  • Where is Shanishingnapur ?

Shignapur is situated at a distance of 6 kms from Ghodegaon on Aurangabad-Ahmednagar highway. The distance from Aurangabad is 84 kms and from Ahmednagar it is 35 kms. From Ghodegaon, there is a motorable tar road up to the idol of Shri Shaneshwar and is open in all the seasons. The population of this village is about 3000. There are no regular buses but on pilgrimage days there are special transport buses plying to Shignapur.

  • Information of the village

Primarily, almost all people here in this village are descendants of Maharaja Chatrapati Shivaji and they are normally known by the names of Darandale, Bankar, Shete and Borrude. People by other names and castes are very few. The village itself is small but famous for its name. Houses without doors and windows in the village and the fields are many. The people of these four families have become relatives by marriages among the children in their families.

This village adores and celebrates many ancient customs, rituals and festivals with gusto and happiness. Since there are good roads, a lot of people come and go from here by buses, cars and autorichshaws. The people of this village are not victims of bad habits.
There are no signs of liquor, gambling and non-vegetarianism. By the grace of God Shani, the people here are God fearing, religious, honest and trustworthy. Here, not once has a theft occurred. The homes here have no doors and windows. Therefore, the windows of their minds are always open. They are very hospitable to guests.

In this village of saints, God Shani is the lord and God of everybody and every thing.
It is believed here that one reaps one sows and one gets the fruit of one’s actions immediately. Some of the things that are almost not at all used here are windows, door stoppers, chains, suitcases, latches, locks and the like. Because, it is believed here that it is the wish of God Shani himself that locks should not be used. Because the people believe that the protection of their homes and the village is rested with God Shani. They believe that God Shani himself says, “ You live with total peace of mind all day inside your house and outside. Nothing bad will happen to you. I’ll protect you and your homes.”

It is on the advice of God Shani that doors, windows and locks are not used here. As a result, this village is viewed differently by different people, worldwide. However, elsewhere there is so much of theft in the world. There are locks on locks used. Yet thieves continues with theft. And nobody is happy. But in Shanishingnapur, since many years homes have no doors and locks and are kept open all day and night. Yet not a single thief has committed a theft. Generations in this village have witnessed this for years.

I went to meet a lot of people in their homes, their lanes, fields and hutments and found that the people, men and women, young and old, are living in harmony and happiness. They come together in Indian festivals and celebrations and take part with a lot of harmony and feeling. Whatever happens here, happens with the blessings and the people’s faith in God Shani. If at all, any ill-fortune, hurt, illness, and natural loss occurred here, these also are regarded as having occurred by the will of God Shani. They
view as God sent penalty and punishment. If any sinner commits any sin here, God Shani is known to punish him. If any thing is taken away by any person or a devotee by mistake, for example any clothes, bedding, bag etc., by the miracle of God Shani, they have been known to come back and return them or send them by post or courier. And after that they experience, inner peace and happiness. So now, the thought will cross your minds as to how God Shani himself came into this village?

  • Some examples

Just as parents help their children who are stuck in trouble, similarly God also helps his devotees who are in trouble, either seen or unseen by them. Man’s life is rife with many kinds of troubles and struggles. And man finds a way out of it. In the hearts of men, there is a great deal of devotion and faith in God. Because of this faith in him, God pulls men out of trouble, gives him courage and peace. There are countless such examples with us that by the grace of Shri Shaneshchar, Shanishingnapur has becomes famous all over India.

  • Criticism of god and reference

God Shaneshwar is very hot, strong and staunch like Sri Shankar. Shaneshwar is supreme to all Gods. He effect is so extreme that even Shankar had to flee to Kailash because of Shani’s fear.

The king of Ujjain was known for his religiousness, generosity and loyalty. Once by oversight, he blamed Shani Maharaja and due to this he had to suffer all the earthly miseries for seven and half years. Like Vikramaditya, many people who criticized Shanidev had the experience of misfortunes.

    • Shri Jethabai a rich and big merchant of Jat State came to Shignapur on the insistence of devotees. He saw the idol and uttered ‘how is this idol and how is this God’ ‘How do these people worship and pay respect to such a God’. He blamed God and returned to his car without worshipping. The moment he sat in the car, his nose tip became black. The other persons with saw this and brought it to his notice. He took it lightly thinking that some black thing must have stuck and brushed it with his dhoti. The black spot remained as it was as they traveled and by the time he reached his house, half of his face became black. He tried to wash but in vain. He took treatment from the doctors. This too did not work. He was very much worried and in this state of mind he remembered that some one told him of the black spot while boarding the car at Shignapur and recalled his criticism of Shanidev. Thinking this could be a punishment for the untoward expressions, he returned to Shignapur and after worshipping Shanidev asked for forgiveness. The spot started fading out and by the time he reached house, the black spot vanished totally.

    • Shri Auti, Mamledar of Newasa came to Shignapur on the orders of Government to publicise ’War Loan Fund’. People were afraid of him. As they were to pay war fund, many of them left for their fields. Only a few were present who were worshipping Shanidev. Mamledar said to them that they couldn’t avoid the war hazards by worshipping this black God. He told I am devotee of white God. What will the stone do? He said that they all should pay war fund and war tax and get rid of the war disasters by pleasing the white Gods. He warned the villagers to contribute the amount to the Patel who in turn would remit it at Taluka Headquarters. He came home and found that a black boil appeared on his neck. He became restless due to the pains. Doctors tried their best to cure him but in vain. The treatment went on for a year. Some one told him that this might be a curse of Shanidev. At last, he came to Shignapur and performed puja with all the rituals and begged pardon. The eruption then disappeared.

    • Sri Shankarrao Annasaheb Rajhans of Sonai was the Kulkarni. He came to Shignapur for a Government work when worship of Shanidev was going on. He had to wait till the puja was over. Angered over the delay, he said ‘what do these ignorant people worship?’ A stone comes rolling and people regard it as Shanidev. With these words he criticised God. He then developed unbearable temperature. On completion of the work he was to go to Ghodegaon. His physical condition became so weak that he had to go back to Sonai where he lost his speech. He tried different treatments but in vain. The police sub-inspector of Sonai Sri Prahlad Manohar Atitkar advised him to beg pardon of Shanidev. He vowed to take darshan on five Saturdays and begged pardon. He then regained his speech.

  • Sheetey-kaul Lagana (The dropping of God’s flower)

The populace of Ahmednagar in Maharashtra, are many times, affected by drought. Because of scanty rainfall, repeatedly drought strikes. The main occupation of people here is agriculture. Because of drought, drinking water for people and cattle comes into acute shortage. They wander from place to place. Then, the villagers of Shanishingnapur pray to their dear God Shani. They do ‘kaul’. Then by the grace of God Shani, the rains come. This is believed far and wide. People wait for the rains till the coming of the ‘Punarvsu’ star. If it still does not rain, people come together and ask for the decision of God Shani. They ask of him whether it will rain or no. This is called ‘Sheetey-kaul Lagana’. People say that the meteorological department’s forecast may go wrong, but the ‘kaul’ (decision’) of God Shani will always be right.

For this, the pooja of Shanichar is performed. The entire premises is kept clean. The ‘abhishek’ of God Shani is performed with’ Ganga Jal’ and ‘panchamrut’. The ‘maternal uncle and nephew ’, who are the residents of Shingnapur, will be fasting. The person awaiting the ‘decision’ of God Shani will also be fasting. People come from far and wide to see this and wait in the courtyard. In this assemblage, nobody wears a black cap, belt or carries a black umbrella. If they have brought it along, it is kept away. Afterwards, ‘gomutra’(cow’s urine) is sprinkled on everybody.

The ceremony of seeking ‘kaul’ starts in the afternoon at 3 O’clock. The ‘maternal uncle and nephew duo’ climb the foundation of the deity. Only 3 people will be on the foundation. The third person will be the one who brings the ‘Ganga Jal’ is not touched by anybody. The maternal uncle and nephew, in wet clothes are made to stand facing each other in an East westerly direction. At this time, there will be chanting of God Shani’s name. Rods of three feet length will have been kept immersed in water all night. This water will be used for God Shani only. The maternal uncle and nephew hold the rods to their waists from either sides with both hands. First, they pray to God. Then, for some time smoke of ‘dhoopa ’is given there. The person who is going to ask the question asks the maternal uncle and nephew their stars’ names. Upon taking the names of the stars accordingly, if it is going to rain, the rods come close together on their own. If it is going to rain heavily, the rods will stick together closely. Then, the devotees, chant aloud the names of God Shani loudly.

In this ceremony, only three stars’ names are taken. They are Punarvasu, Uttara and Hasta. Depending on whichever star’s decision is obtained, the rods come together.
It is in period that the rains come. If it is not going to rain, then the rods move away and outwards from each other and bend downwards. There is historical evidence that in the years 1952, 1962, 1972,1978 and 1984 this ‘kaul’ was asked of God Shani and it came true. In 1952, despite the rods being brought together many times, the rods would go way from each other. And it did not rain anywhere, while it rained well in other years.

It is a reality that on the day of 8th September 1984, ‘kaul’ was asked of God Shani. At that time, in the stars of Punarvasu, Uttara and Hasta, there was a lot of rain. On the same day, throughout the Nevasa taluka, it rained. It is strange that in other places of Maharashtra also, it rained well. Today also, we get to see and hear such miracles. Isn’t this one of the strange and uncommon things of the world?

  • The wondrous temple of the world

Man does not surrender completely anywhere without reason. Without miracles, without experiences, without jolts a man will not fold his hands and place his forehead in complete surrender anywhere. In this modern age, science is racing ahead. Science has progressed beyond imagination. But on seeing the miracles of God Shani at Shingnapur, the age of science has also been spellbound. No matter how much of an atheist a person may be, after seeing the wonders of Shanishingnapur, his mind will undergo a change. And every devotee will surrender before Shaneshchar.

All over India, God Shani is there in various places and especially so in Maharashtra.
But in Shanishingnapur, he occupies a special place. Because of its name as the Shani ‘Deavasthan’, it has become popular all over the world. Upon entering the border of Shingnapur, one experiences a wonderful feeling. The feelings of the devotee become profound. And peace descends upon the mind. Here, no priest or ‘pandit’ annoys the vsitor. All poojas and abhisheks are performed voluntarily. And unlike other places of worship, the priests do not solicit the devotees. They do not fleece the devotees in any way. There are no temples which falsely allure. There is an atmosphere which brings peace and happiness to the mind. A lot of prayer material and items are visible to the eye, but one can take a few things or, it is more than enough to join both hands and bow the forehead in prayer. There are no shopkeepers here who can rob or fleece the devotees. One can take the items needed for the prayer first and then pay later. Also, it is necessary to take the bill for the pooja aforehand. No priest here will ask for the alms (dakshina) for the pooja of God Shani. Nor will there be a beggar.

There will be no jostling and pushing during and after the pooja. One can come at ease
And pray at peace. After seeing such a wonderful atmosphere, all the devotees become very happy. The specialty of this place is that the local people come to the aid of the devotees and ask nothing in return. Innumerable people come here seeking vows and wishes. The trustees come forward selflessly, on their own, and help the devotees without taking any payment in return.

    The famous piligrimage centre Nevasa

The famous piligrimage centre Nevasa is an ancient place where the sacred river Pravara is flowing. On both the sides of river banks there are number of historical places, cultural centres, dharmic centres, shykshanic centres of ancient times. As such He is known as place punya bhumi.

In this holy land the marati language sacred book “Jnaneswari” was written by Sant Jnaneswar in 12th century. This holy book could be seen each and every family in the entire Maharastra State and every citizen will chant and read the book every day throughout the year.

    Also on this land there was a temple of Karaveereswar; Sant Jnaneswar wrote the holy book Jnaneswari in this temple. We could see today a pillar where Sant Jnaneswar used to sit attached to it. Acutally the Karaveereswar temple was there about 650 years ago, though the entire temple was destroyed due to weather vagaries, this pillar stood as a test of the times for a long period; not only that the pillar is not shifted but it is there where it was when the temple was existing. The present temple is reconstructed as per the direction and guidance of Bansi Tambe Baba. Even today we could see theinscription on the pillar of Karaveereswar Temple like this;
“Om namah (Kara) Veereswar pitha mahen yath poorv
(Datt) Akandavarthi thylayar prathimas sadha hi tat
(roopakaa) nam shatak sankyaa deyyaa achandr soo
yenk (yaschi) karoothi drustri h tasya (saha)
    poorve vrajyatythaa mangalam mahaashri!”

In the newly constructed building, the dining hall has capacity to accommodate rows of about 800 people. Even in this hall the idol of Shri Datta is installed, alongwith Shri Ram, Sita Lakshman and Shri Hanuman. The new building was constructed in the year 1957 and in that sampoorna Shri Jnaneswari holy book parayan was carried out and the script was written on the walls of the temple. And in this temple hall every year Shri Krishna Jayanthi, Gokulasttami festival are also performed. During these days of festivity thousands of people assemble in the temple comlex. Apart from performing the festivals, cultural,
spiritual discourses, speeches, etc; are also conducted very beautifully and with pleasure.
