Story of Shanidev............

In our routine lives, there is a great importance of the kindness and the power of God Shani. Shani occupies the seventh place among the nine planets which govern the world. This is viewed as unlucky in conventional astrology. As per ‘Kaagol Shastra’, the distance of Shani from the earth is 9 crore miles. Its radius is about one billion and 82 crore and 60 lakh kilometers. And its gravitational force is 95 times higher than that of the earth. Planet Shani takes 19 years to complete one revolution around the Sun. The astronauts have viewed the Shani’s colours as beautiful, strong, influencing and eye-catching. It has twenty two satellites in its ring.

Shani’s gravitational power is more than that of the Earth’s. Therefore, when we think good or bad thoughts and make plans, they reach Shani by the strength of his power. In astrological terms, the bad influence is considered as unlucky. But the result of good deeds will be good. Therefore, we must understand God Shani as a friend and not as foe. And for bad deeds, he is Sade Saathi, disaster and an enemy.

As regards the birth of Shani, there are different stories. Foremost and accepted is the one in the ancient ‘Scanda Poorana’ of Kasi Khanda which is as follows.

God Soorya was married to Daksha Kanya Sadnya. Sadnya could not tolerate the radiance of God Surya. She used to feel that by doing penance she could increase her brilliance. Or, by the power of her penance, she could diminish the glare of God Surya. But for God Surya, she was a spouse worshipping wife. From God Surya, she had three children. One was Vaivastahva Manu. The second was Yama Raj. And the third was Yamuna. Sadnya loved her children very much. But, she was very upset with the radiance of God Surya. One day, she thought that she would separate from God Surya, go to her parents’ home and undertake great penance. And if there was opposition, she would go far away to a lonely and undertake great penance.

By strength of her penance, Sadnya created a ‘Chaya’ (shadow) of herself and named her Suvarna. And, and then the shadow of herself became Suvarna. After handing over the children to Chaya, Sadnya told her that Chaya would thereafter play the role of womanhood and nurse her three children. She told her if any problem arose, she should call her and she would come rushing to her. But she cautioned her that she must remember that she was Chaya, not Sadnya, and nobody should know this difference.

Sadnya hander over her responsibilities to Chaya and went away to her parents’ place.
She went home and told her father that she could not stand the radiance of God Surya. And therefore, without telling her husband she had come away. Listening to this, her father scolded her very much and told her that without being called, if the daughter returns home, both her and her father would be cursed. He told her to go back to her home immediately. Then, Saudnya began to worry that if she went back, what would happen to the responsibilities which she had given to Chaya. Where would Chaya go?
And their secret would be exposed. So, Sadnya went to the dense jungles in Uttar Kurukshetra and took repose there.

She was fearful of her safety in the jungle because of her youthfulness and beauty. And she changed her form into that of a mare so that none could recognize her and started her penance. Elsewhere, the union of God Surya and Chaya begot three children. God Surya and Chaya were happy with each other. Surya never doubted anything. The children of Chaya were Manu, God Shani and Putri Bhadra (Tapti).

As per the second story, the creation of God Shani was the result of Maharishi Kashyap’s great ‘yagna’. When God Shani was in the womb of Chaya, Shiv Bhaktini Chaya was so engrossed in penance of God Shiva that she did not care for her food even.
She prayed so intensely during her penance that the prayers had a profound influence on the child in her womb. As a result of such a great penance of Chaya, without food and shade in the blazing sun, the complexion of God Shani became black. When God Shani was born, Surya was surprised to see his dark complexion. He began to doubt Chaya. He insulted Chaya by saying that this was not his son.

From birth itself, God Shani had inherited the great powers of his mother’s penance.
He saw that his father was insulting his mother. He saw his father with a cruel gaze. As a result his father’s body was charred black. The horses of God Surya’s chariot stopped. The chariot would not move. Worried, God Surya called out to God Shiva. God Shiva advised God Surya and explained to him about what had happened. That is, because of him the respect of mother and child had been tarnished and insulted. God Surya accepted his fault and apologized. And regained his earlier glorious looks and the power of his chariot’s horses. Since then, God Shani became a good son to his father and mother and an ardent disciple of God Shiva.

The Role......

“In the lives of people, sorrows and happiness come and go. But they are all encased in a mystery. Therefore, in this binding of nature, astrology and spiritualism have their own prime place of importance. In this era of computers and internet, the predictions and knowledge of Indian astrologer have been fulfilled and are being perpetuated the world over. Today, in America, Indian spiritualism and astrology have cast a spell over people, far and wide. In these days of a mad rush, people do not find mental peace. Today, despite our lives being complete with all the modern day amenities, there is so much of strife, tension, illness, disasters, doubt and such other evils abound. There are so many screams of agony all around us, all the time. By rising above all this, man is trying to reach out to God Shani. Why?

In India, just as with reference to God Shani, the ancient legends are famous, similarly, in European literature various stories abound. In Italy, God Shani is revered and worshipped as Saturn. Ancient Romans and the Greeks know and revere him as Cronus. Saturn or Cronus have a lot of stories and miracles popular about him. They also have situations like us, so it is called as ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’.

Just as material progress is increasing, restlessness is increasing in life. Therefore, as much as our actions (Karma) are pure and better, that much will we experience the better fruits of our actions. This is a permanent truth that our bodies are made up of five elements. So we are influenced by these elements. And these planets control our lives.
At Shanishingnapur, because of the holy atmosphere there, there have been many fortunate Divine appearances of God Shani himself. I am a devotee of God Shani. I do regularly offer my prayers and observe fasting. It is from God Shani’s divine direction, that I wrote this book. In this book related to God Shani, there are stories, the history, its place in Shanishingnapur and the world. Also, the truth of the self-appeared statue and its direction, the importance of Sade Saathi and its cures and the special aspects of God Shani. Also, the worship of God Shani and how it should be done in terms of one’s planetary chart. The festival of God Shani shows surprisingly peaceful aspects of the ‘Devalaya’ and ‘Mannat’ that devotees pray. For example, how Shanishingnapur’s importance reveals itself and its fame the world over. Also, Udasi Baba, Bhavu Banakar and other important notices are there in this book. Please read it and experience its usefulness.”

Very nice post. I had been to Shanishingnapur last year. But then I did not really know the story behind lord Shani or the place. I always thought Shani causes only harm. Thanks for the post for now I know better.

The coming of God Shani into the village

By the grace of God Shani, should you come to Shanishingnapur and see the idol, you’ll feel that this is not an ordinary idol but an self-appeared idol. About how this 16” 6” feet tall and 16” 6” feet wide idol came here has a true story to it.

Where today stands the idol of God Shani, there used to be a housing settlement with 32 huts. About 350 years ago, God himself appeared here. Since then, he has remained here itself. In those days, there wasn’t so much population or progress there. There were not that many roads, vehicles amenities etc of modern day life. There were a lot of trees and grasslands here. Nearby, there was a lot of filth, plants and fields. Today, for the comfort of devotees there are tar roads, staying places and food arrangements which were lacking in those days. Now, with the co-operation of the villagers and the Trust made with God Shani’s devotees, the Government has supported the village and a lot of activity can be seen.

Shanidev is the real judge and God

Remember that God Shani is the judge of our thoughts. In this society, whenever people become preys to lust, anger and greed and spoil their purity and with full awareness commit sins, injustice and crimes on others all around them and while hiding in such darkness they commit such sinful deeds, they are mistaken that whatever deeds they are doing is not being watched by anybody. And then by doing so, people begin to believe that God is pleased with them and in such a state of vanity and ego, they begin tom believe that they are everything. They begin to feel that there is no God and they are God himself. Thus, to make such people repent for their follies, and to purify them God Shani punishes them. So Sade Saathi starts, God Shani becomes the Judge and after punishes the person and purifies him. Firstly, remember that God Shani has a delicate gaze. Secondly, he gives the fruits of one’s ‘Karma’. Thirdly, whatever a person does, God Shani grants him the results accordingly. God Shani gives proportionate happiness and unhappiness to people based on their ‘Karma’.

Does God Shani trouble us?

This is ‘Kalyug’ (modern times). These modern times are filled with sin and un-chastity. And in this unchaste era, people are chasing the amenities like internet, television, airplanes, trains, computers and so on in pursuit of happiness breathlessly. Remember that, happiness and peace are going further and further away from man. In this melee, people say that God Shani is troubling us. But why? Do they think that God has nothing better to do? Has he enmity with everybody? Is God Shani an enemy? But it is honest opinion that Shani is concerned about all beings in the world, no friendship with anyone, no enmity with anyone.

People are more scared of God Shani than the punishment he gives. What happens is that people die more from the fear of death than from death itself. And God Shani is more easily pleased than people believe. The devotion of God Shani solves all the problems pertaining to the body, family, society, mind, finances and occupation. People have taken the name of God Shani to scare others, but very little has been done to dispel that fear.

Reverent greetings for God Shani

From childhood I kept hearing that God Shani gives suffering to people. That he is a source of troubles, heartless, hard-hearted, fearful and so on. I used to listen to the opinions of others and would be crestfallen and wonder if this was all true? Whom we regard as God and pray to him, why would he be giving troubles to anybody? I kept seeing such incidents and situations but it was my firm belief that God Shani was not like this. What is needed for this is courage, seriousness and patience.

There was a worry and misery in my family. My brother-in-law was of Kavi village of Jambusar’s Taluk of Gujarat’s Baruch district, which is on the sea coast. He became a victim of the politics of that place. He was sent out of the job from there. There were four people in the family. There was everything but it turned to nothing. All were worried and troubled. All tried hard but for three years continuously, nothing happened good happened. My sister and brother-in-law and their children were wandering from pillar to post. Shrimati Heeraben and Saheb Rao were helpless. In Jan 2004, I came to Shanishingnapur and prayed to God Shani. The miracle that happened was that from 2nd February, I was inspired to write the ‘granth’. And there, in Baruch district the police official gave them justice and took them on jobs from 3rd February. And I realized that this miracle was only of God Shani.

The greatness and glory of God Shani

1. Pray to God Shani even in the happy moments of your life.
2. Get a ‘darshan’ of God Shani in the bad periods of your life.
3. Even in the times of trouble and agony, pray to God Shani.
4. Have faith in God Shani in your bad times also.
5. Express gratitude to God Shani at every moment of your life.
In the above 5 tenets, Shri. Ghule has summed up his life and his devotion to God Shani and also has shoed us the way.

In one place, I have called God Shani a Jugde and once, a real situation came up. Near Gandhinagar in Gujarat, there is a rural place called Rupal. There, in an annual function, at once, 25000 kilos of ghee are offered in prayer. This in itself is a record. The next day, this was thrown on the road for poor people to use in their food. Based on this, some social activists sought a stay order. On the 1st October 2003, the Ahmedabad High Court decreed that ‘ Just as in Maharashta’s Shanishingnpur’s ‘devasthan’, the immeasurable oil which is offered and is given in tender to soap factories, in return of 30 lakhs worth of charity to devotees and development of the ‘devasthan’, similarly the 25000 kilos of ghee, collected from the 27 rural sources should be put to the benefit of the needy people’.

The beauty of the description of Ramarajya in Goswami Tulsidas’s Ramacharitmanas, as in ‘Tretayug’ is seen in Shanishingnapur too.
‘There is abundance of everything and happiness. The town of Ayodhya is filled with bejeweled palaces. Houses are glowing the lamps of gems. Here, no one is poor, unhappy or miserable. All around there is beauty and purity. All the inhabitants of Ayodhya are healthy and beautiful. Colourful gardens with flower trees abound. And the roads are akin to heaven.’

What is Sade Saathi?

Sade Saathi has many names such as Sade Saathi, Shanichari, Musibathi, Aafath etc. Nature is well understood by the science of astrology. Astrology has many branches such as Vedic Astrology, Industrial astrology, personal astrology etc. In these branches of astrology, the study of Rasi and the effect of planets have an important place. In the science of astrology, all the aspects of life are affected by the combination of planets in a group. Every planet is attributed with a special role. Happiness and sorrow play hide and seek in man’s life. In some people’s lives there is more happiness as there is more unhappiness in some people’s lives. The attaining of ‘moksha’ is the ultimate goal of man’s life.

In the astro-charts of many astrological texts planet Shani has been given the place of
the planet of sorrow. This may be true only up to an extent and in certain aspects. It is shown that God Shani, soon after his birth, showed a glimpse of his nature to his father God Surya. God Shani, who symbolizes righteousness and justice, creates Sade Saathi.
Sade Saathi is a period of 7 and ½ years. Shani takes 30 years to traverse all the 12 planets. He stays 2 and ½ years in one ‘rasi’ or sun sign. When the planet, aspects the lord of the house, then the good benefits are derived. In the garland of planets, God Shani is called ‘Chaya Martand’. When ‘Chaya Grah’ or the star passes through a house, that star sign’s previous star’s sign and the next star sign is troubled. That is ‘Chaya Grah’. This belief is accepted in Sade Saathi. When Shani passes through the 12th house of the birth chart for the second time, then it is called as Sade Saathi. Shani stays in a house for 2 and ½ years. This way, God Shani’s transit through 3 houses is called Sade Saathi. (2 and ½ x 3= 7and ½). Therefore, this patch of 7and1/2 years is known to bring suffering, sorrows and misfortune. This is known by people as Sade Saathi.

In the birth chart of Moon sign, when there is Shani behind and ahead, till then it is called Sade Saathi. In the normal course, the effects of Sade Saathi are common to all creatures. Then, whether they are saints, commoners, great people, spiritualists, Gods or godly people, all have them have the same effect on them. Whether it is King Veer Vikramaditya or Nala Damayanti or people of all kinds, the effect of it is the same on all.

Whichever Rasi has Sade Saathi, on that day’s previous Rasi when Shani is upon it then it is called Ascendant Sade Saathi. Ascendant Sade Saathi for some in the middle and for some in the end as Decscendant Sade Saathi is favourable. Any big solution sought for Sani in Sade Saathi, takes a small shape. And when the time comes for the benefit, it comes in a big way like a miracle. As per astrology, Shani’s Sade Saathi is understood in three parts. One is from Lagna, the other is from Moon and the third is from Sun. Over a period of thirty years, every chart is affected by Sade Saathi once, whether he is a lion or a king. Sade Saathi touches every birth chart. The Moon’s aspected Sade Saathi is accepted in north India. In the chart, where the moon is seen one house before and one house after, till then there will be the effect of Shani. For example, till Aries and Taurus , there will be the effect of Sade Saathi.

In Sade Saathi,a great deal of misery, trouble, fearsome disease, excess sorrow, loss of money, blame, insult, illness, imprisonment etc are undergone. By taking the help of ‘Vedic Vidhi’ and the mantras, penance etc the fearful effects of Sade Saathi can be reduced. In brief, Sade Saathi or seven and half years of God Shani put the normal life of man into great distress. This is the direct result of Sade Saathi that normal, ongoing work comes to a stand still. The desire of students to study goes away. And people who are looking for a job go further on and on in this quest. In the birth chart, if Shani is exalted, powerfully placed then the Sade Saathi will be that much more pronounced. Which means, there will be a great loss of wealth.

The effect of Sade Saathi will be on Aquarius, Capricorn and Pisces in the Lagna Rasi or it will weaken the strength of the Rasi. Which means, it will reduce finance and success. Shani’s Sade Saathi troubled many brave and strong kings, but they never let go of truth. Sade Saathi gave them too much trouble but it could destroy them. Raja Harishchandra did not abandon truth till the end. Only then, God Shani was pleased, restored him to the throne and gave him progeny, wealth and made him pure again. He gave him the strength to do penance.

When one is affected by Sade Saathi, one should make use of prayer as a boatman and cross the river of bad times. One should resort to falsehood, theft. Robbery, vices, bad habits etc in one’s life. One should remember that thee is no role of God Shani in Sade Saathi. He cleanses us of the sins of our previous births and brings us closer to the divinity of Ishwar. During the period of Sade Saathi, if we take the help of our own prayers, penance and ‘mantras’ and hold on to truth, then it will have been worth it.

The cure for Sade Saathi

Maha mantra :

“ Om nilanjana samabhasam | Ravi putram yamagrajam ||

Cahaya martanda samhubhutam | Tama namami Shanescharam||”

The person who has Sade Saathi should recite Shani Mahamantra 23000 times within the 7 and ½ years. Shani Mahamantra’s recital should finish within 23 days. Thus, by reciting the Shani Mahamantra by a ‘mala’ ten times a day, it will finish in 23 days. If the person is young, then his parents can do it for him. While this praying is on, the person should eat simple food. He must sleep on the floor on a bed sheet and live the life of a ‘bramhachari’. It should be remembered that the praying of the Shani Mahamantra should be done at one stretch in one sitting at one place. Whoever wants to perform the ‘shanti’, must perform it on all Shanichari Amavahshya’. On a half meter of black cloth, taking the ‘pandraya yantra’, the ‘sindoor’ of God Hanuaman and oil should be mixed and the ‘yantra’ should be created. After tying a coconut without water in it, by tracing the body’s length with it seven times, it should be consigned to flowing water.

Why and how is God Shani worshipped.

1) After a pure bath, men should go to the deity’s foundation dressed in a wet cloth.
2) Women cannot go to the foundation.
3) If Shani is coming into your ‘rasi’
4) If you are afflicted by Sade Saathi.
5) If there is ‘adayya’ in your ‘rasi.’
6) If you are suffering from the gaze of God Shani.
7) If you are working in anything such as connected to iron, travel, trucks, transport, oil, petroleum, medical, press and courts.
8) If you do any good work.
9) If in your occupation is related to commerce and there is loss in business and worry thereof.
10) If you are suffering from incurable diseases like cancers, AIDS, kidney, leprosy, paralysis, heart ailments, diabetes, skin ailments and are fed up, then you should most certainly worship God Shani with ‘ahishek’.
11) One must remove the cap or head gear and then pray God.
12) In the houses of devotees where there has been a birth or death recently, they do not go to the deity.

Rasi-wise recommendation for Gods

There are different Gods for the 12 ‘Rasi’s. Praying to the particular God of a Rasi gives better fruits. Similarly, there are different Gods for different lagans. The layman cannot decide which god to pray for which Rasi and which Lagna. Therefore, he does not obtain the desired results. Thus, there is abundant knowledge in astrology to give help for making certainty out of uncertainty. Hence, based on a person’s Lagna and Rasi, a person can pray to his dear God with devotion.

At a glance:

No.  Rashi Rashi      Dev/devatha            Rashi prathyadi Devatha

Shani Amavasya

On the Saturday of New Moon, it is known as Shaneshchari Amavasya. Normally, in a year, there will be two or three Shaneshchari Amavasya. On the Shaneshchari Amavasya in Shingnapur, there will be arrangements for the festival. From the mid- night of the Friday till the mid-night of the Saturday, prayers, offerings and ‘abhishek’ will be held. From the Devasthan (temple), a ‘Mahapuja’ will be held. For the pilgrims who come here for ‘Darshanam’, their ‘Stotra’ will be on continuously. Almost 8 to 10 lakh people come within 24 hours. Because of the immense crowd, many devotees who cannot get a glimpse of the deity from the foundation, are happy and content getting it from below itself.

The importance of Shaneshchari Amavasya lies in the fact that out of the rays of the Sun God, the main rays are called ‘Ama’. It is from the main rays of Sun God called ‘Ama’ that the Sun God gives brightness to the three worlds. In this ‘Ama’ day, especially, God Moon stays. Therefore, it is called Shani Amavasya. This Amavasya is known to give good fruits to all religions. In ‘Shradhya Karma’, this carries a lot of importance

Shani Jayanthi

This is considered as the birth day of God Shani. And this is celebrated with great devotion and happiness. This day comes on Vaishak Vadya Chaturdasi Amavasya.

On this day, the idol appears blue in colour. Five days of ‘yadnya’ and seven days of ‘bhajan- pravachan and ‘kirtan’ are held in the sweltering heat of May. On this day, the resident priest (pandit) is called and along with 11 Brahmin pandits, the ‘Laghurudraabhishek is performed. This goes on for a total of 12 hours. In the end, with the ‘Maha Puja’, the function comes to an end.

In the beginning, on this same day, The idol is cleaned with ‘panchamrut’, ‘Gangajal’, oil and water from the wells near by the idol. The water from the well is used only in the service of the idol. It is not used for the other needs of the Devastahan. After the bath, the ‘Nauratnahaar’ is placed on the idol.

Gudhi Padava

‘Chaitra Shukla Pratipada’ or the first day of the Indian Calender is the good day out of 3 and ½ good days. So, devotees seeking relief from their woes, seek the ‘darshan’ of God on this day. Here, the festival begins on this day. So, the shops wear a festive look on this day. ‘Ganga Jal’( Gangodak, the confluence of Pravara and Godavari rivers) is brought by the devotees of the village in pots. Those who bring the ‘Ganga Jal’ are people who ask something from God and taken some vows for it. At least one person from every household participates in this festival. The place of the confluence is about 42 kms from Shingnapur. The ‘Ganga Jal’ is brought on bare foot.

After bringing the Ganga Jal, the people stop outside the village. Next morning, they collect gain and with the flag and chanting the devotees are brought into the village. Then God Shani is bathed in the ‘Ganga Jal’. During this stage, no other devotees are allowed near the foundation. After this, those seeking vows present the ‘prasdadam’ to other devotees.

True stories

Friends, there is a true story from the ‘granth’ I want to tell you. So far, you have heard about the many stories and seen the miracles of God Shaneshwar. But, the story of July 1978 astounds us. On the 13th May 2006, on a Saturday, to seek and learn about the true experiences of God Shani I was present with Professor Shiavaji Rao Darandale in the house of Smt. Chandrabhaga Devi Dhondiram Darandale. On hearing what they had experienced, I was left biting my nails.

Smt. Chandrabhaga Devi, who was extolling the grace of God Shani told us that her in those days, her newly married daughter Sakardevi Karale, from Shingve village of Pathardi Taluka, which was her in-laws place had come to their home at Shingnapur. Because she was newly married, she was wearing a lot of jewelry. “On the same day, as four unknown persons, seeming to be beggars entered our house. Along with the alms, they also saw our jewelry and became happy. There was no fear in our minds and we gave the alms and we came into our home.

But on the same night, at around 1.30, the same four persons came into our home to rob our jewelry. I felt that they had come with the intention of robbing the jewelry. And it was proved right in a little while. They started fighting with us to take away the jewelry.
To escape from them, my daughter and I escaped from them and went towards the house of Anna Saheb Kushinath Darandale who lived just 100 metres away.

But, what a strange occurrence! We saw them and were going away from them were seeing them, right in front of them but they could not see us! God Shani was protecting us and our jewelry from them! And though they were not blind, they could not see us. They had lost their sight suddenly. It was because of the grace of God Shani that our jewelry and we were protected. After this incident, I and my husband Shri Dhondiram Tukaram Darandale pray and serve God Shani day and night. After this true story which I have seen with my eyes, I have totally surrendered to Mahatma (Great God) God Shani.”

Another trustee Shri Saheb Rao Tukaram Darandale said that this true story occurred in front of him. Therefore, as a result of this true story, perhaps the entire family is immersed in the prayer of God Shani. And so, the elder son of Smt. Chandrabhaga Devi is now the chief of the Shri Shaneshwar Devasthan. As a result the new chief is involved, day and night, in the service of the devotees and people of the area.

When I asked Smt. Chandrabhaga Devi, more questions about her elder son who was the chief of the Devasthan, she said honestly that her son, as the chief of, must do good work, help the poor and the needy, serve all the devotees coming here. And that way, the name of the Shri Shaneshwar Devasthan should become famous not only in Maharashtra, but all over the world. This was her only prayer to the all powerful God.

Where is Shanishingnapur ?

Shignapur is situated at a distance of 6 kms from Ghodegaon on Aurangabad-Ahmednagar highway. The distance from Aurangabad is 84 kms and from Ahmednagar it is 35 kms. From Ghodegaon, there is a motorable tar road up to the idol of Shri Shaneshwar and is open in all the seasons. The population of this village is about 3000. There are no regular buses but on pilgrimage days there are special transport buses plying to Shignapur.

Information of the village

Primarily, almost all people here in this village are descendants of Maharaja Chatrapati Shivaji and they are normally known by the names of Darandale, Bankar, Shete and Borrude. People by other names and castes are very few. The village itself is small but famous for its name. Houses without doors and windows in the village and the fields are many. The people of these four families have become relatives by marriages among the children in their families.

This village adores and celebrates many ancient customs, rituals and festivals with gusto and happiness. Since there are good roads, a lot of people come and go from here by buses, cars and autorichshaws. The people of this village are not victims of bad habits.
There are no signs of liquor, gambling and non-vegetarianism. By the grace of God Shani, the people here are God fearing, religious, honest and trustworthy. Here, not once has a theft occurred. The homes here have no doors and windows. Therefore, the windows of their minds are always open. They are very hospitable to guests.

In this village of saints, God Shani is the lord and God of everybody and every thing.
It is believed here that one reaps one sows and one gets the fruit of one’s actions immediately. Some of the things that are almost not at all used here are windows, door stoppers, chains, suitcases, latches, locks and the like. Because, it is believed here that it is the wish of God Shani himself that locks should not be used. Because the people believe that the protection of their homes and the village is rested with God Shani. They believe that God Shani himself says, “ You live with total peace of mind all day inside your house and outside. Nothing bad will happen to you. I’ll protect you and your homes.”

It is on the advice of God Shani that doors, windows and locks are not used here. As a result, this village is viewed differently by different people, worldwide. However, elsewhere there is so much of theft in the world. There are locks on locks used. Yet thieves continues with theft. And nobody is happy. But in Shanishingnapur, since many years homes have no doors and locks and are kept open all day and night. Yet not a single thief has committed a theft. Generations in this village have witnessed this for years.

I went to meet a lot of people in their homes, their lanes, fields and hutments and found that the people, men and women, young and old, are living in harmony and happiness. They come together in Indian festivals and celebrations and take part with a lot of harmony and feeling. Whatever happens here, happens with the blessings and the people’s faith in God Shani. If at all, any ill-fortune, hurt, illness, and natural loss occurred here, these also are regarded as having occurred by the will of God Shani. They
view as God sent penalty and punishment. If any sinner commits any sin here, God Shani is known to punish him. If any thing is taken away by any person or a devotee by mistake, for example any clothes, bedding, bag etc., by the miracle of God Shani, they have been known to come back and return them or send them by post or courier. And after that they experience, inner peace and happiness. So now, the thought will cross your minds as to how God Shani himself came into this village?

Some examples

Just as parents help their children who are stuck in trouble, similarly God also helps his devotees who are in trouble, either seen or unseen by them. Man’s life is rife with many kinds of troubles and struggles. And man finds a way out of it. In the hearts of men, there is a great deal of devotion and faith in God. Because of this faith in him, God pulls men out of trouble, gives him courage and peace. There are countless such examples with us that by the grace of Shri Shaneshchar, Shanishingnapur has becomes famous all over India.

Criticism of god and reference

God Shaneshwar is very hot, strong and staunch like Sri Shankar. Shaneshwar is supreme to all Gods. He effect is so extreme that even Shankar had to flee to Kailash because of Shani’s fear.

The king of Ujjain was known for his religiousness, generosity and loyalty. Once by oversight, he blamed Shani Maharaja and due to this he had to suffer all the earthly miseries for seven and half years. Like Vikramaditya, many people who criticized Shanidev had the experience of misfortunes.

• Shri Jethabai a rich and big merchant of Jat State came to Shignapur on the insistence of devotees. He saw the idol and uttered ‘how is this idol and how is this God’ ‘How do these people worship and pay respect to such a God’. He blamed God and returned to his car without worshipping. The moment he sat in the car, his nose tip became black. The other persons with saw this and brought it to his notice. He took it lightly thinking that some black thing must have stuck and brushed it with his dhoti. The black spot remained as it was as they traveled and by the time he reached his house, half of his face became black. He tried to wash but in vain. He took treatment from the doctors. This too did not work. He was very much worried and in this state of mind he remembered that some one told him of the black spot while boarding the car at Shignapur and recalled his criticism of Shanidev. Thinking this could be a punishment for the untoward expressions, he returned to Shignapur and after worshipping Shanidev asked for forgiveness. The spot started fading out and by the time he reached house, the black spot vanished totally.

• Shri Auti, Mamledar of Newasa came to Shignapur on the orders of Government to publicise ’War Loan Fund’. People were afraid of him. As they were to pay war fund, many of them left for their fields. Only a few were present who were worshipping Shanidev. Mamledar said to them that they couldn’t avoid the war hazards by worshipping this black God. He told I am devotee of white God. What will the stone do? He said that they all should pay war fund and war tax and get rid of the war disasters by pleasing the white Gods. He warned the villagers to contribute the amount to the Patel who in turn would remit it at Taluka Headquarters. He came home and found that a black boil appeared on his neck. He became restless due to the pains. Doctors tried their best to cure him but in vain. The treatment went on for a year. Some one told him that this might be a curse of Shanidev. At last, he came to Shignapur and performed puja with all the rituals and begged pardon. The eruption then disappeared.

• Sri Shankarrao Annasaheb Rajhans of Sonai was the Kulkarni. He came to Shignapur for a Government work when worship of Shanidev was going on. He had to wait till the puja was over. Angered over the delay, he said ‘what do these ignorant people worship?’ A stone comes rolling and people regard it as Shanidev. With these words he criticised God. He then developed unbearable temperature. On completion of the work he was to go to Ghodegaon. His physical condition became so weak that he had to go back to Sonai where he lost his speech. He tried different treatments but in vain. The police sub-inspector of Sonai Sri Prahlad Manohar Atitkar advised him to beg pardon of Shanidev. He vowed to take darshan on five Saturdays and begged pardon. He then regained his speech.

Sheetey-kaul Lagana (The dropping of God’s flower)

The populace of Ahmednagar in Maharashtra, are many times, affected by drought. Because of scanty rainfall, repeatedly drought strikes. The main occupation of people here is agriculture. Because of drought, drinking water for people and cattle comes into acute shortage. They wander from place to place. Then, the villagers of Shanishingnapur pray to their dear God Shani. They do ‘kaul’. Then by the grace of God Shani, the rains come. This is believed far and wide. People wait for the rains till the coming of the ‘Punarvsu’ star. If it still does not rain, people come together and ask for the decision of God Shani. They ask of him whether it will rain or no. This is called ‘Sheetey-kaul Lagana’. People say that the meteorological department’s forecast may go wrong, but the ‘kaul’ (decision’) of God Shani will always be right.

For this, the pooja of Shanichar is performed. The entire premises is kept clean. The ‘abhishek’ of God Shani is performed with’ Ganga Jal’ and ‘panchamrut’. The ‘maternal uncle and nephew ’, who are the residents of Shingnapur, will be fasting. The person awaiting the ‘decision’ of God Shani will also be fasting. People come from far and wide to see this and wait in the courtyard. In this assemblage, nobody wears a black cap, belt or carries a black umbrella. If they have brought it along, it is kept away. Afterwards, ‘gomutra’(cow’s urine) is sprinkled on everybody.

The ceremony of seeking ‘kaul’ starts in the afternoon at 3 O’clock. The ‘maternal uncle and nephew duo’ climb the foundation of the deity. Only 3 people will be on the foundation. The third person will be the one who brings the ‘Ganga Jal’ is not touched by anybody. The maternal uncle and nephew, in wet clothes are made to stand facing each other in an East westerly direction. At this time, there will be chanting of God Shani’s name. Rods of three feet length will have been kept immersed in water all night. This water will be used for God Shani only. The maternal uncle and nephew hold the rods to their waists from either sides with both hands. First, they pray to God. Then, for some time smoke of ‘dhoopa ’is given there. The person who is going to ask the question asks the maternal uncle and nephew their stars’ names. Upon taking the names of the stars accordingly, if it is going to rain, the rods come close together on their own. If it is going to rain heavily, the rods will stick together closely. Then, the devotees, chant aloud the names of God Shani loudly.

In this ceremony, only three stars’ names are taken. They are Punarvasu, Uttara and Hasta. Depending on whichever star’s decision is obtained, the rods come together.
It is in period that the rains come. If it is not going to rain, then the rods move away and outwards from each other and bend downwards. There is historical evidence that in the years 1952, 1962, 1972,1978 and 1984 this ‘kaul’ was asked of God Shani and it came true. In 1952, despite the rods being brought together many times, the rods would go way from each other. And it did not rain anywhere, while it rained well in other years.

It is a reality that on the day of 8th September 1984, ‘kaul’ was asked of God Shani. At that time, in the stars of Punarvasu, Uttara and Hasta, there was a lot of rain. On the same day, throughout the Nevasa taluka, it rained. It is strange that in other places of Maharashtra also, it rained well. Today also, we get to see and hear such miracles. Isn’t this one of the strange and uncommon things of the world?

The wondrous temple of the world

Man does not surrender completely anywhere without reason. Without miracles, without experiences, without jolts a man will not fold his hands and place his forehead in complete surrender anywhere. In this modern age, science is racing ahead. Science has progressed beyond imagination. But on seeing the miracles of God Shani at Shingnapur, the age of science has also been spellbound. No matter how much of an atheist a person may be, after seeing the wonders of Shanishingnapur, his mind will undergo a change. And every devotee will surrender before Shaneshchar.

All over India, God Shani is there in various places and especially so in Maharashtra.
But in Shanishingnapur, he occupies a special place. Because of its name as the Shani ‘Deavasthan’, it has become popular all over the world. Upon entering the border of Shingnapur, one experiences a wonderful feeling. The feelings of the devotee become profound. And peace descends upon the mind. Here, no priest or ‘pandit’ annoys the vsitor. All poojas and abhisheks are performed voluntarily. And unlike other places of worship, the priests do not solicit the devotees. They do not fleece the devotees in any way. There are no temples which falsely allure. There is an atmosphere which brings peace and happiness to the mind. A lot of prayer material and items are visible to the eye, but one can take a few things or, it is more than enough to join both hands and bow the forehead in prayer. There are no shopkeepers here who can rob or fleece the devotees. One can take the items needed for the prayer first and then pay later. Also, it is necessary to take the bill for the pooja aforehand. No priest here will ask for the alms (dakshina) for the pooja of God Shani. Nor will there be a beggar.

There will be no jostling and pushing during and after the pooja. One can come at ease
And pray at peace. After seeing such a wonderful atmosphere, all the devotees become very happy. The specialty of this place is that the local people come to the aid of the devotees and ask nothing in return. Innumerable people come here seeking vows and wishes. The trustees come forward selflessly, on their own, and help the devotees without taking any payment in return.

The famous piligrimage centre Nevasa

The famous piligrimage centre Nevasa is an ancient place where the sacred river Pravara is flowing. On both the sides of river banks there are number of historical places, cultural centres, dharmic centres, shykshanic centres of ancient times. As such He is known as place punya bhumi.

In this holy land the marati language sacred book “Jnaneswari” was written by Sant Jnaneswar in 12th century. This holy book could be seen each and every family in the entire Maharastra State and every citizen will chant and read the book every day throughout the year.

Also on this land there was a temple of Karaveereswar; Sant Jnaneswar wrote the holy book Jnaneswari in this temple. We could see today a pillar where Sant Jnaneswar used to sit attached to it. Acutally the Karaveereswar temple was there about 650 years ago, though the entire temple was destroyed due to weather vagaries, this pillar stood as a test of the times for a long period; not only that the pillar is not shifted but it is there where it was when the temple was existing. The present temple is reconstructed as per the direction and guidance of Bansi Tambe Baba. Even today we could see theinscription on the pillar of Karaveereswar Temple like this;
“Om namah (Kara) Veereswar pitha mahen yath poorv
(Datt) Akandavarthi thylayar prathimas sadha hi tat
(roopakaa) nam shatak sankyaa deyyaa achandr soo
yenk (yaschi) karoothi drustri h tasya (saha)
poorve vrajyatythaa mangalam mahaashri!”

In the newly constructed building, the dining hall has capacity to accommodate rows of about 800 people. Even in this hall the idol of Shri Datta is installed, alongwith Shri Ram, Sita Lakshman and Shri Hanuman. The new building was constructed in the year 1957 and in that sampoorna Shri Jnaneswari holy book parayan was carried out and the script was written on the walls of the temple. And in this temple hall every year Shri Krishna Jayanthi, Gokulasttami festival are also performed. During these days of festivity thousands of people assemble in the temple comlex. Apart from performing the festivals, cultural,
spiritual discourses, speeches, etc; are also conducted very beautifully and with pleasure.

Lord Shanidev is a perfect teacher, if someone is under affliction; then think that saturn is taking a class and trying to teach you something to the perfection; only teacher in this universe who never asks guru dakshina and thus making human being's life prosperous. It is very easy to appease lord saturn.

Let me tell something that i know about my teacher:

In the court of saturn, rahu is a prosecutor and kethu is as defence lawyer. The saturn judgement is on behalf of jupiter. Saturn promised jupiter that while giving the judgement, the rules of dharma, artha, kama and moksha will be considered at most. Saturn likes truth, honesty & kind; those who follow these 3 things in the period of afflictions he will suffer least and will learn soon. Much troubles will be vanished.

Simple charms to appease saturn & remedies for affliction ( this has been tested for its results ):

1. Feed black dogs, crows or buffaloes on every saturday.

2. Donate to the poor or needy or to the beggars near the temple of lord hanuman or shanidev.

3. Wear a black horse shoe ring in the middle finger.

4. Drop almonds into the well or Throw a fist of sesame seeds to the river which is flowing in the south direction.

5. Fix a Black horseshoe at the top of the front door.

6. Listen to the stories of saturn with complete devotion on saturdays.

7. If possible visit once to the thirunallar in tiruchy district ( Tamil nadu ) or Shani singanur.

Worshipping through Mantras:

Gayathri Mantra -

Kaaka dhwajaaya vidhmahe
Kadga hasthaaya dhimahi
Thanno mandha prachodhayath ||

Recite this gayathri mantra for 108 times only in hora of saturn on every saturday ( 6:30 a.m to 7.30 a.m, 1.30 pm to 2:30 pm & 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm )

Moola mantra:

Om praam preem praum sah shaneshcharaya namah ||

Recite this mantra 21 rounds using a rosary of amethyst or black hakik on any saturday in shuklapaksha on an asterism of pushya, anuradha or uttarabhadra and wear the rosary in your neck.

To be avoided:

Dark colored cloths, vehicles etc; Travelling to south on saturdays

Worshipping through Yantras can also done. Provided that yantra should be drawn only on bhoj patra by a yantra sadhak by following rules of yantra shastra perfectly; worshipping such a yantra is beneficial.

Evil eye of saturn will be vanished, if a person follows any of above methods when he is under affliction.

Maharathna of saturn: Blue diamond
Rathna of saturn: Blue sapphire or Black sapphire
Uparathna of saturn: Blue spinel, Blue topaz, Amethyst, Lapiz or Turqoise

Gems are not for the sadesaathi unless a life stone but to remove evils of the planet it should be worn.

Peace

True Story

Story of Shanidev and God Krishna

“Kokilavan Dham” is the famous temple of Shanidev. This temple is situated at Kosi Kalan, near Mathura in Uttar Pradesh (India). It is believed that Kokilavan Dham is the place where Lord Shri Krishna gave Darshan to Shani Dev. This temple is visited by many devotees on Saturday. There is an interesting story about Shani Dev and God Krishna.

When God Krishna was born all god visited to Nandgaon. God Shani was also one of them. Everyone was allowed to take Darshan of God Krishna but not Shanidev. When Shani dev was going to take Darshan of Krishna then Yashoda stopped him at the door and said,” You can’t see my baby because your name is fearful. If my baby sees you, he will be frightened.”

Hearing this Word of Yashoda, Shani Dev felt disappointed and went to nearby forest and started penance. After a short time God Krishna appeared before him in the forest and asked him, “What is the problem. Why you are in forest?” Shani dev replied, “O God! Please tell me one thing, when I am doing my duty to punish people according to their work (Karma). Then why people think about me that I am malignant and cruel. Why people think that Shani dev creates trouble only. Why do they avoid even my shadow? Today also when all god could enjoy the bliss of your Darshan, I am denied that right and benediction."

God Krishna advised Shanidev to stay put near Nandanvan. He also granted him the boon that whoever came to his temple to pray would immediately be freed from all worries and afflictions. At last, God Krishna visited the temple and began playing the divine flute. Hearing the sound of flute, the Gopis arrived but Krishna turned himself in the form of a Cuckoo (Koyal in Hindi). That place of the forest where Krishna appeared before Shanidev has since been called “Kokilavan”. Now it is famous for “Kokilavan Shanidham”.

Story of Shanidev and Lord Shiva

One morning, Shanidev went to his Guru and bowed him. Lord Shiva asked to Shanidev, “What’s a problem and what can I do for you.” Shanidev said to Lord Shiva that he thinks to passing over their moon. Lord Shiva was shocked to hearing this and said to Shanidev, “O my dear Shani, Pity on me and please don’t pass over my moon.” Shani dev said, “O my lord, I am sorry, but I can’t skip this constellation, that is my duty. If I will give you compassion, then everybody will ask me for this compassion and maybe insult me. So it is not possible, I am going to gaze you within a very short time. That is the way the things have to go on. Although I am your disciple, but for now you have asked my grace.”

Listening to this word of Shanidev, Lord Shiva understood that Shani will do those things which he said, so he asked to Shani that how long Shani will be gracing him. Shani said, “My period for saade saathi is 7.5 years, so I will grace on you till 7.5 years.” But Shiva was not agreeing for this. Again Shani said, Ok, let me reside with you only for 5 years or at least for 2.5 years. But Shiva was not ready for 2.5 years, nor 7.5 months or even 7 days. Then Shanidev thought it was too much for him as his disciple to be so cruel with him, because a Guru is like a mother - always compassionate always worthy for worship, so Shani bowed down to his feet and spoke in an humble voice, "I am very pleased with you, O my Lord, so ask for any boon you wish for." Lord Shiva said to Shanidev, "O Shani, if you are pleased with me, please bestows me this boon that you will not be entering my body at all." Shanidev said to his Guru, “If I will spare you, no one in the world will respect me and maybe insult me, still I will give you this boon. I will stay in your moon sign for only 7.5 prahar means 22.5 hours.” Lord Shiva said, “No, I think you should stay in my moon sign for 1 and ¼ prahar means 3 hours and 45 minutes.” Lord Shiva thoughts that Shanidev would not be do anything within this short period. So, Shanidev decided that I will show to my guru that what I can do within these 3 hours and 45 minutes. Lord Shiva might be unaware of shanidev ability and capabilities.

So when the time came of Shanidev’s gaze, Lord Shiva went to Gangaa River to take bath by thinking that the time will be passed in his bath and also grace period will be over. Shanidev takes the form of melon merchant and met to his guru on his way and as his shadow fell on him, his body and mind changed. Shanidev showed him two watermelons. The watermelon was one small and one big, and also showed him that how good they were by cutting a little part of them. Lord Shiva got very happy to see those juicy melons and bought them from Shanidev who was in the form of melon seller. He put them in a bag and proceeded towards the river. After taking bath, Lord Shiva filled his water pot with Gangaa’s water, picked the watermelon bag and proceeded towards town.

Previous day of this day, that city's both King's and the Prime Minister's son went for hunting. By the grace of Shanidev, they loose their way in the forest. The king was worried about his son and he send to their soldiers in the forest for searching of the princes. One of the search party went to Guru Shiva and asked him what was in his bag? Lord Shiva answered them that there are watermelons in this bag. Again soldiers asked, “Why this blood is dripping from your bag? Are you a murderer?” To hearing this word of the soldiers, Lord Shiva was shocked and looked at the bag, he also found that really blood was dripping from his bag. In the meantime those soldiers took off the bag from Shiva’s shoulder and opened it. They found that two severed heads in it. Those heads were of those of Princes and the prime ministers son’s. By the gaze of Shanidev, the watermelon had changed into the heads of those two boys.

The soldiers bound him with ropes and took him in the front of King. The king felt very sad to see the heads of those boys as well as got very angry. The king said, “He is not a Brahman, he is a murderer. So take him and put him on a stake.” All the peoples of the palace came there to see the killer of the prince and started throwing stones on Sadhu. Lord Shiva was extremely depressed at all this. So, when soldiers wanted to put him on the stake, Lord Shiva said to soldiers, “Please wait for a few minutes only, and if I am saved, I will give you 10000 silver coins.” Lord Shiva knew that Shani’s gaze will be end soon. The soldiers were agreed for this. After a very short time, Shanidev gaze was expired. After expiring of gaze Prince and the prime minister’s son entered the palace. Seeing them alive everybody got very happy. Immediately the king sent a messenger to the soldiers that not to put the Sadhu on stake as their children were came back safe and alive. After listening to this massage, Lord Shiva was taken to the palace by soldiers. The king felt very sad and also asked to Shiva for his forgiveness. Lord Shiva said, “O king, don’t worry, you are innocent. Whatever is happened with me and you, it’s all Shani’s illusion. After the discussion of king and Shiva, the king wanted to see the bag of lord Shiva and he found two watermelons in the bag. He arranged for the fragrant bath for Sadhu and seated on an Aasan and worshipped him and fed him delicious food. The king gave him new clothes and filled his bag with silver coins.

Lord Shiva left the palace. On the way God Shiva met the executioner, Shiva gave him all the coins. After that Shanidev met to Lord Shiva. Shanidev asked, “What is the experience of my gaze?” Lord Shiva said, “O Shani, you are great, only 3 hours and 45 minutes gaze shattered my bones, what would be happened if you had stayed with me for 7 and ½ years? Today I am agreeing that you are most terrible planet. I can bear all this things but today you promised me that you will not trouble anyone else like this in future.” Shanidev said, “O my lord, I am sorry for that, but I just wanted to show you my power. Now please pardon this child of yours, and I promised that I shall never offend you in this way again." After saying this word and bowing down to lord Shiva, Shanidev went back to his Shanilok.

Story of God Shani Dev and Hanumanji

God Hanuman is the incarnation of Lord Shiva. He is a great devotee of Lord Rama. He helped to Rama in the war with Ravan. Mace (Gada in Hindi) is the weapon of this God. The other name of Hanumanji is Mahaveer, Pavan Suta, Bajarangbali, Kesharinandan etc. Here, is the story of God shanidev & Hanumanji.

As per Hindu Epic Ramayana, When Hanuman went to the Lanka in search of Sita mata (Wife of Lord Rama). After meeting with Sita mata, when Hanumanji was coming back, he met with many God who were in clutch of Rakshash (Evil) King Ravan. God Shanidev was also there. Hanumanji helped freeing shanidev and getting out of Lanka.
Because of Hanumanji helped Shanidev they both became friends. Here, Shanidev Promised to Hanuman that anyone who prayed to him (Hanuman), he would be rescued from the baleful effects of Shanidev.

Other story of Shanidev and Hanumanji:
God Surya Dev is the Father of Shanidev. Surya dev is also the Guru (Teacher) of Hanumanji. After the completion of course, Surya dev said to Hanuman, “You have become adept in all forms of wisdom and weapons, now go to your mother Anjani” But Hanumanji requested to Surya dev “Give me an opportunity to repay for your tutelage” Suryadev said to Hanuman, “my wayward son shani is the cause of my sorrow only, Go and bring that wayward son of mine back to me”. Listening to the order of Surya dev, Hanuman went to Shanilok. When he was going to shanilok many planets tried to stop him but they were unable.
When Shanidev saw hanuman he asked to him, “Who are you? Why are you come here? Do you not fear with die?” Hanumanji replied, “I am Hanuman, The disciple of Lord Surya. Lord Shani you have all power & virtues, but your greatest drawback is disobeying your father. It’s not good & it’s the greatest sin. I have come here to take you to your father.” Hearing all this Shani became angry & said, “You don’t know my power, Powerful god also trembled with my power so better thing for you go back immediately otherwise I will burn you” Hanuman replied, “I have not came here to go back”. Then Shani Dev crooked gaze on Hanuman but shanidev could not burn him so, Shanidev sat on his head. They were inside a room. Immediately Hanuman increased his size because of which shani pressed between hanuman and the ceiling. When the pain was unbearable, Shani requested to God Hanuman to release him. When shanidev became free from Hanuman then shanidev Promised to Hanuman, “Anyone who will worship you on Saturday, I will never be terminate them.” After that shanidev & hanumanji went to Suryadev. Shanidev became happy to see them.

You can impress Hanumanji & shanidev by Reading Hanuman Chalisa.

Shani Dev's Origin

As per the story narrated from “Bhavishya Puran”, Sun is the father and Chhaya is the mother of Lord Shani. Chhaya has been called as ‘Vikshubha’ or ‘Suvarana’ also. In ‘Ganapati’ section of this Puran it has also been made clear that since his childhood, Lord Shani was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna. Since his childhood, he remained absorbed in the devotion and the dedication of his deity, Lord Krishna.

It is said that Lord Shani, remaining absorbed and thoughtful of his deity makes people deprive of their sins and pains through his three pronged lance and grants them the knowledge of their true form, thus breaking off the shackles of their misdeeds. Our Epics speak of Lord Shani, riding over the vulture, wearing blue cloths carrying bow and a trident (three pronged lance).

As per Vedic astrology, Lord Shani owns seven riders i.e. an Elephant, the Horse, the Deer, an Ass, a Dog, a Buffalo and the Vulture. Its a slow moving planet having four arms. As per ‘Bhavishya Puran’, his face is looking polite and the eyes are half-opened. He always remains absorbed in the thoughts of Lord Vasudev (Lord Krishna). His pours are wet in deep thoughts of Lord Krishna. Lord Shani always remain in the prayers of his deity, he has lusture on his face like that of the burning fire, and he is a blackish beauty in complexion and wears the yellow cloths.
He also has a most important and the righteous post among planets just because he acts as a courtier of the God. He owes the ideal role of Guru by purifying people through making them to bear with the results of their misdeeds, thus making them the pious and the pure ones.

"THE STORY OF KING DASHRATHA AND LORD SHANI"

As per the various ancient stories, the story of King Dashratha and Lord Shani is very famous. In the Kingdom of King Dashratha, Lord Shani was to transit over the ‘Rohini’ the constellation of the moon. Under such a planetary position, the living beings have to undergo death like pains and troubles due to the fatal effects of Lord Shani, since it leads to no rain for twelve long years and resulting into an acute scarcity of food grains. When he got such an information from the learned astrologers, King Dashratha, (affectionate to his subject) riding over his chariot reached the planetary world. He tried to bring round Lord Shani not to transit over ‘Rohini’, so that his subject may not suffer. When Lord Shani turned a deaf ear to his advice, he invaded over him, like that of a warrior.

Lord Shani was much pleased with King Dashratha because of his dutifulness, his warrior like behaviour and the subject-loving nature. He asked him to beg of a boon. King Dashratha requested Lord Shani, not to transit over Rohini constellation. In the presence of his father (Lord Sun), Lord Shani granted him this boon and been choked with emotions king Dashratha started praying to Lord Shani. Lord Shani, once again asked King to beg of a boon. This time he said, “You kindly never trouble the living beings unduly.”

Now, Lord Shani promised to King Dashratha, “Oh, Lord! Transiting over the first house (Lagna), fourth or the eight house of a native, I shall make the native to undergo death like troubles and pains. Despite this fact, if a native worships my idol by this prayer submitted to me by you (Dashratha Strotra), he would be spared off from my fatal effects. I shall protect him at all times."

Since that day, the prayers made by King Dashratha works like a protective device from the fatal effects of the Lord Shani. It is called 'Dashratha Krit Strotra'.

CHAYA MARTHANDA SAMBHUTAM TAM NAMAMI SHANAISWARAM ||
Chant this mantra while lighting oil lamp
Sani Trayodasi
Significance of Oil Abhisekam to SATURN
On Sani Trayodasi (thirteenth day after full or new moon) Hanuman was married to Suvarchala, daughter of the Sun (Surya) who is the sister of Sani.

One evening Hanuman was meditating before sunset, on a sea shore. At that instance the son of Sun, Sani, thought that he was so powerful and that every human, Devata and Demon was afraid of him. Sani with his ego came to the seashore where Hanuman was meditating. Sani thought that he will fight with Hanuman and will defeat him. Then Sani in his egoistic tone said that he is here and wanted Hanuman to stand up. Hanuman gently asked him to repeat what he just said and asked his particulars of why is he there and bothering him. Sani arrogantly replied that he is the son of the most brilliant Surya and is super strong, called by the name Sani, and that all beings in the universe start shivering the moment they hear his name, and said that he wanted to test Hanuman's strength. He also warned him that he is coming into Hanuman's Zodiac to influence his future. Hanuman replied with humility that he is an old monkey and that he is meditating and asked him not to disturb him. Sani, with pride, said that he cannot go without conquering him. Then Hanuman said with a humble tone that he doesn't have the ability to fight. Then Sani said in an insulting way that he is a coward and scared to fight with him. Sani started pulling Hanuman's hand.
Then Hanuman sarcastically laughed, saying that He does not understand when he was trying to give Him advice. Hanuman lengthened his tail and wrapped it around Sani's body up to his neck. Sani tried to release himself from the tightened tail of Hanuman. Hanuman meanwhile realized that he needed to perform Pradhakshinam around the bridge connecting India and Sri Lanka. Then Hanuman started to go around the bridge and hit his tail on the stones of the bridge. Even though Sani tried with all his strength to escape he could not succeed. Hanuman continued till 108 rounds, hitting the tail on the stones of Rama Setu (bridge built by Rama). By these strokes Sani's body was severly wounded and started bleeding. Then Sani prayed to Hanuman with a paniked voice, pleading with Hanuman, and agreed that Hanuman is great. Hanuman was pleased with Sani's prayers and told he will leave him if he agrees not to enter any of his devotees Zodiacs. With a moaning voice Sani agrees with the conditions. Then Hanuman released Sani from his tail. This happened on a Saturday on a Trayodasi.

Sani expressed his gratitude for his release by Hanuman from Ravana's prison at the time of Lanka Dahanam (burning of Srilanka by Hanuman). He also requested forgiveness for his misbehavior. Since then, to heal his wounds, Saturn desires abhisekam (an ointment) with sesame seed oil. Therefore for those who perform oil abhisekam to Saturn on Sani Trayodasi the radiation of Saturn will be cooled down and Sani will bless them.
