One is one’s own refuge, who else could be the refuge? said the Buddha. (Dhp. XII 4.)

Buddha taught, encouraged and stimulated each person to develop themselves and work out their own emancipation, for humans have the power to liberate themselves from all bondage through their own personal effort and intelligence.

JAI SAI RAM!!!

diPika dear.....whenever something is mentioned about Buddha......my inner start twinkling......here something is said of not even Buddha but his disciple.....

Anand Shunyo. Anand means bliss; shunyo means absolute emptiness. Bliss descends only in absolute emptiness. It needs a space inside you, and it needs a space absolutely uncluttered by any furniture. And the mind is full of furniture: thoughts, memories, imagination, desires, projections, prejudices, philosophies, dogmas -- mind is almost a junkyard. It is so full of nonsense that there is no space left for bliss to enter.

Bliss goes on knocking from every door and window, but all is closed.

The whole work of a sannyasin is to empty oneself, to throw all this rubbish out. How not to be a Christian, how not to be a Hindu, how not to be a Mohammedan, how not to be a communist -- that's the work. How to negate this whole piled up nonsense of centuries; how not to be a German how not to be a Chinese, how not to be an Indian, how not to be that, how not to be white or black; and ultimately, how not to be a man or woman, tool.

Just to be, with no adjective attached to it, pure being, that's what I mean by absolute emptiness -- no past, no future. Then in the middle when you are just in the moment, there is space, infinite space. That space is shunyam. Buddha has called that space meditation. That is meditation. In that utter silence, in that utter emptiness, something from the beyond simply starts showering.

There is a beautiful parable about one of Buddha's chief disciples... He is sitting under a tree and then suddenly flowers start showering. He looks all around: "What is happening? -- the tree has no flowers, from where are the flowers coming? They are simply appearing from the sky!" He is puzzled, and then he sees gods above the tree showering flowers and he asks, "What is the matter?" And the gods say to him, "We are showering these flowers in gratefulness for your great sermon on silence."

But the disciple says, "I have not spoken a single word! What sermon are you talking about?" And the gods laugh and they say, "Yes, you have not spoken a single word and we have not heard a single word -- that is the sermon on silence. Neither have you spoken nor have we heard. You have been in silence -- that is the only sermon on silence. To be silent is the only way to say something about silence. You cannot say it in words. It can only be shown, it cannot be said. You have shown it so beautifully that we had to come from heaven. Just in tremendous gratitude we are showering these flowers on you!"

A beautiful story, of tremendous significance. Be silent, be empty, be a pure space, and flowers will go on showering -- flowers of bliss, flowers of love, flowers of beatitude, flowers of benediction.

904 already, my beloved brother Ramesh...., I congratulated you on your 900th in our private mails, so let me take this wonderful post of yours, a treasure like all your others, for an opportunity to say that from now on I'll stop the book-keeping. I started it to show appreciation and gratitude and both are still there, growing every day. But this counting seems no onger appropriate to me.
All of you, my beloved brothers and sisters, have become so dear to me, I cherish all your posts, whether they be many or few, so much - and so do all of us I dare say, that this counting no longer seems a right means to express my love for you. So I'll stop the counting for good, but each and every one of you including the many yet to come have their space right here in my heart.
May you all feel BABA's countless blessings every moment ..........

The Buddha became realized at the age of 35 and he taught for 45 years. He died at the age of 80, having delivered 84,000 talks during that time. Nothing was written during his time, but his advanced disciples were memorizing all his talks. It is said that three months after the Buddha left his body, five hundred of his closest disciples met together for three months, putting together their recollections of all the sayings and deeds of the Buddha. What these five hundred disciples finally agreed upon became the Pali canon, also known as the Tripitaka, or "three baskets", for the Theravada school.

The basic texts recognized by the Mahayana schools are derived from the Sutta Pitaka, but are often considered to have been revealed by the Buddha after he had passed into parinirvana (final exit from the body).

The Tripitaka comprises:

Vinaya Pitaka ("Basket of Discipline"): a collection of texts dealing with monastic rules.

Sutta Pitaka ("Basket of Discourse"): they are subdivided in 5 nikayas ("collections") and deal mainly with the incidents that occurred during the lifetime of the Buddha and sermons and doctrinal and ethical discourses attributed to the Buddha or, in a few cases, to his disciples.

Abhidhamma Pitaka ("Basket of Special [or Further] Doctrine") further elucidate obscure philosophical points, and are only recognized by the Theravadins.

The Dhammapada ("Way of Truth"), is an anthology of basic Buddhist teachings (primarily ethical teachings) found in the second text in the Khuddaka Nikaya ("Short Collection") of the Sutta Pitaka, and is accepted by all Buddhist schools of thought.

There is a Chinese sutra in which the Buddha asked all the
bodhisattvas their method for realizing enlightenment. Each one
described a specific meditation practice. Avalokiteshvara described
meditation on hearing. She said she starts her meditation by
listening to the sound of the roar of the sea. Then she takes that
Sound and turns it inward. She returns the hearing to listen to the
ear organ. By doing this she realizes the true way.

In the sutra the Buddha praised this method, the meditation on
listening, as the best method for enlightenment

Remember always that you are just a visitor here, a traveler passing through. your stay is but short and the moment of your departure unknown.
None can live without toil and a craft that provides your needs is a blessing indeed. But if you toil without rest, fatigue and wearness will overtake you, and you will denied the joy that comes from labour's end.
Speak quietly and kindly and be not forward with either opinions or advice. If you talk much, this will make you deaf to what others say, and you should know that there are few so wise that they cannot learn from others.
Be near when help is needed, but far when praise and thanks are being offered.
Take small account of might, wealth and fame, for they soon pass and are forgotten. Instead, nurture love within you and and strive to be a friend to all. Truly, compassion is a balm for many wounds.
Treasure silence when you find it, and while being mindful of your duties, set time aside, to be alone with yourself.
Cast off pretense and self-deception and see yourself as you really are.
Despite all appearances, no one is really evil. They are led astray by ignorance. If you ponder this truth always you will offer more light, rather then blame and condemnation.
You, no less than all beings have Buddha Nature within. Your essential Mind is pure. Therefore, when defilements cause you to stumble and fall, let not remose nor dark foreboding cast you down. Be of good cheer and with this understanding, summon strength and walk on.
Faith is like a lamp and wisdom makes the flame burn bright. Carry this lamp always and in good time the darkness will yield and you will abide in the Light.

The four immeasurables are found in one brief and beautiful prayer:

May all sentient beings have happiness and its causes,
May all sentient beings be free of suffering and its causes,
May all sentient beings never be separated from bliss without suffering,
May all sentient beings be in equanimity, free of bias, attachment and anger.
The Buddha taught the following to his son Rahula (from "Old path white clouds" by Thich Nhat Hahn):

"Rahula, practice loving kindness to overcome anger. Loving kindness has the capacity to bring happiness to others without demanding anything in return.
Practice compassion to overcome cruelty. Compassion has the capacity to remove the suffering of others without expecting anything in return.
Practice sympathetic joy to overcome hatred. Sympathetic joy arises when one rejoices over the happiness of others and wishes others well-being and success.
Practice non-attachment to overcome prejudice. Non-attachment is the way of looking at all things openly and equally. This is because that is. Myself and others are not separate. Do not reject one thing only to chase after another.
I call these the four immeasurables. Practice them and you will become a refreshing source of vitality and happiness for others

"If one tries to befriend an enemy for a moment, he becomes your friend.
The same thing occurs when one treats a friend as an enemy.
Therefore, by understanding the impermanence of temporal relations,
Wise ones are never attached to food, clothing or reputation, nor to friends or enemies.

The father becomes the son in another life,
Mother becomes the wife,
Enemy becomes friend;
It always changes.
Therefore there is nothing definite in samsara."

JAI SAI RAM!!!

Buddha says the greatest joy in life is freedom: freedom from all prejudices, freedom from all scriptures, freedom from all concepts and ideologies, freedom from all desires, freedom from all possessiveness and jealousy, freedom from all hatred, anger, rage, lust... in short, freedom from everything, so that you are just a pure consciousness, unbounded, unlimited. That is the greatest joy, and it is possible -- it is within everybody's grasp. You just have to grope for it a little. The groping will be in the dark, but it is not far away. If you try, if you make an effort, you are bound to find it. It is your birthright.

JAI SAI RAM!!!

Buddha says existence consists of consciousness. Existence itself is made of consciousness. And consciousness has always been here, is here, will be here. It can be asleep, it can be awake, but it is consciousness all the same. When it is asleep you work blindly, unconsciously. When it becomes awake you are enlightened. But there is no source of consciousness. Consciousness itself is the very foundation of the whole existence. Nothing is deeper than that. You cannot go beyond consciousness.”

JAI SAI RAM!!!

When the consciousness is divided, not mirror like, it becomes the mind. Mind is a broken mirror. In the root, mind is consciousness. If you stop making discriminations, if you stop making dual division -- choosing this against that, liking this, disliking that -- if you drop out of these divisions the mind again becomes a mirror, a pure consciousness.

To live a single day and hear a good teaching is better than to live a hundred years without knowing such teaching.

Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.
Buddha

To enjoy good health, to bring true happiness to one's family, to bring peace to all, one must first discipline and control one's own mind. If a man can control his mind he can find the way to Enlightenment, and all wisdom and virtue will naturally come to him.
Buddha

To keep the body in good health is a duty... otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.
Buddha

To live a pure unselfish life, one must count nothing as one's own in the midst of abundance.
Buddha

Unity can only be manifested by the Binary. Unity itself and the idea of Unity are already two.
Buddha

Virtue is persecuted more by the wicked than it is loved by the good.
Buddha

We are formed and molded by our thoughts. Those whose minds are shaped by selfless thoughts give joy when they speak or act. Joy follows them like a shadow that never leaves them.
Buddha

We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.
Buddha

We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make the world.
Buddha

What is the appropriate behavior for a man or a woman in the midst of this world, where each person is clinging to his piece of debris? What's the proper salutation between people as they pass each other in this flood?
Buddha

What we think, we become.
Buddha

Whatever words we utter should be chosen with care for people will hear them and be influenced by them for good or ill.
Buddha

When one has the feeling of dislike for evil, when one feels tranquil, one finds pleasure in listening to good teachings; when one has these feelings and appreciates them, one is free of fear.
Buddha

Without health life is not life; it is only a state of langour and suffering - an image of death.
Buddha

Work out your own salvation. Do not depend on others.
Buddha

You can search throughout the entire universe for someone who is more deserving of your love and affection than you are yourself, and that person is not to be found anywhere. You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe deserve your love and affection.
Buddha

You will not be punished for your anger, you will be punished by your anger.
Buddha

You, yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.
Buddha

Your work is to discover your work and then with all your heart to give yourself to it.

Thoughts give joy when they speak or act. Joy follows them like a shadow that never leaves them.

There has to be evil so that good can prove its purity above it.

To live a pure unselfish life, one must count nothing as one's own in the midst of abundance.

We are formed and molded by our thoughts. Those whose minds are shaped by selfless thoughts give joy when they speak or act. Joy follows them like a shadow that never leaves them.

We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make the world.

Whatever words we utter should be chosen with care for people will hear them and be influenced by them for good or ill.

The world, indeed, is like a dream and the treasures of the world are an alluring mirage! Like the apparent distances in a picture, things have no reality in themselves, but they are like heat haze.

When one has the feeling of dislike for evil, when one feels tranquil, one finds pleasure in listening to good teachings; when one has these feelings and appreciates them, one is free of fear.

A wise man, recognizing that the world is but an illusion, does not act as if it is real, so he escapes the suffering.

As irrigators lead water where they want, as archers make their arrows straight, as carpenters carve wood, the wise shape their minds.

Dukkha ( in Pali Language ) - Sorrow / Sadness / Suffering

Dukkha ( Sorrow / Sadness / Suffering ) - The First Noble Truth - The truth of sorrow

Dukkha is explaining sorrow, sadness and suffering. Not only that, it consists of incompleteness, instability, meaninglessness as well.

The Lord Buddha said that life consisted of sorrow, sadness and suffering. Human nature is not perfect. Our surroundings are not stable too. We suffer physically from pain, sickness, injury, tiredness, ageing, and death during our life time. Also we have psychological suffering such as sadness, fear, frustration, disappointment, and depression. Our life is subject to impermanence. Not only life, everything originated in this universe is impermanent. This means we are never able to keep permanently anything even our lives. We are aging. We get ill. We are becoming disfigured due to aging. We will die some day. But, we can not stop them.

There are three components we should know regarding  life and enjoyment of life.

Strong desire
Bad results due to strong desire
Relieving from the desire
For example :

When you see an attractive, beautiful person, you will like him or her. You like to look at him or her again and again. Then, you feel happiness. This is desire.

But, that particular person and his or her beauty are not stable. Not only that, also your happiness is not stable.

When you can't see the particular person, you will feel sadness, you suffer, become impatient. Sometimes you will do silly things. These are bad results due to strong desire.

If there is no desire or emotional bond, you will not feel sadness. You will not suffer. Then, you will be independent. This is the relief from desire.

There are three kinds of suffering according to the Lord Buddha.

Dukkha dukkha ( ordinary sorrow, suffering )

Dukkha dukkha ( ordinary sorrow, suffering )
Viparinama dukkha ( grief caused by change )
Sankhara dukkha ( sorrow, suffering due to six internal sense media of the body )

Dukkha dukkha ( ordinary sorrow, suffering )

This explains suffering due to birth, aging, getting sick, death, association with the unbeloved, separation from the loved, not getting what is wanted, all physical and mental suffering.

We suffer from everything mentioned above due to birth. If there is no birth, there will not be suffering. We don't like aging, getting sick, and death. But, we can not change them. So, we are suffering from them. Not only that, we feel sad, sorrow due to these factors.

Viparinama dukkha ( grief caused by change )

Everything is impermanent. From moment to moment they are changing continuously. We can not stop changing them. Once we are happy, we feel comfort. Next, we feel sad, fear, discomfort. Then, we don't like to feel them. But, we can not stop those feelings. So, we suffer. Even our feelings are changing. They are impermanent.

Sankhara dukkha ( sorrow, suffering due to six internal sense media of the body )

This is the most important component in the first noble truth. First of all, we should consider the concepts of "the animal being", "person", "I".

According to the Buddhism, "the animal being", "person", "I" consist of changeable physical and mental energies. These can be divided into five parts ( the five clinging aggregates ). We consist of these five clinging aggregates.

Bodily form ( Pali - rupa )
Faculty of perception (Pali - vedana )
Sense - Identification of physical or mental stimuli (Pali -sangna )
Mental formations (Pali - sankhara )
Knowledge ( Pali - vinknana )
These five consist of sorrow, suffering, incompleteness, instability. So, we are suffering due to these five components. Now, we should consider these five sections separately one by one.

Buddha

Your work is to discover your world and then with all your heart give yourself to it.
Buddha
