Post by: ShAivI on February 20, 2013, 01:08:55 AM

OM SAI RAM!!!

Mathematics of spirituality is that 2 + 1 = 0.
Did you get it?
Think about it! When the body and mind, these two merge with the One spirit,
then nothing remains to be known anymore.
That is what it is!

OM SAI RAM!!!

Life has five dimensions of five senses. There is one more dimension,
and that is feeling - feeling the Presence. Light cannot be heard,
it has to be seen through the eyes. Sound cannot be seen, it has
to be heard by the ears. Likewise, Presence has to be felt by the
heart. Human life is enriched only when we can live this sixth sense
of existence!

OM SAI RAM!!!

Make your smile cheaper and anger expensive.
Have a sense of humour.
You are endowed with certain naughtiness as a child.
Keep it alive.
Humour will grease all tough situations.
One who has humour can sail through any conflict.
Humour is the buffer that saves you from humiliation.
Humour is not just words;
it is the lightness of your being.

OM SAI RAM!!!

What is Enlightenment? Living from a depth of life,
not getting stressed in any situation, to be able to influence
circumstances, rather than get influenced by them. If you could
smile from the depth of your heart, somewhere deep inside of you...
Because our very nature is enlightenment, that is why human and
divine are not two things. Stress is the outermost cover, the plastic
around the apple. Human is the outer skin and divine is the pulp inside.

When you want to do something, look at your strength.
weakness is that you start looking at others' strengths!
When you are running, you can only look at the track below,
not at who's next to you. Like a horse with blinders,
you just look at your path and let anybody do whatever he/she wants..

If you are faced with someone who knows more than you,
be like a child and keep your ears and eyes open for learning.
If you are faced with someone who knows less than you, be humble
and strive to make them as good as or better than you.
Communicate with a person of your age group like you are his/her
best friend. When you are centered, you become a powerful communicator.

Sorrow simply means that viveka (discrimination) is overshadowed.
Viveka means knowing that everything is changing.
Your body, your emotions, the people around you and the
world - everything is changing. Time and again you have to
awaken to this reality. You are often fearful of change. You know
there is a need for change to improve your life, but you feel secure
in the old pattern. So, use your intelligence and have the courage
to implement changes whenever it is necessary.

OM SAI RAM!!!

Know that humiliation does not weaken you, it strengthens you.
The more egoistic you are, the more humiliation you feel.
When you are childlike and have a greater sense of kinship,
you do not feel humiliated. When you are steeped in love
with the Existence, with the Divine, nothing whatsoever
can humiliate you.

OM SAI RAM!!!

First of all connect to yourself. When you go deep in yourself
and let go of all the anxiety and know that you are loved by
the universe, you get inner strength. The universe loves you,
air loves you, space loves you, the sun and moon love you.
So you are surrounded by that energy of love and you’ll just
melt in meditation and that is what gives that inner strength;
so solid, child like again. Free from inhibitions, free from
worries, being natural!

Every human being is a book in himself/herself - a novel.
In a library we get all kinds of books.
The whole world is a library.
There is only One Author for all these books
and He is flooding the market! Only a few, who are awake,
see that these are all stories and rejoice. And you are one
of those few. If you think you are not, become one right away.
You have a lifelong membership in this library.

OM SAI RAM!!!

Authenticity and skillfulness appear to be contradictory,
but in fact they are complementary. Your intentions need
to be authentic and your actions need to be skillful. Skill is
required only when authenticity cannot have its way.
Yet skill without authenticity makes you shallow. If you
try to be authentic in your action but manipulative in your
mind, that is when mistakes happen. Actions can never
be perfect but our intentions can be perfect.

People take pride in fighting for their rights. This is
an ignorant pride. Asserting your rights makes you
isolated and poor. Courageous people give away their
rights. The degree to which you can give away your rights
indicates your freedom, your strength. Only those who
have rights can give them away! Demanding does not really
bring rights to you and giving does not really take them away.
Recognize that no one can take away your rights - that is freedom.

Despite what you may think, ego is not entirely bad.
There is a positive aspect to it. Ego drives you to do work.
A person will do a job either out of compassion or out of ego,
and most of the work in society is done out of ego. Having
said that, ego is also separateness and non-belongingness.
It desires to prove and possess and is the shadow of doership.
In itself, ego is neither good or bad. It simply is what it is.

If you recognize that you have ego, don't try to get rid of it,
just keep it in your pocket. If you try to get rid of it, that
itself will become the cause for a bigger ego trip. The only
antidote for ego is being natural. You want to get rid of your
ego because it is bothering you more than it is bothering others.
So if you find that there is ego in you, let it be.
We will not meddle with it. If it comes, let it come

There are some who justify their actions all the time,
and some who find fault with themselves all the time.
Both will create a sort of imbalance. Take a middle path,
where you can look into your actions to see how you can
improve and at the same time, look forward. See what you
want to do, move forward and drop the past. Don't go on
doing a post-mortem of the past all the time.

"Fundamentally, there are only two types of spiritual
processes in the world - the path of Samadhi and the
path of Pragna. Pragna means the path of awareness;
Samadhi means the path of dissolution.”

“If you are in Samyama, the body will be there, mind will
be there, world will be there but you are not part of all these
three things. If you are free from these three things, there
can be no suffering. If you are in the body, body can suffer,
if you are in the mind, mind can suffer, if you are in the world,
world can make you suffer. If you are not in any of these three
things, you are outside of these three things, this is your
Mukthi - That is the aim of Samyama. It is the height of awareness,
where your witnessing has separated everything".

OM SAI RAM!!!

Journey from 'Here' to 'Here!'

God-realization (tattva-gyana) is independent of senses or organs of perception
(karana-nirapeksha)—for, it is realized by one’s own self through the intense
longing of one’s own self. It is not a matter of ‘creating’ something new; it is a
matter of ‘discovering’ something which is already there. To create or produce
something new, efforts are required. But to discover something which is already
there, one only has to ‘turn and look towards it’ and ‘recognize’ it as such.

For, if realization of God also depended on creating something new, then it will
also be like every other ‘object’ that is created and will be subject to the six
“modifications,’ viz., birth, change, death, etc. Besides, all actions take place
within the sphere of material nature (Prakriti). They have a beginning and an
end; so their results too are bound to have a beginning and an end. How can
then a beginningless and endless God be realized through actions which have
a beginning and an end? Thus, God-realization is a matter of ‘recognizing’
what ‘IS,’ a matter of attaining the ever-attained (praapt ki praapti).
It is journey from ‘here’ to ‘here.’

OM SAI RAM!!!

The Spiritual Plenitude!

There is no bliss greater than the bliss experienced by the aspirant-meditator
(Dhyanyogi) in which he beholds the Self through the self and rejoices in the
Self. This bliss is not dependent upon the senses, and, in this bliss, the intellect
remains fully awake (and alert). It means that this bliss (sukha) is utterly distinct
from Sattvika, Rajasika and Tamasika sukha—all three types of happiness.
* Established in such bliss, the Dhyanyogi never deviates from it.

To have attained this bliss is the touchstone (litmus test) of all spiritual
practices—a sure proof of Spiritual Plenitude. (Bhagavad Gita 6.20-21+)

* Prakriti or Primordial Nature is constituted of three modes or qualities or
Gunas: Sattva (equilibrium or purity or goodness), Rajas (passion or activity),
and Tamas (dullness or inertia). The ‘three types of happiness’ referred to
here signify the three different types of pleasures arising from these gunas.’

Story of Vedanta!

Once in a tree there were two birds, one at the upper branch, serene,
majestic and divine, and the other at a lower branch, restlessly pecking fruits,
sometimes sweet sometimes bitter. Every time, when the restless bird ate a
bitter fruit, it looked at the upper bird and climbed a branch up. This occurred
a number of times and eventually the bird reached the topmost branch. There
it was not able to differentiate itself from the divine bird, and then it learned
that there was only one bird in the tree, the upper bird, which is described as
divine, the real form of the other restless bird. This is the thought of Vedanta.
The fruits in the story are Karma, the restless bird denotes a human soul,
and the majestic bird denotes the Absolute.

One of the concrete ways of determining whether one is on the right path
or not is to ask oneself, from time to time, if one's saadhana (spiritual practice)
is making one "less" self-centered or "more" self-centered. The wise, according
to the Gita, work naturally for the good of the all: sarva bhuta hitae ratah.
In the Gita, at two places only, this blessed pharse "sarva bhuta hitae ratah"
occurs: 5.25 and 12.4; in both the contexts the Lord has adored such people
who are naturally immersed in the welfare of the world with such adjectives:
'They attain Brahma-Nirvanam (5.25) and they verily come to Me (12.4)!
Selfless service, then, is both the path and the goal!

If you cannot behold Brahman in all beings, try to behold him
in at least a Self-realized person. Seek refuge in Him, whose
heart is full of Supreme bliss. His mere glance will kindle the possibility
of your awakening into Supreme Bliss. Just as X-rays penetrate
the outer layers of clothes, skin, soft tissues and muscles to take
the photograph of Bones, the glance of a Self-realized Saint penetrates
through the different layers of your false identification with the body
that lie in the chitta enabling you to see the indwelling God. This in
effect makes it easy for you to penetrate through those layers and
behold God within. Let your Chitta be cleansed by the glance of such
a Saint. Sit before him without blinking your eyes, fill your heart with
devotional love, and mind with peace; only then will His benign glance
exercise its effect on your chitta.

The great sage, Swami Ramsukhdasji, at the ripe age of 103 years,
was asked by a seeker to distill the essence of his findings in the
spiritual realm. This unassuming saint, who had spent over 90 years
pondering over the deep import of every single word of the Bhagavad Gita,
quite simply said, “Parr’ashrey chhod do, aur prishramm chhod do.” That is,
give up relying on ‘the other’ and give up vain (spiritual) efforts/practices.
That is, take refuge only in the Divine and find eternal peace - param-vishraam.

In one word, sharanagatti or surrender (to the Divine Will). This is the true
import of the most important shloka in the entire Bhagavad Gita! (BG 18.66)

... This surrender happens through the workings of the Divine Grace and
not through our puny spiritual efforts...

Prayer!

It is impossible for human beings like us to completely understand God,
the Omnipresent, Omnipotent and the Master of Time. It might not be feasible
to see Him or listen to His words. But the occasions that confirm God's presence
are many, as "He is found wherever we search for Him". The electrical power
that we very often use in our daily life is not visible to the naked eyes. Just
because of its invisibility if we say that electricity does not exist, we miss its
utility. To know its existence, we should press the right switch which allows
the flow of electricity. The power of energy will reach us in the form of light,
fire, sound or picture.

Likewise, to feel the presence of God dwelling everywhere, there is a switch
called 'prayer'. If we press the switch of prayer, our mind gets lighted. The
All-Pervading God sheds His light on the hearts that pray to Him. It is God
who illuminates our intellect. It is enough, if we remember the truth and
pray to Baba, the Ocean of Ever-New Bliss. He would make our life spiritually
enlightened. The proper arrangement of positive and negative wires provide
the light. There is no use of pressing the switch when the concealed wires
are not properly set. Therefore, throughout the process of prayer, our
hearts and mind should be enveloped by the Divine Love. Only then,
our life becomes brighter with the blessings of Baba.

People become our enemies even when we have not done any wrong to them.
Similarly, we do not do any special favors for some people, yet they become our
close friends. All these happenings run by some law that we don’t know. We
just can’t say when someone’s feelings towards us will change and whether they
will be in our favor or not. That is why we should place absolute faith on our Self,
on God, and not on friendship and enmity. This does not mean you distance yourself
from your friends, or that you stop making new friends. Friendliness and love should
be in our very nature. Interact with everyone around and at the same time be
centered from within.

OM SAI RAM!!!

Judgements:

Though you have heard "Don't judge", judgement comes unavoidably
in day-to-day life. By the actions and behaviour of people, you either
approve or disapprove. But always remember that everything is changing,
do not hold on to the judgement. Otherwise your judgement gets solidified
like a rock. It brings misery for you and for others.

If judgements are lighter, like air, like a breeze, they bring in fragrance,
then move away. Or they could bring a foul smell, then move away.
But they should not stay forever.

Judgements are so subtle that you are not even aware of their existence.
Only when you are full of love and compassion, can you ever be free
from all judgements.

Yet the world cannot move without judgements. Until you judge something
as good or bad, you cannot do any action. You want to buy only good apples
in the market. If someone lies to you ten times, the next time he speaks
it could also be a lie - a judgement happens automatically.

See the possibility that people and things can change at any time and don’t hold
on to judgements.

You never know
How and when
The existence will start
Using you for its purpose

You never know
How and when
You will be filled with abundance
And you will start raining
Quenching the thirst of many

You never know
How and when
You will be full of
Fruits and shade
And travellers will take
Shelter and food from you

You never know
How and when
You will be full with
Love and light
And you will start spreading
The fragrance of beauty to everyone

You never know
How and when.... Really !.

Q: Can you pull me out of depression that I am facing?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
There is no way you are in satsang and you are depressed.
See sometimes this is what happens when you go to psychologists.
They give you an idea that you are depressed.
And then you put this idea into your mind,
 ‘oh! I am depressed!’
So you are reaffirming something which is not a permanent thing.

No mental state is a permanent state.
So you are trying to reinforce and reaffirm, ‘I am depressed’
even when you are not. You start saying ‘yes, I am depressed’.

This is the danger when people who do not know anything about the mind,
about the psyche and about meditation or consciousness,
give advice in the name of psychology. It is such a miserable thing.

I have seen relationships between parents and children get spoiled
by psychologists and psychiatrists. A child had such a good relationship
with his parents but after some consultation or counseling with the
psychologists, something happened, and he started hating his
own parents.

There was a businessman here at the ashram for the past one and
a half months. He came all the way from Paris. This person had a
sleeping disorder. He was given so many medications. Usually for
sleep doctors give a dose of ten milligrams; this man was taking
a hundred and fifty milligrams. Ten times the normal dose of the
medicine. He looked like a zombie and kept having panic attacks
and his whole system was bad.

I told him, ‘now, I want to take away all your medications.’

We took away his medications and he said, ‘but, I don’t sleep’.
Our doctors attended to him, all our teachers attended to him.
He was snoring loudly and when you snore loudly, it means
you are sleeping.

After snoring for four hours he wakes up and says, ‘I did not sleep.
I have a sleeping problem.’ The doctors who attended to him said,
‘Guruji, he snored so loud!’ But this gentleman had this idea,
I have sleeping disorder so I have to take this medication.
Without this medication I cannot sleep.

Sometimes, you have this idea, whatever doctors say is absolute truth.
Like the placebo effect. Doctor says, ‘take this tablet and you’ll be fine’,
and you take a sugar pill and say, ‘ah! This is very effective’.
A sugar pill can take away your headache.

If the doctor tells you, ‘you suffer from deep depression’, you take it in
your mind and in your heart. You say, ‘I suffer from depression’.
Your mind is like a river, it is changing all the time.

That is what Lord Buddha said, ‘your mind is like a river’.

All the ancient people who studied consciousness have said,
‘you can’t take a dip in the same river twice’. So, don’t believe you are
the same person. Your mind is changing all the time.

Be in the present moment, now! Now! Now!

Bury the past and move on. Where is the depression?
Your depression is because you are hanging onto the past or
you are over-ambitious. You have the capability to manage a
school but you want to become the Prime Minister of the country.
Then depression comes when you feel you cannot achieve it.

Don’t hang on to the past or don’t be too feverish or over-ambitious about the future.

OM SAI RAM!!!

Q: How do people who do wrong things rise up in life?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
You know, when you see people who do wrong things rising up, you lose your courage,
your conviction, your morality; you lose your ground and you feel broken.

That’s when you need to remind yourself that they are only rising up to fall back down.
Bad elements need a fall, that’s their final destination.

But even to fall you need to rise a little higher, only then do you really get broken.
So they raise to get a big fall. If you are convinced of this reality, then nothing
whatsoever can touch you; no event can pull you down, no event can demoralize you,
no nervous breakdown can happen, nor will you ever have heart breaks.
Your morale becomes very strong with this conviction.

See, every event creates some knowledge and some emotions.
Often events have some lessons to teach you, and also create along with it
some emotion. But what do we normally do? We don’t learn from the events at all,
but we carry forward the emotion. And the emotion keeps haunting us,
like a scar or a craving.

When knowledge is not learnt, you are left with a bag of emotions.
Be it positive or negative, it is going to bother you in the present and in the future.

The stronger the craving for a pleasurable experience, the more painful
it will be in the present. This is because the pleasurable experience has created
an intense craving in you which carries over to the present and keeps you in a
bigger mess. Am I making the point clear? For example, if you have gone through a
break-up which was intensely painful, that is because the pleasure in the relationship
had been equally intense, which is why it was so painful. It is the craving
(for that pleasurable experience) that made it so painful, leaving you in the
present moment with only a bag of emotions.

Now what does a wise one do? He takes forward the lessons from the past and
leaves behind the emotions in the past. If someone has cheated you, then learn
the lesson from the experience. What did you do that someone could cheat you.
How unintelligent were you that you allowed someone to cheat you. Just learn the
lesson instead of carrying anger, frustration and hatred towards the other.

Most of us, instead of learning the lesson, we carry the emotions of the past.
It is not an intelligent thing to do. The intelligent thing to do is to carry the lesson
and drop the emotion so that you can keep your smile genuine, unblemished and
untouched by the event. What do you say? You can keep your spirits high, come what may.
Now!! Now!! (Snapping his fingers indicating ‘Be in the present moment’).

Life is always a mixture of pleasant and unpleasant things; things which you like
and things which you don’t like. Life is a mixture of this.

Q: We often hear you say: "think of God." But surely God is unthinkable and formless.
What can be thought of must have name and form and therefore cannot be God?

Anandamayi Ma:

Yes, without doubt, He is beyond thought, form and description,
and yet I say: "think of Him!"

Why ?

Since you are identified with the ego, since you think you are the doer,
since you say: "I can do this and that," and since you get angry, greedy,
and so forth, you therefore have to apply your "I-ness" to the thought of Him.

True, He is formless, nameless, immutable, unfathomable.

All the same He has come to you in the form of the Eternal Sound or the
descent of God in the form of the Word, or in the form of an Avatar.
These also are only He Himself and consequently, if you abide by His name
and contemplate His form, the veil which is your "I" will wear out and then He,
who is beyond form and thought, will shine forth.

Q:  In Shiva Purana it is said that anyone who worships Lord Shiva is freed from all sins.
Does this mean that corruption begins at the top?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

No! Do you know what corruption is?

Corruption is doing that which you don’t wish to be done to you or to your kith and kin.
You cannot link pooja (here meaning worshipping Lord Shiva) and corruption.

Pooja is a feeling that comes to you out of fullness. Like when a guest comes
to your house, you come to the door and receive them. If someone very dear
to you is coming to see you, don’t you rush to the train station or the airport
to receive them?

Does it come out of a feeling of compulsion?

You can tell them to call a taxi, but instead you take your vehicle to go and receive them.

Why do you do that?

What is that feeling?

It cannot be called corruption.
So pooja means that which comes out of fullness.

In Puranas, many things are written. I’m not an advocate of all the Puranas.
Many of them are a means of expression. In fact, the word Purana means
a new way of expressing. The Hindi Purana and Sanskrit Purana have totally
opposite meanings. In Hindi, Purana means old, and in Sanskrit Purana means
very new or modern; it means a different way of expression. Don’t call that
as a corruption.

God is not so stupid that He waits for you to break a coconut to give you a boon!

All the poojas you do are to express your fullness, not to please God.
I think this is a very wrong concept in the world.

We think we do things to please God; this is wrong understanding.
People fast for many days so that they can please God.
You fast to purify your body; you don’t have to fast to please God.
This is a wrong understanding.

How To Effectively `Kill' Your Enemy?

Sri Avadoot Baba :

Are you stressed at work?
Are you tired after a day's work?
Is your work mediocre?

Krishna's doctrine of action converts mediocrity to excellence,
drudgery to revelry , indignation to inspiration. Bhagwad Gita
chapter 3 prescribes the method by which the mind remains
serene while the body acts intensely .

Action is a given. The quality of action is determined by the intention,
the motive. Perform niyatam karma, obligatory action, the highest quality
of action. Reduce kamya karma, desire driven action, which can take
you away from your goal.

Keep away from nishiddha karma, actions prohibited by your conscience.
As long as you remain focussed on duty the mind is calm, intellect sharp
and action brilliant. As desires mount the mind gets agitated and action
becomes flawed. When desires outstrip your resources you perform dangerous
actions that your conscience revolts against.

Krishna underscores the importance of yajna (sacrifice), actions dedicated
to a higher ideal. He says, when the Creator made the human being
He gave him the unique capacity of sacrifice and said,
“With sacrifice may you prosper. Let it be the fulfiller of all your desires.“

It is impossible to succeed if you do not act in a spirit of service and sacrifice.
Yet we are all trying to prosper through selfish pursuits!

He then details three distinct types of people.

The lowest, the tamasika helps himself to the benefits endowed by society
without repaying; he is a thief.

The rajasika acts for selfish ends but the result is stress and mental agitation.
He cooks, says Krishna, but eats sin.

The sattvika works in a spirit of sacrifice for a higher ideal.
He enjoys the fruit of sacrifice and evolves to the
highest goal of Enlightenment.

Identify your svadharma, inner calling, core interest.

In the area of your svadharma fix a goal that is beyond your selfish interests.
Thought of self is the greatest barrier to excellence. There is perfection in
everyone. All you have to do is get yourself out of the way your ego, desire,
selfishness!

The higher ideal helps you tap into sources of energy you never
thought you had. You get creative. And you are exhilarated at work.

Krishna then gives the ingredients of perfect action.

The intellect directs all thoughts to the chosen ideal, the mind feels for the
goal and the body acts dynamically .This creates energy which tends to
dissipate into the unproductive avenues of past worry , future anxiety and
present frenzy .

The intellect plugs this wasteful dissipation. Follow this formula
to achieve success, happiness and spiritual evolution.

Arjuna asks What takes me away from my path and makes me do things
I ought not to do?

Krishna answers - It is desire, it is anger, born of the quality of rajas,
passion. Desire comes in three shades sattva purity , rajas passion
and tamas ignorance.

Desire is your greatest enemy . It devours you and causes a great deal of
mental agitation and stress. It is unquenchable, like fire.

Trying to satisfy desire by fulfilling it is like trying to extinguish fire with fuel!

Moreover, it mutates into other far more destructive forms like greed, delusion,
envy and arrogance.

Yet everyone is fanning desire - individuals, organisations as well as nations.

Rise to a higher desire, the lower will lose its hold over you. And the object of
desire will come to you unsought.

Krishna concludes with a highly inspiring message:

“Kill the formidable enemy in the form of desire by rising to the highest desire,
that of Self-realisation.

Q:  I am centered on the Divine, yet there is restlessness,
though on the outside everything seems perfect.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

In every seeker’s life there comes a time when the heart
is at unease, and there is restlessness.

In the West, it is known as the “dark day of the soul”.

There comes a time when satvik shakti (positive energy)
is less and rajogun and tamogun are high, that leads to the
restlessness. There are three kinds of taap (penance)
and one such taap is known as adhyatmic taap (spiritual misery).
Yet it is for a short while.

Therefore satsang is very important, especially when you
don’t feel like doing it.

Once in twelve years a lack in spirituality comes up. There will
arise a doubt on the self, the path and the Guru. This is what
the Scriptures say.

Therefore the Kumbh festival takes place once in twelve years
and all the saints get together to clear all their sins.
This tradition is very old. A place where seekers
do satsang and where Vedas are recited – kalyuga never
comes there.

Q:  Gurudev, if one is on the path for several years,
and then suddenly a doubt comes about something after a long time,
and the path does not appear very charming anymore,
what should one do then?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

That is the time when you need to hold on to your faith.
Moments of doubt are like clouds.
The clouds do come, but they come and disappear.
If you do not cooperate or engage with them, they will simply come and go.

If you shake hands with them and flow with them,
then it will take a longer time to overcome them.
Truth will always stand out and win in the end.

Doubts may come, and this is quite possible because of the
company that we keep.

Someone may tell you, 'Oh, you know, so-and-so person does so
much meditation, still he became sick', etc.

What do they mean?
They think that if someone who is doing Yoga and meditation
fell sick, then what is the point of you doing all that?

It is not because of meditation that the person became sick.
He must have done some other things which would have brought him
this sickness. It could also be because of his Karma.

The theory of Karma is so deep and unfathomable that you cannot think of
understanding it all in a linear manner. Someone may have lived a very good life
but may face a lot of difficulties towards the end of their life.

Good action will always give only good results. A mango tree will only give
mango fruits. It will not give you bitter neem fruits. It is the law of Nature.

So when doubts come, let them step in and go away by themselves.
You keep moving forward.

A member of a well known Indian family, who had distinguished herself
by devoting her life to social service, came for SRI MA’s darsana and asked:
"Does the capacity to meditate come by practice in this life,
or is it an aptitude acquired in former births ?"

Anandamayi Ma:

It may be the result of either of the two, or of both combined.
Meditation should be practiced every day of one’s life.

Look, what is there in this world? Absolutely nothing that is lasting;
therefore direct your longing towards the Eternal. Pray that the work
done through you, His instrument, may be pure. In every action
remember Him. The purer your thinking, the finer will be your work.
In this world you get a thing, and by tomorrow it may be gone.
This is why your life should be spent in a spirit of service; feel that
the Lord is accepting services from you in whatever you do. If you
desire peace you must cherish the thought of Him.

Q: Why is it so that we don’t feel same for a person all the time?
Sometimes we are angry with the same person whom we love.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

You know we go through all different types of emotions.
We like somebody and the same person we dislike.
We trust somebody and same person we start doubting
and so all these mixed emotions keep rising and falling
in our mind. Don’t be scared. All these emotions make
you strong somewhere deep inside. Somewhere you will
come out a very powerful human being. When you are
aware that all these moving emotions are just a temporary
phase, and that you are much bigger than this, you become
strong and centered. Don’t get stuck in any of these emotions

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

What is destroying this world? It’s the greed, jealousy,
hatred, narrow mindedness, selfishness, and all these
negative emotions and qualities which are destroying
the world, right? Because of greed of few people,
anger and hatred of few people, lack of awareness,
lack of understanding or misunderstanding and narrow

How can these negative emotions be overcome?
Is there a way? Yes, SPIRITUALITY. It is only spirituality

selfishness into compassion. It is only spirituality that can save
the mind of the people, isn’t it so?

Q: There are many things in my life which I think are not ok.
I don’t know what to do about these things.?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

When you say, ‘It’s not ok, it’s not ok’, the seed of ‘not ok’ is not
letting your mind to relax. When do you go to bed? When everything
is ok, and when there is comfort. When you are hanging on to the
discomfort, how can you ever be comfortable? You have to accept things
as they are.

‘It’s not ok, it’s not ok’ keeps you all outside. Those imperfections are
there for a cause or purpose. It is going to be ok, it will take some time.
Things are ok the way they are now, They will be ok in the future Whatever
happened in the past was ok. When you understand this, you relax and in
that relaxation you can meditate.

When you want to retire, its nivriti but when you want to come out
(of rest) its pravritti. Then you can act. When you are tired but you are
hanging on to what is not ok - then you cannot retire. When you have to
chill out, what do you say?

‘Everything is perfect,’ otherwise you can’t chill, you can’t act! It is neither
pravritti, nor nivriti. Dhyan yoga is nivriti, Karma yoga is pravritti.
Most people are hanging onto the ‘not ok’ and are unable to relax, to enjoy life,
to chill, to be creative. They are holding onto the seed of ‘not ok’.

That person, this situation, the government, the administration - everything
is not ok. Then it comes to you - I am not ok. Subtly, it reflects on you that
you are not OK. Then you don't like that feeling, and to cover that up, you
make up many justifications and the mind is all confused. If tamogun is too
much, you don't know the pravritti or the nivriti. When there is Satva,
then we know what to act, when to act, whether to act or not. When Rajogun
prevails then its half way through - you regret and act. Many of us act and then
 we regret.

Mother scolds her child, regrets it and then becomes nice. In Satva,
you don't regret, you retire and relax, there is clarity. In Rajogun, there
is confusion and chaos. In Tamogun, there is total inertia and lethargy.
There is no strict border between the three gunas. It is very fluid,
one flows into another.

What is action in inaction and inaction in action??

Sri Avadoot Baba :

It is very clear. This is the whole secret.

When you are acting with hundred percent attention, something in you tells,
‘I am not doing it, I am not acting. It is just happening'. How many of you have
had this experience? (Many in the audience raise their hands). This is seeing
inaction in action.

Sometimes you get angry, or you behave in some manner and you feel that
you are not doing it, it is happening. Someone comes in front of you and you
just blow up, knowing very well that you are not doing it purposely. Something
in that person triggers something in you, and you start behaving like that.
How many of you have has this experience? (Many raise hands). You wonder,
‘My God, I never wanted to do this!’ That is seeing inaction in action.

You act because that person had to get those words, or that karma from you.
So he just pulled out those words from you, and you never really wanted to
say it. That incident had to happen and it was a karma. This is a little higher
knowledge.

Now don’t try to apply this knowledge to every mistake you do. You yell
at somebody and say, ‘I didn’t mean it. It was karmic and you had to get it,
so I had to yell!’ This is misuse of knowledge. Don’t do that. Don’t misuse
knowledge in that sense.

Sometimes without your wanting to do an act, you do it. You don't want
to do it, but you feel helpless, and you are just watching the act happening.

You see that you are not doing it, yet an action is happening, this is seeing inaction
in action. You are sitting with eyes closed and meditating. You are not doing anything,
yet the vibration that you are generating from within you is changing the world.
This is action in inaction.

You’re sitting and meditating, you’re spreading the waves of compassion,
waves of pure love and devotion, waves of harmony, and that harmony is hitting
others and it is changing their mind-set, it is changing the atmosphere, it is removing
the negativity, it is making things more positive. You’re giving blessing to people.
With your blessing things are changing. This is action in inaction. You sit in samadhi,
you sit in deep meditation, that samadhi is definitely creating a lot of action in the
world. That is action in inaction.

This is very difficult to explain. I have made an effort to explain it with whatever
little examples.

and as identical with the Self.
What does the Heart exactly signify ?"

Sri Ramana Maharshi :

Call it by any name, God, Self,
the Heart or the seat of consciousness, it is all the same.
The point to be grasped is this,
that Heart means the very core of one's being,
the centre, without which there is nothing whatever.
The Heart is not physical, it is spiritual.
Hridayam equals hrit plus ayam;
it means `this is the centre'.
It is that from which thoughts arise,
on which they subsist and where they are resolved.
The thoughts are the content of the mind
and they shape the universe.
The Heart is the centre of all.
That from which beings come into existence is said
to be Brahman in the Upanishads.
That is the Heart.
Brahman is the Heart.

Q: How can I trust anybody?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

Actually, you don’t trust yourself. If you trust yourself, you can trust anybody.
I am not asking you to be naive; be intelligent, be sharp, be alert, and understand people
from a bigger perspective.

When you’re too emotional, you fail to see things as they are.
Why do you have this issue of trust?
It is because you get into an imbalanced emotional outburst or outrage.
You don’t see things as they are.

There is a fine balance between enriched emotion and a sharp intellect,
and that is what yoga is all about. When it comes to perception,
you have to have that gentle enriched emotion, a sharp intellect,
and on top of this, allow your intuition to work.

Q: Does satsang mean 'association with jnanis',
    or
can it also mean 'association with good people' ?

Annamalai Swami:

The real Sat, which is being, is within you. You associate with
it and get satsang every time you turn your attention towards it.
You do not need a jnani for such satsang. You can get it anywhere.

On the other hand, worldly people who are living near jnanis are
often not getting satsang because they are not tuning in to the
jnanis Sat.

Some people who live near saints are just like little insects
called 'unni' (cattle tick) which live on the udders of cows.
They drink the blood there instead of the milk. Some people
who were physically associated with Bhagavan ignored his
teachings and failed to make contact with the grace he was
radiating. They worked and ate at the ashram, but they got
little benefit from being there. These people were not having
satsang, they were just human unni.

There was a group of brahmins who were associated with Bhagavan
who did not subscribe to the advaitic view, 'All is Brahman.
All is the Self.' In those days we used to read a lot from the
Ribhu Gita, a text which repeatedly says 'All is Brahman’.

These brahmins refused to join in because they didn't agree
with the philosophy. 'Where is this Brahman you are talking about?'
they would say. 'How can it be everything? How can you go on
chanting "All is Brahman" when that is not your experience?
Maybe these teachings are useful for people like Bhagavan,
why should people like us parrot these statements endiessly?’
Bhagavan himself encouraged us to recite this text regularly.

He said that constant and frequent repetition led to samadhi. In
giving us this instruction Bhagavan was giving us a method of
experiencing some of the sat that was his real nature. In effect
he was offering us a highly effective form of satsang. But these
brahmins didn't want it. They wanted instead to complain about
the contents of the book. When such people willfully turn down
a method of associating with Bhagavan's Sat, how can it be said
that they are having his satsang?

What is Meant by God???

Sri Avadoot Baba :

If you ask me, 'Are you God?'
I would say, 'Yes'. I would say, 'You too are God'.

What is meant by God?

God is not somebody sitting up in heaven, love is God.

So in India we say, mother is the first God, and you must see God in your mother,
father, teacher and also in a guest. You must treat your guests as God,
because you don’t know in what form God will come to your door step.
So don’t see God as some separate entity sitting somewhere in heaven
trying to give you a little finger, which if you try to catch, he goes further
away. This concept of God has given rise to communism and atheism in
the world. If you understand God as energy, as love, as a presence,
as a being, as sum of the whole creation, then there can be no atheist
left on this planet. This is a scientific way of seeing what God is.

God is Love, can anyone deny love from existence?
Can someone say love doesn’t exist?
If they do, they are blind.
They don’t know.

So first you should know what God is.
God is not a person with too many legs and
too many hands sitting up in heaven.
A man with a long beard, no.
The concept of God is what has created lots of problems
in the world and divided people into religions and sects.

We should always think scientifically.
If you see scientifically, we are all made up of one thing and that is God.
That’s why the ancient people all over the world always felt
that God is in the mountains, trees, rivers.
The native people of this country believed that
God is present in nature, in the directions, in mountains
and rivers, and they are right.

The ancient Vedic system also says that God is present
in the creation, just like how oil is present in the sesame seed.
So see God everywhere. If you see God within oneself,
you will see God everywhere.
A Guru is one who helps you find God in yourself and in everyone.

Q: Our horoscope is based on our birth time.
If the birth time is unknown, does that mean our horoscope is wrong?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

If the timing is correct, interpretation is right.
You can never say that it is 100% right.
There is a probability of it being 80%-90% correct.
And there is always an adrushya (invisible),
i.e., an unknown influence.

It can happen anytime and that is what is called grace.
So grace has the ability to change anything at anytime.

Shastras (scriptures) have their significance.

Like for instance, a boy was born and the father
went to the astrologer to show his son's horoscope.
The astrologer said that your son is very great.

There will be many cars around him all the time around,
and he will have the ability to stop anybody at anytime.

So the parents thought that their son is going to become
a big minister, or the president, and he will be surrounded
by a fleet of cars but the son became a policeman.

Today of course there are traffic lights which have come,
but twenty years ago there were not as many traffic lights
but only policemen who direct traffic.

The father came and fought with the astrologer,
'You told me that my son will be surrounded by a fleet of cars,
but he has become a policeman'.

The astrologer said, 'See my prediction has come true even now.
He is a traffic policeman and he is surrounded by many cars'.

Another astrologer said to someone, 'You will be hit by a bullet in your head'.

But what happened one day, the person was wearing a big hat
and something did come, but it hit the hat and took the hat away.

So there is a saying in Tamil,
'What came to head went off with my hat'.
So a big trouble which would have come, by grace it went away
in a small way. So here the scripture is also proved right,
but at the same time you were in a right place at the right time.

Q: Is it enough if I spend some time in the mornings and
some time in the evenings for this atma-vichara?
Or should I do it always, even when I am writing or walking?

Sri Ramana Maharshi :

What is your real nature?
Is it writing, walking or being?
The one unalterable reality is being.
Until you realize that state of pure being you
should pursue the enquiry.
If once you are established in it there will be no further worry.
No one will enquire into the source of thoughts unless thoughts arise.
So long as you think `I am walking' or `I am writing', enquire who does it.

Q: If I go on rejecting thoughts can I call it vichara?

Sri Ramana Maharshi :

It may be a stepping stone.
But really vichara begins when you cling to your Self
and are already off the mental movement, the thought waves.

Q: Then vichara is not intellectual?

Sri Ramana Maharshi :

No, it is antara vichara, inner quest.
Holding the mind and investigating it is advised for a beginner.
But what is mind after all?
It is a projection of the Self.
See for whom it appears and from where it rises.
The `I'-thought will be found to be the root-cause.
Go deeper.
The `I'-thought disappears and there is an infinitely
expanded 'I'-consciousness.

Q: The feeling of ego leads us to dominate others, or be disrespectful.
What is the message of The Art of Living that would help bring us together,
and be more respectful towards each other?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

One of the biggest crises on the planet is the identity crisis.
We identify ourselves as somebody, and those who do not
belong to the same identity, we think that they are against us
and we become afraid of them, or we want to dominate them
and so we show aggression towards them.

So what we need to change is: our identity.

There are several layers of identity:

1. We are part of one divinity
2. We are one humanity
3. Then comes whether we are male or female
4. The religion we belong to
5. The country we belong to

When these identity reverses, we forget the basic identity,
i.e., we are all human beings.

Those who we feel do not belong to us, we are not happy
with them. We want to dominate them. The tendency
to dominate is because of the ego, and the antidote for
this is having a sense of belongingness to everybody.

For me, wherever I go, I feel totally at home. Not once have
I felt that I am in a foreign land. I have travelled from North Pole
to South Pole, everywhere I feel absolutely at home. We can
cultivate this feeling within us; we just need to see life from
a broader perspective.

We must remember these three Cs:

1. Context
2. Commitment
3. Compassion

See life from a bigger context.
What is ego?
You think you have achieved something?
What are you?
Who are you?

You are nothing!
You are not even a speck in this creation!

Billions of years have passed, and billions will come in the future,
in this great span of time we are nowhere! So when we give a
bigger context to life, the ego simply starts dissolving or just
smiles – it is not an angry ego, but a smiling ego.

Then commitment; when life has commitment towards human
values such as compassion and nonviolence, then life flows in
a proper direction.

Then it is compassion, which is a natural thing. We all have
compassion. In fact I would say there is not one person who does
not have compassion on the planet; in some it is only not expressed;
it is covered and needs uncovering.

How To Accept Yourself??

Sri Avadoot Baba :

Every person you meet has something special to give
you—that is, if you are open to receiving it.

Each encounter offers you the gift of greater self-awareness
by illustrating what you do and don't accept about yourself.
An honest look will show you that the reactions you have to
others give you more information about yourself than about
them.

"If we learn to open our hearts, anyone can be our teacher." Pema Chodron

You can never know for sure what motivates other people.
But you can learn what you are accepting or judging in yourself.
For instance, if someone makes a remark about you and
it's something you also judge in yourself, it will most likely hurt.
However if they make the same remark and you don't have that
judgment about yourself, it probably won't bother you at all.

I once visited a new friend's house and everyone in the family
was shorter than me. Since I'm the shortest person in my family,
I never felt too tall.

When my friend's mother met me at the door and said with
a slightly disappointed tone, "Oh, you are so tall," it didn't affect me.
I was aware that she had some discomfort with my height,
but I didn't take it personally.

However, had she been tall and said, "Oh, you are so short,"
it probably would have pushed my buttons, since I do feel
somewhat short.

This point is valid for almost any interaction imaginable:
Reactions always have to do with our own self-judgments
and feelings of inadequacy or strength, not the other person.

Most judgments of others stem from one of three basic causes:

1- You wouldn't tolerate the same behavior or characteristic
in yourself. For instance, you might be shy and encounter
a very gregarious person.

2- Your judgment might go something like this: What a show-off.
They are so loud and obnoxious. Because you would be embarrassed
to act this way, you resent somebody else doing it. This type of
judgment might reveal that you are not fully expressing yourself,
hence you feel resentful or put off by others doing so, even if they
do it clumsily. Becoming aware of the truth of this reaction and
working on expressing yourself more fully and authentically would
result in a valuable gift of freer self-expression.

3- You display the same behavior and aren't aware of it so you
project your disowned behavior onto others and dislike it "out there."

Everyone has encountered the second cause at some point. Someone
is complaining about a friend or acquaintance and you think to yourself,
"That's funny, they do the same thing they are finding wrong!"

Taking an honest look within to see if you share some of the characteristics
you dislike in others. You may be surprised to learn that you do, and it is
likely to offer insight into gaining greater self-acceptance and compassion
for others.

You are envious and resent the feelings that come up so you find something
wrong with those who have what you want and end up judging them.

Someone who has attained recognition may remind you of your own lack
of success in this area. You may resent their accomplishment and then
find something wrong with them in order to avoid your own feelings
of inadequacy.

Since inspiration is a much more effective motivator than competition,
you'd be more likely to experience success if you got inspired by
other people's victories instead of wasting time finding fault with them.
Most judgments of others are ego strategies to avoid uncomfortable
feelings. However, if you lack the awareness of where they come from,
they can lead to even more discomfort down the line.

Becoming aware of the nature of your judgments doesn't mean that
you no longer have preferences. You may still notice that certain types
of behavior seem unappealing. But with right understanding and a l
ittle work, discernment rather than judgment kicks in and causes
you to feel compassion for others, even if you're not enthusiastic
about their behavior. At the very least, you'll feel neutral.

Discernment is awareness and understanding without an emotional
response. Exercising discernment feels very different from getting
your buttons pushed. Judgments that cause emotional reactions
are clues to help you find personal insight.

When you explore beliefs and assumptions instead of judging people,
you open a door to expanded self-awareness and self-acceptance.
Rather than unconsciously delighting in the ego gratification of judging others,
let your reactions and judgments help you achieve greater
self-understanding—and accordingly, greater happiness
and success.

When you use your judgment of others as a mirror to show you
the workings of your own mind, every person's reflection can become
a valuable gift, making each person you encounter a teacher
and a blessing.

Q: Why are some forms of Devi so ferocious like that of Mahakali?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

Love and fear are two shores of the same consciousness.
If you can love such a frightening form of Divinity,
then you can love anyone. There is no fear left!
When the acceptance level has increased manifold to
accept both beautiful and ugly as your own forms,
you come up stronger and solid. So to present beauty
and ugliness as forms of the Divine is the intelligence
of the ancient seers.

Fear and even ego also is all of that one Divinty.
From serene to frightening, birth to death - when
someone is awakened to such a level of consciousness
that He sees divinity in all the forms, then only all this
can be seen as maya. When the mind is calmed then the
divinity is here only.

People decorate even with a cactus. So, recognizing beauty
in everything – Flowers as well, and thorns as well. If you
can accept such frightening aspect of divinity, it completely
removes fear from the mind and the body. One who has
undergone such states, their acceptance has become
so strong. Beautiful and ugly both are your nature.
Most beautiful and most ugly forms – everything is a
part of one truth.

Q: What is the purpose of all the suffering and evil in the world? ?

Bhagavan: There has been evil and sorrow since the beginning
of creation. You ask why the rishis do not put matters right.
The Vedas tell of the demons (asuras) who have existed since
the earliest times. There is a force of opposition in the world which
produces strife and suffering but it works to make humankind grow
and evolve. It is a force in nature which exists with the good.

Your question is itself an outcome of the suffering. Sorrow makes
one think of God. If it were not for the suffering, would you have
asked the question? Except for jnanis, everybody, from
a king to a peasant, has a certain amount of sorrow. Even in cases
where it seems to be absent it is only a matter of time sooner or
later it comes. Also, one may not question sorrow or God at the
first blow, but one is likely to at the fifth. We have taken this vehicle
(the body) in order to know our real state.

Q: But why should imperfection-come from perfection?

Bhagavan: Had it not been for the manifestation of the universe,
we would not have thought about the real state. The purpose of the
manifestation is for you to know the cause of it. There is no maya
when you know your real state. It is your fault if you do not know
yourself.

Q:  How do I manage the expectations of people around me,
and how to be happy without expecting much from my loved ones?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

See, you do your 100% and then that’s it!
If they expect more from you, say, "I am so sorry, I can’t do this".

If you are not a doctor and somebody expects you to treat them,
what would you do?
Will you give them an injection just to satisfy them?
No!
You have to honestly tell them, "My dear, I am sorry",
and they will understand that.
You do your 100% and that is how you manage others' expectations.

Now, you expect others to do something for you.
Well, if they don’t do it, don’t become miserable.
Have compassion and see that this is the limit of their capacity.
They have not learned the art of expression.
Don’t expect someone to say 'Thank you' and all nice things.
Suppose they don’t thank you, have compassion on them that
they haven’t been trained or cultured that way.
You simply have to see beyond an event or incident.

Take it to a bigger scale and you will see that, in this world,
the behavior of a person is the outcome of their upbringing,
their education, and their environment. If they lack these
three things, it will show in their behavior.

So, instead of blaming them, feel sorry for them that they
didn’t get the education that you got. They haven’t developed
the same type of sensitivity that you have. You are sensitive
to others' demands; they aren't! Suppose someone does
something for you and you express your gratefulness and thank them.
If they don’t reciprocate, you simply have to attribute it to their
lack of education and culturing rather than blame them.

This is what I would suggest you to do. See, if you blame them,
you feel bitter, but if you attribute it to their lack of their culturing
or education, you are at peace.

What do you say?

Why does our mind run after fame money and glamor? Is it necessary?

Sri Avadoot Baba :

Well, you got this question! First, you understand that the mind is running.
Then you get this question, ‘Is it necessary?’ I leave this question to you.
It is very personal, very individual. I don't think it is necessary.
But my answer will not necessarily suffice for you. It has to come from within.
Otherwise, it will be just a mood making. ‘Oh, I don’t want money’,
but one part of the mind will say, ‘No, I need money.’ One mind will say,
‘I don’t need fame and another will say, ‘No, I need fame’. Like this,
the conflict starts happening. But when you wake up and see, and see those people
who have had all this - how shallow and hollow they are, then naturally you find
there is no significance in all this. Then neither will you crave for it, nor will you
make any effort to renounce it. People who say, ‘I don’t want fame’, inside,
somewhere, the mind is saying, ‘Oh, I want fame, I want fame’. When the sun
has arisen, what is the use of torchlight? You are moving with torchlight and
suddenly you realize there is no meaning in moving with the torchlight,
when the sun is there. Then that is your experience, your true experience.
So when you run behind things which are illusive - you will realize that it is
causing more pain, more suffering and ‘it is not giving me what I really want’.

Then there is fulfillment, centeredness, a subtle solid strength comes from within.
Then if fame comes, money comes, it doesn’t touch you. It comes or doesn’t come,
doesn’t matter to you. ‘I want it’ or ‘I don’t want it’ are two sides of the same coin.
Somewhat we need to be – let it be.

Q:  How to work with those people who are negative
and have a criticizing nature? Even after doing regular Kriya
I am not able to deal with such people?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

First of all, don't think that negativity is the permanent feature
of some people. Nobody can be permanently negative, it is just a
tendency. So be hopeful, anyone can be positive anytime. When you
label people as 'negative’, your behaviour towards them will be very
different. You will over-react. So, people with negative tendencies
will bring more skills form within you. With a positive person, you don’t
need to develop any skills, but to deal with negative people you need to
have more skill. It’s wrong to say 'negative people', it is more of a
'negative situation'. So when a negative situation arises -it calls for more
skill from you. So, actually you should thank them because they are
making you more skillful.

Q:  How to stay in the present?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

First of all, you must know that my mind is wandering, then,
half the job is done! The second thing is, take out a little time
for yourself - just 15 seconds in between.

I want to share a little story with you. There was an executive
who said that he was very upset with his boss. So he wrote a
very nasty letter to his own boss. He signed it and decided to send it
out after his meeting with me. When he mentioned this to me, I gave him
this idea, that before signing any important paper, take a 15 seconds gap
and just be still and reflect. So he did it, and he later said, "Gurudev,
I did not send that letter that I had written, and it saved me a lot of
embarrassment. And it saved my job as well".

Taking that little time, that 15 seconds gap, can make a big different.
You can do this several times during the course of the day.

As children, we used to play this game called ‘Statue’. We would be
running and playing and someone would say, ‘Statue’, and we had to
stand still. Have you played this game? This is one of the brilliant things
to do to bring the mind to the present moment. And of course,
meditation is very important. A few minutes of meditation keeps your
mind like a clean slate to take on new load of work.

KNOWING THE SELF WITH GURU

We know that knowing the “ SELF “ is very difficult.
The Presence/Grace of Guru is always needed in One"s Life to understand it.
We always require a Help from ..........A Guide ,
A Teacher who has already walked on Path of Self Realization
so that he can Guide Us the steps to be taken for it .

A Guru who can Bless his Disciple with Illumination
on Path of Darkness due to Ignorance is a must
so as to be on Path of Spirituality.
A Guru with Patience and Time for his Loving Child.

A loving example of Patience alongwith Time
Graced by God in form of A Guru is read by Us in Bhagwad Gita.

When Arjuna was in constant state of Dilemma,
Krishna as Guru made Arjuna aware with aspects of
Bhakti , Karam , Gyan .... thereby guiding him
with what is right in performing one"s duty

The Sacred Words of Krishna to Arjuna
were as a Guide/Teacher/Guru ..... guiding his disciple
by clearing all his Doubts of Life , thereby blessing Arjuna
by showing him the path of Divine Harmony .

Likewise when a Rich person came before Sadguru Sai
to be blessed by Brahma Gyan
His mind filled with Greed for Money

In a greedy person .......
Peace Satisfaction & Contentment are not found
even when ...........
One is blessed with Entire Knowledge still the Desires of Life , His Ego ,
His Greed keeps him away from knowing the Self

THE TEACHINGS OF GURU ARE OF NO USE TO A PERSON
FILLED WITH EGO , GREED AND DESIRES OF LIFE .

OUR SADGURU BABA SAI rightly said ...............

" MY TREASURY IS FULL AND I CAN GIVE ANYONE
WHAT HE WANTS BUT I HAVE TO SEE
WHETHER HE IS QUALIFIED TO RECEIVE "

Special Disciples like Arjuna are few
because disciples usually have little Faith in their Heart
for their Guru .

........ PROJECTING ONESELF AS DEVOTIONAL
..............AND ACTUALLY BEING DEVOTIONAL
....................ARE TWO DIFFERENT STATES OF A DISCIPLE

BABA guided the Rich Man to Surrender
Five Pranas , Five Senses , Mind , Intellect & Ego
in order to have Brahma Gyan .

Let Us All start by Surrendering
Our Mind Our Intellect Our Ego
in shelter of our Loving Guru/Sadguru

The Blessing/Grace of Guru is very Vast Just like an Ocean
So if We have the Grace of Guru with Us and We follow
the Path shown by Our Guru
We will always be Blessed by

OM SAI RAM!!!

Why didi Buddha wait for this little girl ?

Once upon a time, Gautam Buddha visits a town.
The entire town gathers and is waiting to listen to him,
but he goes on waiting. He keeps looking backwards at the road,
expecting a little 13 year old girl to come. He happened to meet her
on the road and she had told him – “Wait for me. I am going to
give this food to my father at the farm, but I will be back in time.
Don’t forget, wait for me!”

Finally, the elders of the town said to Gautam Buddha –
“For whom are you waiting? Everybody important is present,
you can start your discourse.”

Buddha replied – “But the person for whom I have come
so far is not present yet and I have to wait.”

Finally the girl arrives and exclaims –
“I am a little late, but you kept your promise!

I knew you would keep your promise because
I have been waiting for you since my first memory as a child,
when I first became aware… I think I was four years old
when I first heard your name. Your name was enough to ring
a bell in my heart. And since then for ten long years…
I have been waiting!!!”

Buddha responded – “You have not been waiting in vain.
You are the person who has attracted me to this village.”

At the end of his discourse, that little girl was the only one
who goes to him and says:  “Initiate me. I have waited enough,
and now I want to be with you.” Buddha replied “You have to be
with me because your town is so far out! I cannot keep coming
again and again. The road is long, and I am getting old!”

In that entire town not a single person came up to him be i
nitiated into meditation, other than that little girl.

At night as they were getting ready to sleep, Buddha’s chief disciple
Ananda asked Buddha “Master, before you go to sleep I want to ask
you one question. Do you feel a certain pull towards a certain space…
just like a magnetic pull?”

Buddha replied, “You are right Ananda. That is how I decide my journeys.
When I feel someone is thirsty…so thirsty that without me, there is
no other way for them… I have to move in that direction.”

Master moves towards the disciple and the disciple also moves
towards the master. Sooner or later they are bound to meet.
The meeting is not of the body, the meeting is not of the mind.
The meeting is of the very soul!

It is like when you bring two lamps close to each other;
the lamps remain separate but their flames become one.

Q:  Please tell us something about Hanuman?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

It is said that the Ramayana is happening in your own body.
Your soul is Rama, your mind is Sita, your breath or life-force is
Hanuman, your awareness is Laxmana and your ego is Ravana.

*When Sita (mind) was stolen by Ravana (Ego) then Rama (soul)
got restless. Now the soul (Rama) cannot reach the mind (Sita)
on its own, it has to take the help of the breath (Hanuman) - the prana.
With the help of the prana ( Hanuman)  the mind (Sita) got reunited with
the soul ( Rama) , and the ego (Ravana) vanished.

This is the spiritual significance of the story.

Q:  What is love?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

Well, if you have not known it, there is no way you can know it!
There is not a single being on this planet which or who does not
know what love is. On one hand this is true, on the other hand,
nobody has known love.

Love is not something that you know, it is something that you feel.
Why do you want to analyze and put a tag to it?

You can go on describing the shades of love, or the types of love that
are there, but what are its repercussions? In fact, all the negative
emotions are just distortions of love. Your anger is because of love.
You love perfection, so you get angry at imperfections. You love people
too much, and so it becomes jealousy or possessiveness. You love
yourself too much, and that becomes arrogance. When you love objects
more than people or more than anything else, then it is greed. Love
plus knowledge or wisdom leads you to bliss. Love minus knowledge or
wisdom, leads you to misery. We can go on analyzing it, but what is
the use?

If you have a puppy at home, it will tell you what love is. If you have a
dog at home, when you return home, it will show you what love is. It will
not say, "Yesterday I greeted you, I don’t have to do it now". Every day
when you come home, a dog or a baby can tell you what love is. Hours of
lecture cannot convey what a baby can convey in a fraction of a second.
As far as love is concerned, a thousand words cannot equal one glance,
and a million glances cannot equal a moment of silence, one moment of
that inner connection. That is love! You are made up of a substance called
love and everything in the world is made up of that one thing called love.

Q:  How to change someone’s nature?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

Why do you want to change someone else’s nature?
If you want to change someone’s nature because what they
are doing is troubling you, then it is never going to change!
However, if we wish that they change their nature because
it will harm them, if this is our perspective, then there definitely
 is a possibility of change.

Why is it that people are unable to bring about a change in
another person's behavior? This is because they are caught up
with themselves. If you say, ‘Change for me’ then nobody is
going to change.

Why or how is it that only a Guru can bring about a change in a
person? It is because a Guru never wants anything for himself.
A Guru wants transformation in someone only because what the
person is doing is harming himself or herself. A Guru looks at people
with this compassionate perspective which is why people transform
when they come to Him.

Q:  My mind feels good at times and sad at other times. What to do?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:

Forget about how you feel, feelings keep changing.
One minute it is good, next minute it is not good, so what!
Move with valour and courage.

There are many situations or states of mind,
but generally you can categorize them into three kinds:

When there is craving or longing.
Longing for worldly or spiritual experiences
When there is dullness.

There is neither longing nor there is any interest in anything.
a sense of inertia in our mind.
You just go on with inertia.
This situation can set now and then in life.
When there is contentment, happiness and joy.

The purpose of all celebrations is to move from inertia to joy,
to move from longing to contentment. It’s so beautiful.

There are those who do not even look at their mind,
they just keep working and working.

Then there are others who keep looking at their own mind.
Both are not good, take the middle path.
Sometimes take a look at the mind, but not all the time.

Do you see what I’m saying?
Otherwise you will become self-centred, all the time thinking,
'What do I want?'
Or
'I am feeling like this'.
If you want to think, then think about what you can do for the world
and not what you should do about your mind.
There is a (higher) power to take care of the mind.

Q:  How to get rid of hatred?

Put yourself in the shoes of the person you hate.

A youth came to me once and said,
“I hate my uncle, I cannot stand him”.

I said, “Okay, you can continue to hate him, but before that,
just for half an hour, behave and act like your uncle”.

So for half an hour he acted like his uncle and suddenly
he came and said, “You know Gurudev, I feel different now”.

So, put yourself in the shoe of the person whom you hate.

Secondly, why do you hate the person?
Is it for what they are doing?
If they are doing horrible things, either they are ignorant or
they are stressed.

By hating them, can you change them?
People make mistakes and you hate them?
Why do you hate them, because they make some mistakes?
By hating a person who makes mistakes, can you correct them?

No, you cannot correct them when you hate them.
Do you want them to be corrected?
Yes.
So what is the way?
Not hating them but by educating them.
This is necessary.

People like ISIS, they hate everybody and people hate them.
By hating we cannot change them and they cannot change us.
They also do not know this. Their idea is to change everybody.
We hate them because they are doing such heinous crimes.
But by hating will they change?
No. Not hating them but educating them.

The young children need to be educated before they get
into this kind of mind set.

That’s why, harmony in diversity should be part of the education.
We need to educate the mind because all crime begins here
in the upper chamber.

To educate someone you need to have compassion.

See, in your life, you come across many people who think
differently, and you want them to change, and by you wanting them
to change they do not change.

When you say what they are doing is hurting you,
so please do not hurt me, they do not change so easily.
But when you tell them what they are doing hurts them,
and so they should change, that will be much more effective.
So love can transform the world, compassion can change the
world and this is our experience.
