  • SAI VACHAN- Chapter 1

Sai vachan is a summary or brief of sai teachings, which baba taught to all the bhaktas, directly or through his miracles. It is purely based on the personal attainment of gyan that is extracted from baba’s darshan and reading his mahimas in various books.some of you may have diffrent views towards his teachings which is highly appreciated.

SAI Nath spiritual guru for some, lord for some, teacher for some, came to earth in form of a spiritual guru and taught the path of” shraddha” and “saburi”. If a bhakta is devoted to baba and is on the path of shraddha and Saburi he can feel the existance of baba in every action and sequence in his life.

The name”sai nath” when uttered gives a feeling of relaxation, bhakti and satisfaction.Sai Nath is incarnation of ” lord vishnu” and ” lord shiva” hence the pious combination of “bhakti” and Shakti”.Baba’s teachings are diffrent from other spiritual gurus in a way that he teaches the path to attain MOKSHA maintaing our daily duties and passing all the four ashrams of a human cycle.

A Person, who has controlled his mind, can achieve any success in his life. How far you are trying to control your mind?
The mind that judges not others ever remains tension-free.

“Shama aur maafi dono hi shabdo mei ‘MAA’ shabd ka prayog hota hai isliye kisi ko shama karna ya maaf karna uske prati mamta dikhana hai”

Baba says to forgive someone is to show motherhood towards that person. We do commit lots of mistakes and human errors in life , some of them are really blunders , no one in this whole universe has the courage or guts to forgive those blunders except for the gods most precious gift to human race”mother”. Mother’s have the power of motherhood, which is unique to them,by which they can make the greatest sacrifices and forgive the greatest blunders. In simpler terms mothers or”MAA” is a synonym for sacrifice, forgiveness and a divine power.

Both the words”shama” and “maafi” conatains the pious word “MAA”, so to forgive someone is to embrace his guilt and display the powers of divine motherhood (power, sacrifice, forgivness).

    BABA :

Baba has inummerable followers, when he was in his human avtar there were few people in shirdi who did not believe in his powers and malik’s existance in form of baba, they ploted many tricks so that his bhaktas would lose their shraddha in him, but they forgot they were ploting tricks against the creator of biggest puzzle”universe”. Baba knew all their tricks , he taught them lessons but never punished them. They became the followers of baba later as they were amazed by his powers of SHAMA and MAAFI.

    MORAL:

It is really easy to punish and make one realise his mistake but to forgive someone and make him realise his mistake on his own is the biggest punishment for the deeds of a sinner

“SANSAR MEI SUKH AUR DUKH RITU KE SAMAN HAI, SUKH KE BAAD DUKH AUR DUKH KE BAAD SUKH KA AANA NISHCHIT HAI.”

Human life is a cycle wherein there are diffrent phases.when everthing goes according to our wishes, then we feel happy and comfortable but when things go againts our wishes we find ourselves in low phase.
According to sadguru life is a cyclic event in which after every dark night there is a bright day, after every dawn there is a dusk ,after every up there is a down , after every high there is a low and vice versa.we will be blessed if we understand the cyclic nature of events taking place in life and instead of mourning in our low phases take them as a challenge and pass them with full strength .
whenevr we are in low phases we usually blame God for been responsible to put us in that situation, but we forget that it is not the God but our own karmas which have put us in that situation, we tend to remmember god and expect him to change the fruits of Karma, which he cannot do.

In such circumstances we should let ourselves fall at the feet of sadguru remmember him, this devotion doesnot change the fate but we feel a sense of security and guidedness. The strength attained from such bhakti leads us through the difficult phases of life .

Those people who remmember god in there difficult phase , surrender them to his holy feet, sadguru blesses them and they passe most difficult phases of life as a practicle lessons of life, not mourning on them but learning from them.

    BABA

Shirdi is a blessed land where the holy feet of Sadguru Shri SAi Nath have their imprints. The bhaktas of baba whether in shirdi or in any other part of world carry the impressions of his love and devotion in their hearts. Sai nath been a sadguru had a unique personality, he was attached to his bhaktas outwardly but in wardly he was deattached to all the essences of wordly pleasures.there are many incidents which show that when baktas in shirdi suffered there karma and went to baba for his blessings, baba though couldnt change their fate, but guided them in such a way that the pain and discomfort caused due to their karmas became a lesson for them to remmember for life time.

    MORAL

When we suffer our deeds, instead of blaming god for our situation we should take his refuge , meditate on him face the situation and learn a lesson to comfort ourselves by taking his blessings everytime we face a low phase in life

“KOI VAYAKTI AAPNE JEEVAN MEI KITNA SUKH YA DUKH BOGTA HAI USKE AAPNE KARMO PAR NIRBAR KARTA HAI”.

Happiness and sadness are like cyclic intervals or phases through which every human being has to pass. But the duration and intensity of each phase is dependent on our own deeds. When we are happy we never remmember god and never thank him for the favors he has bestowed on us. But when we are sad we blame him for the happenings .

Neither our happiness nor our miseries are govered by him, though he plays an inevitable role in the effect of its implications on us.Then who decides if we should get the flowers of happiness or sparks of sorrow?

KARMA, the sole purpose god has given us a human form is the only factor that decides that if we deserve the all the happiness we desire for and how should we get it. God has maintained balance in all the objects in this univerese. For eg: take food chains, grass and plants are eaten by herbivorous animals, these herbivourous animals are eaten by carnivorous animals and the carinivorous animals by omnivorous who inturn are eaten by scavangers, this chain so they are all dependent on each other and every link though strongest has a storonger link above it, which determines its fate.

We are born to die the human form of incarnation given by almighty to us is just an evaluvation sheet to calculate how should we live in this incarnation and what our next incarnation would be.If we are happy that is fruit of our good deeds and thoughts , but if we are sad that is spark of our deeds and actions which can be overpowered by only remmembering and serving almighty.

    BABA

According to baba every human being in this world suffers from the outcomes of his karma. So instead of blaming god for our unhappiness we can remmember him to minimise the effect of this unhappiness.
There was a lady in shirdi Mrs. Kharpande who gives a perfect example to explain the above vachan.

“Every noon she brought naivedya herself to the Masjid, and after it was accepted by Baba, she used to return and take her meals. Seeing her steady and firm devotion, Baba wanted to exhibit it to others. One noon she brought a dish containing Sanza (wheat-pudding), purees, rice, soup, and kheer (sweet rice) and other sundry articles to the Masjid. Baba, who usually waited for hours, got up at once, went up to His dining seat and removing the outer covering from the dish began to partake of the things zealously. Shama then asked Him - “Why this partiality? You throw away dishes of others and do not care to look at them, but this You draw to You earnestly and do justice to it. Why is the dish of this woman so sweet? This is a problem to us.” Baba then explained - “This food is really extra-ordinary. In former birth this lady was a merchant’s fat cow yielding much milk. Then she disappeared and took birth in a gardener’s family, then in a Kshatriya family, and married a merchant. Then she was born in a Brahmin family. I saw her after a very long time, let Me take some sweet morsels of love from her dish.”
    (* source:hemantpant, sai sachitra , chapter-27, )

    MORAL

All the situations we face are the seeds we sow by our deeds and the fruits we bear are happiness and sorrow, so we should never blame malik for our miseries rather we should thank him for been with us and supporting us and guiding us through the tough phases in our lives. We are soley reponsible for our own conditions we should remmember him to share our happiness and also pray to him to minimise our miseries which are outcome of our own actions.

  • Precious Sayings of Sri Shirdi Sai Baba

    1. Action - Karma
This deha prarabdha (present birth) is the result of the karma (action) done by you in the former births.

    2. Assurance
If a man utters My name with love, I shall fulfill all his wishes and increase his devotion. If he sings earnestly My life and deeds, him I shall beset in front and back and on all sides.

    3. Beauty
We have not to bother about beauty or ugliness of the person, but to concentrate solely on God underlying that form.

    4. Charity
The donor gives, that is, sows his seeds, only to reap a rich harvest in future. Wealth should be means to work out Dharma. If it is not given before, you do not get it now. So, the best way to receive it is to give.

    5. Contentment
One must rest content with one’s lot.

    6. Dakshina
The giving of dakshina (reverential gift) advances vairagya (non-attachment) and thereby bhakti (devotion).

    7. Death
None dies; see with your inner eyes. Then you will realise that you are God and not different from Him. Like worn-out garments the body is cast away.

    8. Illusion
Whenever any idea of joy or sorrow arises in your mind, resist it. Do not give room to it. It is pure illusion.

    9. Destiny
Whosoever is destined to be struck will be struck. Whosoever is to die will die. Whosoever is to be caressed will be caressed.

    10. Discrimination
There are two sorts of things - the good and the pleasant. Both these approach a man for acceptance. He has to think and choose one of them. The wise man prefers the good to the pleasant but the unwise, through greed and attachment, chooses the pleasant and thereby cannot gain Brahma gyana (self-realisation).

  • 11. Devotee
He who withdraws his heart from wife, child and parents and loves me is My real lover or devotee and he merges in me like a RIVER IN THE SEA.

    12. Devotion
Knowledge of the Vedas or fame as a great jnani (learned scholar) of formal bhajan (worship) are of no avail unless they are accompanied by bhakti (devotion).

    13. Differences
People differentiate between themselves and others, their properties with other’s properties. This is wrong. I am in you and you are in Me. Meditate on the self with a question "Who am I?"

    14. Duty
Unless a man discharges satisfactorily and disinterestedly the duties of his station in life, his mind will not be purified.

    15. Egoism
The teachings of a Guru are of no use to a man who is full of egoism and who always thinks about sense-objects.

    16. Enemy
Who is whose enemy? Do not say of anyone that he is your enemy. All are one and the same.

    17. Equanimity
Let the world go topsy-turvy, you remain where you are. Standing or staying at your own place, look calmly at the show of all things passing before you.

    18. Exploitation
Nobody should take the labour of others gratis. The worker should be paid his dues promptly and liberally.

    19. Feeding
Know for certain that he who feeds the hungry, really serves Me with food. Regard this as an axiomatic truth.

    20. Food
Sitting in the masjid (mosque) I shall never, never speak untruth. Take pity on Me like this : first give bread to the hungry and then eat yourself. Note this well.

  • 21. Forbearance
Our Karma is the cause of happiness and sorrow. Therefore, put up with whatever comes to you.

    22. God
God lives in all beings and creatures, whether they be serpents or scorpions. He is the greatest wirepuller of the world, and all beings, serpents, scorpions, etc., obey His command.

    23. God’s Gifts
What a man gives does not last long and it is always imperfect. But what my sircar (God) gives, lasts to the end of life. No other gift from any man can be compared to His.

    24. God’s Grace
You must always adhere to truth and fulfill all the promises you make. Have shraddha (faith) and saburi (patience). Then I will always be with you wherever you are.

    25. God’s Will
Unless God wills it, nobody meets us on the way; unless God wills, nobody can do any harm to us.

    26. Goodness
If you act in a good way, good will really follow.

    27. Greed
Greed and Brahma are poles asunder; they are eternally opposed to each other. Where there is greed, there is no room for thought or meditation of the Brahma. Then how can a greedy man get dispassion and salvation.

    28. Guru
Stick to your own Guru with unabated faith, whatever the merits of other gurus and however little the merits of your own.

    29. Guru’s Grace
The mother tortoise is on one bank of the river and her young ones are on the other. She gives neither milk nor warmth to them. Her mere glance gives them warmth. The young ones do nothing but remember (meditate upon) their mother. The tortoise glance is, to the young ones, a downpour of nectar, the only source of sustenance and happiness. Similar is the relationship between the Guru and his disciples.

    30. Humility
Humility is not towards all. Severity is necessary in dealing with the wicked.

  • 31. Happiness
If others hate us, let us take to nama Japa (chanting of God’s name) and avoid them. Do not bark at people; do not be pugnacious. Bear with others’ reproach. This is the way to happiness.

    32. Help
If someone begs anything and if that be in your hand or power and if you can grant the request, give it. Do not say, ‘no’. If you have nothing to give them, give a polite negative reply but do not mock or ridicule the applicant nor get angry with him.

    33. Hospitality
No one comes to us without Rinanubandha (some previous bond of give and take). So when any dog, cat, pig, fly or person approaches you, do not drive it or him away with the words ‘Hat - Hat’, ‘Jit - Jit’.

    34. Inquiry
Inquire always : Who am I?

    35. Introspection
We must see things for ourselves. What good is there in going about asking for this man or that for his views and experiences.

    36. Liberation
Service at the feet of Guru is essential to attain moksha (liberation).

    37. Lust
A person who has not overcome lust cannot see (realise) God.

    38. Name Chanting
If you do this - chanting ‘Raja Ram’, your mind will attain peace and you will be immensely benefited.

    39. Non-possession
Everything belongs to us for use. Nothing is for us to possess.

    40. Omnipresence
I am not confined within this body of three and a half cubic height; I am everywhere. See me in every place.

  • 41. Oneness
The dog which you saw before meals and to which you gave the piece of bread is one with Me, so also other creatures (cats, pigs, flies, cows, etc.) are one with me. I am roaming in their forms. So abandon the sense of duality and serve Me as you did today (by feeding that dog).

    42. Poverty
Poverty is the highest of riches and superior to Lord’s position. God is brother of the poor. Faqir is the real Emperor. Faqir does not perish, but empire is soon lost.

    43. Quarrel
If anybody comes and abuses you or punishes you, do not quarrel with him. If you cannot endure it, speak a simple word or two, or else go away from that place. But do not battle with him and behave like this.

    44. Questioning
Mere questioning is not enough. The question must not be made with any improper motive or attitude or to trap the Guru and catch him at mistakes in the answer, or out of idle curiosity. It must be with a view to achieving moksha or spiritual progress.

    45. Reality
Brahma is the only ‘Reality’ and the Universe is ephemeral and no one in this world, be he son, father or wife, is really ours.

    46. Saints
Daily take darshan of Siddhas, i.e., perfect saints. Live a moral life. Then you will be pure even in death.

    47. Self-realisation
The idea that "I am the body" is a great illusion, and attachment to this idea is the cause of bondage. Leave this idea and therefore the attachment, if you want to reach the goal of self-realisation.

    48. Service
Seva is not rendering service while still retaining the feeling that one is free to offer or refuse service. One must feel that he is not the master of the body, that the body is Guru’s and exists merely to render service to Him.

    49. Sin
Inflicting pain on others by body, mind and speech is sin, the reverse is merit, good.

    50. Support
Come what may, stick to your Support, i.e., Guru, and ever remain steady, always in union with Him.

    51. Surrender
It is my special characteristic to free any person who surrenders completely to Me and who does worship Me faithfully and who remembers Me and meditates on Me constantly.

    52. Truth
You should have truth always with you. Then I will be always with you, wheresoever you are and at all times.

    53. Unity
Rama and Rahim were one and the same; there was not the least difference between them; then why should their devotees fall out and quarrel among themselves? You ignorant folk, children, join hands and bring both communities together, act sanely and thus you will gain your object of national unity.

    54. Vicissitudes of Life
Gain and loss, birth and death, are in the hands of God. But how blindly people forget that God looks after life as long as it lasts!

    55. Wordly Honour
Do not be deluded by wordly honour. The form of the deity should be firmly fixed in the mind. Let all the senses and mind be ever devoted to the worship of the Lord.

  • Pleasure and pain depends upon one's attitude

Das Ganu a devotee Shirdi Sai Baba once took to translating the Ishavasya Upanishad but could not get to the essence of the Upanishad. He sought the help of many people to resolve his problem but was still unable to understand the gist of the work. Hence he resorted to seek the help of his Guru Sri Sai Baba. Baba asked him not to worry and that Kaka Mahajan's maid will clarify his doubt. Every one around were surprised at Baba's solution and some even thought that Baba was joking. But Das Ganu showed no signs of delay in starting for Kaka's house.

During his stay at Kaka's place once he heard a poor girl who was the sister of Namaya the servant of Kaka singing a beautiful song while engaged in some household chores. The song was about a beautiful crimson sari but she was dressed in rags. Das Ganu took pity for the girl's plight as she was robed in rags while singing about a beautiful sari. He arranged Rao Bhadhur M.V Pradhan to buy her a beautiful chirdi( a small sai). The girl was overjoyed as she danced about wearing her new chirdi. The next day she was clothed in her old rags but her cheerful disposition remained the same as she sang on joyfully.

Das Ganu was then enlightened with the fact that one has to enjoy what ever is presented to him with the spirit of equanimity. The events in one's life have to be accepted with the right spirit that God bestows them all for one's own benefit. Here in this incident the girl, the torn dress and the new chirdi, the donor, the spirit of acceptance while wearing the old as well as the new clothes are all different aspects of the same all-pervading power. Thus contentment with the belief that what ever happens is the ordinance of God will lead one to free oneself from attachments to worldly issues. This in turn will help towards attaining self-realization. Thus Das Ganu was enlightened with the gist of the Upanishad.

A Person, who has controlled his mind, can achieve any success in his life. How far you are trying to control your mind?
The mind that judges not others ever remains tension-free.

“ MALIK KO KABI HUKUM NAHI DENA CHAIYE UNSE VINITI KARNI CHAIYE”

A prayer says ” jaya maini jaisa baav taya taisa anubhav“which means the intentions by which we pray to god we get his blessings in the same form. If you  pray him as guru, you will have his blessings as guru , if you pary him as father you will get the blessings of a  father and if you pray him as mother , he will be a mother to you.

When we are upset or we pray him for something , we expect him to help us. Sometimes our prayers are answered and sometimes not. If we go deep insight ourselves and ask why is it “sometimes” why not “alwaz”, the answer lies within us,did we pray him whole heartedly?,were the intentions of our prayers authentic?Did we order him or request him to answer our prayers?

We can  order god ers or request him to answer our payers. The diffrence in ordering and requesting him is that when we order him to answer our prayers we have an element of “Self-Pride” or “Ahamkaar” in our prayers.God never answers the prayers of a devotee who has the sin of Ahamkaar in him.

When we request him to answer our prayers we submit ourselves to his pious feet, all our sins , all our good deeds are all at his submission, we submit our souls to him , and when he accepts us , he answers all our prayers.

If our submissions are full of love , devotions, submissiveness, god accepts our prayers and is sure to answer them , all we have to do is to pray him with “Shraddha” and “Saburi”.

    BABA

Sadguru Sai Nath’s way of answering his devotee ’s prayers is unique. If a bhakta  has submitted evrything to baba’s pious feet, the omniscent baba always answers his bhakta’s prayers, but if some one orders baba to fulfill his wishes , baba first fills  the devotes hearts with humbleness , make him realise that he has got nothing of his own of which he should be so proud of.After the bhakta realises the truth of existance baba bless him with knowldege and bliss.

    MORAL

If  you want your guru to bless you with his knowledge , bliss and answer your prayers , bow to his pious feet with humble heart and request him to bless you with all his knowledge which will enlighten your path and make your life happy and worthy.

    SAB KA MALIK EK”

“DUKH MEI BI JO WAYAKTI MALIK PAR VISHWAS RAKHTA HAI UNHE YAAD KARTA HAI , UNKI BHAKTI KARTA HAI, BAGWAN BE USSE SADA YAAD RAKHTE HAI , USE AAPNI SHARAN MEI LETE HAI”

Humans enter the life cycle to give an account of their previous karmas. The happiness in our life is a fruit of our previous karmas and the sorrow is the curse of the same. To equllibrium the  karmas god has give us this cycle of life. When our good karmas exceed the account of bad  karmas, our life is tracked to attainment of god and then nirvana and finally moksha.

The cycle of sorrow and happiness sometimes deviates us from the path of bhakti. We loose our faith in hard times and start blaming the almighty for whatever is happening in our life.

People who blame malik , for all sorrows instead of seeking their guidance as to how to overcome sorrow and bear the curse of the previous bad karmas , they are taken over by the sorrows and they  have a hard time in fighting with life.

People who accept  the fate of their karmas and pray constantly to malik ,in sorrow, malik alwaz holds the hand of bhakta and guides him or her to bear the curse the fate of ill karmas. Malik takes all the pains of his bhaktas and makes it very easy for him to  pass through the sufferings.

    BABA

Sadguru Sainath always  suffered the fate of his bhakta’s. he was torch to light the path which his bhaktas had to cover to bear the sufferings of their ill karmas.Baba couldnot change the fate  but he always guided his bhakta who suffered their karmas.

    MORAL

The easiest way to suffer the ill karmas is to seek a guidance of a guru who can hold your hand and take you smoothly through the most difficult path of sufferings. If you have full faith in your guru in sorrow his blessings would sail u smoothly through the most difficult sea of sorrow.
