  • BAYAJABAI – PERSONIFICATION OF LOVE

While this may seem a very inconsequential leela of Baba, a careful examination will reveal a great deal about the underlying principles of Baba's teachings. Baba said once, "My deeds are unfathomable." We should try to understand the unfathomable deeds of Baba in the light of his teachings. This attempt on our part is also a part of our endeavour along the path. But to try to seek justification for the deeds of Sri Sai Baba in astrology or the science of Vaastu is foolish.

Bayajabai and her group were all packed and ready to go to Pandaripur. Baba called her and asked her to postpone the trip. She did that without a second thought. This shows her infinite trust and devotion for Baba. This is the type of total surrender to his will that Baba has tried to teach us through his sayings, deeds and leelas. That is what we have to inculcate in ourselves and achieve as devotees of Sri Sai Baba. Shama wanted to see why Baba had suddenly cancelled the trip of Bayajabai. So he searched the calendar and thought he found the explanation, that it was an inauspicious day for travel.

There is a danger that some devotees may take Shama's words as an indication that Baba approved the use of astrological tables, calendars and charts. They may feel that Baba encouraged the devotees to see good days for travel and other such traditional superstitions. A little thought will reveal that this feeling is baseless. If the reason why Baba asked Bayajabai to postpone the trip was that the day was inauspicious, why would Baba give them udi and his blessings for departure a bare half hour previously? Would Baba not know that it is not an auspicious day for travel before he gave them the udi? Perhaps Baba had foreknowledge that his action would be misinterpreted to mean that astrology and such stupid superstitions had his imprimatur.

That is why he had forbidden Bayajabai, "Do not consult anyone in this matter." This means that Baba, indirectly, and in his inimitable style, had indicated his disapproval of the consultation of astrological calendars and charts and the following of the other superstitious practices.

    Sai Ram!

Please clear me a doubt. Who ever catches baba feet should never bother about astrological disorders rite?

Baba will take care of everything.rite?

Why I am asking this is my kid is 2.6 yrs old. She has "JanamaShani" and she has serious suffering in her health from the time of her birth. some astrolgers predicted that this will continue till she is 5 yrs old ie till 2009.
But by baba's grace when she entered into 3rd year her health was improved better.
Iam doing everything they say and performing many poojs for her. On the other Part i truely belive in baba and i have full faith in him.
so i dont like to visit astrologers. becos when baba is with me then y should i run here and there? But according to some conditions it happened to visit them. It's not like i dont believe in astrology or i dont like astrologers. But i think who ever believes in baba, dont have a need to consult others.

Am I correct. I am having this doubt from past 1 month and trying to find out. but today your post gave me the answer. I think baba gave the advice for me through You.

Pls suggest me in this issue. What can i do better.

  • BAYAJABAI – PERSONIFICATION OF LOVE

    OM SRI SAI RAM !

To think as Tatya did, that Baba had told them to postpone the trip due to his foreknowledge of the cholera epidemic striking Pandaripur, does not fit the facts. If this were the reason, Baba, as he did on many occasions with many devotees, would have told them to cancel the trip altogether. Also, if this were indeed the reason, why had Baba not placed any obstacles to the departure of Radhakrishna Ayi's party which left for Pandaripur earlier, as he did to Bayajabai's group? So why did Baba do this leela? Only Baba knows the meaning of his leelas. As the arati says, "Agaadha tavaa karani" (your acts are unfathomable); Baba's acts are beyond the grasp of mere mortals.

Bayajabai occupies a prominent place amongst the devotees of Sri Sai Baba, in the history of Baba. After serving Baba with sisterly love, Bayajabai breathed her last in 1914. Her husband, Ganapati Kote, had also died a few years earlier. It is natural for the devotees of Baba to be eager to visit the house of Bayajabai where Baba had begged food for sixty years. Bayajabai's family was staying first in a street east of the Chavadi near the present location of Ichhiraj Hotel. They later sold that house and built a new one behind the (present) Pilgrims Hotel near the Mahalakshmi Temple. Now that house has been converted to a hotel and is called the Bayajabai Guest House. Baba would beg for food in both these houses.

  • OM SRI SAI RAM

My children, do not identify Me with this body of soil. The entire universe is My body. Sai is present in all flora and fauna, in the sky and on earth. He dwells everywhere. He speaks, eats, drinks and walks through all living bodies on the earth. He works through all hands. This is the mystery of My Sai-hood. The Sarkar in Dwarkamai is full of sport. My Fakir is playing through all souls. --SAIBABA

    TATYA - SWEET UNFORGETABLE MEMORIES

When one dozes in the presence of God!

"Baba used to make fun of me. Sometimes. when I was fast asleep he would take me out of the mosque and hide himself. When I woke up and started crying out and asking who it was who had thrown me out, he would come out mischievously smiling at me.

During the hot summer days it was sweltering hot specially near the dhuni. When I overslept near the dhuni,.  Baba, ever on the lookout to tease me, used to cover me with a blanket, stealthily getting up late in the night . Sweating badly, I would wake up, unable to bear the sultriness and sit on the steps of mosque. Baba, pretending to be anxious, would shout for me loudly and when I come out into his view he would say with a sigh, “Thank heavens! So you are here.”

Many a time when I was asleep he would press my head hard and would move my legs somewhere else and put me back to sleep.

    Nursing or Cursing!!

The author of Sri Sai Sacharitra wrote that Baba and Mahalsapati used to massage Tatya’s head and limbs as he went into deep sleep. Sri Tatya elaborated on this as follows.

“Baba is aware that I work in the fields during the entire day and that  as a result, my body suffers pains. So he and Mahalsapati used to massage my body and limbs, and that would worry me a lot. One fine day I firmly told Baba, as well as Mahalsapati, that it was not proper on their part to do so. How come I should receive their service, instead of being of service to them?

Baba completely ignored my sentiments and furthermore told me, “It is perfectly all right, we are both the same. People think I am great but it is not so. I am just like you!” However, I threatened that I would never come to the mosque again should Baba repeat such acts. And I did not just threaten, I did so! Once I stubbornly avoided going anywhere near the mosque for ten or twelve days which made Baba very upset. He called out to me loudly should I pass that way, even at a far distance, but I would gesticulate to him from afar that there is no connection between him and me, and move away. Then Kaka Dixit came on a visit to Shirdi and learnt that I was not going to the mosque any longer. He called me up and persuaded me that I must go as usual as I was the son of Bayajamami and Baba loved me very much.

Mahalsapati used to get sick quite frequently for a period of three to four years. During such times Baba would not allow him to sleep at the mosque and would send him home. As for me, I slept in the mosque for fourteen or fifteen years along with Baba, but I discontinued sleeping there five or six years prior to his mahasamadhi (passing away).
After staying for two to three years in the mosque, Baba changed his residence to the area of dense vegetation between the Lendi and Sira rivulets. He stayed there for two and a half years. During this period, one of his devotees would take him food every day. Raghu Patil, and four or five other kids and myself visited him there during this period, but by then we had given up our juvenile pranks. Sri Nanasaheb Dengle and other devotees also came for Baba’s darshan in those days.
A mahatma called Gangagir Bua organized a nama saptaha (chanting of God’s name continuously for seven days and nights) in Shirdi in 1896. Only a few villagers took part, and this lack of interest provoked Gangagir Bua, he went angrily to the mosque and indicating Baba to the villagers, said, “This is a diamond. And now this diamond is lying on this dung-heap of a village. Heed my words all of you! He will change the very shape of Shirdi.” Gangagir stalked away angrily and left Shirdi. I followed him to Rui village and had his darshan. I begged forgiveness on behalf of all the villagers of Shirdi and asked him to organize the nama saptaha once again. At first he did not agree. I then followed him to many places and took part in the nama saptahas with him and he eventually softened and came to Shirdi for the Dasara Festival. I think I was 17 or 18 at that time. When I told Baba about my attending the nama saptahas he was very happy about it. From then onwards I started going to the mosque quite often. Baba loved me as his own child and never let me go anywhere without his permission.”

  • TATYA - SWEET UNFORGETABLE MEMORIES

Initially only Mahalsapati used to sleep in the mosque with Baba, but once Tatya became intimate with Baba he also began sleeping there every day and when Baba started spending alternate nights in Chavadi, Tatya slept in the mosque whenever Baba was there. But Baba never permitted anyone other than Mahalsapati and Tatya to sleep in the mosque. In his Sri Sai Satcharitra Hemadpant describes the way these three slept in the mosque like this.
“Vasudeva (Vishnu) always lives in the hearts of mahatmas. Those devotees who have the good fortune of staying in the close vicinity of such mahatmas are blessed. Tatya and Mahalsapati are two such blessed souls who slept with Baba in the mosque. How great is their merit that they had such enormous good fortune, for Baba had the greatest of liking for them both and loved them equally. These three would keep their heads to the east, west and north and sleep with their feet touching each other. They lay down and kept talking to each other till the late hours of the night. If anyone dozed off the other two would shake him awake. If Tatya fell asleep and started snoring, Baba and Mahalsapati would shake him, push him about and wake him by pressing hard his head, legs or back. Tatya slept with Baba for fourteen years in this manner, leaving his parents at home. How can we measure the love Tatya had for Baba? In the same way can anyone put a value on the love Baba had for Tatya? Those sweet days were unforgettable. Even though those days have gone, the sweet memories of them linger on. When Tatya’s father passed away, the responsibility of the house fell on Tatya and from that time on he slept at home.”
Baba’s love and kindness will always fall copiously like a gentle rain on devotees such as Tatya and Mahalsapati. Their reminiscences give us all a great experience of Baba’s love. Baba regarded and honoured Bayajabai as more than his own sister. Tatya, Bayajabai’s son had called Baba, “mama” (maternal uncle) since his childhood. In truth, theirs was a relationship akin to uncle and nephew. Baba, who normally had a serious mien and was always immersed in his thoughts, would however, behave very informally and lovingly joke and laugh with Tatya.

Let us see how Tatya himself describes their relationship. “Baba would sometimes join hands with me and whirl around with me playing games. He would sometimes wrestle with me. I used to suddenly lift him up and placing him either on my shoulders or back would run about with him. He would worry that I may strain my back by carrying him and would anxiously advise me not to do so, and laugh heartily. He used to call me Tatya or Kotya or sometimes the “horse-faced one. “
Once Baba and I were standing at the shop of Nandu Marwadi. That was the day of the Holi Festival. Baba was in high spirits because of the festival. I too was feeling elated and suddenly picked up Baba and started walking towards the mosque. Baba was shouting all along the way, “Hey, Kotya! Stop! Put me down or your stomach muscles will cramp and you will suffer.” I paid no attention to his shouting and carried him safely to the mosque. I did this sort of thing once or twice on later occasions also. Later I stopped, fearing that Baba’s body may feel pain by my rough handling.
“Baba would sometimes tease me by hiding my upper cloth either behind the bag of wheat kept in the mosque, or some other place. He would then sit in the mosque as if he was innocent. When I asked him where my cloth was, his reply was always the same “What do I know about your cloth, do I look as if I would steal other’s clothes?” I would say, “You must have hidden my cloth somewhere.” Baba would also join me in searching for my cloth and show a lot of concern that it was lost. He would then bring it out from where he had hidden it, pretending that he had just found it.
Sometimes he would slink in from behind and cover my eyes with his hands. When I asked who it was, he would run and hide behind the pillar and play hide and seek with me.

“I would purchase whatever Baba needed from the market. Once Baba gave me four rupees and asked me to get betel leaves, ber fruit (zizyphus jujuba) and some other stuff. I went to the market at Rahata Village and brought all the items Baba wanted. I went back to the mosque and keeping them all in front of Baba said, “Baba, see how good these ber fruit are. I selected them for you specially from the market.”
Baba, however, did not touch even one of the ber fruit which I had selected with such care for him, and gave them all to Mahalsapati and me to eat. “I was hurt and I refused to eat the fruit unless Baba ate a few too. Baba said that he did not care to eat fruit at that particular time and insisted that I eat them. I too was adamant. This argument batted to and fro for a long time without either of us giving in an inch. Finally, I wrapped the fruit in my kerchief and went away. “That night I brought the fruit again to Baba along with the usual roti and begged him to eat them. Baba adamantly said that I should eat them first. The same argument started again between us. Finally, loosing my temper, I flung the fruit in the forecourt of the mosque and stalked away to see the tamasha (street play) being performed in the village.
“At other times Baba would put my fingers between his fingers and press them. When I did the same to him he would act as if he was in great pain and shout that I had broken his fingers. “Sometimes he would ask me to show my strength and taking my hand into his would press it hard. When I did the same to him he would writhe and complain as if he was in great pain and his hand was broken.

“Sometimes I removed Baba’s headscarf and made him wear mine in the shindi shahi manner of the Maratha landlord. I would also put a cloth around his neck and bring him a mirror. Joining in the fun, he would peer at himself in the mirror and imitating my way of talking, walking and various expressions, would roll his eyes and say, “Oh Mirror, please tell me if this Kotya looks like me and acts like me? Do tell!” He would then return all the clothes and mirror to me.
“After I left the mosque, Baba and Mahalsapati picked up all the fruit I had flung away in my temper. Baba sent word to me via Mahalsapati to come to the mosque. I went back eagerly in the hope that Baba had become more pliant and would eat the fruit. But I was disappointed to see that he was as adamant as ever. I again went away angrily to see the tamasha. Baba again sent Daggu and Kondya to convince me somehow or other to come back to the mosque. I refused to go.
After a while Mahalsapati came again and said that Baba was waiting anxiously for me to come back. I was not willing to go, but in the end, I was persuaded. Baba touched some fruit to his lips and gave them all to Mahalsapati. “Bhagat, you eat some of these. Give the rest to him and ask him to eat,” said Baba. My ego was satisfied and my anger lessened. Baba did not talk to me the whole night long. He himself had sent for the fruit from the market. Why then did he not eat them is a secret only he knows.”

  • TATYA - SWEET UNFORGETABLE MEMORIES

Baba’s acts are deep and beyond the comprehension of mere mortals such as us. If any other devotee were in the place of Tatya, he would have thought, “Why did Baba refuse the fruit? Anyway it is a leela only Baba can fathom,” and he would have humbly and gratefully accepted the fruit from Baba. From the Dixit Diaries
Baba’s Equal Treatment of All Beings Once when Baba was eating his food in the mosque along with the other devotees, a dog entered and ate some of the curd. Bade Baba, the fakir of Malegaon saw this, and considering the curd to have been polluted by the dog, told a boy nearby to drive the dog away. The boy left his food and stood up to do it. Noticing this Baba noticed asked, “What is the matter?” Bade Baba told him that the curd was polluted by the dog. Baba said, “Oh brother, that curd was very tasty (showing that he had tasted the curd in the form of the dog, and his identification with the dog). Take the curd home, make kadi and bring it for the next meal. I’ll eat it.” Bade Baba took the curd away and prepared kudi and brought it to the mosque. Baba ate it with relish.
The intimacy between Tatya and Baba became the cause of Tatya’s temper and adamant attitude towards Baba. Baba did not explain to Tatya why he did not eat the fruit. Maybe Tatya would not have understood the reason even if Baba had explained. So Baba himself, who was totally without ego and was the very embodiment of kindness, conceded to Tatya by touching the fruit first to his lips and then giving them to him to eat as a compromise.

  • TATYA - SWEET UNFORGETABLE MEMORIES

Sometimes Baba would buy groceries and other ingredients from the market and cook a meal himself. He would normally prepare either mutton pulao or sweet porridge or rice boiled with lentils. He would never use a ladle while cooking. He would put his hand into the boiling cauldron to mix the food while it was cooking. His hand would not be burned by this feat. After the food was ready Baba would have it offered to God by the Muslim cleric and then send some to the houses of Mahalsapati and Tatya. The remaining food was given to the devotees who assembled there. Once some devotees gave two cows to Baba as a present. Baba gave them away to Tatya and Sagun Meru Naik.
The number of devotees visiting Baba gradually started to increase from 1900. Approximately 150 to 200 people could be fed daily on the food offerings made to Baba by the devotees. Baba would, however, mix the alms he got with a little of the food offerings, and have his lunch with ten to twelve devotees.
Tatya and some other devotees would eat in the mosque every day. The fakir of Malegaon, Bade Baba, would sit on Baba’s right while Tatya Patil would sit on his left. Baba and Bade Baba would eat from the same plate while Tatya, Ramachandra Patil and Bayyaji Patil would together eat from another plate.
