Benefits of Fasting

  • Benefits of Fasting:

Fasting, For me it is moreover a technique to Strengthen will power.

Nowadays, many educated people do not observe fasting on this sacred day. This is due to the impact of the dark, vicious, materialistic forces. When the intellect develops a little, people begin to enter into arguments and unnecessary discussions. Intellect is a hindrance on the spiritual path. They who have not developed the heart but who have developed their intellect begin to doubt and question at every step. They are led astray. They want a "why" and a "how" for everything. They want "scientific" explanations for all phenomena.

God is beyond proofs and presumptions. One has to approach religion and the scriptures with great faith, reverence and purity of heart. Then only are the secrets of religion revealed unto him like the apple in the palm of one's hand. Does anybody ask his mother to prove who is his father?

Fasting controls passion. It checks the emotions. It controls the senses also. It is a great penance. It purifies the mind and the heart. It destroys a multitude of sins. Fasting controls the tongue in particular which is the deadliest enemy of man. Fasting overhauls the respiratory, circulatory, digestive and urinary systems. It destroys all the impurities of the body and all sorts of poisons. It eliminates uric acid deposits. Just as impure gold is rendered pure by melting it in the crucible again and again, so also this impure mind is rendered purer by repeated fasting.

Young and robust Brahmacharis (celibates) should observe fasting whenever passion troubles them. Only then will they have very good meditation, as the mind will be rendered calm. The chief object of fasting is to render the system calm so that one is able to practise meditation rigorously during that period.

Withdraw the senses and fix the mind on God. Pray to God to guide you and to throw a flood of light on your spiritual path. Say with feeling: "O God, guide me! Protect me, protect me! I am Thine, I am Thine! Forsake me not!" You will be blessed with purity, light and strength. Follow this Sadhana on the days that you fast, Ekadashi days in particular.

Fasting is one of the ten canons of Yoga. However, avoid excessive fasting. It will produce weakness. Use your common sense. If you cannot fast for the full twenty-four hours, at least fast for 10-12 hours and then take some milk and fruit. Gradually increase your fast to 15 hours and then up to 24 hours. Fasting makes a man strong, both spiritually and mentally.

In his code, the Manu Smriti, the great Hindu lawgiver, Manu, prescribes fasting for the removal of the five capital sins. Diseases that are pronounced incurable by doctors are cured by fasting. Occasionally, a complete fast is greatly desirable for all to keep up good health, to give adequate rest to the internal organs and maintain celibacy. All diseases have their origin in overeating and verily fasting is the only method to cure this.

Complete fasting helps to control sleep. Taking recourse to tea to control sleep is not desirable. You will not gain any spiritual strength if you depend on an external agent. During fasting avoid all company. Live alone. Utilise your time in Sadhana. When breaking a fast do not take a heavy meal or a heavy food that is hard to digest. Milk or some fruit juice is beneficial.

Moderation in eating and withdrawal of the senses in Yogic meditation are the obverse and the reverse of the same coin. Moderation consists in taking a little food or water just to keep the body in good working order.

In the Gita you will find: "Verily, Yoga is not for him who eats too much, nor who abstains to excess, nor who sleeps too much, nor to the excessively wakeful".

The Yogi withdraws his senses from the particular sense objects. The senses are made to turn into or get involved into the mind. When one is fully established in these two practices, supreme control of the senses is achieved.

Once there was a demon, Mura, who oppressed the gods. The gods approached Lord Hari for protection. Hari sent Yoga Maya to kill the demon. Yoga Maya carried out the behests of the Lord successfully.

Then the Lord said to Yoga Maya, "Those who observe Ekadashi will be freed from all sins, and you will be called by the name Ekadashi."

King Ambarisha was a great votary of Lord Hari. He practised the Ekadashi Vrata for a year. Ambarisha obtained His Grace. On one occasion he fasted for three consecutive days. He was about to break the fast when Rishi Durvasa appeared as his guest. The king received him with due respect and requested him to take his meals. The Rishi agreed and went to bathe in the river. The king waited patiently for a long time, but the Rishi did not return. Time was running out; if the king did not eat anything before the day ended his Vrata would not bear fruit. And if he ate, he would be showing disregard to the Rishi. As a compromise the king took a little water to serve both the conditions.

When Durvasa returned from his bath, he knew exactly what had happened, and was angry. He tore a hair from his tuft and charged it to kill Ambarisha. The king was unmoved. The discus of Lord Vishnu destroyed the power of the hair of Durvasa. It now followed the Rishi wherever he went and tried to destroy him.

Rishi Durvasa went to Brahma and Shiva for help, but to no avail. He went to Lord Hari who said to him, "I am dependent on My devotees. My heart is in the possession of My devotees. Go thou, therefore, to Ambarisha; beg his pardon and thou shalt be saved."

Ambarisha thereupon prayed to the charged hair to desist from its course, and saved the Rishi. Durvasa thanked him from the bottom of his heart.

I dont agree to it fully. To question in the right spirit is the key. Without understanding, there is only blind belief. Blind belief is just that - it is blind, i.e. it has no understanding as its basis. Such belief usually fails us. And hence, its better to inquire and to question for the purpose of understanding.

    Even Bhagwadgita says :

    Tatvidhi Pranipatein, Pariprasnena Sevaya
    Updekshyanti te (a)gnanam, gninah tatvadarshinah.[/b]

This body is made of 33 crores devtas. If one things "fasting" is just not "eating food", then by not eating food, one is hurting all the 33 crore devtas. Then is it spirituality ?

There should be, as in everything else in spirituality, a deeper meaning for the word "fasting" !

Again, full faith will only come with full understanding.

But yes,  I do accept, there are many so called "intellectuals" who dont want to beleive anything related to "God or spirituality". They will believe their own blind beliefs but not God. They want result without experimentation. They are not scientist, they are people with not even the least bit of common sense.

Scriptures say do this .. do this .. do this .. and see God for yourself. And these people says scriptures are wrong, Gurus dont exist, God is a myth.

  • Real Meaning of Fasting

Upavasa (Fasting) means forgetting food, when you are immersed in God. (Upa = Near God, Vasa = Immersed). But today people are fasting by force, suffering with hunger. This is not Upavasa. When you do such fasting, Yogi Vemana says ‘Kuudu Vidachi Malamu Kudchura Upavasai’. This means a little excretory matter is left over in the digestive system after motion. When you fast the digestive system assimilates this little excretory matter. So on that fasting day, one has eaten the excretory matter instead of food! Similarly if you do not get sleep due to thinking of God, that is ‘Jagaranam’ (Not sleeping in the night. But people are stopping their sleep by force.

There should not be force to stop eating or sleeping. If they are stopped without force, automatically due to immersion in God and then only ‘Upavasa’ and ‘Jagaranam’ are fruitful. Aspiring some benefit, people are doing Upavasa and Jagaranam by force. Such acts are waste and useless. The right knowledge is necessary in any religious deed.

  • Thanks for Good Explanation.

In kalyuga Fasting is more over a fashion. To realize truth just see after navratras rush on hotels & resutarants (Specially Serving Non-Veg). People rush to food like just left from prison hungry for many days. What is use of such type of fasting. Fasting is just to rest body, still mind and spiritual growth  by enhancing will power & concentration enabling to meditate on the name of God. Otherwise it is not more than dieting.

May Sai Bless all to fast to feed their hungry souls of Sai Naam!

  • Veda says that even a single particle of the food should not be wasted

Donation is very dangerous like double edged knife. Donating to undeserving persons is very big sin and not mere wastage. Today, if you see the feast of a marriage function, you will find most of the plates after feast are full of food items leftover. When you throw this food, it becomes a source for bacteria and virus, which may harm even good people in the society. Thus, the people, who have thrown the food, become sinners. The owner of feast, who gave this expensive food to them is also another sinner and will be punished by the divine law. Both doer and promoter are equally punished (Kartha karaiyitaa chaiva...). Finally the married couple is also affected. Veda says that even a single particle of the food should not be wasted (Annamna parichakshita...). Once, in a function, the people were wasting food and the beggars on the other side were searching for the food in the leaves thrown away after the feast. One devotee asked Bhagavan Shri Satya Sai Baba like this, “O Swami! What is this! In your creation I find people throwing food on one side and people searching for the thrown food on the other side”. Bhagavan Baba replied “Those beggars were also rich in the previous birth and threw the food like these rich people. They are now born as beggars and are searching for the food thrown by them in the past”. Therefore, the minimum eligibility of the receiver of food is: not to throw even an iota of food.

There is a greater picture out here. Even eating food is a wastage ... If the energy so derived is not used for the right reasons.

Whether the food is thrown outside or inside, if not utilized properly its waste.

  • God and energy

God is the absolute truth. Energy is the absolute truth in the field of relativity. Energy is also a relative truth but being the final truth in the ladder of relativity, it is also called as absolute truth within the sphere of relativity or creation. The word ‘Sat’, which means the absolute truth, can be used for both God and Energy but, the difference is to be realized. In the presence of God, Energy can never be absolute truth. But, when God is not referred, Energy happens to be the absolute truth within the boundaries of the creation. The second Chapter of the Gita deals with the Soul, which is only Energy. In this chapter, God is not referred at all. Hence, in this context, the Energy is mentioned as the absolute truth. With reference to Energy, a form of an object is a relative truth only. Hence, Lord says that a non-existent thing like form (Asat) is always non-existent (Naasato Vidyate Bhavah…).

The Energy is the existing basis of the creation and hence, exists always (Nabhavo Vidyate Satah…). But, Scholars, who have realized God, treat both these Energy and form as relative things only with reference to God and therefore, both are non-existent with reference to God. Both these constitute Cause and Effect parts in the creation. Both these (Creation) have beginning since they were created by God. If God wishes both these disappear and will have end (Ubhayorapi Drushtontah…). Some Scholars have taken the meaning of ‘Sat’ here as God and faced the danger of ending to God also. To avoid this danger, they tried to change the meaning of the word ‘end’. The Veda also says that ‘Sat’ was generated (Sadajayata…). The Veda says that God, indicated by the word ‘non-existent’ (Asat) existed before the generation of Energy (Sat). Here, the word ‘non-existent’ (God) means that God is not Energy or Existent. People, who need the proof of existence grasped by means like senses, mind and intelligence, think that Energy is God. Though Energy is not grasped by senses like eyes, Energy is visualized with powerful microscopes. Therefore, Scientists treat Energy as the ultimate God creating, maintaining and destroying the Universe. Even matter is a form of Energy (Primordial Energy). The matter and the form or shape constitutes the body. With reference to matter, the form of the body is relative. Thus, within the limits of the body, matter is absolute truth and form is relative truth. But, both these (body) are relative with reference to the basic energy (soul). The second chapter of the Gita deals with the soul and body. The Gita clearly says that soul is eternal (absolute truth) with reference to the body only (Na hanyate hanyamane shareere…). The Advaita Philosophers are not at all different from Scientists because the soul treated as God by them is nothing but Energy.

I am not going into the definition of God and Energy as based on Vedas ! Neither am I competent enough to do that, nor do I think that I need to know it in detail !

I am talking of something which is very close to each one us, something which Baba demonstrated in His life. Baba said that He had to account for every pie that came to Him. Baba took Dakshina, only so that He help the devotees materially as well as spiritually. Karma is the law of the universe. In my opinion, its Karma that decides duty. Those who dont follow their duties (spending the Energy gained by eating food in the right manner) are not doing their duty.

Whether that food is eaten or thrown, it doesnt matter. Wastage is wastage.

  • Good observation and guidelines for those waste food. (sepecially on the cost of others money)

Donation of food to deserving. Good point. Many times people bag for money to buy food, but they use that money for wine/drugs.

Once I offered my lunch to a beggar, but he insisted for money. Told today i don't want to eat  chapati, But Rice. Sense of taste work equally for everyone.

My personal feeling is donation of food to a hungry human and a animal will not get discriminated. If there is no begger, insted of throwing left food in dustbin, can be used for animals.

Using your energy for God’s work
You are like an inverter (an emergency backup power supply) with limited energy and limited working time. You can use the current to run the essential fan and light bulb in your house. The remaining current can be used for the temple (mission of God). This is the stage of saints (monks). The next stage is that apart from the essential fan and light bulb, you use some current for watching the television for a little time only. The remaining current is then given to the temple. This is the stage of a householder. If one does not give any current to the temple and uses the inverter entirely for his house and spends all the current for not just the essential fan and light bulb but also for watching the television throughout the night, then it is the state of the demon. Thus a saint needs minimum for his own sake and uses all the rest of his energy for God’s work.

A householder uses the minimum and also little more for his own enjoyment in the world, but spends the remaining energy for God. A demon spends all his energy only for enjoyment in the world and never thinks about the Lord. The Gita explains these three types as angels, human beings and devils.

Bingo Saib ji. Very correct. Not just animals, even microbes like bacteria will make use of that food. You might have prepared extra food thats not a problem. Its your attitude with which you leave the extra food. If you leave it for the benefit of the universe, deserving people will come and use that food. Even Baba asked Nana to follow kakabali.

Whether one is a householder, trying to be a sannyasi or brahmachari, correct use of resources is the KEY. You eat- dont eat, throw -dont throw, keep - dont keep, anything is right for the right reason.
