AT THE FINAL MOMENT: "ANT KAAL"
At the very last moment, one who thinks of wealth, and dies in such thoughts,
will be reincarnated over and over again, in the form of serpents. O sister, do
not forget God's Name. At the very last moment, he who thinks of women,
and dies in such thoughts, will be reincarnated over and over again as a
prostitute. At the very last moment, one who thinks of his children, and
dies in such thoughts, will be reincarnated over and over again as a pig.
At the very last moment, one who thinks of mansions, and dies in such
thoughts, will be reincarnated over and over again as a goblin. At the
very last moment one who thinks of God, and dies in such thoughts, says
Trilochan, that man will be liberated; God will abide in his heart (sggs 526).
As indicated in the Gurbani (Sri Guru Granth Sahib, SGGS) as well as other Indian scriptures, one's thought-condition at the time of death determines his next field of experience. Hence, one's mentality or state of being at the last moment when of quitting his body is important. Depending on a person's mindset at the time of death, either the old mentality (memories, tendencies or Vaasnaas) will supply the energy for a new material body at an appropriate time and place, or it will link back to its Original Source (Cosmic Consciousness, Waheguru).
Jit laago man baasnaa ant saayee pragtaanee: That Vaasnaa or desire, to which the mind is attached, at the last moment, becomes manifest (sggs 242).
Pindi mooai jeeyu kih ghari jaataa. Shabadi ateeti anaahadi raataa: When the body dies, where does the Soul go? It is absorbed into the untouched, unstruck, Transcendental Vibratory Sound of the Shabad (sggs 327).
Whatever we think at the time of death depends on what we practiced throughout our life. In other words, whatever we practice in our entire life will determine our consciousness at the time of death. For example, if one cultivated God-Consciousness throughout his life, he will obviously die in such Pure Consciousness (Gurmukhtaa), resulting in liberation (Mukti) from bondage, here and hereafter. On the contrary, if one has cultivated the mentality of a fruitive worker or sense-enjoyment throughout his life, he will naturally die in material-consciousness (body-consciousness or Manmukhtaa). Such conditioned consciousness results in supplying energy for a new body to work out the consequences of stored thinking and actions.
Jis kai antri raaj abhimaan. So narkaapaatee hovat suaan...: One who has the pride of power within, will dwell in hellish life, and become a dog. One who deems himself to have the beauty of youth, will become a maggot in manure. One who claims to act virtuously, will live and die, wandering through countless reincarnations. One who takes pride in wealth and lands is a fool, blind and ignorant. (sggs 278).
Ant kaal jo lashamee simarai....: At the very last moment, one who thinks of wealth, and dies in such thoughts, will be reincarnated over and over again, in the form of serpents....(sggs 526).
Karma dharma paakhand jo deesahi tin jamu jaagaatee lootai. Nirabaan keeratan gaavahu karate kaa nimakh simarat jitu shoottai: The rituals, religious rites, and hypocrisies which are seen, are plundered by the death, the ultimate tax collector. Sing the Creator's pure praises; contemplating whom, even for an instant, one is saved (sggs 747).
Even though a pure one (Gurmukh) and a wicked person (Manmhkh) both die, but there is the difference in the death of both entities — a pure devotee dies in Unconditioned Consciousness and link back to the Source. On the contrary, a wicked person dies in material consciousness and falls down again into the evolutionary cycle of repeated suffering. Accordingly, just as the air carries fragrance of a flower or an incense, so a person's mentality at the time of death will carry his bundle of memories to next dwelling. The Gurbani says:
Jit laago man baasnaa ant saayee pragtaanee: That Vaasnaa or desire, to which the mind is attached, at the last moment, becomes manifest (sggs 242).
That thought with which a dying man leaves the body determines --through his long persistence in it--his next state of being (Gita 8.6).
Jaise harahatt kee maalaa tind lagat hai ik sakhanee hor fer bhareeat hai. Taiso hee ihu khel khasam kaa jiou ous kee vadiaaee. Suratee kai maarag chal kai oulatee nadari pragaasee: The buckets on the chain of the persian wheel rotate; one empties out to fill another. So is the Divine Play; such is His Glorious Greatness. Following the path of intuitive awareness, one turns away from the world, and one's vision is enlightened (sggs 1329).
