VISION, TONE THE EYES"~~~

If you have to stare at the computer screen for hours daily at
office, you must have realised how tiring it can be for your entire body,
 not  just for the eyes.

   Benefits :-

A lot of eye problems can be avoided by practicing these simple eye
exercises. They tone the eye muscles, keep them elastic, improve the
eyesight and reduce tension in the eye muscles. The following
exercises  also help to strengthen eye muscles and counter balance the      effects of  eye strain. The focus and vision will get better and clearer as the

ophthalmic or the eye nerves receive a richer supply of blood. They
also soothe and lubricate tired eyes.

  Methods :

While doing eye exercises, keep your eyes open and don't move your
 head.
Relax and keep the mind free of tension. Sit with the spine erect.
 Hands
on the knees. The whole body must be motionless; nothing must move
   except the eyes.

    Exercise 1 :-

Raise your eyes and find a small point that you can see clearly without
straining, without frowning, without becoming tense and, of course,
 without moving your head.

While doing this exercise look at this point each time you raise your
eyes. Next, lower your eyes to find a small point on the floor,
which you can see clearly while glancing down. Look at it each time you
 lower  your eyes. Breathe normally.

   Exercise 2 :-

While doing the changing-vision exercise, you alternately shift your
vision from close to distant points several times. Take a pencil or use
your finger, and hold it under the tip of your nose. Then start moving
it away, without raising it, until you have fixed it at the closest
possible distance where you can see it clearly without any blur.
Then raise your eyes a little, look straight into the distance and there
find a small point, which you can see very clearly. Now look at the
closer point, the pencil or your fingertip then shift to the point at the
distance. Repeat several times, blink, close your eyes and squeeze
 them  tight.

"TIPS TO PREVENT HAIR LOSS".

While Androgenetic Alopecia is the number one reason why individuals experience hair loss, it is not the only one.

Medical conditions such as hypothyroidism, ringworm and fungal infections can cause hair loss.

Certain medications such as blood thinners, gout medication, birth control pills and too much vitamin A can cause sudden or abnormal hair loss as can following a crash diet, sudden hormonal changes, chemotherapy and radiation. If you are taking prescription
medications, talk to your doctor and find out if your medication is contributing to
your hair loss.

At any given time 10% of our hair is in what is called a "resting  phase" and after 2-3 months resting, hair falls out and new hair grows in its place. Some people, however, experience more hair loss than is normal.

Some Excellent Resources On How To Prevent Further Hair Loss:

Avoid mega-doses of vitamin A. Too much vitamin A can cause your hair to fall out.

Exercise, do yoga, meditate or find some other practice that will help to reduce your anxiety and stress levels. If you wear pigtails, cornrows, use a curling iron, hair dryer or hot rollers, try changing your hair style to one that puts less pressure and
stress on your hair and scalp.

If hot oil treatments or chemicals such as those used in permanents are causing inflammation to the scalp, discontinue their use, or reduce the number of times you are using them.

Use gentle shampoos and conditioners to avoid any unnecessary
damage  to your hair.

In men, herbs such as saw palmetto and licorice root help block
the formation of DHT. The same holds true for supplementation with zinc.
As an added benefit, studies show that these supplements can also help prevent prostate enlargement.

Massage your scalp with rosemary oil in an olive oil base. Both rosemary oil and massaging the scalp can stimulate the circulation in the scalp and promote hair growth. Again, if you are experiencing  hair loss, check with your doctor to ensure that a more serious disorder isn't the cause.

A brief on "8 FOODS FOR YOUR SKIN"

When it comes to glowing flawless skin, you may think only creams and lotions can do the trick. We showcase some foods that literally feed your skin from within, making it healthier and more beautiful :-

Oranges

What they do: They are loaded with Vitamin C, which protects your skin from damage from environmental factors like ultraviolet rays.

Vitamin C keeps your gums healthy and helps your skin to make collagen, which is necessary to keep it tight and wrinkle free.

How to consume: You need 200 mg of Vitamin C per day. There's enough in  one orange for your entire day's needs. It's better to consume the whole fruit than just have the juice.

Smoking is a no-no as it decreases the absorption of Vitamin C into the system.

Conditions it helps:

~ Bleeding, tender gums.

~ Healing wounds.

~ Prevents skin from looking dull due exposure to the sun.

Papayas

What they do: This delicious, low-calorie fruit is not just a dieter's delight; it comes packed with carotenoids that release Vitamin A.

Vitamin A has an antioxidant effect; it protects your skin from  damage and keeps it young. It is also known to decrease the risk of cancer.

How to consume: About 200 gm (a big bowlful) is adequate. The part near the seeds is the richest in nutrients, so it should not be discarded.
Instead, just lightly flake off the seeds with a fork.

Conditions it helps:Dry skin and dry mucosa (the lining of your mouth and eyes).

Whole Grains

What they do: These are full of vitamins of the B group; these vitamins are essential for normal skin functioning, growth of new cells to replace dead ones and to maintain the skin's strength against infections and stress. Niacin in whole grains also helps skin cells to absorb nutrients from the blood and break them to release energy.

How to consume: Select breads, biscuits and pastas that mention 'whole grain' instead of just wheat flour in the ingredients.

Try to eat unpolished rice (brown rice). You could also add wheat bran (husk of wheat) to your chappatti dough.

Conditions it helps:

~ Peeling, cracked skin

~ Rough hands and feet.

~ Mouth ulcers, sore tongue, rawness at the angles of your mouth.

~ A disease called pellagra, where skin becomes dark, flaky and burnt.

Sunflower Seeds

What they do: These light, crisp, nutritious morsels are filled with the goodness of essential fatty acids. They help your skin secrete  natural oils that lubricate it and prevent water loss, keeping your skin soft. They improve hair texture and decrease blackheads.

How to consume: A few teaspoons once or twice a week is enough.

Alternately, use sunflower oil for cooking.

Conditions it helps:

~ Diseases like psoriasis, where you get pink, scaly patches on your skin and cracked soles.

~ Diseases like atopic dermatitis, where skin is excessively dry and sensitive and keeps breaking into rashes.

~ Some forms of acne.

Green Tea

What it does: Green tea is loaded with flavinoids and antioxidants.

Drinking it is the best gift you could give your skin.

Sunlight, UV rays and free radical (chemicals) in the atmosphere can damage your skin cell's structure and leave it incapable of
repairing itself, making you look older and wrinkled before your years. It may also cause skin cancer. Antioxidants in green tea battle these agents, helping your skin stay younger.

How to consume: Soak a tea bag or a teaspoon of tea leaves in a cup of hot water for at least three minutes to get the full extract. This is available at any pharmacy. Adding milk neutralises the antioxidants,so it is best to have it black.

Conditions it helps:

~ Wrinkled, aged looking skin and sunburns.

~ Rashes due to sun exposure.

~ Pigmentation due to menopause or pregnancy.

Pulses

What they do: Pulses are not just a rich source of protein that
helps your skin cells grow, they also contain a nutrient called biotin, which helps decrease dandruff and is effective in controlling hair fall.

Regular intake keeps your nails stay strong as well.

How to consume: Pulses must be cooked well to break the outer protective coats and release the vitamins inside.

Whole pulses are better than the de-husked variety. Whole moong or
urad dal are the best.

Body builders beware; eating raw eggs prevents absorption of nutrients like biotin, causing its deficiency.

Conditions they help:

~ Dull lifeless skin gets a glow with a high protein pulses-rich diet.

~ Stops hair loss, decreases dandruff.

~ Helps brittle, dry nails.

Aloe Vera

What it does: This miracle plant's products have no end to their virtues. Drinking aloe juice is beneficial for patchy, irritated skin, preventing and treating acne and preventing pigmentation.

How to consume: About 30 ml daily is enough. Buy packaged juice
only, which is available with chemists. Don't try to eat the plant jelly directly as you could take in harmful inedible substances from the
leaf  surface.

Conditions it helps:

Acne, pigmentation, skin rashes, heat rashes and allergic reactions.

Nuts

What they do: These may be high in calories but they are also rich
in zinc, which is needed for skin cells to grow, multiply and protect themselves from free radicals.

It is also helpful in maintaining immunity (capability to fight infection) of the skin and helping in normal hair growth. They also contain essential fatty acids that prevent dryness of skin and hair.

How to consume: A fistful of groundnuts, walnuts, almonds and cashew nuts once or twice a week will give you all health benefits, without shaking the foundations of your calorie count chart. Do remove the skins if you like, but have whole.

Avoid coffee and tea as they decrease absorption of these nutrients from nuts.

Conditions they help:

~ Children with sensitive skin or skin allergies.

~ Hair loss and rough, unruly hair.

A brief on "IMPORTANCE OF HAVING BREAKFAST".

Breakfast can help prevent strokes, heart attack and sudden death. Advice on not to skip breakfast!

Healthy Living

For those who always skip breakfast, you should stop that habit now! You've heard many times that "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day." Now, recent research confirms that one of the worst practices you can develop may be avoiding breakfast.

Why?

Because the frequency of heart attack, sudden death, and stroke peaks between 6:00a.m. and noon, with the highest incidence being between 8:00a.m. and 10:00a.m.

What mechanism within the body could account for this significant jump in sudden death in the early morning hours?

We may have an Answer...

Platelet, tiny elements in the blood that keep us from bleeding to Death if we get a cut, can clump together inside our arteries due to cholesterol or laque build-up in the artery lining. It is in the morning hours that platelets become the most activated and tend to form these internal blood clots at the greatest frequency.

However, eating even a very light breakfast prevents the morning platelet activation that is associated with heart attacks and strokes.

Studies performed at Memorial University in St. Johns, Newfoundland  found that eating a light, very low-fat breakfast was critical in  modifying the morning platelet activation. Subjects in the study consumed either low-fat or fat-free yogurt, orange juice, fruit, and a source of protein coming from yogurt or fat-free milk. So if you skip breakfast, it's important that you change this practice immediately in light of this research. Develop a simple plan to eat cereal, such as oatmeal or Bran Flakes, along with six ounces of grape juice or orange juice, and perhaps a piece of fruit. This simple plan will keep your platelets from sticking together, keep blood clots from forming, and perhaps head off a potential Heart Attack or stroke. So never ever skip breakfast.

"HOME REMEDIES FOR DENTAL CARE"~~~

All of us are aware of the significance of teeth in maintaining good health. Teeth are the vital ingredients to health and fitness. Thus,it is essential to take proper care of our teeth. Often we think that dental care is quite expensive but this is not always correct. With the help of some inexpensive home remedies, you can keep your teeth fit and fine.So let's take a look at a few beneficial home remedies for dental care-

To keep your gums and teeth healthy, make a paste of mustard oil and common salt. Add 2 pinches of salt to one tablespoon of mustard oil.The quantity of oil should be more than that of salt. Mix the two things well and with the help of your finger brush your teeth and gums with the paste. Once you are done rinse your mouth with water. Do this activity daily once or twice and you will notice beautiful and healthy teeth for yourself.

When you run out of toothpaste, cut a slice of lemon and rub it over your teeth. Lemon does the task of a toothpaste. But do not rely a lot on the lemon juice because too much of lemon acid can weaken the teeth.

Make a paste of powdered bay leaves and dried orange peel. Rub it on teeth to whiten their color.

Maintain a healthy diet. Eat a good amount of foods such as carrots, cucumber, spinach, broccoli, apples and strawberries in raw form.

Millet and sesame seeds are a rich source of calcium and therefore provide strength to teeth.

Sunflower seeds are also great for teeth. They contain vitamin A,fluoride, phosphorous and calcium and are effective in preventing the bleeding of gums. Similarly, foods like parsley, turnip, beet and radish contain the green pigment called chlorophyll which helps to keep teeth healthy.

Chlorophyll can also be acquired from neem sticks which are the oldest Indian home remedy to keep teeth healthy.

You can make a refreshing mouthwash with rose water or few drops of spirit or peppermint added to a glass of water.

Always use a tooth brush with M shaped bristles because this cleans the teeth in a way better than ordinary toothbrushes with flat bristles.
Avoid using toothbrushes with hard bristles as that damages the gums...

"DIETING".

What is dieting?

What does it mean?

Dieting, mainly it means trying to reduce excess of body weight. The only way to loose fat is by consuming fewer calories per day than your body needs. Insulin resistance is a major cause of excess weight/ obesity, so make sure you consult your physician before opting for any dieting plan.

Dieting Tips : -

1.Drink at least 2-5 liters of water everyday, depending upon the type of weather conditions. Tea, Coffee and alcohols are not to be taken as the substitutes for pure water as these products contains dehydrating agents; they rather get rid of water from the body reserves. Soda and juices also reduce the urge to drink water.

2. Avoid junk food - Junk food means: food which has low nutritiona value and high fat, sugar and calories content e.g. salted snack  foods, candy, gum, most of the sweet desserts, fried chips, chocolate, cakes, soft drinks, hamburgers etc. These contain very little protein, vitamins and very high calories.

3.Eat small meals at frequent intervals instead of one large meal and avoid late night meals/snacks. Eating smaller meals during the day means control on obesity. The truth is that when you eat more often, your metabolism speeds up as the body understands there is more food on the way and better metabolism means your body burns off calories instead of storing them.

4.Avoid ready, processed food in which preservatives are used.

5.Avoid fatty food and alcohols - Alcohols have to be metabolized by the liver, so the liver can't perform the same job of, metabolizing fat at the same time. Fats: Include minimum possible oils to get fewer calories, in to your diet. Make sure to burn fat, you consume to reduce your excess weight.

6.Get your diet plan worked out by the dietician who will prepare the exact number of calories in-take for your dieting plan. Eat right kind of diet, introducing fruits and vegetables of all colours in your menu.

7.Choose the right kind of exercises according to your routine and activities. Make sure your exercise routine more interesting by using exercise audios/videos.

8.Food selection should be based on the lowest amount of sugar, sodium and carbohydrates.

9.Never keep on eating from a jar, as like this you will not be able to have a check on yourself on the quantity intake.

10.Soups are the best way of filling yourself but make sure you take freshly prepared soups to avoid intake of preservatives.

11.When coming to eating desserts, take a small amount.

12.Don't skip a meal as by doing so you tend to overeat during the next meal.

13.Keep daily record of intake and how many calories you are using.

14.Eat fruits and vegetables salad for snacks instead of salties and fried chips.

15.Eat fresh fruits and vegetables (unless these are baked or tossed with butter) as most of these contain low fat and calories. Many of these contain important vitamins and fiber. Avoid avocados, coconut and olives as all of these contain fat naturally.

"TIPS TO PREVENT COLD &  FLU INFECTION"~~~

12 Important Tips to Prevent Cold and Flu Infection :

Since there are no known cures for colds or the flu, prevention should be your goal. A proactive approach to warding off colds and flu is apt to make your whole life healthier. The most effective way to prevent flu, frankly, is to get a flu shot. It may not be natural, but it works better than anything else. But there are other strategies you can employ as well.

  #1 Wash Your Hands~~~

Most cold and flu viruses are spread by direct contact. Someone who has the flu sneezes onto their hand, and then touches the telephone, the keyboard, a kitchen glass. The germs can live for hours -- in some cases weeks -- only to be picked up by the next person who touches the same object. So wash your hands often. If no sink is available, rub your hands together very hard for a minute or so. That also helps break up most of the cold germs.

#2 Don't Cover Your Sneezes and Coughs With Your Hands~~~

Because germs and viruses cling to your bare hands, muffling coughs and sneezes with your hands results in passing along your germs to others.
When you feel a sneeze or cough coming, use a tissue, then throw it away immediately. If you don't have a tissue, turn your head away from people near you and cough into the air.

  #3 Don't Touch Your Face~~~

Cold and flu viruses enter your body through the eyes, nose or mouth. Touching their faces is the major way people catch colds.

  #4 Drink Plenty of Fluids~~~

Water flushes your system, washing out the poisons as it rehydrates you.
A typical, healthy adult needs eight 8-ounce glasses of fluids each day.
How can you tell if you're getting enough liquid? If the color of your urine runs close to clear, you're getting enough. If it's deep yellow, you need more fluids.

  #5 Take a Sauna~~~]

Researchers aren't clear about the exact role saunas play in prevention, but one 1989 German study found that people who steamed twice a week got half as many colds as those who didn't. One theory: When you take a sauna you inhale air hotter than 80 degrees, a temperature too hot for cold and flu viruses to survive.

  #6 Get Fresh Air~~~

A regular dose of fresh air is important, especially in cold weather when central heating dries you out and makes your body more vulnerable to cold and flu viruses. Also, during cold weather more people stay indoors, which means more germs are circulating in crowded, dry rooms.

  #7 Do Aerobic Exercise Regularly~~~

Aerobic exercise speeds up the heart to pump larger quantities of blood, makes you breathe faster to help transfer oxygen from your lungs to your  blood, and makes you sweat once your body heats up. These exercises help increase the body's natural virus-killing cells.

  #8 Eat Foods Containing Phytochemicals~~~

"Phyto" means plants, and the natural chemicals in plants give the vitamins in food a supercharged boost. So put away the vitamin pill, and eat dark green, red, and yellow vegetables and fruits.

 #9 Eat Yogurt~~~

Some studies have shown that eating a daily cup of low-fat yogurt can reduce your susceptibility to colds by 25 percent. Researchers think the beneficial bacteria in yogurt may stimulate production of immune system substances that fight disease.

  #10 Don't Smoke~~~

Statistics show that heavy smokers get more severe colds and more frequent ones.
Even being around smoke profoundly zaps the immune system. Smokedries out your nasal passages and paralyzes cilia, the delicate hairs that line the mucous membranes in your nose and lungs that sweep cold and flu viruses out of the nasal passages. Experts contend that one cigarette can paralyze cilia for as long as 30 to 40 minutes.

  #11 Cut Alcohol Consumption~~

Heavy alcohol use destroys the liver, the body's primary filtering system, which means that germs of all kinds won't leave your body as fast. The result is, heavier drinkers are more prone to initial  infections as well as secondary complications. Alcohol also dehydrates the body -- it actually takes more fluids from your system than it puts in.

  #12 Relax~~~

If you can teach yourself to relax, you can activate your immune system on demand. There's evidence that when you put your relaxation skills into action, your interleukins -- leaders in the immune system response against cold and flu viruses -- increase in the bloodstream. Train yourself to picture an image you find pleasant or calming. Do this 30 minutes a day for several months. Keep in mind, relaxation is a learnable skill, but it is not doing nothing. People who try to relax, but are in fact bored, show no changes in blood chemicals...

12 Ways to Stay on Top of Stress ~~~
by Gabrielle Reece

You know how you have those weeks (or maybe months or years) that just seem to be loaded with stress? I know it's all relative -- one person's stress is another's holiday. People with two children think having just one child is a piece of cake, and so on. I've had one of those weeks -- I've been on the road a lot and dealing with an injury, work hasn't been going my way, and my three-year-old has been possessed by an alien. And I'm not talking about a friendly alien that wants to know what this planet is all about -- no, I am talking about someone who wants to launch a full-scale assault, but only in public places. To be honest, this stress has even made it more challenging to relate to my husband in a free-and-easy "girlie" way. I've had more tones of "wife" in my voice during this past week than I've had in my entire 11-year relationship.

It takes a million years for one gene to change in our bodies. One million years! I'm bringing this up because, physiologically, we're the same humans we were 300 years ago. But look at how things have changed in that short time. Some things make life easier now: washers and dryers, transportation, abundance of food, electricity, etc. But some things make life today more insane: cell phones, traffic, increased population, fake food, TV, busy schedules. I heard a statistic from a doctor-friend that we make more decisions in one day than people used to make in a year. No wonder we're stressed out and reaching for doughnuts or alcohol to cope.

All this craziness and high-speed living isn't going away. Since we can't change our genes, we have to create a map to navigate this crazy life. What can you do to try and stay on top of the stress so it doesn't affect your health, happiness, or waistline?

1. Exercise. Amen for endorphins. Believe me, they've helped me many days with my perspective. If you have to work out, then go take a brisk walk and get that blood flowing. It isn't about working out to lose weight -- it's about being healthy and staying sane.

2. Eat the real stuff. Crappy food (fast, processed, and loaded with sugar) doesn't help your chemical brain and body handle stress. Living food, real food, helps support your mind and body while it's trying to deal with the million things coming its way. Every time I reach for the chocolate, I'm looking to feel something from it. Don't get me wrong -- if it's just a little here and there because I enjoy the taste of it, great. But if I'm using it the minute I feel overwhelmed, then that's when that food is no longer OK to eat. It doesn't make the problem go away, and then I just feel bad about eating the food to pacify myself. Grab green food instead. Put things in your mouth that are going to support your immune function and keep you levelheaded.

3. Notice. Try not to let the stress overtake you. Recognize the situations that cause the stress and notice them coming your way. You have a better shot at fending off the full effects of the stress when you can anticipate it.

4. Get it off your chest. Talk to a friend or partner about the stress. Sometimes just getting it off your chest can help unload some of the burden.

5. Keep your sense of humor. If you do have the chance to talk about it, try to see the irony and humor in the wacky bits. I think someone is dead in the water once they lose their sense of humor.

6. Stay grateful. My daughter has large lungs and verbal skills she likes to display. Just when I start to wishfully think about her being quiet, I remind myself to be grateful that she can talk to me at all. In almost all of our problems are boatloads of blessings. "Oh, I don't feel like going to the gym." Well, Amen that you have the means and the health to even be able to wrestle with the idea of going to work out. Make a habit of saying thank you. You will notice the sunny spots a lot more often, and not just the gray skies and storms.

7. Ask, "What's the hurry?" Have some fun. We're always so busy going somewhere, we miss just enjoying the moment. If an opportunity comes your way to do something fun, take it.

8. Take a deep breath. When you feel the stress getting to you, take a moment. Get away, even if it's just for an hour, to be with yourself and your thoughts. Some people like to take a walk, meditate, lock themselves away in a beautiful bath, or go to church. Find the peace and the silence.

9. Keep it simple. Simplify where you can. Does Junior really need to be in 78 activities at the age of 5? Do you have to go to every little party or gathering you're invited to?

10. Turn of the TV. A lot of it is bad news anyway, and it robs us of hours that we could use to be getting other things done. Since everyone complains that they have no time, get some by unplugging from the tube.

11. Sleep. If you're rested, you have a better shot at handling things. Not to mention, you may not stress out as easily if you have a chance to recover at night.

12. Drink water. I have said it before: Americans consume 21 percent of their calories through liquid consumption. Hydrate with water. Help you entire system function better just by drinking enough water. Oh, and by the way, if you don't think that weight loss and proper hydration have a relationship, think again. Shift the paradigm on its side -- don't think about exercise and nutritional eating just as something you have to suffer through to get into those jeans. Instead, think of them as armor that will protect you in this crazy world, with all of the bazillion details you deal with every day.

Om Sai Ram~~~

A brief on "VITAMIN - B6"~~~

Why Is Vitamin B6 So Important?

Vitamin B6 is the hardest working nutrient in the human body, but it is the most common vitamin deficiency in the human diet. It is estimated that one third of all adults have Vitamin B6 deficiency, with more women than men suffering from the deficiency.

How Does Vitamin B6 Work?

Pyridoxine - Vitamin B6 - is an essential nutrient required for life. It functions primarily as a "coenzyme," which is to act as a catalyst for other enzymes that need proper assistance to complete their job.
Neurotransmitters, proteins and red blood cells all require Vitamin B6 in order to be formed; and it is also required for the metabolism of foods into energy. Research is showing the Vitamin B6 may play a crucial role in disease prevention and treatment.

Along with Folic Acid and Vitamin B12, Vitamin B6 has been shown to help the body reduce homocysteine, an amino acid-like compound that is being studied for its relationship to an increase in heart disease.

Vitamin B6 also plays many other important roles in the body . . .

Supplementation with Vitamin B6 has been found to decrease PMS symptoms and can provide relief for pregnant women who suffer from morning sickness. Other studies show that this nutrient may be helpful in treating epilepsy and depression because it helps the body produce neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, which may be lacking in these patients.

Vitamin B6 also plays a role in helping maintain the health of nerves, which is very valuable to those with diabetes, because they are at an increased risk of developing diabetes-induced nerve disease. In extreme cases, it may lead to amputation of the lower extremities.

Maintaining nerve health is also valuable to those suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome, inflammation of the nerves in the wrist.

Also, Vitamin B6 has also been shown to alleviate asthma symptoms and reduce the frequency and intensity of asthma attacks....

Title: Re: USEFUL INFORMATION~~~"VITAMIN - E"~~~
Post by: tana on September 30, 2007, 07:22:42 AM
Om Sai Ram~~~

A brief on "VITAMIN - E"~~~

What vitamin E can do for you (and what it can't?)

Vitamin E is an absolutely essential nutrient for your body, but most likely it can't do half the things you heard it can. What does vitamin E do?

For starters, vitamin E is an antioxidant. It controls dangerous free radicals and helps prevent blood clots and blockages in the coronary arteries. Research has discovered its ability to reduce the risk of chronic diseases, including heart attacks and some types of cancer.

It is also believed that vitamin E helps slow the aging process & assist nerve conduction. But most importantly, it act to enhance & protect vitamin C and vitamin A. There is also promising research that indicates that vitamin E might help prevent or slow the onset of Cataracts.

Here are some of the diseases and conditions that vitamin E has been credited with curing or preventing~~~

Parkinson's disease
Infertility (in both men and women)
Alzheimer's disease
Hepatitis
Eye tissue inflammation
Fibromyalgia
Hair loss
PMS (premenstrual syndrome)
Heavy menstruation
Healing wounds
Diabetes
Arteriosclerosis
Menopause
Osteoarthritis
Restless leg syndrome

Time will probably prove that vitamin E is helpful in some of these and other common health conditions, but probably not in many or even most of them.As with many vitamins, there is a heated debate over how much vitamin E your body needs. The Researchers recommended daily allowance (RDA) is 8-10 milligrams per day, but most people in the nutrition field believe that to enjoy the long-term benefits, your need 10 - 20 times that quantity, which is well short of the maximum recommended 1,000 milligrams.

Vitamin E is found in many foods in small quantities. The good news is that virtually everyone gets a sufficient amount of vitamin E to avoid a deficiency, with a few exceptions noted below. The bad news is that most people do not get the RDA, so vitamin E is definitely a vitamin that should be supplemented. Be careful about which supplements you choose though, since the synthetic version of vitamin E isn't nearly as effective as its natural form. Look for nutritional supplements containing natural vitamin E, preferably in the liquid form. People on  low fat diets need supplements the most because oils and fats are the largest sources of vitamin E in our foods. Nuts and green, leafy vegetables are also excellent sources, as are liver, egg yolks, and whole
grains. While vitamin E will probably never be a cure for a broken heart or live up to half of the claims people make about it, it is a very important vitamin for maintaining overall good health and it is needed in quantities above what most people get via the foods they eat.

"WEIGHT LOSS DIET" ~~~

The following diet and health program was developed for the employees and the dependents of General Motors Inc.,USA. The program was developed in conjuration with the grant from the US Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration. It was field tested in the Johns Hopkins Research Center and was approved for distributed by the Board of Directors of General Motors Corporation at a general meeting on August 15, 1995.
General Motors Corporation wholly endorsed this program and is making it available to all employees and families. This program will be available at all General Motors food service facilities. It is the Management's intention to implement a welfare and fitness program for everyone.

This program is designed for a target weight loss of 5-6 Kg. per week. It will also improve your attitude and emotions because of its systematic cleaning effects. The effectiveness of this seven day plan is that the foods eaten burn more calories than they give to the body in caloric value. This plan can be used as often as you like to without any fear of complications. It is designed to flush your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well being. After seven days you will begin to feel lighter by Atleast 10 pounds. You will have an abundance of energy and an improved disposition.

During the seven days you must drink 10 glasses of water each day :-

DAY ONE : All fruits except bananas. Your first day will consist of all fruits you want. It is suggested you consume lots of melons the first day, especially watermelon and cantaloupe.
DAY TWO : All vegetables. You are encouraged to eat all raw and cooked vegetables of your choice. There is no limit on the amount of type. Avoid oil and coconut while cooking vegetables. Have large boiled potato for breakfast.
DAY THREE : Any mixture of fruits and vegetables of your choice. Any amount, any quantity. No bananas yet and no potatoes today.
DAY FOUR : Banana and milk. Today you will eat as many as eight bananas and drink three glasses of milk. You can also have 1 bowl of vegetable soup.
DAY FIVE : Today is feast day. You will eat 1 cup of rice. You also have to eat about six whole tomatoes and drink 12 glasses of water today to cleanse your system of the excess uric acid you will be producing.
DAY SIX : Today is another all vegetables day. You must eat 1 cup of rice today and eat all the vegetable you want cooked and uncooked to your hearts content.
DAY SEVEN : Today your food intake will consist of 1 cup rice, fruit juice and the vegetables you care to consume. Tomorrow morning you will be five Kgs lighter than 1 week ago.
If you desire further weight loss, repeat the program again. Repeat the program as often as you like, however, it is suggested that you rest for three days before every repetition.

We followed the program as described here, but made our own adjustments like eating guacamole as one of the vegetables. Probably not a good choice, but it tasted so good. On day four, we made a vegetable soup with onion, green pepper, tomatoes, carrots, and cabbage. Something similar to Manchao soup that you get in "Indian Chinese" restaurants. Also for day five, we made tomato soup instead of eating raw tomatoes.

Title: Re: USEFUL INFORMATION~~~ "AMINO ACIDS" ~~~

Om Sai Ram~~~

"AMINO ACIDS" ~~~

How amino acids function:

Amino acids are popularly referred to as "building blocks". Amino acids are chemical units that make-up proteins. They are composed of 16 percent nitrogen, which creates the distinguishing difference between two other basic nutrients; sugars and fatty acids. Because proteins provide the structure for all living organisms and amino acids are an essential component of protein, a person can readily understand the importance of amino acids to life in general and especially to a healthy organism. In contrast to water proteins makes up the second greatest portion of the persons body weight. This is an indicator of just how important proteins and amino acids are to the body. Proteins are substances, which makeup muscles, tendons, ligaments, organs, glands, nails, hair, vital body fluids, and bones. As you can see, proteins are really an essential component of all aspects of the body. Enzymes and hormones are actually proteins and as we know enzymes and hormones regulate all bodily processes.

Proteins form the structural basis of chromosomes, through which our genetic information is passed from parent to offspring. Embedded in the cells DNA is the actual genetic code that represents instructions on how each cell should make it's protein.

Proteins are actually a chain of amino acids linked together. Each protein is composed of specific groups of amino acids and in a specific arrangement. In this way, each protein in the body is specifically designed to fit a specific need and as a result proteins and not interchangeable. Each protein has its own unique makeup and identity.

Indeed, in-take of nutritional supplements such as vitamins and minerals must be accompanied by amino acids in order to be a simulated and absorbed by the body. Even though vitamins and minerals may be absorbed by the body they lose their effectiveness if an absence of amino acids is present.

The actual process whereby amino acids create proteins is: we take-in foods with dietary protein which is broken down into its amino acid forms which is than used by the body to build specific proteins as needed. From this vantage point one can observe the importance of amino acids as in vital nutrient.

Even in the brain, amino acids are able to pass through the blood brain barrier. In the brain, amino acids act as neurotransmitters, which facilitate the transmission of chemicals from one cell to another, enhancing communication between cells.

Approximately 28 commonly known amino acids combine to create hundreds of types of proteins found in all living things. Certain amino acids, which are not produced by organs and glands of the body, are called essential amino acids. These amino acids must be obtained through ingesting of food material into the body. The essential amino acids include histidine, isoleune, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine. The remaining amino acids are referred to as nonessential. This does not mean they are not essential, it merely means, that they do not need to be obtained through diet, because the body can produce them itself.

Because the process of creating proteins is true breaking proteins into amino acids and we assembly into other proteins is ongoing, it becomes very important for the body not to run sure of material enough almost proteins to break down for assembly. From a manufacturing point of view it would be like running out of raw material use in preparation of products to be sold. A factory commits the ultimate sin if it allows itself to run out of raw material and/or inventory needed to produce its product. In the same fashion for individuals to allow the body to run out of the necessary proteins needed to be broken down in the assembled into new and diverse proteins can create severe adverse conditions. Eating a well balanced diet is essential in feeding how human machine with the necessary proteins in order for it to continue to rebuild itself daily.
Taking supplements as sources for amino acids:

Although it is not common to take supplements containing amino acids formulas, they are available. They are usually combined with other multivitamin formulas. Most amino acid supplements are derivatives of animal protein, yeast protein, or vegetable protein. When choosing amino acids supplements, it is important to find supplements of amino acids, in products containing the L.-forms of amino acids, which are considered to be more compatible with human biochemistry. Generally speaking, taking amino acids as supplements should not be taken for long periods of time. Typically, it's a good idea to alternate individual amino acids that fit your needs and back them up with amino acids complex in supplemental form, taking the supplements for two months and then skipping two months. Many researchers warn against taking large doses of amino acids over extended periods of time and stress moderation is the key. They point out, some amino acids have potential toxic effects when taken in large doses. Do not give supplemental amino acids to a child or take doses of any amino acids in excess of the recommended dosage on the label without specific directions from your physician.

"MINERALS"~~~

As most people know, minerals and trace minerals are in essential factor in the proper function and structure of all living cells. Similar to vitamins, minerals function as Coenzymes, promoting the body performance, energy, growth and healing.

As in other areas of bodily function proper chemical balance is essential. An imbalance of minerals in the body often leads to various types and illnesses . Maintaining mineral balance is essential to good health. Both macro and micro (trace) minerals are stored in bone and muscle tissue. Though mineral toxicity is possible, massive amounts are needed to induce toxicity.

Minerals found throughout the body or originally came from mother earth, in the form of rock. As erosion breaks down the mineral salts of rocks into smaller and smaller particles, the small particles eventually end up as soil from which all living organisms such as plants grow. Microbes in the soil utilize the mineral salts, and eventually pass them along to the plant structure through the root system. As plants grow, nutrients including minerals are taken up through the roots and are deposited in the cellular structure of the plant. When the plant is digested by humans or animals, the minerals are easily absorbed into our systems. Absorption of minerals taken in from live plant food is significantly more efficient than taking mineral supplements. Plant synthesis is very efficient, while mineral synthesis using supplements is much less efficient.

Minerals are broken into two classes, macrominerals, and micro (trace) minerals. Macro minerals include calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, and phosphorus. Typically, macro minerals are needed in the tissues in larger amounts then trace minerals. Micro (trace) minerals include, boron, chromium, copper, germanium, iodine, iron, vanadium, and zinc.

Although it is possible to receive adequate amounts of minerals through diet alone, supplementation is generally thought off as being essential to good health. Many researchers as well as the federal government indicate there is a very low mineral content in the farm soils of the United States and other parts of the world. It is because of the typically low trace minerals content in the soils from which our vegetables are grown that often times, nutritionists suggest trace mineral supplementation.

Farmers are concerned with rate of growth of their products and pay little or no attention to minerals, other than those that promote growth of their products. Since farming depletes the soil of minerals and farmers do not generally replace the used up minerals, the end product, which is the vegetables and fruits we eat have a very low trace mineral content. Supplementation is the logical option.

It is essential to take supplemental minerals in balanced amounts, because cells of the body compete for minerals that are needed. Too much of one mineral can cause cells to ask for and look for other minerals, which if not present, can create an imbalance in the mineral and trace mineral makeup of the cellular structure.

"EAT RIGHT TO BEAT STRESS"~~~

Stress at the workplace is inevitable.  However, you can minimize its impact on your body and enjoy a sound mental and physical health, if you eat right.

A BANANA a day keeps stress away. Bananas are rich in potassiu which
helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates the body's water balance. When stress levels rise, the body's metabolic rate increases, reducing potassium levels. Bananas help the body
rebalance these levels.

VITAMIN C helps fight stress. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables such as
amla (Indian gooseberry), all citrus fruits, tomatoes, green peppers, green leafy vegetables, kiwi, broccoli and strawberries.

To ensure adequate intake of VITAMIN B AND ZINC, eat whole grains
such as oats, barley, brown rice, whole wheat, pulses, nuts and seeds.

Research suggests that OMEGA - 3 OILS, present in fish such as
sardines, can improve the body's ability to cope with stress. If you are a
vegetarian, you can take Omega-3 capsules.

TOO MUCH CAFFEINE can lead to poor concentration.  Instead, have
more GREEN TEA. It is a good source of amino acid I-theanine, considered good for beating stress.

When you are stressed, the body releases hormones that cause blood
sugar levels to fluctuate, triggering cravings and anxiety. To help keep blood sugar levels even, eat foods such as DRIED APRICOTS, etc.

GINGER ROOT, an aromatic stimulant, is very good when you are stressed.
It improves appetite,  increases production of digestive fluids and boosts the body's ability to absorb nutrients.  The gingerol in ginger acts directly on the stomach and liver to reduce nausea.

You can also add GINGER to stir-fries or chicken dishes, or brew a pot of ginger tea. Just add a half-cup of coarsely chopped fresh ginger root to three cups of water, bring to a boil, and let simmer it for 10 minutes.

OAT MEAL is packed with soluble fibre, which prevents volatile blood sugar.  It also gives you better concentration and staying power and helps control headaches.

DON'T RUSH THROUGH BREAKFAST.  Nutritionists say this can set you up for overeating  all day long. Instead,  if you take your time to finish breakfast, it makes for a great start to the day.  Also, make sure that you don't skip your breakfast altogether.

Finally, make sure you drink plenty of WATER.

"ASTHMA"~~~

Asthma is a respiratory disorder, where the patient suffers form breathing difficulty. The intensity of asthma could vary form mild to severe. If neglected, the attack could prove to be fatal.

Asthma occurs due to the abnormal contraction of bronchial tubes.[Which  connect the wind pipe (trachea) to the lungs]. This results in insufficient supply of air and oxygen to the lungs, leading to wheezing & Breathlessness.

WHAT CAUSES ASTHMA?

It could be a natural cause, inherited by parents or an unnatural one, caused due to exposure to allergens like smoke, vehicular and industrial emission, dust, pollen etc. accordingly asthma is classified into  Bronchial and Allergic Asthma. However in chronic cases of asthma, lack of oxygen supply to the heart can damage cardiac muscles, known as myo-cardiac infarction, leading to heart attacks. This type is known as Cardiac Asthma.

AYURVEDIC INTERPRETATION~~~
According to Ayurveda, lack of oxygen supply to the lungs, causes water or fluid collection in the lungs, which lodges as phlegm or mucus. This  may even spread to the windpipe and bronchial tubes blocking air passage and hence the heavy breathing. This phlegm is called 'kapha' in Ayurveda.

AYURVEDIC THERAPY~~~

Expectorant herbs are used to dispel kapha. Herbs promoting digestion, stimulants and carminatives are used in major anti-kapha therapy.

They are hot, pungent herbs that strengthen Agni, enhance metabolism and circulation, thus accelerating the dissolving action on inert kapha. According to Ayurveda, hot and pungent spices are very effective  expectorant and mucolyctic agents. Baidyanath has a battery of highly potent ayurvedic medicines that can counter the ill effects of respiratory disorders, most effectively, restore normal breathing and revitalize the system.

WASH

Scrupulous washing of fruits and vegetables are must before we eat them.
You can use a soft vegetable brush to wash tubers like potatoes. For berries and grapes dunk them in a vessel of water and gently clean them.

Wash fruits that you peel like bananas and oranges along with thick skinned
water-melons, cantaloupes and pineapples too. The surface is alway contaminated with bacteria and slicing or eating it without washing
provides pesky bugs with an opportunity to contaminate the fruit too. For
similar reasons wash milk bags before you tear them open in a pan to boil.

It may sound strange but wash eggs before you crack hem open for omelettes
or scrambled eggs. Chicken faeces may cling to egg surface and cracking it
open can contaminate the internal contents, giving rise to Salmonell infection. This infection can kill if it enters bloodstream, it can also cause arthritis and Reiter's syndrome (inflammation of joints and tendons).

Before handling food always wash your hands with soap, long enough to sing "Happy Birthday" song mentally.

Wash cutting boards, dishes, utensils, and counters with hot, soapy water
after preparing each food item and before you go on to the next food.

COOK

Cook food items thoroughly. Go for hard-boiled eggs. While cooking meat
burgers, see that the thickest portion of the burger is well done.

Use good old pressure cooker for cooking food, because it allows food to
heat to the optimum levels. Also it allows the nutritious juice to stew in the gravy.

Avoid undercooked eggs found in salads or salad dressings.

SEPARATE

Separate raw animal products from fruits and vegetable even in the grocery cart and in the refrigerator at home.

Put cooked meat on a clean platter, rather back on one that held the raw meat.

REFRIGERATE

Refrigerate or freeze perishables, prepared food, and leftovers within two hours.

Divide large  amounts of leftovers into small, shallow containers for quick cooling in the refrigerator.

Do not pack the refrigerator. Cool  air must circulate to keep food safe.

Try freezing cooked items in separate airtight containers. Make sure your containers have a tight seal, because the less air around the food, the less chance of bacteria finding it..

Remember that:

While buying fruits and vegetables look for ones that look fresh and opt for crisp greens.

Divide foods cooked in bulk to last a number of meals at the outset.
This will ensure that you take out only that day's serving. also it will avoid contaminating the whole lot. While 24 hours supply can stay in refrigerator, foods used after 24 hours should go in the freezer.

Do not allow food to thaw on kitchen counter.  Use microwave to thaw or put the frozen fare under the running water.  Immediately cook the food item after that.

When eating outside avoid raw food items like salads and yoghurt dips.

Peel the outer layer of cabbages lettuce or spring onions while cooking. The outer most surfaces are contaminated with pesticides and food borne
bugs.

Say no to beverage laced with ice, if you are not sure about the purity.

With these tips you can avoid nasty food-borne bugs and the resulting
painful gastro disorders this summer.

High Blood Pressure A Common But Controllable Disorder~~~

You may be surprised if your doctor says you have high blood pressure (HBP) because it does not cause symptoms and you can have it even though you feel fine. But HBP is a serious condition that can lead to stroke, heart disease, kidney failure, and other health problems. The good news is that there are simple ways to control it.

What Is HBP?

As blood flows from the heart out to the blood vessels, it creates pressure against the blood vessel walls. Your blood pressure reading is a measure of this pressure. When that reading goes above a certain point, it is called high blood pressure. Hypertension is another name for HBP.

How Is It Tested?

To test blood pressure, a doctor or nurse places a cuff around your arm above the elbow, pumps air into the cuff, and then reads the measurements as the air is let out. The test is painless and takes only a few minutes.

Your blood pressure measurement may be taken several times. You may be asked to stand one time and sit another. If your blood pressure is high the first day, the doctor will want measurements from different days before deciding whether you really have high blood pressure. These steps are needed because blood pressure changes so quickly. Also, it is affected by many things, including the normal feelings of worry during a visit to the doctor.

Because HBP is so common, everyone should have his or her blood pressure tested once a year. Blood pressure readings are given in two numbers. Although the average blood pressure reading for adults is 120/80, a slightly higher or lower reading (for either number) may not be a problem. If blood pressure goes above 140/90, however, some form of treatment-diet or drugs-may be needed. Lower blood pressure readings (for example, 110/70) are thought to be safe for most people.

What If Just The First Number Is High?

Often in older adults the first number (the upper or systolic number) is high while the second (the lower or diastolic) number is normal. This condition is called isolated systolic hypertension, and it also should be treated. Studies prove that lowering the systolic number cuts down on strokes and heart attacks in people age 60 and over.

What Causes HBP?

Some cases of HBP are caused by other illnesses. This kind of HBP is called secondary hypertension, and it is often cured once the original medical problem is cured. Most HBP, however, is essential or primary hypertension. This kind cannot be cured but can be kept under control by regular, ongoing treatment. Doctors think that many things combine to cause HBP. Being overweight, drinking too much alcohol, and eating too much salt are risk factors because they raise your risk of having HBP. They do not cause it directly.

Blood pressure goes up in all people during periods of stress or exercise. But avoiding stress will not prevent high blood pressure. You can have HBP even though you are usually a calm, relaxed person.

How Is HBP Treated?

If you have mild HBP, your doctor may suggest that you lose weight and keep it off, eat less salt, and get more exercise. You may bring your blood pressure down simply by following this advice. Even if medicine is needed, these daily habits may help it work better.

Some people think that when their blood pressure comes down, they no longer need treatment. If your doctor has prescribed medicine, you may have to take it for the rest of your life. Later on, though, you may be able to take less of it.

Can HBP Be Prevented?

There is now good evidence that HBP can be prevented in many people. The keys to prevention are:

Keeping your weight moderate;
Cutting down on salt; and
Exercising regularly.

HBP CHECKLIST:

HBP may not make you feel sick, but it is serious and should be treated by a doctor.
You can bring down your blood pressure with changes in diet and daily habits and by taking medicines if necessary.
Losing weight, cutting down on salt and alcohol, and getting regular exercise may be helpful, but only as suggested by your doctor. Do not assume these are substitutes for medicine unless your doctor says they are.
If one day's dose of medicine is missed, do not double-up the next day. Instead, call your doctor for advice.
Take your medicine at the same time each day, for example, in the morning or evening after brushing teeth-to help set a regular, easy-to-remember routine.

"DARK CIRCLES UNDER EYES"~~~

Dark circles under the eyes tell us about the health of an individual. They are produced due to overstrain, after an illness or an allergy. They can also be the result of under-nourishment. But these dark circles do not produce any harm to the body. So anybody with dark circles should not worry about them. In fact, sometimes they're not even an indication of physical problems.

Dark circles can be aggravated by fatigue, allergies, overexposure to the sun, menstruation or pregnancy. But they're usually hereditary; if your parents have them, there are more chances that you do, too have them.

Dark circles are the result of the engorged blood vessels under your eyes. Because the skin under eyes is thinner than skin anywhere else on body, therefore blood vessels there are more noticeable, especially in fair skinned persons. Usually, dark circles are caused by hyper pigmentation of melanin, the substance that gives color to the skin.

In western countries, the kidneys are related to the adrenal glands and with stress levels in life being so high; these glands are very often exhausted. When these glands are weakened, allergies are prevalent. Dark circles under the eyes are known to be a classic symptom of an allergy, together other signs including edema and fatigue.

Dark circles under eyes may also be due to aging which thins the skin around the eyes. Eight hours of sleep is essential.
Do not leave cream on the skin around the eyes for long periods. Circles under the eyes can worsen in people who smoke or suffer from allergies.

HOME REMEDIES FOR DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES :-
Apply a cold compress this will help to constrict blood vessels and turns tissue white and dark circles will lighten.

Drink at least eight to ten glasses of water everyday.

Put slices of raw potatoes or cucumber by closing eyes over the eyelids for 15-20 minutes. Wash with warm water and apply a cream.

Take out the juice of the cucumber. Prepare a mixture of lemon juice, lanolin cream and cucumber juice and apply around the eye for 10-15 minutes.

Prepare a mixture by adding equal quantity of potato and cucumber juices. Dip a cotton swab in this mixture and put the cotton on eyelids and keep for 20 minutes. Wash your eyes with cold water.

Prepare a mixture of lemon and tomato juice (equal parts) and apply it on the black circles 2 times a day.

Make a paste of turmeric powder with pineapple juice for dark circles under the eyes.

Apply crushed mint around the eye.

Another home remedy for dark circles under the eyes  is - massage with almond oil under and around eyes at bed time daily for 2 weeks. Almond helps to remove dark circles.

No cream should be left on the skin around the eyes for long periods.

Rub the area with a powdered Vitamin E capsule and wash off with a mixture of honey and egg white.

Put hot and cold clothes alternatively under eyes for 10 minutes. Then apply some almond oil on the dark circles before going to bed.

The acupressure point for eyes is on the mount below the index finger of your palms. Pressing this mount may help.

Dip some carrot leave in hot water and leave for a few minutes. Drink the liquid 3 times a day before meals.

Dip cotton balls in rose water or cold water and keep under the eyes for 10 minutes.
Make a paste of 1 tsp. tomato juice, 1/2 tsp. lemon juice, a pinch of turmeric powder and 1 tsp. of flour. Apply around eyes. Leave on for 10 minutes before washing. This is an effective home remedy for dark circle treatment.

Take some freezed parsley. Use the parsley cubes instead of eye creams to reduce the dark circles and puffiness. Parsley is packed with chlorophyll which helps fade darkness, while the ice cubes reduce the swelling.

Takes Vaseline, put it on a metal spoon and freeze it for 15 minutes. Then apply it to the eyes for a few minutes.

Add some mint leaves, lemon juice and salt to tomato juice and drink.

Grate some cucumber and freeze in an ice tray. Massage frozen cucumber cubes onto eyes to reduce puffiness and dark circles.

Avoid excess of chocolates and try to take more fibers in the diet.

To prevent dark circles take 2 magnesium tablets per day, especially if you're taking calcium.

Use a sunscreen especially made for the face with a sun protection factor (SPF) to keep the sun's rays from darkening the skin under your eyes

Eat vegetables and fruits rich in vitamin A for the treatment of dark circles under eyes.

"FOUR FOOD HABITS TO AVOID AT WORK"~~~

Your days are packed with schedules and lunch meetings. Sometimes you wish you ate one square meal that would not make you feel guilty, especially when you know you haven't eaten right. But most of the time, do we have a choice? The fact is, we have, only if we control our urge to binge.

Dietician Janaki Rawal of Parulekar's Gym, Mumbai offers some vital tips with regards to office eating habits:

Cheat foods~~

Cheat foods are those food items that help us satisfy our appetites, but don't provide us with any nutrition other than loads of useless calories. So the next time you sip on a cola or bite into a burger or pizza, know that you're cheating your tummy with the wrong type of food. Opt for the healthier option, rather than the tastier option.

Heavy-duty caffeine~~

Tea and coffee can surely add that zing to your day, but try and limit it to two cups. Too much of caffeine can lead to acidity.

Irregular meals~~

"By continuously being irregular about your eating habits, you land up confusing your body about the next meal of the day. As a result, your body tends to slow down its metabolic activities that further leads to food getting stored in your body as fat," mentions Janaki. So as far as possible, stick to your meal timings and avoid skipping meals no matter how important your meeting is.

Heavy dinner~~

Since work hours are becoming longer and in spite of returning home late at night, we tend to eat heavy meals. It cannot be helped, especially when it's the only meal we get to eat with our families. But if wise choices are made, then this late night dinners can be made healthy. Dinner should always be light -- with salads, dal, chapatti, sabzi and a chicken/ fish dish (optional).

Keep your lunch simple too, with the same formula -- roti, dal, sabzi and chicken/ fish. Avoid too much of masala or gravy, if eating from your office cafeteria. End your meal with curd and fruit. Eat till the point you feel satiated, there is no point in over-eating, but don't skip meals or eat poorly either. Remember, with the hours that you put in, you must eat well.

Live well

Time flies! Before we realize, it leaves its unkind reminders in the form of grey strands of our hair and wrinkles on the face.  This is an age of instant makeovers. Yet, there are no quick fixes to healthy ageing. The recipe brews slowly and involves— an early start in nutrition basics, exercise, healthy habits and a regular dose of humor.

Toasting Maturity

Growing older is not an illness; but the passing years do make the body more vulnerable to diseases. As we grow older, our bodies do not assimilate nutrients as well as it once did. Obviously, it needs more nutrient support from our diet plan and supplements.

One of the keys of staying healthy, as we age is to practice preventive health care. Essentially, how we live in our thirties will decide our state of health in sixties.  The sooner we make lifestyle changes; healthier will we grow as we age.

For a healthy you

Junk the junk food. Eat a balanced diet that includes raw vegetables, fruits, seeds, nuts, fish and soy foods.

Pack in multi coloured fruits and vegetables like purple grapes, capsicums, red onions, red peppers, cantaloupes for they are rich in antioxidants.

Eat nuts for they build immunity. Raw fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins and antioxidants. For women undergoing menopausal symptoms, soy offers relief.

Incorporate a bowl of yoghurt in your diet plan. Yoghurt is rich in B12, calcium, phosphorus and is more easily absorbed in the system rather than milk.

Exercise benefits people of all age groups. It can reduce risks for depression, heart disease, osteoarthritis.

As we age we have fitful sleep, steal a nap during daytime to compensate on sleep.

As we grow older, we should keep learning new skills. It keeps our mind alert. Invest in new hobbies. Learn new skills, for they break the monotony.

If you smoke quit cigarettes and risks of heart disease go down immediately.

Go for regular health checks.

Some researches give thumbs up to a glass of wine on a regular basis.  However, it is good to stay away from alcohol.

Take life as it comes and keep humour alive through all circumstances. Humour is the best antidote for stress.

Learn stress management techniques. Instead of chasing agendas, allow them time to happen.

With these lifestyle changes, you will have health on your side.  Needless to say, health is wealth and fruits of success that you reap in mature years, taste sweeter to people who have fit bodies and agile minds.

Viral fever is in the air

The name is self-explanatory—any fever as a result of viral infection is viral fever.
These days almost anyone we know is down with viral fever. Though it requires symptomatic treatment, and usually by five or six days body recovers from the symptoms, the illness weakens our body. The course and duration of the fever does not follow any set pattern. Usually viral fever has these symptoms, though not all of them always—

Body ache
Running nose
Cough
Shivering
Skin rash
Irritability
Stomach upset
Watery eyes
Virus spreads
The virus is easily passed from person to person through the air by droplets and small particles excreted when infected individuals cough or sneeze. The virus enters the body through the nose or throat. It then takes between one and four days for the person to develop symptoms. Someone suffering from influenza can be infectious from the day before they develop symptoms until seven days afterwards.

Disease spreads very quickly among the population especially in crowded circumstances. Cold and dry weather enables the virus to survive longer outside the body than in other conditions and, as a result if any of your colleagues get viral fever in the office, invariably the whole office is going to come down with viral fever.

Treating viral fever
When down with viral fever, do not beg your doctor for antibiotics. Antibiotics are ineffective against viruses. Nasal decongestants and analgesics offer relief from nasal symptoms and body aches. Saline gargles and steam inhalation will help you earn relief from sore throat and nasal congestion. When recuperating from viral fever try to get adequate rest, which is the hardest to get, but it helps heal body faster from viral fever. Drink enough warm fluids—ginger tea, lukewarm water with a dash of honey and few drops of lemon juice—they help relieve sore throat.

Go homemade
Eat simple home-cooked food, as it is easy to digest and drink enough fluids. You can never go wrong with a hot chicken soup. Vegetarians can try antioxidant rich tomato soup. You can throw in green veggies like--beans, peas, corn and carrots in the soup and get more antioxidant advantage. .

Stress free in 10 mins~~~

1. Do Nothing ~~
At least once during the day, take 5 - 10 minutes to sit quietly and do
nothing. Focus on the sounds around you, your emotions and any tension in
your neck, shoulders, arms, chest, etc.

2. Laugh Out Loud~~
Keep something handy that makes you laugh. It could be a collection of your
favorite comic strips, or a funny eMail from, say, your child or a friend.
You could even take a few moments to think watching your favorite comedy
serial. Turn to this every so often during your day.

3. Tune In~~
When you face a daunting task, play soothing music - be it classical,
country or jazz. At work you can use the CD drive on your computer to keep
the music at the ready.

4. Think Happy~~
Focus on someone or something you care deeply about for anywhere from 15
seconds to 5 minutes. Or picture a scene from a peaceful vacation. A phrase
that makes you feel positive about yourself and the world can also work.

5. Hit The Road ~~
Get up from your desk, the couch - wherever you  may be - and take a 10
minute walk.

6. Breathe Easy~~
For 5 minutes, slow your breathing down to about 6 deep-belly breaths a
minute. In other words, inhale for about 5 seconds, exhale for about 5.

7. Rise Relaxed ~~
Right before bed, and after the alarm goes off in the morning, take 5
minutes to relax your entire body. Start by tensing your toes; consciously
relax them. Move on to the muscles in your feet, and then your calves, upper
legs, move upwards until you end by scrunching up and then relaxing the
muscles in your face.

If you are sick and tired of your flabby abs, then here are some easy fast weight loss ideas~~~

~Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Drinking eight glasses of water is almost like a must. And do not forget to drink water in the morning, the moment you wake up. In fact this is one of the most rapid weight loss tips that the dieticians suggest to the people.

~Have organic foods for the breakfast like apples, bananas, plain yogurt, tomatoes, carrots, peppers, raw honey, wild smoked salmon, and so on.

~Keeping a track on the watch, go for an hour walk. It need not be power walking, but definitely it should be non-stop walk and that’s for sure, in a couple of days only, you’ll start finding the difference in you.

~Another tip regarding how to lose weight fast, easy and safe is that you should have your dinner about 4-5 hours before going off to sleep.

~The two-point program that will ensure the ultimate success is: regular exercise and balanced diet.

~Don’t depend upon fat burning diet supplements. They wont go a long way in helping you sustain your reduced kilos.

~Soft drinks cannot benefit you in any way. They contain 150 empty calories, so if you substitute one bottle of soft drink with water each day, it will do wonders for you. It will enable you to lose about 16 lbs per year.

~Sometimes boredom becomes a cause of overeating, so keep yourself busy.
If you want to seriously control your weight, then you have to stop yourself from getting lured into trying tempting foods.

~As important is to pay attention to the fact that we eat the right food, equally vital is to keep a watch on the quantity. Without altering your diet plan, even if you’ll reduce 5-10% of your consumption, it will prove beneficial.

~Eat slowly so that you can get a feeling that you have had enough food and your tummy is full. Eat slowly and fully relish the taste.

Surprising Uses for Salt~~~

Mankind has been using salt for many centuries, in the course of which we've amassed many uses (some speculate thousands) for this amazing substance -- uses that go far beyond mere seasoning. Here are a few of the more practical ones:

Pick up a dropped egg. If an egg breaks on the kitchen floor, sprinkle salt on the mess and leave it there for 20 minutes. You'll be able to wipe it right up.

Soothe a bee sting. Wet the sting right away, then cover it with salt.

Eliminate a grease fire. Pour salt on top to smother it. (Never use water on a grease fire.)

Clean up oven spills. If food boils over onto the oven floor, sprinkle salt on top to stop smoke and odor from forming. When the oven is cool, it'll be easy to brush away the spot.

Set color. If a dye may run, soak the garment for an hour in 1/2 gallon of water to which you've added 1/2 cup vinegar and 1/2 cup salt. If rinse water shows color, repeat. This is good for a single-colored fabric or madras. If the item is multicolored, dry-clean it. (Although American-made fabrics are unlikely to run, fabrics from abroad are sometimes iffy.)

Kill poison ivy. Add three pounds of salt to a gallon of soapy water. Spray it onto leaves and stems.
Make cream whip more easily and egg whites whip faster and higher. Add a pinch of salt.

Test for rotten eggs. Put an egg in a cup of water to which you've added two teaspoons of salt. A fresh egg will sink, but one that's iffy will float.

Clean the brown spots (from starch) off a non-stick soleplate (the bottom of your iron). Sprinkle salt on a sheet of waxed paper, slide the iron across it, then rub lightly with silver polish.
Repel fleas. Wash the doghouse with it.

Kill grass growing in cracks in the cement or between patio stones. Sprinkle salt on the grass and pour very hot water over it. Or sprinkle coarse salt on the grass, let stand all day or overnight, then pour hot tap water over it.
Clean a glass coffee pot. Fill it with a quarter-cup of table salt and a dozen ice cubes. Swish the mixture around, let it sit for half an hour, fill it with cold water and rinse.

Halt the mountain of suds from an overflowing washing machine. Sprinkle salt on the top.
Clean artificial flowers. Put them in a bag of salt and shake the bag. Take a look at the color of the salt and you'll see what you've accomplished.

Keep windows frost-free. Dip a sponge into salt water and rub it on windows, and they won't frost up even when the mercury dips below 32 degrees; for the same effect on your car's windshield, put salt in a little bag made of cheesecloth, moisten it slightly and rub it on.

Clean tarnished copper.Fill a 16-ounce spray bottle with hot white vinegar and three tablespoons of salt. Spray it onto the copper, let it sit briefly, then rub clean. (Don't do this to lacquered copper.)

Keep radishes safe in the garden. Salt worms (cutworms) will be repelled if you sprinkle seeds with table salt, then cover with dirt.

Clean coffee and tea stains from china cups. Rub them with salt.

Keep potatoes and apples from turning brown once they're sliced. Put them in salted cold water.

Clean a cutting board. Cover it with bleach and salt, scrub it with a stiff brush, then rinse with very hot water and wipe with a clean cloth. Repeat with each

Depression~~~

The dictionary describes depression as a condition of general emotional dejection and withdrawal, sadness greater and more prolonged than that warranted by any objective reason.

Life is full of twists and turns, some pleasant others not so pleasant or at times dreadful. No one is devoid of problems in their lives. Everyone has their own personal set of problems.

Even the people who have a smile constantly on their face have problems. The only difference is they know how to tackle the problems of their life and smile about the fact that they can overcome those problems, similar to Mother Nature.

Some one compared the changes in Mother Nature with depression so aptly. He said each year nature sheds all its charm and the vibrant colors but then again it blooms to its optimum capacity to smile and teach us the most valuable lesson of life.

Seasonal changes are the main reason for depression in nature. Change is inevitable, be it in nature or in our life, but what are the changes is subjective. They may differ person to person, and so will the approach towards them.

Getting into depression is a normal phenomenon, but letting it over take us completely is not the best thing. There are no specific rules or a concepts to deal with it, whatever way one feels is the best way, one should adopt to tackle it.

Here are some really easy ways to tackle problem~~~

1~Lead your life on the basis of fundamental values of what is right and what's wrong.

2~Avoid hurting others and yourself too.

3~It's easier to change and adapt ourselves to new circumstances, than to expect vice a versa.

4~Don't make any decisions when angry or sad.

5~Fight it. If you can't, then get help.

6~Enjoy nature; it's free.

7~Spend time with our own self to introspect and retrospect daily.

8~Yell, scream or punch the bag if you feel like doing it.

9~Be joyful genuinely, and not just put up the mask of happiness.

10~Last, but not the least, do not underestimate the power of Prayers.

MP3 players cause hearing loss at an early age~~~

Loud music and long periods of listening wear the hearing down at an early age. A test showed that 45 out of 358 students at a prep school in the United States had significant hearing loss. The common denominator was that they all listened to MP3 players.

Students at Harvest Preparatory Academy in Ohio probably consider turning the volume down after a test revealed that 12.5 percent of the entire student body had significant hearing loss.

"This is terrible. This means that there is speech these kids are unable to discern, that they're probably having a hard time listening in class", said Lin Hamill, a health care educator of Audibility Hearing Care, who conducted the test.

Youngsters being unable to hear teachers in a classroom is obviously a major problem. Additionally, straining to hear can cause fatigue and headaches, making it harder to concentrate.

These are serious consequences and as the youngsters grow older their hearing will only worsen due to the normal decay of sensory hair cells in the inner ear over time.

More and more sound~~~

Hearing professionals and medical advisers have been warning against headphones and earbuds for years, but parents and kids have largely ignored the problem.

"The issue," pointed out Wayne Chiavacci, a local paediatrician, "is more urgent than ever as manufacturers keep coming out with new things for kids to stick in their ears."

Examples include hands-free solutions for telephones and the merger of phone and MP3player. Many young ears are loaded with sound most of the time.

Womens Health Tips~~~

Daily calcium~~
To get the recommended 1,000-1,200 mg of calcium per day, women should consume three servings of milk products (1portion=1 cup/250 mL of milk, 6 oz/175 g of yogurt or 1 oz/45 g of cheese). If you don’t like milk products, you can replace each of the three portions with a 300 mg calcium supplement and try other sources of calcium.

Sleep stealers~~
Beware of factors that rob you of a good night’s sleep: Arguments before bedtime, caffeine, sugar, vitamin C and intense exercise. To relax, take a hot bath, drink a cup of herbal tea or a glass of milk and read. A drop of lavender or orange oil on your sheets can also help bring sweet slumber.

Growing bones~~
Gardening is a great exercise for building bone density because of all the bending and lifting. Taking care of your flowers just once a week can reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

Calcium intake and age~~
A woman in her 20s needs about 1,000 mg of calcium a day. By her 30's a woman’s bones stop growing, so it’s wise to build a reserve of bone and calcium that’ll be needed in the future. Exercise can help. Women in their 40's can start to lose bone density. Dairy foods, leafy green vegetables, fish, and even non-dairy products that are fortified with calcium help to boost calcium-intake.

Cut the caffeine~~
Your chances of developing an irritated bladder can double if you’re drinking more than four cups of caffeinated coffee each day. Caffeine in tea, chocolate and cola are also irritants.

"TIPS TO KEEP TEETH WHITE, NATURALLY"~~~

There are many effective methods of teeth whitening available, but
some come with heavy price tags. Here are some steps you can take at home to whiten teeth naturally without breaking the bank.

Things You Need~~

~Straw
~Toothbrush
~Lemon Juice
~Salt
~Baking soda
~Hydrogen peroxide
~Strawberries

Step 1~~

Limit your consumption of drinks that stain tooth enamel. A few of these include coffee, tea and red wine. If you simply can't cut back on these beverages, consider drinking them though a straw to limit the amount of liquid that actually comes in contact with teeth.

Step 2~~

Brush your teeth immediately after eating, especially if eating foods that stain easily, such as berries.

Step 3~~

Rub raw strawberries on your teeth, preferably pureed. There is an enzyme in strawberries that acts as a whitening agent. You'll want to brush and rinse after applying the strawberries to remove the natural sugars and acids they may leave behind.

Step 4~~

Eat crunchy foods that require a lot of chewing such as carrots, celery, broccoli and apples. These foods are abrasive and will remove built up plaque, which dulls the appearance of teeth.

Step 5~~

Dip your toothbrush directly into baking soda and brush. The results are worth the lousy taste.

Step 6~~

Combine lemon juice and one teaspoon of salt to make a paste-like substance. Brush your teeth and rinse. Again, not so pleasant on the palate, but your teeth will thank you.

Step 7~~

Use hydrogen peroxide to brush your teeth. Dip your toothbrush into a small capful of the peroxide and brush as you would with regular toothpaste, being careful not to swallow. Rinse with water.

~~Tips~~

~~Consider using one of the several whitening toothpastes on the market that have all-natural ingredients.
~~Brushing after every meal and flossing regularly are the first steps  in maintaining a healthy smile.

For a healthy body and mind take a walk~~~

Research done by the University of Illinois states that walking not just provides good physical health but also improves your mind and boosts your brain power. A study conducted on people said that those who walked regularly at least three times a week for six months performed better than those who did stretching or toning exercises.

In rural India, walking is not at all a problem as short distances are mostly covered on foot and the spacing out of houses insures some amount of walking, but the cities of India and the flat system curb any form of walking. But take heart! Just because you live in a flat in the city does not mean you can not find ways to take regular walks to the nearest park. One can start making a habit of walking down short distances rather than taking out the vehicle. With ingenuity, there can be no limits to ways to walk that bit to keep oneself fit.

Summer's and Ur Skin~~~

Your skin is your shield against the environment. When excessive temperatures threaten to overheat your body, your skin protects the delicate inner organs and maintains a steady body temperature. However, in the process it bears the brunt of the heat and gets sunburned, tanned, wrinkled, blemished or damaged. Learning to protect your skin in summer is thus very important!

~ Hygiene~~

Half of summer-related skin infections would not occur if people maintained proper hygiene. Shower at least twice a day to prevent build-up of dried salts and sweat-induced bacterial growth. Do not over-use anti-perspirants as they not only clog pores but inhibit sweating, which is necessary to cool the body and eliminate toxins. Instead, use loose talc to absorb excess secreted sweat. Never spray deos on broken, irritated or sunburned skin. If you see a ringworm infection (circular red patches on the body that itch intensely), yeast infections (whitish macerated itchy skin, especially in boldily folds like the groin) or athlete's foot, consult your dermatologist immediately.

~ Sun protection~~

Second to moisturiser, sunscreens are the most ubiquitously used skincare product -- and also the most incorrectly used! Each brand contains different ingredients -- some are UBA-blocking agents, some for UVB, some are chemical sunblocks and others (like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) are physical sunblocks ie they form an opaque barrier against the penetration of UV rays.

Take help from a qualified skin specialist to choose the right sunscreen for you. Apply at least 10 to 15 minutes before sun exposure and always use generously. Being stingy with your sunscreen can drop its effectiveness by half! A 5-rupee coin sized blob is enough for your face; double that quantity for each arm. Re-apply every 2-3 hours. For swimming or the beach, use a waterproof sunblock and reapply each time you towel yourself dry. Sunscreens can protect from sunburns, blemishes and skin aging due to UV exposure, but do not completely prevent a tan. Physically blocking the sun with an umbrella, a wide-rimmed hat and sunglasses will prevent tanning.

~ Antioxidants (the internal sun protectors)~~

Oxidative damage by ultraviolet radiation can be mitigated by adequate intake of antioxidants. You can take them naturally in fresh salads and brightly-coloured fruit. Mangoes in this season and papayas are rich in carotene, sweet limes and lemons are packed with Vitamin C and iced tea is rich in flavonoids -- all excellent sources of antioxidants. If 'rabbit food' is not your thing, ask your doctor to prescribe some antioxidant capsules for you.

~ Moisturisers~~

Sweating makes us forget just how much we need moisturisers. Heat saps moisture from the skin, leaving it dry and rough. You must use light, water-based moisturisers instead of oily ones each time you wash your face. Drink two-three litres of water daily to stay well-hydrated.

~ Makeup rules for summer~~

Keep it light! Layered foundation not only drips with sweat and looks patchy, but clogs the pores and aggravates pimples. Go for sheer loose powders and powder bronzers instead.

~ Emergency solutions~~

Apply icepacks and a layer of chilled calamine lotion (Markal, Calosoft etc) for an acute sunburn. If really painful, you can also mix in some Fluticasone cream (Flutivate cream). For heat rashes (prickly heat) again calamine lotion works well. Take some Vitamin C as well -- a 500 mg tablet daily for 10 days or so -- and wear loose clothing. If the conditions persist, consult a dermatologist. Tan removing treatments are also available nowadays. Mild tans can, however, be remedied at home with cucumber slices or tomato pulp applied for 10 minutes daily. Never try to bleach a sunburned area of the skin or you'll end up causing irritation.

Follow these simple rules and your skin will remain your best asset this summer!

DRINK WATER ON EMPTY STOMACH~~~

It is popular in Japan today to drink water immediately after waking up
every morning. Furthermore, scientific tests have proven a its value. We
publish below a description of use of water for our readers. For old and
serious diseases as well as modern illnesses the water treatment had been
found successful by a Japanese medical society as a 100% cure for the
following diseases:

Headache, body ache, heart system, arthritis, fast heart beat, epilepsy,
excess fatness, bronchitis asthma, TB, meningitis, kidney and urine
diseases, vomiting, gastritis, diarrhea, piles, diabetes, constipation, all
eye diseases, womb, cancer and menstrual disorders, ear nose and throat
diseases.

METHOD OF TREATMENT~~~

1. As you wake up in the morning before brushing teeth, drink 4 x 160ml
glasses of water
2. Brush and clean the mouth but do not eat or drink anything for 45
minutes
3. After 45 minutes you may eat and drink as normal.
4. After 15 minutes of breakfast, lunch and dinner do not eat or drink
anything for 2 hours
5. Those who are old or sick and are unable to drink 4 glasses of water at
the beginning may commence by taking little water and gradually increase it
to 4 glasses per day.
6. The above method of treatment will cure diseases of the sick and others
can enjoy a healthy life.

The following list gives the number of days of treatment required to
cure/control/reduce main diseases:

1. High Blood Pressure - 30 days

2. Gastric - 10 days

3. Diabetes - 30 days

4. Constipation - 10 days

5. Cancer - 180 days

6. TB - 90 days

7. Arthritis patients should follow the above treatment only for 3 days in
the 1st week, and from 2nd week onwards - daily.

This treatment method has no side effects, however at the commencement of
treatment you may have to urinate a few times. It is better if we continue
this and make this procedure as a routine work in our life. Drink Water and
Stay healthy and Active. This makes sense.... The Chinese and Japanese
drink hot tea with their meals .not cold water. maybe it is time we adopt
their drinking habit while eating!!! Nothing to lose, everything to gain...
For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you.

It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold
water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will
slow down the digestion.
Once this "sludge" reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed
by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine.
Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink
hot soup or warm water after a meal. A serious note about heart attacks:
Women should know that not every heart
attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting. Be aware of intense
pain in the jaw line. You may never have the first chest pain during the
course of a heart
attack. Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms. 60% of people
who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up. Pain in the
jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The
more we know, the better chance we could survive...

10 Steps for Improving Your Brain Health~~

"There is a lot we can do to keep our brains healthy and potentially prevent or lessen the cognitive decline that often comes with aging," Daniel Perry, executive director of the nonprofit Alliance for Aging Research, said in a prepared statement. "We are encouraging people to take steps to improve brain health as part of their overall fitness regimen for the New Year."

The Alliance for Aging Research recommends these 10 steps for improving your brain health.

~~Eat a Brain-Healthy Diet. A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids (commonly found in fish), protein, antioxidants, fruits and vegetables and vitamin B; low in trans fats; and with an appropriate level of carbohydrates will help keep your brain healthy.

~~Stay Mentally Active. Activities such as learning a new skill or language, working on crossword puzzles, taking classes, and learning how to dance can help challenge and maintain your mental functioning.

~~Exercise Regularly. Exercising often can increase circulation, improve coordination, and help prevent conditions that increase the risk of dementia such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

~~Stay Social. Spending time with friends, volunteering, and traveling can keep your mind active and healthy.

~~Get Plenty of Sleep. Not getting enough sleep can have a negative impact on brain health.

~~Manage Stress. Participating in yoga, spending time with friends, or doing other stress-relieving activities can help preserve your ability to remember and learn.

~~Prevent Brain Injury. Wearing protective head gear and seat belts can help you avoid head injury, which has been associated with an increased risk of dementia.

~~Control Other Health Conditions. Maintaining a healthy weight, exercising, eating a well-balanced and nutritious diet, and controlling stress can help reduce your risk of diseases that affect your brain, including diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and hypertension.

~~Avoid Unhealthy Habits. Smoking, heavy drinking and use of recreational drugs can increase the risk of dementia and cognitive decline.

~~Consider Your Genes. If your family history puts you at risk for developing dementia, work with your doctor to find ways to maintain your brain health to help avoid or slow the progression of cognitive decline.

What is Heartburn??

Despite its name, heartburn doesn't affect the heart. Heartburn is a burning feeling in the lower chest, along with a sour or bitter taste in the throat and mouth. It usually occurs after eating a big meal or while lying down. The feeling can last for a few minutes or a few hours.

What causes heartburn??

When you eat, food passes from your mouth down a tube (about 10 inches long in most people) called the esophagus. To enter the stomach, the food must pass through an opening between the esophagus and stomach. This opening acts like a gate to allow food to pass into the stomach.

Usually, this opening closes as soon as food passes through. But if it doesn't close all the way, acid from your stomach can get through the opening and into your esophagus. This is called reflux. Stomach acid can irritate the esophagus and cause heartburn.

Be Your Fragrant Best This Summer~~~

Summer is here bringing with it a host of sweaty problems. Our expert reveals a few secrets that will leave you cool, fresh and fragrant.

Hot humid summers make you long for something cool and fragrant. During this time, one is always searching for some magic solution to the perennial problem of looking, feeling and smelling fresh.

Perspiration: The double-edged sword~~

Perspiration is the main menace during summer. It saps our energy, detracts the cool feeling and, worst of all, it leads to body odour. But perspiration is also the body's natural way of cooling. Each one of us have sweat glands, distributed all over the body. When these glands excrete sweat, it mixes with surface bacteria, decomposes and emits body odour.

Take a cold shower~~

Bath-time is a real pleasure during summer. It helps to keep away germs, dirt and body odour besides soothing and relaxing us. It not only refreshes but also revives us.

All parts of the body must be washed well, specially the neck, armpits, genital area and feet. These are the areas where germs accumulate. Adding cologne, which has a cooling effect, to the bath water leaves the body fragrant.

Deos and perfumes are the order of the day~~

Deodorants, anti-perspirants, talcum powder and perfumes give temporary relief from body odour. Most deodorants are also anti-perspirants. A spray, rather than the roll-on deodorants may be more suitable in summer, but this is a matter of personal choice. However, be sure to choose a mild deodorant, as strong anti-perspirants can cause skin irritation. It is always better to try them out on a small skin area first. If the skin tingles or burns for more than a minute, you should not use it. Perspiration is a natural process and should not be blocked with strong anti-perspirants. Some people find the use of talcum powders quite adequate.

A whiff of romance~~

Fragrances are very much a part of grooming. They evoke romance and sensuality and are the most luxurious of aids we use for grooming. Perfumes put the finishing touch to grooming and help to add that extra something - whether it is femininity, sensuality or individuality. In fact, the market for perfumes is not only vast, but also very expensive.

Nature has bestowed upon us the most wonderful fragrances. Imagine what a rose or jasmine would be like without their delightful fragrance. In fact, nature's perfumes are all distinct and different from each other. The fragrance of a rose can be identified even with closed eyes.

A nostalgic journey~~

During ancient times, aromas of plant products were actually used to treat psychosomatic and psychological problems, due to their effect on the nerves. Many of these were said to have a calming and soothing effect on the mind. Their sedative properties had none of the side effect of modern day drugs.

Title: Re: USEFUL INFORMATION~~~Why do fingers and toes wrinkle in the bathtub?
Post by: tana on June 27, 2008, 12:06:50 AM
Om Sai Ram~~~

Why do fingers and toes wrinkle in the bathtub?

The outermost layer of the skin swells when it absorbs water. It is tightly attached to the skin underneath, so it compensates for the increased area by wrinkling.
There are various theories of why fingers and toes wrinkle in water. Most biologists suggest that the tough outer layer of skin made up of dead keratin cells is responsible. Keratin is a protein found in hair, nails, and the outermost layer of our skin.

Our skin is made up of three layers:

The subcutaneous tissue is the deepest layer. It contains fats and connective tissue along with large blood vessels and nerves.
The dermis is the middle layer. It contains the blood vessels, nerves, hair roots, and sweat glands.
The epidermis is the topmost layer. It helps to prevent evaporation of water from the body and to protect the internal layers from harm.
The epidermis is made up of four layers:

the stratum corneum
granular layer
squamous cell layer
and basal cell layer
The stratum corneum is the outer layer of our skin - the part that we can see and feel. This is the layer with the dead keratin cells.

While a person is in the pool or a bathtub for a long time, the dead keratin cells absorb water. This absorption causes the surface area of the skin to swell, but the outer layer is tightly attached to the living tissue. So, to compensate for the increased surface area, our skin wrinkles.

So why does this happen to hands and feet and not to other parts of the body? Because the hands and feet have the thickest layer of dead keratin cells. Our hands and feet are subjected to a lot of wear and tear. Imagine if the palm of our hands had skin as thin as that on our backs. No fun playing basketball with skin that thin!

Om Sai Ram~~~

Headache or Migraine??

Read on to find out the symptoms and triggers for both so that you know what you're suffering from...
For some people the words are interchangeable, and every headache is described as a migraine, but the two things are different in important ways. So what are the differences between them?

WHAT'S WHAT??

The vast majority of non-migraine headaches are tension headaches. These are caused by tension or spasm in the muscles of the head and neck. The common areas of tension are the back of the neck, the temples, and the forehead. Tension from the neck muscles can spread across the scalp to give a headache that comes over the top of the head. Migraine is caused by oversensitivity of blood vessels in and around the brain and outside the skull. The blood vessels first constrict (close down), then dilate (open up).

TRIGGERS~~

Both types of headache can be triggered by tension, stress, anxiety, fatigue and hormonal changes. Migraine can also be triggered by a whole host of other things that wouldn't normally provoke a tension headache, eg, going on holiday, change of climate, getting up late, loud noises, intense smells, dieting, smoking, missed meals, bright sunlight and a flickering TV. Certain foods may trigger migraine, the most common culprits being chocolate, cheese, red wine, citrus fruits and fried food.

SYMPTOMS~~

Tension headaches can be severe and last for long periods of time. They are usually felt on both sides of the head, and are commonly described as a tight band going around the head or a feeling of something pressing down on top of the head. Severe tension headaches can produce some nausea. Tension headaches occur in almost everyone at some time, and many people suffer them recurrently.

Migraine is three times more common in women than in men. It is very rare to develop migraine after the age of 50, and 60 per cent of migraine sufferers have their first attack before the age of 20. An attack often starts with some visual symptoms, due to bloodvessel constriction, before the headache begins. Flashing lights, colour distortions, halos, or even, occasionally, loss of one half of the visual field may precede the headache. These symptoms (known as the prodrome) last from 15 minutes to an hour or more. The headache is usually very severe, is often one-sided and commonly causes vomiting. It can be totally disabling while it lasts. Some severe episodes may lead to tingling, numbness or slight weakness of one side, all of which resolve after the headache has passed. A migraine episode can last anything from two hours to two days.

TREATMENT~~

Both types of headache can be treated with simple painkillers or nonsteroidal tablets such as ibuprofen, for those who know they can take this type of medication safely - if in doubt, ask your pharmacist. With a migraine attack, it may also be necessary for the sufferer to take an anti-sickness tablet. Migraine sufferers are advised to lie down in a quiet, darkened room, as this removes certain possible triggers, but it isn't always practical.

The treatment of migraine has been greatly improved in recent years by the development of a group of drugs called triptans. These act on blood vessels in and around the brain, and can be dramatically effective for severe, recurrent migraine, but aren't useful for non-migraine headaches. In addition to the treatment of individual attacks, there are several drugs that can be taken daily as migraine prevention.

Or, here’s the next best thing to do. Fool your body into thinking you’re feeling great

First, we’re going to slowly ease that tension out of the body. Sit on a chair with legs crossed. Pretend that your ankle is a pen and use it to write the alphabet. Repeat with the other ankle.

Next, place your thumbs at the edge of your eyebrows, on each side of our head. Slide them up, stopping at the corner of the head, almost into the hairline. Press the thumbs into each side of the forehead; hold for a few seconds and then release. Repeat five times. By doing this, you release emotional stress because these pressure points are linked to the emotional centre of the brain.

Eat an orange. The vitamin C helps detoxify the body. Chewing on a handful of roasted cashew nuts can also be a good upper. Nuts contain magnesium and essential fatty acids that help boost moods.

Change the breathing. Lie on your back, with the fingertips of one hand nesting between the breastbone and the solar plexus. Place the other hand on the belly. Taking deep breath through your nose push out your stomach as you inhale, thus filling your lungs. Hold for a few seconds and then slowly exhale. As oxygen replenishes your brain, use your fingertips to lightly stimulate the calming areas of your body and you’ll feel more relaxed.

The brain believes in the images it receives. So creative visualisation can quickly top up your happiness levels. Imagine the sun sending heat and light to your arms and legs. Soak in that sensation and feel the joy slowly seeping in.

The following stretching exercises help release tension. To make the most of each stretch, hold each position for 20 to 30 seconds and repeat each exercise two or three times.

Slowly bend your head down and up, looking down at your chest and then up to the ceiling.
Slowly bend your head side to side as though you are going to touch your ear to each shoulder, while keeping your shoulders down.
Slowly rotate your head from side to side as though you are going to look over each shoulder.
Interlace your fingers behind your head and press your elbows toward the wall behind you.
Do these exercises at least twice a day, and see and feel the difference. If they still don't work, go and see your doctor. He might be able to suggest other ways to beat the stress, so that it does not affect your efficiency at work.

How To Heal With Aloe Vera Plants: Tips Guide

If you're thinking about introducing a new houseplant to your home, the Aloe Vera plant offers a wealth of benefits since it's a plant that gives and gives, then gives some more!
Here is a large list of notes for first aid and healing treatments you can benefit from, tomorrow I'll have information for growing your own plant and some tips for using it.
How To Treat A Wound With Aloe
Clean wound thoroughly
Apply Aloe Vera pulp in the wound
Wrap tightly with a bandage
Keep bandage soaked in Aloe Vera juice
The wound should quickly heal with little or no scarring, bandages will remove easily. There is also a much reduced risk of infection when using Aloe.
For minor scar removal, keep applying Aloe Vera juice morning and night (daily). This may take several months to see great results (six months or so).
For painful scrapes and abrasions, gently slide a split leaf over the area and reapply several times during the next 24 hours.

Burns & Sunburns~~
Good for soothing and healing burns and sunburns, simply apply juice from an aloe leaf directly to burned area. See also Sunburn Relief Home Remedies. Especially handy in the home for kitchen burns!

Home Remedy For Digestive Problems~~
Three times daily take 1 to 2 TBS of aloe juice/gel. This will act like a general tonic and mild regulator of the bowels.

Sap Extraction For Bowel Regulation~~
The sap is a yellow bitter fluid that flows between the skin and the pulp of the Aloe and acts as a laxative.
Place green peelings of an aloe leaf in a jar of water and refrigerate. The more leaves in the jar, the stronger the tonic will be.

Take a few sips once or twice a week to help regulate your bowels. Top up the jar with fresh aloe leaves as needed.

Scalp & Hair Treatments~~
Aloe juice can add lustre, richness and manageability to hair as well as heal some scalp abrasions and diseases:
Before bedtime wet hair thoroughly with aloe vera juice and allow to dry. Rinse thoroughly in the morning (may suds up a bit).

Poison Ivy, Poison Oak & Allergies~~
Use Aloe Vera as a pain inhibitor and reduce itchiness, also enhances healing of rashes and sores:

For relief apply aloe vera juice directly to area that is irritated.

Pregnancy Stretch Marks~~
Apply Aloe Vera juice directly to skin while pregnant, after birth keep applying to encourage healing.

Insect Bites, Jellyfish Stings, Etc.
Bees, mosquitoes, ants, wasps, yellow jackets, scorpions, centipedes and other insects Also see these home remedies for mosquito bites.:
As soon as the bite or sting occurs, split open a leaf and apply it directly to the bite area.

Arthritis Treatments~~
Dice up Aloe Vera leaves and place pieces in a jar of water, refrigerate. Drink 4 Tablespoons per day and top up water in the jar as consumed. The drink can be bitter but it does go away over time. Some may find relief right away, many don't find relief until a couple months later. Make a fresh jar of leaves as needed.

For aching joints and muscles, rub Aloe Vera on the skin, relief should be felt within a few minutes and can be repeated as necessary.

Age Skin Spots~~
Apply Aloe Vera juice to the spots twice a day, spots will be reduced or completely removed after several months of treatment. Also see Home Treatment for Age Spots.

Acne Treatments~~
Give your skin a good cleansing morning and night. Apply juice directly from the leaf. Can also apply to pimples and other sores.

For removing old acne scars, apply a little Aloe Vera juice morning and night until the scars are gone. This can take several months. If skin is dry, apply with a moisturizing cream.

Asthma~~
Boil Aloe Vera leaves in a pan of water and breathe in the vapor.

How To Tell If You're Allergic To Aloe Vera
Before applying any first aid treatments, find out if you have an allergy to it first. If you're allergic to aloe vera, you may experience the results opposite to what you were hoping for. Here's how you can quickly find out if you're allergic to aloe vera:
Apply a small amount of aloe vera juice on the inside of your arm or behind your ears. If a rash appears or you experience a stinging sensation within a few minutes, do not use aloe vera for first aid.

Did You Know:
After removing an aloe leaf to treat a burn or cut, you can refrigerate it and it will keep for 2 to 3 weeks.

Aloe Vera is an astringent and may cause skin to dry. You can apply baby oil or other lubricant along with the aloe to help prevent dryness.

What leaf is best to use in first aid treatments?
The lowest leaves (closest to the ground) should be used first. These leaves are older and larger so they have more juice and greater potency.

Caution For Diabetics:
Drinking Aloe Vera juice might enable the pancreas to produce more of its own insulin. Before taking aloe vera internally, diabetics should have their physician monitor their need for extra insulin since too much is dangerous.

Burn More Calories - Take the Stairs~~~

Are you trying to burn more calories without spending more time at the gym?
If your answer is yes, then get yourself to the nearest set of stairs!

Walking up and down the stairs is great exercise and burns calories. You can
burn about 300 calories for 30 minutes of walking the stairs depending on
the intensity of your workout. But, beware, 30 minutes is a lot of time to
spend walking up and down stairs. It is hard work.

The advantages of walking the stairs? They are many:

• You can walk the stairs anywhere there are stairs – offices, homes, stores
• We all know how to do it, no special training is needed
• No special equipment is needed, though if you are going to walk up
multiple flights as exercise you need good shoes. I used to walk the stairs
at work in high heels, but it was only for a floor or two. I had some scary
moments, especially going down stairs where I almost catapulted myself over
the edge a few times.
• You can do this exercise in short spurts. If you only have time to run a
report up to a colleague two floors up from you that still counts as
exercise even if you do not take the stairs again for another couple of
hours.
• Stair climbing will exercise your legs particularly your quadriceps (front
of the thighs) and your butt.
• Your heart will get a good workout
• It is low impact and safe for your knee joints

But…….

• If you are walking stairs at a public facility make sure the stairs are
safe, clean, well-ventilated and have enough light. Stairwells in public
buildings can hide a wide variety of nasty smells and icky things.
• Let someone know if you are going to be taking an exercise break at work
to walk the stairs for 10 or 15 minutes. That way if something happens,
whether an injury or getting locked out, someone will notice if you are not
back at your desk.
• Take your time, especially coming down the stairs and make sure you hold
on to the railing for balance.
• Make sure the doors don't lock behind you and that you can get out of the
stairwell when you want. I walked down the stairs at work only to find that
the bottom three floors had doors that locked and could not be opened from
the stairwell so I had to walk all the way back up again. Aside from the
inconvenience it caused a few moments of panic. I thought I would be in the
stairwell until the next fire drill.
• Beware if you have knee problems, walking down stairs may cause pain. If
your knees bother you going down stairs you can take the elevator down and
walk back up or walk down one flight and walk around the floor, go down
another flight and walk around that floor, etc. Giving yourself a little
break every few minutes is easier on your knees than running down the stairs
in one spurt of activity.

After your stair walking make sure you stretch your quads, hamstrings and
calves. Those are the parts of your body that will work the hardest climbing
stairs.

There is a Canadian web-site <http://stairway.hc-sc.gc.ca/calcalc.aro> which
will show you how many calories you burn going up and down the stairs. It
will inspire you to step out of the elevator and on to the stairs.

Since most of us no longer smoke and water coolers are a thing of the past
take a break from staring at your computer and take an exercise break to go
walk the stairs. You will be surprised by what good exercise it is and just
keep thinking about all those calories you are burning.

Title: Re: USEFUL INFORMATION~~~Why does pepper make you sneeze?

Om Sai Ram~~~

Why does pepper make you sneeze?

A sneeze is a reflex that is triggered when nerve endings inside the mucous membrane of the nose are stimulated.

Pepper, be it white, black, or green, contains an alkaloid of pyridine called piperine. Piperine acts as an irritant if it gets into the nose. It stimulates (or irritates) the nerve endings inside the mucous membrane. This stimulation will cause you to sneeze. Actually, the nose wants to kick out this irritant and the only way it knows how to do this is by sneezing."

Did you know ...

~Sneezing is called sternutation.
~When you sneeze air rushes out your nose at a rate of 100 miles per hour!
~There are an estimated 5 million scent receptors in the human nose.
~Our noses produce an estimated one to two pints of mucus a day.

Pepper facts~~

~Known as the "king of spices" because it is one of the oldest and most popular spices in the world.
~Pepper was so valuable that in ancient Greece and Rome it was used as currency.
~It is believed that when the Goths defeated Rome in 410, they demanded a ransom of 3,000 pounds of pepper, along with other valuables such as silk.
~During the middle ages, peppercorns were accepted in lieu of money for dowries, rent and taxes.
~During the 19th century, Salem, Massachusetts played an important role in the world pepper trade
