Shri Narasimha Saraswati, about three centuries before the advent of Swami Samarth is believed to be the earlier incarnation of Shri Dattatreya. The 'Guru Charitra' one of the most famous books gives lot of information about Him. As per the most popular belief, Shri Narasimha Swami, after helping and spiritually uplifting a large number of people over a few decades, went away to the Himalayas for penance and went into Samadhi. In the Samadhi state He remained for about three hundred years. With the passage of time a huge anthill grew over him and he was lost to the outside world. One day accidentally a woodcutter’s axe fell on the bushes grown around the ant hill. He was shocked to find blood stains on the blade of the axe. He cleared the anthill and Lo, he found a Yogi in meditation. The Yogi slowly opened his eyes and consoled the dumbfounded woodcutter saying that it was the Divine Will for Him to re-appear in the world to resume His mission. This Yogi, in his new role came to be known as Swami Samarth.
Prior to his settlement at Akkalkot, Swami Samarth visited far and wide. While moving in the Himalayan region he visited China. Thereafter, he visited places like Puri, Benaras, Hardwar, Girnar, Kathiawad and Rameswaram in the South. He also stayed at Mangalvedha, a town near Pandharpur in Solapur district Maharashtra, which had been inhabited earlier by famous saints like Domojipant and Chokhamela. He came to Akkalkot in 1856 where he continued his physical existence for 22 years. He came to Akkalkot on the invitation of one Chintopant Tol and stayed at a place on the outskirts of the town.

Mahasamaadhi
Shree Swami Samarth one day suddenly announced that the time had come for him to go out of his physical existence. By Hindu calendar it was Chaitra Vadya Trayodashi of Hindu year 1800, i.e. April 30, 1878 AD, Tuesday at 4 PM. At this time he seated himself in Padmasana (Lotus Posture) and uttered his last words - "no one should weep I shall always be present at all places and I shall respond to every call of the devotees." The great sage adopted MahaSamadhi [the last conscious communion with God] under his favourite Banyan tree.
The divine game (leela) of Shree Swami Samarth did not end with his Maha Samadhi (shedding his mortal coil). His devotees continue to experience the miracles of his visible and invisible help even till today.

"Fear not , I am always with you!!"
He says, "Surrender your ego and offer your unconditional love and I will fill you with immortal bliss"..

Swami's Instant Help
Vishnupant
The royal family of Kolhapur employed Vishnupant, a devotee of Swami. One day Swami said to him, "You will have to go away for some time. But do not worry for I shall arrange to bring you back". Vishnupant could not understand Swami’s prophetic words. A few days later, he received a transfer order from his office. He now understood what Swami had said. Vishnupant went to bid Swami Goodbye. He bowed to the sage for his blessings and proceeded to another village to resume duty. As he was staying alone, he set his daily routine thus. He would go to work the whole day. Then he would come home and finish his household chores and errands. Later in the evening, he would sit in front of Swami’s photograph, light an oil lamp, burn incense and sing devotional songs. He would finish this devout session with the aarti.
One day around the same time, Vishnupant’s neighbor saw a man who had the appearance of an Avadhoota [It is also one of the sixteen prominent names of Lord Dattatreya. Usually those from Lord Dattatreya’s Avadhoota lineage are bachelors, wear deerskin, rudraksha ( a tree seed ) beads around their waist, wrists and neck. They carry the kamandalu (water pot) in one hand and the trishul (trident) in another hand. They smear themselves with vibhuti (holy ash) and carry a saffron color bag) leaving Vishnupant’s house. Being curious, he kept a watch the next day. When he saw the Avadhoota leave, he stopped him and inquired about his presence. The Avadhoota replied that "Vishnupant sings with such great devotion, that I come specially to listen to him". Not satisfied with his answer, he decided to question Vishnupant about the Avadhoota’s identity. When he asked Vishnupant, the latter was in tears. He realized that unknown to him, Swami was daily visiting his house in disguise. He said to his neighbor, "My friend, you are very lucky as you are able to see my Guru Shri Krishna Saraswati Swami everyday". After a brief stay here, Vishnupant was transferred back to Kolhapur. Thus Swami kept his promise to his devotee.

Laxmi
Vishnupant had a younger sister named Laxmi. She was married off to a widower with two small sons. They lived at Bedagagram. Soon her husband procured employment at Kolhapur, therefore the whole family shifted there. Vishnupant arranged for all of them to stay at his house. Thus Laxmi also started visiting Swami along with her brother.
On one such visit, Swami blessed her with two more children. However Laxmi gently declined Swami’s blessings by saying, "Swami, I do not want more children. My attitude towards my sons may become step-motherly if I have children of my own. I do not want to disturb the peace in my house". Swami laughed. Although Laxmi’s views were unconventional, it proved that she was good-natured and kind at heart.
A few days later, Laxmi saw a dream. In the dream she saw four Muslim fakirs come to her house and ask for one anna (sixteenth part of a rupee in the Indian currency). They gave her a coconut as prasad. When she woke up, she could not decipher the meaning of the dream. In the morning her husband and brother went to work. After a few hours, four Muslims fakirs really came to her house and called out to her by name. She was shocked to see that they were the same as seen by her earlier in her dream. They were even wearing the same garments. They asked her for one anna and wanted to give her a coconut as an offering. Frightened out of her wits, she went inside the house to consult the elderly women of the family. They told her not to accept anything as these unknown strangers might be practicing black magic. She, therefore, politely refused to accept the coconut.
In the evening when the men came home from work, they were briefed about the happenings that occurred earlier that day. On hearing this, Vishnupant was furious. He rebuked Laxmi by saying, "Don’t you know that at noon Lord Dattatreya visits his devotees. You did not do the right thing by refusing the prasad". All the family members were perturbed and confused. The whole family went to seek Swami’s reassurance. Vishnupant apologized to Swami for Laxmi’s behavior and asked what they could do as repentance. Swami asked them to wait. After some time, the same four fakirs entered the mathi. They bowed to Swami and placed the coconut in front of him. Then, they immediately left. Swami called out to Laxmi and gave her the same coconut saying, "Accept whatever is given with grace. Do not refuse it".
In due course of time, Laxmi gave birth to a beautiful daughter. After twelve days, Laxmi brought her daughter and placed her at Swami’s feet for blessings. Swami happily took the baby on his lap, touched her nose, kissed her and pronounced, "My lovely child. Name her Mukta (God-realized)".

Yesubai
A widow named Yesubai lived with her father in a village called Alate. She was of a religious bent of mind. She spent her time chanting Lord Vithoba’s name. She would often attend the various religious discourses that were held in their village temple. One day in such a discourse, she heard the orator say, "Life is useless if you cannot find the right Guru. Only a Guru can take you onto the spiritual path". This statement made a profound impact on Yesubai’s mind. She started praying to God to send her the right Guru. In her quest, she met many spiritual people, scholars and sanyasi, but none impressed her. She not only wanted the right Guru, but she built up his image of being a bachelor and one who was free of worldly affairs. Although she intensified her search, it was all in vain. Nevertheless, she kept on with her practice of chanting Lord Vithoba’s name.
One day, a pious Brahmin visited her house. He said, "I am from Pandharpur. I am on my way to visit Audambara (holy place near Wadi where Lord Narasimha Saraswati stayed for sometime, to date his padukas are worshipped there). Could you provide me with food today?" Attracted by the radiance exuding this man, Yesubai gently requested him to take a seat while she prepared his meal. While cooking, Yesubai started to wonder, "This man looks gloriously brilliant. Perhaps he is a saint. Or he may be Lord Vithoba in disguise. But if that is the case, why should he go to Audambara? Anyway, should I request him to become my Guru?"
While serving food, Yesubai started talking with the guest. In the conversation, the guest revealed that his wife and children lived in Pandharpur. Yesubai was once again disappointed. After finishing his meal, the guest looked at Yesubai’s crest-fallen face and inquired, "You look worried. If you tell me, I may be able to solve your problem." Yesubai then unburdened herself. She told him about her search for a bachelor Guru. The guest smilingly blessed her saying, "Your wish will be fulfilled soon. On the first Monday of the next month Kartika, you will receive an invitation where you will meet your Guru". Saying thus, he bid her goodbye. It set Yesubai thinking that her guest must have been an extra ordinary man to predict such details with absolute certainty.
After a couple of weeks, Yesubai’s father received a court notice to appear for a case in Kolhapur. Since the court work would take considerably long time, her father did not like leaving her alone at home so long. He therefore decided to take her along with him to Kolhapur. Thus, father and daughter came to Kolhapur and stayed with some relatives.
One day the women of the household and their neighborhood decided to visit Swami. They revealed their plans to Yesubai who eagerly accompanied them to the mathi. All the women in turn bowed to Swami for his blessings. When Yesubai touched his feet with reverence, he laughingly asked her, "Today is the first Monday of Kartik. Did you meet your bachelor Guru?" Yesubai was rendered speechless. Now she realized who her saintly guest was and how he had accurately predicted this meeting. It was Swami himself who had visited her and arranged for her meeting . He had arranged for her father’s court case to act as an invitation to her to visit Kolhapur. She surrendered to Swami and became an ardent devotee.

Rama Pujari
Swami had yet another pious devotee named Rama Pujari who used to visit him regularly. He had an old mother. He used to plead with her to come and seek Swami's divine blessings. But the old lady was adamant and would criticize his foolishness for worshipping a mere human being. One day Rama visited Swami. He was heart broken at the nasty remarks his mother had made about Swami earlier that day. Suddenly Swami looked at Rama and said, "Do not worry Rama. We will arrange to put a person on the right track." Rama did not understand what Swami was indicating.
A few weeks later, Rama’s mother asked him to take her to Pandharpur so that she could pay her respects to Lord Vithoba. Rama asked Swami for permission and received it immediately. Both mother and son set out to visit Pandharpur. The day they reached was an auspicious day – the eleventh day of the month of Magha. Many devotees had come to pay their respects resulting in a heavy rush. It was impossible for Rama to enter the temple with his mother in tow. He therefore made her sit in a corner and went to request some temple priests to allow them to enter through another entrance used by the staff there.
Rama’s mother had waited for just some time when an old man with a long flowing white beard approached her. He disclosed to her that he too was a devotee of Shri Krishna Saraswati Swami of Kolhapur. He had accompanied Swami to Pandharpur and in fact Swami was seated on the other side of the temple. He then requested the old lady to sit on his shoulder so that he could carry her inside the temple to get the darshan of Lord Panduranga (another name of Lord Vithoba). The mother sat on the old man’s shoulder. Within a second, he carried her inside the temple and stood directly in front of Lord Panduranga’s idol so that the old woman could view the Lord at close quarters. After the darshan, he carried her back and seated her in the same place as before and left hurriedly.
In the meantime, Rama came back disappointed and dejectedly told his mother that in the heavy rush he could not get the special permission and therefore, they would not be able to enter the temple. His mother laughed at him and said, "I have already been into the temple and paid my respects to Lord Panduranga". She narrated to him all what had happened. Rama was almost in tears. He said to his mother, "Were Swami visiting Pandharpur, I would have been informed about it. You criticize Swami all the time, yet he came in disguise to carry you inside the temple". The shocked woman understood her folly and felt ashamed of her nasty behavior.
On their return to Kolhapur, she visited the mathi and sincerely begged for repentance. She totally surrendered to Swami. Now Rama understood what Swami had meant by saying, "We will arrange for a man to put her on the right track".

Rama Mang
Rama Mang was a devotee who used to visit the mathi daily. He envied Krishna Lad for getting the chance to carry Swami on his shoulder. Rama used to silently wish he could get the same chance at least once. He never expressed his wish to anyone, not even to Swami. He was under the impression that no one would let him fulfill his wish as he belonged to a lower caste. But how anything could be hidden from the omniscient Swami. One day Swami made a strange request to Rama. He said, "Give me a horse and your wish will be fulfilled". Rama was ecstatic.
He purchased a small built horse. It was simply perfect for Swami to sit on. Rama handed the horse over to the mathi to the delight of the disciples and devotees. Every evening, Swami would dress up in a white kurta (long shirt) with a saffron shawl perched on his shoulder and a green cap covering his head. Swami would ride on the horse with a devotee holding high a colorful decorative umbrella over his head. Other devotees would walk behind him carrying various other religious paraphernalia. They would all form a procession singing devotional songs in chorus, especially the chant "Digambara Digambara Shripad Vallabh Digambara" This colorful procession was a sight to behold.

The procession to Wadi
One day Swami expressed his desire to go thus, all the way to Wadi. Therefore the entire procession proceeded to Wadi with Swami leading up front. That day Ram happened to be holding the reins of the horse. As they neared Wadi, Swami asked him to carry him on his shoulder. Thus Swami fulfilled Ram’s heartfelt wish.
When Swami and his devotees reached Wadi, they first proceeded for a ritual dip in the sangam (confluence where the river Krishna meets river Panchganga). They then went to offer their worship to Shri Narasimha Saraswati’s padukas.
After their darshan, they immediately proceeded to Shirole village. At the outskirts of the village, Swami stopped the procession. A while later, a woman carrying a water pitcher passed by. Swami called out to her, "Yamabai, please come here. Take this coconut. You have my blessings. You will soon have a son. You may go now".

In Miraj
Swami with his entourage proceeded to Miraj. They went directly to the house of Malambhat Joshi, a distant relative of Swami. Malambhat’s wife was seriously ill. She had a long history of abdominal swelling with severe pain and cramps. Medicines had proved futile. Every moment she prayed earnestly, "O Lord Datta! Please save me".
When Swami entered the Joshi household with his devotees, Malambhat was very happy to see them. He bowed reverentially at Swami’s feet and said, "Brother, I have heard many beautiful stories about you. I have heard that you are known as Datta Swami. Please help and save my wife". Swami went to the backyard of the house that had many trees. From one curd-apple tree, Swami plucked a few leaves and handed them to Malambhat to extract its juice and give it to his wife to drink. Swami’s instructions were carried out immediately.
After a few minutes, she passed a large amount of urine and she recovered immediately. The lady who had been sick and bed-ridden for so many months got up and bowed gratefully to Swami. Neither Swami nor the devotees had eaten anything since they started from Kolhapur two days ago. Swami said to the lady, "We are all very hungry, can you feed us something?" The lady enthusiastically cooked and served a hearty meal to all. However, Swami did not eat anything.

Annabua Mirajkar’s samadhi
After this visit, Swami and the devotees proceeded to pay their respects at the samadhi of the famous saint Annabua Mirajkar. This tomb is situated in the center of the city of Miraj. As Swami entered the place, a voice from within the tomb spoke, "Krishna! I am so happy to see you here. Seeing you, I felt as if Shri Swami Samartha has come to meet me". Swami replied, "Anna, You really flatter me! But then, both of us are one and the same". Many devotees at the samadhi temple heard this conversation between the two sages. The news that Anna had spoken from his grave with Swami spread through the entire city like wild fire. People rushed to procure Swami’s blessings – for health, wealth, employment, marriage, and children. There was such a heavy rush that Swami could not get a moment free.
Around noon, amidst the crowd, Swami was heard murmuring to himself, "I must go to see Bhaskar". And lo behold! He disappeared then and there from the sight, in front of the pushing crowd. There was a panic amidst his devotees. They could not fathom where Swami could have gone and for what reason. They were scared to face Tarabai’s wrath, in case she came to know that they had lost Swami. She would perhaps commit suicide. Helplessly, they started to softly chant the mantra, "Digambara Digambara Shripad Vallabh Digambara", praying fervently for Swami’s return.

Bhaskar
At the very same time, on the banks of the river, a pious man was conducting a charity feast. He was feeding the learned Brahmins and the priests. Nearby, a young man named Bhaskar was carrying out a rigorous penance and religious rituals and had been doing so since many days to get the darshan of Lord Dattatreya, and to procure his blessings. He prayed earnestly with great devotion and fervor besieging Lord Dattatreya, "O Lord! You who pervade everyone are being. You are my father, my mother, my brother, and my relative. You, who are everything to me, are known as the one who rushes to him whosoever calls earnestly, please come here. Please show yourself to me". Exactly at that moment, a stranger having the appearance of an Avadhoota showed up at that very spot.
The persons in charge of the charity feast tried to oust the stranger. Witnessing the commotion, Bhaskar intervened, "Please serve him the meal. I will bear the cost". Naturally Bhaskar’s kind words made the host feel ashamed. The food was then served to the Avadhoota and to Bhaskar. After the meal, both the Avadhoota and Bhaskar went to a lonely spot where the young man bowed to the sage. He asked him questions on yoga (union of man and God) and meditation (the technique to achieve the same). To all the questions put forth by Bhaskar, the Avadhoota replied, "Come to Kolhapur and ask Shri Krishna Saraswati Swami. However, you won’t b able to see him in this form". So saying, the Avadhoota disappeared from that place.
Swami reappeared amidst his now nervous devotees who were engrossed in their chants begging for Swami’s return. The moment the devotees saw Swami, they were once again cheerful and in high spirits. Swami then led them back to Kolhapur.
Next day, Bhaskar came to Kolhapur to meet Swami. Swami blessed him and gave him a spiritual initiation. Needless to say that Bhaskar achieved an ultimate position in yoga.

Swami takes his devotee to Pandharpur
There was a devotee who used to visit the mathi daily. He owned fertile fields that gave him very good yield. He was therefore very prosperous. He lived happily in a beautiful house with his two wives and many children. He was a pious man and very kind hearted. He gave lots of money to charity. His wives did not like this. They hatched a plan with their brothers and got the control of his business transferred into their hands. Then onwards every month, they gave him a paltry sum to meet his personal expenses. It caused him a lot of hardship and sadness. Nevertheless, he would spend the little money he would get for charitable causes.
One day, he happened to see some pilgrims going to Pandharpur. He also had the urge to go. He went to the mathi and asked Swami for permission to undertake the pilgrimage. He got it at once. He took a few sets of clothes and started walking, as he had no money to hire a bullock cart. As he reached the outskirts of Kolhapur, he saw a farmer atop a bullock cart. The farmer called out to him and told him that if he was going to Pandharpur, he could hitch a ride with him. The devotee replied, "I too am going to Pandharpur, but I have no money to pay you". The farmer good-naturedly ribbed him, "Who is asking for the money? I want some company to Pandharpur and back". The devotee was more than happy to get the lift.
The farmer was a jolly good fellow. He met all the expenses of their food and lodgings throughout the journey. They also were lucky to have a good darshan of Lord Vithoba at his temple at Pandharpur. In fact, the entire trip was a pleasant experience for both the men. When they returned, the devotee requested the farmer to come to his house, so that he could repay the expenses he had borne on his behalf. But the farmer refused. He told the devotee that the question of his coming to the devotee’s house did not arise as he was not going into the city and was proceeding elsewhere. What’s more, bearing his expenses was his pleasure entirely. But the devotee was adamant that he would not let the farmer go without the payment. He requested him to wait at that very spot on the outskirts of the city and hurried to return with the money.
When he came back with the money, to his utter dismay, the farmer was not there. It dawned on him that throughout the enjoyable trip, he had not even had the courtesy to ask the farmer his name or whereabouts. Feeling very guilty and dejected, he sat there with a heavy heart. He sat there throughout the night till sleep overpowered him. Just before dawn, Swami appeared in his dream and said, "My son, go home now. You have sat long enough waiting for the farmer? In any case, he will not come back". The devotee now realized that it was Swami who had come in the guise of the farmer to give him a pleasant trip to Pandharpur and back.

What we call miracles are the normal ways of functioning of the God realised ones. The Risaldar of that area, a Muslim person, wanted to test the Swami by offering him a 'Chilum' (an earthen smoking pipe) without tobacco in it and asked him to smoke. Swami Samarth started smoking the empty Chilum after lighting it as if nothing had happened. Realising him to be an advanced spiritual person, the Risaldar apologised and made arrangements for his stay in the house of one Cholappa. It is in this small house that Swami Samarth lived upto his last.
Soon, the name of Swami Samarth as a Spiritual Master spread all around and devotees came for taking his blessings. The ordinary people did not understand many of his gestures and mystic statements, which he used to make cryptically, although their meanings became apparent on later dates.
He treated Muslims, Christians and Parsees all alike. His Kindness was always bestowed on the poor, needy and the people at the lowest rung of the society. Both Hindus and Muslim festivals like Dusshehra and Moharram etc. used to be celebrated by Him. As in Shirdi, Thursday became a special day of celebration at Akkalkot. Like Shirdi Sai Baba, Swami Samarth of Akkalkot was fond of mass feeding. Once, on his visit to a place called Rampur, a devotee named Rawaji, to celebrate his visit, cooked food for 50 people. However, hearing the news of Swami Samarth's arrival hundreds of people from the neighbouring villages started rushing to the village. Seeing such a large number of people at his doorstep Rawaji became visibly panicky. Moved by his plight, Swami Samarth asked Rawaji to get some empty baskets. When the baskets were brought from the market, idols of all the deities like Khandoba, Annapurna, etc were put in them and food materials like chapatis (bread) etc. were piled over them. Bawaji and his wife were asked to carry these baskets and take three rounds around the Tulsi plant. After that, they were asked to serve food from these baskets to the guest without looking into them. When food were being served, Rawaji and his wife were amazed to see that the baskets never exhausted even after a few hundred people had been served. After all the people who had come finished their meal, Swami Samarth took his meal. This is known as 'Annapurna Siddhi'.

Swami Samarth had the capacity to read the minds of all the people coming to him and also was able to know about their past and future. Baba Saheb Jadhav, one of his great devotees one day came to meet the Master. Seeing him suddenly Swami Samarth said "Oh Potter! There is a summon coming in your name”. The potter being in the close circle of Swami Samarth understood the meaning of this sentence and begged of the Swami to save him from the approaching death so that he could continue to serve him (the Master). Moved by his devotion Swami Samarth looked-up towards the sky and muttered something as if he was addressing to someone who was invisible. Suddenly, he pointed his hand towards a bull passing nearby and said in a loud voice "go to the bull". In the presence of a large number of devotees, the bull instantly fell dead. Jadhav, with a fresh lease of life, devoted himself totally to the service of Swami Samarth thereafter. Similarly, A European engineer from Solapur visited the Swami with the earnest hope of having a son. As he approached Swami Samarth, the latter just looked at him and told that he would have a son within a year. That is what exactly happened.

The Sadgurus or the Spiritual Masters always endeavors to change the quality of men that encounter them. Besides bestowing material benefit, they try to uplift them spiritually. Once a Jewish doctor, who was working as an eye specialist in the J.J. Hospital, Bombay met Swami Samarth. The doctor was very proud of his professional competence. Seeing him Swami Samarth asked "tell me doctor, how many of the eye patients you have treated have lost their eye sights for ever"'. This sentence made a tremendous impact on the doctor. He realised that many people had lost their sights forever even if they had been treated by him. His ego immediately vanished and thereafter he became a devotee of Swami Samarth. After retirement the doctor settled-down at Akkalkot and served the Master till his last.
It is said that a touchstone can convert an ordinary metal to gold. The Spiritual Masters are such touchstones that they can convert any ordinary metal not to that of gold but to that of a touchstone. They are capable of giving spiritual life to any person in a fraction of a second by a touch, a look, a word or even by a mere thought. A person like Ramanand Bidkar who had lived an immoral life for a long period was converted to a Saint called Bidkar Maharaj by the kind grace of Swami Samarath, who by one grace i.e. Drishti Diksha evolved him spiritually. Under his guidance Sri Balappa Maharaj, Shri Gangadhar Maharaj, Sri Gajanan Maharaj and many others rose to spiritual eminence and contributed a lot to the society.
After serving the poor, curing the sick and helping the spiritual seekers over a few decades, Swami Samarth one day suddenly announced that the time had come for him to go out of his physical existence. By Hindu calendar It was Chaitra Sudha trayodasi, Shaka 1800 i.e. the year 1878 AD Tuesday at 4 PM. At this time he seated himself in Padmasana (Lotus Posture) and uttered his last words - "no one should weep I shall always be present at all places and I shall respond to every call of the devotees"". Shri Sai Baba of Shirdi had also said exactly the same thing before his Mahasamadhi.
Just before he had left his gross body, one devotee named Keshav Nayak who was emotionally charged, asked "Maharaj, since you are going, who will give us protection?". Swami Samarth gave him a pair of his sandals to worship. He told him "in future I will be staying at Shirdi in district Ahmednagar". Another devotee, Krishna Ali Bagkar decided to go to Akkalkot and worship the padukas of Swami Samarth. Thereafter he got a dream appearance of Swami Samarth who told him "now I am staying at Shirdi, go there and worship me". Bagkar went to Shirdi where he stayed for six months. Later, when he wanted to take leave of Shri Sai and go to Akkalkot again Shri Sai told him "what is there in Akkalkot, Maharaj of Akkalkot is staying here". Bagkar realised that there is no difference between Swami Samarth and Shri Sai Baba of Shirdi as he recalled his earlier dream.

The divine game (leela) of Swami Samarth did not end with his Maha Samadhi (shedding his mortal coil). His devotees continue to experience the miracles of his visible and invisible help even till today. It is exactly like the experience received by the devotees of Sai Baba of Shirdi after his Mahasamadhi in 1918. Many people have authenticated his appearance in physical form before them. These people are not the faith-blind rural folk. Many of them are well educated people like doctors, educationists etc. For example, Dr. S.V.Marathe, a private medical practitioner of Pune once underwent treatment in a chest Hospital at a place called Aundh in 1964. Many of his friends were anxious to come and visit him. At this juncture, Swami Samarth appeared before many of his friends in a dream and gave the same message to all of them. He asked them not to worry about Dr.Marathe, as he was under His (Swami Samarth's) protection and also not to come to Aundh.
Hundreds of devotees continue to have miraculous experience about the Perfect Master even today.
But his miracles and those of Shri Sainath are so alike that one would be drawn to the conclusion that they are not two masters but are one, and the ONLY ONE TRUTH.

Shri Balappa stayed at Murgod, a place sanctified by the residence of Shri Chidambar Dixit, for three days. Thereafter he decided to go to Ganagapur (Karnataka) a place of pilgrimage associated with Lord Dattatreya. Here he performed ‘Anushthan’ (religious austerities) for two months. After devout and sincere service, a saintly person appeared in his dream and said, “ Go to Akkalkot and serve Shri Swami Samartha”. When Shri Balappa got up he noticed a piece of paper under his bed with a message,” Don’t be hasty”. Accordingly he stayed on for two more months in Ganagapur and continued his ‘ Anushthana’.
He left Ganagapur for Akkalkot amidst many auspicious signs. On the way he felt tired but all his fatigue vanished at the very utterance of the name of Shri Swami Samartha. At that time Shri Swami Maharaj was camping in Khas-baug garden on the outskirts of Akkalkot. Shri Balappa purchased sugar candy and went for ‘Darshan’. On reaching there he fell at the lotus feet of Shri Swami Maharaj. At the very first sight of Shri Balappa, Shri Swami Maharaj recognized His beloved disciple and was overjoyed, as a father would be on meeting his son after years of separation. To express His joy Swami Maharaj started embracing the trees in the garden. Every one witnessing this incidence felt that the new arrival must be a great soul.
Shri Swami Maharaj was always wandering from place to place in the vicinity of Akkalkot. He always moved about at His will. It is noteworthy that so long as Shri Balappa was engaged in Akkalkot in His ‘Anushthana’ Shri Swami Maharaj did not cross the boundaries.
Shri Balappa used to go for the ‘Darshan’ of Shri Swami Maharaj once during a day and spent rest of his time in ‘Anushthana’. One day an attendant complained to Shri Swami Maharaj that Shri Balappa spends his time away from Him, counting beads (In the rosary) Shri Swami Maharaj said, "My devotees, however far away they may be, are always by my side.”
Shri Swami Maharaj used to say very often to Shri Balappa “ Become Guru. I say become Guru (Master), I will make you like myself”. By several indications, Shri Swami Maharaj suggested that He was going to make Shri Balappa His spiritual heir. Shri Balappa too was a worthy disciple. He was a paragon of ‘faith and service unto Master’. He literally walked hundreds of miles to reach at the lotus feet of Swami Samarth and ever since remained in His service till the end. He never even once returned to his native place. He always kept himself uninterruptedly in Shri Swami Maharaj's attendance. He followed his self-imposed rule so much so that, during nighttime he would tie a tuft of his hair to the bed on which Swami Maharaj slept, The idea was to stay awake at any hour of the night in case his master needed him. Swami Maharaj too loved him like his son, offered him divine guidance from time to time and saw to it that he practiced spiritual disciplines and penance.
Before leaving the mortal body and entering the state of samadhi Shri Swami Maharaj had delegated responsibilities to various disciples, and had given Prasad ( blessing in form of a gift) to them and guided them individually. Shri Balappa how ever was kept out of all this. Thinking that he was unworthy of Masters grace, Shri Balappa felt very sad and in that dejected mood he asked Shri Swami Maharaj " Everybody' has received your grace and prasad, will you not bless me ?" On hearing this from His nearest and dearest disciple Shri Swami Maharaj became meditative. He took off His ring which was engraved with the letters ‘Shri Swami Samartha’ and put it on Shri Balappa's finger saying " I am giving you my insignia of authority verily ,my seal." and then ordained him to continue propagating His message eternally. Swami Maharaj blessed him and gave His staff and loin cloth . He then handed over all His favorite things to Shri Balappa and put His Ekmukhi Rudraksha (sacred bead worn around neck symbolic of spiritual authority.),in Shri Balappa's neck. He also gave Shri Balappa His holy Paduka and ordained him to establish a Math as a seat of Guru tradition.
By appointing Shri Balappa as His heir Shri Swami Maharaj thus continued the ancient Guru-shishya tradition of masters issuing forth from Adiguru Dattatreya, Shripad Shrivallabh, Narsimha Saraswati and Shri Swami Samartha. Later Shri Balappa Maharaj established a math in Akkalkot, which is now known as Balappa Math or Gurumandir.
After the Mahaniryan of Shri Swami Samartha Shri Balappa Maharaj was overwhelmed with grief and for him life became unbearable. Once when Shri Balappa was in a depressed state of mind, Shri Swami Samartha in a vision gave ‘Darshan’ to him in physical form and said “ I am present in my ‘sandals’ which I have given you. My grace is there. There alone I shall accept your service hereafter. Attend upon me as before.”
Before setting up a ‘Math’ at Akkalkot, Balappa Maharaj traveled all over the country and visited temples, Maths and holy places and propagated the message of Shri Swami Maharaj.
Balappa Maharaj's mother tongue was Kannad but he knew a little of Marathi also. As the result of his power and the blessings of Shri Swami Maharaj, everyone who came to him was attracted by his purity and holiness.
In Shaka 1822 i.e. A.D.1900 Shri Balappa Maharaj traveled through Marathwada and established a ‘Math’ in town Jalna.
The fame of Shri Balappa Maharaj spread far and wide and crowds of devotees desirous of his ‘Darshan’ could be seen till midnight at the place where he was camping. Wherever he went he was received with great devotion and the days of his visit were treated as festivities.
Shri Balappa Maharaj established a ‘Math’ at Akkalkot in the heart of the city. After the completion of the Math, on 8th February 1905, Shri Balappa Maharaj ,entered the Sanyasa-state and assumed the name Shri Bhramhanand Swami.
On the day of his Mahaniryan (Passing away) Shri Balappa Maharaj took bath as usual and sat on his seat. He looked very bright and lustrous. All the devotees were seated around him. The whole atmosphere was very solemn. He had concentrated his attention on the portrait of Shri Swami Maharaj, which was just above his seat. He had the ‘blessed’ rosary of beads in his hands and was uninterruptedly repeating guru's holy mantra. None disturbed him even by his breath. On Tuesday 15th March, 1910 (Fourth day of the bright half of the month Phalgun Shake 1831) at 7-15 a.m. Shri Balappa Maharaj became one with infinite. His Samadhi ( the cell where body is put to rest) lies in the sanctum sanctorum of Gurumandir at Akkalkot

Maloji Bhonsle was the ruler of the principality (Samsthan) of Akkalkot. He was a great devotee of Swami Samarth. There were occasions when the Swami too walked freely into the royal palace. The Rajah used to visit Cholappa's mutt [temple] every day to pay his respects to the Swami.
Once, on the festive occasion of his birthday, the Rajah came, with all his royal insignia and pageantry to receive the blessings of the Swami. The prince wore his crown and all his ornaments and came riding on his elephant, accompanied by his wives, attendants and his guard.
He walked into the mutt and bowed before the Swami. The latter did not at all like the show of the Rajah. But he kept silent and did not even glance at the royal visitor. After a few moments of embarassment the Rajah tried to gain the attendon of the Swami and so he again bowed to His feet.
The Swami was enraged and at once slapped the Rajah. The crown fell to a distance of twenty feet under the impact of the blow! The stupefied and shocked prince stood dumb, feeling his cheek. Then the Swami said, "Your royal dignity is proper only to your palace and your assembly of ministers. This is not the place for that. We can make any number of toy kings like you."
Ever after, the Rajah used to leave his coach three or four furlongs away from Cholappa's mutt and walk like any other visitor, all the way into the august presence of the Swami, and he used to dress himself plainly, as an expression of humility.

Once the Swami visited the royal palace and the Rajah received him with due respect and took him to the family shrine. The Rajah and the saint sat on a swing. The priest was grinding a sandalwood into paste.
At that moment a rat came there and tried to eat the ghee in the lamp intended for worship. The priest, enraged at the desecration, threw the heavy sandalwood at the rat forcefully. The poor creature was badly hit and it died on the spot.
The priest was happy and said, "That's it! That's what you deserve!" As he picked up the dead rat and was going out to throw it away, the Swami snatched the dead rat from him and started playing with it, passing it to and fro through a big iron link in the chain that supported the swing.
Then he took it in his palm and said to it lovingly, "Get up dear one, and go your way!" Then the rat came to life and immediately ran away. The Rajah and the priest were astounded by the miracle.
The Swami taught them the law of love that Siddhartha once taught a hunter, that the swan wounded by a hunter's arrow belonged rather to Siddhartha who saved it than to the one who tried to take away its life.
One night even when all his devotees were seated around his couch the Swami fell asleep and started snoring. A devotee [named] Govindarao had a doubt as to how a real yogi could sleep so deeply.
For, in books on yoga he read that a real yogi never sleeps. He wondered whether the Swami was really a yogi at all.
The moment the thought flashed in Govindarao's mind the Swami opened his eyes and said, "Ae Sonar! Your doubts are baseless." The next moment he was again snoring. Evidently, in spite of that the Swami was fully awake, awake even to the unuttered thoughts of those around him!

Once in the sweltering heat of a summer noon Shri Swami Samarth walked into the house of Babaji Bhat and asked for cool drinking water. The lady of the house was very happy to see the Swami grace her with his request.
But unfortunately the well in her backyard was completely dry. The water in the house was not so cool. And she did not want to say "No" to the great saint. So she immediately set out for the neighboring house to fetch water for [the] Swami.
The Swami saw her and laughed loudly, in his characteristic manner, holding his big belly with both of his hands and said, "There is plenty of water in your well. Come with me and I shall show you!"
He then led her to the well and like an innocent child urinated near the well in her very presence. At once water swelled in the well almost to the full. Even today many of his devotees take a look at the celebrated well.

Once a lady [named] Srimathi Sivabai brought her son to the Swami and said, "My son has lost his sight from the moment he was invested with the sacred thread. Please grant him sight again!"
The Swami replied, "Shortly five devils are arriving here to test me. As soon as they arrive, his sight will be restored."
Just as the Swami said, in a short while, five short and sturdy Brahmins arrived. Their dress and ornaments indicated that they were eminent scholars. They came to test the Swami.
But afer arriving in his presence they started discussing among themselves in Kannada and Sanskrit languages as to how they should proceed to test the Swami's worth. After consultation, they bowed to the Swami with feigned humility.
Then the Swami said to the blind boy, "Ganesh, come here! Speak out what questions these devils have in their minds and answer them!" The boy stood before the Swami and, bowing to him, said in surprise, "How do I know it?"
The Swami smiled and, saying "Is that so?" took the garland from his own neck and placed it around the boy's neck. Then he picked up two flowers and touched his eyes with them. The boy felt a powerful thrill, as though some great energy had passed through his spine.
He at once stood up and promptly spoke out all the questions the visitors had in their minds and answered them all himself, citing authorities from all renowned scriptures. The visitors were dumbfounded.
They quietly bowed to the Swami and stood up to leave. The Swami at once flew into a rage and addressed the chief of the visitors, "You have come to test me only because you heard that I am accepting food from people of all castes indiscriminately. And you have tested me! Now I tell you this. You were born by the illicit contact of your mother with a man named Imambaksh Musalman!"
The Pandit at once realized how perilous it was to test the Swami and begged his pardon. The Swami at once calmed down and told the pandits that hearty repentance, like the holy Ganges, can completely purify a man. He exhorted them to mend their ways in [the] future.
The blind boy regained his sight from that moment. Besides, he also retained all the scholarship with which the Swami had blessed him! This incident was personally witnessed and recorded by Vishnubua Brahmachari.

Vishnubua Brahmachari was a great scholar, vedantin and orator. Charmed by his excellence, the Rajah of Akkalkot once invited him to his court.
Vishnubua came to Akkalkot and one day he put a very recondite question in Vedanta to the Swami, "What is Brahmatadaakaara vritti?
The Swami smiled and kept quiet. The Brahmachari felt that it is not proper to call the old man who could not answer his question "a swami" or "a master."
Besides, he went on proclaiming to his friends outside that the Swami could not answer his questions. But the Swami did not mind it. One day the Brahmachari dreamt that thousands of scorpions were moving towards him and one of them had even stung him.
He screamed so loudly that a Parsi devotee who slept by him woke him up and asked him why he cried. The Brahmachari described his dream.
After a few days, the Brahmachari again visited the Swami and asked him what "Brahmatadaakaara vritti" meant. The Swami smiled and said, "Stupid! You screamed at the very sight of a thousand scorpions in a mere dream. How dare you speak of Vedanta? Do you think that Brahmatadaakaara vritti is such a simple thing? It cannot be attained through eloquent discourses or verbal jugglery. Get out of here!"
When the Brahmachari visited him on a later occasion, not only did he explain the metaphysical concept lucidly but also bestowed on him the actual experience and made him a saint! Only then did the Brahmachari realize that the Swami was an avatar of Lord Dattatreya.

The British Governor and some other distinguished men happened to read about the fame and greatness of the Swami in the local papers and were attracted to take His darshan. But they felt it below their dignity to go for His darshan and it was equally impossible to summon Him to them.
So they sent an expert photographer to get His pictures. The photographer tried to secure the Swami's permission to take His pictures but the Swami never heeded the recommendations of His devotees.
The photographer at last decided to take the pictures without His consent and, keeping everything ready, he waited for the proper pose; but when he got it, before he could click the camera, the Swami would turn away or move.
This frustrating experience repeated itself ten to twenty times before he could somehow take one picture. He was immensely pleased that he could successfully deceive the Swami. He immediately placed the photo-print in front of the Swami, mockingly saying, "What do you say now for this?"
The Swami pushed the picture towards one of His devotees as indifferently and said, "Tell me what you see there!" The devotee eagerly looked at it and said, "This is the picture of Sri Rama. How beautiful!"
Then the Swami pushed it to another devotee and repeated the same question. The man said, "It is the picture of the Supreme Goddess!" It was passed on to many others and one of them found it to be Lord Sankara in meditation; another saw Lord Vishnu; a fifth saw Vitthal of Pandarpur; [a] sixth saw Khandoba; many more saw their chosen deities in the same picture!
The photographer lost his temper and wondered whether they were all mad; for could they not recognize the Swami's picture? So he said to the Swami, "You see it for yourself and tell me!"
The Swami looked at it with feigned attention and seriousness, then burst into laughter and said, "Oh, do I look like this!" and returned the picture to the photographer.
He was struck dumb with wonder to find in it a picture of a monkey! He at once realized that the Swami performed this miracle to stamp out his ego and pride and sought His pardon.
He once again requested the Swami to permit him to take another picture saying, "Your picture is sacred and is worthy of being kept in everyone's house. Please permit us to serve the people in this and thereby profit ourselves." Then the Swami consented and the picture came off nicely this time!

It is believed that Shri Swami Samartha appeared in Akkalkot in 1857. The temple of Shri Nrisimha Saraswati is of Dattatreya. So swami is believed to be the incarnation of Lord Datta
The popular belief is that he came to Mangalvedha during 1838 and stayed there for 13 years. He used to stay in a farm there. From Mangalvedha he stayed at Mohol for five years, then he came to Solapur and finally to Akkalkot.
After he was sure that he had completed his worldly duties and had guided his disciples rightly, he decided to go for Samadhi. His disciple Chollapa accordingly began to make arrangements. Finally he took Samadhi in 1878.
One account put forth by devotees asserts that after traveling in the Himalayas, the Swami sat in Samadhi for three hundred years in a dense forest. He became completely covered by anthills, and a large tree grew beside him. Once a woodcutter came to the forest and chose that particular tree for cutting. Laying his axe first to the anthill, he was surprised to see blood oozing from it. Pulling down the anthill, he discovered the Swami beneath it.
Roused from Samadhi, the Swami declared the incident to be Divinely ordained as it was time for him to go into the world and continue his mission. The Swami is said to have then wandered for a hundred years, performing many miracles, before appearing in Akkalkot.
The Swami was unpredictable, appearing mad to many, and full of miracles. He loved his devotees with a great passion, and like other Adepts of the Crazy Wise style, he was paradoxically full of both human and Divine qualities.
Once, when asked who he was, he replied, "I am this infinite universe; I am everywhere. Yet my favorite resorts are Sakyodri, Girnar, Kasi, Mathapur, Karveer, Panchaleswar, Audumbar, Karanjnagar, Narasimhvadi, and Gangapur."
The Temple
A Temple was erected under the Banyan tree where he used to sit. His footwear have bees kept there. Thousands of his followers visit this place throughout the year.
Around 70 to 80 years after he ended his incarnations his disciples and followers set up Ashrams all over the India. The Samadhi Matha (Monastery), The Matha under the Banyan Tree, Shri Balappa Matha, The Matha of JoshiBua, Raja Rai Rayan Matha are the five famous places connected to Shri Swami Samartha.

Akkalkot Swami Samarth
This unfathomable Divine Power was playing its divine sport at Akkalkot for the special cause of Dharma. It arrived in Akkalkot (which literally means town of intellect) for some specific cause. Omniscient Shri Swami Samartha of course knew that the Dark Age of Adharma (Kaliyuga) was nearing its end. He descended in Akkalkot with His own volition to establish a ‘Seat of Satya Dharma" at this place, from where the mission of its revival was to commence.
Shri Swami Samartha was omniscient and read even secret thoughts of anybody. He used to convince this with proofs. Shri Swami Maharaj's talks and preaching were extremely enigmatic and cryptic. At times He would repeat some words or smaller sentences four or five times. It would become difficult for anybody to comprehend the meaning of His utterances at that time, but soon the message would become clear through some incident. In this manner He would foretell about incidents to come. Some times Shri Swami Samartha answered queries of some devotees with actions. Discernable and experienced disciples could understand the message thus conveyed by Shri Swami Maharaj only after some reflection. Shri Swami Maharaj offered advice to His devotees according to their spiritual aptitude. This is the reason why one may notice apparently contradictory teachings. While one disciple is asked to stop idol worship, other one is gifted an image/idol of his choice to be worshiped.
It is inborn nature of great souls to see that everybody progresses, the piety in everyone grows and everybody practices Satya Dharma. Shri Swami Maharaj alleviated the sufferings of the afflicted and fulfilled the desires of many distressed. To some He imparted the lessons in Yoga and to some He would order to establish a Math (Hermitage). He would severely reprimand some for their misconduct and ask the sincere disciples to stay in His holy company. During the span of His stay of 22 years in Akkalkot, He continually played such divine sports. Even after He left the body, He actually appeared in person to guide His close disciples.
Shri Swami Maharaj treated all disciples with same love and care. He never harbored the concept of untouchability, which was common in the Hindu social structure. He made no distinction between the Hindus or Muslims. Even today people belonging to all religious faiths respect Him. He accepted food at any devotee's house irrespective of his caste or social status. Whenever a devotee from lower class came to seek His darshan, He would ask the devotee to come closer and offer him prasad. i.e. symbol of blessings in the form of sweets, eatables or clothes, with His own hands.
Shri Swami Maharaj treated the rich and poor with the same affection. Once, Shrimant Maloji Raje, the ruler of Akkalkot, came to visit Shri Swami Maharaj seated in a howdah on an elephant. When the ruler was bowing at the feet, Shri Swami Samartha slapped him on the face and said, “ Don’t show your greatness to me. I have seen many such kings that merely belong in the game of chess.” Thereafter Shrimant Malojiraje always made it a point to come for Swami Maharaj's darshan on feet and scrupulously avoided any signs of his being the ruler.
If He ever came across a stone painted as God along the side of a road, He would sarcastically pass urine on it or at times even defecate near it. Shri Swami Maharaj through His actions denied the superstitious traditions that were prevalent in the contemporary society and laid the foundation for the revival of the Satya Dharma.
Whenever in delightful mood, He would accept all kinds of services from His valets with pleasure. But during His bad mood, no attendant could dare to go before Him. If this happened to be Aarti time then He would not allow even Aarti (Singing of devotional songs) to be performed properly. Some times He would throw away even Aarti lamps (lighted from cotton wicks soaked in cow ghee). It was customary to sing only one stanza if Shri Swami Maharaj showed one finger, sing two stanzas if He signaled two fingers and sing complete Aarti if Shri Swami Maharaj was in a cheerful mood.
Shri Swami Samartha loved dogs very much. But if He saw a cat he would drive it away calling it ‘unfaithful’. He loved cows.
He would mostly deny permission to go on pilgrimage to His devotees. One of His disciples had a desire of visiting Benares on pilgrimage and sought Swami Maharaj's permission. Shri Swami Maharaj repeated a verse, which meant: ‘The dust at the feet of the saints alone is my holy place!’ This way He suggested that it was not necessary to travel to far places on pilgrimage on the contrary being in the service of holy men fulfilled the purpose.
Once a disciple asked Him in worried tone, “ Maharaj what is my fate, what will happen to me?” Shri Swami Maharaj shot back, “ What? Do you not have bulls?” Probably He wanted to suggest that any person who was prepared to sweat and toil would not lack any thing in life.
The incidence related with the performance of Yajnya in Akkalkot by Shri Swami Maharaj before his final departure is noteworthy. He performed a Yajnya in Jangam Math (a temple belonging to Lingayat community) at Akkalkot. He ordered His disciples to arrange 500 cow dung cakes over the Shivalingam. A holy Fire was made and cow's ghee, coconuts, wheat, rice were offered in it. When asked, “ Maharaj what are you doing?” He replied “I am performing Yajnya of my Deha i.e. outward body.“
Shri Chidambar Dixit from Murgod (Dist. Dharwar, Karnataka), a great saint, once performed a Soma- Yajnya. It was a historic event. Shri Swami Maharaj was in charge of the stock of Ghee. Miraculously even after using enormous amounts of it during the performance of Yajnya and while food-distribution to innumerable visitors the stocks of Ghee would never diminish. This is the event that occurred 60 years prior to Swami Maharaj's appearance in Akkalkot. Shri Swami Samartha often used to say “ I served ghee in the Yajnya of Chidambar Dixit” .
In fact, the very first Day when Shri Swami Maharaj appeared in Akkalkot, He showed the vision of Holy Fire. His arrival heralds the beginning of the fundamental and positive change in the universal spiritual thinking. Shri Swami Samartha sat at the entrance gate of Akkalkot for three days. On the fourth day a sentry– Ahemad Ali Khan asked him “Do you smoke Hookha?”, Shri Swami Maharaj replied “ Yes I do”. The commander had thought of fooling around with Shri Swami Samartha. He offered Swami Maharaj an empty smoking pipe but He accepted the pipe and took a puff. No sooner than he puffed there was smoke and flame emanating from the pipe.
This was the first vision of fire brought about by Swami Maharaj in Akkalkot. The empty pipe symbolized the debilitated state of Fire Worship. Shri Swami Samartha produced fire indicating that a Divine avatar capable of rejuvenating the ancient Vedic science of Fire would appear at Akkalkot in future. The ‘empty pipe and fire’ was no magic. Swami Maharaj Himself was ‘Fire- personified’. Fire worship is the basic eternal discipline. He demonstrated this the movement he stepped in to Akkalkot.
On being questioned just prior to His Mahasamadhi by one of His close disciples
“ When will you recover from your illness?” Shri Swami Maharaj replied, “ I will reappear when the hills and the mountains will speak and Pandhari will burn” Here too, through this cryptic remark, Swami Maharaj has given an indication of the future happening. He indicated the commencement of Satya Yuga and rejuvenation of the Vedas. Vedic Mantras were to reverberate through out the world and Fire worship which is the basis of Eternal religion of the Vedas was to prevail through out the planet.
During the same time Swami Maharaj asked one of the disciples, Shripad Bhat to sit digging the roots of the banayan tree - The banayan tree (Vata) is a symbol of Satya Dharma and Vedas. Swami Maharaj himself used to sit under a banayan tree most of the time.
About eight days prior to Mahasamadhi Shri Swami Samartha visited a small village named Naganhalli where looking in the direction of West, He repeated the following praise of Lord Shiva,
Shivahar Shankar Namami Shankar Shivashankar Shambho I
He Girijapate Bhavani Shankar Shivashankar Shambho II
(“Oh Shambho, I bow unto thee who art auspicious and grantest prosperity and confenest happiness.”)
One can now understand the significance of this incidence. Shivapuri, the abode of Lord Shiva Himself, is located a few kilometers west of Naganhalli. Shivapuri the holy Yajnya Nagar was founded by Paramsadguru Shree Gajanan Maharaj to reiterate the ancient Vedic message of Yajnya and Agnihotra. It was here that Lord Shiva appeared to Shree during the great Somayaga performed in 1969 and expressed His desire to reside in this place rendering it holiest of places. This is the place which Swami Shivananda, Shree's father chose for His Samadhi. Shri Swami Maharaj was indicating the future events with His yogic powers.

Shri Swami Samartha was omniscient and read even secret thoughts of anybody. He used to convince this with proofs. Shri Swami Maharaj's talks and preaching were extremely enigmatic and cryptic. At times He would repeat some words or smaller sentences four or five times. It would become difficult for anybody to comprehend the meaning of His utterances at that time, but soon the message would become clear through some incident. In this manner He would foretell about incidents to come. Some times Shri Swami Samartha answered queries of some devotees with actions. Discernable and experienced disciples could understand the message thus conveyed by Shri Swami Maharaj only after some reflection. Shri Swami Maharaj offered advice to His devotees according to their spiritual aptitude. This is the reason why one may notice apparently contradictory teachings. While one disciple is asked to stop idol worship, other one is gifted an image/idol of his choice to be worshiped.

Shri Swami Maharaj treated the rich and poor with the same affection. Once, Shrimant Maloji Raje, the ruler of Akkalkot, came to visit Shri Swami Maharaj seated in a howdah on an elephant. When the ruler was bowing at the feet, Shri Swami Samartha slapped him on the face and said, “ Don’t show your greatness to me. I have seen many such kings that merely belong in the game of chess.” Thereafter Shrimant Malojiraje always made it a point to come for Swami Maharaj's darshan on feet and scrupulously avoided any signs of his being the ruler.

Shri Swami Maharaj treated all disciples with same love and care. He never harbored the concept of untouchability, which was common in the Hindu social structure. He made no distinction between the Hindus or Muslims. Even today people belonging to all religious faiths respect Him. He accepted food at any devotee's house irrespective of his caste or social status. Whenever a devotee from lower class came to seek His darshan, He would ask the devotee to come closer and offer him prasad. i.e. symbol of blessings in the form of sweets, eatables or clothes, with His own hands.

He would mostly deny permission to go on pilgrimage to His devotees. One of His disciples had a desire of visiting Benares on pilgrimage and sought Swami Maharaj's permission. Shri Swami Maharaj repeated a verse, which meant: ‘The dust at the feet of the saints alone is my holy place!’ This way He suggested that it was not necessary to travel to far places on pilgrimage on the contrary being in the service of holy men fulfilled the purpose.
Once a disciple asked Him in worried tone, “ Maharaj what is my fate, what will happen to me?” Shri Swami Maharaj shot back, “ What? Do you not have bulls?” Probably He wanted to suggest that any person who was prepared to sweat and toil would not lack any thing in life.

About eight days prior to Mahasamadhi Shri Swami Samartha visited a small village named Naganhalli where looking in the direction of West, He repeated the following praise of Lord Shiva,
Shivahar Shankar Namami Shankar Shivashankar Shambho I
He Girijapate Bhavani Shankar Shivashankar Shambho II
(“Oh Shambho, I bow unto thee who art auspicious and grantest prosperity and confenest happiness.”)
One can now understand the significance of this incidence. Shivapuri, the abode of Lord Shiva Himself, is located a few kilometers west of Naganhalli. Shivapuri the holy Yajnya Nagar was founded by Paramsadguru Shree Gajanan Maharaj to reiterate the ancient Vedic message of Yajnya and Agnihotra. It was here that Lord Shiva appeared to Shree during the great Somayaga performed in 1969 and expressed His desire to reside in this place rendering it holiest of places. This is the place which Swami Shivananda, Shree's father chose for His Samadhi. Shri Swami Maharaj was indicating the future events with His yogic powers.

Shree Swami Samarth: Swami’s Devine Game
The experiences of devotees at “Gaondevi pada, Panvel” Muth (Temple-Shrine) are inexplicable. Devotees are getting an experience of Swami Samarth here. Few of such experiences are as follows:
Many childless couples have been blessed with children. People have got rid of mutual differences. Jobless people have got jobs. Those wishful of marriage are getting good marriage proposals. Business men’s businesses are running smoothly. Those involved in legal matters are expecting fair judgment. People are slowly getting rid of miseries of their lives are experiencing happiness. Swamiji’s appreance
Swami was as glorious as sun like Shree Ram. He had 6 ft height, broad chest. His eyebrows were gray. He was whitefish complexioned. Such luster of divine brilliance was being emitted from his eyes, that none could look at him directly. He also looked like a fierce lion. Brave personality like Vishwasrao mane had said that, ‘If time comes, we can face tiger but I don’t have courage to stand in front on Samarth.”
Shree Swami Samarth had long ears. Ear lobules were thin and hence while talking used to move. Swamiji laughs uncontrollably. Shree Swamiji was temperate in speech. Occasionally he liked to adopt silence. At times he would repeat some words or smaller sentences three to four times. He would speak in Marathi and Hindi. His body was tender as rose patels such that his feet feel boneless. There was always a ‘Tilak’ on His forehead and his Body would be smeared with sandal paste. He wore ‘Tulsi Mala’ (necklace). His devotees used to wear him kaufin [dress], brocade hood and shawl. But no one guess at which moment Shree Maharaj will be angry.
While roaming he used to talk and laugh as a free child. While walking he used to mood of having hukka (A device used to smoke tobacco). In between he used to ask question to any plant or rock, “What do you want?” He used sinf shlokas, dohas. Shree Samarth read secret questions of devotees and used to give answers of the same. Shree Swami Samartha was omniscient.
If Samarth casually went for walking every body used to follow him. People used to bring umbrella, horses, cows, musical instruments, tents, chamare, palkhi etc. His devotees, followers used to come. Also sweet seller, flower seller used to accompany Maharaj. If Maharaj went to forest, all these people used to accompany him. But everybody in that group used to complete their work on time. People feel the Swamiji’s presence like heaven. Then it can be in forest or else where. Due to Maharaj people used to visit any place even though it is very lonely. And people used to sing in praise of Samarth, ‘Shree Swami Samarth Maharaj ki jai.’

Foot Prints of Great soul
Swami Samarth has told his background in very mysterious manner as “Main person, Banyan tree, Datta Nagar, main, main”. Not only his background but also his whole life seems to be mysterious. It is difficult to understand and find his background, his native place, from where did he came, and his parent’s information. Many of his closed devotees tried to find it out.
Swami Samarth was staying at Chintopant Tol’s house. At that time, while chitchatting Chintopant causally asked Maharaj, “Were you family person? Maharaj spontaneously answered, “My cast is chambhar. My mother is of mahar community and my father also.” And then he started laughing. After that gentle man named Karve asked same question. Then Maharaj said, ““I am a Yajurvedi Brahmin. My name is Nrushimhabhan. I belong to the Kashyap Gotra, and my Zodiac sign is Meen (Pisces). If you ask me again, you will get shoe beating.
Astrologer Nana Rekhi had prepared the horoscope of Shree Swami Samarth. Shree Swami Samarth had approved this. According to the horoscope, ‘Nrushimhabhan’ was given as his nick name. In the horoscope, the sign of the Zodiac is shown as Mesha (Aries) and Meen (spices) as lagna rashi. When Swami stated his zodiac as ‘Meena’(Pisces), it is highly possible that Shree Swamiji wanted to state the Meena Rashi (Pisces sign) itself as the Lagna Rashi. In the horoscope Yajurvedi Brahmin and Kashyap Gotra is also mentioned. After seeing horoscope Shree Samarth said,” Play music.” Shree Swamiji placed his hand on the right hand of Rekhi and displayed the Vishnupad in blue color on his palm. This mark remained on his palm until the end. Shree Swamiji then said, “I have given you my Atmalinga.”
Shree Swami is incarnation of Lard Datta. Lord Datta’s incarnations are Shree Datta, Shree Vallabh Swami, Shree NruSimhaSaraswati and then Shree Swami Samarth. All his devotees worship him considering incarnation of Lord Datta. Shree NruSimhasaraswati’s place is Gandgapaur. Many Datta devotees visit that place. But since when Swami Maharaj arrived in Akkalkot many devotees have started visiting Akkalkot. A Brahmin from western Maharashtra had made a promise to Shreeguru, Narasinha Saraswati, that if is blessed by baby son then he would perform his thread ceremony at Ganagapur. By the kind grace of Sriguru, the Brahmin got a son. To fulfill his promise he started to go to Ganagapur. On the way to Ganagapur, when he reached Akkalkot he realized that he had spent all his money and there was nothing left to go ahead. Therefore, at Akkalkot he approached Shree Swami Samarth and prayed to him “Now going to Ganagapur to fulfill my promise is beyond my reach. You are the incarnation of Lord Dattatrey. Kindly allow me to fulfill my promise here itself”. Shree Swami accepted his request and the Brahmin performed his Son’s thread ceremony in Akkalkot itself.
Maharaj was surrounded by three types of people. Some people were selfless devotees. Some people were offering services to him without selfishness. And some were used to come to pass their time. Many people used to visit him. Shree Swami Maharaj treated his devotees according to their spiritual aptitude and their motto. Swami treated everybody according to the nature of devotee. For intellectual people he treated intelligently and to stupid’ stupidly.
No one has seen Samarth as sleeping. But he used to cover himself in blanket. From 2:00 Am he used to sing ‘abhangas’, ‘shlokas’(Verses). Hence people came to know that Maharaj has waked up. That time people used to ask him their queries. Maharaj used answer all their questions till dawn. In the morning when people started coming he used to start his normal routine. Then there is no guarantee that everybody will get correct answer. Many times answer would be irrelevant.
Regarding his final journey Sri Swamiji would give indications in advance. Once in Sagar village, in the morning he said to his devotee Balappa, “I want to go higher and far away. Are you ready to provide service to me?” He went and sat in the Jangam Muth of Akkalkot. That time Thakudas buwa was singing kirtan[God’s song]. Bawdekar Puranik was also present there. Large idol of Lord Shiva of Jangam belonging to the Lingayat community is in the muth. He told the Muth’s attendant to bring dry cowdung cakes and create a sacred fire on the ‘Shivalinga’. Seeing this act of Sri Swamiji Lingayat devotees became furious and started shouting in anger but kept silent seeing the divine form of Sri Swamiji. The sacred fire was very intense. The intense heat scorched the stone walls. However, on the next day as per the instructions of Shree Swamiji when the Shivalinga was cleansed it had become exceedingly bright and luminous than it was before. This way Maharaj started giving indications. But people did not understand the meaning behind it. But people came to know that Swamiji is giving bad indications and something bad is going to happen.

Final Journey and MahaSamadhi
On chiatra Shudha Pounima of 1800 A.D. when one of his follower was about to set his bed Maharaj said, “I do not want to sleep on bed.” At night he had slight fever and in the morning he suffered from dysentery. From that time he gave up food. People didn’t get that Swamiji was suffering from illness. Topmost allopathic and Aayurvedic doctors were called from Akkalkot and Solapur. They started looking after Maharaj’s health. His devotees like Mr. DevMamledar, judge Narayan Barve distributed goods through Maharaj.
Chaitra Krishna Trayodashi day of Hindu year 1800 (Year 1878 as per English calendar), none of the devotees could sense the bad incident coming on there way. At 1:00 Pm Swami ordered his devotees to bring his pets (cows, horses, bullocks). Hearing this, devotees were totally depressed. But still they bought all pets in front of the Maharaj. He offered all Prasad (material substance eg. food that is first offered to a deity and then consumed) and his cloths to the pets. Pets’ eyes started shedding tears. Maharaj touched then with love and he was sat on a bed. Swamiji told his devotee to bring cushion for support. By extending cushion’s physical support Shree Swamiji sat in lotus position and got himself absorbed in supreme self. Doctor stared checking him. But he could not sense his breathing. Devotees and disciples started bewailing.
And then Swamiji opened his eyes. People felt little bit unburdened. Swamiji told everybody to keep quite. Everybody was staring Swamiji. Then Sri Swamiji repeated one verse from Bhagvad-Gita
“Ananyas Chintaye mam, Ye janah paryupasate!
Tesham nityabhiyuktanam, Yoga-kshemam vahamyaham! !”.
Meaning of the verse is:
But those who always worship me, with exclusive devotion, meditating on my transcendental form, to them, I carry what they lack and I preserve what they have
He gave blessing to everybody and then again closed his eyes. Everybody felt that moment as dream. Again devotees and disciples started bewailing. Sri Swamiji had departed making his devotees orphan. People didn’t think that this incarnation is going to end. They started crying. It appeared as though children had lost their mother and calves had lost their mother-cow. It appeared as though mother Guru had turned away his face from his devotees. Who can describe the devotee’s pain of separation from their Guru? This news spread everywhere like wind. Devotees from every village rushed to Akkalkot. Shree Swamiji’s face still reflected divine splendor and seemed as lustrous as usual. Looking at is bright face people thought that he is still alive and will definitely make some movement. But “Yoga-kshemam vahamyaham” were his last words.
His devotee Rama Sutar with help of others created aeroplace of flowers for the final journey of Shree Swamiji. His devotees dressed him with cloths and ornaments. Flowers were showered down on Shree Swamiji. The entire resources of Akkalkot State including elephants, horses, along with the insignia of royalty were kept ready for the final journey of Sri Swamiji. Entire mass of people started moving ahead continuously singing devotional songs to take the final darshan of their God, Shree Swamiji. Cholappa had kept a place ready in his house (in budhwar peth) for Sri Swamiji’s Samadhi. People bought Swamiji there and laid Swamiji’s body into the Samadhi. Samadhi has place for keeping padukas and people sang devotional song and samadhi’s door was closed.
On that day not only Akkalkt but world had became orphan. People, animals, birds even whole atmosphere became unhappy. The news spread everywhere through letter, speed post. Some devotees left food; some left everything and went to holy places. Some devotees waited to see whether Swamiji gives any indication. Shree Swami Samartha granted incessant supreme divine joy depending on the devotion of his devotees. Shree Swami Samarth Maharaj, the incarnation of Lord Dattatrey, had manifested himself in a human form and carried out miraculous works for wellbeing of common man. Even though Sri Swami Samarth is no longer in bodily manifestation, he still guides his true devotees on the spiritual path. Such devotees lead a great life and find true meaning of it.

All pervading, all encompassing Swami Samartha -
When a devotee invited Shri Swami Samartha for meals, He said “ When everybody is fed I feel satisfied. Go happily and feed all the poor.”
Shri Swami Samartha as Dhanvantari i.e. Divine healer.
a.) A devotee suffering chronically from the unbearable pains in stomach was advised by Shri Swami Samartha “ The lime tree is called ‘Shripuri’ . Press the juice of fresh lemon, mix it with ginger and rocksalt and take this mixture for three days you will be relieved of your pain.”
b). A European person had some injury on a leg, which caused him unbearable pain. Doctors advised amputation, saying that there was no other remedy. Shri Swami Samartha gave him certain herbs and advised him
“ Wash rice grains with water. Mash these herbs and add it to the water in which rice is washed. Take this mixture internally and also apply it externally to the injury. Your leg will be healed.”
c.) To a devotee suffering from leprosy Shri Swami Samartha suggested the remedy
“ Apply your feces to your body”
d ). A devotee told Shri Swami Samartha that his son was blind. Shri Swami Samartha suggested the cure “ apply the urine of a buffalo.”
e.) A person suffering from piles was suggested a treatment by Shri Swami Samartha. He told his friend,” Give him the urine of cow and he will be healed”
9. Pun on the word ‘Panchapatra’ (A utensil consisting of five bowls)-
One of the ladies, who had gathered around Shri Swami Samartha for His darshan, referring to some article, said casually to other lady “It is kept in Panchapatra, take it”. Swami Maharaj heard this and made a pun “ Do you yourself realize the object which is in the Panchpatra? Have you laid your hands on it? And if you have then explain its true nature to me. I will take it then, if you ask me to”
(There is a pun in this statement – This body consisting of five sense organs is made up of five primordial elements. The ever pure, free and enlightened soul of the person is trapped in this body. By Masters grace and practice of spiritual disciplines one understands its true nature and then ‘that object’ and supreme soul merge into each other. This is what Shri Swami Maharaj might have meant.)

Do not eat food offered and prepared by any body and everybody. Not only this but be watchful to see from whom you are accepting even the betel leaf. You will also become evil if you eat food offered by evil person. If you eat even a betel leaf offered by a man or woman always engrossed in sensual thoughts, then you will also become like that person.
Do not offer spiritual knowledge or advice to every person you meet. Assess the worth of the person and then only offer spiritual advice depending on his merits.
Do not see the face of a lazy person.
Earn your livelihood through sincere efforts
Be always engaged in practicing your Dharma. Then you will triumph in every field
Serve your Master with out feeling any kind of shame whatsoever.
Whenever you come across an able guide on the spiritual path try to gain as much knowledge and advice from him as possible. No master will share the knowledge on his own, as no farm will yield crops on its own.
It is with Gods will that we receive joys and sorrows in worldly life. One should accept the Divine Will with pleasure, so that he goes beyond the joys and sorrows of life.
One should understand the secret behind idol worship while performing it. Idol worship is not the only means of worship. Our duty is to experience self-realization. Therefore one should gradually try to progress towards self-elevation.
Try to purify your mind too as you try to maintain external sanctity of the body
Do actions without expecting any rewards
Bookish knowledge alone will not lead you to self-realization. Try to put the acquired knowledge in to practice

Akkalkot Niwasi Shree Swami Samarth
During this travel, he became popular by various names at various places. Thus at one place he was known as Chanchal Bharati and at another place he would be called Digambar Swami. As he travelled and stayed at various places, he became the Guru (preceptor) of many great souls like Shree Ramkrishna Paramahansa, Shree Saibaba of Shirdi, Shree Shankar Maharaj, Shree Gajajan Maharaj of Shegaon etc. Finally he settled down at Akkalkot (Maharashtra State) and stayed there for 24 years from 1854 A.D. to 1878 A.D. and thus came to be known as the Akkalkot Niwasi Shree Swami Samarth Maharaj (the great sage of Akkalkot).
Here he enlightened many disciples, such as Shree Dev Mamledar, Shree Balappa Maharaj, Shree Cholappa Maharaj, Shree Nrusimha Saraswati Maharaj of Alandi, Shree Ramanand Beedkar Maharaj of Pune etc.

Swami Samarth had the capacity to read the minds of all the people coming to him and also was able to know about their past and future. Baba Saheb Jadhav, one of his great devotees one day came to meet the Master. Seeing him suddenly Swami Samarth said "Oh Potter! There is a summon coming in your name”. The potter being in the close circle of Swami Samarth understood the meaning of this sentence and begged of the Swami to save him from the approaching death so that he could continue to serve him (the Master). Moved by his devotion Swami Samarth looked-up towards the sky and muttered something as if he was addressing to someone who was invisible. Suddenly, he pointed his hand towards a bull passing nearby and said in a loud voice "go to the bull". In the presence of a large number of devotees, the bull instantly fell dead. Jadhav, with a fresh lease of life, devoted himself totally to the service of Swami Samarth thereafter. Similarly, A European engineer from Solapur visited the Swami with the earnest hope of having a son. As he approached Swami Samarth, the latter just looked at him and told that he would have a son within a year. That is what exactly happened.

The procession to Wadi
One day Swami expressed his desire to go thus, all the way to Wadi. Therefore the entire procession proceeded to Wadi with Swami leading up front. That day Ram happened to be holding the reins of the horse. As they neared Wadi, Swami asked him to carry him on his shoulder. Thus Swami fulfilled Ram’s heartfelt wish.
When Swami and his devotees reached Wadi, they first proceeded for a ritual dip in the sangam (confluence where the river Krishna meets river Panchganga). They then went to offer their worship to Shri Narasimha Saraswati’s padukas.
After their darshan, they immediately proceeded to Shirole village. At the outskirts of the village, Swami stopped the procession. A while later, a woman carrying a water pitcher passed by. Swami called out to her, "Yamabai, please come here. Take this coconut. You have my blessings. You will soon have a son. You may go now".

Annabua Mirajkar’s samadhi
After this visit, Swami and the devotees proceeded to pay their respects at the samadhi of the famous saint Annabua Mirajkar. This tomb is situated in the center of the city of Miraj. As Swami entered the place, a voice from within the tomb spoke, "Krishna! I am so happy to see you here. Seeing you, I felt as if Shri Swami Samartha has come to meet me". Swami replied, "Anna, You really flatter me! But then, both of us are one and the same". Many devotees at the samadhi temple heard this conversation between the two sages. The news that Anna had spoken from his grave with Swami spread through the entire city like wild fire. People rushed to procure Swami’s blessings – for health, wealth, employment, marriage, and children. There was such a heavy rush that Swami could not get a moment free.
Around noon, amidst the crowd, Swami was heard murmuring to himself, "I must go to see Bhaskar". And lo behold! He disappeared then and there from the sight, in front of the pushing crowd. There was a panic amidst his devotees. They could not fathom where Swami could have gone and for what reason. They were scared to face Tarabai’s wrath, in case she came to know that they had lost Swami. She would perhaps commit suicide. Helplessly, they started to softly chant the mantra, "Digambara Digambara Shripad Vallabh Digambara", praying fervently for Swami’s return.

"Today is the first Monday of Kartik. Did you meet your bachelor Guru?"

A widow named Yesubai lived with her father in a village called Alate. She was of a religious bent of mind. She spent her time chanting Lord Vithoba’s name. She would often attend the various religious discourses that were held in their village temple. One day in such a discourse, she heard the orator say, "Life is useless if you cannot find the right Guru. Only a Guru can take you onto the spiritual path". This statement made a profound impact on Yesubai’s mind. She started praying to God to send her the right Guru. In her quest, she met many spiritual people, scholars and sanyasi, but none impressed her. She not only wanted the right Guru, but she built up his image of being a bachelor and one who was free of worldly affairs. Although she intensified her search, it was all in vain. Nevertheless, she kept on with her practice of chanting Lord Vithoba’s name.
One day, a pious Brahmin visited her house. He said, "I am from Pandharpur. I am on my way to visit Audambara (holy place near Wadi where Lord Narasimha Saraswati stayed for sometime, to date his padukas are worshipped there). Could you provide me with food today?" Attracted by the radiance exuding this man, Yesubai gently requested him to take a seat while she prepared his meal. While cooking, Yesubai started to wonder, "This man looks gloriously brilliant. Perhaps he is a saint. Or he may be Lord Vithoba in disguise. But if that is the case, why should he go to Audambara? Anyway, should I request him to become my Guru?"
While serving food, Yesubai started talking with the guest. In the conversation, the guest revealed that his wife and children lived in Pandharpur. Yesubai was once again disappointed. After finishing his meal, the guest looked at Yesubai’s crest-fallen face and inquired, "You look worried. If you tell me, I may be able to solve your problem." Yesubai then unburdened herself. She told him about her search for a bachelor Guru. The guest smilingly blessed her saying, "Your wish will be fulfilled soon. On the first Monday of the next month Kartika, you will receive an invitation where you will meet your Guru". Saying thus, he bid her goodbye. It set Yesubai thinking that her guest must have been an extra ordinary man to predict such details with absolute certainty.
After a couple of weeks, Yesubai’s father received a court notice to appear for a case in Kolhapur. Since the court work would take considerably long time, her father did not like leaving her alone at home so long. He therefore decided to take her along with him to Kolhapur. Thus, father and daughter came to Kolhapur and stayed with some relatives.
One day the women of the household and their neighborhood decided to visit Swami. They revealed their plans to Yesubai who eagerly accompanied them to the mathi. All the women in turn bowed to Swami for his blessings. When Yesubai touched his feet with reverence, he laughingly asked her, "Today is the first Monday of Kartik. Did you meet your bachelor Guru?" Yesubai was rendered speechless. Now she realized who her saintly guest was and how he had accurately predicted this meeting. It was Swami himself who had visited her and arranged for her meeting . He had arranged for her father’s court case to act as an invitation to her to visit Kolhapur. She surrendered to Swami and became an ardent devotee.

What will you learn from Shri Swami Samartha -

1. It is necessary for the aspirants seeking self–realization to surrender unto a master who has gained ultimate knowledge and has firmly established Himself in communion with the Lord. Once having met such a master the seeker should continuously meditate upon his Master, serve him with devotion and pay utmost attention to His spiritual advice, as if every word coming from His lips were a Mantra. This way after serving your master you will attain self- realization in this world and be liberated in the end.
2. Do not eat food offered and prepared by any body and everybody. Not only this but be watchful to see from whom you are accepting even the betel leaf. You will also become evil if you eat food offered by evil person. If you eat even a betel leaf offered by a man or woman always engrossed in sensual thoughts, then you will also become like that person.
3. Have firm belief that it is god alone who is immanent in every seen and unseen thing in this universe. This will help you maintain purity of the mind.
4. Do not offer spiritual knowledge or advice to every person you meet. Assess the worth of the person and then only offer spiritual advice depending on his merits.
5. Do not see the face of a lazy person.
6. Earn your livelihood through sincere efforts.
7. Do not resort to opium or other drugs.
8. Be always engaged in practicing your Dharma. Then you will triumph in every field.
9. Serve your Master with out feeling any kind of shame whatsoever.
10. Whenever you come across an able guide on the spiritual path try to gain as much knowledge and advice from him as possible. No master will share the knowledge on his own, as no farm will yield crops on its own.
11. While following spiritual practice if you gain spiritual powers then do not fall prey to the lure of using them to show miracles.
12. It is improper to use spiritual knowledge only as means to earn your livelihood.
13. Conduct of the people treading the spiritual path should be pure and righteous.
14. Since the final goal of all religious faiths and sects preaching Divine knowledge is one and the same all sects and faiths are birds of the same feather.
15. Mythological scriptures composed by seers should be read and repeated.
16. It is with Gods will that we receive joys and sorrows in worldly life. One should accept the Divine Will with pleasure, so that he goes beyond the joys and sorrows of life.
17. One should understand the secret behind idol worship while performing it. Idol worship is not the only means of worship. Our duty is to experience self-realization. Therefore one should gradually try to progress towards self-elevation.
18. Try to purify your mind too as you try to maintain external sanctity of the body.
19. Do actions without expecting any rewards.
20. Bookish knowledge alone will not lead you to self-realization. Try to put the acquired knowledge in to practice.

The divine game (leela) of Swami Samarth did not end with his Maha Samadhi (shedding his mortal coil). His devotees continue to experience the miracles of his visible and invisible help even till today. It is exactly like the experience received by the devotees of Sai Baba of Shirdi after his Mahasamadhi in 1918. Many people have authenticated his appearance in physical form before them. These people are not the faith-blind rural folk. Many of them are well educated people like doctors, educationists etc. For example, Dr. S.V.Marathe, a private medical practitioner of Pune once underwent treatment in a chest Hospital at a place called Aundh in 1964. Many of his friends were anxious to come and visit him. At this juncture, Swami Samarth appeared before many of his friends in a dream and gave the same message to all of them. He asked them not to worry about Dr.Marathe, as he was under His (Swami Samarth's) protection and also not to come to Aundh.
Hundreds of devotees continue to have miraculous experience about the Perfect Master even today.
But his miracles and those of Shri Sainath are so alike that one would be drawn to the conclusion that they are not two masters but are one, and the ONLY ONE TRUTH.

Mahasamaadhi
Shree Swami Samarth one day suddenly announced that the time had come for him to go out of his physical existence. By Hindu calendar it was Chaitra Vadya Trayodashi of Hindu year 1800, i.e. April 30, 1878 AD, Tuesday at 4 PM. At this time he seated himself in Padmasana (Lotus Posture) and uttered his last words - "no one should weep I shall always be present at all places and I shall respond to every call of the devotees." The great sage adopted MahaSamadhi [the last conscious communion with God] under his favourite Banyan tree.
The divine game (leela) of Shree Swami Samarth did not end with his Maha Samadhi (shedding his mortal coil). His devotees continue to experience the miracles of his visible and invisible help even till today.

"Today is the first Monday of Kartik. Did you meet your bachelor Guru?"
Yesubai
A widow named Yesubai lived with her father in a village called Alate. She was of a religious bent of mind. She spent her time chanting Lord Vithoba’s name. She would often attend the various religious discourses that were held in their village temple. One day in such a discourse, she heard the orator say, "Life is useless if you cannot find the right Guru. Only a Guru can take you onto the spiritual path". This statement made a profound impact on Yesubai’s mind. She started praying to God to send her the right Guru. In her quest, she met many spiritual people, scholars and sanyasi, but none impressed her. She not only wanted the right Guru, but she built up his image of being a bachelor and one who was free of worldly affairs. Although she intensified her search, it was all in vain. Nevertheless, she kept on with her practice of chanting Lord Vithoba’s name.
One day, a pious Brahmin visited her house. He said, "I am from Pandharpur. I am on my way to visit Audambara (holy place near Wadi where Lord Narasimha Saraswati stayed for sometime, to date his padukas are worshipped there). Could you provide me with food today?" Attracted by the radiance exuding this man, Yesubai gently requested him to take a seat while she prepared his meal. While cooking, Yesubai started to wonder, "This man looks gloriously brilliant. Perhaps he is a saint. Or he may be Lord Vithoba in disguise. But if that is the case, why should he go to Audambara? Anyway, should I request him to become my Guru?"
While serving food, Yesubai started talking with the guest. In the conversation, the guest revealed that his wife and children lived in Pandharpur. Yesubai was once again disappointed. After finishing his meal, the guest looked at Yesubai’s crest-fallen face and inquired, "You look worried. If you tell me, I may be able to solve your problem." Yesubai then unburdened herself. She told him about her search for a bachelor Guru. The guest smilingly blessed her saying, "Your wish will be fulfilled soon. On the first Monday of the next month Kartika, you will receive an invitation where you will meet your Guru". Saying thus, he bid her goodbye. It set Yesubai thinking that her guest must have been an extra ordinary man to predict such details with absolute certainty.
After a couple of weeks, Yesubai’s father received a court notice to appear for a case in Kolhapur. Since the court work would take considerably long time, her father did not like leaving her alone at home so long. He therefore decided to take her along with him to Kolhapur. Thus, father and daughter came to Kolhapur and stayed with some relatives.
One day the women of the household and their neighborhood decided to visit Swami. They revealed their plans to Yesubai who eagerly accompanied them to the mathi. All the women in turn bowed to Swami for his blessings. When Yesubai touched his feet with reverence, he laughingly asked her, "Today is the first Monday of Kartik. Did you meet your bachelor Guru?" Yesubai was rendered speechless. Now she realized who her saintly guest was and how he had accurately predicted this meeting. It was Swami himself who had visited her and arranged for her meeting . He had arranged for her father’s court case to act as an invitation to her to visit Kolhapur. She surrendered to Swami and became an ardent devotee.

A devotee of Akkalkot Maharaj by name Bhai Krishnaji Alibagkar worshipped the photo of Akkalkot Maharaj. He once thought of going to Akkalkot (Sholapur District), taking the darshana of the Padukas (foot-prints) of the Maharaj and offering his sincere worship there; but before he could go there, he got a vision in his dream. Akkalkot Maharaj appeared in the vision and said to him - Now Shirdi is my resting place, go there and offer your Worship. So Bhai changed his plan and came to Shirdi, worshipped Baba, stayed there for six months and was happy. As a reminiscence of this vision etc., he prepared the Padukas and installed them on an auspicious day of Shravan, Shaka 1834 (1912 A.D.) under the Neem tree with due ceremonies and formalities, conducted by Dada Kelkar and Upasani. One Dixit Brahmin was appointed for worship, and the management was entrusted to devotee Sagun.
