Even blessed are the Saints in whose heart Lord Vasudeo dwells, and fortunate, indeed, are the devotees who get the benefit of the company of such Saints. Two such fortunate fellows, Tatya Kote Patil and Bhagat Mhalsapati, equally shared the company of Sai Baba. Baba also loved them both equally. These three persons slept in the Masjid with their heads towards the east, west and north and with their feet touching one another at the centre. Stretching their beds, they lay on them, chitchatting and gossiping about many things, till late at midnight. If any one of them showed any signs of sleep, others would wake him up. For instance, if Tatya began to snore, Baba at once got up and shook him from side to side and pressed his head. If it was Mhalsapati, He hugged him close, stroked his legs and kneaded his back. In this way for full 14 years, Tatya, leaving his parents at home, slept in the Masjid on account of his love for Baba. How happy and never to be forgotten were those days! How to measure that love and how to value the grace of Baba? After the passing away of his father, Tatya took charge of the household affairs and began to sleep at home.

with a bow with all our eight limbs to Sai Baba, Who is an ocean of mercy, the God incarnate, who is Para-Brahman and the great Yogeshwara (Lord of Yoga). Victory be unto Sai Baba, Who is the crest-jewel of the Saints, who is the home of all auspicious things, who is our Atmaram (Dear Self), and who is the able refuge of the devotees. We prostrate ourselves before Him, Who has attained the aim and end of life.

Sai Baba is always full of mercy. What is wanted on our part is whole-hearted devotion to Him. When a devotee has got firm faith and devotion, his wishes are soon fulfilled.

Whenever, a devotee had complete and whole-hearted devotion to Sai Baba, all his calamities and dangers were warded off and his welfare attended to by Baba.

This Damu Anna had three wives. According to his statement mentioned above, he had not three but two wives only. He had no issue. He consulted many astrologers and himself studied astrology to some extent and found that as there was a 'papi' (inauspicious) planet in his horoscope, there was no prospect of any issue to him in this life. But he had great faith in Baba. When he went to Shirdi, two hours after the receipt of the mango parcel, for worshipping Baba, He said, "Though other people are looking for the mangoes, they are Dammya's. He whose they are, should 'eat and die'." Damu Anna on hearing these words was first shocked, but on Mhalsapati (a prominent Shirdi devotees) explaining to him that death meant the death of the little self or egos, and to have it at Baba's Feet was a blessing, he said that he would accept the fruits and eat them. But Baba said to him. "Do not eat yourself, but give them to your junior wife. This Amra-Leela (mango miracle of 4 mangoes) will give her four sons and four daughters. This was done and ultimately in due course it was found Baba's words turned out true and not those of the astrologers.

Baba's speech established its efficacy or greatness while He was living in the flesh, but wonder of wonders! It did the same even after His passing away. Baba said - "Believe Me, though I pass away, My bones in My tomb will give you hope and confidence. Not only Myself but My tomb would be speaking, moving and communicating with those who would surrender themselves whole-heartedly to Me. Do not be anxious that I would be absent from you. You will hear My bones speaking and discussing your welfare. But remember Me always, believe in Me heart and soul and then you will be most benefited

Prayer

Hemadpant closes this Chapter with a prayer. "Oh Sai Sad-guru, the wish fulfilling tree of the Bhaktas, Let us never forget and lose sight of Your Feet; we have been troubled with the ins and outs (births and deaths) in this samsar; now free us from this cycle of births and deaths. Restrain us from the outgoing of our senses to their objects and introvert us and bring us face to face with the Atma (Self). As long as this outgoing tendency of the senses and the mind is not checked, there is no prospect of self-realisation. Neither son, nor wife nor friend will be of any use in the end. It is only You, Who will give us salvation and happiness. Destroy completely our tendency for discussions and other evil matters, let out tongue get a passion for chanting Your name. Drive out our thoughts, good or otherwise and make us forget our bodies and houses, and do away with our egoism. Make us ever remember Your name and forget all other things. Remove the restlessness of our mind, and make it steady and calm. If you just clasp us, the darkness of night of our ignorance will vanish and we shall live happily in Your light. That You made us drink the nectar of Your Leelas and awakened us from our slumber is due to Your grace and our store of merits in past births".

श्री अक्कलकोटकर महाराज के एक भक्त, जिनका नाम भाई कृष्ण जी अलीबागकर था, उनके चित्र का नित्य-प्रति पूजन किया करते थे । एक समय उन्होंने अक्कलकोटकर (शोलापुर जिला) जाकर महाराज की पादुकाओं का दर्शन एवं पूजन करने का निश्चय किया । परन्तु प्रस्थान करने के पूर्व अक्कलकोटकर महाराज ने स्वपन में दर्शन देकर उनसे कहा कि आजकल शिरडी ही मेरा विश्राम-स्थल है और तुम वहीं जाकर मेरा पूजन करो । इसलिये भाई ने अपने कार्यक्रम में परिवर्तन कर शिरडी आकर श्री साईबाबा की पूजा की । वे आनन्दपूर्वक शिरडी में छः मास रहे और इस स्वप्न की स्मृति-स्वरुप उन्होंने पादुकायें बनवाई । शके सं. 1834 में श्रावण में शुभ दिन देखकर नीम वृक्ष के नीचे वे पादुकायें स्थापित कर दी गई । दादा केलकर तथा उपासनी महाराज ने उनका यथाविधि स्थापना-उत्सव सम्पन्न किया । एक दीक्षित ब्राहृमण पूजन के लिये नियुक्त कर दिया गया और प्रबन्ध का कार्य एक भक्त सगुण मेरु नायक को सौंप गया ।

सदा निंबवृक्षस्य मूलाधिवासात्

सुधास्त्राविणं तित्तमप्यप्रियं तम् ।

तरुं कल्पवृक्षाधिकं साधयन्तं

नमानीश्वरं सद्गगुरुं साईनाथम् ।।


अर्थात् मैं भगवान साईनाथ को नमन करता हूँ, जिनका सानिध्य पाकर नीम वृक्ष कटु तथा अप्रिय होते हुए भी अमृत वर्षा करता था । (इस वृक्ष का रस अमृत कहलाता है) इसमें अनेक व्याधियों से मुक्ति देने के गुण होने के कारण इसे कल्पवृक्ष से भी श्रेष्ठ कहा गया है ।

बाबा को प्रकाश से बड़ा अनुराग था । वे संध्या समय दुकानदारों से भिक्षा में तेल मागँ लेते थे तथा दीपमालाओं से मसजिद को सजाकर, रात्रिभर दीपक जलाया करते थे । यह क्रम कुछ दिनों तक ठीक इसी प्रकार चलता रहा । अब बलिये तंग आ गये और उन्होंने संगठित होकर निश्चय किया कि आज कोई उन्हें तेल की भिक्षा न दे । नित्य नियमानुसार जब बाबा तेल माँगने पहुँचें तो प्रत्येक स्थान पर उनका नकारात्मक उत्तर से स्वागत हुआ । किसी से कुछ कहे बिना बाबा मसजिद को लौट आये और सूखी बत्तियाँ दियों में डाल दीं। बनिये तो बड़े उत्सुक होकर उनपर दृष्टि जमाये हुये थे । बाबा ने टमरेल उठाया, जिसमें बिलकुल थोड़ा सा तेल था । उन्होंने उसमें पानी मिलाया और वह तेल-मिश्रित जल वे पी गये । उन्होंने उसे पुनः टीनपाट में उगल दिया और वही तेलिया पानी दियों में डालकर उन्हें जला दिया । उत्सुक बिनयों ने जब दीपकों को पूर्ववत् रात्रि भर जलते देखा, तब उन्हें अपने कृत्य पर बड़ा दुःख हुआ और उन्होंने बाबा से क्षमा-याचना की । बाबा ने उन्हें क्षमा कर भविष्य में सत्य व्यवहार रखने के लिये सावधान किया ।

जब सद्गगुरु ही नाव के खिवैया हों तो वे निश्चय ही कुशलता तथा सरलतापूर्वक इस भवसागर के पार उतार देंगे । सद्गगुरु शब्द का उच्चारण करते ही मुझे श्री साई की स्मृति आ रही है । ऐसा प्रतीत होता है, मानो वो स्वयं मेरे सामने ही खड़े है और मेरे मस्तक पर उदी लगा रहे हैं । देखो, देखो, वे अब अपनग वरद्-हस्त उठाकर मेरे मस्तक पर रख रहे है । अब मेरा हृदय आनन्द से भर गया है । मेरे नेत्रों से प्रेमाश्रु बह रहे है । सद्गगुरु के कर-स्पर्श की शक्ति महान् आश्चर्यजनक है । लिंग (सूक्ष्म) शरीर, जो संसार को भष्म करने वाली अग्नि से भी नष्ट किया जा सकता है, वह केवल गुरु के कर-स्पर्श से ही पल भर में नष्ट हो जाता है । अनेक जन्मों के समस्त पाप भी मन स्थिर हो जाते है । श्री साईबाबा के मनोहर रुप के दर्शन कर कंठ प्रफुल्लता से रुँध जाता है, आँखों से अश्रुधारा प्रवाहित होने लगती है और जब हृदय भावनाओं से भर जाता है, तब सोडहं भाव की जागृति होकर आत्मानुभव के आननन्द का आभास होने लगता है । मैं और तू का भेद (दैृतभाव) नष्ट हो जाता है और तत्क्षण ही ब्रहृा के साथ अभिन्नता प्राप्त हो जाती है । जब मैं धार्मिक ग्रन्थों का पठन करता हूँ तो क्षण-क्षण में सद्गगुरु की स्मृति हो आती है । बाबा राम या कृष्ण का रुप धारण कर मेरे सामने खड़े हो जाते है और स्वयं अपनी जीवन-कथा मुझे सुनाने लगते है  ।

भक्तों के कल्याणार्थ श्री साईबाबा ने स्वयं जिन वचनों से आश्वासन दिया था, उनको नीचे उदृत किया जाता है –

मेरे भक्तों के घर अन्न तथा वस्त्रों का कभी अभाव नहीं होगा । यह मेरा वैशिष्टय है कि जो भक्त मेरी शरण आ जाते है ओर अंतःकरण से मेरे उपासक है, उलके कल्याणार्थ मैं सदैव चिंतित रहता हूँ । कृष्ण भगवान ने भी गीता में यही समझाया है । इसलिये भोजन तथा वस्त्र के लिये अधिक चिंता न करो । यदि कुछ मांगने की ही अभिलाषा है तो ईश्वर को ही भिक्षा में माँगो । सासारिक मान व उपाधियाँ त्यागकर ईश-कृपा तथा अभयदान प्राप्त करो और उन्ही के दृारा सम्मानित होओ । सांसारिक विभूतियों से कुपथगामी मत बनो । अपने इष्ट को दृढ़ता से पकड़े रहो । समस्त इन्द्रियों और मन को ईश्वरचिंतन में प्रवृत रखो । किसी पदार्थ से आकर्षित न हो, सदैव मेरे स्मरण में मन को लगाये रखो, ताकि वह देह, सम्पत्ति व ऐश्वर्य की ओर प्रवृत न हो । तब चित्त स्थिर, शांत व निर्भय हो जायगा । इस प्रकार की मनःस्थिति प्राप्त होना इस बात का प्रतीक है कि वह सुसंगति में है । यदि चित्त की चंचलता नष्ट न हुई तो उसे एकाग्र नहीं किया जा सकता ।

On several occasions, Baba said out of love for His devotees - "What (whether good or bad) is ours, is with us, and what is another’s is with him." - Ch. XLV, Shri Sai Satcharitra.


 "Do your duty, do not be afraid in the least, steady your mind and Have Faith in my words" said Baba to Hemadpant.
