Title: Interesting Experiences

Sapatnekar’s family piligrimage

OM SAI RAM

It is interesting to see how Baba has made these details available to us through the agency of a devotee. Lieutenant Colonel M B Nimbalkar (retired) is a Sai devotee who lives in Pune. He learnt through his friends that the Sapatnekar family, whose account was given in Chapter 48 of Sri Sai Satcharita, was also living in Pune. He got their address from the phone directory and met them on 13.9.1983. First he met Sri Dinakar, Sapatnekar’s third son. From him he learnt that the eldest son, Muralidhar, who was born by Baba’s grace and blessings, was also living in Pune and that by the most happy coincidence, their mother was living with him. Nimbalkar was very happy to hear this as he had not imagined that Mrs. Sapatnekar would still be alive some 65 years after Baba entered samadhi. He was ecstatic that, by Baba’s grace, he was able to meet someone who had seen Baba physically and received his blessings. He looked upon this opportunity as a gift from Baba.

Mrs. Parvatibai Sapatnekar was 88 years old at the time Nimbalkar met her. She answered all his questions without any lapses of memory. This is her account of her experiences with Baba.

Mrs.Parvathibai Sapatnekar :

“I was married when I was thirteen. My husband, Sri Mahadev Waman Sapatnekar, was thirty-three years old at the time of our marriage and I was his second wife. His first wife and their only son had both passed away due to a disease of the throat. My in-laws were staying at Madhegaon at that time. However, my husband was practising law at Akkalkot, the district headquarters. My husband was very sad that his only son had died and was always unhappily thinking about him. To add to his woes, I was childless for about four to five years after getting married, so he would always be moping about with a gloomy countenance. My father-in-law then told him to visit Sri Sai Baba of Shirdi as many people had gone there and found peace.

We had heard of Baba many times from Sri Shevade, who was my husband’s friend and classmate. My husband, however, had no belief in Baba and was unwilling to go to Shirdi for his darshan. As he could not disobey his father he went to Shirdi in 1913, taking his brother Panditharao along with him. He left me in my mother-in-law’s place at Madhegaon before leaving for Shirdi. I had been very eager to have Baba’s darshan for a long time, but in those days, even to stand in front of the husband was a great departure from tradition. To talk to him and tell him what I wanted was out of the question, so I could not tell him of my desire to go to Shirdi for Baba’s darshan.

OM SAI RAM

While my husband was in Shirdi, Panditharao's wife and I were sleeping in the same room. I had a divine dream. A great light flashed in front of me. I suddenly remembered that there was no water in the house and left for the Lakadshah well with a pot to get water. In those days daughters-in-law were forbidden to go anywhere unattended, so I was hurrying so that I could get the water before my father-in-law returned from court. As I neared the well, I saw a fakir standing nearby. He had a piece of cloth tied around his head and was wearing a kufni (a long shirt-like garment coming down to mid-calf). He drew near and said, “Woman! Why do you trouble yourself like this? I will fill your pot with clean water.” I was scared that he might think of doing me harm. In the meanwhile, flouting all sense of decency, he lifted his kufni and squatted to urinate right in front of me. My apprehension of his mischievous intentions deepened and I thought that he might try to molest me, so I ran towards our house.

He followed me repeating, “Do not run away, oh woman! You will repent later. I have come here to give you one thing.” I reached home fast and slammed home the bolts and locked all the doors. He was still standing outside the house and throwing pebbles through the small window, which was open. “I want to give you one thing, oh woman,” he kept saying. I did not know what to do and tried to scream for help. My dream vanished and I was awake. I woke up Panditharao’s wife and asked her the time. She got up and asked me if I was unable to sleep.

DEAR SAI BLESSED DEVOTEES! OM SRI SAI RAM !

(Mrs. Parvathibai Sapatnekar continued to say the following)
I was telling my mother-in-law of my dream the following morning, when my father-in-law overheard from the next room. He walked in and wanted to know all the details. After hearing me patiently to the end he said that it must have been Sai Baba who came to me in my dream. He said that it was very auspicious that Baba had come and that it boded well for our family. While this was going on, my husband returned from Shirdi and told us the details of his trip.
It seems my husband went to the mosque and approached Baba to touch his feet and salute him. As he bent down to touch Baba’s feet, Baba suddenly shouted, “Chal hut!” (Go away!) and pushed him away so hard that my husband’s headdress fell a long way. My husband was woebegone and came out of the mosque. He stayed for two more days and tried to have Baba’s darshan with the help of the other devotees present there, but whenever Baba saw my husband, he would shout “Chal hut!” again and would not even let him draw near. Disheartened, my husband realised that Baba’s darshan and blessings were impossible, and returned to Madhegaon full of despair. He blamed his father for causing him this anguish as he had sent him to Shirdi on this fruitless venture.
The next day my father-in-law told my husband of my dream and urged him to go to Shirdi again and to take me along this time. My husband prevaricated saying that it was because I had the desire to go to Shirdi and had gone to sleep with that desire uppermost in my thoughts that that this dream had come and too much should not be read in to it. But my father-in-law was firm, “If Sri Sai Baba was angry with you there must have been some failing of yours. You should take this dream as a good augury and go to Shirdi with her. It is certain that Baba will do you good.” He ordered, “Take along your elder sister-in-law too as she has only girls and no male progeny yet.” My husband could not disobey his father and so we all left for Shirdi.  to be continued.........

Continuation....

When we reached Shirdi Baba was just returning from Lendi Gardens. I was wonderstruck to see that it was the same fakir who had appeared in my dream. Immediately on seeing me, Baba held his stomach and bending and twisting as if in severe pain said, “Oh, my stomach, and my back; the pain, it is unbearable.” I was worried for Baba and anxiously inquired of the devotees nearby what had happened to him. They told me not to worry as it was a frequent practice of Baba to take the pains of his devotees and act thus. They said that Baba took the pains and diseases of his devotees on to himself to give them relief and the devotees would become free of them as a result.

I was surprised and also laughed a little at Baba for his dramatic performance in showing the pain. Ingrate that I was, I did not realise at that time that Baba in his mercy had done it all for my sake. I had been suffering from severe pain in my back and stomach for a long time and I realised only two or three months after Baba’s darshan that these pains had vanished from the moment Baba had acted out his charade. I was deeply moved that Baba had taken my debilitating pain on himself, experienced it, and given me relief. I thanked him sincerely from the bottom of my heart and repented for having laughed at his pantomime at the time."

That day, we took fruit, flowers and other gifts, and went for Baba’s darshan after he was seated in the mosque. My husband led the way and I followed him. The moment Baba saw my husband, he again shouted “Chal hut” as before. My husband felt hurt and sadly left the mosque. It was then my turn. I went forward and, putting my head on Baba’s feet, saluted him. Baba took a handful of udi and put it all on my head. “Take! One, two, three, four!” said Baba, “Take as many as you want.” I was immersed in bliss and forgot myself totally. My husband, however, was sunk in the depths of despair. All those who came to Shirdi were most joyfully having the darshan of Baba. They were happily carrying away Baba’s blessings and going home in eager anticipation of good things to come. And here he was – the only blessing he got from Baba was a “Chal hut!”

Dear Kavitaparna,

We are trying for a baby since my miscarriage early this year. I was feeling low today and losing faith in Baba. Then I thought of visiting this forum. The first thing I did was to check "Your experience with Sai Baba" and to my surprise, I saw your posts.

I think Baba was telling me that he will bless us with a child, the same way he bless Sapatnekar.

Please post the entire story.

Thanks again, you have made my day and have re-installed my faith in Baba.

OM SRI SAI RAM

My husband gave this serious thought. He realised that Baba’s intransigent attitude was indeed a reflection of his own lack of faith in Baba. He remembered that when he and Shevade were studying law, Shevade had told him of Baba’s power and the miracles wrought by Baba. He had then talked ill of Baba as if he was a charlatan, and had laughed at Baba and Shevade. He now sincerely repented of his behaviour and wanted to make amends. He resolved that he would not leave Shirdi without obtaining Baba’s blessings and kind grace. He got his chance a few days later. One afternoon my husband noticed that Baba was sitting alone in the mosque. He at once ran to Baba and, clasping his feet, started weeping piteously. He told Baba that he had been blind to Baba's greatness earlier and earnestly begged Baba to forgive his previous transgressions and shower his grace on him. Baba's heart melted and placing his hand on my husband's head, he blessed him and bade him sit near Him.

Meanwhile a shepherdess had walked in and sat massaging Baba's feet. Baba in his usual manner, started telling her a story. As my husband listened to the story, he was dumbfounded to realise that it was all about him. He was awed by Baba's omniscience. Pointing to my husband Baba said to the shepherdess, "This man accuses me of killing his son. Do I kill people's children? Why does he come here and start weeping? I will put the same child in the womb of his wife. Tell him to go now." My husband was ecstatic with happiness. He saluted Baba repeatedly, thanking him for showering us with his grace, and returned from the mosque."

Continuation....

He recounted to me all that had happened in the mosque with Baba. He said that Baba was an ocean of kindness and a realised soul. He told me to get ready for the arati with puran polies (chapatis with a sweet filling) as an offering for Baba. However, one of the priests there told us that halva would make a better offering, so we prepared some halva and took it on a plate to the mosque. After the arati, the offerings to Baba were put in front of him. Even though our plate was slightly far away, Baba bent down, and taking a handful of halva, ate it with relish. Our happiness knew no bounds. We offered our heartfelt thanks to Baba for the kindness he showed us."

The next day was a Thursday and we attended the Chavadi Festival. The glory of that festival cannot be explained in words - it has to be experienced to be known in its totality. It was a beautiful sight. The festival procession was led by devotees with various musical instruments, such as drums, cymbals and gongs. The decorated silver palanquin came next, and lastly Baba, accompanied by his devotees. One devotee held Baba's ceremonial umbrella, others held the ceremonial whisks and waved them as is done to royalty. We were told that Baba never sat in the palanquin, although sometimes the devotees lifted him forcibly and placed him in it. But the next second he would vanish and reappear on the ground, to the amazement of all the devotees present. When the devotees danced in joy, immersed in devotion to Baba, Baba would also dance, immersed in the joy of devotion.

It was wonderful, the way Baba danced. He would rhythmically place now a foot forward, now a foot back, all in tune with the pulsating drums and the clashing cymbals. It was the dance of a master of the art. I can still see Baba's dance in my mind's eye. Baba's awesome glory and his effulgence was a thing to be seen and experienced during the Chavadi festival. Words could never do justice to explaining the festival or its glory. I was surprised to see the same divine aura around Baba that I saw around Panduranga in Pandaripur."

We decided to leave for Madhegaon the next day. When we were setting out for the mosque to get Baba's permission to leave, my husband said, "I have decided to give one rupee as dakshina (gift given to a holy person or God) to Baba. If he asks for more I will give him another rupee. I would like to give him more but we don't have any more money on us. So we might have to sell my ring and your bangles to raise the money for dakshina."

We went to the mosque, saluted Baba with devotion in our hearts, and asked him for permission to leave for home. Baba assented and asked for dakshina. My husband offered the rupee to Baba. Again Baba asked him for more dakshina and my husband put the second rupee in Baba's hand. Baba took it and said, "Don't worry - I won't ask you for more or you will have to sell your ring and your wife's bangles, won't you?" My husband was speechless with awe that Baba knew our private conversation. He was enchanted by the omniscience of Baba. This reverence for Baba helped to strengthen his devotion and confidence in Baba's abilities and divinity. Any remaining doubts he had about Baba vanished."

A year after that, in 1915, my elder son Muralidhar was born. We took him to Shirdi for Baba's darshan when he was eight months old. Then we had two more sons - Bhaskar and Dinakar. We took them to Shirdi for Baba's darshan too. I remember one incident of that time very well. When Dinakar was two months old we placed him in front of Baba's feet. Baba picked him up and threw him up into the air. My heart stopped with fear, but nothing happened to Dinakar. Another devotee who was sitting beside Baba caught him and handed him to us. Perhaps Baba knew in advance that the devotee would catch Dinakar, otherwise he would not have flung the child up and sat quiet, making no attempt to catch him again."
I had a total of eight sons and a daughter. Only then did I realise the full meaning of the boon granted by Baba when I went the first time to Shirdi. "Take! One, two, three, four!" said Baba at the time. "Take as many as you want." He gave me as many children as I desired.

My husband also became a staunch devotee of Baba in the course of time. His faith and devotion to Baba increased day by day. One incident will suffice to show the extent of his devotion. Our second son, Bhaskar, died when he was ten. My husband did not fall into a depression as he had when his first son died, but accepted it as the will of Baba. He took all the children to the puja room, and lining them up in front of Baba there, said, "Baba you may take all these too if you wish, but the faith and devotion I have for you will stay firm as a rock."

Smt. Parvatbai Sapatnekar finished her account of her reminiscences of Sri Sai Baba. Lt. Col. Nimbalkar next interviewed her son, Dinakar Sapatnekar. It seems the Sapatnekars were from a village called Sapatne, hence the name Sapatnekar. They then settled in the taluka headquarter village of Madhegaon. They were a family of lawyers. Their grandfather was a lawyer and so was their father, Mahadev Waman Sapatnekar, who was a prominent, successful and rich lawyer of Akkalkot.

Dinakar disclosed another interesting fact about his father. He said that his father was a devotee of Sri Datta and would frequently go to Gangapur. When his first wife and son both died, Sapatnekar was so disillusioned with life that he wanted to commit suicide by drowning himself in the river there at Gangapur. It seems Datta himself saved him from committing suicide and ordered him to Akkalkot. Then Baba drew him to Shirdi in 1913 and made him his devotee. Dinakar Sapatnekar had been employed as a judge in the service of the state of Maharashtra and was retired, being 68 years old at the time of this interview.

Nimbalkar interviewed Smt. Parvatbai Sapatnekar on 13.9.1983. She breathed her last about a month and a half later on 30.10.1983.

BAYAJABAI -THE PERSONIFICATION OF LOVE

Sri Sai Baba was the human shape assumed by God. He was an example of how the power of God, which is infinite, can fit into the human casing made of the five elements and show divine power through the body.

Of those devotees who served Baba when he was alive, over ninety-five per cent saw this divine power in him and became his devotees. As Sri Madhav Adkar sang in his arati, "Jayaa manee jaisaa bhaava, tayaa taisaa anubhava! Daavisee dayaaghanaa aisee tuzee hee maava!" (As is one's intent, such shall be our experience. As such, bestow thy grace upon each according to their conception of thee. Such is thy divine sport, oh compassionate one.)

Baba's devotees saw Baba as a reflection of their own feelings for him. The remaining five per cent became his devotees not because of Baba's power, but because they loved him. They tied Baba to them with the silken fetters of love. It is on these, who loved Baba unconditionally, that Baba rained his grace so copiously. Looking at Baba through their loving eyes, Baba's divine shape appears to us a glorious rainbow of love and affection. Of all those devotees who danced happily, fully soaked in the gentle rain of Baba's love, the foremost was Sri Tatya Kote Patil. The love and devotion shown by his parents Sri Ganapati Kote and Smt. Bayajabai for Baba was the main reason behind the immense good fortune of Sri Tatya's attachment to Baba.

It was in Shirdi that Sri Sai Baba revealed himself to the world to save humankind. He accompanied Chandbhai Patil's marriage party to Shirdi and stayed on there. When Baba first came to Shirdi, he appeared to the locals as a mere mad fakir and a beggar. In those days, when he kept his divine powers hidden, only three or four villagers were attracted to him. They themselves could not say what attracted them to Baba. Mhalsapati, Kasiram Shimpi, Appa Jogle and Ganapati Kote Patil were the four devotees who served Sri Sai Baba with the utmost love and devotion at that time.

Of these four, Baba was very close and intimate with Ganapati Kote Patil. Baba looked upon Bayajabai, Ganapati Kote's wife, as his own sister and used to call her as such. Sri Sai Sarananand writes in his book about the first time Baba met Ganapati Kote Patil and Bayajabai as follows.

"Perhaps the first person who introduced himself to Baba was Mahalsapati." After he talked to Baba, Mahalsapati felt that he was a saint and believed in him. From then on he would meet Baba without fail every day. He later introduced Baba to his friends, Kashiram Shimpi and Appa Jogle. These three would meet Baba every day and arrange for Baba's needs to be met.

Ganapati Kote Patil heard about Baba from these three and went with his wife, Bayajabai, to meet Baba. Baba rose from his seat and welcomed them graciously, saying to Bayajibai, "Oh lady, you are really my sister!"

BAYAJABAI – PERSONIFICATION OF LOVE

Bayajabai was enthralled by Baba. She was devoted to him and vowed that she would not eat without first giving food to Baba. In those days, Baba would not stay in one place, he would be roaming about, sometimes in the village and sometimes in the fields outside the village and staying there. As Bayajabai had vowed not to eat unless she fed Baba first, she would search high and low for him until she found him. She would wait at home for Baba till noon every day in case he would come to beg for food. If he had not appeared by then, she would put the food in a basket and placing it on her head, start searching for him in the fields and thickets outside the village. When she found him she would make him sit down and would feed him with the utmost love and affection. After some time, as if to save Bayajabai the bother, Baba started staying at the mosque and having his food there.

Sri Tatya Kote Patil writes about the itinerant, homeless Baba of those early days at Shirdi thus.
“When Baba first came to Shirdi, he wore a green kufni (a long shirt-like garment extending down to the mid-calf) and a green headdress. After four months he changed the colour of his headdress to white. When Baba first came to Shirdi, he did not have a fixed abode. After a few months of wandering about, he stayed at the mosque for ten months. Later, he started living under the neem tree. Again after a while he moved to the mosque. He stayed there for two or three years and then shifted to the grove of trees between the Lendi and the Seera rivulets. Someone or other among the devotees would arrange for his food there. After staying for two-and-a-half years at the grove of trees, Baba finally moved back to the mosque, and stayed there till he entered samadhi.”

BAYAJABAI – PERSONIFICATION OF LOVE

Baba would not go to all the houses in Shirdi to beg for his food. He would beg only at the houses of Patil Bua Waman Gondkar, Nandram Marwadi, Ganapati Kote Patil and Sakharam Shelke. He would hang a cloth around his left shoulder and carrying a tin in his right hand, go first to the house of Patil Bua Gondkar. He would stand in front of the house and shout with his carillon like voice, “Aango Radha, bhakar” (Radha, bring the roti).

He would then go and stand in front of Nandram Marwadi’s house and shout, “Nand de khore, bhakar lao” (Oh son of Nand, get the roti). After this came the turn of Ganapati Kote Patil (Bayajabai). He would stand in front of the house and shout “Abaade abaad, Bayajamami roti Lao” (Aunty Bayaja, get the roti).

Baba would go these houses to beg food even two or three times a day. Two or three years after Baba came to Shirdi, famine was rampant and the people were suffering. During the famine, Baba went only to the houses of the richer amongst these devotees, such as Nandram Marwadi and Ganapati Kote Patil. When Baba went to beg for food, he would stand in the forecourt beyond the doorway and take the offered food but never step into the house.

Bayajabai used to invite Baba to come in and rest a while whenever he came begging, but Baba would always politely decline. The most he would do was to sit in the shade in the forecourt of their house. Bayajabai would plead with Baba to sit inside the house and eat there in front of her but Baba would do as he pleased. Rarely would he sit in their forecourt and have his food there. Bayajabai would be ecstatic with happiness on those occasions when Baba ate in front of her. She would plead, “Eat a little more, try this curry…” and make him eat a little extra. “Have something to drink,” she would beg Baba.

BAYAJIBAI – THE PERSONIFICATION OF LOVE

Normally Baba ate bhakri (unleavened bread of coarsely ground millet) with a little curry. Sometimes he would ask for milk, curd, buttermilk, pickles, onion or pappadam (very thin chapati-like preparation of black gram, fried in oil or roasted over coals) and eat them with relish. Bayajabai would always keep these foods ready in case he asked for them.

Bayajabai served Baba thus with great love and unswerving devotion for a long time. We are unfortunate that no written record is available to us of what Baba taught Bayajabai or what divine experiences he gave her. One incident is, however, available to us about Bayajabai from the reminiscences of Tatya Patil.

Radhakrishna Ayi was first staying at Pandaripur and later came to Shirdi. Once she decided to go on a pilgrimage to Pandaripur from Shirdi by foot. Bala Shimpi and Madhav Fasle also started along with her. They wanted to take part in the festival which would be held at Pandaripur on the eleventh (ekadasi) day of the month of Ashaad. My mother, a few others, and I too decided to go to Pandaripur to take part in the festival. As Radhakrishna Ayi and her group had already left, we decided to go by cart as far as Ahmednagar and catch up with them, after which we could all proceed further by foot. My mother, my brother-in-law, Lakshmibai Shinde and a few other ladies all got ready for the trip.

Dear Deepa, Sai Ram !

Welcome to this divine site - the SAI Mandir. Several posts of great souls are available here and teach us a lot and improve our standards in all respects.

In my view, unless we are lucky, we can not even reach this sort of sites. As Baba said, this - our joining in this site is also a part of HIS leela.

Though, we are  from Hyderabad, my Hub is born in Rajahmundry and I was born in Nidadavole. See what a coincedence that Baba has arranged our meeting in this Mandir. His Leelas are unpredictable and unimaginable.

May Baba bless all of us with more love and devotion.

Dear Kavitha jee
                         SAI RAM.

I have a question with me. Basically i am fond of books. I often surf and iam very intersted to read books of various yogis and satguru's. I usually read Parama Poojya Sri Ekkirala Bhadwaja's Books. In that context i have read his "SaiLeelamrutham" also. I already read "Satcharitra" by Ammula Sambasiva Rao translation of Hemadpanth's book.

But the things u are writing as a espisodes are not seen any where. They are very good and heart touching. Its very nice to hear about the reminiscences of Tatya Patil as well as Mrs.Sapatnekar.
Really you are the blessed child of shri sai.

i think they were not so clear in satcharitra. If u suggest me where did u get those so that i can go through.

Pardon me if anything was wrong.

And kavitha jee pls do a favor to me.

BAYAJABAI – PERSONIFICATION OF LOVE

OM SRI SAI RAM

My mother hurried in and said, "Baba, have you sent for me? The sun has set and the dusk is deepening. We are all ready to start." Baba placidly said, "Mother, go home. Do not start today. Do not even start tomorrow. Start the day after tomorrow. Do not ask why. Do not consult anyone in this matter. Here, take this udi and go." My mother did not hesitate a second or even take time to think. She said, "Alright Baba, we will go the day after as you say." We unloaded the carts and sent them off. The friends and relatives who had come to see us off left for their homes. Later, Madhavrao saw the astrological calendar and charts and said that the day was not an auspicious one for travel.

On the morning of the third day, we again got ready to travel. Baba cheerfully gave udi to each of us and came as far as the highway to see us off. We reached Puthamba as planned and after bathing and having a light repast got into the train and reached Bewoor by eight a.m. We met Radhakrishna Ayi's group by nine a.m. That day we reached Narsingpur by lunchtime and had the darshan of Sri Narsing Maharaj. Starting again from there, we reached Pandaripur by the evening of the next day. Cholera struck Pandaripur by the eleventh day of the waxing moon and by the next day was raging throughout the town. Some of us wanted to leave immediately for Shirdi but I was adamant that we should stay till the day of the full moon.

My mother was also scared. She met the mamalatdar, Sri Nana Saheb Chandorkar, who was an ardent devotee of Baba, and asked him to convince me to return to Shirdi. Nana Saheb sent for Bala Shimpi and me and advised us to return immediately to Shirdi. Baba knew that cholera would ravage Pandaripur, but seeing our enthusiasm for the trip could not forbid us to go to Pandaripur."

OM SRI SAI RAM !

Dear Dipika, Sai Ram!

It is very nice to hear that Baba has invited you. Have a nice darshan and as many aartis as possible. Please include in your list the samadhis of Abdul Baba and other saints. As you know from Sai Leelamritham, pl visit Lakshmibaiji's , Marthandji's (Bhakt Mhalsapathiji's son)places.

Please pray on behalf of all of us.

From Sai Leelamritham, you can get a clear idea of all the places that are to be visited. You can go to Sakkori, Singanapoor - Temple of Saniswaran and offer poojas - I heard, only gents would be allowed inside the temple. If you are going by a private conveyance, Nasik, Tryambak( on the hill, you can visit and perform pooja at River Godavari's orgin spot), Grihsneshwar (Dwadasha Jyotirlingam) can also be visited.

You can add a picnic to your piligrimage, on the way you can visit Aurangabad - BibiMaqbara (built by Aurangjeb - a replica of Tajmahal in pink stones) and Ellora caves.

BAYAJABAI – PERSONIFICATION OF LOVE

While this may seem a very inconsequential leela of Baba, a careful examination will reveal a great deal about the underlying principles of Baba's teachings. Baba said once, "My deeds are unfathomable." We should try to understand the unfathomable deeds of Baba in the light of his teachings. This attempt on our part is also a part of our endeavour along the path. But to try to seek justification for the deeds of Sri Sai Baba in astrology or the science of Vaastu is foolish.

Bayajabai and her group were all packed and ready to go to Pandaripur. Baba called her and asked her to postpone the trip. She did that without a second thought. This shows her infinite trust and devotion for Baba. This is the type of total surrender to his will that Baba has tried to teach us through his sayings, deeds and leelas. That is what we have to inculcate in ourselves and achieve as devotees of Sri Sai Baba. Shama wanted to see why Baba had suddenly cancelled the trip of Bayajabai. So he searched the calendar and thought he found the explanation, that it was an inauspicious day for travel.

There is a danger that some devotees may take Shama's words as an indication that Baba approved the use of astrological tables, calendars and charts. They may feel that Baba encouraged the devotees to see good days for travel and other such traditional superstitions. A little thought will reveal that this feeling is baseless. If the reason why Baba asked Bayajabai to postpone the trip was that the day was inauspicious, why would Baba give them udi and his blessings for departure a bare half hour previously? Would Baba not know that it is not an auspicious day for travel before he gave them the udi? Perhaps Baba had foreknowledge that his action would be misinterpreted to mean that astrology and such stupid superstitions had his imprimatur.

That is why he had forbidden Bayajabai, "Do not consult anyone in this matter." This means that Baba, indirectly, and in his inimitable style, had indicated his disapproval of the consultation of astrological calendars and charts and the following of the other superstitious practices.

Kavitha Jee

Sai Ram!

Please clear me a doubt. Who ever catches baba feet should never bother about astrological disorders rite?

Baba will take care of everything.rite?

Why I am asking this is my kid is 2.6 yrs old. She has "JanamaShani" and she has serious suffering in her health from the time of her birth. some astrolgers predicted that this will continue till she is 5 yrs old ie till 2009.
But by baba's grace when she entered into 3rd year her health was improved better.
Iam doing everything they say and performing many poojs for her. On the other Part i truely belive in baba and i have full faith in him.
so i dont like to visit astrologers. becos when baba is with me then y should i run here and there? But according to some conditions it happened to visit them. It's not like i dont believe in astrology or i dont like astrologers. But i think who ever believes in baba, dont have a need to consult others.

Am I correct. I am having this doubt from past 1 month and trying to find out. but today your post gave me the answer. I think baba gave the advice for me through You.

Pls suggest me in this issue. What can i do better.

BAYAJABAI – PERSONIFICATION OF LOVE

OM SRI SAI RAM !

To think as Tatya did, that Baba had told them to postpone the trip due to his foreknowledge of the cholera epidemic striking Pandaripur, does not fit the facts. If this were the reason, Baba, as he did on many occasions with many devotees, would have told them to cancel the trip altogether. Also, if this were indeed the reason, why had Baba not placed any obstacles to the departure of Radhakrishna Ayi's party which left for Pandaripur earlier, as he did to Bayajabai's group? So why did Baba do this leela? Only Baba knows the meaning of his leelas. As the arati says, "Agaadha tavaa karani" (your acts are unfathomable); Baba's acts are beyond the grasp of mere mortals.

Bayajabai occupies a prominent place amongst the devotees of Sri Sai Baba, in the history of Baba. After serving Baba with sisterly love, Bayajabai breathed her last in 1914. Her husband, Ganapati Kote, had also died a few years earlier. It is natural for the devotees of Baba to be eager to visit the house of Bayajabai where Baba had begged food for sixty years. Bayajabai's family was staying first in a street east of the Chavadi near the present location of Ichhiraj Hotel. They later sold that house and built a new one behind the (present) Pilgrims Hotel near the Mahalakshmi Temple. Now that house has been converted to a hotel and is called the Bayajabai Guest House. Baba would beg for food in both these houses.

OM SRI SAI RAM

My children, do not identify Me with this body of soil. The entire universe is My body. Sai is present in all flora and fauna, in the sky and on earth. He dwells everywhere. He speaks, eats, drinks and walks through all living bodies on the earth. He works through all hands. This is the mystery of My Sai-hood. The Sarkar in Dwarkamai is full of sport. My Fakir is playing through all souls. --SAIBABA

TATYA - SWEET UNFORGETABLE MEMORIES

When one dozes in the presence of God!

"Baba used to make fun of me. Sometimes. when I was fast asleep he would take me out of the mosque and hide himself. When I woke up and started crying out and asking who it was who had thrown me out, he would come out mischievously smiling at me.

During the hot summer days it was sweltering hot specially near the dhuni. When I overslept near the dhuni,.  Baba, ever on the lookout to tease me, used to cover me with a blanket, stealthily getting up late in the night . Sweating badly, I would wake up, unable to bear the sultriness and sit on the steps of mosque. Baba, pretending to be anxious, would shout for me loudly and when I come out into his view he would say with a sigh, “Thank heavens! So you are here.”

Many a time when I was asleep he would press my head hard and would move my legs somewhere else and put me back to sleep.

Nursing or Cursing!!

The author of Sri Sai Sacharitra wrote that Baba and Mahalsapati used to massage Tatya’s head and limbs as he went into deep sleep. Sri Tatya elaborated on this as follows.

“Baba is aware that I work in the fields during the entire day and that  as a result, my body suffers pains. So he and Mahalsapati used to massage my body and limbs, and that would worry me a lot. One fine day I firmly told Baba, as well as Mahalsapati, that it was not proper on their part to do so. How come I should receive their service, instead of being of service to them?

Baba completely ignored my sentiments and furthermore told me, “It is perfectly all right, we are both the same. People think I am great but it is not so. I am just like you!” However, I threatened that I would never come to the mosque again should Baba repeat such acts. And I did not just threaten, I did so! Once I stubbornly avoided going anywhere near the mosque for ten or twelve days which made Baba very upset. He called out to me loudly should I pass that way, even at a far distance, but I would gesticulate to him from afar that there is no connection between him and me, and move away. Then Kaka Dixit came on a visit to Shirdi and learnt that I was not going to the mosque any longer. He called me up and persuaded me that I must go as usual as I was the son of Bayajamami and Baba loved me very much.

TATYA - SWEET UNFORGETABLE MEMORIES
Mahalsapati used to get sick quite frequently for a period of three to four years. During such times Baba would not allow him to sleep at the mosque and would send him home. As for me, I slept in the mosque for fourteen or fifteen years along with Baba, but I discontinued sleeping there five or six years prior to his mahasamadhi (passing away).
After staying for two to three years in the mosque, Baba changed his residence to the area of dense vegetation between the Lendi and Sira rivulets. He stayed there for two and a half years. During this period, one of his devotees would take him food every day. Raghu Patil, and four or five other kids and myself visited him there during this period, but by then we had given up our juvenile pranks. Sri Nanasaheb Dengle and other devotees also came for Baba’s darshan in those days.
A mahatma called Gangagir Bua organized a nama saptaha (chanting of God’s name continuously for seven days and nights) in Shirdi in 1896. Only a few villagers took part, and this lack of interest provoked Gangagir Bua, he went angrily to the mosque and indicating Baba to the villagers, said, “This is a diamond. And now this diamond is lying on this dung-heap of a village. Heed my words all of you! He will change the very shape of Shirdi.” Gangagir stalked away angrily and left Shirdi. I followed him to Rui village and had his darshan. I begged forgiveness on behalf of all the villagers of Shirdi and asked him to organize the nama saptaha once again. At first he did not agree. I then followed him to many places and took part in the nama saptahas with him and he eventually softened and came to Shirdi for the Dasara Festival. I think I was 17 or 18 at that time. When I told Baba about my attending the nama saptahas he was very happy about it. From then onwards I started going to the mosque quite often. Baba loved me as his own child and never let me go anywhere without his permission.”

TATYA - SWEET UNFORGETABLE MEMORIES

Initially only Mahalsapati used to sleep in the mosque with Baba, but once Tatya became intimate with Baba he also began sleeping there every day and when Baba started spending alternate nights in Chavadi, Tatya slept in the mosque whenever Baba was there. But Baba never permitted anyone other than Mahalsapati and Tatya to sleep in the mosque. In his Sri Sai Satcharitra Hemadpant describes the way these three slept in the mosque like this.
“Vasudeva (Vishnu) always lives in the hearts of mahatmas. Those devotees who have the good fortune of staying in the close vicinity of such mahatmas are blessed. Tatya and Mahalsapati are two such blessed souls who slept with Baba in the mosque. How great is their merit that they had such enormous good fortune, for Baba had the greatest of liking for them both and loved them equally. These three would keep their heads to the east, west and north and sleep with their feet touching each other. They lay down and kept talking to each other till the late hours of the night. If anyone dozed off the other two would shake him awake. If Tatya fell asleep and started snoring, Baba and Mahalsapati would shake him, push him about and wake him by pressing hard his head, legs or back. Tatya slept with Baba for fourteen years in this manner, leaving his parents at home. How can we measure the love Tatya had for Baba? In the same way can anyone put a value on the love Baba had for Tatya? Those sweet days were unforgettable. Even though those days have gone, the sweet memories of them linger on. When Tatya’s father passed away, the responsibility of the house fell on Tatya and from that time on he slept at home.”
Baba’s love and kindness will always fall copiously like a gentle rain on devotees such as Tatya and Mahalsapati. Their reminiscences give us all a great experience of Baba’s love. Baba regarded and honoured Bayajabai as more than his own sister. Tatya, Bayajabai’s son had called Baba, “mama” (maternal uncle) since his childhood. In truth, theirs was a relationship akin to uncle and nephew. Baba, who normally had a serious mien and was always immersed in his thoughts, would however, behave very informally and lovingly joke and laugh with Tatya.

TATYA - SWEET UNFORGETABLE MEMORIES

Let us see how Tatya himself describes their relationship. “Baba would sometimes join hands with me and whirl around with me playing games. He would sometimes wrestle with me. I used to suddenly lift him up and placing him either on my shoulders or back would run about with him. He would worry that I may strain my back by carrying him and would anxiously advise me not to do so, and laugh heartily. He used to call me Tatya or Kotya or sometimes the “horse-faced one. “
Once Baba and I were standing at the shop of Nandu Marwadi. That was the day of the Holi Festival. Baba was in high spirits because of the festival. I too was feeling elated and suddenly picked up Baba and started walking towards the mosque. Baba was shouting all along the way, “Hey, Kotya! Stop! Put me down or your stomach muscles will cramp and you will suffer.” I paid no attention to his shouting and carried him safely to the mosque. I did this sort of thing once or twice on later occasions also. Later I stopped, fearing that Baba’s body may feel pain by my rough handling.
“Baba would sometimes tease me by hiding my upper cloth either behind the bag of wheat kept in the mosque, or some other place. He would then sit in the mosque as if he was innocent. When I asked him where my cloth was, his reply was always the same “What do I know about your cloth, do I look as if I would steal other’s clothes?” I would say, “You must have hidden my cloth somewhere.” Baba would also join me in searching for my cloth and show a lot of concern that it was lost. He would then bring it out from where he had hidden it, pretending that he had just found it.
Sometimes he would slink in from behind and cover my eyes with his hands. When I asked who it was, he would run and hide behind the pillar and play hide and seek with me.

TATYA - SWEET UNFORGETABLE MEMORIES

“I would purchase whatever Baba needed from the market. Once Baba gave me four rupees and asked me to get betel leaves, ber fruit (zizyphus jujuba) and some other stuff. I went to the market at Rahata Village and brought all the items Baba wanted. I went back to the mosque and keeping them all in front of Baba said, “Baba, see how good these ber fruit are. I selected them for you specially from the market.”
Baba, however, did not touch even one of the ber fruit which I had selected with such care for him, and gave them all to Mahalsapati and me to eat. “I was hurt and I refused to eat the fruit unless Baba ate a few too. Baba said that he did not care to eat fruit at that particular time and insisted that I eat them. I too was adamant. This argument batted to and fro for a long time without either of us giving in an inch. Finally, I wrapped the fruit in my kerchief and went away. “That night I brought the fruit again to Baba along with the usual roti and begged him to eat them. Baba adamantly said that I should eat them first. The same argument started again between us. Finally, loosing my temper, I flung the fruit in the forecourt of the mosque and stalked away to see the tamasha (street play) being performed in the village.
“At other times Baba would put my fingers between his fingers and press them. When I did the same to him he would act as if he was in great pain and shout that I had broken his fingers. “Sometimes he would ask me to show my strength and taking my hand into his would press it hard. When I did the same to him he would writhe and complain as if he was in great pain and his hand was broken.

TATYA - SWEET UNFORGETABLE MEMORIES

“Sometimes I removed Baba’s headscarf and made him wear mine in the shindi shahi manner of the Maratha landlord. I would also put a cloth around his neck and bring him a mirror. Joining in the fun, he would peer at himself in the mirror and imitating my way of talking, walking and various expressions, would roll his eyes and say, “Oh Mirror, please tell me if this Kotya looks like me and acts like me? Do tell!” He would then return all the clothes and mirror to me.
“After I left the mosque, Baba and Mahalsapati picked up all the fruit I had flung away in my temper. Baba sent word to me via Mahalsapati to come to the mosque. I went back eagerly in the hope that Baba had become more pliant and would eat the fruit. But I was disappointed to see that he was as adamant as ever. I again went away angrily to see the tamasha. Baba again sent Daggu and Kondya to convince me somehow or other to come back to the mosque. I refused to go.
After a while Mahalsapati came again and said that Baba was waiting anxiously for me to come back. I was not willing to go, but in the end, I was persuaded. Baba touched some fruit to his lips and gave them all to Mahalsapati. “Bhagat, you eat some of these. Give the rest to him and ask him to eat,” said Baba. My ego was satisfied and my anger lessened. Baba did not talk to me the whole night long. He himself had sent for the fruit from the market. Why then did he not eat them is a secret only he knows.”

TATYA - SWEET UNFORGETABLE MEMORIES

Baba’s acts are deep and beyond the comprehension of mere mortals such as us. If any other devotee were in the place of Tatya, he would have thought, “Why did Baba refuse the fruit? Anyway it is a leela only Baba can fathom,” and he would have humbly and gratefully accepted the fruit from Baba. From the Dixit Diaries
Baba’s Equal Treatment of All Beings Once when Baba was eating his food in the mosque along with the other devotees, a dog entered and ate some of the curd. Bade Baba, the fakir of Malegaon saw this, and considering the curd to have been polluted by the dog, told a boy nearby to drive the dog away. The boy left his food and stood up to do it. Noticing this Baba noticed asked, “What is the matter?” Bade Baba told him that the curd was polluted by the dog. Baba said, “Oh brother, that curd was very tasty (showing that he had tasted the curd in the form of the dog, and his identification with the dog). Take the curd home, make kadi and bring it for the next meal. I’ll eat it.” Bade Baba took the curd away and prepared kudi and brought it to the mosque. Baba ate it with relish.
The intimacy between Tatya and Baba became the cause of Tatya’s temper and adamant attitude towards Baba. Baba did not explain to Tatya why he did not eat the fruit. Maybe Tatya would not have understood the reason even if Baba had explained. So Baba himself, who was totally without ego and was the very embodiment of kindness, conceded to Tatya by touching the fruit first to his lips and then giving them to him to eat as a compromise.

TATYA - SWEET UNFORGETABLE MEMORIES

Sometimes Baba would buy groceries and other ingredients from the market and cook a meal himself. He would normally prepare either mutton pulao or sweet porridge or rice boiled with lentils. He would never use a ladle while cooking. He would put his hand into the boiling cauldron to mix the food while it was cooking. His hand would not be burned by this feat. After the food was ready Baba would have it offered to God by the Muslim cleric and then send some to the houses of Mahalsapati and Tatya. The remaining food was given to the devotees who assembled there. Once some devotees gave two cows to Baba as a present. Baba gave them away to Tatya and Sagun Meru Naik.
The number of devotees visiting Baba gradually started to increase from 1900. Approximately 150 to 200 people could be fed daily on the food offerings made to Baba by the devotees. Baba would, however, mix the alms he got with a little of the food offerings, and have his lunch with ten to twelve devotees.
Tatya and some other devotees would eat in the mosque every day. The fakir of Malegaon, Bade Baba, would sit on Baba’s right while Tatya Patil would sit on his left. Baba and Bade Baba would eat from the same plate while Tatya, Ramachandra Patil and Bayyaji Patil would together eat from another plate.

TATYA’S REMINISCENCES OF SRI SAI BABA

Once Tatya came hurriedly to the mosque to seek Baba's permission to go by horse cart to the weekly market at Kopergaon where he had some urgent work. “Baba, I am going to Kopergaon,” he blurted out hurriedly. Baba said, “Why are you in such a hurry? Slow down a little. Let the market be. Do not leave Shirdi today or go anywhere.”
Tatya insisted that he had very urgent work at the market in Kopergaon and that he would go. Seeing his unyielding insistence, Baba relented and said, “Go if you wish but do take Shama along.” Tatya, feeling that he did not require the company of Shama for the short trip to Kopergaon, disregarded Baba's words, got into the horse-cart and whipped the horses to a gallop. The cart passed Shirdi and reached the vicinity of Savul Vihir village. Of the pair of horses, one was new and unused to being yoked to the cart. It therefore galloped faster than its companion and stumbled and fell.
Tatya fell out of the cart but did not suffer any major injuries due to the grace of Baba. In the same way, he once again disregarded Baba's advice and had an accident while going to Kolhar village. In this manner Baba had directly, as well as indirectly, looked after both the worldly and the spiritual welfare of his Tatya.

DID BABA SACRIFICE HIS LIFE TO SAVE TATYA’S?

Sri Ramachandra Kote Patil fell seriously ill in 1916. All types of medication were tried but were found to be futile. Everyone thought that his early death was inevitable. He too was resigned to his death and waited with dread for the day. One night Baba presented him with his divine vision and said, “Do not fear. I have stopped your death. You will get well soon. I am only worried about Tatya. He will die in 1918 on Vijayadasami day, but do not reveal this to anyone, especially Tatya. If you tell him this, it will only serve to terrorise him before his death.”
Amazingly Ramachandra Patil started to recover his health from the very next day and attained his former good health in a few days. He was an intimate friend of Tatya and knew that Baba’s words were unalterable and had to come true. He realised that Tatya had only two more years left in this world and was engulfed in sorrow. He could not keep this burning anguish within himself for long and shared the secret divulged by Baba with his friend Bala Shimpi alone.

DID BABA SACRIFICE HIS LIFE TO SAVE TATYA’S?

As Ramachandra Patil and Bala Shimpi feared, Tatya fell seriously ill as the Vijayadasami of 1918 approached. Baba too fell ill around the same time. Tatya’s condition worsened day-by-day and turned critical one or two days before Vijayadasami. He could not even come to the mosque for the darshan of Sri Sai Baba. One day Baba sent word to him to come to the mosque and have his meal there, but as Tatya could not summon enough strength to even rise from his bed, some devotees helped him to go to the mosque where Baba fed him with semolina pudding with his own hands despite his ill health.
Tatya could only swallow a couple of mouthfuls with great difficulty. Baba told him, “Tatya, I have arranged for two swings (carriages) for us initially. But I have changed my mind. I alone will go on now presently. Now you may go home.” Tatya understood the import of Baba’s words and started sobbing. He said, “Baba, why do you not send me first?” Baba replied, “I am a fakir, there is no one to cry for me when I go away. But all your people will grieve if you go.”
Tatya heard the tone of finality in Baba’s words and his sorrow intensified and he started weeping piteously. He said, “Baba, if I go, it is only my relatives who will grieve. But if you go, you will make many people of this world orphans. If you live on many people will attain salvation by your mere darshan. What of me? My life is a burden to me and to my relatives too.”
Baba would not brook any further talk in this vein from Tatya. He scolded him lovingly, “Alright, no more talk from you. Go home.” He put udi on Tatya’s forehead and sent him home, watching him with a heavy heart until he was out of sight.   Tatya says, “I used to fast on the holy days of ekadasi, the Mondays of the month of Sravan, and on Shivaratri. However, Baba's opinion was that there was no spiritual or material benefit whatsoever in fasting. He would make me eat something or other on those holy days and make me break my vow of fasting. One Shivratri day I said, ‘Baba please let me observe fast at least on this day. Please do not make me eat anything today."

DID BABA SACRIFICE HIS LIFE TO SAVE TATYA’S?

Baba was relentless, “Eat” he pressed. “What Shivratri are you talking about?” Dada Kelkar who was near also told me to obey Baba and not argue with him. I did not object any more and never fasted from that day onwards. In the same manner, we have earlier seen how Baba discouraged Tatya from going on a pilgrimage to Jujuri village one Mahashivratri day.
Having been very close to him, Tatya had the opportunity of seeing Baba in some very rare spiritual moods. Tatya recalls one such instance as follows: “Sometimes Baba was in a deep spiritual trance," said Tatya. “During these rare occasions Baba would hold a tambura in his hands and dance in ecstasy, forgetting himself and his body. The graceful, rhythmic movements of his feet, hands and eyes would enrapture all those who witnessed his dance. He would sing with an angelic voice and his song would charm all listeners.
Dancing thus, Baba used to gesticulate as if he were playing the flute and stand with his feet crossed one in front of the other. For those fortunate devotees who happened to see him in such a mood, it would appear as though they were seeing Lord Krishna at Brindhavan, rather than Baba. All those who saw him in that enthralled state were themselves enraptured by an unknown, other worldly feeling and were transported with delight.

DID BABA SACRIFICE HIS LIFE TO SAVE TATYA’S?

On the Deepavali day of 1910, Baba, sitting opposite the dhuni and adjusting the firewood, suddenly put his hand into the fire. His hand was badly burnt. When the devotees enquired as to why he had done this Baba replied that he did so in order to save a child at some distant place who was about to fall into a furnace from its mother’s lap. Tatya was in tears seeing the burnt hand of Baba. “Why do you cry?" Baba remonstrated with Tatya gently. “We should not flinch even if this body is kept in a red-hot furnace of two thousand dung cakes. That is the hallmark of a true jnani. (a self-realized person; a sage; one who has attained realization by the path of knowledge)
However, Tatya did not always taste the nectar of Baba’s love but occasionally tasted his anger as well. In 1914, Kakasaheb Dixit was enlarging the forecourt of the mosque as he felt that it was very congested for the huge press of devotees. One night when Baba was sleeping in Chavadi, all the devotees got together and after great labour dug holes in front of the mosque and placed pillars in them. Baba returned to the mosque in the morning, and on seeing this flew into a rage. In that anger he seized hold of Tatya's throat with one hand and with the other started easily pulling out the pillars which even two or three devotees had struggled to carry. He then pulled Tatya’s turban off and setting fire to it flung it into one of the holes dug for the pillars. He then took out a rupee coin and flung that into the hole too. Baba's eyes were like balls of fire in the throes of that anger.
None dared approach that personification of rage and all stood a safe distance away, too scared to even draw near. Baba did not loosen his grip on Tatya’s neck. The strong Tatya – who normally could carry Baba on his shoulders and run about with him – could not escape Baba's hold no matter how hard he tried. Everyone was worried as to what may happen to Tatya. Bhagoji Shinde gathered up his courage and tried to draw near Baba to extricate Tatya from his grip but Baba shoved him away and threw stones at him. After a while Baba calmed down and sent a devotee to the market for a new turban with golden thread for Tatya. Baba wound the turban around Tatya's head himself as a mark of his approbation.

DID BABA SACRIFICE HIS LIFE TO SAVE TATYA’S?

The day of Vijayadasami dawned and Baba entered mahasamadhi. Tatya’s health astonishingly started improving a few hours after Baba’s mahasamadhi and fully recovered in a couple of days.
The people believed that Baba had sacrificed his own life to save Tatya’s. Hemadpant brings this out in the 42nd chapter of Sri Sai Satcharitra. “It seemed that they both (Baba and Tatya) exchanged a life for a life and a death for a death. The people believed that Baba had sacrificed his life for the sake of Tatya. Baba alone knows whether this is true or not. In this manner Baba had stated Tatya’s name but indicated his own mahasamadhi.” It was not surprising that the people believed thus seeing that Baba had loved Tatya more than his own life itself.
But this is just a blind belief on their part and in fact has no foundation. This is because Baba has clearly stated that he had first arranged for two swings (carriages), one for himself and the other for Tatya. But he had changed his mind and sent one swing back and that only he will be going away. He did not say that he had got only one swing ready for Tatya and that he would be going in that instead of Tatya. Tatya also only requested Baba to send him first but not to send him instead of Baba.

DID BABA SACRIFICE HIS LIFE TO SAVE TATYA’S?

Further; Sri Sai Baba is an incarnation of god whose birth, growth and death is tied with the karma and salvation of many devotees. Baba had saved many devotees from death and indeed had even brought back alive many who were dead too. To save Tatya from death was an easy task for him, it was not necessary for him to sacrifice his own life to save Tatya’s.
As Hemadpant stated, he may have, in his natural cryptic style, indicated his death in advance and said Tatya’s name instead of his own. The feeling of the people that he had sacrificed his life to save Tatya mirrors their belief that he had indeed loved Tatya more than his own life.  Tatya was childless for a long time after his marriage, but felt that he could have children if he married a second time. But as he remained childless for a long time with his second wife, he married yet again.
His third wife, too, did not bear him any children. He was disappointed, and thought that he was not fated to have children so made preparations to adopt the son of his friend, Ramachandra Patil. He arranged for the adoption ceremony and taking the adoption papers went to Sri Sai Baba for his blessings. When Baba saw the papers he said, "Why do you need to adopt anyone? You will get children yourself."

DID BABA SACRIFICE HIS LIFE TO SAVE TATYA’S?

Tatya had an unshakeable belief in Baba's words and immediately stopped the adoption ceremony. But he did not get any children for a long time even after this. Finally he went to Baba and said "My God! You said that I would get children and hence I had stopped the adoption ceremony. But a long time has passed since then and I am still childless. What do you want me to do now?" Baba replied, "Tatya, if you get children you will lose your wealth. Choose whether you want riches or children." Tatya, who was yearning day and night for children, replied "Let the riches go if they go. I want children."
Baba smiled and said, "Alright then, you want children rather than wealth. You will get as many children as the litter of a sow. Go now!" Later, when Tatya was 55 years old, all his wives started bearing children and he ultimately produced a large family. Today his family, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren, number over a hundred. But as Baba had stated, his prosperity vanished and Tatya had to face many financial problems. However, by the grace of Sri Sai Baba, he passed away without a care in 1945, without being in debt to anyone. (These details were given to Saipatham personally by Sri Tatya's son by his second wife, Sri Uttamrao Kote Patil)
Sri Tatya Kote Patil's samadhi is located between the entrance gate to Lendi garden and the power-house of Sri Sai Baba Sansthan. Tatya was widely regarded as the light in the eyes of Sri Sai Baba. Perhaps his samadhi being adjacent to the power-house giving light to the whole of Shirdi is the divine will of Sri Sai Baba and not entirely a coincidence.

Deepa

Dear Deepa, Sai Ram !

Though I am not competent to give any firm answer on this, I wish to share my views on this.

Why does one goes to an astrologer ?  I get 3 reasons –
a.   Weaker mind – temporary problems, problems which have not come to an end, our basic nature
b.   Fear  - that something  may happen and anxiety to prevent if you know what exactly may happen and do some pariharams – poojas, gems etc.
c.   Curiosity - whether I will become a doctor, when construct a house, going abroad, when is my marriage, children their future

From Baba’s teachings, we can really understand that HE is against this foreseers / future tellers etc. and has warned many of his devotees who practiced such sciences. He felt everything we should get only from the GOD  Allah  Our Sai. HE has many a time said “you all are my children and you should get everything from me”.  You have read Sai Leelamritham by Masterji which gives a more detailed approach on this.

But, we do consult astrologers at times for which I feel one of the above should be the reasons. Our prayers must give us more and more strength that we should overcome all such reasons and   develop total belief in Baba.

I will tell you my one experience here. Once I had a serious problem  that all other things were in vain and I decided to consult an astrologer. I went to the astrologer; after the consultation etc., he gave me a photo of Sai Baba saying that he went to a  Baba temple and he was given many photos of Baba. Through this Baba has confirmed to me once again,

a.   I am with you always.
b.   No need of consulting any astrologer

I did not consult any Astrologers later. But i continued to perform pariharams etc. as and when required such as performing pooja for GURU on the Guru transit day and for SANI on a sani transit day.

However, it is Baba who should give us everything including the restrian from astrologers - This is purely my feeling.

I think , I have some information about your doubt. As per an eminent scholar, scientist and Vice Chancellor of Manipal University, Mr. B.M.HEGDE's view; the astrology has got scientific reasons. He has given an examle. If an operation takes place on fullmoon day the bleeding will be more comparing to other days. It means our body, brain responds to the changes in the nature, as the ocean looks different in fullmoon days. Our body  also very much similar to the rest of the creation. Obviously, it reflects on our thoughts, subsequently it dictates our doings as well as our health conditions.

I hope, you will get your doubt clear, if you read all his writings and lectures.

BABA has got hold on creation. He can make turn it in our favour.

After all, he is the creator.

During 80's, One Woman who did not have any issues, used to participate in the Satsang at Acharya Ekkirala Bharadwaja Swamy in Vidya Nagar, Nellore District, A.P. I am giving below the gist of her experience which was available in Swamyji's "SRI SAI LEELAMRITHAM" - old edition.

A Baba devotee - who did not have any children was eagre to become a mother and could not for long. She lost the hope and continued to pray Baba and attend the Satsang at Vidyanagar. She neared the period of Menopause. Once Baba appeared in her dream and asked her what she wanted. She said "Swamy ! You do know everything. Anyway, please bless me with mother hood at least in the next Janma (birth). Baba smiled and said" If you have to wait till next birth, why am I here". and there ended the dream.

After few months, her periods stopped. She consulted a doctor and he said there is a tumour in the uterus and she should be operated upon to remove the uterus it self. She came back and everybody insisted that she should go for the surgery otherwise, it may be dangerous. But, she refused and decided to wait for 10 months and then only decide. All her relatives felt she was risking her life itself. But she didnot bother. IMPOSSIBLE BECAME POSSIBLE. In 10th month, she gave birth to a boy baby and her health was normal. OM SRI SAI RAM!

Baba's closest devotee, infact, the luckiest of all the devotees - Shri Tatya Kote Patil had to wait till he was 55 despite he had three wives. Baba's acts are known to him only for,
HE KNOWS WHAT IS BEST AND FOR WHOM.

May Baba fill the laps of all my sisters with HEALTHY Babies soon.

Sri P.V.Satyanarayana Sastri records, in an article, the strange transformation of a famous atheist of Andhra into an ardent devotee of Baba. Late Sri Gopichand, a famous writer and a prominent atheist, was working as an employee of the Government at Kurnool. His wife was in the hospital, suffering from labour pains for three days and her condition was critical. On the third day, as he walked past the Sai Mandir towards hospital, he thought; "Baba, if you could bless my wife with a safe delivery, I shall believe that your power is divine."

At the hospital his wife delivered a male child. She told him that the old fakir in a vision, sat on her cot and said, "Don't fear, I shall save you." He then put a little vibhuti on her forehead, put a little of it in water and gave her to drink. She at once delivered. And the time of her vision coincided precisely with the time of his silent prayer to Baba! Gopichand named his son as Sai Baba, causing quite a stir among his atheist friends.

In 1955, Sri Jayaram Raje was a lawyer at Thana. Once he finished as devotional reading of the Life of Sai Baba. On the next day, Thursday, he offered sweet meats to Baba's picture. Precisely at lunch time a fakir came to him for food. He was dressed like a Moslem. Raje being an orthodox Brahmin offered him food in a leaf plate and requested him to eat it elsewhere. The fakir insisted that he would eat it there itself. Raje fed him accordingly, considering him as Baba himself.

After lunch the fakir demanded dakshina. Raje said that if a client paid him Rs.50/- he would have given him his due. The fakir said that the client would pay him the dues at 3-15 p.m. that day and that he himself would turn up at 5 p.m. to receive the dakshina. The client who lived far away did turn up at 3-15 p.m. and cleared the dues. The fakir too came up at 5p.m.and received Rs.10/- In return the latter offered Raje a little vibhuti which, by the time it fell into his hand, got mysteriously transformed into a rose. Raje looked up in surprise and the fakir was not to be seen anywhere!

Sivashankar Dixit a devotee of Lord 'Dattatreya', despaired when he knew that he was suffering from tuberculosis. One day he had a dream, he saw a picture of a Moslem saint and bowed to it; at the same moment, a moslem fakir came and applied vibhuti on his forehead and assured him that he would soon be well.

When his condition improved without any treatment, Dixit realized that it was a visitation. One of his friends suggested that the fakir might be Sai Baba himself. Four days after, a group of children who played there, left a small picture of Baba's samadhi in his house. Dixit found that the fakir of his dream precisely resembled the photograph of Sai Baba on the Samadhi, found in that picture. Later he visited Shirdi and saw that there was the marble statue on Baba's samadhi and not a photograph of Sai Baba.

On enquiry he was told that till 1956 a photograph of Sai Baba was indeed kept on Baba's samadhi and that the statue was installed only in that year. The picture of the Moslem fakir which he saw in his dream was indeed the photograph of Baba which was earlier kept on the Samadhi! Henceforth Dixit worshipped Sai Baba as Lord Dattatreya.

Mr.K.D.Matrey once visited Shirdi. The samadhi mandir was under repair, his child who was two and a half years old stood on the first floor, looking at children playing on theroad below. Suddenly she leaned forward, slipped and fell down from the terrace. Several devotees rushed to her but the child stood up smiling and sai, "As I fell down, the old man in that picture leaped up, held me in his hands and kept me down"!

Arthur Osborne, in his book Incredible Sai Baba, writes that in 1960, one Miss.Dutton, his neighbour aged 30 had lived in a nunnery for sometime and decided to leave it. One day, she sat in her cell brooding over the uncertainties of her future. A Moslem fakir approached her cell and sai, "Don't worry. When you leave the nunnery, everything would go well with you". When he demanded dakshina, she said, that she had no money "There are Rs.35/- in the box in your cupboard", he said. When she looked up, she did find the money. But the fakir had vanished! She wondered how a man and a Moslem fakir at that, had gained entry into the Christian nunnery. Since the moment he had appeared, peace filled her anxious heard. She left the nunnery and her nephew looked after her well. Henceforth her faith had grown stronger.

Arthur Osborne who listened to the whole account then showed her a picture of Sai Baba and she at once recognized him as the fakir who had graced her. A Christian ought to live a truly Christian life. The spirit manifests itself in a form like Baba's in the modern age to sean humans from the narrowness which is a by- product of religious diversity of modern society.

Manikshah never ate anything without first offering it to Baba. Yet he could not visit Shirdi for a long time. Once on his way to Nagpur he was sleeping in his reserved compartment. At about 1-30 p.m. he woke up at Manmad. A vague human form appeared and said "Do not proceed further!", and vanished. He looked out but found none. He got down from the train. He had his next train for Nagpur only late in the evening. the pilgrims proceeding to Shirdi suggested that he could join them and he did. By evening he returned to Manmad and was shocked to learn that the earlier train by which he came, later met with a major accident and that many were killed or wounded. Baba had mercifully saved him from the danger and fulfilled his wish to visit Shirdi.

Similarly, one Mr. Mehrothra, agent of a bank at Bareilly, was suspended from service. He then visited Shirdi, and prayed to Baba. One day the latter appeared in his dream, and gave him in writing "You shall be appointed as an agent; do not fear"! Shortly after, he was appointed as such at Deoria

A few years ago, after the birth anniversary of Sri Omkaraswami, at Totaplalli, (East Godavari Dt. , Andhra Pradesh) the devotees gathered in a small room and sang bhajans of Sai Baba. At once Baba's name was found inscribed mysteriously on all the fruits and flowers offered to Sai , including a coconut offered by the Swami and also on watches, rings and necklaces, put before Sai by devotees.

Then some one thought that Sai prasadam shuld be made available to poor people whoc do not have ornaments etc. and kept a ball of Vibhuti on which appeared the letters 'Sai Mandu' in telugu ('Sai medicine'). A devotee suffering from fever and an ailing cow were instantly cured with it.

The devotees wished to raise a Sai mandir at the place. At once they found the words,"Idi Sai Mandiramu" ("This is the presence of Sai!") mysteriously written on a white paper and on the walls of the shrine in the ashram. Sri Omakaraswami later announced in the ashram journal 'Santhi' that ever since, he has been feeling the whole place charged with spiritual power and that he has been experiencing a sense of identity with Sai.

A gentleman at udapur was suffering from stomach ulcer. His wife Surajbai was anxious about him at Kamgaon. One night she had a terrible dream; she saw her husband's body being carried to the cremation ground, and she was telling her brother that she preferred death to widowhood. A strange fakir with a radiant face said to her "Why do you weep?" "Your husband will come to life again". At once here husband sat up and the dream ended.

Later she came to know that on the same day her husband's condition grew hopeless and that he soon recovered quite mysteriously. She later saw the picture of Baba and recognized him as the fakir who come in her dream and started worshipping it ignoring the criticism and objections of her co-religionists. After sometime she visited Shirdi and recognized the place in which the fakir stood in her dream vision was indeed Dwarakamai.

On her next visit to Shirdi she had two dreams.

ONE : Several persons of Jain religion were going round Sai Baba, chanting, "Sainath Boleja".

Two : Several Jain Sadhus were assembled in a large hall and Baba was seated at the centre. She asked him for instruction about a certain matter. Baba then told her to seek it from a saint named Santnath Bhagwan, seated in the assembly.

With this she woke up. She understood thereby that Baba had instructed her to stick to the tenets of her own religion, that her devotion to Baba does not run counter to adherence to one's native faith.

Though Mr. Veerendra Pandya and no faith in Baba, he visited Shirdi with his brother. Later he lived a Kalyan near Bombay and his parents lived in Bihar. Once when his family had to face many difficulties, he took out the picture of Baba which was lying in his trunk, kept it in the shrine and prayed fervently that he should find a solution to his problem by evening.

At once peace descended on him and by evening he hit upon a solution to his problem. Strangely, he learned from a letter that the same solution occurred to his mother to precisely at the same hour. He decided to dedicate all his life, henceforth to the service of Baba, giving up all worldly activity but his mother insisted that he should marry. Again he prayed for a written solution to the problem. Next day, quite casually, his eyes fell on a book entitled, Sri Sai Baba Upasana. He opened it at random and the chapter Bhavasudha came up. The message contained therein was that a householder's life is preferable. Yet he doubted whether it was mere coincidence.

At that time he was residing at Vitarna, a forest area infested by robbers disguised as sadhus. So he instructed his watchman not to permit even 'sadhus' to enter his gate. With these facts in mind, he one day prayed , "Baba, in order that my faith in you could get strengthened, tomorrow a Thursday which is sacred to you, at lunch time a sadhu should come, bless me by keeping his right hand on my head and make passes with the same all over my body. If this is granted, I vow to visit Shirdi".

Next day at lunch time no sadhu turned up. Just as Pandya was about to partake of the first morsel, a sadhu called for food. When Pandya offered him food, the former received the same and put his right hand on Pandys's head by way of blessing and left. Pandya recognized that only a part of his wish was fulfilled and that he did not receive the sadhu in a proper manner. While he was thinking the sadhu returned. Pandya offered him Rs.2/- as dakshina. The fakir passed his hand all over pandy's body, smiled sportively and went away.

Next Thursday Pandya fulfilled his vow.

In 1930 Dr. Rustomji was laid up with pneumonia and was admitted in the Parsi general hospital in Bombay. The doctors gave up hope and he was in coma. A fakir appeared to him in a vision and said, "Let your health recover first; later you will come to know me!" He then went round Rustomji's cot and disappeared. Soon after, the doctors were surprised to find that his condition was quite normal. Ever since, Rustomji yearned to see the fakir. After six month a passenger who sat nest to him in the bus was reading a book on Sai Baba. Rustomji saw Baba's picture in it and realized that he was the fakir that had saved him and started reading about Sai. Shortly he was appointed as a doctor in the Sai Samsthan dispensary at Shirdi in 1949.

Once his wife suffered from severe pain in her eyes. Doctors examined her and declared that even doctors abroad will not be able to help her. At last Sri Rustomji brought her to Shirdi and every day he used to take her round Baba's samadhi. She vowed to offer an embroidered cloth to Baba's palanquin if she was cured in the course of an year she was well and she fulfilled her vow.

An advocate from Boribandar, once started for Shirdi with Rs.100/- in his pocket. Unfortunately (or fortunately ? ) his pocket was picked and he had lost the money and his railway ticket. Later the ticket examination came up and did not relent even after hearing about the theft.

Just then an old gentleman gave the lawyer a ticket and said that his man did not join him as promised. He introduced himself as a devotee of Sai Baba and bore all the expenses of the advocate. At Shirdi the old man presented him with a copy of a book on Sai Baba and also gave him his address in Bombay.

Later, on opening the book the advocate found Rs.100/- in it. When he returned home he found his purse before Baba's picture in his family shrine! He soon went to Bombay but the old man's address could not be traced. The advocate kept the money he found in the book in his shrine for worship. Thereafter his financial condition improved considerably.

Mr. Chitnis was at first fascinated by a beautiful picture of Baba and read several books on him. He visited Shirdi in 1952 and felt that he had returned to his own place. The very first sight of Baba's samadhi had impressed him for good.

In 1957, his sister at Bombay was seriously ill and the family wished to start by plane. His parents could secure a seat by the next plane but his name was kept in the waiting list. Mr.Chitinis sat there silently praying to Baba that by the time they reach Bombay his sister should recover her health. He suddenly found an old fakir standing by. The latter looked sad and gestured accordingly. The next moment, the fakir was not to be seen! It suddenly occurred to him that the fakir was Sai Baba himself. He was surprised to learn that none else saw the fakir. At last when Mr. Chitnis reached Bombay his sister was no more.

In 1965 Mr.Chitnis suffered from a severe pain in the stomach and could not take even a spoonful of water. The doctor decided to try surgery on the next Thursday. Chitnis prayed that he should be spared the ordeal. That night in his dream four terrible persons were pulling him out of the bed. Sai Baba felled some of them and saved Chitinis. By morning Sri Chitnis was alright to the surprise of the doctor.

In Mahim, Bombay there was a large poor family of six. The head of the family was a clerk. Once he committed a serious blunder in the accounts, and feared dismissal. One of his friends, a devotee of sai Baba, heard of his anxiety and gave him udi and asked him to use it twice everyday and assured him that his difficulties would cease in a month or two. Shortly after, his mistake in accounts was discovered he could not face the situation. So he went on leave for a month and came home.

He was frightened by the prospect of dismissal and decided to commit suicide to end his sufferings one day he kissed his child wore an old shirt and went out. His wife knew of his distracted state of mind and knew that it was of no use preventing him from going out. So she called him back, gave him Sai Baba's udi and let him go. Then she sat before Baba's picture and went on praying fervently to him to save her husband's life.

Her husband who had left the house in the morning did not turn up even in the evening. He went to Borivelle in Bombay and jumped into a secluded tank. A fisherman rescued him and threatened to hand him over to the police if he did not return home. He gave a little money and left him at his house at 11p.m. The next minute the fisherman disappeared!

In 1956, a boy of sixteen was afflicted with polio of his legs. His mother took him to Shirdi and there she went round Baba's samadhi several times a day praying for her son's recovery. They boy was carried around the samadhi by a hired person. After a few days the boy felt it embarrassing and stayed back in their room and asked his mother to carry on her devotions. One day "Baba appeared before him physically, lifted him by the hand and led him to the samadhi mandir. There Baba told him to stand leaning against pillar. Then his mother was convinced of the miracle when she saw him walk along with her.

Sri Dileep Kumar Roy of Poona is a famous disciple of Sri Aurobindo and a great devotee of Lord Krishna. He has established the Hare Krishna Ashram in Poona and has been leading several seekers on the path of devotion. Several years ago a friend of him presented him with an idol of Sai Baba. Sri Dileep Kumar Roy had kept it along with several other idols in an open place in the ashram compound. That night Sai Baba. Appeared before him and said, "I am shivering in the cold. Take me inside the ashram and keep me in a comfortable place." Soon Sri Roy kept the idol of Baba inside the ashram and later kept it in a small shrine. This happened some fifty years after Baba's mahasamadhi.

Sri Devaraj of Coimbatore was a Captain of a ship during the Second World War. Once his ship was attacked by the enemy but he was rescued miraculously by Sai Baba. News of this miracle spread in Coimbatore and may were drawn to Sai Baba. Among these was Sri Soundara Rajan. He commenced the worship and bhajan of Sai Baba in house and he soon constructed a mandir for the public.

One evening a large gathering of devotees was engaged in bhajan. A huge cobra approached them and crept over the foot of a little boy. The boy cried in panic but the devotees remained calm. The snake stood within a few feet of the gathering and was swaying its hood in tune with their bhajan. People wondered why it was not scared by the large gathering. It stayed in the same place from 5 p.m. to 9.p.m. i.e., till the devotees dispersed for that night.

Next morning the devotees were surprised to find it in the same place. This convinced them that Sai Baba himself appeared in that form and they decided to worship it with all ceremony. They fetched several baskets full of chrysanthemum flowers. They all gathered around the snake and threw the flowers on it while chanting the 108 divine names of Sai. Even though flowers were thrown on it in thousands the cobra remained there calm and peaceful.

One of the devotees then prayed to it saying, "If you are indeed sai Baba, you please stay here till we fetch a photographer to take your picture for people may not believe when we tell hem that we had the good fortune of worshipping you inthis manner." It took nearly half an hour for the photographer to arrive and the cobra stayed there and was photographed. The picture taken on that occasion can be seen in the souvenir published by the Naga Sai Mandir at Coimbatore a few years ago. The Naga Sai Mandir which was built there at that spot is a memento of this leela of Baba.

Mankewala of Ahmedabad was laid up with dropsy and intestinal ulcer from 1948 to 1952. He felt it difficult even to drink water. His body weight had increased to 300 pounds and he used to spit blood on account of the ulcer. The doctors who examined him in 1952 had declared that he was sure to pass away in one or two day's time. In a mood of utter helplessness he started worshipping the picture of Baba that his friends had given him. At first he was not so happy to worship the 'moslem saint' which he thought Baba was. Yet Baba's form charmed his heart.

One day at 6 a.m., when he was lying awake in bed, Baba appeared before him and said, "I am not a fakir; I am the avatar of Lord Dattatreya. The same Lord is carrying on his divine mission assuming the different forms of Tajuddin Baba of Nagpur, Dhunivala Dada of Khandwa, Sri Vishnudevananda Saraswathi of Narmads, Sri Swami Samarth of Akkalkot and myself." Next morning his friend gave him two books on Sai Baba written in Gujarati.

A few days later doctors examined him and decided that he had only two more hours to live. As soon as they had left the room a mysterious light appeared in front of Mankewala. Behind it appeared Sai Baba! It was about one p.m. Baba said 'Son, do not fear! I have taken away all your sufferings". The wonder of its is that even the mother of Mankewala could see Baba. He then told them to send Mankewala's son to Shirdi and then walked out of the room.

Mankewala was worried whether his son could travel alone to Shirdi safely and, in case he dies, his son's presence was necessary to perform his obsequies. At last he decided to abide by Baba's words and so sent his son to Shirdi. At about 6 p.m., Baba again appeared to him and said," Do not fear! I am with your son. You will receive a telegram that he had reached Shirdi safely by 12 noon tomorrow."

A few minutes later the doctors again examined the patient and thought that he was dying. They mocked at his accounts of Baba's assurance. Indeed, nothing happened to Mankewala and the next day they received a telegram from Shirdi regarding his son's safe arrival there. For 24 hours precisely from the moment of the receipt of the telegram Mankewala passed excess of urin and suffered a severe attack of diarrhoea. Soon his body weight came down to 75 pounds. His pulse and heart beat were normal. The doctors agreed that his recovery was indeed a miracle of Sai Baba. Within the next two months Mankewala regained his normal health. On 23rd of August 1954 Sai Baba again appeared before him. Waving his baton( satka) playfully, he said, "I am always in front of my devotees".

Dear Sai Bandhus,

The following amazing experience is taken from 'Sri Sai Leelamritham by Acharya Shri E.Bharadwaja'.

Sri Seshachalam Pillay was a retired Tahsildar who lived at Tummalagunta village near Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh). On 1-11-1977 his wife Smt. Susilamma came to my (Acharya Shri E.Bharadwaja) house and recounted her experience of Sai Baba's grace.

In 1952 the family was staying at Narsingpur near Chandragiri(near Tirupati) Railway station. Even several years after marriage they had no children and all their relations were pressing Sri Pillay to marry a second time. One day her elder brother gave Smt.Susilamma a small picture of Baba and told her to worship it and said that Baba might bless her with an offspring. She started doing accordingly and in 1954 she was blessed with a son whom they named after Sai Baba.

When the child was eleven months old, it had fever and the mother suffered from severe diarrhoea. All medical aid proved futile and even after living on a diet of arrow-root powder for 21 days she could not go out of her room to answer even nature's calls.

On the 21st day at 4.30 a.m., she had an urge to pass stool, She got down from the cost, sat down just by for the purpose and, reclining her head against the cot, she prayed to Baba to help her. She at once saw Sai Baba entering the room pushing open the main door! He came and sat on the cot just by her head. She complained to him of her miserable plight. Baba said, "Why feel so bad about it? I have kept a talisman in that shelf. You wear it and you will be alright. Throw it off on the third day", and he at once walked out of the room. "Baba, in which shelf do you mean?" she was crying.

Her relations woke up at her cries and asked her what the matter was. When she told them of Baba's words, they brushed it aside as a mere delusion. When she insisted, they searched in the shelf and they did find a talisman with a yellow thread attached to it. They put it around her neck and at once her diarrhoea subsided. On the third day she threw the talisman away in the backyard in a corner. Sri Pillay blamed her for throwing away a thing given by Sai Baba and searched for it in vain. Both Smt. And Sri Pillay sat dejected at not finding it and they even went without lunch. By 6 p.m. her elder brother came and said that she was right in following Baba's instruction to throw away the talisman and that even if she had not done so, Baba could nave taken it away as mysteriously as he had given it.

This miracle strengthened their faith and they worshipped Baba with great favour. But the younger brother and nephew of Smt. Susilamma used to criticise her for worshipping a 'moslem' like Baba. One day when they sat in the hall, something metallic fell from nowhere, with a noise and they found it to be a picture of Baba printed on a metal strip. Smt. Susilamma picked it up, thought that it was a gift from Baba to her child and, after offering incense to it, put it round his neck.

The same night her youngest brother and nephew suffered from sudden and unbearable pain in stomach and diarrhoea. Smt. Susilamma told Sri Pillay that both of them spoke light of Baba as a Moslem and the illness might be a consequence of that. Sri Pillay reprimanded them for their impertinence and told them to prostrate to Baba's picture in repentance and to promise that they were relieved of their suffering and that they would name their first born after Baba.

As soon as they did so the pain at once vanished. Thus both of them became devotees of Sai and later named their first born after Baba.

Once, one boy aged 16 years related Smt. Susilamma was admanat to get married though Smt.Susilamma and Sh.Pillay tried to convince him that it was not the age for marriage. In a haste, that boy consumed poison and was admitted to a hospital. All the other realtives blamed Smt. Susilamma that she should be held resposible if the boy was dead. By Baba's Grace, the boy survived and admitted his mistake and all the relatives understood that Smt.Susilamma was innocent and only a well wisher of the boy.

Just before Sh.Pillay retired, their son(who was a prasad of Baba) was staying in Thummalagunta (A.P.) in their relatives place trying for  a job (after he completed his M.Sc.). He got a job offer from
Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati. Though her son refused to apply for the job stating there may be recommendaitions, Smt.Susilamma forced him to apply which he did and attended the interview. On 24.08.76, Sai gave a Swapna Darshan to Smt.Susilamma and told"your son's posting orders have arrived to Tummalagunta. Arrange to get them and ask him to join". He repeated this twice, thrice. Sh.Pillay wrote to their relatives. Actually, thier relatives in Tummala gunta went to SriKalahasti on a tour. So the house was locked. Baba again appeared in the dream and confirmed the same news to Smt.Susilamma. After they reached Tummlagunta, they found all the letters and gave a telegram to the son of Smt.Susilamma to immediately go and join the duty. Thus, Baba has provided a job to their son before Sh.Pillay retired.

Smt. Susilamma was suffering from problems of eye sight which was merely due to age advancement. She felt bad for that but, Sai gave her another Swapna(dream) Darshan and told her that "Karma has to be undergone and there is no other go. However, tell me you want to under go this birth or next birth". Before she could reply, she woke up. Again when she was suffering from some other problems, Baba again came into her dream and told her to chant the following sloka:

"Sri Rama Rama Ramethi Rame Raame Manorame,
Sahasra Naama Thattulayam Rama Nama Varanane!"

In the month of March 1978, She underwent an eye surgery and after she was discharged, she was sleeping on the terrace and one bat pulled out her operated eye. She started screaming, crying in pain and was rushed to the doctor the next day. The doctor has confirmed that it is impossible for her to get that eye back since the bat pulled out with minute blood vessels and nerves. She repeatedly requested them to admit her in the hospital and make their trials. So they allowed her in the hospital for 4 days.

On the last day night, Sai again came into her dream and opened the bandage; gave her thirtham and made her chant the above Sloka "Sri Rama..." and asked her "Are you able to see ?". She replied "Yes. Baba ! But, now I am old. I may not live much. Any way, as you told me I may have to undergo my Karma in my next birth. So I am worried". Then Baba shouted at her saying "With you I have all problems only. If I give you vision it is problem and If not also problem"...He shouted and continued "You feed as many blind peopl as possible and help them to the extent possible. Break ten coconuts in the temple for the God. That Karma will vanish on its own". There ended the dream.

The next day, the doctors opened the bandage and IMPOSSIBLE became POSSIBLE. She could see. The doctors were under great Shock and accepted that it is nothing but, Baba's grace only.

THUS, BABA HAS SHOWERED PROGENY, HEALTH, LIVELIHOOD, PROTECTING FROM ALLEGATION / OFFENCE AND KARMA NIVRITTI TO Smt. Susilamma.

Let Baba make our love and devotion stronger and stronger AND shower his greatest blessings on us too.

After Baba's mahasamadhi, shama kept a packet of udi received from him in his shrine. Once when he went to Bombay, one night Baba appeared in his dream and said, "Shama, the packet of udi which I had given you is now lying in the dustbin by the side of your house. Go home at once and restore it." Shama rushed home and looked for the packet in his shrine but it was not there! As the house was under repairs, all the articles in his house were removed and in the process, the packet was missing. Shyama searched for it outside and lo, it was in the dustbin. Thus Baba's appearance even in a dream, is significant.

Smt. and Sri S.N. Pradhan of Bombay (Santha Cruz) were devotees of Sai Baba. Once they were financially hard-pressed and felt that Baba did not grace them with any experience. After reading the life history of Baba they wanted to visit Shirdi but Mr. Pradhan was ill.

On 10-11-1953 before going to bed he fervently prayed to Baba to take him to Shirdi. He felt the inner call too. The next morning, while preparing chapathis, his wife noticed that footprints of Sai Baba were present, mysteriously impressed on the lid of the butter-can. Soon their neighbour who wasn't a devotee of Baba told them that he had a dream on the previous night; "That fakir in that photo in Pradhan's house" came to his house but he drove the fakir out; the fakir then entered Pradhan's house.

This corroborated the fact that Baba did visit Pradhan's house in his subtle form. So, too Baba's footprints appeared in the house of a Sai devotee, Tejaswini Rele. Later Baba appeared to her in a dream and told her that he had granted her in a dream and told her that he had granted her wish to see his footprints.

We shall now note an instance which shows that when a devotee invokes the name of Baba in distress, it could mean the invocation of some other saint. One Mr.R.Morewallah, solicitor of Bombay was going to Thana by train. Owing to crowding he could not board the train properly. The train moved and he slipped and fell down. In fright he cried out "Sai"! An old man pulled the chain and held him securely. The train stopped. The railway guard came to enquire but the old man was nowhere to be seen. Later when Morewallah's son visited a saint, the latter said. "Had I not saved your father's life in 1953?"

She could not sing even for a short while. She visited Shirdi and prayed to Baba at the samadhi mandir. When she later returned to her room she felt a rustling in her sari. When she looked it up, she found that it was a packet of homeopathic tablets. She took the same as Baba's prasad and soon her throat was cleared!

Sh.D. Sriramulu was in acute financial crisis when his wife was seriously ill and he had to attend to his four young children. Every day he fervently sought Baba's help. One morning, as he set out, Sai Baba appeared physically at the threshold. To make sure,

Sriramulu enquired in amazement, "Who are you"?
"What a fool you are! You'll know it only if you know who you are!", said Baba.
"Be pleased to dine with us!", Sriramulu said,
"I've come for that!", the visitor replied and added,
"Tell your wife to serve me food!"

The poor housewife got down from the bed and, with great difficulty, came crawling and  served him.
When Sriramulu returned from the bazar with bananas, Baba had left.
Within hours, his wife was quite well! Baba has ever after favoured her with his blessings.

Once she felt sorry for losing a good picture of Sai when she was traveling in a bus. That night, Sai appeared in her dream. Threw many of his pictures at her and told her to pick up whichever she liked and she did. The next morning, a devotee just returned from Shirdi and presented her with a like one!

One evening, Mr. Pathak, the former Court Receiver of Sri Sai Samsthanam Shirdi, received and urgent message that 600 devotees were visiting Shirdi that night. He needed Rs.1,200/- to make boarding arrangements for them but by that time , the day's collections of the Samsthan funds were already deposited in the treasury.

When he was worried about it, two villagers entered his office and said that they wanted to pay Rs.600/- to the office for feeding devotees. He told them to see him the next morning as the office was closed and no payments could then be accepted. They said that they were in a hurry and requested him to accept their money and arrange for the feeding on the next morning. Mr. Pathak accepted it. One of them mentioned his name as Shirdikar (i.e., a native of Shirdi).

After they went away, Mr. Pathak remembered that he had not thanked them for their timely contribution and sent the office-peons to call them, but there were no such anywhere! Three days later, an old devotee of Baba, Dr. Ga****ar, came from Bombay and said to Mr. Pathak, "three days ago, I had a dream in which I saw Sai Baba and Abdul Baba enter your office and give you some money."

Dr. Rajagoplaachari (Nellore) was once presented with a picture of Baba by a friend. He got it framed and fixed it on the wall and forgot all about it.

One night, a fakir with boils all over his legs, appeared in his dream. Next morning, he casually glanced at Baba's picture and noticed that he was the fakir. The picture of Sai was eaten up by white ants, exactly up to its legs. The doctor realized that Sai is one with his picture and started worshipping it.

Mr. V. Narayana Rao of Hyderabad sums up his experience thus : "In may 1979, we came to know that Sri Bharadwaja Master was in Hyderabad. Our long cherished wish to meet him was at last fulfilled and I was pleasantly surprised to know that I knew him earlier as a teacher , when I studied, in an evening college – Viveka Vardhini college.

One day he suggested that all of us, devotees of Sai, should conduct a weekly spiritual gathering where we can read the life of Sai Baba and sing bhajans. We commenced the activity on the next Saturday in his company. We had the opportunity of meeting him every day as long as he was in the city and clear many of our doubts. He attended our second weekly gathering also.

My son-in-law who did not participate in the satsang , later narrated his experience as below :

“I was resting on a cot in the open front yard of our house. Suddenly I went into the house, peeped and looked at Sai Baba's picture there. At the bottom of the picture was printed his saying.

"If you look to me I look to you".

I mentally addressed sai, "How far is your statement true? I shall believe you only if I am blessed with an experience. Else, I shall consider this satsang as an absurdity."

Then I came into the bed room, stood in front of Baba's picture there and looked at his eyes. After two or three minutes I felt that the whole room was illuminated with a light of thousands of candlepower. My eyes dazzled and my body felt light, as though floating in the air, I felt something like an electric current passing through my body and I was afraid that I may fall down.

At once I addressed Baba mentally, 'Now I believe you. I shall take your darshan', and bowed to him. Immediately, I regained my normal state. The mystic current had left me even like the air from a pricked pubble. I believe that it was an experience bestowed on me by sai in response to my prayer. I only pray that all the members of our group should realize the full significance of such an experience."

Baba's protection was extended to dumb creatures also, even long after HIS mahasamadhi. About 1932 there was a breeding bull at Shirdi which was consecrated with the mark of atrident ( of Lord Siva) on its forehead.

Once when it damaged local gardens in course of its free grazing, all the bigwigs of Shirdi contributed Rs. 3/- each and, along with the money, sent it to a pound (or cattle-shed) at Yeola through one Bhikku Marvadi. Soon the latter returned to Shirdi and said that he had discharged his duty.

But Baba appeared in Apaji Patel's dream that night and told him, "Are you sleeping? I have been tied to the door of a butcher". Immediately he rushed to Yeola and was stunned to learn that the bull was in fact sold to a butcher for Rs.14/- It was discovered there in time, released and was kept at the pound.

An advocate from Boribandar, once started for Shirdi with Rs.100/- in his pocket. Unfortunately (of fortunately?) his pocket was picked and he had lost the money and his railway ticket.

Later on, opening the book the advocate found Rs.100/- in it. When he returned home he found his purse before Baba's picture in his family shrine! He soon went to Bombay but the old man's address could not be traced. The advocate kept the money he found in the book in his shrine for worship. Thereafter his financial condition improved considerably.

Sivashankar Dixit a devotee of Lord 'Dattatreya, despaired when he knew that he was suffering from tuberculosis.

I forgot to mention yesterday & the day before that Upausani Vaidya that used to be at Amravati is here & saw me soon after my arrival. We sat talking. He told me briefly his story since leaving Amravati, how he went to Gwalior state, how he purchased a village, how it became nonpaying, how he met a Mahatma, how he got ill, how he tried all remedies, applied to various Sadhus & Mahatmas, how finally Sayin Maharaj took him in hand, how he improved & is now under orders to stay here.

He has composed a stotra of Sayin Maharaj in Sanskrit. We all got up early and attended the Kakad-Arti. It is very edifying. I prayed, bathed & saw Sayin Maharaj go out, then again after he returned & once more in the afternoon. Sayin Maharaj looking at me said
"Ka Sarkar". Then he gave the general advise that I should live as God keeps me, & added that a man fond of his family has to bear many things & so on & told the story of a rich man who slaved till evening, cooked for himself and ate a very rough bread, all on account of a temporary difficulty.

We saw Sayin Maharaj again the evening & then sat in the verandah of the house built by Dixit. Two gentlemen from Bombay brought a Satar & playing on it said Bhajan. Mr Thosar whom I call Hazarat also sang very beautifully and Bhishma had his usual Bhajan. Time passed very pleasantly till midnight. Thosar is a very pleasant companion. I had a long talk with my son Balvant the Bombay men & others about contemplation &c &c.

Madhavarao Deshpande was here & fell asleep. I saw with my own eyes, & heard with my own ears what I only read about but never experienced that with every outgoing & in drawing breath of Madhavarao Deshpande comes the clear sound of "Sayin Nath Maharaj Sayin Nath Baba" . This sound is as clear as clear can be & when Madhavrao snores, the words can be heard even at a distance.

This is really wonderful & he is in deep sleep all the time.

I took my Hukka there and Sayin Maharaj had a smoke out of it. He looked wonderfully beautiful at Arti time, but dismissed every one very soon after it. He said he would come to dine with us. On returning to our lodging we learned that Mr Dixit's daughter who was ill passed away. The deceased dreamt a few days ago that Sayin Maharaj kept her under the Nim tree here. Sayin Maharaj also said yesterday that the girl was dead. We sat talking about the sad event. The child was only seven years old. I went & saw her mortal remains. They were very beautiful and the expression on her face, after death, was peculiarly charming. It reminded me of the pictures of Madonna that I saw in England.

The cremation took place behind our lodging. I attended the funeral & did not break fast until 4 P.M. Dixit bore the blow wonderfully well. His wife naturally broke down under grief. Every body sympathizes with her. In the evening I went to Chavadi to see Sayin Maharaj both at sunset and later on at Shejarti time. At night I, Madhavarao Deshpande Bhishma & others sat talking till late, all about Sayin Maharaj. Thosar got permission from Sayin Maharaj to return to Bombay. He will return tomorrow morning.

Last night I & my son Baba left by the 10.15 p.m. train as proposed. Purandare, Pathare, Dhaujisha, his woodman, Bapu & others came to the station to see us off and the first two brought flowers. I slept as soon as I got into my compartment though I was awakened often. We reached Manmad about 9 a.m. today and stayed at the railway station till nearly 1 p.m. I met one or two young men on the station staff who very kindly helped us with things.

One Haripant of Yeola also met us. In the train to Copargaon, we met an Englishman who appeared exceptionally good mannered and obliging. We reached Copargaon station about 2 p.m. hired two conveyances, one for things and the other for ourselves to travel in. Bhaskar Rao assisted us with tongas and gave us guavas to eat at his house and accompanied us to Shirdi which we reached about 4 p.m. We put up in the wada built for the convenience of people by Mr Chandkar.

The Sayin Saheb then said that he has not been well for the last two years & more, that he used to eat only barley cake & take a little water. He showed his foot and pointed to a small sore, said it was the string worm, that it was extracted but the string snapped & then it reappeared & so on. He said he heard that it would not be well with him till he went to his native town. He said he kept it in view but that was all, he cared more for his people than even for his own life. He said he found no rest as people troubled him. It could not be helped. Then he told us to withdraw which we did.

When I woke up I found her and was very much surprised. I requested her to go and from what she said I made out that she was insane. 1911, 11 December Monday
Shirdi

The prayer this morning was a very pleasant and after it I felt quite elevated. Then I sat explaining the first few verses of Panchadasi to Dattatreya Chitnis. He is a very nice man. Then we visited Sayin Maharaj both as he went out and after he returned. He gave me the chillam very often & grapes that RadhaKrishnabai presented. He gave grapes twice to my son Balvant.

In the afternoon I heard that he was cleaning the Masjid. So I did not attempt to go that side. All the people brought a deputation to Sayin Maharaj to get rid of the plague. He advised them to clean the roads, sweep the tombs and burning & burial ghats and to feed the poor. I spent the whole afternoon reading daily papers and talking to Chitnis & others. Upasani is composing something. In the evening we saw Sayin Maharaj near Chavadhi & again attended the Sheja-Arti, after which Chitnis his Engineer friend & another went away. I intend retiring early.

The Story of Padukas under the Neem Tree

A devotee of Akkalkot Maharaj by name Bhai Krishnaji Alibagkar worshipped the photo of Akkalkot Maharaj. He once thought of going to Akkalkot (Sholapur District), taking the darshana of the Padukas (foot-prints) of the Maharaj and offering his sincere worship there; but before he could go there, he got a vision in his dream.

Akkalkot Maharaj appeared in the vision and said to him - "Now Shirdi is my resting place, go there and offer your Worship." So Bhai changed his plan and came to Shirdi, worshipped Baba, stayed there for six months and was happy. As a reminiscence of this vision etc., he prepared the Padukas and installed them on an auspicious day of Shravan, Shaka 1834 (1912 A.D.) under the Neem tree with due ceremonies and formalities, conducted by Dada Kelkar and Upasani.

One Dixit Brahmin was appointed for worship, and the management was entrusted to devotee Sagun.

In 1834 Shaka (1912 A.D.) one Doctor Ramarao Kothare of Bombay came to Shirdi for Baba's darshana. His compounder; and his friend, Bhai Krishnaji Alibagkar, accompanied him. The compounder and Bhai became intimate with Sagun Meru Naik and G.K. Dixit. While discussing things, these persons thought that there must be some memorial of the fact of Sai Baba's first coming to Shirdi and sitting under the holy Neem tree.

They thought of installing Baba's Padukas there and were going to make them of some rough stones. Then Bhai's friend, the compounder, suggested that if this matter be made known to his master, Dr. Ramarao Kothare, who would prepare nice Padukas for this purpose.

The latter made many improvements, drew lotuses, flowers, conch, disc, man etc., and suggested that the following SHLOKA (verse) regarding Neem tree's great ness and Baba's Yogi powers be inscribed. The verse was as follows:

"Sada Nimbarvrikshasya mooladhiwasat,

Upasani's suggestions were accepted and carried out. The Padukas were made in Bombay and sent to Shirdi with the compounder. Baba said that they should be installed on the Pournima (15th) of Shravan. On that day at 11 a.m., G.K. Dixit brought them on his head from Khandoba's temple to the Dwarkamai (Masjid) in procession. Baba touched the Padukas, saying that these are the feet of the Lord and asked the people to instal them, under foot of the Neem tree.
A day before, one Parsi devotee of Bombay named Pastha Shet sent Rs.25/- by money order. Baba gave this sum for the installation of the Padhukas. The total expense of installation came up to Rs.100/- out of which Rs.75/- were collected by subscriptions. For the first 5 years, G.K. Dixit worshipped the Padukas daily and then this was done by Laxman Kacheshwar Jakhadi. In the first five years, Dr. Kothare sent Rs. 2 per month for lighting and he also sent the railing round the Padukas. The expense of bringing the railing from the station to Shirdi (Rs. 7-8-0) (presently Rs.7.50p) and roofing was paid by Sagun Meru Naik. Now, Jakhadi (Nana Pujari) does the worship and Sagun Meru Naik offers the naivaidya and lights the evening lamps.

The incumbent Maharaj of that place is here, Myself." Hearing this Bhai did not go to Akkalkot. He came to Shirdi off and on, after the installation of the Padukas.

Mr. B.V. Deo concluded that Hemadpant did not know these details. Had be known them, he would not have failed to depict them in his Sat-charita.

Baba Manifested Himself and Helped devotee

Baba manifested Himself and helped Shri Chandulal M. Mehta and his wife Smt. Manubai residing at Kadia KaveesWAr Pole, near Bala Hanuman House No. 579, Ahmedabad, Gujarat.....

In February 1953, my wife Smt. Manubai went to Sri Sai Baba Mandir at Therkanbhuvan along with her lady friends. Her friends told her that the Almighty Baba fulfils the wishes of the devotees irrespective of caste, colour or creed.

On the following Thursday, my wife went with our younger son Mukesh to the same Mandir with a coconut during the evening aarati. After the aarati, the temple pujari distributed prasad which was composed of different types of eatables. My wife received some groundnuts as prasad; but she was unhappy as some others got pedhas.

Thinking that pedhas were given to selected persons, she was returning home via Kaveeswar Pole Naka. On the way, an unknown person approached her with a bag in his hand saying, “Your husband has sent this prasad. Please keep it in your bag !” He then put the prasad in her bag and went away.

At that time, I was in the office. When I reached home, my wife told me about the prasad I sent through an unknown person. I was surprised as I knew nothing about it. We realised it was Baba’s leela to fulfil the wishes of my wife. We became devotees of Sai after this incident.

In 1948, I performed the marriage of my elder brother Shri Naveen M. Mehta for which I borrowed Rs. 50,000/-.

I was repaying the debt from my salary. Since he was not an earning member, nobody was willing to give their daughter in marriage to my elder brother and thus he was not married before me. My wife used to solve the crossword puzzle in the Gujarati news-paper Jansatta. In April 1953, she solved the puzzle no. 6 as usual.

At that time, I still had to repay a debt of Rs. 3,333/- out of the Rs. 50,000/- I had borrowed. By Baba’s grace my wife won a prize of Rs. 3,333/- in the puzzle. Nothing less, nothing more ! Was it not a miracle of Sri Sai Baba to relieve me from my debt ?

In the Bhadrapad month of 1953, the annual shraddh ceremony of my father and father-in-law came on the same day. As I had to attend the office, I could not visit my in-law’s house that day. My children were at school. At about 4 p.m., a man who perfectly resembled my father-in-law visited our house with a khaki coloured bag which he handed over to my wife and went away. The bag contained some raw vegetables, udi and Rs. 1.25/-.

When I came home, my wife gave me this news. I wondered, how my father-in-law who had died in 1950 in Jaipur could visit my house in Ahmedabad in 1953 ! Was it not the wonderful leela of Baba to fulfil my wishes ?

In 1954, I went to Shirdi with my family intending to stay for a day and return. But owing to heavy rains, I was forced to stay for three days in Shirdi. When I returned to Ahmedabad, I had the good fortune to meet His Holiness Sai Sharan Anand, Baba’s intimate devotee.

I used to visit him now and then and soon became his staunch devotee. My wife gave daily bhiksha (alms) to the Swamiji.

In 1958, when Swamiji had gone to Mumbai, my wife went to Shirdi via Dadar by herself. At the railway station, there was a big crowd and she was not in a state to get a seat. At that time, an old man came and asked her for her chaddar (bed-sheet).

Though she was in doubt initially, she eventually gave it to him. The old man disappeared into the crowd. After a while he returned as the train came into the station and told her to get into a particular compartment. When she obeyed, she found her chaddar there and the old man helped her to put in her luggage in the compartment.

When she turned towards the platform to pay him, he went away without asking for anything. Wasn’t it indeed a miracle of Baba to help her in her hour of need ?

In 1980, between the 10th and 15th of March, a man wearing a silk shirt and dhoti came and handed over a packet to my wife, sometime between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. My wife asked him to wait; but he went away without saying anything.

When she opened the packet, it contained four and a half railway reservation tickets from Ahmedabad to Manmad by Navjeevan Express with the names of all our family members. When I returned from the office, my wife handed them over to me. I was astonished to see them and upon inquiry at the railway station found them to be correct.

I was sure that it was none other than Baba Who had given them.
I asked His Holiness Sai Sharan Anandji. He advised me to proceed to Shirdi, as per Baba’s wish. Accordingly we went to Shirdi utilising the tickets upto Manmad.

Once again in 1981, between the 10th and 15th of March, a man came and threw a packet in our house between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. My father opened it and there were four and a half railway reservation tickets from Ahmedabad to Manmad as well as udi. We once again visited Shirdi, as per Baba’s wishes, utilising the tickets upto Manmad.

In 1982, for the third time, on 12th March, between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. a man like a rikshawala came and gave a packet to my wife and went away. When she opened it, she once again found four and a half reservation tickets from Ahmedabad to Manmad. We once again visited Shirdi by utilising the tickets upto Manmad.

On March 15, 1983, my wife and daughter went for darshan of the Samadhi of His Holiness Sai Sharan Anand, who had expired on 25th August, 1982. They offered prasad to the pujari (sevak) there. When he gave them prasad from a white plastic jar which was there, a packet came in his hand which he handed over to my wife.

When opened, it was found that there were four and a half railway reservation tickets from Ahmedabad to Manmad with the date of journey 30th April 1983. Mentioned this time, instead of my name, my son’s name was on one of the tickets viz. Nitin C. Mehta. I had utilised these tickets for the past three years i.e. in 1980, 1981, 1982. This time I decided to retain these tickets as Baba’s prasad and came to Shirdi on April 30, 1983 of my own accord.

The following tickets were preserved by me from March 15, 1983. Reservation tickets from Ahmedabad to Manmad by Navjeevan Express, compartment no. S13, seats from 55 to 59. Journey to commence on 30.4.1983.

Railway Railway Name Compartment
Reservation Fare No. S13
Ticket No. Ticket No. & Seat No.
1. 59083 3623 Nitin C. Mehta 55
2. 59084 3624 Manubai Mehta 56
3. 59085 3625 Vihangini Mehta 57
4. 59086 3626 Chaki@Anita Mehta 58
5. 59087 00453 child Baba (Rachit) 59

Dear readers, please think over the sort of help beloved Baba had given in this case.

BHIVPURI SAI TEMPLE - THE FIRST EVER SAI TEMPLE

Sri Sai Baba has become a part of the mainstream of Indian spiritual and temporal life within a short period of attaining mahasamadhi.

We can now see Sai temples not only in the big cities but also in small towns and villages of India, and more and more temples are being built. In this and subsequent issues we will investigate the details and stories behind these temples, built not only in this country but also abroad.

In this issue we will learn about the Sai temple built at Bhivpuri 1916, when Sri Sai Baba was still in his physical body.

Bhivpuri Road is a small railway station which comes before Karjat on the train route from Mumbai to Pune. If one gets out at this station and looks right towards the fields, a temple spire is clearly visible. This is the Sai temple at Bhivpuri. It is a short walk across the fields to the temple.

BHIVPURI TEMPLE - THE FIRST EVER SAI TEMPLE

This temple has a very interesting history. The story behind its construction reveals the astonishing manner in which Baba pulls his devotees to him. It is unbelievable but nevertheless true that the founder of the temple, the late Sri Keshav Ramachandra Pradhan, was initially an atheist. Sri Pradhan was working for a Parsee gentleman of Mumbai as a pedhi (a collector of debts owed to his employer). He lived in Bhivpuri and would commute to Mumbai to work. In the course of his job he would frequently go to Manmad, Nasik and Kopergaon.

Pradhan had a close friend who was a devotee of Sai Baba. He would often go to Shirdi and return after having darshan of (seeing) Sri Sai Baba. Once, Pradhan visited his friend when he was about to leave for Shirdi. He asked Pradhan to accompany him and to have Baba’s darshan. Pradhan, who had no belief in God or Godmen, initially refused to go with him. Finally, however, he gave in to his friend’s persuasion and agreed to go, but not to set foot inside the mosque where Baba lived. His friend accepted the compromise and they set out for Shirdi together. The friends reached Shirdi and stayed in the wada. As it was time for the noon arati, Pradhan’s friend went to the mosque but Pradhan stayed in the wada. The bell rang from the mosque for the arati and Pradhan could hear it from his room. The deep gongs of the bell stirred him as never before. He was enchanted by the sound and unknowingly started walking to the mosque from where this heavenly sound was issuing forth.
