one's vanity.-BABA

  • Dhyana does not connote merely the act of sitting erect, motionless and maintaining silence. It means merging of all thoughts and feelings in God.

Unless the mind dissolves itself completely in God, one cannot attain the fruit of Dhyana. Lord Krishna, in the Bhagavad-Gita, declares the ideal Dhyana and its fruit to be

"Ananyaaschinthayanthomaam Ye janah paryupaasathe. Theshaam nithyaabhiyukthanaam Yogakshemam vahaamyaham", meaning,

"For those persons who adore Me without any other thought or feeling, I will myself carry their burden, remain by their side always guiding and guarding them".- BABA

  • Man suffers from numerous ills because he has not understood the purpose of life.

The first thing he has to realize is that God is one, by whatever name and in whatever form the Divine is worshipped. The One chose to become the many. The Vedas declare, "God is one; the wise hail Him by many names".

It is the imagination of the observers which accounts for the apparent multiplicity of the Divine. The sun is only one, but its reflection appears in many vessels. Likewise, God is present in the hearts of different beings in varied forms and natures. - BABA
