  • Metta Sutta
    Sutta Nipata I.8
    The Buddha's Words on Loving-Kindness
This is what should be done
By one who is skilled in goodness,
And who seeks1 the path of peace:
Let them be able and upright,
    Straightforward and gentle in speech.
    Humble and not conceited,
    Contented and easily satisfied.
Unburdened with duties and frugal in their ways.
Peaceful and calm, and wise and skillful,
Not proud and demanding in nature.
Let them not do the slightest thing
That the wise would later reprove.
Wishing: In gladness and in safety,
May all beings be at ease.
    Whatever living beings there may be;
Whether they are weak or strong, omitting none,
The great or the mighty, medium, short or small,
    The seen and the unseen,
Those living near and far away,
    Those born and to-be-born,
May all beings be at ease!
    Let none deceive another,
Or despise any being in any state.
Let none through anger or ill-will
    Wish harm upon another.
Even as a mother protects with her life
    Her child, her only child,
    So with a boundless heart
Should one cherish all living beings:
Radiating kindness over the entire world
    Spreading upwards to the skies,
    And downwards to the depths;
    Outwards and unbounded,
    Freed from hatred and ill-will.
Whether standing or walking, seated or lying down
    Free from drowsiness,
    One should sustain this recollection.
This is said to be the sublime abiding.
By not holding to fixed views,
The pure-hearted one, having clarity of vision,
Being freed from all sense desires,
Is not born again into this world.

  • The Metta Bhavana is a meditation for developing lovingkindness.

“Bhavana” means “cultivation” or “development,” and “Metta” is a word that means “love,” “friendliness,” or “lovingkindness.” So this is a meditation practice where we actively cultivate some very positive emotional states towards others, as well as to ourselves.

This meditation practice helps us to bring more harmony into our relationships with others, so that we experience less conflicts, resolve existing difficulties, and deepen our connections with people we already get on with.

This meditation helps us to overcome anger, resentment, and hurt.

It helps us to empathize more, and to be more considerate, kind, and forgiving. We can also learn to appreciate others more, concentrating more on their positive qualities and less on their faults. We learn to be more patient.

In this meditation practice, we also cultivate Metta towards ourselves, so that we experience less internal conflict, and learn to appreciate ourselves more.

  • Stanzas 4-8 of the Metta Sutta say: "Whatsoever living beings there are; feeble or strong, may all beings, without exception, be happy minded. Let not one deceive another nor despise any person whatsoever in any place. In anger or ill-will, let him not wish any harm to another. Just as a mother would protect her only child at the risk of her own life, even so let him cultivate a boundless heart towards all beings. Let thoughts of boundless love pervade the whole world; above, below and across without any obstruction, without any hatred, without any enmity."

Several accounts illustrate the fact that by showing love and kindness, or simply by exuding thoughts of love and compassion, the violent natured can be made to become calm. The Buddha calmed the dreaded robber Angulimal and a mad elephant called Nalagiri by meditation of loving kindness. A German baroness Else Buchcholz, who became a Buddhist nun in 1919, tamed a leopard and a wild elephant in the jungles of Sri Lanka by radiating energy of loving kindness towards them.

Metta Bhavna is also practised to purify our mind of defilements like anger, jealousy, hatred and self-pity. We cannot stop the suffering of the world. We can only stop it in our mind, because we know our minds and we generate anger, hatred, and jealousy in our own mind. The only way we can still our minds is by practising Metta Bhavna.

Western scientists have found that 80 per cent of our illnesses such as rash, diabetes, backache and heart attacks are due largely to defilements caused in the mind. Psychiatrists have found that though there is temporary relief for these illnesses through medication, they recur because the cause remains within our minds.

Frequent anger and hatred produce a chemical which reduces our immunity to illnesses. When we lose our kind thoughts and develop anger and hatred, immunity falls. Due to frequent negative thoughts the mucus membrane in the stomach dries up, hormones are activated and excess pepsin enzyme is released into the stomach.

    The result? Ulcers.

Our brain is hardly two per cent of our body size. But it uses 20 per cent of oxygen. Negative emotions have been found to use up more blood and frequent anger and hatred cause psychological ageing. Practice of meditation of loving-kindness can work wonders. British scientists have proved that meditation for loving kindness restores the chemical balance in the body and even cholesterol levels fall.

  • May I be filled with loving-kindess
    May I be well
May I be peaceful and at ease
    May I be happy

    Our emotions are choices.

We aren’t just passive beings whose emotions spring up purely because of what happens to us. Instead, we can make choices about how we react and feel to what goes on around us. This is incredibly empowering. We don’t have to feel slaves to our emotions – we can learn to choose the emotions that are best for us.
Metta practice thus helps us get into the habit of choosing loving-kindness. This loving-kindness is special, in that it is unconditional. It is not dependent on how others behave, or what we hope to get in return. It just is. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

  • OMSAIRAM!Dear Subha.........I guess firstly we need Guru's grace to have Metta Bhavana...our Sai baba's grace and blessings...

when we meet with people or animals, we can mentally have thoughts of metta. These thoughts of metta, even though they may be only thoughts for a start, play a very important part. We know people disagree even on the most insignificant things. Many strained relations and enmity can be dissolved if we can just forgive and overlook the past and start anew. Very often it may be just "tension in the air" which we cannot pinpoint. Metta can create the mental atmosphere conducive to goodwill as well as spark off whatever good speech and actions that follow.

So besides mental action, we also have to express it in words or other forms of communications to others. Speaking gently, with kindness, truthfulness and for the benefit of others are elements of right speech.

Actions of metta are actions such as lending help materially or spiritually, giving medical and nursing attention to the elderly or kindness for animals, courtesy, hospitality, etc.

Therefore metta in daily life is more active and expressive in nature. In families and offices where there is frequent metta shown, it becomes a house or dwelling that is truly happy.

  • Thanks, Dipika.

As for what will be suitable for the best outcome, we would have to exercise wisdom.

So another important part is to exercise metta with wisdom.

when to and when not to use metta. If we use it, how much and in what way.

    Good post Dipika.

    Sai bless us all.
