Title: Nanasaheb Chandorkar's experiences with Sai baba
Post by: v2birit on May 05, 2010, 11:21:41 AM
Nanasaheb Chandorkar

Nana Chandorkar was one of Baba's most prominent devotees.

Born of well respected parents in Kalyan, Maharashtra, he rose at a young age to the post of Deputy Collector.

He had the distinction of being one of the very few disciples that Baba directly called to his side.

Baba was not normally enthralled with men of high position, but in Chandorkar's case he could see that there was an old

connection.

Being an orthodox Hindu slowed his progress under Baba's care, but once convinced of Baba's greatness,

he became one of the most ardent devotees who encouraged many others to come to Shirdi.

OMNIPRESENT NATURE OF SHRI SAI BABA

Sai Baba called Nanasaheb’s wife as ‘Aai’ (mother). However, in 1906, when she visited Baba, He said, “Welcome Aaji-bai (granny) !” She was amused by the new name. On reaching home, she narrated the incident to Nanasaheb. He immediately realized the significance of this and said, “Then our daughter Dwarka must have delivered a baby !” Very next day, the couple received a letter conveying the same news ! In Shirdi Baba had referred Nanasaheb’s wife as Aaji-bai, at the same time in Pandharpur, Nanasaheb’s daughter Dwarka had delivered a child.

Once, Nanasaheb suffered a boil on his back-side. It was very painful and moreover, the place was very embarrassing and awkward.
Nanasaheb consulted various doctors and Vaidyas; but to no avail. Ultimately, he was advised to get it removed through surgery at Mumbai.

Nanasaheb had firmly resolved in his mind – ‘It is not proper on my part to pray Baba for every trivial matter. I must not become burdensome for Him. This time I must not bother Him.’ Nanasaheb preferred to suffer from the pains created by the boil; but he did not pray to Baba to come to his rescue.

The date for the operation was fixed and on the appointed day he came to Mumbai. He was lying down on a cot. His sufferings began to increase. So much so that he felt that he will not come out alive from the ordeal. He kept Baba’s photograph near his pillow and looked forward to the doctor’s arrival.

Only 10-15 minutes were left for the surgeon to arrive. And, an unexpected event took place. As he was lying down with faced down, a small piece of tile from the roof fell down exactly on the boil and it burst open. Slowly the puss oozed and drained out of the boil and the pain started subsiding. When the surgeon arrived, he was also amazed at the turn of events. He declared that the operation was no longer necessary.

After a few days, Nanasaheb went to Shirdi. Baba said, “Even if one decides not to give me the trouble, ultimately I have to burst the boil with my own hands.”

IMPORTANCE OF (PROPER) NAAM JAP

As advised by Nanasaheb, his wife used to do Naam-jap regularly. Once, when she was sitting near Baba, He said, “My mother, you grind a lot of grains, but the outcome is useless.” She could not understand the meaning of this. On reaching their place of residence, she narrated the incident to Nanasaheb. He clarified “Baba is correct. You do a lot of Jap, but your attention moves to a hundred things. Along with Jap, Swarup-anusandhan  is also necessary. And this advice is not only for you but for all of us.”

NANA, WHERE AM I GOING ?

In 1912, Baba got seriously ill. At that time, Nanasaheb was nearby. He was worried about Baba’s condition and about chances of His coming out safely from the ailment. He, therefore, sent messages to all prominent devotees and called them to Shirdi. They began various religious rites such as Japa-japya, Anushthan, Ved-mantra-pathan, Laghu-rudra, Chandi-havan.

In spite of all this, one day Baba’s condition worsened. Every one thought that Baba is going to leave them. Devotees like Kakasaheb Dixit, Bapusaheb Jog, Balasaheb Bhate, Madhavrao Deshpande, Tatya Patil gathered together in Dixit Wada.

Some of them started discussing future course of action, in case something untoward happens. Some of them felt that they must take Baba’s opinion about whether His body should be taken to Darga or Wada. They felt that in the absence of clear directions from Baba in this regard, there is a likelyhood of a major dispute between Hindus and Muslims. But, who will ask such a question to Baba. Ultimately, this difficult task fell upon Nanasaheb. But, he also was reluctant to ask such a delicate and embarrassing question.

Just then, an amazing event took place. An unknown person came to Dixit Wada where these devotees had gathered together. He said, “Are you Nanasaheb ? Baba has sent a message. He said, ‘Do not discuss the issue of my death so soon. I am not going to die just now. But, continue the religious rites that you have begun. Don’t worry. Where am I going to go ?’ ”

Hearing these words, the devotees took pity on their own poor intelligence and limited wisdom. Tears of love and affection started flowing from their eyes.

UDDHARI SANKATI BHAKTANTE

(In times of perils, the Almighty comes to the rescue of His devotees)

From 1902, for some years, Nanasaheb  was the Mamledar of Jamner Taluka of Khandesh province. It is during this period that Baba gave him a miraculous experience at the time of pregnancy of Nanasaheb’s daughter Mainatai.

The doctors had predicted Mainatai’s delivery date to be in the early months of 1905. Nanasaheb had, therefore, brought her to Jamner from Pune. Finally, the time for delivery of the child arrived. Doctors and nurses were trying their best to help her in delivering the baby. However, their efforts were proved to be futile. Nanasaheb then resorted to invoking the blessings of the Almighty. He arranged to perform religious rites like Navachandi Havan, Saptashati Pathan etc. But, the child’s birth was not taking place. Even the life of the would-be mother was now at stake.

Then, at about 5 in the evening, as per his usual practice, Nanasaheb started fervently praying to Baba. While praying, a thought came to his mind - ‘If I get Baba’s Aarati and Udi, then even if the Lord Yam (God of death) comes himself, he will have to return empty handed.’

At the same time, here in Shirdi, Ramgeer Bua suddenly developed an urge to go to his native village in Khandesh area. He, therefore, went to Baba to seek His permission. Baba replied, “Bapugeer, you be rest assured. But, on the way, do go to Jamner. Stay with Nana and then proceed to your village. And one more thing - give him this Udi and this piece of paper of Aarati !” Baba instructed Shama (Madhavrao Deshpande) to copy down ‘Aarati Sai Baba’ (composed by Madhavrao Adkar) on a piece of paper and pass it on to Ramgeer Bua.

Ramgeer Bua said,  “Baba, I have only two rupees in my pocket. In that amount, how will I be able to undertake the journey to Jamner ?” Baba assured him,  “Don’t worry about it. Everything  will get arranged.” Satisfied, Ramgeer Bua took leave of Baba and set on the journey - carrying with him the Udi and paper of Aarati.

By the time he reached Jalgaon, he had spent one rupee and fourteen Anas on the train fare – leaving with him only two Anas. And, he had yet to cover a distance of about 44 kilometers between Jalgaon and Jamner. He was unable to think of any way out. Just then he spotted a sepoy at a far away spot. The man was searching for Ramgeer Bua ! He said, “Nanasaheb has sent me to fetch you. He is anxiously waiting for you. Let us not waste any more time.” Hearing this Ramgeer Bua was overjoyed. His worries over, he immediately sat in Tonga brought by the man.

From the type of moustache, beard and clothes worn by the sepoy, he appeared to be a Muslim. The duo travelled through out the night. In early hours of the morning, the sepoy halted the Tonga by the side of a stream to give rest to its horse. He fetched water from the stream and took out some snacks. Ramgeer Bua was worried about eating food from the hands of a ‘Muslim’. But, the sepoy immediately resolved the issue and clarified that he is a ‘Kshatriya Rajput’. They shared the food and set on to complete the remaining journey.

On entering the town, Bua located Nanasaheb’s office. He rushed inside as he had to answer call of nature. On returning, he found that the sepoy, the Tonga and the horses were nowhere to be seen ! Bua was surprised. He again went back inside the office. There he came to know that Nanasaheb was at home only.

Bua met Nana. At that time, the religious rites (Havan, Yadnya, Pathan etc.) were going on. Bua gave Nana the Udi and paper of Aarati. On seeing these, Nanasaheb felt relieved - In spite of the difficult circumstances prevailing around him at that time. He immediately called his wife and asked her to feed the Udi through water to Mainatai and he himself began reciting the Aarati. The moment the Udi entered her stomach, Mainatai’s pains began subsiding and in due course she delivered the baby. Everyone around heaved a sigh of relief.

Bua now enquired with Nana, “I don’t see the Tongevala you had sent to fetch me. Where is he ?” Nanasaheb got confused. He replied, “I did not send anyone. No one here knew that you were coming. Then, where is the question of sending some one to fetch you ?” Bua narrated in detailed the story from its very beginning. On hearing it, Nanasaheb was stunned and moved. Tears started streaming from his eyes.

Unfortunately, the child delivered by Mainatai did not live long. Mainatai had lost her husband just before the birth of the child due to the epidemic of plague. This second death was a tremendous blow to the family. In a disheartened mood, Nanasaheb went to Shirdi along with his wife. He sat at the feet of Shri Sai Baba. But, he realized that Baba is not paying His usual attention to him. Nanasaheb was restless on noticing that Baba had not even asked His question enquiring about his wellbeing. Ultimately, he could not hold back himself any longer and asked Baba, “We are always under the shelter of Your blessings. Even then, we are facing so many hardships and unfortunate calamities. What shall we do ?”

The advice that Baba imparted on this is worth pondering on.

He said, “Nana, if you were coming to me only to save the lives of your son-in-law and grandson, then it is your mistake. Don’t come to me for such reasons. Because, I don’t have control over birth and death. They are dependent on the deeds of your earlier births. Even the Almighty God does not interfere in the matters. Will He ask the sun or the moon to change the times of their rising or setting ? He cannot do it and He will not do it. Because, it will create a chaos in the Universe.” Nana then asked, “ Then, how do you predict, what is going to happen in future ?” Baba gave clarification about the ‘miracles’ that He performed. He said,

“Nana, I don’t perform miracles. Only I am able to look into the future events and I narrate them to you. You feel that these are miracles. When I predict such events, you direct your devotion towards me. I redirect it to the Almighty and ensure your welfare.”
This shows, how concerned Baba was about wellbeing of His devotees !

When the Bhakta is Param Yogya (deserving), the Almighty showers His blessings incessantly. Baba did everything for Nanasaheb. This leaves no doubts about Nanasaheb’s credentials as a ‘Param Yogya Bhakta’.

IMPORTANCE OF (PROPER) NAAM JAP

Along with Jap, Swarup-anusandhan  is also necessary.

Om Sai Ram.

v2birit ji, kindly translate 'swarup-anusandhan' for me. Does it mean meditation on form?

Dear bhakta Drashta Ji,
I beleive Sai baba is asking this question, making you as the cause, so that it gets firmly inscribed in mind.
    You guessed it correct.
swarup - name, form, features, divine glories
anusandhan - attention, giving the Chitta or intellect

Hence 'swarup-anusandhan' should mean remembering the name, form & glories of the Lord, while the mouth does the Japa. In this way Mind, intellect & body all become one & tend to merge in the Lord, the result being that the Individuality is Lost & you become same as the Lord.

Om Sai Ram.

Faith in Nana

Baba once said to Nanasaheb, “If you ask me to give you some worldly possessions, then I will not be able to give them to you. You will get them as per the deeds committed by you in your previous births. However, if you want me to guide you on the path of Parmartha, I will do so.” With great joy, Nanasaheb agreed to this and he vowed to devote himself to Parseva (service of others) and through it achieve his self-progress. This is known as Bhagwat Dharma which was always propagated by Baba.

Staunch opposition to pompous show

The flow of devotees kept on increasing incessantly. In their enthusiasm, the visiting devotees as well as some people around Baba even forgot His simple way of life and began pouring various articles at Baba’s feet. Some things were even ordered from outside by the people surrounding Baba. They forgot that Baba never had any use for such things.

Gradually, Shirdi started becoming a Sansthan (a princely state). Nanasaheb knew that this was detrimental to the path of Parmarth. He was very much disturbed by the transformation of simple Pooja and Arati into a pompous show.

Nanasaheb was instrumental in bringing devotees like Balasaheb Deo, Tatyasaheb Nulkar and others to Baba. A substantial correspondence was exchanged between Nanasaheb and Nulkar. In the letters, time and again Nulkar has expressed his eternal gratitude towards Nanasaheb for taking him to Baba.

In his letter dated 16th November 1910, he poured out his anguish to Tatyasaheb.

Thane 16-11-1910

Dear Tatyasaheb,

My Sashtang Namaskar to Shri Gururaj Saimauli and also to Bapusaheb (Jog) and both Madhavraos (Deshpande and Adkar).

I wonder, what is the purpose is served in the daily Pooja by articles like Morchel (a brush of peacock feathers), Chavari (a fly whisker), Chhadi (a wooden stick / staff). ‘Pooja’ is to be performed with self-less devotion. It is true that Shri (Sai Baba) reluctantly gives His permission. But, we devotees are losing a lot through such a ritual. His blessings are being wasted on such futile matters. He is a Kalpataru (a Tree which fulfils any desire). He satisfies the desires of anyone who goes to His feet. But, it is not proper to become His devotee with the sole intention of fulfilling one’s desires. Those who make rich offerings with a view to achieve their desires create ill-will in the minds of those devotees who are unable to make such offerings.

Shri does not need such a display of wealth. On the day of Tulshi Vivah, Shri was furious. This was a clear indication that He does not like such things.

I do not care for others. But, as you are my close friend, I am taking the liberty of cautioning you in participating in such rites. Rest when we meet.

Yours,

N. G. Chandorkar

In the years after 1910, there was a considerable increase in the number of devotees of Baba and Baba also changed His ways of communicating with the people. He began talking in a profound ways which needed to be interpreted by someone. In spite of His preachings, the devotees continued to remain attracted to the worldly ways of life. On seeing this, Baba was disappointed and had tears in His eyes. He said to Nanasaheb, “Nana, I am here to give something much more important to my devotees; but no one wants it. They all want from me what I cannot give them.”

Sri Sai Baba's leelas are wonderful and beautiful. He appears as Siva to the devotees of Siva, as Vishnu to the devotees of Vishnu and as Parvardhigar to the Muslim devotees. One the one hand he would look like the Panduranga Vittala standing on a brick and on the other he would look like Sai Baba. His love for his devotees was limitless.

Baba had with him an old well baked brick with him. He used to love that brick more than he did his life. He would use it every day as his pillow when he slept. Nanasaheb Chandorkar saw this and said, "Baba why do you use that brick as a pillow? I will have a nice pillow stitched for you. Please throw that brick away." Baba then replied, "Even if you bring a hundred thousand pillows they will not equal this brick. This was presented to me by my Guru. This is more valuable that the whole world to me. This is my meditation as well as the object of my meditation. Nobody can estimate its value. It is breaks; my life will depart this body. My guru's feet had touched this brick; that is why I have made it my pillow. He who keeps his head on the lotus like feet of his guru; his shadow is also holy. That is why I keep my head on this brick which touched my guru's lotus feet. By this I am becoming one who every day keeps his head on his Gurus feet. Nana! You all come and salute me in the mornings. I in turn present all your salutes to my guru. In the manner that the Godavari River takes all the water that joins it and consigns it to the sea, in the same way I consign your salutes to my guru. When I had put this brick at the feet of my guru, my guru who loved me as a mother did her child, laughed with pleasure at my devotion. He said, 'Well done. In the past Pundaleeka had presented Krishna a brick and asked him to stand on that. Now you are doing me same thing and asking me to put my feet on that. By the dint of the excellence of your devotion, I have to stand steadily on this brick forever.

What body is in samadhi, the same body will also be in this brick.' This is the truth. My Sadguru had commingled with Lord Sri Venkateswara and had become Venkateswara himself. He is now in the form of Lord Venkateswara. Sri Venkateswara's footprints are on this brick. That is why I call my guru Venkusa (Venkateswara Swamy). The power of this brick is beyond compare. Have you now seen what it is?" Nanasaheb Chandorkar and the other devotees heard Baba and prostrated at his feet in devotion. Chandorkar was an ardent devotee of Sri Sai Baba. He died in the holy Sravana month in 1923 at Poona and reached the holy feet of Sri Sai Baba. I prostrate before Chandorkar.

Ratanji saheb belonged to Nanded. Once he started for Shirdi along with his family for the darsan of Sri Sai Baba. Ratanji was a gentle, cultured soul and had great devotion towards Sai Baba. He was a Parsi. His happiness knew no bounds on the day that he was to start for Shirdi. On that day he called his friends for a tea party to his house at about four or five in the evening. Ratanji had many friends. The pride of wealth or arrogance was not present in the least in Ratanji. His friends are also not from a single caste or religion. Some were Brahmins, some Vaisyas, some were of the weaver class while some were of the warrior caste. Some were Parsis while some were Mohammedans. But in that group there is not a trace of hatred or bigotry based on caste or creed. That band of friends was a garden where jasmines and roses were flowering at the same time. Where the perfume of mutual respect and love was in abundance there is no place for the stench of fanaticism based on caste or creed. Not only this, by the mixture of the fragrances of the various castes and creeds meeting in an atmosphere of mutual love and affection; that meeting of good people (Satsangam) expressed a fragrance of its own which extended its influence outwards.

The earth is the place where all the various varieties of flowers bloom. That earth gives birth to and nourishes all varieties of flowers. In the same way the almighty gives birth to and nourishes all the various castes, creeds and nationalities. But the tragedy of today is that not only the various creeds are fighting with each other in hatred, but the split and splintered society of Hindus are also fighting with greater hatred between the various castes. They are not hesitating to destroy one another's wealth, woman or lives.

BABA HELPED SHRI NANASAHEB CHANDORKAR BY PERMITTING HIM BY HIS FATHER TO HAVE BABA AS HIS GURU

Sri Nanasaheb Chandorkar got into a fix in certain family matters. His father Govind Rao Chandorkar was also a Deputy Collector like his son and stayed in a house built by himself at Kalyan.

Lately some unpleasantness had grown between him and the local musalmans and so he had ordered all the members of his family to desist from having any connection whatsoever with musalmans in general.

When Nanasaheb happended to return home, he was informed of what had happened and his father's standing order about having no musalman connections. Nana was puzzled. He was prepared to give up all connections with Musalmans, but he was not prepared to disassociate himself from Baba. If his father took Baba to be a Musalman naturally he would expect Nana to give up Sai Baba. This embrassed Nana So he spoke to his father about his connection with Sai Baba.

In the meanwhile Baba had already given proper turn to his father's mind in the matter. So at once he said to Nana "My Guru is Sakkaram Maharaj" but your Guru is not Sakkaram Maharaj. So even if Shri Sai Baba may really be a Mohamadan He is your Guru and you may most willingly continue to Him without the least objection from me". On hearing this Nana saheb was overjoyed and heartily thanked Baba for the happy solution of the puzzle he had to face.

Surrender Shri Sai Completely // Stupendous Delectation and Deliverance be there //

Shirdi Sai Baba appears as a beggar

We are human beings. Our mind is surprised by the various deeds of the saints. But the saints consider all their deeds as normal. The things which are beyond our understanding and reach, we called them as miracles. Saints do these miracles in their ordinary course of deals. So it is not a miracle for them. Moreover we are simple, ignorant and greedy humans. That's why it is not possible for us to understand the Leelas of Sai Baba in one stroke. The Updesh which were given by Him are not difficult to remember, but difficult to follow. Here is such an incident Nanasaheb Chandorkar which shows how he forgot the teachings of Sai Baba and how Sai Baba taught him a lesson.

Nanasaheb Chandorkar used to spend his holidays in his house at Kalyan. Whenever Nanasaheb and his family went there to spend holidays, the ladies in the house would prepare various types of snacks in the free time at afternoon.

Once during his holidays, Nanasaheb was taking rest after having lunch on one afternoon. His daughter-in-law was making Bhajniya (a snack prepared from either wheat flour or rice flour, spices and are made in circular form commonly called “Chakri” in Marathi and “Chakli” in Gujarati). Just then a beggar wearing torn dirty clothes with came and stood at the door.

There was threshold in front of the house. The house was inside the threshold. The beggar crossed the threshold and stood in front of the door and asked for food. Nanasaheb’s kind daughter-in-law took a handful of the Bhajniya and gave to the beggar. But the beggar was not satisfied and so she demanded more. Nanasaheb’s daughter-in-law took some more Bhajniya and gave to the beggar.
This time too the beggar was not satisfied.

Nanasaheb’s daughter-in-law said, “I have given you half of Bhajniya prepared for us to you. Then also you are not satisfied?”

The beggar again seemed to be unsatisfied and said, “I will go only after you give all them”.

Nanasaheb’s daughter-in-law said angrily, “You have to eat by getting the food from others and you are troubling us in this way. If want the food take whatever quantity is given to you and just go away. Now I will not give more than what I have offered.”

The beggar did not listen to daughter-in-law. Neither she took the Bhajniya nor did she return. The daughter-in-law being fed up now called up Nanasaheb. Nanasaheb ordered his watchman, “If the beggar accepts the quantity which we are giving, then its ok, otherwise push her outside of the house”.

The beggar said, “Sir, if you don’t intend to give don’t give but don’t push me out of the house. I will go on my own”. Thus the beggar went away without taking a single Bhajniya.

Nanasaheb’s holidays were over. He had to join his office again. In the way he went to Shirdi to take darshan of Sai Baba. Sai Baba was very angry with Nanasaheb. The moment Sai Baba saw him; He turned His face on the other side. He did not speak a word too. Nanasaheb went near to Sai Baba and fell at His feet.

Nanasaheb said, “O God, please tell if I have made any mistake”.

Sai Baba said, “What should I say to the one who does not follow the path directed by Me? You had thrown that beggar out of your house through that watchman. Did she do any harm to you, that you were ready to push her? If she wanted whatever you gave her, she would have taken, and if not she would have sat on the threshold of your house for sometime and would have went away. What harm was that to you, was she looting away your wealth or position? Instead of listening to her sweet words, you called your watchman to throw her out of your house. Is this that I have taught you?

Nanasaheb was then reminded of his mistake now. He repented for it and promised that he would never commit such mistake ever. Though Sai Baba is sitting in Shirdi, but He went to His devotees in any form to save them.

Athithi Devo Bhava - Practically shown by Shirdi Sai Baba

Nanasaheb Chandorkar was a strict devotee. He observed all rituals. It was his practice that he gave offering first to Agni Dev (i.e. God of fire), then he waited for some guest to come and served him food. After that only he took his meals. He used to read many sacred books. During one of his reading, he came across a story of Seth Sagaalsha. No guest came to the house of Seth Sagaalsha for many days, so he had to observe fast, as it was his practice to take his lunch after feeding some guests.

After reading the above incident, a doubt aroused in Nanasaheb’s mind regarding such principles written in Shastras. He thought that if such things are difficult to follow do Shastras comply to follow them? Sai Baba knows all Shastras and so my doubts would be clarified by Him only. so I must leave the matter to Him.

One day when Nanasaheb sat massaging Sai Baba’s legs in Dwarkamai, Sai Baba Himself started speaking. He said, ‘Nana! All the Shastras are correct. Shastras never speak useless things, and not even impure things. The definition of human may be different, the thoughts of human may be narrow, but it cannot be said that Shastras are useless. Guests would surely come!

Nanasaheb was not reminded that Sai Baba is clearing his doubt regarding Seth Sagaalsha which aroused while reading.

Sai Baba further explained, 'Can a man of three and half cubits can only be your guest? Can other living beings can’t be your guests? Just see here and there. You will find many hungry living beings ready to eat the food given by you. Crores of living beings like ants, housefly, crow, dog, goat, cow, rat, etc. roam near you to satisfy their hunger, so are they not your guests? So if you give them a dish full of eatables, they would consume it with love. After satisfying their hunger, those dumb animals will give you blessings and in turn God will be happy with you.'

So dear readers, whosoever comes to us for satisfying its hunger, we must be ever ready to do so. Sai Baba had said that satisfying one's hunger is equal to doing a Yagna. Simplifying further Sai Baba compared hunger with Yagna and thus it means if we satisfy one's hunger, we would get blessings and Punya of doing a Yagna. What a simple method our beloved Sai has given us!

Sai Baba imparted Practical Teachings to His Devotees

Nanasaheb Chandorkar went to Baba. After doing Pranipat (salutation), he placed Badam (almond) and Khadi Sakar (sugar candy) as Prasad. Baba immediately distributed it amongst the people who were present. Nanasaheb was curious to know the reason for Baba's calling him and asked, "Baba, why did You call me?" Baba replied, "Are, there are many Nanas in the world. When I called you specifically, there must be a reason for it. Isn't it?"

Nansaheb was forthright in speaking. He said, "Then, tell me the reason !" Baba replied, "Are, we have relations spanning over four births. You do not know this; but I am aware of it. Therefore, I have been repeatedly calling you! Whenever you have time, do make it a post to come."

Ok. I will come." Nanasaheb bowed before Baba and departed. Even after seeing the miracle of Annapoorna Siddhi, Nansaheb had not developed faith in Baba.

A few days after the above incident, there was an onset of epidemic of plague of Nagar district. The government had introduced a vaccine to counter the illness. But, in those days, people thought that taking the injection was akin to inviting the disease. No one was willing to come forward. Therefore, the collector asked Nanasaheb to set an example before the masses and take the injection himself. But, Nansaheb's thinking was no different than the others. He was reluctant to take the vaccine.

Ultimately, he decided to seek Baba’s advice. He requested the collector to grant him a week’s leave to take decision about the injection and set himself on the path to Shirdi. He posed his dilemma before Baba. Baba replied very casually, "There is nothing to it. Don’t be scared. Take the injection. It will not harm you."

After the incident concerning inoculation, Nanasaheb realized that Baba had a different kind of aura around Him. Therefore, Nanasaheb’s faith in Baba became more steadfast. He started feeling that he should go more frequently to take Baba’s Darshan. He intensely desired that he should incessantly have thoughts about Baba. But, his office and family matters allowed him little time for anything else. And he was sad.

Once, he was sitting near Baba and Baba gave him an excellent way of overcoming the problem. Baba said, “You want that you should have my thoughts through out the day - Isn’t it ? Then try to see me in the smallest of the things.” Nanasaheb failed to get the point.

Then Baba clarified, "Nana, when you see a vegetable, think that it is my creation. This way see me in each and everything that comes before you." How simple was the remedy suggested by Baba !

Once, Baba posed a question to Nana, “Which is one of the Shadripu (six vices of human nature) is easier to conquer ?” Nanasaheb replied, "Very difficult to answer that question.” Baba said, “It is jealousy ! It means not being able to digest the progress of others. It is very easy to win over jealousy. Because, by being jealous, we neither gain nor lose. A person earns wealth and well-being because of his good deeds. Therefore, if someone prospers, it is due to his good deeds and what do we lose ? And so, one must win over the bad quality of being jealous."

Nanasaheb prostrated before Baba and agreed, "From today, I will try not to be jealous."

Feelings of Nanasaheb Chandorkar - Shirdi Sai Baba Poem

Following are feelings of an ardent devotee of Sai Baba Shri Nanasaheb Chandorkar.

Ek Baar Punah Apne Paas Bitha Lo
Mujhe Apne Hriday Se Laga Lo,
Rinanubandho Mein Uljha Tha
Lekin Maine Tumko Paya Tha
Tumne Bhi Mujhe Gale Lagaya Tha
Is Sansaar Ka Niyam Samjhaya Tha,
Janam-Mrityu Ka Khel Bataya Tha,
Tumne 'Pranipaat' Ka Arth Samjhaya
Gyan-Agyan Ka Bhed Bataya,
Wo Hi To Ant Samay Tak
Mere Kaam Aaya...
Maine Bhi Tumhare Vichaaron
Ka Khoob Aanand Uthaya
Ghar-Ghar Jakar
Logon Ko
Tumhari Leelaon Ka Raswadan Karaya
Jisne SaiNath, Aaj Tak
Meri Rooh Ko Aaram Pahuchaya
Jab Koi Tumhara Naam Leta Hai
Pata Nahin
Mujhe Bhi Kuch-Kuch Hota Hai,
Shayad Yeh Tumhara Pyar Hai
Jo Mujhe Abhi Bhi Shirdi Bulata Hai
Tumhari Dwarkamai Dekh
Mujhe Hasata Hai, Rulata Hai
Mujhe Purane Dino
Ki Yaad Dilata Hai
Baba...! Ek Baar Punah
Apne Paas Bitha Lo
Mujhe Apne Hriday Se Laga Lo...

Dear Baba, please make me sit beside You once again and hug me. I was caught up in tangles of relations of past births. But i got You and You hugged me. You explained me rules of the world and sports of life and death. You explained the meaning of 'Pranipat' and gave me meaning of ignorance of the differences. That only helped me till my end. I also enjoyed a lot of Your ideas. I went from home to home singing Your glory. This gave so much of happiness to my soul. Whenever someone took Your name, my heart has strange feeling. Perhaps it is Your love which still calls me Shirdi. I laugh and cry by seeing Your Dwarkamai. Dear Baba, please make me sit beside You once again and hug me.

Chapter 39 Baba's Knowledge of Sanskrit

His Interpretation of a Verse from Gita - Construction of the Samadhi Mandir.
This chapter (39) deals with Baba's interpretation of a verse from the Bhagawad-Gita. As some people believed that Baba knew not Sanskrit, and the interpretation was Nanasaheb Chandorkar's.

Baba's Interpretation

Nobody believed that Baba knew Sanskrit. One day He surprised all by giving a good interpretation of a verse from the Gita to Nanasaheb Chandorkar.

Nanasaheb Chandorkar was a good student of Vedanta. He had read Gita with commentaries and prided himself on his knowledge of all that. He fancied that Baba knew nothing of all this or of Sanskrit. So, Baba one day pricked the bubble. These were the days before crowds flocked to Baba, when Baba had solitary talks at the Mosque with such devotees. Nana was sitting near Baba and massaging His Legs and muttering something.

Baba - Nana, what are you mumbling yourself?

Nana - Iam reciting a shloka (verse) from Sanskrit.

Baba - What shloka?

Nana - From Bhagawad-Gita
Baba - Utter it loudly.

Nana then recited B.G.IV-34 which is as follows :-

'Tadviddhi Pranipatena Pariprashnena Sevaya,

Upadekshyanti Te Jnanam Jnaninastattwadarshinah'

Baba - Nana, do you understand it?
Nana - Yes.
Baba - If you do, then tell me.

Nana - It means this - "Making Sashtanga Namaskar, i.e., prostration, questioning the guru, serving him, learn what this Jnana is. Then, those Jnanis that have attained the real knowledge of the Sad-Vastu (Brahma) will give you upadesha (instruction) of Jnana."

Baba - Nana, I do not want this sort of collected purport of the whole stanza. Give me each word, its grammatical force and meaning.

Then Nana explained it word by word.
Baba - Nana, is it enough to make prostration merely ?
Nana - I do not know any other meaning for the word 'pranipata' than 'making prostration'.
Baba - What is 'pariprashna'?
Nana - Asking questions.
baba - What does 'Prashna' mean?
Nana - The same (questioning).
Baba - If 'pariprashna' means the same as prashna (question), why did Vyasa add the prefix 'pari'? Was Vyasa off his head?
Nana - I do not know of any other meaning for the word 'pariprashna'.
Baba - 'Seva', what sort of 'seva' is meant?
Nana - Just what we are doing always
Baba - Is it enough to render such service?
Nana - I do not know what more is signified by the word 'seva'.
Baba - In the next line "upadekshyanti te jnanam", can you so read it as to read any other word in lieu of Jnanam?
Nana - Yes.
Baba - What word?
Nana - Ajnanam.
Baba - Taking that word (instead of Jnana) is any meaning made out of the verse?
Nana - No, Shankara Bhashya gives no such construction.
Baba - Never mind if it does not. Is there any objection to using the word "Ajnana" if it gives a better sense?
Nana - I do not understand how to construe by placing "Ajnana" in it.
Baba - Why does Krishna refer Arjuna to Jnanis or Tattwadarshis to do his prostration, interrogation and service? Was not Krishna a Tattwadarshi, in fact Jnana himself.

Nana - Yes He was. But I do not make out why he referred Arjuna to Jnanis?

Baba - Have you not understood this?

Nana was humiliated. His pride was knocked on the head. Then Baba began to explain -

(1) It is not enough merely to prostrate before the Jnanis. We must make Sarvaswa Sharangati (complete surrender) to the Sad-guru.

(2) Mere questioning is not enough. The question must not be made with any improper motive or attitude or to trap the Guru and catch at mistakes in the answer, or out of idle curiosity. It must be serious and with a view to achieve moksha or spiritual progress.
(3) Seva is not rendering service, retaining still the feeling that one is free to offer or refuse service. One must feel that he is not the master of the body, that the body is Guru's and exists merely to render service to him.

Mr. Nanasaheb Chandorkar, who was a great devotee of Baba, was Mamlatdar at Nandurbar in Khandesh. He got an order of transfer to Pandharpur. His devotion to Sai Baba bore fruit, as he got an order to go and stay at Pandharpur which is regarded as the ‘BHUVAIKUNTHA’ - Heaven on earth. Nanasaheb had to take immediate charge, so he left, immediately, for the place, without even writing or informing anybody at Shirdi. He wanted to give a surprise visit to Shirdi - his Pandharpur, see and salute his Vithoba (Baba), and then proceed. Nobody dreamt of Nanasaheb’s departure for Shirdi, but Sai Baba knew all about this, as His eyes were everywhere (omniscient). As soon as Nanasaheb approached Neemgaon, a few miles from Shirdi, there was stir in the Masjid at Shirdi. Baba was sitting and talking with Mhalsapati, Appa Shinde and Kashiram, when He at once said, "Let us all four do some Bhajan, the doors of Pandhari are open, let us merrily sing." Then they began to sing in chorus, the burden of the song being "I have to go to Pandharpur and I have to stay on there, for it is the house of my Lord."

Baba sang and the devotees followed Him. In a short time Nanasaheb came there with his family, prostrated before Baba and requested Him to accompany them to Pandharpur and stay with them there. This solicitation was not necessary, as the devotees told Nanasaheb that Baba was already in the mood of going to Pandharpur and staying there. Hearing this Nanasaheb was moved and fell at Baba’s Feet. Then getting Baba’s permission, Udi (sacred ashes) and Blessings, Nanasaheb left for Pandharpur.

I Am An Astrologer - Shirdi Sai Baba

Nanasaheb Chandorkar, one of the pet devotees of Sai Baba was imparted abstruse teachings of life in various simple and practical dealings in his life by his very own Guru - Sai Baba. But sometimes, even if Sadguru is with us to guide in each and every step, we, being too much possessed and surrounded by our own intellect, forget to traverse the ways shown by Him. Two such incidents are narrated in this post.

Importance of charity has been depicted in almost all religions and Baba, Who did not belong to any particular sect or cult, reminded His devotees of this virtue as the foremost one. Nevertheless His devotees were constantly advised to give away charity without expectation of any reciprocation and it must be free from any feeling of showing gratefulness to the acceptor. But this is not put into practice by us as required. Baba, giving advice to Nanasaheb in this respect once said, "Nana, if anybody comes to you and asks anything, let alone alms, satisfy that person's demand as per your capacity. Do not say 'No'. If you are not inclined to give, answer him humbly describing your incapacity, but do not be angry with the person or laugh at him. If you have anything with you and do not wish to give, do not give but don't lie that the thing is not with you. Deny him with due respects and bear this in mind forever". Then time came when this advice was to be put into practice and Nanasaheb did not act as advised.

Let's see how.

Nanasaheb had once promised to donate Rs. 300 to Datta Temple in Kopergaon. But he could not do so because of some reasons and thus decided to go straight to Shirdi instead of halting at the temple and having darshan there. He chose a weird and thorny way on his friend's advice. As a result thorns pricked them all over their bodies and they had much difficulty to reach their destination. On reaching Baba welcomed with a distinct behaviour by not talking to Nanasaheb. This troubled Nanasaheb and he broke his silence and the following conversation took place:

Nana : Baba, why are You not talking with me?
Baba : Nana, when a person promises Me to follow My advices and instructions and thenafter forgets it, what's the meaning of talking with such a person?
Nana : Baba, I remember all Your teachings.
Baba : Gentleman, why did you resort to another way to escape from "Sarkar" (Lord Datta)? Because Sadhu (priest) will ask you for Rs.300 as promised by you? Is this the way to remember and acting on My teachings?

If you did not have money or could not arrange for it, you could have disclosed it to him. Sadhu was not inclined to eat you up for not giving money. But it not correct way to drop the idea of darshan of God in order to escape from your promise to a saint. Have not thorns pricked you and your intelligent friend? So how can I talk with such personalities?

Baba told Nanasaheb to shed away ego and anger while giving away charity.
Baba : Nana, when anybody comes for alms to you, give only that much which your pocket allows. If that person is not satisfied and asks for more, deny him humbly and but never get angry.

Happy and sad days alternatively come in our lives. We are very much attached to our family members and are always worried about their welfare and well-being. Thus it is painful when any of our family member dies. Nanasaheb also had to face such a situation. Baba has always said to His devotees, "Everyone comes and take away what they desire and wish, but no one even asks for the treasure which I wish to give".

Baba saved life of Mainatai (Nanasaheb's daughter) by sending Udi at her delivery time, but the baby died after few months. Even before birth of the baby, Mainatai's husband died. So she became widow at a very tender age and that too childless. This was a reason of worry of Nanasaheb and his family. When he went to Shirdi, Nanasaheb sat quietly in Dwarkamai. At other times, Nanasaheb and Baba used to talk with no pause and persons present in Dwarkamai drink that nectar to their heart's content, but that day it was otherwise with them.

When Baba could no longer tolerate the silence, He directly started talking with Nanasaheb not minding his silence. He added and said, if you have come for baby and son-in-law to Me, then your coming here is useless. Birth and death, all these depend on previous births deeds. Even Almighty God's powers are limited in this case and they cannot bring about any change in this phenomenon. Is is possible to ask sun or moon to arise two yards away from their original position? This is not possible and if done, all balance of nature will get disturbed.

Nana : Baba, If it is so, then why do You promise someone saying "A son will be born to you" and exactly a baby boy takes birth and to some you say, "You will get job" and person gets job as said by You. Is it not Your miracle?
Baba : "Nana, no i do not do any miracles. Astrologers, with their calculations, predict about happenings of next two-three days and some predictions turn out to be true. I am capable of peeping in future more than them. This is the reason that whatever I say, happens. My art is similar to that of an astrologer. But you people do not understand this. You take them as miracles, because you do not know the future. So ultimately credit of all happenings goes to Me, you all bow to Me and consider them as miracles done by Me. I offer your pranams to Father God and see to it that you are benefited.

A Cup Of Tea Arranged For Nanasaheb By Shirdi Sai Baba

Originally named as Narayan Govind Chandorkar, Nanasaheb Chandorkar, an ardent and staunch devotee of Sai Baba, needs no special introduction since in Shri Sai Satcharitra there are many instances wherein his name has been referred. Devotees who were fortunate to be living in Baba's times were indeed incarnations of Almighty, otherwise how could they take birth when Baba was in bodily form on this earth. Stories of such incarnations are really wonderful which contains messages for us from Sai Baba.

We are aware of an incident wherein Nanasaheb Chandorkar's thirst was satisfied by Baba Who appeared to him as a woodcutter. Now another more interesting incident of the same kind is being shared in this post. It is very well known that Nanasaheb was of spiritual intellect and thus any place of worship attracted his attention and earnest desire to go for darshan of any deity was always present in him. He had immense faith in Baba and Baba too reciprocated his faith. As a part of his complete surrender, Nanasaheb never doubted Baba's words. In fact, his immediate actions were to abide by Baba's words bearing full confidence that whatever Baba will do, will be best for him.

Lord Ganesha temple was situated in deep forest of Padmalay and to reach there one had to cross the forest. The temple was about 10 miles from the nearest railway station. Nanasaheb, serving as a Deputy Collector, a very respectable position in those days, had made all arrangements for reaching there. But when he reached the point of starting, he did not get any conveyance to reach the temple because train was late by few hours. On reaching the station in evening with his friends, due to unavailability of any other means of conveyance, he decided to cover the distance of 10 miles by walking. By the time they all reached mid-way, it was already nine at night. As per practice, authorities of the temple leave for their homes at about nine or ten at night. So a wave of worry passed in Nanasaheb's mind whether they will be allowed to enter the temple or not, let alone having darshan. After walking for more one-two miles, i.e. covering total of 6-7 miles of their journey, Nanasaheb was felt hungry. He said to Baba mentally, "Baba, i will not ask more from You, but please take care to provide atleast a cup of tea on completion of this journey, so that my hunger is appeased". Saying these words to Baba, Nanasaheb started walking towards his destination with double speed.

At about eleven, they reached near the temple and saw doors of the temple open from a distance and the priest when seeing few men nearing the temple, shouted right from his place, "Is Nana coming"? It was considered to be an insult as a person of such high profile position was being called by his short name. But Nanasaheb was not angry at this, instead he was very happy and replied, "Oh, how did you come to know that Nana is coming?"

Priest answered, "I received an aerial message from Sai Baba saying - My Nana who is thirsty, hungry and tired is coming to you. Please serve him with a cup of tea. Come on, tea is ready for you all". Thus Baba takes care of His dear devotees at any time and at any place.

This is true, that the effects of Karma no one can escape. Before a person comes to the level of devotion, he has done some karma- both good & bad. This karma haunts him & one has to finish this store of karma before becoming free.

But it is certainly possible for Sai baba to manipluate the timing & intensity of the karma effects.

However later on getting devotion, all his future karma becomes posistive karma & his suffering is mimimum. Finally at the level of Sanyas/Virakti, he is free from karma effects, since he is not responsible for his karma, it being dedicated to Lord.

Baba’s first Darshan

In 1892, Nanasaheb was the Secretary to the Collector at Nagar and Appa Kulkarni was the Revenue Clerk in Shirdi. Appa wanted to go to Nagar in connection with his office work and went to first avail Darshan of Baba. Baba said, “Appa, go to Nagar and enquire who is the Secretary to the Collector and tell that Nana that I have called him.”

Appa conveyed the message; but Nana – thinking “What concern do I have with a Fakir” – refused to oblige. Then Baba once again sent the same message and Nana once again refused to oblige. After this happened 2-3 times, reluctantly Nana agreed to visit Baba.

A doubt lingered in his mind – Am I going to meet an ordinary Fakir or a true saint ? While this confusion harassed him, he asked his wife to give him his old coat. Wearing it, he set on the way to Shirdi. On nearing the place, he realized that he was empty handed. He was worried about what he should buy and where he can buy it – as Shirdi was a nondescript town. Thinking about this, he casually put his hand in the coat pocket. He was surprised to find a few Badams (almonds) and a few pieces of Khadi-sakhar (sugar crystals).

He started thinking, “How could this happen ? What a miracle it is ? Is Baba a Sadhu ?"

A person earns wealth and well-being because of his good deeds. Therefore, if someone prospers, it is due to his good deeds and what do we lose ? And so, one must win over the bad quality of being jealous."

Nanasaheb prostrated before Baba and agreed, "From today, I will try not to be jealous."[/color]

One can easily conquer jealousy, if we remember that the person's good has happened only on account of his Good deeds committed earlier.

Om Sai Ram
thats very true . jealous become obstacles in upgrading  our life . we looks upon others and feel jealous
thanks baba ji for showing us the right path.

SARVATRA SANCHAR and SARVA-SAKSHITVA

Baba used to discuss several things freely with Nana. Nanasaheb also used to place his queries and problems before Baba without inhibitions.

Once, Nana enquired, “In the holy books, it is said that every day one should perform Dev-pooja, then offer Kak-bali (food for the crows) and then do Anna-dan to an Atithi (guest) with honor. I try to adhere to this routine every day; but on occasions, I keep waiting for an Atithi ; but he rarely arrives. Are the holy books wrong in prescribing the above manner ?”

Baba clarified saying - “Are Nana, it is not necessary that an Atithi must be a Brahmin and human being. He could be a Brahmin or may belong to any other caste. Moreover, he may be a human being or an animal. Anyone who is in need of food is Atithi. Hundreds of thousands of Atithis may have come to you, but you may have ignored them in your quest for Brahmin Atithi. Erase this narrow meaning of the word. Every day, along with Kak-bali, place a heap of rice outside your home. Anyone who is hungry will eat it. If you feed a tired and hungry soul, you are following the path of Paramartha.”

Source : Translated from Gujarati Book "Sai Sarovar"

Sai baba tested Nana's character to the limit.

The way a person would respond to such a situation would depend on his progress in spiritual evolution.

1. An IRRELEGIOUS/Unevolved person : would not even allow the beggar to stand near his house, let alone giving anything to the beggar, since he has no sympathy/empathy with him. The distinction between YOU & ME is very wide in this case.

2. A Commoner person, busy with his worldly life, would not drive the beggar away, but instead shut his door, on seeing the beggar. This is to avoid any further trouble.

3. A person who has some faith in god would atleast bother to enquire what the beggar needs. He may give or not give depending on the circumstances.

4. A person who has good enough progress in Spiritual evolution, will never send the beggar empty handed.  He feels strong empathy with the beggar's plight & imagines himself in place of the beggar.

5. For a highest evolved person, the beggar is non-different from he himself. He will make any sacrifice for the sake of the beggar, even putting himself in unlimited trouble. This is a Mahatma !!!

Sai baba must have wanted Nana to be a Mahatma.

Some more devotees of Sai baba.....

BhAUSAHEB DHUMAL

ShrI Sakharam Balwant Dhumal, an ardent devotee of Baba, was a well-known lawyer from Nasik. His word carried considerable weight in government offices. He was a staunch social reformer. From 1917 to 1925, he worked as the first non-government chairman of district local board. Due to his pre-occupation with this chairmanship, he could devote limited time to his private practice. However, the government considered his this sacrifice and honored him as ‘Rao Bahaddur’. After 1925, Dhumal once again concentrated on his private practice. Due to Baba’s blessings, his practice flourished in spite of being away from the field for 8 long years.

He was extremely pious. Before he became a devotee of Baba, he was a follower of Shri Gajanan Maharaj. He first went to avail Darshan of Shri Sai Baba in the year 1907. And he was at once got attracted with the radiant personality. In the first visit itself, Baba asked him for a Dakshina of Rs. 2. On receiving it Baba promptly returned the amount to Dhumal and said, “Preserve these ! Don’t spend or give them away !!”

Once, Baba said to Dhumal, “Are Bhau, I take care of you at every moment. If I don’t do so, I don’t know what will happen.” On one more occasion, Baba said to him, ‘‘Bhau, whole night I was unable to sleep.” Bhausaheb enquired “What was the reason Baba ?” Baba replied, ‘‘The etire night I thought about you and only about you.” Hearing these words of Baba, Bhausaheb was moved with mixed emotions – surprise, love and gratitude. He was sad that Baba was doing so much for a mere mortal like him. But, he was convinced that Baba was the only saviour Who will protect him from evil happening in future.

In 1909, when Dhumal was only 36 years old, his wife died an untimely death. He was young, dashing and a well-known lawyer. His friends and relatives began persuading him to get married once again. However, Dhumal was firmly of view that such a marriage was possible only if permitted by Baba. A famous lawyer from Nagpur – Bapusaheb Kinkhede – took him to Baba to seek the permission. Baba just glanced at him and Kinkhede realized that the permission has been declined. Till his death, Dhumal adhered to Baba’s wishes and remained single. He had earned a lot of fame and money in his profession. However, he gradually absolved himself of family responsibilities and turned toward Virakti.

After the death of his wife, Dhumal concentrated his energies on further studies in the legal professional and started planning for Barrister-ship. Bapusaheb Butti showed readiness to finance his study abroad as well as expenses of Dhumal’s family in India. However, Baba declined permission saying, “Your Vilayat (England) is here only.” Dhumal adhered to Baba’s wishes.

Om Sai Baba.

Thank you, dear v2birit ji.

Dhumal sahib passed the acid test of Guru Bhakti. Staying alone all his life while he could have married again. And, giving up his studies abroad just because Baba did not want it. Such obedience to Guru's will, without any regret and remorse, requires submission of one's will entirely. That is the most difficult and fulfilling accomplishment of any disciple.

Jai Sai Baba.

In 1918, just prior to Baba’s Maha-nirvan, Dhumal’s sister-in-law became seriously ill at Pune. Dhumal took about Rs. 80 and set on his journey from Nasik to Pune. En-route he halted at Shirdi to avail Baba’s blessings and Udi. However, Baba took away the Rs. 80 that he had and also denied him permission to go to Pune. In the meantime, Dhumal received a telegram informing him that the lady had passed away.

After a few days, Baba set on His last journey. Dhumal realized the reason for Baba keeping him back at Shirdi. Baba knew that the lady’s death was inevitable. Further, if he had gone to Pune, he would have missed the few last memorable days in company of Baba.

After Baba’s Mahanirvan, the district court appointed 5 trustees to administer the Sansthan property. After one of the trustees expired, Dhumal was appointed in his place. In his capacity as a trustee, he used his legal knowledge and experience to set the rules and bye-laws for the Shirdi Sansthan.

On Saturday 29th June 1940, Bhausaheb breathed his last at his own home. He always wished that at the time of his death, he should be in Shirdi. But, Baba desired otherwise.

SHAMA (MADHAVRAO DESHPANDE)

Once, on Baba’s instructions, Madhavrao went to Bapusaheb Butti at Nagpur. While there, he went for the Darshan of Shri Tajuddin Baba towards the South of Nagpur.

This is an incident after he returned to Shirdi. It was evening time. A lot of devotees were sitting around Baba. Baba enquired, ‘‘Ka Shamrao, which are all the places that you visited ?’’ “Deva, I had gone to Nagpur.” “You visited Nagpur. Then, did you see the tree of Gold towards South of Nagpur ?’’ Madhavrao had a keen sense of observation and a sharp mind. He realized that this must be a reference to Tajuddin Baba.  He promptly said, ‘‘Hoy, Deva ! I had gone for the Darshan of Tajuddin Baba at the South of Nagpur in the garden of Raghoji Raje Bhosale.’’ “And thereafter, which places did you visit ?’’ Baba asked.  Madhavrao said, “Deva, from Nagpur I went to Amravati. There Narayan Maharaj from Bet Kedgaon had arrived. I took his Darshan also.’’

Madhavrao used to tease Baba. So he added, “Kay Deva, you know, a lot of people go to take Darshan of Narayan Maharaj” giving stress on “a lot of people”. He was anxious to know Baba’s reply to this. But, Baba was equally playful ! Initially, He did not reply at all. Madhavrao repeatedly started asking the same thing again and again. Finally, after 5-10 minutes, Baba said to him in a persuading tone, ‘‘It is like this Shamya. After all one’s father is his father. He may beat him, thrash him; but, he is the only one who will feel pity. How anyone else can have that feeling ! I am your father ! What do you have to do with anyone else ?”

Once, Madhavrao was at Nagpur with Shri Butti and the attack of piles reoccurred. Madhavrao sent a letter to Baba. Baba replied, “Ask him to come to Shirdi !” He further jokingly added, “I take utmost care of him; but he likes to roam about; does not like to come here. Send him a letter and call him here ! He will get well.”

Once, in an angry mood, Madhavrao said, “It is we who made you God. You give money and wealth to others; but are very miserly as far as I am concerned.” Baba smiled indulgently at him and said with affection, “Are Shamya, the wealth of money is not for you. What is for you is very much different than that.” Madhavrao understood the significance of this and remained quite about the matter.

Some of the devotees gave Baba things with a hope that He will bless it and return it as a Prasad. However, many times Baba – instead of returning it – passed it on to Madhavrao saying - “Keep it with you !” In this manner He handed over several articles – Vishnu-sahastra-naam Pothi, Eknathi Bhagwat Pothi, a coin having picture of Ram-Seeta-Laxman, silver Padukas, a clay statue. Sometimes, Baba said to Madhavrao, “Shamya, build My house (Devhara) and keep all these things in it.”

Baba fulfilled all demands and wishes of Madhavrao. He did not provide him wealth; but gave him enjoyment of all the things, which wealth can provide. Several pilgrimages such as Chaar Dham, Kashi, Gaya, Ayodhya, Mathura, Gokul, Ujjain, Haridwar, Prayag, Girnar are hectic and taxing money-wise. But, with Baba’s blessings, Madhavrao undertook them without any hardships.

Once, Tatyasaheb Nulkar became seriously ill while in Shirdi. His last hour came near and he disclosed a desire to get holy water from Baba’s Feet. It was almost 1-1.30 in the night. Who could dare to go to Baba at such an hour ? Madhavrao got up and went to the Masjid with Pali and Panch-patra. Baba got up from His place and roared, “Who is it ?” On getting reply that “I am Shamya”, Baba said, “You came at this hour” and pretended to come to hit him. He stood on the Masjid foundation with one leg in the front.

Madhavrao started pleading with him, “Tatyasaheb is losing his life. He is asking for the holy water from Your Feet. Please give it quickly.”

Baba was saying “No !” and Madhavrao was daring to inch forward. Of course, as Tatyasaheb was an ardent devotee, Baba had also put forward his toe.  Madhavrao immediately dipped the toe in the water carried in Panch-patra and fulfilled the last wish of Tatyasaheb.

The end of Bapusaheb Butti’s life had come very near. Madhavrao was beside him. Butti was still conscious. He called Madhavrao near him and said, “Madhavrao, now I am unable to bear the pains. It will be better if Baba takes me near His Feet. I know you very well. When I am near you, I feel as if I am near Baba’s Feet.” While uttering these words, tears were flowing from Bapusaheb’s eyes. He was overcome with emotions and placed his head on Madhavrao’s feet regarding them to be Baba’s.

After the demise of Bapusaheb Butti, his son Shrimant Keshavrao Butti also accorded the same respect to Madhavrao. On pilgrimage tours, he used to take Madhavrao with him. Similarly, he used to welcome Madhavrao at his Nagpur house with lot of hospitality. He used to pay some amount as a monthly pension to Madhavrao till the end.  After the death of Madhavrao, some donation was given by Keshavrao Butti to Madhavrao’s son Eknath to be used for the last rites.

CHANDRABHANSHETH

Shri Sai Baba used to visit Dengale brothers at Nimgaon. Similarly, He also followed a practice of visiting Chandrabhansheth Marwari at village Rahata at a distance of  3 kilometers from Shirdi. In those days, Baba went on foot to Rahata. He had a liking for fragrant flowers like Jaai – Jui and Mogra. While returning from Rahata, He used to bring saplings of these favourite flowers. The plot - where Sathe Wada was later on built – was vacant in those days. Baba had planted a beautiful garden at that place with His own hands.

Chandrabhansheth’s Saand family, originally belonged to Rajasthan, had now settled down in Rahata. He was known there as a rich Jamindar. He had also earned a name in business.

While describing the affectionate relations and meetings between Baba and Chandrabhansheth, Chiranjeev Amolakchand alias Babu  - son of Chandrabhansheth -  says :

“Baba and Khushalchand met each other at least one in every 8-10 days. If, due to some difficulties, it was not possible for Khushalchand to come to Shirdi, then Baba sent for a Tonga either through Tatya Kote or some other devotee and went in it or by foot to Rahata. He first entered Khushalchand’s garden, located at the border of the village. From there, a message was sent to Khushalchand’s house that Baba is coming. Then, Khushalchand, all the members of his Saand family and other villagers used to gather together to welcome Baba. Ceremoniously Baba was brought to Khushalchand’s house. A Pooja-Archa was performed. Baba enquired after the family members of Khushalchand and blessed them. If insisted upon, Baba took - at the most – milk and Roti. After spending about 30-40 minutes in their company, Baba returned to Shirdi in Khushalchand’s Tonga or bullock-cart or by foot.”

It is true, that love and affection for the Saand family brought Baba to Rahata. However, there was another motive also – that of asking for Dakshina.

The real reason for Dakshina was to teach Parmartha to His devotees. He always said,

“Are, it is me, who has to grind the flour for the person, from whom I take Dakshina.”

Therefore, with the welfare of His devotees in His mind, Baba requested for Dakshina – sometimes directly, sometimes by paying visit in their dreams or sometimes from the devotees, who had come for His Darshan.

With reference to Dakshina, Balasaheb Dev says :

For the purpose of requesting for Dakshina, generally Baba did not go out of Shirdi’s Dwarkamai. However, the exception was when He visited once or twice in a year for that purpose the residences of two Marwaris at village Rahata at a distance of four – five miles from Shirdi. These Marwaris also responded with warm heart. They led Him by His hands to their house, made him comfortable against bolsters and gave him Dakshina to the best of their ability. Baba took it and placed it in His pocket. Thereafter, He made enquiries about all and sundry and then returned to Shirdi. When Baba embarked on His return journey, the villagers of Shirdi took and brought Him back in a procession. Once, I was fortunate – with Baba’s blessings – to be able to witness one such procession. I  greatly appreciated the good fortune of the Marwari duo.”

Baba taught Nanasaheb the qualities of a good disciple and also put him to various tests in the matter. Not only that, He narrated how an ideal Adhyatmik Guru should be and how to identify him.

In this regard, Shri Saisharananand has offered clarification. He writes -

In those days, Baba frequently talked with Nanasaheb. He repeatedly said, “Nana, the   place of a Guru is the highest for every man. If one places utmost faith in his Guru, then he will achieve what he desires. A devotee’s strengths are because of his Guru. Gurubhakti  is superior to the Bhakti of all Gods and Goddesses. Guru is Almighty and Guru is everything.”

Baba used to say to Nanasaheb - “Now-a-days, a lot of people want to become ‘Guru’. But, the responsibilities of a Guru are mammoth. The Guru has to accompany and guide his disciple till he reaches the ultimate freedom. A Guru’s duties do not end after merely delivering advice. There are many learned people who can deliver advice in beautifully worded sermons. But, they cannot become ‘Adhyatmik Guru’. A true Guru not only lays down a lesson before his disciple but also closely keeps a watch on the person to find out how much of the lesson has been imbibed by him. Wherever necessary, he gives encouragement. Similarly, where necessary, he criticizes him.”

Madhav Adkar

Madhavrao was an expert singer, as well as an accomplished actor. Madhavrao was blessed with a sweet voice and good looks. Therefore, he became an excellent medium for popularizing the poetic contributions of Dasganu amongst common folk.

Besides complementing the talent of each other, they had certain other common interests.  Both of them were religious minded and were equally immersed in the thoughts and worship of the Almighty. They were also not interested in worldly desires.

Dasganu had gauged the true liking of Madhavrao’s mind. He, therefore, in 1897 (or there about) took him to Sai Baba. There, Madhavrao got what he was searching for all along and succeeded in getting peace of mind.

Aarati Sai Baba

Whenever Madhavrao visited Shirdi, he stayed there for long periods of time. He sustained his living by taking private tuitions. He set his foot on the path towards Shirdi as soon as the thought struck him.

In 1903-04, he was in Shirdi, totally immersed in Baba’s thought and suddenly a poem got composed in his mind. It was a poem devoted to Shri Sai Baba in the form of an Aarati. Dasganu was amazed and very happy with the song. But, Madhavrao thought nothing much of his creation and put the piece of paper in his pocket.

When both of them went to Baba, Baba realized that Madhavrao was trying to hide it and said, ‘‘Are, Madhava, why are you trying to hide the paper. Read it aloud !’’ On hearing it, Baba said, ‘‘Your this Aarati will look after welfare of the devotees.’’

Madhavrao’s basic nature tended towards Vairagya. Therefore, he was very happy to spend his time in Shirdi and be near his Sadguru and was never keen on returning back to his wife and other family members.

His relatives searched for him everywhere, but to no avail. Ultimately, the search ended, when one Raghopant, who had spotted Madhavrao in Shirdi, conveyed the information to them. Madhavrao’s father went to Shirdi and brought him back.

Baba had guessed this in advanced and told Madhavrao in Hindi that ‘‘Two persons riding horses are coming to take you back. You will have to go with them. Go ! I will be always with you in the form of the Aarati.’’ When the riders arrived, Baba said, ‘‘Go with them immediately ! You will give birth to a son. Name him as ‘Ram’ ! Don’t stay here anymore. Go with them !’’

Against his own wishes, Madhavrao obeyed Baba’s diktat and returned to his home and family life. In due course, a son was born and named as ‘Ramchandra’.

Whenever Madhavrao was not in Shirdi, he would be restless. His heart yearned to be there. On one such occasion, as the holy festival of Ram Navami was fast approaching, Madhavrao wanted to be in Shirdi as soon as possible. In reality, his health was not good. He was worried as to how he will manage the trip. Just then, two of his friends arrived and they took him with great care to Shirdi. This is how Baba used to know the utmost desires of His devotees and fulfil the same.

While Madhavrao was in Shirdi, he would experience that every moment Baba is looking after his welfare and wellbeing. Once, as per his routine, he wanted to go inside the Masjid. But, there was a huge crowd of devotees already waiting to enter and therefore, the guards were not allowing Madhavrao to enter first. Just then, Baba sent a message ‘‘Let Madhavrao come in !’’

Try to imagine the feelings and joy of Madhavrao on hearing Baba’s message !

Because of the good deeds that he must have done in his earlier births, Madhavrao was fortunate to have a Sadguru like Shri Sai Baba. But, besides Shirdi, he used to repeatedly visit various places of pilgrimage such as Kashi, Rameshwar, Balaji, Gangapur, Narasobachi Wadi, Mahur, Tuljapur, Pandharpur and a host of others. Therefore, during these visits, he could be near great men like Gajanan Maharaj, Akkalkot Swami, Balbheem Maharaj, Sakhaya Swami Dehukar, Vasakar, Vyankat Swami, Vinayakbua, Dada Maharaj and other saints and holy men. He received their blessings.

Madhavrao had a sweet voice and due to his in-depth study of various religious, historical and mythological topics, people loved his singing and rendering of kirtans, bhajans and pravachans.

Madhavrao could compose poems very quickly. However, he always bowed his head before the mastery of a great poet like Dasganu. He would make it a point to attend and listen to Dasganu’s kirtans. He knew many of Dasganu’s kirtans and poems by heart. We find a reference that while he was in Shirdi, Madhavrao once rendered Dasganu’s kirtan on Shri Eknath Maharaj.

It was Dasganu’s practice to recite ‘Vishnu-sahasra-naam’ 12 times every day. Seeing this, Madhavrao also began to follow the practice. He continued this till his demise. And even now, the practice is being followed by some members of his family.

Madhavrao made it a point to accompany Dasganu and attend the festival of Ram Navami every year till 1952.
