Role of a guru in life of one's devotee

  • Hi All,

It's an accepted fact of those who believe in hindu religion that the present state of our lives are results of past karma or samskaras. I would like to know what role does a guru or god play in this respect. How would they affect these karmas or samskaras of our life.
My father was a devotee of Sai Baba of Shirdi. Sai Baba is renowned over the world as avadhoota who performed miracles all through his life. My father was devoted to him and used to perform bhajans every thursday, visit shirdi often and all. He wrote 108 songs on sai baba and wanted to publish them. In 2004, he suffered paralytic stroke. He lost his speech, his right side limbs are both paralyzed. He has been that way ever since and even now he is still in the same state. Now what has Sai Baba done to prevent this. Or do the god or these gurus have no power to mingle with one's karma or samskaras? Then why should we worship them at all. I have a job and I am supporting my parents now. Is this what Sai Baba could do at the most ? - that his devoteee will not fall on roads for begging? What can any guru or god do at all is my dilemma these days.

    Thanks Friends

  • My dear,

It's an accepted fact of those who believe in hindu religion that the present state of our lives are results of past karma or samskaras. I would like to know what role does a guru or god play in this respect. How would they affect these karmas or samskaras of our life.

Your question is not the first time I have heard or even thought of this myself. I was surrounded by Baba worshipers even before I turned one. My grandparents were very devoted to Baba.

Guru is the keeper and palan har as they say. Karma is your action. There is a concept of free will and Kismat.... Kismat is something you get as a result of your past actions or Karmas. Kismat brings you to a path where you have to choose but free will determines your future course. Here is an example: You are destined to get admission into a desired school. But it is your freewill to apply or not to apply. Your future course is determined by your choice or Karma... If you went to college then you work at an MNC earn great and financially you are well-off... On the other hand, if you choose to stay away you get a mediocre job and financial struggle… So do you see this distinction?

Now… If you selected the route where you did not go to school and have Baba as your guru you will can be rest assured that your family will have its food and the basics will be taken care of in your home. This has been my experience… Even when times were tough for me and my family Baba would make sure we got food and not just any food… GREAT food from somewhere.. may be a relative may be family member. I have lived this.

My grandmother is a great devotee too. today  she is so bad health wise and  mentally insane. She was once a very powerful business woman. People still remember what clout she had. Today she cannot even identify when she wants to go to the rest room… Why am I sharing this with you? Because it is not just your father but a way of life. We all have to reapwhat we sow… Read the story of Dr. Pillay and the guinea worms.. he was supposed to suffer for a long time but Baba helped him with the suffering. A guru does not negate the Karmic effort completely. He makes it bearable or gives the devotee the strength to bear it. Sai or any other god is not here to prevent your suffering… They are here to ease it and help you finish it so that you are now on a greater spiritual plane.

Think of Krishna… He was GOD himself.. Why did he become Arjunas Sarthi and have that war when with a swish of his little finger he could make it all go away? There are rules in this universe and things work according to them. God does not interfere with it but mends around it so that his devotees can uplift themselves spiritually. It is very hard to comprehend but when you do get this concept you will realize what I say.
Baba WILL not prevent your father from incurring his due for his karma and foranyone else… He will make it such that he will be comfortable despite his condition. My dear boy, your father has you and that is Baba’s gift. Imagine his life if you were not his support? If he had no support then you can cry FOUL.

Then why should we worship them at all. I have a job and I am supporting my parents now. Is this what Sai Baba could do at the most ? - that his devoteee will not fall on roads for begging? What can any guru or god do at all is my dilemma these days.

A guru is worshipped for spiritual upliftment. Remember Baba says….”I give you first what you want so later I can give you what I want” What Baba has done for your father is despite his sad condition? baba has ensured that he has a family to feed him. YES he is not on the roads because a paralytic person cannot beg my dear man. A son like Shravan is a gift in this day and age. Have you not looked around what is going on in India or any other place with the aged? Remember you or I cannot tell what your father was destined to suffer as a result of past actions. But learn to realize that Guru is the keeper—He gave you the ability to support your parents… Imagine if you were without a job and helpless? When we are in trouble our mind cannot think in different ways and rationalize or sometimes our ego makes us feel I am doing everything where is Baba? But baba is that silent force making you work and giving you the punya of taking care of your parents. Baba is the force ensuring that even in such a bad condition your father is living decently. It is hard to see people we love in misery.. I can relate to this so yes I am in a position to share my thoughts with you and I have.  It is our Karma as well that we have to suffer seeing our loved ones suffer.

May sai bless you and your family. I will pray for your dad as well when I pray to Baba.
    Om Sai Ram.
