Meditation for disturbed mind, Any ideas please .....

  • I am really struggling with switching my mind off and concentrating. I have a very busy and disturbed mind right now and although the response may be to sort out the issues which are affecting me, that’s not so easy to do. The result is that whenever for meditation I sit, lay or do whatever and try to clear my mind, all the other stuff bombards me at the same time. I try to relax myself by imagining I was either sitting all alone in the forest or under the sea. I tried with soothing music and imagining myself sitting in front of sai, too.

But, since yesterday, when a thought comes in I acknowledged it rather than try to block it, and re focus on the breath instead. This worked for me a little.

I seem to have lost my earlier ability on meditation and wish very much to get it back again.

Can I clarify what I am asking for ideas on? I am not looking for pointers in how to meditate it, although it’s all intermingled. I am specifically asking for ideas as to how to 'firewall' your mind against the random thoughts that keep on interfering, even for a short period so that you can achieve the state you wish to achieve.

This is holding me back a lot. Any ideas please friends ...   :)

    Love & Light  :)
    Be blessed!
    Om Sai Ram!

  • Dear ShAivI,

Answer of your question in one word:

    “Awareness”

What I can read out of your words, you seems to be confused between Tapa and Dhyan. In Tapa Mind is conditioned to be silent or under control, Mind to be zero or to have only thoughts that spirits allows, here spirit rules the mind and brain. Usually Yogis or Sadhak practice Tapa, as it is very difficult for ordinary humans, mind cannot be controlled forcefully.

Meditation is simply to have focus on object or task with single mind/thought at a time. It is being aware to what you are doing, If you get mastery in this, 90% of your problem will be sorted out straightway, in simple language If one is in kitchen, He should concentrate only on cooking and not any TV Serial, If taking bath one should enjoy bathing, But mind remain in office, In office mind keep on wondering on different concerns and not on the project in hand. If one become so efficient to concentrate on task in hand, and remain in present free from Past Burdens or Future dreams, Life would be much better.

So again as per my experience it is only “Awareness” or Awakening the spirit, It will also reveal what is reality and keep mind refresh, as mind will not lose its energy in unnecessary future thoughts. (Don’t confuse with planning of future).

You said not to discuss meditation technique, But Just for the benefit of other brothers and sisters who are just in the way to begin their journey on this path. I’d like to share some tips out of my experience and knowledge:

    1. Just count your step when ever walk.

    2. Never get into any sort of gossips when ever visit any religious place, instead sit quietly, at
least visit some times when there is less crowd, e.g. Sai Temple on any working day other than Thursday. (If You are regular visitor on Thursday then addition to that day).

    3. If possible use Tratak, Candle – Moon – Sun – Water as per level of practice, On still objects and Later Moving Objects.

    4. Practice Visualization, Imagine and  Visualize yourself at a particular place in particular dress and advance in this technique think about Baba in shirdi in period near 1910’s or if you read Sai satcharitra, Feel your presence in those Leelas.

    5. Observe the pattern of thoughts, In a day at a particular time emotion for Love and harmony arise in mind, Some time it is hatred, some times self-destruction, Come out from auto-pilot stage, Start thinking at your own will, Don’t be on mercy of mind. Mind can never be kept vacated for long unless you have great practice, So you have to replace thoughts, negative to positive!

I also recommend a Book “Dhyan Diksha” by Sirshree. This is beautiful, simple yet very useful book on meditation.

Baba Sai’s Path is always beautiful and so simple, But We have become habitual of making life complicated that to live a simple life at our own, We find so difficult! We depend on others for our happiness while we only have key of happiness!

This is what I can Say, But this is just a drop in the sea, So would request other learnt member to share their experiences so that we can go further or improve some areas.

  • Just adding:

If One find very difficult to control on thoughts, which keep on wondering specially when they need to concentrate on study or any special project, They must practice Gyan Mudra*. This is very useful to make mind stable and to increase power to focus on single point.

*Gyan Mudra – A Posture Thumb and index fingers touch at tips, usually Used in prayers or meditation. (Use Google to know more)
