Title: Yoga Vasistha
Post by: v2birit on January 10, 2012, 08:33:39 AM
Om Sai Ram,
Some good knowledge from Yoga Vasistha. Yoga Vasistha book deals entirely on selfrealisation(Atma-Sakshatkar).
Prince Rama after returning from a pilgrimage of holy places, developed strong dispassion (Vairagya). He was not getting any interest in worldly enjoyments, like other people do. Sage Vasistha then instructed him on true knowledge (Jnana Upadesh). This knowlegde constitues the book Yoga-Vaishtha.
To give practical experience of this same knowledge, to thier devotees, is the mission of the saints. Sai baba asked Rs. 15 as daksina from Prof. Nakre, who was reading Yoga Vaishtha.
Some good Upadesh from this book...

Even if the listening to Shastras has happened. even if the intellect becomes extremely sharp
Yet the vision of the nature of the self is not understood, even uptil the end of the millenium, O Raghunatha ...42

O, so long as one does not do a bath in the dust of feet of the Sadguru
Until then, the intellect does not ever go near the nature of the self, O Rama ...43

Sai Ram Anupam ji. Yours words are really encouraging... There is a great treasure that lies hidden, & it remains hidden because of want of listeners. but when good & wise people such as you behold this treasure, then all the knowledge inside flows freely, just as milk flows from cows's udder when calf dashes against it.

It is for this reason, that without sadguru, the experience of the imperceptible (i.e. Brahma or self) is not to be had, know this.
The unreal illusion and ignorance is not broken, if there be no surrender whole heartedly ...44

The person who does not know his self-nature, because of which reason he is fortune-less
He knows the happiness of sense gratification fully, just as poisoned food is eaten eagerly ...64

One whom fortune has left, one who is ill-fortuned wretched merciless
Unto he himself, there is forgetfullness of self-nature & he has full inclination towards sense gratification for gaining happiness ...65

but those sense gratification objects are great sorrow. The fools do not know this, no matter whatever be done.
Covered with a little happiness, because of that they have longing for sense gratification always ...66

There exists happiness in sense gratification, they say, they are too foolish, O Raghupati
those who do not know the taste of milk. Just as animals cherish dried grass (straw) ...67

Chapter on Dispassion (Vairagya)

1. Bow to Shri Ganesha. Bow to Shri Saraswati. Bow to the most exalted Shri Sadguru, who is rejoicing in himself. Victory be unto Shri who is natural bliss, the supreme, the ultimate wisdom. One who is knowledge-existence-bliss, unfathomable, the best, Shri Guru

2. Victory Victory be unto the ever pure. the self illuminating, thoroughly auspicious. Victory Victory be unto the complete bliss, the brilliant, the best Shri Guru

3. Victory Victory be unto the full & perfect joy, the implicit seer, the seen and the seeing. The ocean of happiness arising out of knowledge, the consciousness of the world, the best, Shri Guru

4. Victory Victory be unto one who is known by one’s own experience. Victory Victory be unto the supreme worshipable. the one beyond everything, the one before everything, the best Shri Guru

5. Victory Victory be unto the constant self-bliss. Victory Victory be unto the one giving light. Victory Victory be unto the sun of constant bliss, the best Shri Guru

6.Victory Victory be unto the one free from three Gunas*. Victory Victory be unto one who is beyond each and everything. The one other than knower, known & knowledge, the best Shri Guru.

Gunas* - the three material modes Satva, Raja & Tama viz. goodness, passion, indolence

7.Victory Victory be unto the best of all, the one better than the twenty five tattvas*. The ultimate witness of everything, the best Shri Guru.

8. Victory Victory be unto the master of the world, the full bliss giving wish fulfilling tree. The founder of transcendental bliss, the best Shri Guru.

9. Victory Victory be unto the inconcievable, the attributeless, Existence-Knowledge-Bliss, the supreme conciousness. The all pervading, the all exclusive, the best Shri Guru.

10. Victory Victory be unto the statue of self-bliss, the formless with form. The one ever free from darkness, the Lord of the world, the best, Shri Guru.

* The Tattvas - the fundamental elements out of which the whole creation occurs, just as a particular food item is prepared out of various ingredients.
In the Samkhya doctrine there are 25 Tattvas:
1. Purusha (Transcendental Self)
2. The uncreated (unmanifest) Prakriti (primordial nature)
3. Mahat/Buddhi (intellect)
4. Ahamkara (ego, consciousness of self)
5. Manas (mind)
6-10. The five sense-organs
11-15. The five motor-organs
16-20. The five subtle elements
21-25. The five gross elements
Tattvas 3-25 evolve from primordial nature. All of the Tattvas account for the totality of the unverse as a whole, and each individual human being.

OM SAI RAM

Thanks V2biritji. What are the 5 motor organs? Kindly request you to detail a bit?
Kashmir Shaivism talks of 36 Tattwas........... bit confusing.... :)

Anupam Ji,
Trully speaking i am no expert in these matters, but from what i read, i understand that the 5 motor-organs are the Karmendriyas i.e. the organs by which we do karma. They include the organs for speaking, moving, reproduction, evacuation, action i.e. mouth, legs, sexual organ, anus, hands
We have freedom to us these Karmendriyas.
There are more than one philosophies such as the Samkhya philosophy that try to explain how the creation of universe occured. Hence the difference in the number of Tattwas. Only Sai baba knows, which one is accurate or may be all are correct in thier own perspective.

11. Like this praise of ten stanzas, know i have done in Prakrit(native)* speech, for you to get satisfied, O the best, Shri Guru.

12. Should i say, you are father, you are mother, in this there is no praise of yours. Your form is not laudable by any means, since you are the formless.

13. That is why, keeping quiet is your praise, Doing nothing, that itself is your worship. Not reflecting on you, this itself is the meditation, since you are not an object.

14. Like this is your worship. You are ungraspable for all the senses, you know. It is for this reason that there is complete self-knowership** unto you

* Prakrit - the common man's language as opposed to the perfect Sanskrit language
**self-knowership - that must be personally felt in order to be known; as pain, pleasure, one's own emotions or mental workings

15. On bowing unto you, immediately one himself becomes Brahman thoroughly. Therein who does a counting of the other mystic powers(attained).

16. Like this is your form, O Guru. Bowing unto you again and again,i am making my mind desirous for becoming one with you.

17. Hence, unto the richness of my words, give the perfection of your grace, so that it makes the glory of yours understood, by pretext of this book.

18. Listening to this convincing, Shri Guru, the wish fulfilling gem became happy & became the illuminator of my speech, by virtue of self-bliss.

19. Keeping his palm of blessings on my head, he ordered me to construct (write) the book. That very favour, i accept as greatest blessing.

20. Your beingness, that itself is God Ganesha, who does destruction of all obstacles. Your speech, that itself is the light of Sharada (Goddess Saraswati).

21. That is why by your speech everything is obtained. But when everything is obtained, you are not obtained. Hence revering unto you resembles revering unto all.

22. Just as on watering the root of a tree, all the branches and subranches get water. The branches on watering to the utmost, the root remains dry.

23. That is why, you are the all, this logic, I spoke in the very beginning. Somebody will make wrong inference, hence.

24. Hence when i bowed unto you, by that bowing must have happened unto all gods, all powers thoroughly, o kingly Shri Guru.

25. By these utterances of mine, becoming satisfied, the kingly Shri Guru, gave his blessing. He said tell (write) the book with import, very sweetly.

26. Whatever theorems, you shall speak, all that will be heard as imports of Vedas itself. Happiness will happen unto the virtuous people. That itself, you do tell.

27. Taking that greatest blessing on my head, I lovingly bow at your couple of holy feet. O O, I got the greatest blessing in the world today.

28. Now, no sooner that your pleasing happens, for perfection itself to come unto the book, therein you yourself becoming the audience, get it spoken from me.

29. Like this, I make a request this much, keep your palm of blessings on my head, by that i becoming perfectly happy, shall tell(write) the book.

30. Now, let us offer obeisances unto the saintly people who have complete ability to uplift the downtrodden. On becoming exclusively surrendered unto whom, Brahman is fully obtained.

31. For doing a narration of their worth, who holds the capability. But they (the saints) are fond of real feeling, O know, being compassionate.

32. Just as a child who knows nothing, puts a morsel of food in his father's mouth, himself making the small quantity (of morsel). The father readily spreads his mouth (for receiving the morsel)

33. Such a class of affection, knows not, the appropriate or inappropriate understanding (of the child). What the child has given, that you very lovingly accept.

34. Like that i am also a beloved of saints. They accept good as well as the ignorant. By that (virtue) itself, I shall become self-sufficient in all the three worlds.

35. It is for this reason that by broken speech, I shall tell(write) the book newly. The hearer, the speaker, the gardener of the gist of knowledge is the master, Shri Guru.

36. The book which is naturally of complete inner-self, i will speak with juicy speech. Which is the dialogue of Shri Vasishtha unto ParaBramha (Rama).

37. The ParamBramha which is ever liberated, that itself became a sportive-body, O Know. For saving the devoted people by assuming a form.

38. Although he has held an appearance with form, yet it is the changeless Bramha. Being bewildered by ignorance, changes assume the foolish people.

39. It is for this reason that for favoring the devotees, O know, is the incarnation of Shri Raghunath (Rama), entirely. He is full in bliss, full of intelligence (i.e. knowledge of consciousness), even when with form.

40. Holding a body which is too dark blue, beautiful eyes which are soft, all the limbs which are beautiful, just as faithful servants.

41. Himself without any wordly engagements, he does ridicule (deriding) of wordly business and unto the surrendered, know, he is bliss giving.

42. Although he has held a form with shape, yet the changeless Existence-Knowledge-bliss state not fading away, he portrays too beautiful a look.
