Real Experience of devotees

  • Experiences recorded by late hon. Hari Sitaram Dixit :-

When I first set eyes upon Sai Baba, I felt my dear friend Govind Raghunath Dabholkar too should have Darshan and so I wrote to him from Shirdi, inviting him for a visit. When I later met him, he said,

“I will surely go for a Darshan. But, I do not understand the need of a Guru. I feel, we have to do everything ourselves.”

Dabholkar decided to go to Shirdi; but on the very day he was to leave, his friend’s only son died in Lonavala and he cancelled the trip. His friend’s son had died despite his Guru’s presence. This left him wondering, whether a Guru was of any use, when whatever was to happen could not be averted.

Later, he met another friend there who convinced him to make the pilgrimage to Shirdi and they left.  They were to get down at Dadar, thinking they could board the train to Manmad from there. But, at Bandra station, a Muslim gentleman told them that the mail train did not halt at Dadar and they should get on it from Bori Bunder.  They followed his advice and reached Shirdi the next morning.

While there was still time to go for Sai’s Darshan, Dabholkar got into a discussion with another gentleman about the ‘Use of a Guru.’ Later, we all went for Darshan. As soon as we were seated, Sai Maharaj, while looking at Dabholkar, asked me, “What was this Hemadpant saying ?”  I said, “Baba, You know everything.”

The next day, when I asked him permission to leave, He granted it. I asked, “Where should I go ?”

“There.” “How is the road ?” I asked. “There are many roads. They go from various places. One road goes from here. It is difficult. There are tigers and bears on the way.” “But, if we have a guide ?”

Baba said, “If we have a guide, there is no problem. The tigers and bears will move aside. Or else there is danger of falling into a deep ravine.”

Of course, this conversation made a deep impact on Dabholkar and he thought, he had an answer to his query about the use of a Guru.

Later, he had many such experiences of Sai Maharaj and he became a true devotee.

  • Nanasaheb’s younger son says :-

Baba used to discuss several things freely with Nana. Nanasaheb also used to place his queries and problems before Baba without inhibitions.

Once, Nana enquired, “In the holy books, it is said that every day one should perform Dev-pooja, then offer Kak-bali (food for the crows) and then do Anna-dan to an Atithi (guest) with honor. I try to adhere to this routine every day; but on occasions, I keep waiting for an Atithi ; but he rarely arrives. Are the holy books in prescribing the above manner ?”

Baba clarified saying - “Are Nana, it is not necessary that an Atithi must be a Brahmin and human being. He could be a Brahmin or may belong to any other caste. Moreover, he may be a human being or an animal. Anyone who is in need of food is Atithi. Hundreds of thousands of Atithis may have come to you, but you may have ignored them in your quest for Brahmin Atithi. Erase this narrow meaning of the word. Every day, along with Kak-bali, place a heap of rice outside your home. Anyone who is hungry will eat it. If you feed a tired and hungry soul, you are following the path of Paramartha.”

Nanasaheb was utterly moved by this simple explanation given by Baba. He was wonder-struck at the vast knowledge of his Sadguru.

Nana resolved to follow Baba’s advice to the word. However, Baba was closely watching him and stood Nana to a test.

Once, Nanasaheb reached Shirdi at noon around 12-12.30. He had come alone this time. None of his family members were with him. The moment he entered the Masjid, Baba enquired about his well-being and then told him, “Nana, today I feel like having Puran Poli.” Nana replied, “Baba, it is too late in the day to prepare Puran Poli. I don’t have any woman-folk from my family to whom I could have asked to prepare the dish. And, where will I find any male or female cook in this town ?” Baba retorted, “I don’t mind the time that may be needed to prepare it; but you see that I get Puran Poli.” Nana repeatedly pleaded with Baba to relent. He even assured that he will bring Puran Poli for the next day’s Naivedya. But, Baba was not willing to change His mind. He continued His stand – “I feel like having Puran Poli now only.”

Now Nanasaheb was helpless. He said, “I am going now to search for the cook. If I get one, then I will buy the material. I think, it will take about three hours to prepare the dish. That makes it around 4’o clock in the afternoon. How will You have the dish at such an odd time ?” Baba replied, “Whatever the time, I will have it.”

Nanasaheb managed to find the cook and also to get the dish prepared. He placed it in a plate and took it to Baba. He requested Baba to consume it. To his surprise, Baba said, “Good ! I have had my share of Puran Poli. Now, take the plate back and have it yourself !” Nana said, “Baba, for your sake, I took all the trouble and got the dish prepared. You have not even touched the plate and are asking me to eat it instead ? What was the point in making me undertake all the pains ? I will not touch even a morsel unless and until You eat at least a small portion.” Baba again repeated the same sentence - “I have had Puran Poli. Now you have it !” Nana was not convinced. He left the plate near Baba and went in a huff to Chavdi.

Which mother’s heart will not be moved, if her child has not eaten anything in a fit of anger ? Sai-mauli asked Nana to come back. He again repeated, “I have eaten the Poli. Now, don’t be stubborn and like a good child, have your food.” Not convinced, Nana once again returned to Chavdi. Finally, Baba called him back and said, “Nana, did you not learn anything in the last 18 years that you have spent with me ? Am I only this mortal body that you see ? I come in the guise of anything - a fly, an ant or any other form - and eat what I want.” Thereafter, Baba made a sign and said, “If you see this sign, understand that I have had my food.”

Nana was now convinced. He happily went back and had the Prasad given by his Guru-mauli. Such were the ties of affection between the Guru and his disciple. Because of the strong bond, the Guru had revealed the secret sign to his follower.

  • Nanasaheb’s faith in Baba became more steadfast. He  started feeling that he should go more frequently to take Baba’s Darshan. He intensely desired that he should incessantly have thoughts about Baba. But, his office and family matters allowed him little time for anything else. And he was sad.

Once, he was sitting near Baba and Baba gave him an excellent way of overcoming the problem. Baba said, “You want that you should have my thoughts through out the day - Isn’t it ? Then try to see me in the smallest of the things.” Nanasaheb failed to get the point.

Then Baba clarified, “Are, when you see a vegetable, think that it is my creation. This way see me in each and everything that comes before you.” How simple was the remedy suggested by Baba !

  • This is an incident which took place some time in the year 1900. Nanasaheb came to Shirdi with some people who included Bapu Nagarkar, Kangaokar and a Ramdasi Haridasi Bua who was a resident of the pilgrimage town of Wai.

The Bua had been invited to Nagar for reciting Katha Puran on the auspicious occasion of Hanuman Jayanti. He thought of availing Baba’s Darshan on the way and hence was in a hurry to proceed further. He sought Baba’s permission to leave. But, Baba wanted him to first have his meal and then leave. Thinking that it was more important to catch the vehicle rather than having food, the Bua took with him Bapu Nagarkar and said, “We cannot take this mad Fakir seriously.”

Nanasaheb said to him, ‘‘Honour Baba’s word ! Let all of us have meals and proceed together.” However, the Bua refused to listen to him. Baba said to Nana, “Let him go by his own wishes. Some people are selfish. For the sake of their own interests they are even willing to part ways from their own blood relations. Therefore, one should make friends with only those people who will not leave you even if the heaven may fall upon them.”

Bua and Nagarkar went ahead without having food, while Nanasaheb and Kangaonkar had their meals, took Baba’s permission and blessings and then proceeded towards the station. On reaching there, they saw Bua and Nagarkar still waiting for the train. Their faces were sullen knowing that they had committed a grave crime. It so happened that the train timings had changed from the very same day. They were now repenting that they should have followed Baba’s diktat.

  • Once, Baba posed a question to Nana, “Which is one of the Shadripu (six vices of human nature) is easier to conquer ?” Nanasaheb replied, “Very difficult to answer that question.” Baba said, “It is jealousy ! It means not being able to digest the progress of others. It is very easy to win over jealousy. Because, by being jealous, we neither gain nor lose. A person earns wealth and well-being because of his good deeds. Therefore, if someone prospers, it is due to his good deeds and what do we lose ?  And so, one must win over the bad quality of being jealous.”

Nanasaheb prostrated before Baba and agreed, “From today, I will try not to be jealous.”

A few months passed after the above incident and Nanasaheb arrived in Shirdi. As he was sitting near Baba’s Feet, Baba said, “Nana, I am going to impart the second lesson. A person may ask you for something. If you are capable of providing it, then never say ‘No’. If you do not wish to give the thing or not capable of giving it, convey your ‘No’ politely and in nice words. Never ever try to make fun of the person or insult him. Don’t also show your superiority. Be true to your words !”

In fact, earlier a misdeed had been committed at the hands of Nanasaheb which prompted Baba to give him the above advice. On the road from Kopargaon to Shirdi there is temple of Shri Gurudev Datta on the banks of the River Godavari. The temple priest - who was very Sattvik and pious - stayed nearby. While on the way to or from Shirdi, it was the practice of Nanasaheb to avail Darshan of the Almighty and also chitchat with the priest.

After the two were rather close to each other, the priest gently prodded Nana by saying that, “I feel that a Ghat should be built on the river. It will beautify the temple and also provide a long needed facility for the local people to wash clothes, take bath etc.”

The priest knew was from a well-to-do family, drew a substantial salary and also very much devout. Further, being the secretary to the collector he wielded sufficient powers in the matter. If he resolves, he could mobilize the necessary funds and add a handsome contribution of his own. So thinking, the priest had diplomatically broached upon the subject. However, Nanasaheb realized that the project would cost thousands of rupees and hence, did not give his concurrence.

The priest would remind Nanasaheb about the matter every time Nana visited the temple. Ultimately, Nanasaheb made his mind clear to the priest and said, “The Ghat - that you have in mind - will cost thousands of rupees. And, I will not be able to raise the amount. However, if you insist, I can think of constructing the 10-12 steps which lead to the temple. It will cost about rupees three hundred and I can bear the expenses.”

The priest was satisfied that at least a good beginning had been made.

After a few weeks thereafter, Nanasaheb set on to visit Shirdi by the night train along with husband of his sister-in-law Shri Biniwale. After reaching Kopargaon in the morning, he realized that, “If I go for Datta’s Darshan, then the priest will once again ask for money. It will be difficult to say ‘no’ to him. But, I have so far not even started collecting for the amount.”

In fact, Biniwale was keen on having Datta’s Darshan. But, Nanasaheb preferred to take a different route just to dodge the priest. The route was full of thorns and thickets. It was early morning and hence, the light was insufficient. En route, they suffered a lot and started bleeding because of the thorns. Ultimately, somehow they managed to reach Shirdi. On reaching, they went for Baba’s Darshan and waited to hear His Amrutvani.

It was Baba’s usual practice to ask questions like how was your journey, who all have come etc. However, Baba did not ask them anything and on the contrary, He rather completely ignored them.

Nana realized that he must have committed some misdeed; but he was unable to find, what it was. They waited for some time to catch Baba’s eye and ultimately returned to the Wada. The question “Why Baba did not speak to me even a word ?” needled him continuously.  He was very much dejected. He felt, “If Baba is not going to talk to me, what is the point in coming to Shirdi ?” He once again eagerly went near Baba with great expectations. But, once again he was disappointed. Ultimately, he could not stop himself and asked Baba the reason for His anger. Then Baba clarified, “You promised me to learn your lessons by heart and did not do so. Why should I talk to such a person ? Are Nana, just because of the fear that the Bua (priest) will ask you for the 300 rupees, you not only chose to take a different route; but you even avoided taking the Darshan of Sarkar (Gurudev Datta). What kind of behaviour is this ? If you had not been able to raise the fund, it would have sufficed, if you had told the truth to the priest. The Bua would not have swallowed you. Even after taking an unfamiliar rout and succeeding in dodging the Bua, your feet were pricked by thorns isn’t it ? After spending so many years with me, is this what you learnt ?”

Several days passed after the above incident. One day, Baba said, “Nana, some time back I had imparted a lesson. I am repeating it now. If someone asks you for something, then give whatever you can give as per your own ability and desire. If the person is not satisfied with what he has received, then politely decline to give more. But, don’t get angry with him. Don’t show off your status or wealth. Will you remember this lesson or forget it once again ?” Nana replied, “Baba, I agree that I forgot the lesson once. But, that does not mean I will forget it again.” Baba said, “The lesson appears to be simple; but it is difficult to follow in real life.” Nana assured, “Even then, I will try to remember it with utmost sincerity.” Baba laughed and said, “Let us see !”

It was Baba’s practice to keep a close watch on the disciple and observe whether he adheres to the lesson.

At that time, Nanasaheb had come to stay in his Wada at Kalyan. His wife Sou. Aaisaheb (whom Baba referred as ‘Aai’ ) had prepared a earthen pot full of Bhajani (baked mixture of different kinds of pulses). Just then a beggar woman appeared there. Family members gave her some Bhiksha. But, she demanded that she be given that Bhajani ! Aaisaheb told the servants, “If she wants Bhajani, then give her some.” But, the beggar woman would not be satisfied. She demanded more. Some more was served. She wanted further more ! Aaisaheb got irritated and said, “How much more ? There are kids in the house. I must keep something for them also. I have given you so much and even then you want more ?”

Even after that, the beggar woman did not budge an inch. Aaisaheb went to the first floor of the house. Nanasaheb was engrossed in reading something. She narrated the story and requested him to come down.

Seeing the behaviour and arrogance of the beggar woman, Nanasaheb was livid. He shouted, “Tell her to take what is given to her and go away. If she doesn’t listen, call the police and physically drive her out.” The beggar woman said, ‘‘Saheb, if you don’t want to give, don’t give. But, there is no need to threaten me with police. I will go away myself.” And, she went away.

After this incident, Nanasaheb went for his periodical pilgrimage to Shirdi. But, Baba refused to talk to him. Nanasaheb waited for a long time for Baba to talk to him. Ultimately, he was unable to bear Baba’s Moun (vow of not speaking) and said, “Baba, You have not spoken a single word to me since I came. What is the matter ?”

“Someone told me that I will learn the lesson - that I had imparted – by heart and does not do so. Why I should talk to such a person ?” Baba repeated His utterances of the earlier incident. Nana replied, ‘‘No Baba. I try my best to adhere to Your teachings. I am unable to recollect any incident, where I have behaved against Your advice.”

“Then, why did you made a show of your high position ? Where was the necessity to threaten that beggar woman that you will ask the police to physically throw her out ? If you had not given her any more Bhajani, what could she have done ? She would have at the most sat down, waited a while and then gone away. But, instead of telling her ‘No’ in good polite words, you went to the extent of throwing around your high position and threatening to get her bodily evicted with the help of police.” So saying, Baba further added in His soft voice, “Are, we must consider ourselves to be the servants of this whole world.  If you do that, then there is no scope for getting angry at any one. Further, think that, whatever you are offering, you are offering to me.”

Initially, Nana could not understand, what Baba was saying; because a period of about 5-6 months had passed after the beggar woman’s incident. Also, he could never imagine that, Baba would come in the guise of a beggar woman and take his test.

After considering all this, Nana realized his mistake. It also dwelt upon him that, Baba was observing all his actions. Not only that, Baba was had complete control over his body and soul.

In short, Baba wanted to impress upon Nana the fact that after one lays down his Chitta-vrutti at the Feet of the Bhagavant, then there is no Aasakti (longing) for any thing.

  • Nanasahebs first Darshan with Baba:

In 1892, Nanasaheb was the Secretary to the Collector at Nagar and Appa Kulkarni was the Revenue Clerk in Shirdi. Appa wanted to go to Nagar in connection with his office work and went to first avail Darshan of Baba. Baba said, “Appa, go to Nagar and enquire who is the Secretary to the Collector and tell that Nana that I have called him.”

Appa conveyed the message; but Nana – thinking “What concern do I have with a Fakir” – refused to oblige. Then Baba once again sent the same message and Nana once again refused to oblige. After this happened 2-3 times, reluctantly Nana agreed to visit Baba.

A doubt lingered in his mind – Am I going to meet an ordinary Fakir or a true saint ? While this confusion harassed him, he asked his wife to give him his old coat. Wearing it, he set on the way to Shirdi. On nearing the place, he realized that he was empty handed. He was worried about what he should buy and where he can buy it – as Shirdi was a nondescript town. Thinking about this, he casually put his hand in the coat pocket. He was surprised to find a few Badams and a few pieces of Khadi-sakhar.

He started thinking, “How could this happen ? What a miracle it is ? Is Baba a Sadhu ?”

  • Shri Muktaram was a staunch devotee pf Shri Sai Baba. Sai Baba had given him a Kafni. He lived in Dixit Wada and kept a Dhuni. a few days after Baba's Mahasamadhi, he forcibly occupied Baba's Gadi in Dwarkamai, against the wishes of the villagers.

As soon as he sat there, he began to vomit blood and was taken to his residence in Dixit Wada. The devotees thought of taking him to the Kopergaon hospital; but before it could be decided as to who should accompany him, he died in Dixit Wada itself. His Samadhi is in Lendi Baug.

  • 3rd May, 1936.
Mama Dube (i.e.Kashinath Dube), Shopkeeper, Brahmin,
Poona, age 70 (whose statement is also reported in Sai Leela Masik,
    Vol, V., parts 2 and 3, p. 607) says:
I was at first quite indifferent to sadhus, saints etc., One day
about 1909, a lady took a loan of Rs.10 from me at Kopergaon where
I was and she promised to return it after she came back from
Aurangabad and she also told me that a great and powerful saint, Sai
Baba, lived at Shirdi. That was the first time I heard of him and I
vowed or thought that if the Rs.10 loan were returned (of which I
was not sure), it should be devoted to Sri Sai Baba. I went to
Aurangabad and unexpectedly the loan was returned. Later on, I went
to Shirdi and saw Sai Baba but did not mention my vow to him. He
asked me for dakshina 3 or 4 times on the first day of my visit, first
Rs.5, next Rs.2, next Rs.2, next one and did not ask me anything for
two days thereafter, though I saw him all the three days of my stay
there. His demand totalled Rs.10, just the amount I vowed, I would
    give him.

  • Kasinath Kanderao Garde, B.A., L.L.B., 65, Retired Sub Judge
of Nagpur, Congress Nagar, Nagpur, says:

Our family guru is a Ramachandra Tikotkar. My own personal
guru is Ramanand Bidkar Maharaj. He was deep in wisdom
and possessed marvellous powers and knowledge. After giving me
upadesh, he told me that I should go round seeing a number of great
souls, i.e. saints, taht he had seen in his tours, and he gave me a list of
them. He told me taht all these saints would feel they are of one
family and they would recognise me as connected with their stock
and accord me a hearty welcome. That would confirm me, he said,
in the belief of the truth and value of his instruction to me.
    195
One of these saints that I was ordered to visit was Sai Baba of Shirdi.
My guru Bidkar Maharaj in 1898 told me to visit him, saying that he
himself (B.M) had seen that saint (Sai Baba) 25 years back, i.e., about
1873. I went to see Sai Baba in 1912 or 1913 during the May vacation,
as I was then SubJudge at Khamgaon. As soon as I went and
saw him, without any introduction or announcement, Sai Baba welcomed
me heartily saying i.e., “Welcome Ramdas”. Ramdas is not
my name. But, the hearty welcome he gave me was in accordance
with that my Guru Ramanand Bidkar Maharaj asked me to expect
and the word ‘Ramdas’ I took to be reference to that guru, by whose
order I went to Shirdi and also to the earlier family guru, whose
name was Ramachandra. I stayed there with my college chum (of the
Deccan College) Bala Bhate, who lived there, at Shirdi, a life devoted
to Sai Baba. Each succeeding day, I tried to go but the journey was
put off, for 6 days as Baba said “Wait till tomorrow”. Meanwhile, I
had kept with me Rs.6 or 7 for the expenses of my return journey.
Sai Baba asked me first time a dakshina of Rs.2 and Rs.1 each
day for four days thereafter. On the next day thereafter, when I had
got Rs.0-3-6 left in my pocket, Baba said of his own knowledge,
“Why keep that Rs. 0-3-6 with you? Give that up as dakshina.
God will provide you with plenty”. I at once gave up the 0-3-6 I
had. Before I started for Shirdi, I was at Poona Reay Market and I
purchased three excellent ‘Payari’ mangoes for presentation to Sai
Baba, and as soon as I saw Sai Baba, I presented them. Sai Baba then
took them up, eyed them with joy and said they were nice looking
and ordered them to be cut up and he distributed the pieces as prasad
(taking a piece himself ). Before cutting the fruit, Sai Baba, out of his
own vast knowledge, said “Hallo! These fruits he (i.e. Garde) had
purchase in the market for me and has brought the whole lot to me,
without tasting any part of it. This is the opposite of what a pandit
did the other day. Pandit had got a whole packet of laddûs intending
to give them to me. But, on the way after bathing at the Godaari
River, he got hungry and ate away some of the laddûs and brought
me the remainder. These fruits are not or sesha like that”.
    196
This narration showed us (1) that he appreciated the pure
and strong bhakti that we, devotees, should have towards the guru,
avoiding the slight involved in presenting him with sesha and (2) that
by his (Sai Baba’s) knowledge, even of unseen events taking place far
away from Shirdi, he deepens and strengthens the faith and reliance
we place in him and in our guru. My faith in my guru’s teaching and
my adherence to him was deepened by all that Sai Baba said and did.
On the 8th day, I got Sri Sai’s permission and left Shirdi with
money lent me by Bala Saheb Bhate. Once, during those 8 days, I
saw a strange sight. Hari Sitaram Dixit had returned, after conducting
some big case and with a trunk full of solid silver rupees which
were his fees- it may be Rs.1000. He placed the trunk before Sai
Baba as an offering to Sai Baba. Baba dipped both his palms into the
silver heap and gave away palmful after palmful of rupees from the
trunk to fakirs and others, who were gathering there in crowds waiting
for such windfalls. The entire money was in a few minutes thus
gifted away. H.S.Dixit felt in no way disconcerted at the disappearance
    of his hard-earned cash.

  • BalaSaheb Bate:

A few words on Balasaheb Bhate may next be mentioned. At
college, he was a free thinker, a free smoker, a veritable charvaka,
whose creed may be thus summed up, “Eat, drink and be merry today,
for tomorrow we die’. Katr yatra Bhante tatra Dhumaha I used
to remark jocularly at his inveterate smoking being myself free of the
tobacco habit. He became mamlatdar and was a very efficient officer
much liked by his collector. He was Mamlatdar of Kopergoan for
about 5 years (1904-1909). All that time he was scoffing at his educated
friends (who met him on their way to Shirdi) having any respect
for Sai, whom Bhate described as ‘as a mad man’. The friends
asked him just to see Sai Baba once and then form his judgement. In
1909, Bhate camped at Shirdi and saw Sai Baba day after day. On the
fifth day Sai Baba covered him with a gerua garment. From taht day,
Bhate was a changed man. He did not care for earnings or work.
From taht day up to his death, he only wished to be at Shirdi, to do
seva to Sai Baba, to live and die in his presence. Sai Baba made
his friend Dixit draw up an application for leave for
one year and with Sai Baba’s help, Bhate’s signature was
    197
gut to it. The Collector gave him one year’s time to see if he would
return to his old self. But, at the end of the year, he still continued to
be ‘mad after his guru’ and was granted compassionate pension of
about 30 rupees as one afflicted with ‘religious melancholia’.
Asked fro the reason of his change, Bhate told me the putting
of the (Bhagawa) gerua garment on him by Sai Baba marked the
crisis. ‘By that’ he said, ‘my original frame of mind was removed and
in its place quite a new frame of mind was put in’. After taht attending
to worldly duties- especially official duties- became unthinkable.
He then lived at Shirdi, attending to his Nitya Karma, Upanishadreading
etc, before Sai (Sai would offer remarks on that reading occasionally).
His wife and family came to Shirdi and lived with him.

  • Experience of mainatai (Nanasaheb chandorkar's daughter) -

Minathai Ganesh Kulvalekar, daughter of Nanasaheb Ganesh
Chandorkar, age 49, near Kasba Ganpati Temple, Poona, says:
I am the elder of N.G.C’s daughters. I have two younger brothers.
Bapu, the younger is aged 40. When I was 12 or 13 years of age
(i.e. 1899-1900), I went to see Sai Baba long with others of our family
and went often late, not after 1918.
Chidambar Rao Gadgil Chitnis introduced my father to Sai
Baba when he was mamlatdar at Ghodnadi. An early incident was
this. We were staying at the chavadi. Leaving my father behind, the
rest of us were starting to leave Shirdi. Sai Baba came up and asked us
for biksha and said ‘Do not go’. Our journey was stopped. We gave
Baba, the wayside food we were taking for the sake of the children.
    Baba’s eyes sparkled like jewels.
I remember one or two instances of Sai Baba’s signifi198
cantly stopping or delaying my father’s journey. My father was starting
at the proper time to catch a train at Chitali, as he had to meet
the Collector. Baba permitted one Haridas to go for that train, but
stopped my father. Haridas in a hurry left without a meal. My father
took his meal leisurely and half an hour later than Haridas, My father
was permitted to go. He went and found that he was in time for
the train as the train was arriving late that day as timings had been
changed that day. My father told me about this later. This was about
    in 1900.
Myself and family were starting from Shirdi to attend a marriage
at Nasik, Baba first did not give us leave but said “Do not go”.
We had not got ready cooked food for the children to eat on the way
and thought that at Manmad, we might try to feed them. But the
train was derailed at the station before we reached Manmad and we
stopped there for three hours. Baba’s stoppage evidently indicated
this stoppage on the way and his final permission indicated all would
    be well.
My husband died of plague at Poona in 1904, when I was but
17 and there was no help for me. My mother arrived in time to see
him alive. I had just then conceived. In 1905, when I was in advanced
pregnancy with serious difficulty at Jamner, was the Gosavi
incident and Baba’s udhi. But, I knew nothing of it then, in my pain.
In 1908, we were at Pandharpur. My brother Bapu Rao, as a little
child of 4, went daily in the morning, placed a flower on Sai Baba’s
head and worshipped him. That was the beginning of the regular
worship of Baba, as others were not permitted till then to do what
Bapu did. Before that there was no regular system of daily worship of
    Baba.
When I was 18 or 19 , in about 1906, some one was taking
darshan of Sai, with spectacles on and they dropped. Someone present
said that the glasses should be offered to Baba as a gift. But Baba said,
“I do not want glasses. My glasses and worth Rupees 40.” My
father interpreted to us “glasses as self-realization and worth Rs.40 as
occurred 40 years ago”. Baba looked about fifty and was gray when I
went first in 1900 to Shirdi. He continued more or less the same up
to 1918. His death was during the influenza epidemic (1918-19)
    that raged throughout India.
    199
The following facts I learnt from my father:
    1. Sai Baba had known him for 3 or 4 generations.
    2. Sai Baba was constantly using the word “Narayan” in his
talks thus -Narayan Teli, Narayan Dhobi &c. N.G.Chandorkar inferred
that Sai Baba must have been a Brahmin Sanyasi, as Brahmin
Sanyasis must constantly be saying ‘Narayan’.
    3. Gita was repeated by Sai Baba. Sai Baba knew Sanskrit.
My father was orthodox and never drank the tirtha of Sai
Baba. H.S.Dixit and others took it. About 1899 or 1900, my mother’s
sister’s husband Balasaheb Binnewale (who died 5 or 6 years back)
went to see Sai Baba without any faith in Sai Baba, out of a desire to
oblige my father. Balasaheb was a worshipper of Datta. When he
went and saw Sai Baba, he saw him as a figure with three heads (i.e.)
as Datta himself. He, at once, believed that Sai was Datta himself
and continued a devotee of Sai till his death.

  • Vinayak Daji Bhave, Brahmin, aged 37, Shirol Kolhapur State,
    says:
    I was a clerk in 1932 in the B.B.C.I.Rly.Co.on Rs.90 per month
My palm was read by one sãdhu and he said ‘SaiBaba is your guru’. In 1933, my son had plague and he recovered by
the use of Baba’s udhi alone.I knew of Sai Baba even in 1916.My mother Annapoornabai Daji Bhave went to Shirdi. There whenshe tried to enter the mosque, Sai Baba prevented her saying it wouldpollute the mosque. When she returned to yeola, she received a card from Yootmal that her daughter-in-law (i.e., my brother’s wife) had died on a particular date- which was the day before my mother’s visit to the Shirdi mosque. She had to observe ten day’s pollution from that day and was under 10 days pollution when she was at Shirdi. She did not know it then. But Baba knew it evidently.

  • Cursetji Shapurji Pestonjamas, Parsi, aged 75 Kolaba
Khusrubad, Baug, formerly in Railway Service and Yard Master, Reclamation,
    says:
I went to Shirdi and saw Sai Baba, and stayed there for three or four days. That was the only time I saw him. I and my brother-inlaw went there and were accommodated on the ground-floor of Dixit’s
Wada while mine owners and other rich people were accommodated upstairs. As we went and sat at the mosque before Sai Baba, this thought was in our mind, though we did not express it (viz)
“What sort of justice is here, in this durbar! Big people enjoying comforts above and poor people left downstairs to suffer inconvenience’. Then Sai Baba told some one present: ‘Take these people up’, and we were given accommodation upstairs. This was at once proof of Baba’s reading
our hearts and of his love of equality and justice. When we left him finally, he came out and graciously waved his hand, as sort of ‘God speed’ to us.
Except this, I have no experience of Sai Baba. I believe he is God.

  • Mukunda Sastri Lele, C/O Krishna Sastri, age 58, Vydik life,
Konkanast Brahmin, Sanivar Peth, Poona, says:
In 1912, I was often at Shirdi with Sai Baba. I once went with Nanasaheb Chandorkar in a tonga; the horse reared. The carriage fell down. I and Nana came off without hurt. Then Baba at Shirdi did the Sanka sound and said ( ------) (i.e., “Nana is now about to die. But, will I let him die?) 8 days later, I and Chandorkar went to Shirdi. Then Bapusaheb Jog told me that Baba cried out as above 8 days back and asked me ‘Was that true?’ ‘Yes’, I replied and narrated the facts.

  • Balakistna Ramachandra Khairikar, Brahmin, Vydiki life, aged 70, Khairi (3 miles off Chitale) says:

When I first heard of Sai Baba, it was that he was a mad man. That was 35 years ago or thereabout. But when everybody began to talk of him  and as some of the Brahmins of Shirdi (eg.Appa Kulkarni) are connected with me, I went to see him. I was a hereditary village officer. The Government dispensed with our services in 1916, Formerly people used to visit Shirdi along Chitale, Jalgaon, Rampur, Nathpatlacha, Wadi, Pimpalwadi, Shirdi route. That road not being in use is not now to be found.I saw Baba using water instead of oil for his panthis (lamps). Deshpande Master of Danderpur was often hearing Baba talk. I know nothing of what Baba said. Once in 1908, when I went to Baba, a coin a pice I
trod upon at the mosque. I picked it up and delivered it to Baba saying ‘Keep this safe. This is you coin’. He returned it to me saying ‘That is all right. Take this coin home. Keep it in your pooja, along with he images you worship. You will have prosperity. I took it and worshipped it. For three years, (i.e) till
1911, I had prosperity. Formerly, I could not get even rice for a night meal. But after I started the worship, I save so much from my earnings as Kulkarni, that my wife could get gold bangles (i.e., wristlets).
Then when I travelled and came under pollution I delivered my study book (Pothi) with the pice in it to a friend and some days later, I found the pice was lost. Since then (1911) misfortune dogs my heels.I first lost my wife in six months of losing the coin. In 1916 I lost my service. In 1917-18, I lost my mother. I am now begging for my food. I visit Shirdi on each Ramnavami.
