  • The Art of Joyful Living     :)   (Found on net)

B.K.Shivani spoke about the importance of managing ones own mind to live a stress-free life and to successfully manage organizations. Her measage was simple - if mind is in our control life can be joyful.External stimulus is the same for all people. These are things which are not in our control. But the response to the stimulus is within our control. We can choose not to get perturbed under a given situation. We have to learn to control the response to learn the ’Art of joyful living’. Control over mind gives stability when there is turbulence in external world. A true leader is one who does not indulge in blame game in the face of failure but instead provides stability and is able to develop measured response to a given situation.

B.K.Shivani gave useful suggestions as to how one can learn the art of joyful living.

    * Start the day with positive thoughts as they tend to influence the rest of the day. She suggested that the best way to do that would be not to read news paper in the early morning and stuff ones mind with negative news items. Instead, stat the day with 10 minutes of meditation and prioritise thoughts and delete the ones that are not necessary.

    * Take a pause of one minute every two hours in the day and prioritize one’s thoughts. Keep only what is relevant at that moment and delete the rest of them.

    * Before going to bed clean up ones thoughts and delete negative thoughts from mind. Sleep will not be sound if one goes to bed with mind occupied with lot of ideas.

    * Early to bed and early to rise. Creative ideas and innovation can happen in the early hours of the morning when mind is fresh after a sound sleep.

Happiness Unlimited - Happiness is not a destination, it is a journey  :)
     (Found on Net,Sharing)

The Reason why there is so little happiness in the world is dependency. Happiness is not dependent on anything or anyone or found anywhere. We keep delaying our happiness until things are just right in our life. We think we will be happy in the future and then wonder why we are happy now. Happiness is only possible when we are able to accept everyone as they are, at every moment, in every situation. That means an end to judging or resisting others, an end to complaining and blaming, an end to criticizing and controlling and an end to competing with anyone. It means the awakening and the acceptance of self-responsibility. It is only when we choose thoughts and feelings aligned with our true nature of purity, peace and love that we shift from asking to sharing; holding on to letting go; expectations to acceptance; past & future to being in the now. We create a life of joy, contentment and bliss, because we have the choice and the power. Happiness is a Decision

We seek it here, we seek it there, every human being seeks happiness everywhere. The search for happiness consumes our lives, though we may not be aware that happiness is what we seek. Sadly many of us continually postpone our happiness- indefinitely. Its not that we consciously set out to do so, but we keep convincing ourselves, “Someday I’ll be happy”.

We tell ourselves we’ll be happy when our bills are paid; when we get out of school, get our first job, when we have a nicer car, a better house. The truth is there is no better time to be happy than right now. If not now when?

Happiness is our creation and we have the power when and how to create it. In this series we explore the journey to overcome expectations and desires, forget the past, not depend on the future, live in the present ; not ask others for happiness, instead create it and share it with them.

Happiness is not a destination, it’s a journey. Happiness is not tomorrow, it is now. Happiness is not a dependency, it is a decision.

Your Dreams and Desires Are Your Guiding Light to Pursue
    « Reply #6 on: October 12, 2011, 04:35:47 AM »

  • I am a firm believer that our desires are a guiding light for us to follow.  No one gets to the end of their life and regrets going for their dream.  On the other hand, I’m sure that there are those that wish they could go back and chase their desires.  We only live one life.  There are no do-over.  If we let time slip by without pursuing our desires, then we may miss our true calling in life.  How does one start to pursue their desires?  I want to share some thoughts today related to this.

    1.  Unleash your dreams.
Stop holding back on thinking about the desire that is deep in your heart.  It may have been there for a long time or it could be brand new.  It may be a quiet little whisper telling you to start your own business or it may be a roaring lion urging you to go back to school.  However your dream speaks to you right now, stop and listen.  Give it a chance.  There are seasons in our lives for everything.  Your desires may be telling you of a new season ready to spring forth in your life if you are willing to listen to it.  Don’t squelch your desires without even giving them a chance to blossom!

    2.  Stop thinking so small.
The desires of our heart usually seem big to us.  They challenge and stretch our thinking.  This is what is meant by being outside our comfort zone.  Dreams and desires often make us uncomfortable.  They are a little scary, but we have to stop thinking small.  Let your dream expand.  Unpack your desires and let them grow on paper and in your mind.  Start getting some ideas out and let them simmer for a while.  Discuss your dream with a trusted friend.  It is amazing how something as simple as this often becomes the first step toward realizing progress toward a suppressed desire.  My desire to start this blog began as some simple ideas jotted in a notebook one day when I was reading at the park.  You never know when inspiration will hit!

    3.Don’t be afraid to fail.
Why are we so afraid of failure?  I’m guilty of succumbing to my fears, but if we let it fear will rob us of our greatest potential in life.  It will stunt our growth.  Don’t let it.  Put failure away.  Dorothea Brande tells us to, “Act as if it was impossible to fail.” in her book titled “Wake up and live”.  What would you do today if you knew without a doubt that it was impossible to fail?  It is a compelling question, isn’t it?  Fear is often hard to overcome.  However, the killer part is that we have so much more to lose by not trying at all.  The consequences of a setback in our efforts is usually minimal compared to total inaction.  Fear is all in our mind.  We cannot let it rob us of our dreams!  Starting acting as if you cannot fail.

    4.  Believe that dreams will pay the bills.
This is a specific fear that I think is very common.  Most of us believe that we cannot make a living at our dream.  However, there are a ton of people that have.  In fact, we usually make more money by doing something we love.  Of course, you have to pursue things in a thoughtful way.  If you are supporting your family, please don’t quit your job to pursue your dream without an alternate source of income.  However, it is possible to start taking action today to begin changing your course in life.  It is possible.  In fact, you need to keep telling yourself that it is possible until you start believing it.  A few years from now, you will wonder why it took you so long to start working in the area of your passion.

    5.  Help others get what they want.
Helping others bring their dreams into reality is a great way to jumpstart your own desires.  I believe that the more you give in life, the more you get.  Pour yourself out in serving others.  Structure your dream in such a way that it helps other people and then really go the extra mile in serving them.  You may need to start working toward your dream as if it were a hobby.  For example, if you are a photographer, take some photos for a friend’s family at no charge.  If you want to write, then offer to put together a guest post for a blog or write an article for a local magazine.  You want to help the other party and get noticed.  The best way to do this is to let your passion shine.

    6.  Don’t give up.
I offer this advice every chance I get.  The older I get, the more I believe that a lot of the difference between success and failure is perseverance.  We often expect too much too soon.  We are like fireworks on the 4th of July.  We shoot up with a dazzling bright sparkle; make a nice pop at the top, and then fizzle and fall.  Slow and steady wins the race.  Pace yourself.  Don’t burnout and give up.  This is the biggest danger to our success.  Keep trucking even when you don’t feel like it.  It is okay to take a break, but don’t quit.  It is when you most feel like quitting that your biggest success is waiting just around the corner!

    What Am I ?

  • Number five has a special significance in spirituality the five elements (Panchmahabhoota), the five bodies (Panchsharir), the five rules of the Buddha (Panchsheel), the five precepts of Aurveda (Panchkarma),  etc.

However there is one set of fives that denotes a unique spiritual phenomenon that very few are aware of the five qualities of the Self. Lot of significance has been attached to the questions Who am I and Why am I? But the question What am I? is oft ignored. What is my inner core made up of? What are the qualities of the Self? What is at the essence of my being? What are the five core values of a human being? And the answer will be five qualities or values. These are creation, realization, satisfaction, devotion and discrimination. To make it simpler, you can substitute these five qualities with the verbs Expressing, Being, Enjoying, Loving and Knowing.

Why only these? You can use an micro or macro approach and will arrive at the same set of five whatever approach you take. Macrocosmically, examine what is being human all about. What differentiates us from animals? Man is considered to be the highest manifestation. What makes him highly evolved are five things that only humans are capable of, not any other animal. Only man is endowed with higher abilities to create and express as manifested in art, to meditate and inquire as manifested in self realization, to love and devote as opposed to merely lust, to be happy and blissful as manifested in laughter, to discriminate and know the difference between what is real and unreal as manifested in developed cognition and conscience.  Microcosmically, when you meditate on Who am I and are established on the inner Self, you are left with only these five values. You experience creativity, peace, happiness, love and truth emanating from your inner core and reverberating in the universe. You do not even require enlightenment to experience it. Ask yourself whether at your core, arent the values of creativity, peace, happiness, love and truth that exist? Take any list of values in a value education class and you can distill them to these fiveno more or no less.

Thus both from a macro and micro point of view, you are left with these five essences. Let us examine each of them to understand the qualities of Self or the nature of Godhead:

*Creation (Abhivyakti) : Creation is the physical manifestation of ideas and thoughts. At the core of the universe is creation. The Self in Rest created the universe, the Self in Action to know itself. Shiva created Shakti. Creation also denotes self expression.

*Realization (Mouna): Why did creation take place? So that the Self can realize itself.  So that the silence can be realized. At the core of everything created is silence, peace. The purpose of human birth is to realize oneself. The body-mind has been given for the Self to realize itself. The body-mind can never realize the Self. Self realizes itself through the body-mind.

*Enjoyment (Anand) : The Self realizes itself to be established in bliss. A mere body-mind is enough for the Self to realize itself. But what is unique about humans is that the individual someone who thinks of himself as separate also gets created. And when the individual surrenders to the Self, bliss manifests. God created individuality to experience the happiness of coming back (realizing) to Himself. This happiness is possible only when there is forgetfulness, when there is separation. Thus the significance of the individual. Realization leads to bliss.

*Love (Prem): To realize oneself and be established in the Self, the body-mind has to surrender to the Self. You can call this as devotion (bhakti). Devotion arises out of duality. I am separate from God. The individual is separate from the Self. So now the individual surrenders to the Self through bhakti a higher form of love. Where the body-mind appreciates and is in amazement of the Self.  Bhakti leads to realization. On realization, a higher form of love manifests. Love of the Self for its creation. Pure love. Love of the Truth for the Truth.

*Discrimination (Satya): On realization, you are stabilized on the truth. There is a clear distinction between what is real and what is unreal.  Only knowing remains. Knowing of the truth. To attain realization too, discrimination of what is the truth and what is not the truth is critical. Only human beings can discriminate between real and unreal. There are only two paths to realization one is that of Surrendering (bhakti). The other is that of discrimination (vivek) where there is a constant enquiry of what is real, what is unreal.

These five qualities shall emanate effortlessly from the one who is realized. Others can practice some simple steps that can enhance these five qualities in their life. Take up a vocation or a hobby where you are fully self expressed where you do not have a sense of time as you create. Mediate to have glimpses of realization. Carry happy thoughts and take time to smell the flowers as you enjoy the process of whatever you do. Be open to the love that exists in relationships. And practice self enquiry to discriminate between what is real and what is unreal.

Open your eyes and watch how all nature, how all that you do is a manifestation of these qualities. How these are the core values. Marvel at the question, What am I?
