Somebody may raise a doubt here and ask - "Did Baba distribute vegetable and animal food as prasad alike to all His devotees?" The answer is plain and simple. Those who were accustomed to (take) animal food were given food from the Handi as prasad and those who were not so accustomed, were not allowed to touch it. He never created in them any wish or desire to indulge in this food. There is a principle well established that when a Guru himself gives anything as prasad, the disciple who thinks and doubts whether it is acceptable or otherwise, goes to peridition. In order to see how any disciple has imbibed this principle, Baba at times proposed tests. For instance, on an Ekadashi day He gave some rupees to Dada Kelkar and asked him to go in person to Koralha to get mutton from there. This Dada Kelkar was an orthodox Brahmin and kept all orthodox manners in his life. He knew that offering wealth, grain and clothes etc., to a Sad-guru was not enough but that implicit obedience to and prompt compliance with His order was the real Dakshina that pleased Him most. So Dada Kelkar dressed himself and started for the place. Then Baba called him back and said, "Don't go yourself, but send somebody." Then Dada sent servant Pandu for the purpose. Seeing him starting, Baba asked Dada to call him back and cancelled that programme. On another occation Baba asked Dada just to see how the saltish `Pulava' (mutton dish) was done. The latter said casually and formally that it was alright. Then Baba said to him - "Neither you have seen it with your eyes, nor tasted in with your tongue, then how could you say that it was good? Just take out the lid and see." Saying this Baba caught his arm and thrust it into the pot and added, "Draw out your arm and taking a ladle, put some quantity in the dish without caring for your orthodoxy and without blustering." When a wave of real love rises in a mother's mind, she pinches her child with her hand and when it begins to cry and shout, she hugs it close to her bosom. Similarly Baba, in a true motherly way pinched Dada Kelkar in this fashion. Really no saint or guru will ever force his orthodox disciple to eat forbidden food and defile himself thereby.

Cup of Butter-Milk

Once Hemadpant had eaten his full in this company, when Baba offered him a cup of butter-milk. Its white appearance pleased him, but he was afraid that there was no space inside for it. He, however, took a sip which proved very tasty. Seeing his faltering attitude, Baba said - "Drink it all, you won't get any such opportunity hereafter." He drank it off then, but found that Baba's words were prophetic, for He passed away soon.

Now, readers, we have certainly to thank Hemadpant. He drank the cup of butter-milk, but has supplied us with sufficient quantity of nectar in the form of Baba's Leelas. Let us drink cups and cups of this nectar and be satisfied and happy.

a story of two little lizards. Once Baba was sitting in the Masjid. A devotee sat in front of Him, when a lizard tick-ticked. Out of curiosity, the devotee asked Baba whether this tick-ticking of the lizard signified anything; was it a good sign or a bad omen? Baba said that the lizard was overjoyed as her sister from Aurangabad was coming to see her. The devotee sat silent, not making out the meaning of Baba's words. Immediately, a gentleman from Aurangabad came on horse-back to see Baba. He wanted to proceed further, but his horse would not go, as it was hungry and wanted grams. He took out a bag from his shoulders to bring grams and dashed it on the ground to remove dirt. A lizard came out therefrom and in the presence of all, climbed up the wall. Baba asked the questioner devotee to mark her well. She at once went strutting to her sister. Both sisters met each other after a long time, kissed and embraced each other, whirled round and danced with love! Where is Shirdi and where is Aurangabad? How should the man on horse-back come there from Aurangabad with the lizard? And how should Baba make the prophesy of the meeting of the two sisters? All this is really very wonderful and proves the omniscience -- the all-knowing nature of Baba.

आटा पीसने का तात्पर्य


शिरडीवासियों ने इस आटा पीसने की घटना का जो अर्थ लगाया, वह तो प्रायः ठीक ही है, परन्तु उसके अतिरिक्त मेरे विचार से कोई अन्य भी अर्थ है । बाब शिरड़ी में 60 वर्षों तक रहे और इस दीर्घ काल में उन्होंने आटा पीसने का कार्य प्रायः प्रतिदिन ही किया । पीसने का अभिप्राय गेहूँ से नहीं, वरन् अपने भक्तों के पापो, दुर्भागयों, मानसिक तथा शाशीरिक तापों से था । उनकी चक्की के दो पाटों में ऊपर का पाट भक्ति तथा नीचे का कर्म था । चक्की का मुठिया जिससे कि वे पीसते थे, वह था ज्ञान । बाबा का दृढ़ विश्वास था कि जब तक मनुष्य के हृदय से प्रवृत्तियाँ, आसक्ति, घृणा तथा अहंकार नष्ट नहीं हो जाते, जिनका नष्ट होना अत्यन्त दुष्कर है, तब तक ज्ञान तथा आत्मानुभूति संभव नहीं हैं ।

यह घटना कबीरदास जी की उसके तदनरुप घटना की स्मृति दिलाती है । कबीरदास जी एक स्त्री को अनाज पीसते देखकर अपने गुरू निपतिनिरंजन से कहने लगे कि मैं इसलिये रुदन कर रहा हूँ कि जिस प्रकार अनाज चक्की में पीसा जाता है, उसी प्रकार मैं भी भवसागर रुपी चक्की में पीसे जाने की यातना का अनुभव कर रहा हूँ । उनके गुरु ने उत्तर दिया कि घबड़ाओ नही, चक्की के केन्द्र में जो ज्ञान रुपी दंड है, उसी को दृढ़ता से पकड़ लो, जिस प्रकार तुम मुझे करते देख रहे हो ष उससे दूर मत जाओ, बस, केन्द्र की ओप ही अग्रसर होते जाओ और तब यह निशि्चत है कि तुम इस भवसागर रुपी चक्की से अवश्य ही बच जाओगे ।

ग्रन्थ लेखन का हेतु

किस प्रकार विषूचिका (हैजा) के रोग के प्रकोप को आटा पिसवाकर तथा उसको ग्राम के बाहर फेमककर रोका तथा उसका उन्मूलन किया, बाबा की इस लीला का प्रथम अध्याय में वर्णन किया जा चुका है । मैंने और भी लीलाएँ सुनी, जिनसे मेरे हृदत को अति आनंद हुआ और यही आनंद का स्त्रोत काव्य (कविता) रुप में प्रकट हुआ । मैंने यह भी सोचा कि इन महान् आश्चर्ययुक्त लीलाओं का वर्णन बाबा के भक्तों के लिये मनोरंजक इवं शिक्षाप्रद सिदृ होगा तथा उनके पाप समूल नष्ट हो जायेंगे । इसलिये मैंने बाबा की पवित्र गाथा और मधुर उपदेशों का लेखन प्रारम्भ कर दिया । श्री साईं की जीवनी न तो उलझनपूर्ण और न संकीर्ण ही है, वरन् सत्य और आध्यात्मिक मार्ग का वास्तविक दिग्दर्शन कराती है ।

गुरु की आवश्यकता

इस विषय में बाबा ने क्या उद्गगार प्रकट किये, इस पर हेमाडपंत दृारा लिखित कोई लेख या स्मृतिपत्र प्राप्त नहीं है । परंतु काकासाहेब दीक्षित ने इस विषय पर उनके लेख प्रकाशित किये हैं । बाबा से भेंट करने के दूसरे दिन हेमाडपंत और काकासाहेब ने मसजिद में जाकर गृह लौटने की अनुमति माँगी । बाबा ने स्वीकृति दे दी ।

किसी ने प्रश्न किया – बाबा, कहाँ जायें । उत्तर मिला – ऊपर जाओ । प्रश्न – मार्ग कैसा है ।

बाबा – अनेक पंथ है । यहाँ से भी एक मार्ग है । परंतु यह मार्ग दुर्गम है तथा सिंह और भेड़िये भी मिलते है ।

काकासाहेब – यदि पथ प्रदर्शक भी साथ हो तो ।

बाबा – तब कोई कष्ट न होगा । मार्ग-प्रदर्शक तुम्हारी सिंह और भेड़िये और खन्दकों से रक्षा कर तुम्हें सीधे निर्दिष्ट स्थान पर पहुँचा देगा । परंतु उसके अभाव में जंगल में मार्ग भूलने या गड्रढे में गिर जाने की सम्भावना है । दाभोलकर भी उपर्युक्त प्रसंग के अवसर पर वहाँ उपस्थित थे । उन्होंने सोचा कि जो कुछ बाबा कह रहे है, वह गुरु की आवश्यकता क्यों है । इस प्रश्न का उत्तर है (साईलीला भाग 1, संख्या 5 व पृष्ठ 47 के अनुसार) । उन्होंने सदा के लिये मन में यह गाँठ बाँध ली कि अब कभी इस विषय पर वादविवाद नहीं करेंगे कि स्वतंत्र या परतंत्र व्यकति आध्यात्मिक विषयों के लिये कैसा सिदृ होगा । प्रत्युत इसके विपरीत यथार्थ में परमार्थ-लाभ केवल गुरु के उरदेश में किया गया है, जिसमें लिखा है कि राम और कृष्ण महान् अवतारी होते हुए भी आत्मानुभूति के लिये राम को अपने गुरु वसिष्ठ और कृष्ण को अपने गुरु सांदीपनि की शरण में जाना पड़ा था । इस मार्ग में उन्नति प्राप्त करने के लिये केवल श्रदृा और धैर्य-ये ही दो गुण सहायक हैं ।

Baba meant to say, "If you spread your palms with devotion before Me, I am immediately with you, day and night. Though, I am here bodily, still I know what you do; beyond the saven seas. Go wherever you will, over the wide world, I am with you. My abode is in your heart and I am within you. Always worship Me, Who is seated in your heart, as well as, in the hearts of all beings, Blessed and fortunate, indeed, is he who knows Me thus."

Sai Baba gave His complete assent to the writing of the Sat-Charita and said, "I fully agree with you regarding the writing of Sat Charita. You do your duty, don’t be afraid in the least, steady your mind and have faith in My words. If my Leelas are written, the Avidya (nescience) will vanish and if they are attentively, and devoutly listened to, the consciousness of the worldly existence will abate, and strong waves of devotion, and love will rise up and if one dives deep into My Leelas, he would get precious jewels of knowledge."

The Lord entrusts different works to different devotees. Some are given the work of building temples and maths, or ghats (flight of steps) on rivers; some are made to sing the glories of God; some are sent on pilgrimages

Light houses are constructed at various places in the sea, to enable the boatmen to avoid rocks and dangers, and make them sail safely. Sai Baba’s stories serve a similar purpose in the ocean of worldly existence. They surpass nectar in sweetness, and make our worldly path smooth and easy to traverse. Blessed are the stories of the saints. When they enter our hearts through the ears, the body - consciousness or egoism and the sense of duality vanish; and when they are stored in the heart, doubts fly out to all sides, pride of the body will fall, and wisdom will be stored in abundance. The description of Baba’s pure fame, and the hearing of the same, with love, will destroy the sins of the devotee and, therefore, this is the simple Sadhana for attaining salvation. The Sadhana for Krita Age was Shamadama (tranquillity of mind and body), for Treta Age, sacrifice, for Dwapara, worship, and for Kali (present) Age, it is singing of the name and glory of the Lord
