    14. The causes of rebirth are desire and ignorance.

    15. A Jivanmukta is always in Samadhi even during all sorts of action.

    16. Hook the fish of desire by abstinence. Remove the darkness of ignorance by the light of knowledge.

    17. Samadhi is the highest bliss. It is the experience of the light of the Absolute and the end of all relative existence.

    18. ‘OM’ is a guide for the knowledge of the Self and a key to unlock the door of Moksha.

    19. Liberation is not merely the absence of all misery. It is a state of Bliss.

    20. Moksha is the realisation of the non-dualistic, pure consciousness. It is a state of desirelessness.

  • CULTIVATE VIRTUES

Forgiveness is the greatest virtue which shines forth in all its splendour in the devotee. Courage and patience are the twin qualities of a real aspirant. Humility is the highest of all virtues. God helps you only when you feel truly humble. Humility is not cowardice. It is meekness and not weakness. Humility and meekness are indeed spiritual powers. Make patience thy strength. Assert it. Feel it. Will it.

Non‑attachment comes very slowly. It gives a new sense of freedom and peace. Anger is the worst fire. Lust is an all‑consuming fire. Both will scorch you. Extinguish these fires through love and purity. Meditate. Think: "I am the fearless, immortal soul". Then fear will vanish.

True love is the greatest power on earth. It rules without a sword and binds without a cord. To love God is to love all. To love all is to love God. Spread the message of love. Practice cosmic love. Love all. Embrace all. Be kind to all. This will remove jealousy, hatred, etc. To love all is the secret of self‑realisation and liberation.

The four fundamental virtues are patience, adaptability, kind speech and pure conduct. Justice, temperance, courage and wisdom are also great virtues. Virtue is the golden key which opens the gate to the abode of eternal bliss.

Cultivate divine virtues such as purity, courage, humility, self‑restraint, non‑violence truth, mercy, faith , etc. Be virtuous. You are on the way to wisdom. In the garden of your heart plant the lily of love, the rose of purity, the champaka of courage, the mandara of humility and the lady‑of‑the‑night of compassion.

Virtue is knowledge. Virtue is excellence. Knowledge is the ripe fruit of the fine flower of virtue. Think well. All saints teach that you must do good in thought and word and deed. This is the principle of morality.

Excellence is not a destination;it is a continuous journey that never ends.
A Person, who has controlled his mind, can achieve any success in his life. How far you are trying to control your mind?
The mind that judges not others ever remains tension-free.

  • The Law Of Karma

    What Is Karma?

Karma means not only action, but also the result of an action. The consequence of an action is really not a separate thing. It is a part of the action, and cannot be divided from it. Breathing, thinking, talking, seeing, hearing, eating, etc., are Karmas. Thinking is mental Karma. Karma is the sum total of our acts both in the present life and in the preceding births.

Any deed, any thought that causes an effect, is called a Karma. The Law of Karma means the law of causation. Wherever there is a cause, there an effect must be produced. A seed is a cause for the tree which is the effect. The tree produces seeds and becomes the cause for the seeds.

  • Sai Baba of Shirdi never sleeps

Was reading an interview of Sri Martand Mhalsapati, the son of Mhalsapati, the devotee of Sai Baba who accompanied Sai Baba most of the time and also slept with Sai Baba in Masjid (Dwarkamai) and Chavadi. Martand Mhalsapati's age was around 100 years while this interview was taken. On questioning about how long he served Sai Baba the answer was that he served Sai Baba with his father (Mhalsapati, Much known devotee of Sai Baba) till the age of 45 years.

One of the questions put to him was that It is said that Sa Baba was never seen sleeping. They say that He was always awake! What would you like to say?

Answer : Sai Baba use to lie down in half-lying posture, supporting his head on his hand thus only relaxing. My father (Mhalsapati) use to press his limbs. Some times my father felt drowsy in the middle of the night and the pressure of the hands on Sai Baba's limbs relaxed Sai Baba would strike him with his Satka

Satka : (Short Stick which Sai Baba always use to keep with him, one of which was presented to Mhalsapati, and can still be seen at Mhalsapati's home in Shirdi and other one is kept in Samadhi Mandir (Temple) and on every Thursdays kept with Sai Baba's footwear at the feet of Idol with the picture placed in Chavadi, all of this taken in a huge procession after the night Arati, from Samadhi Temple to Chavadi again).

The posture of head resting on hand in half lying posture brings the similar posture of lord Vishnu shown in pictures, that of Gautam Buddha and few more enlightened souls.

Also Sai Baba of Shirdi is known for the unique, miraculous, activities. Which brings to the mind the mention of Sai Baba sleeping on the plank of wood suspended, on the ceiling of the Masjid. In Sai SatCharitra it is stated that " Mr. Nanasaheb Dengale brought, for Sai Baba, a wooden plank, amount 4 cubits in length and only a span in breath, for sleeping upon." :) this brings to mind, that what was it that inspired Nanasaheb Dengale to bring such a piece of wood to sleep upon and seeing the size mentioned, it would in no way a comfortable place to sleep on. And Sai Baba, no wonder he was consider Crazy Fakir in the beginning and even afterwards by very few, accepted and hung it like a swing with few slender pieces of torn clothes. Das Ganu Maharaj another eminent devotee of Sai Baba of Shirdi, who had witnessed Sai Baba sleeping upon this plank wondered how the plank was suspended so high i.e. about 7 to 8 feet above the floor and 1 to two cubits below the roof.

We can still see the place where it was hung in Dwarkamai it we care to look upward just after the Dhuni ends and in front of the Nimbar.

Also it is mentioned that four earthen lamps were put loosely on the four corners of the plank. The strength of the rags with which the plank was suspended were just good enough to bear the weight of the plank and the earthen lamps placed on them. This shows us the command of Sai Baba over his physical body. Firstly it would have needed aviation of the body to reach on the plank, and also aviation required to stay on the plank looking at the strength of the rags that supported the plank, also the loosely put earthen lamp would fall down on the slightest swing we can assume. Sai Baba would have been staying there with aviation of his physical body and bestowing grace for his devotees from there.

Naturally after few people of Shirdi including Das Ganu saw Sai Baba sleeping in this unusual manner, people began to wonder how Sai Baba climbed up the plank and came down but none could discovered it, upon people trying to see this wonderful and miraculous feat, Sai Baba one day got enraged and broke the plank and threw it away and continued to sleep(?) on the floor.

Also mentioned in Sri Sai SatCharitra chapter 45 "Once Baba was describing the greatness or importance of this plank to Kakasaheb. Hearing this the latter said to Sai Baba "If You still love the wooden plank, I will again suspend or hang up one in the Masjid again for You to sleep at ease." Sai Baba replied - "I won't like to sleep up, leaving Mhalasapati down on the ground." Then Kakasaheb said "I will provide another plank for Mhalasapati."

Sai Baba "How can he sleep on the plank? It is not easy to sleep up on the plank. He who has many good qualities in him can do so. He who can sleep 'with his eyes wide open' can effect that. When I go to sleep I ask often Mhalasapati to sit by My side, place his hand on My heart and watch the 'chanting of the Lord's name' there, and if he finds Me sleepy, wake Me up. He can't do even this. He himself gets drowsy and begins to nod his head.

When I feel his hand heavy as a stone on My heart and cry out - 'Oh Bhagat', he moves and opens his eyes. How can he, who can't sit and sleep well on the ground and whose asana (posture) is not steady and who is a slave to sleep, sleep high up on a plank?

A Person, who has controlled his mind, can achieve any success in his life. How far you are trying to control your mind?
The mind that judges not others ever remains tension-free.

  • 1-21.   But for the merit of some good deeds of our past births, how could we have been so compellingly drawn to Your holy feet, which have proved to be our sole refuge?
1-37.   As for you, O my listeners! I make my obeisance to you respectfully, as I pray for your undivided attention.  Unless you are attentive, how can I be happy?
1-38.   The greater the connoisseur a listener is, waiting eagerly for more and more, the grater is the enthusiasm and verve of the speaker, as he goes on narrating.
1-42.   My own heart tells me that before You, I am but a piece of straw.  And yet, I beseech You to be gracious and accept me with all my faults.
1-43.   And now, let us remember our Sadguru and worship His feet with love and devotion.  With body, speech and mind, let us surrender to Him, who is the mainspring of all wisdom and inspiration.
1-49.   O Sadguru, You defy all comparison; for, to whichever object you are likened, You already pervade it, by virtue of natural attributes.  Whatever object the eye falls upon, is but a form assumed by Yourself.
1-51.   My obeisance to You, O Greatest among the Gurus, who are in auspiciousness, the Soul Beautiful!
1-53.   Hail to you, O Sadguru, O treasure-house of kindness and mercy! Glory be to You, who are Brahma-Vishnu-Mahesh, and Dattatreya, who wanders at will on the banks of Godavari! I bow to You in obeisance!
1-55.   Bow your  head before Him in reverence; with your hands, press his feet gently; let your eyes gaze into His face intently, and, the nose inhale the fragrance of the water that washes His feet.
1-56.   Let the ears listen to the praises of Sai constantly, and keeping ties of worldly life will then fall off, automatically.
1-57.   With devotion, offer at the Sadguru’s feet your body, mind, worldly wealth, —everything, and dedicate your entire life in the service of the guru.
1-59.   Great is the power of all these, For they urge the devotee onwards, even without his knowing it, pushing him to the very threshold of Moksha.  This has been tried and tested by those of single-minded devotion.
1-62.   The Sacred name of the Sadguru is our Veda-Shastra; ‘Sai Samarth’ is our ‘mantra’ or the sacred chant.  It is also our only ‘yantra’ and ‘tantra’.
1-74.   O Gururaya! O Bliss Incarnate! You are my ultimate destination.  You alone, are my repose, for only You can relive the pain and suffering of this affected one.
1-78.   Ever since Sai, very kindly, conferred His grace on me I have been thinking only of Him day and night.  That itself will destroy the fear of worldly life.
1-79.   No more for me the chanting of other mantras, not yet, any other penance! I see only the pure, manifest form of Shri Sai, all the time.
1-80.   Gazing into Sai’s face, hunger, thirst—everything is forgotten.  What worldly pleasure can stand comparison to it?  The trials and tribulations of worldly life are forgotten altogether.
1-81.   Looking into Baba’s eyes, one forgets one’s self.  And, as the love wells up from within, the mind is immersed into inexpressible joy.
1-82.   To me service at Sai’s feet is everything; —karma and dharma, Shastras and Puranas, yoga and ritual sacrifice, and, the performance of prescribed religious ceremonies, pilgrimages, penance, —everything!
1-88.   To express one’s devotion by performing pooja, is the way prescribed by Vyasa, the son of the sage Parashar, and is another form of devotion, called ‘Archan-Bhakti’.
1-93.   After the ritual is over, the consciousness of the Supreme Spirit should be regained in your heart.

2-34.   Sai’s Life’ is a grate ocean—boundless, infinite, a mine of precious gems; which I, a tiny Titwi (Lapwing) bird is endeavoring to empty.  How can this ever come about?
2-35.   Sai’s Life is thus unfathomable, which it is just impossible to recount fully and satisfactorily.  One should therefore, be content to narrate as much of it as one can, and to the best of one’s ability.
2-43.   Even a few words of these stories, falling on the ear casually, are enough to make the misfortunes of a creature, recede, at once.  If then, the entire story is heard, with reverence and faith, a simple, trusting devotee will surely and easily cross the ocean of worldly life.
2-46.   Those who have not had the actual darshan of Baba, to pacify their eyes, may at least gain some merit by listening to the stories of his greatness.
2-56.   The words that came out of Sai’s mouth are as sweet as nectar.  How can I describe their beauty and charm? Listening to them, the heart will be filled with supreme bliss.
2-79.   “When ego and conceit are totally resolved, leaving, not even a trace behind, it is then that I will dwell in him, writing the book with my own hand.
2-80.   “When listening, reflection or writing is begun with this thought firmly governing it, then that work will be accomplished by myself, while he (Dabholkar) will only be made my instrument.
2-84.   “When heard with virtuousness and a good feeling, these stories will generate devotion in the listeners’ minds; self-experience and bliss will then follow most naturally and a state of perpetual joy will thus be attained.
    197.   Sai alone is our prosperity; Sai is our total consciousness of Bliss.  He alone is our lasting detachment from worldly affections.  And even our ultimate Refuge is none but Shri Sai!

3-3.   “If my ‘leelas’ are recorded, then any sins committed through ignorance will be dissipated.  And when these are listened to, with faith and devotion, the cares and troubles of worldly life will be forgotten.
3-4   “Waves of love and devotion will surge on the ocean of listening, diving again and again, into which, will bring gems of wisdom into your hands.”
3-11.   “Moreover, one thing I tell you, Shama (Madhavrao Deshpande), I grant all the wishes of him who chants my name with love and faith, which, in turn, enhances his devotion to me.
3-13.   “All the devotees who are attached to me, heart and soul, will naturally be delighted, listening to these stories.
3-14.    “Whoever sings my praises in a kirtan, to him I shall give total, perfect happiness, peace and contentment, always.  This is my promise.
3-15.    “He who gives himself up to me with single-minded devotion, and sings my praises with full faith, remembers me and contemplates on me, the deliverance of him is my promise.
3-17.   “Even if my stories are merely listened to, all the diseases will be cured.  And I shall pull out my devotee from the jaws of death.
3-18.   “Listen to the stories with reverence; reflect upon them deeply.  After reflection, contemplate on them.  This will bring great satisfaction.
3-20.    “Repetition of the name “Sai, Sai” will burn down sins, resulting from the evil desires of kaliyug.  A mere prostration before me is enough to destroy the past sins of speech and hearing.”
3-25.   In the days to come, some will build ashrams; some, temples; others will construct a ghat on the river-bank, too! But let us follow the beaten track and read Sai’s life-story.
3-53.   Restraint and control over the mind and the senses in Kritayuga, ritual sacrifices in the Tretayuga, ritualistic worship and pooja in the Dwarparyuga and chanting the ‘naam’, narrating the stories and singing the praises of God in Kaliyuga, these are the easy ways for attaining Salvation.
3-58.   Such is this Sai’s story, pure and sacred! May the loving, noble listeners listen to it.  And even their five great sins7 will be burned down and destroyed.
3-60.   And so, may these stories be remembered till we die.  May their study be always carried on; so that they bring peace and contentment to the beings burnt in the conflagration of worldly life and its sorrows.
3-61.   Reading the stories, listening to them with faith and devotion, contemplation will come of itself, readily, of Sai, whose form will then appear before the eyes and will be fixed in the heart.
3-62.   May the worship of Sadguru be accomplished in this way, and a detachment from the worldly life come about.  May a fondness grow within, for the remembrance of the guru and the mind be purified.
3-81.   “Moreover, do not repulse or reject anyone contemptuously—be it then, a dog, a pig, or a common fly.  For, without some special bond from the previous birth, no one comes to us.
3-95.   “To such a one then, as me, when all the workings of the mind, all affections are turned, that is the true service and true worship to me.  T experience the bliss of consciousness (i.e.Me), is to be in that pure state which is knowledge.

Recitation of Shri Sai Satcharita and Sai Naam Jaap
1-62.   The Sacred name of the Sadguru is our Veda-Shastra; ‘Sai Samarth’ is our ‘mantra’ or the sacred chant.  It is also our only ‘yantra’ and ‘tantra’.
2-43.   Even a few words of these stories, falling on the ear casually, are enough to make the misfortunes of a creature, recede, at once.  If then, the entire story is heard, with reverence and faith, a simple, trusting devotee will surely and easily cross the ocean of worldly life.
2-84.   “When heard with virtuousness and a good feeling, these stories will generate devotion in the listeners’ minds; self-experience and bliss will then follow most naturally and a state of perpetual joy will thus be attained.

Shirdi Sai said: "Oh Shama, Vishnu sahasranama....”

Our Shirdi Sai Baba, on commentating about the merits of Vishnu sahasranama, said: "Oh Shama, this book is very valuable and efficacious, so I present it to you, you read it. Once I suffered intensely and My heart began to palpitate and My life was in danger. At that critical time, I hugged this book to My heart and then, Shama, what a relief it gave me! I thought that Allah Himself came down and saved Me. So I give this to you, read it slowly, little by little, read daily one name at least and it will do you good."
Sri N. Krishnamachari, scholar, at Steven Knapp's web site, quoting Vaishnavite scholars, states that there are six reasons for the greatness of Vishnu sahasranama:
    "1. Vishnu sahasranama is the essence of the Mahabharata;
    2. Great sages such as Narada, the Alvars, and composers including Saint thyagaraja have made repeated references to the "Thousand Names of Vishnu" in their devotional works; The well-known biographical book of Sri Shirdi Sai Baba - Sri Sai Satcharitra - mentions that Vishnu Sahasranama was highly recommended by Baba.
    3. The person who strung together the thousand names as part of the Mahabharata and preserved it for the world was none other than Sage Veda Vyasa, the foremost knower of the Vedas, who is considered an avatar of Vishnu;
    4. Bhishma considered chanting of the Vishnu sahasranama the best and easiest of all dharmas, or the means to attain relief from all bondage;
    5. It is widely accepted that the chanting of this Stotram gives relief from all sorrows and leads to happiness and peace of mind;
    6. Vishnu sahasranama is in conformity with the teachings of the Gita."

Lord Vishnu is the supreme Lord who has no beginning or end:
He is the supreme lord of all the worlds: He is the controller of the entire universe: by worshipping him, one reaches beyond all grief.
He is friendly to Lord bhrama; He knows all the dharmas; He is enhancer of fame of the people who worship him; He is the lord of the universe; He himself is the form of truth. He is the source of existence of all beings
This Krishna who is here before us is the personification of Dharma; I regard the constant worship of this lotus eyed (Vishnu), with devotion, by means of hymns as the greatest of all dharmas.

He is the supreme and great light; He is the supreme and great ruler; He is the supreme and great Bhraman; He is the supreme and highest goal fit to be attained by all beings

He is the pursuit of the pure; He is the most beneficent of the beneficent; He is the god of gods; He is the imperishable father of beings

  • Importance of Vishnu Sahasranama in Sai-ism

Vedas are the direct revelations of the presence of God.  Shirdi Sai BABA – living and answering god HIMSELF, time and again reinforced the reading of these divine scriptures to HIS devotees by directing people who approached HIM for spiritual answers.  HE asked them to refer to the sacred scriptures like Bhagavat Geeta, Jnaneshwari, Yoga Vasishta, Dasbodh, Vishnu Sahasranama etc, for their answers. BABA emphasized the reading of these scriptures and cited examples from them and created situations to stress on the underlying philosophy of these scriptures.  Sai BABA’s teachings show a significant importance of repeating Hari Naama.  I personally consider every follower of Shirdi Sai BABA should and must read Vishnu Sahasranama.  I beg your forgiveness for this imprudence, but plead with you to consider this statement in the light of MASTER’S emphasis in Sai Satcharita – the sacred book for all Shirdi Sai followers.  In chapter 27 of Sai Satcharita BABA emphatically told Shama to read Vishnu Sahasranama, and said "Oh Shama, this book is very valuable and efficacious, so I present it to you, you read it.

Param Atma, HIMSELF has stressed the importance of this sacred scripture, why should we not follow HIS teachings?  We all remember God during times of distress and claim to be HIS followers and practitioners of Sai Philosophy, but do we really follow what BABA has asked us to do?  Or is this a mere show, put on for the benefit of the company and people around us? For all of us going through a rough time in our life, reading of Vishnu Sahasranama is an answer for all our problems.  Reading this sacred book relieves us from mental, physical and materialistic problems and worries.  When hugging this book to the heart of the DIVINE saved the life of divinity, then what sort of benefits would this reading bestow upon mankind?

BABA in Satcharita gave us the antidote for our problems by asking us to read Vishnu Sahasranama and also showed the way to do it as well - by repeating one name at a time. Reading of Vishnu Sahasranama is like reciting a tongue twister, but constant practice and listening makes us familiar with the words and learning becomes easy.  BABA said reciting even one name a day would suffice to remove our problems and worries.  When such simple solution is present in front of us then why do we go about on a wild goose chase to seek solution for our problems?   Let us all take a resolution and start listening or reading Vishnu Sahasranama, let us practice what our MASTER asked us to do.  When we read the Vishnu Sahasranama with devotion and faith then understanding the underlying philosophy follows automatically, and this will help man to overcome the hurdles of this world to attain god vision.  Let us bow to our MASTER and make a humble start and leave the rest to HIM; HE shall lead us to the pinnacle.
